A USED SELF-PROPELLED SPRAYER ON A NEW TRAILED SPRAYER BUDGET?

A tempting headline. It is possible to buy a pre-owned, factory prepared, SAM Vision sprayer with a 3,000 litre tank and 24m booms from upwards of £45k. That entry-level sum would struggle to buy you a new trailed sprayer from one of the many continental manufacturers. Tempting, but as you would expect, going self-propelled does need a bit of thinking through.

Here we are going to look at two generations of Sands Agricultural Machinery self-propelled sprayers, the SAM Vision models produced from 2009-2015 and the still current SAM Horizon range introduced in 2014. The specifications outlined in the model tables will give you a broad brushed idea of machines that are available, but as these sprayers are built to match the original customers needs it of course follows that few will have left the factory in Brunstead, Norfolk, with exactly the same build.

Consider this when looking at what is becoming available as a used buy. If the specification of an available used sprayer does not match your specific needs this does not necessarily mean you have to wait for a model that does. These sprayers are designed to accommodate various changes and upgrades. But one aspect you need to think through is boom width.

These days, a 30m boom is pretty much the ‘entry level’, with very few Horizon models having sold with the once common 24m boom width. Whilst it is possible to cost effectively ‘reduce’ the width of a

30m, 32m or 36m boom, it is unlikely to be economically viable to extend a 24m boom to 30m or more. (Horizon sprayers can be fitted with booms of up to 40m)

This raises an important point. How do you expect your ‘new’ pre-owned sprayer to fit into your business? If you currently work to 24m tramlines are you going to stick with this for the life of your ‘new’ used sprayer? Are you considering moving from broadcasting solid fertiliser at 24m to using a sprayer to apply liquids or can you broadcast to a wider 30m? Will your sprayer see you seeking extra work to justify the investment? Will the boom width you select now restrict what you can take on in the future? All obvious, but boom width is a starting point that you may get wrong. Know the boom size you need, fix a budget and work from there.

If you are after a pre-owned Sands sprayer, you have to plan ahead too. The bulk of Vision and Horizon models offered for re-sale will have come in as a part-exchange against a new model, and it is those in the used buying queue that will get the first chance to select from the list of incoming units.

incoming models a simple wash and brush up for resale. All models offered for retail sale will undergo comprehensive fettling, backed by a used buyer warranty. In addition, certain modifications and upgrades may also be carried out. This will give the used buyer the option to possibly ‘bespoke’ a pre-owned buy.

This brings the opening headline into context. It may be possible to purchase a used 24m Vison 3000 or 4000 litre sprayer for around £45,000. This could potentially buy a machine showing between 5,000 to 7,000 hours on the clock and include features such as GPS guidance, boom section control and both flotation and rowcrop wheels. We say ‘could’ because there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Sands sprayer.

Further, how sprayers are purchased as a used buy changes as they age. Some of the earliest Vison sprayers may now be with their second or perhaps third owner and become more likely to drop out of a ‘planned’ replacement and upgrade cycle.

This could well mean you can find a Vison sprayer for sale from another source, Sands suggest you get in touch with them if you do see something you like the look of.

WHAT’S USED

SAM offer a choice of screen and controller systems to include Topcon and Trimble from new, but it is Ag Leader that is fitted to the majority of sprayers. Ag Leader systems can be updated with free software upgrades. If you are after a particular system to fit a used buy, talk it through before assuming a swap will be viable.

Current Horizon cab is fitted with a flat panel control that is easier to keep clean, with the key function groups colour coded. Joystick buttons can be customised to suit the user, the Horizon electronics offering more features and versatility than the mechanical systems employed on the Vision. In work, the Horizon cab will be noticeably quieter.

<< The company has comprehensive machine records and may be able to give you some tips and pointers relating to any of its sprayers you come across as a potential used buy. Further, the company is always keen to build links with the new owner of any SAM model as it has the parts and technical support available to keep older machines up and running.

This will apply to SAM SL and SLc sprayers, many very much remaining in service in the UK and much further afield. Launched in 2001, the SL range ran up until around 2009 and although now getting a bit long in the tooth, SL/SLc models can still make a viable choice if one comes up with the spec you are

after. That said, it is still advisable to give Sands a call and seek their advice. Investment in an older unit needs to balance purchase price with future maintenance demands.

Moving to the Horizon range, these arrived in 2014, briefly overlapping the Vison due to the factory completing existing orders. The Horizon shares the same SAM design DNA as its predecessor but benefits from a number of developments, not least being the cab. Sands cabs had long stuck with the ‘trademark’ SAM sliding door, the Horizon having moved to a conventional cab door. This enables the cab to meet Cat 4 cab filtration standards as it proved difficult to fully seal the existing slide design.

