SIMPLE NAME, BIG CHOICE

Amazone ZA mounted twin-disc fertiliser spreaders have been around for decades, with the ubiquitous ZA-M spearheading the company’s 24m plus spread width range from 1990, the subsequent 36m ZA-M (still available new) and 48m ZA-M Ultra models proving widely available on the pre-owned market at affordable prices. It is, however, the newer and less common ZA-TS models, that started to sell from 2013, that we consider here.

Although Amazone trialled its fi rst ZA-TS spreader in the UK back in 2011, with a further fi ve test machines coming over in 2012, it was not until 2013 that these models, with their advanced spreading system, started to sell in any numbers. A couple of years later the 36m ZA-V models were launched. These have a higher capacity than the existing ZA-M, and will be a rare used fi nd.

It is worth understanding the similarities between these later models as, at first glance, a ZA-V spreader can ‘look’ to be pretty similar to an equivalent capacity ZA-TS. Both model ranges share the same hopper design with capacities of up to 4,200 litres and can be fitted with either a ‘Super’ Cat II only or ‘Ultra’ Cat II/III headstock. There is also the same choice of ‘Tronic’ pto or ‘Hydro’ hydraulic disc drive. (The Hydro spec was standard on the ZA-TS initially.)

Note: Although it is not covered here, the ZG-TS spreader is essentially the trailed alternative to the mounted ZA-TS and shares the same respective spreading systems. So much of what applies to the mounted machine will be applicable to trailed equivalent. These models have hopper capacities of up to 8,200 litres.

HOW DO THE ZA-V AND ZA-TS DIFFER?

The core and important differences between ZA-V and ZA-TS spreaders will include:

• Spread width. ZA-V spreaders have a maximum spread width of up to 36.0m. ZA-TS models can spread up to 54.0m

• Output. ZA-V models have a maximum output of up to 390kg/min. ZA-TS models can spread up to 650kg/min

• Border spreading. ZA-V models have a choice of hydraulic Limiter V or electronic V+ border spreading. ZA-TS units have the more advanced ClickTS manual and automated AutoTS system (see text)

• Agitators. ZA-V models have agitators that slow as soon as the outlet to the disc closes. ZA-TS agitators have electric drive that shuts off completely when the outlets close

• WindControl. ZA-TS spreaders can be fitted with ArgusTwin automated radar based lateral spread control and a wind sensor as an option

Although the above is a broad brushed outline, it is clear that ZA-V and ZA-TS spreaders are of a different output class and will appeal to different end users. Where the

ZA-V is able to apply up to 350kg/ha to 36m at a travel speed of up to 12km/hr, the ZA-TS can spread up to 10.8kg/second, enabling these units to apply up 600kg/ha of fertiliser across 36m at travel speeds of 30 km/hr. It is clear that those seeking a higher output spreader should consider the ZA-TS over the ZA-V.

BORDER SPREADING

It is easy enough to outline how the Amazone TS system operates. To limit spreading width to one side, the TS system advances the disc delivery vanes to divert material to adjacent short spreading vanes. The latter have a reduced throw and limit material spread to one side of the machine.

Simple in theory but actually a bit more involved as the system does not ‘dump’ excess fertiliser in a reduced band width, but also reduces the application to compensate for the decreased spread. On the first ZA-TS models, AutoTS was standard on both discs and operated from the cab via the spreader control box. As both discs needed a costly electronic actuator to move the spreading vanes, a ‘manual’ ClickTS system was fitted to one of the discs from 2015 to reduce the ZA-TS sticker price.

When checking the spreaders specifications, it is easy to overlook important details to include the type of headstock fitted. Pictured Super design has Cat II pins and will not fit a larger Cat III linkage. Note the Tronic pto drive. This would have saved the original buyer around £2,900 against a new ZA-TS Profis Hydro but the close coupling of these spreaders can make fitting the drive a fiddle and you lose the ability to run the spreader at low engine revs.

<< ClickTS does the same job as AutoTS but requires the operator to push over a lever on the disc to engage and then move it back when the headlands have been spread. An increasing number of TS spreaders will be specified with AutoTS on the most common headland spreading disc, with ClickTS on the other. Check which is which and that it suits your needs.

Ultra Cat II/III headstock enables the spreader to work with a large, powerful tractor, Hydro hydraulic requires a modest 70litre/min flow that be delivered at low, less fuel hungry, engine speeds. Pictured unit shows new for 2019 alloy hose tidy, this providing much easier stowage than existing system. Not pictured is another detail change for this year; the hopper access ladder is now secured by a push-pin rather than stiff latch.

‘DUMB’ NORMAL OR INTELLIGENT SPREADING

It is here where outlining what a ZA-TS spreader can do becomes a bit misleading. These models have the ability to apply fertiliser at variable rates, automatically adjust lateral spread rates to cater for overlapping, compensate for terrain and cross winds and adjust to suit varied batches

of fertiliser. For various feature sets to work calls for the right options, controllers, software and GPS integration. The level of automation in other words will relate to the spreaders spec and systems plugged and hooked up to the ISOBUS controller.

The mechanism is well-contained so it not liable to damage but the hood fabric can get torn so check. The system seals well but can be made to partially close to allow the hopper to ventilate to speed drying after washing.

Peer into the hopper and see if low hopper level sensors are fitted. They are mounted under the mesh screen. Retrofit kits are offered.

Take time to inspect the discs and related electrically powered actuators; the inner unit adjusts and closes the hopper outlet aperture, the outer altering the drop point to vary the spread pattern. vary the spreading disc speeds. If you want to exploit features, such as DynamicSpread, you will need to select a ZA-TS Hydro. It is here worth pointing out ZA-TS spreaders can be used in a more traditional way, with no automated spreading control. A pto driven Tronic model could be a great choice for an existing ZA-M / ZA-M Ultra user looking for a ‘similar’ machine but with considerably enhanced output. If the spreader is to be used by a large, powerful tractor, however, the hydraulic Hydro models are perhaps a better choice. The drive requires a modest 70 litre/min flow that can be delivered with fewer engine revs than required for ECO pto speeds. This could help save a decent amount of fuel.

CONTROLLERS

ISOBUS enables core ZA-TS functions to be controlled via a suitably equipped tractor in-cab terminal. The spreader can also be operated using one of three key Amazone control boxes, the most common type being the 5.6inch Amatron 3. Other Amazone options can include the latest Amazone 8.4inch touchscreen, AmaTron4, or advanced

There are three types of spreader vane offered, TS 1 for up to 24m, TS 2 for up to 36m and TS 3 for up to 54m. You are unlikely to spot a ZA-TS with the TS 1 vanes, TS 2 proving most popular. Vane wear is easy to pick up, a stippled surface and any clear tip wear suggesting a new set will needed; these will cost £274.29 and £348.84 ex-VAT for TS 2 and TS 3 types respectively.

range topping 12.1inch AMAPAD. These controls are ISOBUS ‘plug and play’ so they can also control a wide range of other makes and models of attachments.

