hen we had to start crisis-schooling due to COVID-19, it quickly became clear that organization can be the difference between success and chaos. What lessons can we apply to the start of a new school year? Whether it’s establishing a great work-space or managing all the papers, setting up a few systems for good back-to-school home organization will pay off in preserved sanity—your sanity, Mom. And can you put too high a price on that? We didn’t think so.

8

kiddos | August • September 2022

Preparing for a new school year can be an overwhelming task, almost as overwhelming as staying organized throughout the school year. Dive in with these 8 ways to get your home backto-school ready, no matter what kind of schooling you’re doing! Create a filing system. Files aren’t just for offices – they’re also a great way to keep your home organized! Set aside a drawer to hold your files and buy some folders with cute patterns (it’s always

getting too cluttered throughout the year. Then take stock of what your child does have; this will give you an idea of what clothes you need to buy. A good rule you might want to implement is that any time you buy them a new article of clothing, they have to get rid of one in their closet.

easier to keep things organized if they look nice!). You can set aside one folder for each child in which to keep their school papers and medical forms, or you can organize the folders by month, or by category. If you keep the folders updated throughout the year, you’ll cut back on the time and stress spent looking for lost papers. Update all medical information. Fill out any necessary medical forms and catch your kids up on all their immunizations. If your child has any allergies that may cause a problem while they’re at school, contact their teacher to discuss necessary precautions. Clean out the closets. Before you go out and buy a whole new backto-school wardrobe, go through your child’s closet with them and have them try on clothes they haven’t worn in a while. Take their outgrown clothes to a resale shop or donate them to a homeless shelter. This will make room for any new clothes and keep their closet from

Buy school supplies. You can get a list of needed school supplies from the school office or your child’s teacher. If they don’t provide one, make one yourself. Try to stick to the basics (backpack, pencils/pens, notebooks, etc.) until school starts, so you don’t end up with unneeded supplies. You can always go grab more later if needed. Start your kids on a bedtime routine, that way when school starts they’ll be used to going to bed and waking up at the same time. If your kids have been staying up late and sleeping in late during the summer, you should gradually move up their bedtimes and wake-up times by about ten to twenty minutes each day starting a couple weeks before the end of summer. This will make bedtime easier on everyone once school starts. And once you’ve established a schedule, stick to it. Plan out what to pack for lunch. Stock up on lunchbox basics ahead of time when you see them on sale. Make it fun by letting your kids be a part of the planning process; take them to the grocery store with you and let them pick out something special. Also, ahead of time, you can make notes to put in your

child’s lunch box for the first week of school to let them know you’re thinking about them. When you have time you should also do this randomly throughout the school year! Update your calendar. Manage your and your kids’ schedules more efficiently by adding school-related items to your calendar, like holidays and school events. Don’t forget to fill in extra-curricular activities too, like soccer games, music classes, or karate. Keep your organizer with you and make changes whenever something comes up. If you know what to expect, you’ll be much more capable of handling a busy schedule! Set up a homework schedule. Get a special “homework” notebook for each child, and every day when they come home from school, have them write down their homework assignments for that day. Keep the notebooks laid out where everyone can see them, and when they finish each assignment have them cross it off the list. Make a rule that they can only watch TV or have free time when all the assignments are marked off! This is a good way for your kids to have visual proof of their progress, and for you to keep track of what they’re doing. k

a paper planner? Using the calendar on their phone or computer? Until they figure it out, check in with them each night and have them show you what’s on their study to-do list.

4

How to prep school supplies. Teach them to get their school clothes ready the night before, along with any clothes they’ll need for PE or after-school activities. Same goes for backpacks — they should be packed before bed and your kids should be the ones double checking to be sure they are.

ell, I finally got my son his own alarm clock. He doesn’t have a phone so, up until now, I’ve had the pleasure of waking him every morning. And when I say pleasure, I mean it. I loved giving him a cheerful greeting and a little nudge to start his day. But that wasn’t really the best thing for him. He needed to learn that I wasn’t always going to be available to be his alarm. The boy needed me to let him learn some responsibility. The school year provides many lessons for kids to learn in addition to their actual schoolwork. One of the best ways for kids to learn responsibility and how to take care of themselves is to let them do it and suffer the consequences if they fail. Here are five ways to get started in the form of five back to school lessons your kids need to learn this year.

1

How to wake up on their own. If you’re not ready to give up the morning snuggles with your kids, that’s okay, you can still let them wake up on their own. Once you hear their alarm go off, go in to say hello. And you might

10

kiddos | August • September 2022

not want to make their phone their alarm clock; that’s way too much temptation at their fingertips to stay up late connecting with their friends or playing video games. Note: If you want to get your child excited about getting up early for school, encourage their dad to take them to a special activity.

How to talk to their teachers. Ultimately, you want to work yourself out of being the middle ‘mom’ between your children and their teachers. If your son needs to find out what work he missed while he was out sick, have him email his teacher. If your daughter has a question about running for class office or if she wonders what her grade is in math, have her talk to her teacher. What are your ideas for how to teach our kids to be responsible, especially when it comes to school matters? k

2

How to pack their own lunch or snacks. This might be tougher on you at first, but once your kids get into a routine you’ll love it. Come up with a few basic lunches your kids can prepare and try to get most of them ready the night before.

