SPACES DURING THE 'MCO' PERIOD

During the MCO (Movement Control Order) period, isolation became an unavoidable reality for many individuals.

The restrictions on movement and social interactions meant that people were confined to their homes, separated from the outside world.

The group's idea was to create a mobile, light, and safe isolation space for individuals, in creative way.

'Timeless'. Different eras of the world heritage were taken as the design inspiration of the forms.

The design was made to suit to the facial ergonomics of the model.

The form presented solid and void play and overall lightness with the placement of mass and spaceframe.

ECO-RESORT AT SEASIDE / RIVERSIDE VILLAGE: TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE ECO-TOURISM

PROJECT BRIEF

Kampung Mangkuk (beside Terrapuri) is a seaside riverside village which sits on the land flanked by the South China Sea on one side and mangrove river on the other (Setiu Wetland). By day coconut trees sway amidst sea breezes with stunning view of Pulau Perhentian, Lang Tengah, Pulau Cepu, Redang and Bidong islands, shimmer invitingly just offshore in emerald iridescence. By night, fireflies flash about while, in different seasons, ocean-going green turtles and painted terrapins lay their eggs on their respective sandy shores.

Between the South China Sea and the hill forests lies a speckled array of habitats lagoons, marshes, deltas, peat swamps, Melaleuca forests that offer refuge to many plants and animals. The wetlands serve as feeding and roosting ground for seasonal birds and are stopover sites for migratory birds. Marine turtles find their way to the beaches between May to September. Adding to Setiu's ecological value are the presence of endangered Painted and River terrapins that travel down river to nest in the sandy shores of the river mouth and beach fringes.

The challenge is to formulate a series of schemes to rejuvenate a seaside / riverside village into a sustainable tourists spot through sensitive planning with minimum negative impact to the environment, while integrating local industries and heritage conservation with modern day life and progress.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED ECO-RESORT @ KAMPUNG MANGKUK, SETIU, TERENGGANU:

1.To promote value added ecotourism activities that leverage the natural environment, local history and industries.

2.To improve socio-economic condition of the place.

3.To raise public awareness of Malaysian Village heritage and to promote sustainable conservation.

4.To educate the public on the ecological diversity of our natural environment.