If you intend hooking up a ZA-TS to your tractor’ ISOBUS system you may not have access to certain spreader functions, such as DynamicSpread section control. Section control is an involved topic, but in simple outline the system can be used to help spread fertiliser more evenly when dealing with overlaps and ‘wedge shaped’ fields.

As standard, section control can be manually activated to apply fertiliser in eight or 16 sections on Tronic pto spreaders, this

increasing to potentially 32, 64 or 128 part sections on Hydro spreaders. To get the highest section numbers, the spreader will need the right controller, software and, for DynamicSpread, GPS integration. Amazone control box software has seen a number of upgrades that are ‘free’ to users but need to be installed by a dealer. This can take an hour and should be costed accordingly.

If a controller is supplied with a used buy, it is most likely to be the entry level Amatron 3. The software version appears on the start-up screen. The later the version, the more features it can potentially offer,

such as increased section control. The caveat is that the screen is a mini computer, the older the unit the less processing power it will have and with it the ability to ‘tell’ the spreader what to do. Similarly, GPS systems integrated into the system will need setting up and unlock codes tapping in plus subscription to the relevant software. Factor this in when looking at a used buy.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR – THE OBVIOUS

Modern spreaders tend to be better able to stave off the corrosive nature of fertilisers in part thanks to the wider use of stainless steel and durable plastics plus reduced weld seams in vulnerable areas. This is not the same as suggesting a used ZA-TS is never going to rust but you should expect a pre-owned model to be in good physical shape. Still look for rust, damage and corrosion, a key indicator of a unit that has either not been looked after or, more likely, a clue that the spreader has done a lot of work. Although ZA-TS spreaders will be relatively thin on the pre-owned market do not let scarcity lead you into buying a unit that is not in tip-top physical shape (see pictures and captions). You will also need to hook the spreader up to a tractor and controller to check the actuators work correctly.

Entry level Amatron 3 controller is backwards compatible with non-ISOBUS Amatron+ software as well as working to current ISOBUS protocols. Able to work as a tractor ECU, the unit will deliver TaskController job management and can be GPSSwitch automated for part-width section control. GPS-Track parallel guidance is also available.

Amatron 3 being a more likely find with a used ZA-TS. The amount of spreading sophistication on offer will depend upon the controller and related GPS hardware linked to the spreader. The basic spreader hardware is capable of 128 part-width section control on Hydro models mated to the right controller and software packages.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR –THE LESS OBVIOUS

Designed as a premium spreader, the first batch of ZA-TS models brought into the UK would have had a high standard specification to include AutoTS on both discs and Hydro hydraulic drive. As time progressed, Amazone offered lower specs choices to include Tronic pto drive and ClickTS border control. As previously mentioned, if you just want a high output spreader and are not too bothered with some of the more advanced features available, look for a base ZA-TS Tronic.

Two types of headstock are available; Super Cat II and Ultra Cat II/III. The latter is a common fit on larger 4200 Hydro models but make no assumptions. The hopper ‘base’ is shared across all versions, with different top sections determining overall capacity. The largest hopper available is 4,200 litres.

ARGUSTWIN

Among numerous options, one many only really appreciate after seeing the actual benefit is ArgusTwin. As with other features, the system needs to be compatible with the controller running the spreader (Machine ECU controllers need to run software

version 1.16 or above). ArgusTwin employs 14 radar sensors to monitor the lateral spread pattern and can help boost accuracy when changing between batches of fertiliser, working across slopes, setting off and stopping or even cater for wear in the spreading vanes.

Users suggest ArgusTwin is an option that is well worth having. The good news is that it can be retrofitted to an existing spreader from 2016 onwards. Less welcome will be the cost. As the system is a popular new spec choice, it is probably better to seek out a spreader with it already fitted.

SUMMARY

Although the ‘metal’ bits of a ZA-TS spreader may well resemble older twin-disc Amazone spreaders, there is a great deal of development within the TS that enables these machines to have far greater output and considerably enhanced spreading accuracy. The trick is to match your output needs with the level of sophistication you require. If the latter is a priority, buying the spreader will be just part of the package. You will need to invest time and money in machine controller or tractor ISOBUS system and GPS packages to benefit from

everything these machines can offer.

These units are now starting to come onto the pre-owned market, with entry level prices of perhaps £13,000, models with Hydro drive, a 4,200 litre hopper and Ultra headstock starting at around £15,000 plus. ArgusTwin will add around £4,000. Details such as hydraulic hopper covers and low level hopper sensors are well worth having, each adding to the used price.

When it comes to controllers, a good number of machines will be offered without a control box but hooking up to a tractor ISOBUS terminal will provide decent ‘basic’ interaction between spreader and tractor. If you need more sophistication, seek advice.

As with so many items of modern agricultural equipment, buying a new machine of the exact spec you want may prove more cost effective than trying to upgrade a used buy, so do some homework and talk your needs through with a dealer spreader specialist. When a hopper load of fertiliser weighs in at a hefty sum, the benefits of applying it accurately will not take long to re-coup.

With all this good weather about the ploughing season has started with bumper crowds. The sale season continues unabated but you have to have the right thing even though record prices have been seen in the classic sector during August.

Cheffi ns delivered its most successful Harrogate Vintage Sale to date on Sunday 19 August at the Great Yorkshire Showground. The auction saw over £800,000 worth of vintage tractors, agricultural machinery and collectors’ items sold, making this the highest grossing sale in Cheffi ns’ 25-year history of hosting an annual 1,000 lot collective auction at this site.

The 160-lot strong tractor section saw an excellent variety of makes and models, with £53,000 paid for a 1985 Mercedes MB Trac 1500, followed by another Mercedes MB Trac from 1980, which achieved £36,500, when both were sold to UK-based collectors. Similarly, a 1972 Massey Ferguson 20 Multi-Power industrial tractor achieved £31,500 against an estimate of £9,000 - £11,000, when it sold to a well-known

From the same collection came a 1968 Massey Ferguson 178 which sold for £23,000. In addition, a large collection of Fordson tractors, consigned from North Wales were well received, with an original 1959 Fordson Power Major selling for a controversial, but record breaking £17,500. The later classics also saw strong prices, proving popular with UK and European collectors, with a 1986 John Deere 4850 selling for £27,000, a 1985 International 1255XL selling for £26,000 and a 1991 Ford 8830 selling for £21,000.

On Monday 4 September Cheffi ns traditional monthly tractor sales took place and as always there was plenty to go for. The sale started with a 1977 Massey Ferguson 575 CVL437T which sold for £6,000 it was followed by a 1965 Massey Ferguson 165 EVJ631C at £4,600 both needing some work but running.