The cab on Vision models is roomy, with good all round visibility and well laid out controls ensuring it still feels up to date. Take time checking everything over and expect the cab to clean up well.

Although a Vision cab will be fitted with active carbon filtration and still does a decent job, the Horizon cab offers superior filtration and is also claimed to be 4dB(A) quieter.

A Vision cab remains a decent place in which to spend a long working day. Spacious and offering good all-round visibility, the switch control panel is well laid out and the mechanical fill controls on the tank are well proven and hardly difficult to use either. But the Horizon cab is a definite notch up from its predecessor. Worth a premium over the Vision? Try the sprayers back to back and decide for yourself.

Other Horizon developments are significant, to include a move to 4,000 litres as the entry level capacity with the range now including models of 6,000 litres. The power units all moved to Stage IV compliant engines with SCR emission control and with it the need for AdBlue. The hydrostatic drive also got a significant makeover, the newer design better suiting extended fast road travel at up to 45km/ hr and also gaining a boost in performance and efficiency. Other changes can include the addition of dynamic braking. Power outputs and other details are listed in the models table.

As to booms, the design fitted to Vision and Horizon models have evolved rather than seen radical design change, with a choice between standard and heavier duty VG designs. The boom suspension system is tried and tested, with automated ultrasonic levelling and other options such as dual spray lines remaining a potential retrofit to an existing machine if necessary. As

In addition to a general service, extra work will include:

• Engine coolant and belts changed. Valve clearances checked and adjusted

• Transmission. Full service and diagnostic checks

• Boom. All bushes and rollers replaced to bring up to ‘as new’

• Chassis. Full inspection.

Steering ram rollers replaced with updated wear strip

• Cab. Filters renewed. All seals checked

• Spraying system. Full system check. All sprayers sold with new spray test certificate

• Retro fit upgrades to customer requirements

• General. Comprehensive clean and new paint as necessary

an aside, alternative boom designs could include the Airstream 24m boom. If you need a specific boom build, alert the company and they will be able to say if a machine is likely to come in with the spec you are after.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

A key value pointer with a SAM sprayer is overall condition and not so much operating hours. According to the company, the Deutz power units used in all its models are dependable and it is not unusual for these engines to run for between 15,000 to even 20,000 hours without the need for a major overhaul if they have been serviced at the required intervals.

As to the transmission, Sands continue to use Bosch-Rexroth pumps and Poclain wheel motors. Of equal importance the company are approved service agents for all the systems it uses. This means motors and pumps can be looked after in-house rather than be sent away for repair or refurbishment. It is tempting to suggest you, as a used buyer, can take a sprayer out for a test drive and pick up any problems in the driveline by looking for certain tell-tell pointers to a potential problem.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT TO PAY?

Entry level money is £45,000 for a pre-2012 24m boom Vision, 2012 to 2015 models typically having lower hours and more likely to have a 30m or wider boom. Well-used models from this period will start at £55,000 and climb to over £85,000 for a Vision 5.5 with 5,500 litre spray tank with 241hp engine and Premier Drive System with dynamic disc brakes on all wheels.

Horizon models are now starting to reach the pre-owned market, with 30m boom now considered entry level. Prices from around £90,000.

Vision models would have had mechanical valves as standard, these having an easy to understand operating sequence liked by users.

If you are after a particular model, make SAM aware of your interest as soon as possible. It may be possible to visit a prospective used buy whilst still in service with the existing owner.

WHAT’S USED

I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME…

to consider investing in a sprayer with 30m plus booms. Whilst it is possible to make a 24m SAM boom wider, the ‘conversion’ will be both heavier and more expensive than buying the wider boom in the first place. Further, a 30m boom can be more economically converted to 32m and 36m sizes or even reduced to 24m if necessary. Understand the weight differences between various models. The bigger the tank, the heavier the machine, even when empty.

A single spray line with twin chamber

Duo-React bodies is a popular specification choice. Offering a quick changeover between spray and fertiliser application, the system can be retrofitted to replace spray only bodies. Numerous spray options are available, with numerous spec changes on offer to pre-owned buyers.

... A Vision sprayer may be older technically, but these models are a good choice for those who look after their own equipment. If you run into a problem, Sands will, within reason, offer support over the telephone.

... If the sprayer is going to do a lot of road work and transport speed is important, the Horizon is the model to hold out for. Used examples are now becoming available and will offer transport speeds of up to 49kph.

Most Vision and Horizon sprayer models are sold with an Ag Leader display and control system. Although the ‘hardware’ may change between models and model years, the software can be upgraded to current specs (but older hardware may not work as quickly as more current systems).

... Single spray lines can be retro-fitted with Duo-React switchable chamber body. This allows an easy swap between two chemical nozzles and a switch to high application rate liquid fertiliser.

