W

e spoke with Vanessa Abuchaibe Delaney, meteorologist for Estrella TV and Mother of a beautiful little girl, about balancing work and family, spring traditions and how she’s handling today’s current matters. Maybe the most difficult yet rewarding job there is, Motherhood is much more than a title. It’s a lifestyle, it’s a contribution and it’s an overarching theme for life. Mothers nurture, support and encourage their children, and the community, to be compassionate, loving and successful members of society. This Mother’s Day, as we celebrate and honor all of the Mothers out there, we had the opportunity to speak with Super Mom, Vanessa Abuchaibe Delaney. She opens up to us about family, spring traditions and the challenges she has faced in today’s changed world. Vanessa also shares some advice for all of the Moms out there trying to balance it all. As a career-driven, hard-working woman balancing career and family, what would you say is your “why?” The driving force for all that you do? What keeps you going? My family. My parents, sister, husband and daughter are the pillars of my life. They are an amazing support system and therefore, the ones that motivate me every single day. They are the dream team any working Mommy can wish for! I am so grateful for them.

Your favorite quote by Maya Angelou is, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” In what ways do you incorporate this into your work environment, or raising your daughter?

Do you have any Spring tradition(s) that your family participates in each year? Spring cleaning… and that includes clothing donations! We try to give away any clothes that we haven’t worn in the past year or so to my cousins in Colombia or people in need here in our community. Donating clothing, buying less (but with better quality, longlasting materials) or buying gently used items are also amazing contributions to our planet. It’s difficult with the everchanging fashion trends but possible to do your part even if it’s just on a small scale. In today’s changed society, what would you say has been the biggest adjustment for you in your career? In your family? Society has quickly changed in the past year and we have faced many challenges. One of the challenges I have faced is broadcasting my weather segments from home while having a toddler running around the house screaming, “Mami, Mami, Mamiiiiiiiii!” I am sure many parents went through a similar situation. I was extremely fortunate to have my parents’ help during our quarantine. My Mom would take care of Lily and cook us dinner while my husband and I worked from home. She is truly a Saint for all she does for us.

What would your best advice be to mothers who are balancing work and children?

My father is the epitome of this quote. His patience, kindness and humbleness towards others is truly remarkable. He has passed that on to me as much as he could. It also circles back to our faith in God. Whether you are the CEO of the biggest company in the world or the cleaning lady, you will always receive the same respect. Since we come from Middle Eastern and Colombian ancestry, I feel we have a deeper understanding of different cultures and therefore, tend to be very accepting of others just the way they are. I always say we are on this Earth just for a “little while,” so be kind. k

When you are a Mom, timemanagement is on another level, but it is possible to at least strive for balance. Since I love being a meteorologist, it’s easy for me to continue “working” after work, but I try to put my phone down as soon as I walk in the door in order to commit my full attention to my family. I try to workout before Lily wakes up or I involve her in my workouts by asking her to go on a stroller ride while I jog. I go on a brunch outing with my girlfriends once in a while to make sure to get that “adult, Mommy-life” talk-time; it feels amazing to connect in that way. My husband and I also schedule a date, just the two of us, even if it means a day-date to spend some quality time with each other. Sometimes all of this happens, and sometimes it doesn’t. Be ok with both but always strive for

ontinued media exposure to stressful events can have a significant impact on a child’s psychological well-being. With the COVID-19 pandemic dominating news cycles, psychologist Jonathan Comer offers tips on how to manage media exposure during this stressful time. Keep a daily schedule. Stability and structure are reassuring to children. Maintain your child’s typical waking times, mealtimes, and bedtimes throughout school closures and quarantines. Find out what they know. As much as possible, stick to answering questions rather than volunteering too much information. When clarifying details, explain the current events in a factual manner, without giving unnecessarily disturbing or graphic details. Watch smart and avoid overexposure. Stick to credible information outlets and limit excessive news consumption. Watching the news “around the clock” does not typically provide any more or better information than you get from briefly checking in with the news a couple of times per day. Monitor social media. For some, social media is a way to stay connected. Unfortunately, it often spreads misinformation and focuses on the emotional aspects of stressful situations. Setting limitsto the use of digital devices can help. Be confident. Research shows that during stressful times children feel more secure when their parents act calm in front of them. Pay attention to your

health care for children and adolescents. Families can obtain additional information and resources on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website www.cdc.org. Feelings are normal. Let children know that it is normal to feel upset, scared or angry. You want children to accept their feelings. Praise positive thoughts. When your child offers positive or hopeful thoughts, be sure to praise him or her. Tell children how proud you are of them and encourage them to keep thinking along those lines. Encourage them to take action. Have children write thank you letters to medical professionals or elected officials who are working to keep the community safe. Children can also make cards to show their appreciation to local heroes who are finding unique ways to help others. Comer has conducted extensive research on the psychological impact of traumatic events on youth. As director of the Mental Health Interventions and Technology Program at FIU’s Center for Children and Families, he conducts research on expanding the quality, scope and accessibility of mental

How to Advocate for Climate Change Source: Science Moms

Empower yourself to help save the planet If you’re not sure where to begin, these ideas from the climate scientists at Science Moms can add up to create meaningful solutions. Learn about climate change. Education is a powerful tool, so learning all you can about climate change is one of the best ways to get involved.