Later on the 2002 Massey Ferguson 8220 AF02 JWN with 40k box and three spools changed hands at £15,000. Prices went up with the 2014 Massey Ferguson 5612 with Q46 loader AE14 DTS with 5560 hours at £32,500. A clean MF 6475 Dyna 6 with 966 loader was yours at £21,000. Some cheaper Massey Fergusons came and went with the 2005 6475 Dynashift four-wheel drive WA05EOK selling for £11,000 and the smaller 2009 4245 R59WEC at £11,200. The one they wanted was the Massey Ferguson 6290 four-wheel drive Dynashift at £40,000.

It was followed on by the 1994 New Holland 5640SL two-wheel drive at £10,000. The 1994 New Holland 7740 four-wheel drive looked rather worn and was sold £7,500 sold. Moving on in time was the T6020 with 956 loader selling at £20,000 doing a little better was the 2013 T7.250 at £26,000.

The 2017 Carraro V70 Agricbe GN17 LUD vineyard looked good in its silver livery it got to £15,000 but was not enough to see it sold and it was the same with the Valpadana 6560 ATM MK56DFP with roll bar and no cab got to £6,000.

Deutz-Fahr are not always the easiest of sellers, but Cheffins got some away here, the 2009 M620 sold for £17,600 in clean condition and the similar 2014 6160.4 at £24,000. The

‘baby’ 4.31 with Quickie loader was got away also at £7,500. Earlier the neat Landini 6880 four-wheel drive changed hands at £8,200 looking very old fashioned for its year.

Interspersed were a number of JCBs with the 1994 155-65 Fastrac M655ANO with 6380 hours selling for £15,000 and the similar year example L246LWM raised £10,500. A 1995 Case-IH 4230 four-wheel drive in reasonable order went on to find a new home at £8,800.

As for John Deere well some classics came up first like the stunning 1988 2850 two-wheel drive F775YEN with 7495 hours at a good £10,000 and the 2040 with loader £3,300 needing some work. A 2030 two-wheel drive with Duncan cab was yours for £2,500. The 2012 Gator 850D AU62DTZ raised £6,200 and then the big stuff so to speak hit the scene with the 2012 7280R at £46,000. The big one was the 2022 6155M CX72YFA at £74,500 and was followed by the 2015 6215R Premium with 50k Auto Power at £45,000. The 2018 6130M Power Quad with Q4M loader was moved on at £40,200 and the 2008 6930R Premium in so, so condition raised £26,500.

It was all rather hit and miss all through the sale, but stock was changing hands and over half of the John Deere’s made it. But Fendt was popular as ever with the 2014 934 Profi with front linkage yours at £50,000 and the 2013 724 Profi similar up front making £39,400. The highest priced Fendt that sold was the 724 Profi at £52,000 that dated from 2014 so they are holding their prices really well. Finishing off the Fendt section was the ‘baby’ 260V at £9,500.

All told the sale held up well but there is still a shortage of good stock when you get down to it.

FIRST OF THE SEASON

The biggest crowd ever was seen on Sunday 3 September at the very ‘sunny’ Romney Marsh Ploughing Match & Fun Dog Show on A J Thompson & Sons farm at Brenzett Green. It was a great start to the ploughing season as a moment’s silence was taken as everyone remembered vice-chairman Martin Boulden who sadly passed away in December 2020. From last year’s event £3,000 was given away to good causes including Air Ambulance, Romney Marsh Churches, RNLI, Medical Detection Dogs, Scouts and the Stroke Association.

The overall ploughing winner was the experienced John Dungey who was back to top form with his Fordson Standard N and Ransomes plough. He also went on to take the trailed class from Austin West with his so original 1936 Case C and Ransomes plough with Oliver West finishing third with his Oliver 18-28 Ransomes outfit.

B Marsh went on to take the hotly contested Classic class with his Massey Ferguson 135 and Ransomes TS86 plough behind from Ian Linch with his MF 35X and Ransomes TS59 plough. Vintage Mounted went to Ian Hogben with his International B250 and Ransomes TS59, second was C Cullen with his Nuffield Universal 3 and Ransomes TS59.

As for the Semi-Digger, B Young with his Kubota, Kverneland took first and C Young. There were just four entries in the Ferguson ploughing class and M Jones came first with his Ferguson TE-C. The under 25 class went to Emily Watson with her Fordson N and Ransomes trailed plough who finished second in the novice class to E Lovejoy and his International 274 with mounted B12 plough on the back.

The big news was that the steam ploughing demonstration was actually here at last. This area was last steam ploughed in 1955 with Fowler K7 engines of Holman Brothers. Here was Paul Ransley’s superb 1873 Fowler 12hp no. 1908 single-cylinder ploughing engine. It started off as a small pile of bits and a load of drawings some parts even came from Australia. Paul spent over 20 years making it come back together and it is a brilliant piece of engineering.

Interestingly at the other end was 1914 Fowler No.14213 BB compound called Bob, which was the actual engine that replaced no. 1908 when working in Wiltshire. Single-cylinder engines did work this land until the 1930s when compound two-cylinder engines took over. It was a great sight to see them both working and was the highlight of the show for many here. All in all a very well organised show.

GET WELL SOON: At the Swale Ploughing Match on Saturday 9 September a competitor with his petrol Ferguson was involved in a fire that engulfed his clothing and tractor. He was rushed to hospital but was said to be in a stable condition. All at Farm Machinery wish him a speedy return to full health.

HUGE CROWD AT BIDDENDEN TRACTOR FEST

Since the Kent County Agricultural Society took over the running of the Biddenden Tractor Fest two years ago now they have moved this event into another league. The 2023 event was held on 19-20 August in good weather.

Now back on its original site at Holden Farm, Sissinghurst Road, Biddenden, Kent the event is still growing with crowds queuing the full length of one of the many car parks to just get in at 10am each day.

This year John Kingsnorth had 276 tractors on site most of these had an excellent log sheet placed on them telling the massive family crowd all about their machines. But this is just part of a show, which sees over 800 exhibits of all kinds with two parade rings, plus so many other country pursuits. These relate to dogs, horses and other animals through to wine and a huge array of food and other trade stands including a number in the tractor area where at least four Fergusons and parts were sold while at the show.

Last year the event gave away £20,000 to raise money to support the future of agriculture in Kent and to support clubs, amenities and charities within the local area. Many of these, and others, were also supported with free or discounted stands at Biddenden Tractorfest 2023, which they were able to use to generate additional

funds and awareness.

One of the highlights was seeing the pioneering Thompson collection out at this show something that has not seen the light of day for many, many decades. The pioneering working events at Brattle Farm, Staplehurst in the late 1970/80s were always good. The tractors looked rather ‘dusty’ but it was great to see them going in one fashion or another thanks to Rory’s efforts. The IHC Titan here was recovered from the beach in Jersey with one of the front wheels rotted out.

Rodney Gibson’s FFA stand was very popular at the show and was providing many cups of teas, biscuits and had plenty of goodies on their stand that sold well. As it’s the FFA’s 20th anniversary next year it’s hoped to be able to stage the famous FFA Expo here as this show would be ideal to stage it in the county where it all started.

