ever, we respect him so much. It was about the greatest day ever, or if you want to say, the time of our life.∞

.

Leah Jones One day 2 mustaches named Bob & Frank roamed the streets talking to each other. Then some freaky mustache stepped out in from of them. The freaky mustache name was George. George said “This here town ain’t big enough for the three of us!” Frank said “Well then I guess we’ll meet you here at high-noon!” Then all of them walked away. Bob had this partner Frank with him. George stood alone! Finally it was high noon and the towns’ people stood and watched as Frank and Bob pulled out their marshmallow shooters, Frank was hit. But it wasn’t’ bad enough to kill him. Bob stood up and took out the biggest shooter in the west… The Donut Launcher!! Bob shot George so much he wasn’t dead but he was terrified of us! George looked like a donut with icing and for fun sprinkles! George was never seen again. ∞

Time of Our Life Hunter Jones On March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day), the Jr. Dragsters traveled to a local baseball game for mentally and physically disabled kids from ages 9-21. We stayed for about four hours to show the kids our cars, how our cars work, and how much fun it is to race them. But the main reason that we went to the games was to cheer the kids on and watch them play a great game. There was one kid that took heart the cars the Jr. Dragsters. His name was Nick. Nick was nineteen years old and played for the New York Yankees little league baseball team. He was the coolest guy

What’s Easter really about? Research by Leah Jones Easter holiday has both a non-secular and secular meaning. For Christians, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For the majority of Americans, Easter represents candy, candy, and more candy. So, when we get beyond the biblical context of the Easter holiday, what is Easter really about in our free market society? The all mighty dollar. Guess How Much Money is spent on Easter Candy? Easter is the second most important candy-eating occasion of the year for Americans according to the National Confectioner’s Association. According to a survey by BigInsight, which tracks consumer spending, four out of five Americans will celebrate Easter this year, spending a total of $16.8 billion. That's an average of $145.28 each, up 11 percent from 2011. Continued on page 4

What is teen dating violence? Campaign selected by Amber Haifley Teen dating violence is a pattern of controlling behaviors by one teenager over another teenager with whom they are in a dating relationship. That behavior can include physical violence but can also include emotional and/or verbal abuse. Twenty-four percent of 14

1 in 4 teens who have been in a serious relationship say their boyfriend or girlfriend has tried to prevent them from spending time with friends or family; the same number have been pressured to only spend time with their partner.

I think my daughter’s/son's girlfriend/boyfriend is abusing her/him. What can I do? Talk to your teen about dating and healthy relationships. Creating this open dialogue will help with future discussions. Avoid being judgmental. Your teen may not share any information with you if they feel like they have done something wrong. Just listen – Your teen may need to “vent” about what happened. I think my friend is being abused by his/her girlfriend/boyfriend. What should I do?

If you think that a friend is in an unhealthy relationship or is being abused, you may want to talk with them to find out for certain. to 17-year-olds know at least one student who has been the victim of dating violence, yet 81% of parents either believe teen dating violence is not an issue or admit they don't know if it is an issue. The violence can happen over time and one may not even realize the behavior is abusive. 80% of teens say they know someone who has been controlled by a partner, and 60% know someone who has been physically abused. 29% of teens say that they themselves have been physically abused by a dating partner, and 54% report some form of abuse – yet only 37% of parents are aware that their child has been abused in some way.

APRIL 2012

Continued from Page 2 Some 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies, 700 million Marshmallow Peeps, and about 16 billion jelly beans -- enough to circle the earth three times -- will be sold this Easter, according to the National Confectioners Association. That makes Easter the second-biggestselling confectionary holiday after Halloween. According to BigInsight, Americans will spend about $20 per person on candy for Easter, or $2.3 billion total. Candy for thought...

Considering the exorbitant amount of money spent on Easter candy that will lead to a plethora of dental bills, ask your family and friends to put their $20 candy money in a college savings account. If you consider the potential amount of money saved for the future, your excitement alone should suffice as a sweet tooth. ∞ References: http://www.bloomberg.com http://praisephilly.com

Snow Day! Amber Haifley / Rachel Wilhite March 19th-brought rain, sleet, and even snow! Only in Tucson can you go from beautiful mid 70’s weather to mid40’s and snow within one day. Tucson has hot summers and temperate winters. However, Tucson is almost always cooler and wetter than Phoenix because of its higher elevation. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be moderate during summer with a difference that can reach 24 degrees Fahrenheit, and moderate during winter with an average difference of 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Early spring is characterized by gradually rising temperatures and several weeks of vivid wildflower blooms beginning in late February and into March. Daytime average highs range from 72 °F (23 °C) in March to 88 °F (31 °C) in May with average overnight lows in March of 45 °F (7 °C) and in May of 59 °F (15 °C). Imagine the surprise some Tucsonans received when they awoke to cold, wet, snow in March! Tucson may give us dry

hot summers, and a weather surprise once in a while, but we have the best weather in the entire country all-year round.∞

Our Breakfast Club Sierra Haifley Students at Kelly Miller Math are seen almost as The Breakfast Club. We all have our own unique personalities. This applies to how we learn too. Everyone here learns and studies differently. Every child at the institute is full of intelligence and has a thirst for learning. The kids here will be very successful someday, even though some of us are struggling now. We encourage each other to work hard and push towards getting good grades. If any of us is having a rough day, we can share with each other in a safe and open environment. Just like The Breakfast Club, we learn to get along as well as getting good grades. ∞

Who we think we are? Who we think we are is not always how we’re seen. The world chooses to define us in “the simplest terms and most convenient definitions”. However, we all have our own unique personalities. Our uniqueness applies to how we learn too. What we’ve found out is that each one of us is a brain … And a performer … a rule bender … and a team player … an outsider … and a social climber. We are a part of the next generation of whatever we choose to be. The world may choose to define us but we choose to remain exceptional. Sincerely, The Iconoclast Generation.

Two major topics to know when introduced to Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade are the following: 1) what is an archeologist - Archaeologists study artifacts of the near and distant past to develop a picture of how people lived in earlier cultures and societies. 2) The Holy Grail - The Holy Grail is a sacred object figuring in literature and certain Christian traditions, most often identified with the dish, plate, or cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper and is said to possess miraculous powers. When we come to examine the literary tradition concerning the Grail we notice at the outset that the Grail legend is closely connected with that of Perceval as well as that of King Arthur.

A rich merchant had collected many gold coins. He did not want anybody to know about them. One day, his wife asked, "How many gold coins do we have?" After pausing a moment, he replied, "Well! If I divide the coins into two unequal numbers, then 25 times the difference between the two numbers equals the difference between the squares of the two numbers." The wife looked puzzled. Can you help the merchant's wife by finding out how many gold coins they have?