... Automatic boom levelling and automated section control can be retrofitted to most boom types.

... No approved sprayer wash area? Sands can retrofit a pressure washer with hose reel to allow the sprayer to be cleaned in the field.

Remember, condition is more important than hours and never be afraid to seek advice.

The Sands ultrasonic boom levelling system is typically specified on most 30m plus booms but can be retrofitted to a used buy if absent. Pictured boom has been refinished with all new pivot points, hoses and rebuilt hydraulic rams.

A 2 inch or 3 inch fast fill system, with hydraulic drive, is an option that can be retrofitted to a pre-owned buy. Note access to engine oil filters, with remote sump drain system.

As well as offering a choice of working and section width, Sands also produce both standard and heavy-duty booms. The latter are favoured by those spraying vegetable and root crops, but they do add weight.

WHAT’S USED

<< hydraulic hose runs, all spray hoses etc will have been checked and renewed as necessary. These sprayers should make for a worry free pre-owned buy.

In practice the best way to test the hydrostatic drive is to run it through a proper diagnostic check. If you are considering buying a sprayer that has not been either recently serviced by Sands or is sold privately, seek advice. If you spot any leaks, such as from a wheel motor, do not assume it will need just a new seal to fix it. By the time a leak appears, a problem within a wheel motor may have progressed beyond a simple fix to something more costly.

NOTE: Sands recommend the hydrostatic drive is fitted with new pressure and return filters every 250 hours with a complete oil change every 3,000 hours. The latter should be done by an approved agent as it goes beyond simply draining the oil tank.

Although a recent spray test is a good sign it is obvious that a pass only applied when the machine was checked. Even a few days later the same machine could fail so just assume a non-prepared buy will need attention. A service history really can help you see how well the machine has been cared for.

As for other checks, a lot will depend upon the machine you are looking at. If the sprayer has been through the factory it will be sound mechanically. Vital items to include the steering joints, Panhard rod couplings, wheel motors,

Looking at a Sands sprayer that has not been through a workshop? Make a telephone call to the company and ask for advice. These sprayers are not mass produced and there is every likelihood the sprayer in question will be known to the factory.

SUMMARY

A pre-owned buy is a great way of getting onto the self-propelled sprayer ladder, the more so if you purchase the right model, look after it and then use its retained value to trade up to a newer unit a few seasons down the line. According to Sands, an increasing number of those who became a customer for a used buy eventually reach the point where they are able to invest in a new unit. Demand for good pre-owned self-propelled sprayers outstrips supply but do not let this bounce you into making a poor buying decision. The most important task is to work out how much it will cost to use the machine over its expected lifespan and punch a calculator to establish the true cost of ownership over the sprayers anticipated lifespan.

Either a 300 or optional 400 litre Immovilli five-cylinder spray pump will be fitted to a used buy. These pumps are dependable and can be refurbished if necessary.

Take a good look at the rear of the sprayer, wear in the boom raise/ lower frame not typically proving a problem but still look. Note position of induction hopper and spray pump. Service access is good.

If you crawl under a sprayer that has been prepared by the factory for sale, you will see just how much work goes into the smaller details you can miss when looking over a pre-owned buy. New steering joints, tidied hose runs, modified steering rack and a thorough clean are all easy to spot.

ONE DRILL, MANY CROPS

Maschio Gaspardo has launched a new version of its high-speed Chrono precision drill.

The Chrono 500 is a mounted machine which has a key feature that sets it apart from anything else. It can be set up to run with variable row spacings and is equipped with either 8 or 12 planting units, making it suitable for sowing a range of crops with 45cm, 50cm, 70cm or 75cm row spacings. This versatility makes it possible for the operator to switch from drilling sugar beet in the morning to maize in the afternoon, the conversion taking less than two hours.

Whether customers opt for the fixed row variant or the variable spacing option, the 500-series shares all the common features with the other high-speed precision planters in the Chrono range.

When it was launched in 2020, the Gaspardo Chrono brought a new level of sophistication to precision drilling. With a completely new seed delivery system, air bag suspension for each unit and electronicallycontrolled metering for both seed and fertiliser, the Chrono range offered fastpaced precision drilling with unrivalled seed placement and depth control.

While conventional precision drills might run at 7-8kph, the Chrono has the potential to at least double these work-rates, at the same time improving the accuracy of seed spacing and depth placement.

This level of precision is all down to the design of the metering unit. Using a combination of traditional vacuum singulation and then pressure delivery down the coulter tube, the moment the seed leaves the metering disc it is kept under control. The Chrono doesn’t just leave it to gravity to ensure seed ends up in the ground, a venturi puts it under positive pressure, controlling its speed and therefore ensuring it ends up in the soil without bounce.