One of the biggest Ford’s here was Ian Sellers original 1982 TW30 two-wheel drive it compared in size to BE Barden’s Ford 2NAN of 1944 one of three of these machines here.

Another tractor looking the part and well restored was the Nick Ward 1952 Fordson Diesel Major. World tractor dealer Mark Hellier had a number of great tractors here including a superb 7600 Q cab, 7810 Jubilee and County 1184 all original clean machines.

The show was a Ferguson paradise with

Fred Crouch’s 1949 TE-20, petrol greeting me and not far away was the J Ellis 1949 TE-D, again in working clothes. There was even a fine original Weathershield cabbed example as well. James Santo had a 1948 TE-A here with its lovely Kent registration KKR 490 and rowcrop wheels on the backend. Lee Blackford had a line of original machines including his 1947 Ferguson TE-20 Continental to his 1959 MF 35 high clearance and another gem was his 1964 MF 35 topped by his 1955 TE-P industrial.

In the line-up was Russell Watts 2022 purchase in the rare grey and gold 1957 FE35 vineyard with a BKP registration supplied by Lenfields of Canterbury. In fact Russell has nearly finished his yellow 35 industrial and it looks a gem. It certainly contrasted with Tim Cathcart’s TE-E20 which is a well restored tractor indeed. Mark Osbourne was enjoying the show with his FE-F diesel a type that didn’t dominate in the grey machines at the show. Further in the line-up of Ferguson by the tractor field entrance was an incredible line of ex KCC Banner Lane machines including Ben Eames 1951 TE-D fleet no.84. I was certainly interesting to see the variations in KCC green and that was the case on Lee Blackford’s 1962 MF 35 industrial fleet no. T7.

MORE APPLICATIONS AND EVEN HIGHER EFFICIENCY

Following the distribution system package featuring fertiliser boots, more equipment options are now available for all the models in the Terria range of Pöttinger, the trailed stubble cultivators with three or four rows.

For even more applications and higher efficiency, the stubble cultivators are now available with the proven Tegosem flexible hopper for sowing seed and applying microgranules. This makes it easy to combine tillage and drilling a cover crop, or applying fertiliser in a single pass. With the Traction Control system, the weight of the stubble cultivator is shifted to the rear axle of the tractor. Less wheel slip is the result, allowing the tractor to deliver power to the ground more efficiently.

GOOD FOR THE SOIL

Working efficiently is becoming increasingly important in the field to take full advantage of planting time frames in addition to meeting deadlines for sowing cover crops after harvest. The Terria with the flexible

Tegosem hopper and a capacity of 500 litres makes this possible. By establishing ground cover rapidly and extensively, unproductive water evaporation is prevented. Likewise, excess nitrogen in the soil is absorbed by the plants and retained on site. Improving and stabilising the soil structure with organisms increases water infiltration while reducing the risk of erosion. By carrying out both tasks in a single pass, the flexible hopper saves time and costs. Reducing the number of

passes conserves the soil and any harmful compaction is avoided.

SIMPLE AND PRECISE

The flexible Tegosem hopper from Pöttinger is equipped with an adaptable metering shaft. This is electrically controlled depending on the driving speed, and it switches off automatically at the headland. Before starting work, the system is optimised by means of a calibration test. A hydraulic fan ensures reliable

transport of the material to the distribution plates. To ensure a uniform spread of material close to the ground and to be able to vary the application point, the angle of the distribution plates can be adjusted by twisting the shaft. The aim is to deposit the seed material in front of the rear roller or at the rear roller for optimum germination conditions. A clear and intuitive control terminal is available for operating the flexible Tegosem hopper. This is used to optimise the settings according to the operating conditions. For increased convenience, the flexible Tegosem hopper is equipped with additional features, including a level sensor.

DELIVERING FULL PULLING POWER

Increased wheel slip not only damages the structure of the soil, it also reduces cost effectiveness by increasing fuel consumption. In order to use the power of the tractor as efficiently as possible, the drawbar can be equipped with the Traction Control hydraulic pulling power booster. This system transfers weight from the stubble cultivator to the rear axle of the tractor. The pressure in the drawbar cylinder can be adapted for different working depths. A weight of up to 1,400 kg can be transferred this way. Ultimately, the system reduces operating costs and increases the efficiency of the machine.

HIGH YIELD LEVELLING

Producing a level working pattern is essential for the follow-up tasks and uniform seed emergence. To further improve levelling in locations with light soil types, Terria models with tandem rear rollers can now be equipped with an optional levelling board instead of the concave discs. This creates even and uniform working results and positively influences the tilth.

MOVES MORE

Terria trailed stubble cultivators with three or four rows and a working width of four to six metres (Terria 4030, 5030, 6030, 4040, 5040, 6040) can handle a wide range of tillage applications. The option of the flexible Tegosem hopper increases versatility even further and enables tasks to be combined into a single pass.

NEW E-SERIES REEL IRRIGATORS

New E-series reel irrigators from Bauer have several improved features to make operation and maintenance easier while maintaining the product’s outstanding reputation for strength, performance and durability.

Adrian Tindall, Bauer UK & Ireland sales manager, said: “Bauer has put in a lot of R&D investment over recent years to equip the market-leading Rainstar E-series for new digital technologies, including the Smart Rain remote monitoring and control app.

“Now, attention has been turned to some aspects of the mechanical components, mainly to improve access for servicing, maintenance and setting-up to further improve the operator experience.”

The most obvious visual change is to the side guard that covers the reel-drive turbine and gearbox – but less obvious is that instead of being held in place by 10 bolts, the new version has catches that when released allow the cover to swing away.

That makes it quicker and easier to access components such as the belt that transfers drive from Bauer’s highlyefficient water turbine to the pulley on the chain and sprocket that slowly rotates the drum to pull in the hose and either a rain gun or boom.

Opening the new cover also reveals a

larger battery to power the Ecostar 6000 controller with its 4.3in LED touch-screen, which is supplemented by membrane buttons for the most frequently used functions.

Adrian Tindall explained: “Users can store up to 12 different irrigation programmes that define retraction speed, pre-irrigation, post-irrigation and speed zones, and then retrieve them at any time to save having to enter individual parameters for every irrigation session.”

Remote access via SMS on a mobile telephone enables irrigation managers to not only stop and start the Rainstar irrigator remotely but also adjust retraction speed, check on the status of the machine and receive error messages.

A ‘run finished’ message can be activated, and thanks to a digital input on the irrigator’s water meter, the Ecostar 6000 controller also records the session and running total of water used.

The battery itself is now kept charged by a more efficient solar panel; it is still fitted flush to the cover but can now be propped at an angle to harvest energy from the sun more effectively.

The Bauer E-series comprises five models from the E 100 to E 500, each available with from seven to 11 different diameter and length combinations.