3

How to keep track of homework and tests. You may have to do a little handholding here before you back away completely. Ask your kids what system will work best for them—having

5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Be Your Kid’s Friend (Yet) Source: Family First

I

admit it. I’ve slipped up and called my daughter by my sister’s name once or twice. My daughter may only be 12, but we’re almost the same height and some of my clothes fit her. My sister doesn’t even live in the same state, but I’m reminded of her because of the amount of time I spend with my daughter before and after school and all weekend long. When it’s just us two girls in the house, it almost feels like a sisterly friendship. But should it? My daughter is a lot of fun to be around, but she’s not my equal. Even though there are times we feel like friends— when she confides in me or while we’re laughing at a funny movie together—it’s important to keep the parent-child relationship clear. I have to remind myself of these 5 reasons it’s important to protect those boundaries and be a parent, not a friend, at least for now.

16

kiddos | August • September 2022

Having fun with our kids and giving them love is essential, but keeping the boundaries clear is just as important.

1

To Give Her Security When my friend’s daughter hit a parked car in the school lot recently, she came to her mom for help. The teen knew her mom would take care of her. But if you’ve been acting like friends, you might start to expect her to take care of you too and this wouldn’t be good for her. It’s the mom who gives her child the security she needs to feel safe in the world as she grows up, to make mistakes, and to learn from them. We’re always going to be there for our kids, so let’s make sure they know it by not blurring the boundaries. According to Barbara Harvey, a parenting expert in Atlanta, “Children want and need boundaries. … They depend on parents to set the parameters and keep them safe.” Our kids will gain more freedom as they grow, but even when they reach the teen years, we

have to remind ourselves they’re still developing and learning.

2

To Ease His Stress From mortgages to aging parents, we all have stressors. But we shouldn’t talk about these with our kids. As tempting as it may be to vent—“I don’t know how we’re going to pay all our bills this month!”—doing so will create more problems for the child. Without boundaries and a sense of security, kids will feel stressed. We certainly don’t want our kids to be anxious, but when we cross the parentfriend line and treat our children like confidants, we’re not only giving them our stress, but also the stress of how to handle their parent’s problem. It’s too much for a young person who is not emotionally ready for problems coming from the adult world.

kiddos

fun

Find the top view for each of the figures 1,4,5,8,9. 3

To Remove Any Pressure If you unload on your kids about a problem at work (“I’m being pressured to socialize more with the staff in the evenings.”), they’re put in an awkward position. Suddenly, a child is asked to provide comfort and guidance to a parent when it’s usually the role of the parent to comfort and guide the child. When a child is a mom’s best friend, there’s too much pressure to know about and be involved in adult situations. “Children are not mentally or emotionally ready for this role,” Harvey said. Take the pressure off kids by keeping the parent-child line clear while they’re still living under your roof.

4

To Prevent Her From Growing Up Too Quickly Without a sense of security coming from her mom and with the added stress and pressure of being her mom’s confidante, a child will be forced to grow up too fast. She won’t be actively involved in normal activities with her peers and instead will be forced to handle situations beyond her years. I want to be able to take my daughter shopping and to other fun activities, but I’m going to be careful to be a parent, not a friend to her—even if she looks and acts maturely.

5

When my daughter puts up a little too much stink about shutting off her light at night and putting her book away, I have to ask myself if I’ve been too chummy and if I’ve made it harder for her to follow the rules. Having fun with our kids and giving them love is essential, but keeping the boundaries clear is just as important. k

To Teach What’s Best for Him—Even if He Doesn’t Like It Just like a friend, we listen to our children and are supportive and fun. But if we want them to listen to us when we tell them they need to wear a jacket or that vaping is bad for them, they need to know it’s coming from your authority as their parent.

Kid-Friendly Recipe to Power Through School Days

A

menu of filling, delicious recipes is just what your family needs to make each school day a successful educational adventure. Satisfying lunch and dinner ideas can give loved ones the fuel they need while delicious desserts provide motivation for growing minds to get homework finished before enjoying a treat. When weeks get hectic due to busy schedules, these recipes offer simple solutions to make cooking easier while limiting time spent in the kitchen. Start with a lunch that’s as easy to make as it

is to pack in a lunchbox, recharge in the evening thanks to a veggie-forward main course and satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth with a chocolatey favorite to round out the day.

• 1 cup shredded cheese dill pickle

Make School Lunches a Breeze There’s a lot to remember when sending your student off to school each morning, from backpacks and school supplies to last night’s homework. Don’t forget one of the key ingredients to a successful day: lunch.

In large skillet, cook ground beef and onion until beef is thoroughly cooked and onions are tender. Drain. Stir in ketchup and mustard.

These Cheeseburger Turnovers provide the energy little learners need to power through their afternoon lessons. One winning idea to make the week easier is to prep a full batch of these easily packable, kid-friendly handhelds Sunday night so you’ve got lunch ready for each day. Cheeseburger Turnovers • 1 pound ground beef • 1/2 cup onion, chopped • 2 tablespoons ketchup • 1 tablespoon mustard • 1 can flaky biscuits

slices, halved

• 1 egg, beaten Heat oven to 375 F.

Separate biscuit dough. On ungreased baking sheet, flatten biscuit dough to form 6-inch rounds. Spoon beef mixture onto one side of flattened dough. Sprinkle with cheese. Top with dill pickle half. Fold dough over filling. With fork tines, press dough edges to seal. Cut two slits in top of dough to release steam. Repeat with remaining dough, beef mixture, cheese and pickles. Brush each turnover with egg wash. Bake 18-22 minutes, or until deep golden brown. k