Aside from conventional vacuum singulation, the other factor that makes for ultra-accurate seed spacing is the angle of each metering unit. Set on an incline of 15 degrees, seed drops off the disc and straight down the coulter tube without touching the sides. This means it is not slowed up at any point with the result that seed spacing is consistently uniform.

As well as providing protection against shock-loading from stones and obstacles, the system maintains constant down-pressure,

avoiding the units bouncing at speed. With the ability to adjust coulter pressure to cater for differing conditions, this ensures uniform seeding depth at high workrates.

The Chrono is fully ISOBUS-compatible enabling all its functions and adjustments to be handled either through an existing tractor terminal or an additional ISOBUS controller. In combination with the electronically-driven seeding units and microgranular applicator, the GPS-compatible drill controller also provides automatic row shut-off/section control and the potential for variable rate seeding and fertiliser applications.

Prices start from £76,535 for a standard fixed width 8-row Chrono 508, while variable row spacing and four additional planter units will add in the region of £8,950 to the base price.

AVADEX APPLICATION FOR SKY EASYDRILL

New to the market, and showcased at Groundswell 2023, is a mounting kit to fit a Stocks Ag Turbo Jet 10 to a trailed Sky EasyDrill. The new mounting kit allows separate metering and accurate application of Avadex through an additional set of outlets behind the drill’s press wheel.

The mounting kit is designed to integrate with the Sky EasyDrill and consists of a loading platform, steps and guard rail to meet all safety regulations and maintain a safe environment for the operator.

The Turbo Jet on display at Groundswell was specified for the 6m Sky EasyDrill, it was colour matched, fitted with a 240ltr hopper and included an Avadex feed block metering roller, 32mm seed hoses and 10 outlet spreader plates, allowing for an even application. The Turbo Jet Avadex applicator fitting kit is also available for the 4m and 8m EasyDrill; 4m specified with a Turbo Jet 8 (8 Outlets), whilst the 8m EasyDrill is specified with the Turbo Jet 10 (20 outlets), with the option of a 400lt hopper. For ease of operation, the Turbo Jet 10 is fitted with the intuitive i-CON Control, which allows for rates to be automatically controlled in proportion to forward speed for ultimate accuracy. When the Turbo Jet is not being utilised for Avadex application it can be used as an additional applicator enabling a fully specified drill to apply five products at once through three different outlets. Furthermore, the

Turbo Jet can apply variable rates of product according to mapping data using a GPS based touch screen.

Stocks Ag, Aftersales Director Tim Farrow, said: “With this new option available to market, we aim to meet the needs of Sky EasyDrill owners that are looking for an applicator that will precisely meter and accurately spread Avadex granules through a separate distribution circuit. The granules are applied directly to the seed bed behind the drill allowing for a consistent even spread pattern.

“The application accuracy of the Turbo Jet mounted on a Sky drill has been independently tested and exceeds NSTS requirements.”

Although the Turbo Jet is the ideal applicator for Avadex it can also be used for applying clover seed, full-rate grass reseeds, and cover crops.

It can be fitted with 510 or 610mm discs, with adjustable disc angles. The sizes of the discs make Carrier XL 425-725 well suited for deeper cultivation, incorporating large amounts of crop residues or breaking up pasture. A wide range of front tools further increases the versatility of the machine.

POWERFUL PERFORMANCE WITH MAXIMUM WORKING WIDTHS

The new mower combinations Novacat V 8400 and Novacat V 9200 from Pöttinger are the professionals for delivering the highest possible output. A powerful performance with maximum working widths of 8.40 and 9.20 metres, combined with a compact design, are what makes these mowers stand out. The innovative agricultural machinery manufacturer launched the even larger version of the mower combination, the Novacat V 10000, last year.

COMPACT UNIT

Angled booms allow for an extremely short headstock. This creates a lighterweight configuration with the centre of gravity closer to the tractor. Depending on the terrain, both the mower combinations can easily be operated with four cylinder tractors.

THE BEST FORAGE

The heart of these mower combinations is the cutter bar, proven over thousands of

cuts in the field. Just 4cm high, the cutter bar guarantees optimum crop flow and because it is only 28cm deep, it delivers the best ground tracking. The centre pivot mounting on the mower units provides a floating travel of +20°/-16° to ensure perfect ground tracking. Hydraulic weight alleviation provides uniform ground pressure over the whole cutter bar width.

HIGHEST RELIABILITY

The Nonstop Lift hydraulic collision safety device provides optimum protection of the cutter bar. In addition, the mower efficiently avoids obstacles by folding backwards and at the same time raising the boom. This prevents damage to the mower unit even at higher speeds.