SUSTAINING SUSTAINABILITY

TIME-SAVING DATASYNC UPGRADE

John Deere Operations Center users can now update field data across their entire machinery fleet in real time.

DataSync has been introduced to eradicate the time taken to manually change records on each in-cab display – usually done via a USB stick – and ensure that stored field data is accurate.

Field names, boundary changes, guidance tracks and flags can now be manually changed in the cab or in the office at the press of a button and shared across the fleet instantly.

Will Downie, John Deere’s Precision Farming Specialist, said: “The John Deere Operations Center is the starting point for precision applications, mapping out the fundamental data operators need to carry out tasks in the field. DataSync consistently provides the right setup information where it’s needed, and at the right time.”

Peter Richardson is the Arable Manager at East Coast Viners Peas and Beans in Montrose, which grows 10,000 acres of vining peas and broad beans.

His team has been using the new functionality since March across a fleet of six John Deere 6R Series tractors.

He said: “With peas we are going into new, rented fields every year with two cultivators and two drills working together. With DataSync

the first tractor maps the field and within seconds the other machines are all working off the same boundaries and A-B lines. It’s been very impressive. DataSync has reduced downtime, soil compaction and overlaps, making everything simple and straightforward for us.”

DataSync is free to activate and can be enabled or disabled for selected machines within the Operations CenterTM, allowing team members differing levels of access.

To use this new feature, the machine must be equipped with a Gen4 display, JDLink modem and an Operations Center account.

It can be fitted with 510 or 610mm discs, with adjustable disc angles. The sizes of the discs make Carrier XL 425-725 well suited for deeper cultivation, incorporating large amounts of crop residues or breaking up pasture. A wide range of front tools further increases the versatility of the machine.

INTELLIGENT, EFFICIENT SOWING

Terrasem seed drills combine effi ciency with the highest level of fl exibility and precision seed placement. In order to comply with feedback from the fi eld in terms of making machines easier to use, the new Profi line comfort control system has been developed for universal seed drill technology.

CONVENIENT OPERATION

Profiline is the comfort control system that covers all the hydraulic functions of Terrasem universal seed drills. The machines are supplied with oil by the tractor’s load sensing connection, and all movements are controlled electro-hydraulically via a hydraulic block. The machine is operated by pressing a button on the control terminal or automatically by the task controller using Section Control and Variable Rate Control. All the tools are positioned automatically and precisely. The fan speed and coulter pressure are also controlled automatically.

SET PRECISELY AND SAVES TIME

During operation, the tools can be precisely adjusted to the site specific conditions. Independent of Section Control, the lifting and lowering sequences can also be set based on time or distance travelled. It is also possible to deactivate individual tools.

Intelligent control can be used to limit the vertical lifting height. Shorter lifting and lowering times allow faster turning times at the headland. Sensor monitoring enables the machine to fold and unfold automatically.

HEADLAND CONTROL

The headland control function stops and restarts the machine precisely at the headland. Without a task controller, this function is controlled at the touch of a button. With a task controller, lifting and lowering is done automatically using the TC-GEO/TC-SC signals.

TASK CONTROLLER GEO

Enabling Task Controller Geo and Section Control means that application maps can be used to operate the machine. The working depth of the disc harrow, coulter pressure and seed/fertiliser rates are then controlled automatically on a site-specific basis. This allows valuable resources to be used efficiently and saved as a result.

TURNING THE CAPITAL GREEN

Merlo UK took on central London recently to celebrate their 30th anniversary in style.

Greeting those arriving at the imposing venue the Renaissance St Pancras Hotel was a Merlo telehandler trio consisting of current and historic models. A fully electric 2023 eWorker 25.5-90, was flanked by the recently restored classic 30-year-old P60.10XS and a current model MultiFarmer 44.9 telehandler.

The guests were able to visit the Gallery Room which saw 30 years’ worth of Merlo memories come to life. A company timeline display –photo montages and archival video footage dating back as far as 1993 offered a fascinating review of the Merlo brands development in the UK.

A number of awards were presented to dealers that had notched up significant periods of service with the Merlo franchise.

Among the awards were two for 30 years as a Merlo dealer; West Wales dealer Brodyr Evans Bros and Devon based CR Willcocks, picking up the honours both having been with Merlo UK since its inception.

The final award of the evening was quite unique in that it went to an individual who had been selling Merlo since 1988 (prior to the founding of Merlo UK). Jeff Jones now of North Yorkshire based Brian Robinson Machinery received an award for 35 continuous years of Merlo sales. Jeff sold new in 1993 the now fully restored P60.10XS model, on display that evening in front of the hotel, it was great to be able to reunite the two of them after 30 years.

Customers ordering any LH Agro-supplied Topcon auto-steering kit through their Kubota dealer can take advantage of free Headland Turns activation worth £625, along with a free 12-month RTK subscription valued at £650. This offer is available until 30 September 2023.

“Headland Turns is a great new feature that lets the operator carry out an automated headland turn without needing to physically steer the tractor,” explained Jonathan Rook, Kubota’s product manager for M-series tractors. “Along with a free 12-month RTK subscription, these two free upgrades will make it much easier for those getting on the precision farming ladder to make greater use of precision farming technology.”

There are a variety of kits available to suit the steer-ready M7 Premium models, and non-steer ready models in Kubota’s M-series. These include Topcon’s AGS-2 receiver, and where required, Topcon’s AES-35 motorised steering wheel to replace the tractor steering wheel. In addition, customers can choose from a range of guidance screens

including the 21.3cm X25, 31cm X35, 17.8cm XD and 30.7cm XD+ terminals. Depending on the chosen kit, customers can also customise the task control options available, or choose from pre-configured bundles.

“With these Topcon auto-steer options, Kubota dealers can now provide precision farming solutions for all M-series tractors from the 66hp M4-063 through to the 170hp M7-173 KVT Premium,” said Jonathan.

COMPACT BUT POWERFUL LOADALL

A new three tonne lift capacity compact telescopic handler has been launched by JCB for the popular 6.0m lift height sector with a comprehensive specifi cation that off ers signifi cant performance and productivity advantages.

The JCB Loadall 530-60 AGRI Super is ideally sized to match the needs of livestock farms with narrow aisles and passages, and caters for the needs of pig and poultry units in particular by combining high levels of power and traction with compact dimensions for productive performance, especially when working inside buildings with restricted height.

Power is provided by a 4.8-litre Stage V emissions-compliant JCB DieselMAX engine with peak outputs of 97kW (130hp) and 550Nm of torque, which is combined with a new two-speed hydrostatic transmission.

This combination delivers a 25% increase in dynamic tractive effort over its predecessor, 527-58 AGRI Plus, which is a real boost to productivity when bulldozing litter from chicken sheds.

JCB’s established VariSpeed control, meanwhile, provides separate engine revs and ground speed adjustment when using hydraulically-driven attachments like a bucket feeder or sweeper.