C

limate change is an issue that impacts everyone, especially children. The impacts can be seen first-hand, as the planet warms, and human fingerprints are all over the consequences: bigger, stronger hurricanes; deadly heat waves; more intense downpours; and devastating wildfires. In fact, 60% of Americans are concerned about climate change, according to a survey by the Potential Energy Coalition. For many moms, having a child is what made them start to care about climate change in the first place. Eighty-three percent of

moms are concerned about climate change and want to do something about it. “It’s hard to study climate change and aspects of climate change and be a mother because the data’s very real to you,” said Dr. Emily Fischer, atmospheric chemist and associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University. “We need a massive shift in the way we produce energy within 10 years, the same time period I need to save and plan to send my daughter to college. We’re hoping moms will realize climate change impacts their children and that we have solutions, but we need to act relatively quickly.”

Raise your voice. Leaders have the ability to truly take action on the scale needed to make lasting progress on this challenge, but they need to know that it’s a top priority of individuals. You can add your name to petitions and invite others to do the same, attend local meetings to voice your support for reducing carbon pollution and clean energy projects and meet with elected leaders to ensure they know you stand behind them. Of all the actions you can take, one of the most powerful is telling your representatives this is an issue you care about. “By investing in a clean energy future and common-sense solutions that keep families and communities safe, government leaders have the ability to enact policies that escalate on a scale we could never achieve alone,” Hayhoe said. “They all need to know we stand behind their decisions to tackle this issue.” Talk about it. In order to avoid some of the worst impacts of climate change, fast action is needed. Share what you learn with your neighbors and other parents to help make everyone more aware of the issue. Also remember that environmental concerns aren’t just for adults. Oftentimes, concern for the climate comes from children. Talking

Match the pairs: find the exact mirror copy for every row. with your kids about the importance of good stewardship and empowering them to make a difference can affect how the next generation approaches concerns like climate change and pollution. Make climate-conscious choices. There are nearly countless examples of smaller actions you can take to adapt your own home and life. Options to consider include switching to electric cars, buying green electricity (now available in 24 states), putting solar panels on your roof, insulating your house or adding more plantbased foods to your diet. Talking and Listening to Your Kids About Climate Change Climate change can be a scary subject no matter how old your kids are, and there are some big concepts that are hard to understand. For others, they know that their future is at risk and are taking matters into their own hands by becoming activists on social media and marching in youth climate strikes.

When talking with older kids, try to avoid scientific jargon and complicated explanations. Answer questions to the best of your ability and work together to find answers to the things you don’t know. Correct misinformation they may be hearing from others and be sure to include facts along with your own perspective as you discuss climate change. It’s common for kids of all ages to be anxious about the impact of climate change. You can help channel that energy into productive action by getting involved in local organizations that are focused on improving the environment. k

• 2 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoons flour • 1 1/2 cups milk • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese • 2 sheets puff pastry • 18 eggs • 2 cups diced ham • chopped fresh green onions Heat oven 375 F. In small saucepan, melt butter. Whisk flour with butter. Gradually pour in milk, whisking each time. Bring to simmer, whisking until mixture starts to thicken. Remove from heat; stir in Swiss cheese. Set aside.

Use rolling pin to thin out puff pastries. Cut each into nine squares. Line pastry squares in muffin cups, pressing bottoms down firmly and moving pastries up sides for edges to come up just over muffin tins. Fill each cup with 1 teaspoon cheese sauce. Crack one egg into each cup and sprinkle each with diced ham. Bake 10-15 minutes until eggs set. Sprinkle with chopped green onions. k

Autism Speaks & The Ad Council Highlight Need for Early Screening and Diagnosis as Part of World Autism Month

A

Latest Campaign Continues to Educate Parents on Signs of Autism, Especially Among Minority & Lower Income Communities.

ccording to the CDC, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the U.S., and though autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 18 months, the signs can begin to appear even sooner. Despite this, the average age of diagnosis is 4 years and 3 months, and even later in minority and lowincome communities. This later diagnosis results in missing out on access to critical, life-enhancing resources and supports. As COVID-19 prevented many families from regular well-visits to assess progress toward developmental milestones, experts believe that even more children have gone undiagnosed in recent months.

The earlier a child is diagnosed, the more support can be provided for their healthy development. The Ad Council and Autism Speaks recently launched an all-new bilingual awareness campaign encouraging parents and caregivers of young children to spot the signs early and seek support when they need it. The new video PSAs feature real children with autism and their families, and aim to destigmatize autism screenings and

lower the age of diagnosis by showing families the positive outcomes that are possible following a diagnosis. Research shows that early intervention can improve learning, communication and social skills among young children with autism. The campaign urges parents to understand how learning the signs of autism, many of which are identifiable early in a child's life, can afford the best opportunities to deliver benefits across the entire life span. k

Now More Than Ever, Your Child Deserves a Head Start! Head Start and Early Head Start program accepting applications

amilies living in Miami-Dade County with children between the ages of birth to 5 years old, in need of childcare services, should apply and take advantage of this free, high-quality educational program that offers a variety of services for children and families. Head Start and Early Head Start provides no cost full-day childcare and family services to eligible applicants. Early Head Start serves children birth to 3 years old, as well as expectant mothers and Head

Startserves children who are 3 to 4 years old by September 1, or no older than 5 years old after September 1. Head Start and Early Head Start centers are open and providing in-person and virtual services to meet the needs of individual families. The services are provided at no cost to families

who qualify, and the applications are accepted at any time of the year. Children do not need to be potty trained for either program. Parents can apply online, in English and Spanish, or download and submit an application in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, at your local Head Start center. k