FLEXIBLE OPERATION

The mower combinations are easy to operate because they are equipped with the Basicline preselect system as standard. As an option, the ISOBUS-compatible Selectline preselect control system is also

available. On both systems, both mower units can be lifted separately using just one spool valve, which also actuates the transport safety interlock. With the Selectline preselect control system, the automatic individual lift system makes it easy to mow wedge-shaped fields. If the tractors offer headland management, then individual lifting using two separate spool valves is also possible.

For road transport, the mower is hydraulically folded vertically through 92° and then locked hydraulically in the transport position. When attaching and detaching the mower combination, the retractable front guard provides plenty of space between the tractor tyres and the mower.

Both mower combinations are available with swath formers, ED tine-type conditioners or RC roller conditioners.

With these mower combinations, Pöttinger combines high output performance with intelligent technology to put the satisfaction back into mowing.

TAKING THE PRESSURE OFF

Yokohama TWS presents the first multibrand smartphone app designed to help farmers apply exactly the right pressure to their tyres, according to axle loads, speeds, size and tyre brand.

The Agro Tyre Pressure app, developed together with other major tyre manufacturers, puts safety, fuel savings and soil protection right in the hands of farmers so they can get the precise pressure right when and where they need it.

The Agro Tyre Pressure app is ready for download to iOS and Android phones. Available in four languages, (English, French, German and Polish), the app combines databases of 12 leading brands, including the Yokohama TWS portfolio: Trelleborg, Mitas, Maximo and Cultor.

COMPACT TRACTOR RANGE

Claas has unveiled two new compact tractors with power outputs of 92hp and 103hp, making them ideal for mixed and speciality crop farms as well as small scale full-time and part-time farms.

The new Axos 230 and 240 offer a host of different technical features relating to performance, power transmission, comfort and payload to suit different customer specifications and fields of application. The specification includes power outputs of 92hp and 103hp, a five speed powershift transmission with Revershift and Twinshift, wheel sizes up to 34 inches, a gross vehicle weight 6.0 t and a flat floor with a comfortable command centre.

Fitting in below the Arion 400 range, the Axos 200 is a sturdy, capable yet compact all-rounder that performs well even on challenging terrain, in arable and vegetable crops or forestry. With a height of 2.62m, it can also pass through low entrances and is astonishingly agile thanks to a minimum turning radius of 3.79m.

POWERFUL, EFFICIENT AND LOW-MAINTENANCE

Power for the Axos 200 range comes from state-of-the-art FPT four-cylinder turbo engines with common-rail injection and Stage V emissions standard. The 3.6 litre engine features 1800 bar injection pressure, wastegate turbocharger, intercooler and viscous fan, with maximum power output at 2000rpm. Maximum torque on the Axos

230 is 366, rising to 406 Nm for the 240. Full engine torque is available across a wide speed range.

The fuel tank capacity is 105 litres and in addition to that is the 10 litre urea tank (AdBlue) for the exhaust gas after treatment system. The Stage V exhaust gas cleaning system features an SCR catalytic converter, diesel particulate filter (DPF), diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) and externally cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). All components are housed beneath the bonnet outside the driver’s field of vision. The slender exhaust pipe fits perfectly in front of the left A-pillar without impairing visibility, and without compromising the low, narrow bonnet design. Alternatively, the exhaust pipe can be integrated between the right-hand step and the front console where it is well protected.

Instead of one engine speed memory, a version with two engine speed memories is optionally available. This is particularly useful when working with pto driven or hydraulically operated implements.

ALWAYS AT THE RIGHT SPEED

The five-speed transmission in the Axos 200 provides 30 forward and 15 reverse gears, with as many as 10 gears in the main operating range and a short shift lever for easy shifting. Twinshift powershift transmission – which increases tractive power by 20% at the press

of a button – and the electrohydraulic Revershift clutchless reverser are included as standard. Another comfort feature that is normally associated with large tractors is the clutch button on the back of the shift lever – which eliminates the use of the foot clutch in virtually all operations, especially road journeys – and the optional Smart Stop function, which automatically disengages the transmission to bring the tractor to a standstill when the foot brake is applied and re-engages it when the foot brake is released. These transmissions reach a top speed of 40 km/h at just 1750rpm.

FROM TRACTOR TO IMPLEMENT CARRIER

With a lift capacity of 3,350kg, the Axos 200 can easily handle standard cultivation or grass management implements and grounds maintenance equipment. Both models can also be optionally fitted with a front loader with a lift capacity of 3,200kg – more than enough for front-mounted attachments. The Axos 200 has an open-centre hydraulic system with an output of 87 l/min as standard, with an optional third pump available to increase output to 114 l/min. For this, the Axos 200 can be supplied with an electrohydraulic operating system with Electropilot and rocker switches as an alternative to the standard mechanical version. At the rear, up to three double-acting spool valves and a free-flow return line are available, while a fourth double-acting spool valve is available with the third pump option. In addition, Axos can be fitted with two mid-mount double-acting connections for use with front loaders.