An overall height of just 2.0m on the 20in tyre option ensures sufficient clearance to work beneath poultry house feeders and drinkers lifted clear for the cleaning-out operation.

To suit outdoor working on muddy and uneven surfaces, the new JCB Loadall 530-60 AGRI Super is also available on 24in tyres for

maximum ground clearance and traction; on these tyres, overall width is just 2.1m and even less on the 20in tyres at 2.0m.

Yet within those tight dimensions, the new Loadall has a JCB Smart Hydraulics package featuring regenerative hydraulics for fast but controlled boom lowering, Smooth Ride System boom suspension, boom-end hydraulic cylinder damping, and bucket shake with minimal control input.

It also has improved visibility and a host of previously optional features installed as standard, taking its equipment level close to that of JCB’s larger Loadall telehandlers.

As a result, the new model will provide much-increased productivity potential for livestock producers who need a nimble, compact machine for daily tasks in and around buildings.

WIDE RANGE OF UPDATES AND NEW MODELS

Horsch has announced a wide range of updates and new models to its cultivator, drill and sprayer ranges, which will be shown to the public at Agritechnica show 2023. “We are always innovating and developing our product range based on feedback from our customers, and from what the Horsch family learn farming our own land in Europe,” explained Stephen Burcham, General Manager for Horsch UK.

“The new Horsch Leeb VT sprayer has a variable track enabling widths from 1.8m to 2.4m, which will be of great interest to contractors, and we expect this to increase sales of our self-propelled sprayers in the UK into a new sector of the market. The new Avatar SL and Sprinter SL drills expand these popular ranges to offer proven features at smaller working widths, while the new Maestro TX features a telescopic frame for a wide variety of row spacings. As always, our goal is to provide the machinery that enables farmers to work the way they want to, with

machinery adapted and developed to meet the needs of UK farmers.”

NEW LEEB VT - SELF-PROPELLED SPRAYER WITH VARIABLE TRACK

The new Horsch Leeb VT combines variable track adjustment with the well-known performance of a Leeb PT self-propelled sprayer. The flexible track adjustment is ideal for mixed crop farms and contractors requiring varying row widths between 1.8m and 2.4m, assisting with stability in the

field and manoeuvrability on the road. The clearance beneath is 1.3m.

Leeb VT features a 5,000 or 6,000 litre tank with a 230hp and 300hp (and Stage V emissions) engine respectively. The smaller model has a new OptiGear drive system which makes efficient use of compact components. The Leeb VT is also the first model to feature a new state-of-the-art comfort cabin pre-fitted for category IV filtration. There is an advanced A-column terminal as standard, and the armrest and joystick were specifically adapted

to crop care applications. Pneumatic fourpoint cabin suspension will be available as an option in the future.

NEW LEEB XERIC – HIGH-CAPACITY FERTILISER SPREADER WITH PRECISION ACCURACY

The Leeb Xeric represents a brand-new product in a new sector for Horsch. Using its proven experience with developing precision sprayers, Horsch has brought the same level of productivity and control to granular fertiliser spreading.

The short time window for spreading fertiliser is a challenge but with a capacity of 14m3, working widths of 36m and 48m, a powerful metering output and high operational speeds up to 20kph, the new Leeb Xeric sets new standards in the market. Advanced features like a 12 section boom, automatic section switch-off and curve compensation bring a new level of precision to granular fertiliser application.

Based on the well proven tandem axle chassis of the Leeb 12 TD sprayer, the Leeb Xeric features BoomControl for precise boom levelling, a metering box with a central metering system and an innovative boom design that has a smooth passage for the fertiliser. This allows for a precise longitudinal and lateral distribution and precise application regardless of wind and a bad fertiliser quality (fertiliser granulate).

AVATAR SD WITH SMALLER WORKING WIDTHS AND UPDATES

The Avatar SD is available in 8m, 9m and 10m working widths with the choice of 6300 litre double hopper or 6,400 litre triple tank, and the ability to mount a 400 litre MiniDrill too. From Spring 2023, it has been possible to equip the machines with trash wheels to cope smoothly with high amounts of straw.

In 2024, the Avatar 12.25 SD and 12.40 SD can be optioned with a selective hosing. This allows for alternately supplying the seed coulters with two different crops. Thanks to the individual depth control, fine seeds can be placed shallow and coarse seeds can be placed deep. In addition, double row spacing can be achieved so that, for example, cereals

can be sown with a spacing of 25cm and soybeans with 50cm. The Avatar 12.50 SD offers a row spacing of 50cm as an option for the 12m version.

The AutoForce system, well-known from the Horsch Maestro, will be shown on an Avatar 10.25 SD at the Agritechnica show. Using hydraulic rams, AutoForce is the only system available to continuously adapt coulter pressure while drilling to prevent compaction on light land or reduced sowing depth on heavy land. This produces an even seed placement which helps crop growth. Row cleaners are now available on the 8m to 12m Avatar models with 25cm row spacing.

AVATAR SL –ALL-NEW MOUNTED MODEL

The all-new Avatar SL is the smallest and most manoeuvrable Avatar seed drill with a mounted three-point configuration designed for precise sowing in mulch seed conditions. The depth control roller of the SingleDisc coulter ensures a regular depth placement

even in uneven conditions. Row spacings of 25cm or 30cm pave the way for mechanical weed control.

The Avatar SL is used in combination with the Horsch Partner front tank. As an option, there will also be a solo version with an 800 litre seed tank in the rear. Hydraulic weight transfer achieves a coulter pressure of up to 240kg per coulter, with the weight of the tractor transferred to the seed coulters. This is useful especially in harder conditions and considerably extends the range of use of the machine.

SPRINTER 6.25 SL AND 12.25 SC TINE SEED DRILLS

Two new models join the popular Sprinter tine seed drill range; Sprinter 6.25 SL and 12.25 SC. Changing climate conditions are bringing about longer dry periods and cultivation methods need to change to the meet the challenge of keeping water in the soil.

The new Sprinter models reduce tillage to a minimum yet work well in high amounts of straw residue, as well as in harder soils. To ensure a perfect seedsoil contact between the grain and seed furrow, the new Sprinters are equipped with a tine seed coulter that creates a residue-free seed furrow. Three different tine coulters (110mm WideEdge, 21mm ThinEdge and 12mm UltraThinEdge) enable the farmer to additionally react to various conditions.

The new 6m SL mounted model works in combination with a Partner FT front tank, while the 12m trailed SC model is equipped with a 6300 litre double hopper and is available with a triple tank and additional MiniDrill options. Both feature tines with a 25cm spacing and a 180kg release force.

MAESTRO TX - UNIVERSAL SINGLE GRAIN SEED DRILL

The new Horsch Maestro TX is a compact, single grain seed drill with three-point linkage. It is equipped with a hydraulic telescopic slide frame on which the seeding units are mounted, allowing them to be expanded and contracted as required with working widths from 2.6m to 4.8m. It offers precise placement of the grain and an optimum embedding at operational speeds of up to 15kph.