The pto specification is equally impressive: as an alternative to the 1000/540, the Axos 200 can be equipped with the 540/540E combination and a ground-speed pto can also be supplied as an option. Furthermore, a front pto with 1,000rpm or 540E is available for the front linkage.

A PERFECT FIT

Tailor-made front loaders from the Claas range make the Axos 200 even more versatile. Axos 200 tractors can be fitted with the larger FL 80 series (hydraulic self-levelling linkage) and the FL 80 C series (mechanical self-levelling linkage), in addition to the FL 60 front loader with PCH hydraulic self-levelling linkage and the FL C 40 / 60 and FL E 40 / 60 series with mechanical self-levelling linkage.

Claas is extending its combine harvester product range below the Trion and Lexion series with two new five-walker machines. Equipped with modern Cummins six-cylinder engines and the Cemis 700 control concept, these compact machines take performance, convenience, flexibility and durability to a new level in this class. The Evion Classic is a perfect fit for family farms as well as for contractors with smaller field sizes.

Two new five-walker combine harvesters in the Evion model series round out the lower end of the Claas combine harvester range.

THE LATEST THRESHING TECHNOLOGY

The arrival of the Evion completes the restructuring of the entire Claas combine harvester range which began with the new Lexion in 2019. As successors to the Avero and the smaller Tucano models, these three five-walker combine harvesters round out the lower end of the range below the Trion. “The Evion is a very important product for Claas”, explained Claas CEO Jan-Hendrik Mohr who is also responsible for the Grain Business Unit. “With these new combine harvesters we are able to offer modern, yet affordable machines for smaller-scale farms which want their own grain harvesting equipment.”

The technology of the Evion is based on a modular system which is used to build almost 40 versions of the Lexion and Trion.

STRAIGHTFORWARD THRESHING WITH A LARGE DRUM AND MAXIMUM OPERATING RELIABILITY

As well as focusing on using high-quality, proven components, delivering uncompromising threshing quality and ensuring operating reliability, even under difficult harvesting conditions, the development team have ensured that the Evion is easy to use. It is therefore equipped with a single-drum tangential threshing unit with a large, 600mm threshing drum and a synchronised impeller combined with five 4.40m long straw walkers and a feeder housing width of 1,420mm. This results in an impressive threshing concave area of 0.95m2 and a separation area of 6.25m2 provided by the straw walkers. Complemented by the standard preconcave flaps under the threshing

drum, this arrangement enables high throughput while also delivering excellent grain quality.

The threshing drum speed in the Evion Classic is infinitely adjustable over a range of 480rpm to 1,150rpm (420rpm- 1,080rpm with reduction kit) using the Cemis 700 terminal. Concave clearance adjustment is performed hydraulically from the cab and features integrated overload protection provided by a diaphragm accumulator to prevent blockages from occurring in the threshing unit. As the threshing concave in the Evion Classic is a Multicrop unit, conversion measures are only needed rarely, if ever, when switching between common threshing crops. When conversion is required, the concave segments can be swapped out easily through the stone trap.

In order to provide more effective secondary separation and greater throughput, the centre risers of the straw walkers have been redesigned to loosen the crop mat even more effectively and to enable a faster transfer to the next straw walker racks. Another important factor – in addition to the threshing concave overload protection –in ensuring operating reliability is the sensor-based monitoring of the crop flow on the straw walkers. As soon as any blockages begin to develop there as a result of difficult harvesting conditions, the operator receives early warning both in the form of an audible alarm and as a visual alert on the Cemis 700 terminal display. In addition, the optional Cemos Auto Crop Flow automatically deactivates the front attachment and the feeder unit in the event of any imminent risk of blockages on the threshing drum or serious belt slippage so that no more crop is fed in. This avoids unnecessary downtime.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE CLEANING

Despite the compact exterior dimensions of the Evion, the development team were able to integrate an extremely efficient cleaning system. The sieve pan works with the upper and lower sieves moving in opposite directions and has a total sieve area of 4.80m2. The sieve design, which features frogmouth openings with optimised flow characteristics, has already proven itself over and over again in the Lexion and Trion under extremely varied operating conditions.

In addition to electric sieve adjustment, the standard equipment for all Evion models includes a loss measurement system. Adjustment of the speed of the radial fan is performed from the cab – and can even be controlled automatically with the optional Auto Slope functionality when harvesting uphill or downhill. An inspection window allows the returns to be viewed conveniently from the operator’s seat. Available as an option is the 3D cleaning system, which is able to compensate for a lateral tilt of up to 20% when harvesting on slopes.

LARGE GRAIN TANKS AND POWERFUL ELEVATORS

The grain tank integrated behind the cab holds 5,600 litres in the Evion 410 and 6,500 litres in the Evion 430. Sensors alert the operator when the fill level reaches 70% and then 100%. In addition to this functionality, a large grain tank inspection window gives the operator a direct, comprehensive view of the fill level and grain quality. When it comes to unloading, all three Evion models benefit from the 330mm diameter of the grain tank unloading auger and the resulting 90 litre per second unloading rate – meaning that offloading can be completed in 1 to 1.5 minutes. The 105-degree pivot angle of the grain tank unloading auger ensures that the operator always has a perfect view of the offloading process. A pivoting unloading spout, is available as an option to provide high-precision control of the grain stream directed at the transport vehicle. Another powerful argument in favour of the Evion models is to be found in the grain elevator which has an increased conveying capacity of 34 l/s.

STRAW CHOPPING AND SPREADING

At medium to high-yield locations in particular, farmers attach great importance to good straw chopping and spreading. This is why, in a first for this class, the Evion is available with an optional 72-knife straw chopper as an alternative to the standard 52-knife version. Both shear bar and friction bar can be adjusted without tools while the switchover from chopping to swathing is performed at the right-hand side of the straw discharge hood. The straw guide plates are adjusted manually to the working width so that uniform distribution is ensured even when operating with a cutterbar width of 6.80m. Chaff and short straw are distributed across the working width by optional, hydraulically driven chaff spreaders.

Well here we are and its September already and I know you are looking forward to the ploughing season which has really started in Kent with the Romney Marsh event.

Farm Machinery magazine will be at the famous Weald of Kent Ploughing Match at Reed Court Farm, Hunton Road, Chainhurst, Tonbridge, Kent, TN12 9SX by kind permission of Fridays Ltd on Saturday 16 September. The South East Farmer will have a stand at the event and I will be about on site so do come and have a chat if I can be of some help to you.

Many of you will think that Covid-19 is a thing of the past, but it’s not! As I mentioned in my August introduction I was to fly from Gatwick to Edinburgh where I was taken to near Inverness to look at a huge collection of tractors and trucks that you will read more about

in these pages. I flew back the following day where I feel I caught the ‘dreaded’ Covid-19, but I didn’t know it at the time.

The next day I was down to Dover Docks and 2.5 hours later I was on a half empty ferry to Calais even though there were trucks on the M20 all the way back to Ashford. Some 7 hours later I was in our hotel near Panningen, The Netherlands at Europe’s greatest tractor rally with over 3,000 classic tractors.

It was to be a great experience even though I was rather unwell but I was glad to be back, since my last visit was in 2017. On my return I was to be laid low with Covid-19 for 11 days feeling much worse for ware compared to 2021 when I had it for 21 days. Although we laugh at these people who still wear masks they have a point to make when you get down to it so all I am saying is please be careful Covid-19 has not gone away.

BRITISH PLOUGHING RETURNS TO SOMERSET

The organisers of the annual British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival are delighted that the event will return to Somerset this year, when it will be held on 14-15 October 2023. This fantastic event, held in a different part of the country each year, will be returning to Somerset for only the seventh time in its’ 72 year history when the Championships will be held on land at Bishop’s Lydeard, near Taunton by kind permission of K S Coles and family.

Partnering once again with Cereals Event, the Championships are proving to be as popular as ever, with a deluge of both trade exhibitors/demonstrators and ploughing entries which will fill the massive 250 acres (100 hectares) site.

Over the two days, with a total of around

300 ploughing plots to complete, ploughmen and women from throughout Great Britain will be striving for perfection and will use a variety of modern tractors, vintage tractors or magnificent heavy horses to do so. They will be in one of 15 different ploughing classes or the six Plough-Off Finals and their aim is to be British Champion in their respective discipline. If they do well and become Supreme Champion naturally they will represent us in the 2024 World or European Ploughing Contests.

One of the most popular attractions from the past are the giant steam ploughing engines which will be pulling an anti-balance plough from one end of the field to the other. There will also be hedge laying competitions and demonstrations in varying different styles and to get around the fields to see everything, tractor and trailer rides will be provided.

VINTAGE PLOUGH SELLS FOR £34,720

Over 1,400 lots of classic tractors, commercial vehicles, motorbikes and collectors’ items were offered for sale at the Cheffins Vintage Sale on Friday 21-22 July, taking place at the firm’s saleground at Sutton, near Ely.

Highlights among the vintage and classic tractors and implements included a low hours immaculate 2007 New Holland T6070 which sold

for £53,000, followed by a c1919 Saunderson Tractor & Implement Co two-furrow ride-on tractor plough which achieved £34,720 sold to a local East Anglian collector. This was followed by a restored 1949 Field Marshall Series II Contractors MkII grade 4.7 £24,120 and the similar grade Marshall Model M with winch sold to a buyer from Leicestershire for £21,654.