On the Maestro 6 TX, common row spacings between 45cm and 80cm can be set and adjusted in 5cm steps. The Maestro 7 TX can also sow with a row spacing of 37.5cm or 40cm. If the middle row is deactivated, the operator can sow conventionally with six rows and a row spacing of 75cm or 80cm. The optional hydraulic weight transfer system

guarantees higher coulter pressure while sowing.

As an option, the new Maestro TX line can be equipped with a 1,300 litre fertiliser hopper and, as standard, is equipped with a fertiliser half-width shut-off. The fertiliser is applied with the Horsch metering devices at the single disc fertiliser coulter for underground fertilisation.

VERSA 6 SW - NEW GENERATION OF THE SEED WAGON COMBINATION

The new Versa 6 SW features a 6m rotary harrow combination with four working zones. The leading tyre packer reduces tracks and distributes the weight of the machine across the whole working width. The rotary harrow ensures an optimum production of fine soil. The following combination of packer and TurboDisc seed coulters ensures

a precise seed placement. The tine spacing of the machine components can be selected between 12.5cm and 15cm.

The Versa 6 SW has a universal three-point linkage allowing the operator to mount the Maestro or Taro lines, as well as the new Sprinter SL and Avatar SL, increasing the flexibility of the machine. It is available with a 4000 litre single hopper or 5000 litre double hopper with 60:40 partition. The fan with the optional oil cooler is directly integrated in the hopper.

PRONTO 7 DC - UPDATED MODEL AND PARADISC SEED COULTER

The new Pronto 7 DC is a universal seed drill that is ideal for different applications, conditions and for use after a wide range of tillage methods. It ensures a precise grain placement and safe emergence even at high operational speeds. In addition to traditional crops like wheat, oil seed rape or barley, it can also be used for sowing catch crops or grass.

Due to a new frame design, the Pronto 7 DC is lighter than the previous generation. In addition to a low horsepower requirement, the drill causes little soil compaction and 7.2m working width enables it to work quickly and efficiently, fitting in to a 36m cultivation system.

It is equipped with TurboDisc seed coulters or the new ParaDisc seed coulter, currently only used in the Pronto 7 DC. The small parallelogram seed coulter maintains seed placement in very heavy and stony soils due to the inertia of the parallelogram and the higher coulter pressure.

TRANSFORMER VS - NEW HOEING TOOL WITH 6M, 9M AND 12M WORKING WIDTHS

The Transformer VS, for Variable Small, is a new hoeing tool available in 6m, 9m and 12m working widths. The design of the hoeing unit allows for row spacings of 25cm and 30cm. Joining the larger VF model, Transformer VS has a compact design that includes the main frame, the fully integrated lateral slide unit and a slide range of 450mm. The lighter, compact design allows it to be used with smaller tractors and offers precise terrain following.

Soil adaption is improved by having one depth control wheel per hoeing unit and point. The short distance from the point to the control wheel enables the hoeing unit to adapt to the terrain more easily. The proven camera equipment from the Transformer VF provides switching between colour-dependent 2D row recognition and colour-independent 3D row recognition. The result is a wide range of applications where the system recognises small plants starting at 2cm.

CURA 18 ST – 18M MODEL EXTENDS CURA RANGE

The new Cura 18 ST features an 18.2m working width, allowing it to fit perfectly into a 36m tramline system. Joining the 15m and 24m models, the Cura ST offers a high hectare output, high stability and a robust, torsionresistant design which is the result of the closed, square tube frame design. The 450mm frame height enables harrowing of high crops and makes the Cura ST a key machine for hybrid as well as for organic farming.

The 28mm spaced and 8mm thick tines of the Cura ST are individually fastened and spring-loaded with a pressure can be adapted from 300g to more than 5kg. This allows for various applications ranging from blind harrowing to breaking crusts or keeping the fields “black”. The angle of the tines can be adjusted via the hydraulically height adjustable support wheels. In the field, the angled side wings are used in a floating position to guarantee a good soil adaption of every single part of the frame.

NEW JOKER 12 RT – SHALLOW MULCHING AND SHALLOW SEEDBED PREPARATION

The Joker RT is ideal for stubble cultivation, mixing of harvest residues and efficient seedbed preparation. It produces a high amount of fine soil in the germination horizon and can handle high amounts of straw, organic fertilisers or catch crops. The new 12 RT completes the previous Joker range with a disc harrow with 12.25m working width. A new folding mechanism and twin axle keep the transport height to 4m.

A new knife roller or a Crossbar can be optioned on the new Joker 12 RT. The knife roller guarantees a safe cutting diagonally to the direction of travel. The knives fit tightly to the rotor and reduce the risk of breaking to a minimum. The Crossbar in front of the discs is ideal for additional levelling, for example, when preparing the seedbed. Depending on the conditions, the Crossbar can be retracted or extended via hydraulic cylinders and the aggressiveness can be adjusted.

CRUISER 9 XL WITH NEW FLEXGRIP TINES

The new 9m Cruiser XL completes the range that is the specialist for shallow tillage, stubble cultivation and straw distribution after the combine. The new FlexGrip tine of the Cruiser 9 XL is pre-stressed with a 180kg release force to maintain a precise working depth even in most difficult conditions. Up to nine support wheels allow for precise contour following and ensure optimum depth control.

The 6-bar design provides excellent mixing and levelling at a maximum working depth up to 15cm. The 17cm tine spacing optimises mixing and crumbling on the surface and the comprehensive packer options guarantee working quality in wet and dry conditions. The cultivator can be equipped with 5cm, 8cm or 10cm wide points with or without carbide. The new 24cm wide point wing ensures an all-over cutting, The wing, too, is either available with or without carbide.

FORTIS 9 AS – A NEW CULTIVATOR GENERATION FOR HIGH WORK RATES

The Fortis AS is a completely new generation of cultivator designed to meet the increasing demands and tractor powers and at the same time offer more variety for working depths.

The new 9m Fortis 9 AS has a maximum working depth of 30cm, ideal for deep loosening and primary soil cultivation. The enormous working width of 8.75m

from tine centre to tine centre allows for high work rates in combination with the largest standard tractors. The well-known TerraGrip tine system provides mounting for all known points and wings.

The 4-bar design of the Fortis 9 AS allows for a 27cm tine spacing. The fourth bar was extended to the rear so there is always enough loose earth in front of the levelling tines to achieve an excellent levelling result. It is equipped with an integrated weight transfer system to increase traction with a vertical load of up to 1.2 tonnes transferred to the rear axle of the tractor to prevent slippage.

HORSCH DIGITAL SOLUTIONS

In the digital sector, Horsch develops numerous solutions that support the user in every step of the process, from the preparations required for using the machine to spare part supply. Depending on the use in the field, there are applications that support the customer with machine adjustment and the direct handling of technology. The objective is to provide a toolbox for the customer by means of user-friendly digital solutions.