SUPERB SALE IN SHEFFIELD BILL KEMBALL SURPLUS SALE

The H J Pugh team head to Sheffield, Yorkshire on Saturday 16 September when they conduct a fine preservation collector’s sale for a person who is retiring from the movement. It includes steam, tractors, stationary engines, threshing tackle, crawlers, Land Rovers, Ferguson implements and a quantity of tools. There is a lovely Ransomes 54in drum in the sale and a fine Nicholsons BPI baler press. The tractors are very clean and go as well as they look, like the JCB 1135. Do go online for more details.

The well known East Anglian collector Bill Kemball has decided to hold a surplus sale to create more room at his amazing Bentwaters Park museum near Woodbridge, Suffolk.

The sale will only be the tip of the iceberg as to what Bill has collected over the years. There will be at least 20 tractors, lorries, steam engines, implements, bygones in the sale and so much more. James Durrant of Clarke & Simpson has been called in to conduct the sale which will be online only in early October.

The latest Euro Auctions sale that was held on Wednesday 2 August lived up to expectations where the tractors were concerned. There was lots of interest as the machines came under the hammer both from those on site near Leeds, and those who were bidding via the internet. As usual, the tractor sale took place on the first of the three-day auction, as the tractors paraded onto the selling ramp, with a mixture of newer and older machines on offer.

This 1997 Valmet 6400 was fitted with a Kelfri twin axle log trailer and 6L70 3 stage grab. In good working order, the whole combination sold for £17,000

In fully condition,restored this 1988 Case International 1492 two-wheel drive Commemorative Edition went on to sell for £6,000

The first machine to go under the hammer was a 1996 Caterpillar Challenger 45 crawler tractor that managed to sell for £15,500 grade 10, while the most expensive in the sale turned out to be a superb 2019 JCB Fastrac 4220 that sold for £62,000 in grade 10 condition also. It wasn’t the only Fastrac in the sale. Also in great condition was another 4220 that dated from 2017, it was fitted with a Quicke Q7M loader and sold for £38,000 grade 10.4 while a 1115 from 1996 made just £8,500 and a 155-64 from 1994 went for £8,000 both in 9.6 condition.

Moving on, and the John Deere name was certainly well represented with a 6155M from 2020 coming out on top price wise when it sold for £60,000. That was followed by a 2018 John Deere 6135M which was fitted with a JD 643R front loader it made £51,000, while also benefiting from being fitted with a Quicke Q4S front loader was a 2018 JD 5100M that was showing 723 hours on the clock, it sold for £46,000. Slightly cheaper was a 6215R from 2016 that made £45,000, while a 2017 JD 6145R managed to

The New Holland name also saw some quality tractors on offer. The most expensive turned out to be a T7.245 from 2019 that went on to sell for £52,000, while a TL7195S from 2019 made £47,500. Then came a couple of NH T6.145s that both caught the eye. The first dated from 2018 and sold for £38,000, a price that was just beaten by a 2017 example that sold for £39,000 although this tractor had the benefit of being fitted with a MX U410 front loader and all these tractors were in grade 10 condition.

There was a variety of Case tractors in the sale, with some newer and older machines on offer. The first was a Maxxum 150 from 2018 that was in great shape it sold for £42,000 grade 11, while not far behind was a 2015 Case Puma 230 CVX that was also in good condition making £37,500.

Also in the mix was some older Case tractors in the sale too, with a couple of restored examples going under the hammer towards the end of the sale. The first was a 1988 Case International 1492 two-wheel drive Commemorative Edition that sold for just £6,000, while from 1993 came a Case 895 Stockman that made £8,500. Both were in

good condition, while another together tractor, namely a Case CF350 two-wheel drive looked to be a cheap lot when it sold for £1,250.

When it came to the Massey Fergusons in the sale, coming out on top was a 7715S from 2018 that was in great condition grade 10.5 and sold for £33,000 while a 2015 MF 5610 that came with a 946 front loader made £27,500 and a 2010 MF 6475 with a 956 loader went for £22,500.

The couple of notable tractors representing the Valtra name were a T154 Versu from 2017 that was in very smart condition sold for £42,500, while somewhat cheaper was a T193 from 2015 for £22,000 grade 10.

Following on from there was a 2017 Kubota M105GX-III that was fitted with a front loader and forks it was also in great condition. That sold for £27,000, while complete with an interesting set of attachments was a 1997 Valmet 6400 that was fitted with a Kelfri twinaxle log trailer and Kelfri 6L70 three-stage grab which went on to sell for £17,000.

As ever, this Euro Auctions’ sale saw everything find a new home, and with just over 60 tractors on offer, it saw a variety of machines go under the hammer, with good prices being achieved all round.