HorschConnect is a product family from Horsch that aims to make the exchange of data between machine and customer as efficient as possible, as well as to link customer, dealer and Horsch in a better way. Whether locating the current position of the machine in the field or controlling a seed drill with an app, this can be carried out with HorschConnect.

HorschConnect focuses on the benefits of connectivity and digitalisation. It includes the increasing digitalisation of Horsch machines, using apps like the MobileControl app to control the machine via a smartphone or the HorschConnect Telematics Portal to record telemetry data. HorschConnect optimises the flow of information to ensure customers are better informed.

In addition, new tools have been developed to help the farmer.

• There is a comprehensive database that includes the compatibility of all Horsch ISOBUS machines in combination with the different ISOBUS terminals.

• The Rotor Selection tool supports the customers regarding choosing the appropriate rotor.

• The SmartClip Guide allows the user to carry out the ideal adjustments for the SmartClip metering system quickly and easily.

• To simplify tramline calculation, Horsch offers an innovative online Tramline Calculator.

• The Error Code Lookup tool provides an online error analysis and at the same time recommends what to do.

• To facilitate searching for and ordering spare parts, Horsch has developed the PartFinder. 3D-models transfer the customer machine into the digital Horsch world, fully automatically and starting at the time of production. The individual copy of the machine helps the user to find and order the appropriate spare part quickly, precisely, and efficiently.

Cruiser 9 XL

PERFECT PLOUGHING

Tillage forms the basis of all the subsequent work steps in the process leading to sowing. The ploughed furrow still plays a major role in crop cultivation owing to the benefi ts it brings for crop health and controlling weeds. Arable specialist Pöttinger now introduces a new hitch-mounted reversible plough in the medium power class up to 200hp: the Servo 3000. For this new model, the engineering department has borrowed many of the features of the more powerful Servo 4000 to unite durability, ease of operation and perfect working results.

The Servo 3000 ploughs are available with three to five furrows, as well as various point-to-point spacings and underbeam clearances. The Servo 3000 series also includes Pöttinger’s well-known models the Servo 3000 Standard, the Servo 3000 N with Nova hydraulic stone protection, the Servo 3000 P with Plus furrow width adjustment and the Servo 3000 PN which has both the hydraulic stone protection and furrow width adjustment.

FLEXIBLE CONVENIENCE

The newly designed and clearly laid-out Servomatic control centre with its four-joint linkage makes it quick and easy to set up the plough correctly and adjust it for different tractor geometries. The curved cast yoke means the front furrow width can be set to cover tractor inside track widths of 1,000mm to 1,500mm. A clearly visible scale helps to find the right spindle measurements. Hydraulic adjustment is also available as an option. The beam spindle is located inside the casing and thus perfectly protected from dirt, so it is ready for use at all times. The pulling point is preset at the factory and does not need to be corrected. Any adjustment that may be desired for special circumstances such as ploughing on a slope is nevertheless easily performed using a spindle or a limit stop.

SAFE OPERATION IN THE TOUGHEST CONDITIONS

With the Nova hydraulic stone protection system the Servo 3000 N and PN models are ideally equipped for the toughest working conditions on stony ground. The stone protection system’s cylinders

are arranged between the pressed mounting brackets where they are protected from dirt and damage and pressure is gently applied to them. The result is adjustable triggering pressure from 1,200kg to 1,500kg which increases during triggering, ensuring rapid re-penetration of the mouldboard. During triggering, the mouldboards can move 42cm upwards and 20cm to the side.

The robust turnover mechanism and the sophisticated beam construction guarantee a long service life and safe operation. The heart of the turnover mechanism is the 110mm thick hollow shaft which runs on widely spaced bearings in the robust headstock. In addition, the large turnover unit ensures gentle reversing and reduces the forces exerted. For greater strength, the holes in the 120 x 120 x 10mm frame have been reduced and the pivot points for furrow width adjustment have been placed outside the beam.

ECONOMY AND EFFICIENCY

To exploit the tractor’s pulling power to the full and increase power to the ground, the Traction Control pulling power booster can be integrated into the headstock of five-furrow models. A hydraulic cylinder transfers more weight to the tractor’s rear axle. The resulting improved traction reduces slipping of the tractor’s rear wheels, thus lowering fuel consumption and increasing area output.

High-quality wear parts, gentle reversing and ploughing with a furrow press increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

EXACT INCORPORATION

The best working results and a “clean slate” provide the basis for getting the next crop off to a good start. To guarantee a tidy ploughing pattern, Pöttinger offers proven mouldboards in various shapes and with various material properties for all soil types and ploughing strategies. A wide range of additional tools such as skimmers and disc coulters are also available. Jockey wheels are available as pivot depth wheels, dual depth wheels and transport pivot wheels in various sizes to guarantee perfect depth control. The plough can therefore be fitted with the right tools for any working conditions.

Throughout July & August Kirkland used a roadshow to reach out to customers all over the UK. Customers old and new were able to benefi t from the knowledge and expertise of the Kirkland team as the roadshow visited Scotland, Hereford, Hampshire, Kent and East Anglia!

It was a great turn out and enabled the Kirkland team to catch up with lots of customers as well as meet many new faces. Around 200 visitors attended over the five locations.

Everyone was able to try out different machines and see them working in real life situations.

“At Kirkland we think it is important to keep up to date with our customers and let them know what new machines we have to offer,” said Ben Devine, Sales Manager of Kirkland UK.

“We know that not all fruit growers can spare the time to travel down to our annual Christmas open day or the exhibitions held down in the south of England so we felt it important to take it to them, we understand that their time is precious and strongly thought that they deserved to see and try new machines and talk

face to face with the leading supplier of fruit grower and vineyard machinery,” Ben added.

One of the most popular machines demonstrated at the Kirkland Road Show was the electric Compact Platform. “The Compact electric harvesters and platforms offer a solution to the increasing labour shortages that UK growers are currently facing. Being 100% electric, they will provide growers with maximum efficiency and reduced noise during harvest. It was a great machine to show customers at our Road Shows and had plenty of interest,” said Tilly Shepherd of Kirkland UK.

Case IH apprentices studying land-based engineering at Writtle College University (WUC) based in Essex were thrilled to welcome Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who joined them during a hands-on workshop on tractor maintenance. The PM was visiting the WUC’s campus to speak with young people about their passion for food and the farming sector. The apprentices spent time chatting with the PM about the workshop whilst demonstrating their understanding of agricultural machinery.

The students are studying through a partnership launched in 2022 by CNH (manufacturers of Case IH Agriculture) with WUC to address the skills gap for specialist engineers within the agricultural sector. The apprentices are all currently employed by Case IH Agriculture local dealerships throughout England. CNH is passionate about supporting young people within the land-based education sector to ensure that the technologies of tomorrow are taught to the students whilst adhering to a high level of technical standards. CNH also run a similar

scheme in Scotland at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) Oatridge campus.
