Great story about Bob and Stephanie Carroll and their daughter Baker starting on page 4. Chatham residents since 2003, the Carrolls have immersed themselves in the community in a big way via the Chatham Borough Fire Department, the YMCA, Chatham Fish & Game and through Bob’s men’s sportwear store John Hyatt based in Summit. Did you know that there was a Chatham Golf Club once upon a time? Yup, built in 1898! The clubhouse is a home that still exists today. Check out the article by Liz Holler from the Chatham Historical Society on page 7. Are you getting ready to sell your home? Check out “Less is More” on page 10 written by Vicki & Peter Fife of Turpin Realtors. Vicki & Peter talk about the importance of properly staging your home prior to selling. Making it look HGTV ready for viewing is sure to maximize your sale price. I want to welcome two new Expert Contributors to Chatham Living Liberty Drug in Chatham and Academic Journeys in Millburn. I’m looking forward to seeing their article contributions.

MEET THE CARROLL FAMILY By Stacey McEvoy Photos by Oijoy Photography and courtesy of the Carroll family

very Tuesday and Thursday night, the ground floor of the Chatham Borough firehouse is abuzz with activity. And it’s not with social activity. It’s with kettlebells, TRX training equipment, fire hoses and staircases. The lady leading the way? It’s the Chatham Borough Fire Department’s official trainer Stephanie Carroll. It all began four years ago when Steph, a certified trainer, was asked by a volunteer Chatham Borough firefighter to put together a cardio program for the members. “Firefighters are athletes,” says Steph. “When they’re going into a fire, they’re sprinting, opening up building roofs with pick axes, crawling, carrying heavy items, pushing, pulling and dragging things. In order to do these anaerobic activities, they have to be conditioned—to have mobility, flexibility and strength. If they don’t properly train, they won’t perform as well and they can get injured.” Steph also works on control breathing with the firefighters. She explains that a 30-minute SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) tank could last less than 10 minutes, depending on conditions and circumstances. “With their equipment that could be 60-70lbs in addition to the activity required to fight a fire, the 4 | Chatham Living

tank could run out quickly if their bodies are dehydrated or not properly conditioned,” she says, adding that she feels privileged to serve in this role. “There’s a tremendous sense of community in the firehouse and a feeling of entrenchment in the town. I really feel like I’m part of it all by working with them.” On Fri., Oct. 19, the Chatham Borough Fire Department community is inviting the Chatham community to come out and support them at a Dodgeball Tournament they are hosting from 6:30 to 8:30pm. The firefighters will compete in their gear and “on air” (using SCBA tanks) against local fire departments to raise money for The Burn Center at St. Barnabas at the Annex— which happens to be a favorite Chatham community for Steph too. She’s been working out at the Annex for three and a half years “with a group of very fun and very strong women and men from Chatham and the surrounding area. It’s my happy place,” she says. Steph and her husband Bob moved to Chatham in 2003. Steph from Darien, CT, and Bob from Springfield, NJ, met Memorial Day weekend 2001 “down the shore” at The Parker House in Sea Girt. After marrying, they lived in Summit for a year before settling in the borough. Thirteen years ago, their daughter Baker was born. A Chatham Middle School 8th grader, Baker plays field hockey, is a member of the competitive dance team at Inner Grace and completed her fourth summer at Broadway Bootcamp. She is also a swim team member at Chatham Fish & Game where she completed the Counselor in Training program this past summer. Rounding out the family is a 2-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever Alfred— named after Batman’s butler. Before training firefighters, Steph graduated from The College of William & Mary, earned an MBA at Farleigh Dickinson University and worked in the fragrance and flavor manufacturing industry in sales for 15 years. Her clients included The Procter & Gamble Company, Yankee Candle and Carter-Wallace. After leaving the corporate world, Steph, a health and wellness enthusiast, became certified to teach group exercise and do personal training. “I knew I wanted to help people reach their fitness goals but without injury,” she says. Steph has been teaching exercise classes and doing personal training for clients at The Summit Area YMCA for 10 years. She also does personal training for clients at their homes through her company SLC Training, LLC. Sixteen years ago, Bob opened John Hyatt, a premier men’s sportwear store in Summit. He named the store in honor of his father John Hyatt Carroll, a POW in World War II, who passed September 2018 | 5

RESIDENT FEATURE away in 1997. Prior to opening the business, he worked for 20 years in retail sales, merchandising and marketing at Ralph Lauren, Roots, Timberland and Joseph A. Bank. “We absolutely love this town. We love that we can walk everywhere,” says Steph. “There are weekends that our car never leaves the driveway because we are within walking distance to everything we want to do. We chose our house because we loved that it was across the street from an entrance to Memorial park and the town’s library. We actually negotiated the purchase of our house sitting on one of the park’s benches across the street,” she says with a laugh. The Carroll family enjoys the friendly and small-town community feel of Chatham and have a few favorite spots downtown they visit including Charlie’s Aunt for a great burger and beer, TM Ward Coffee for a delicious cup of brew and the Chatham Sandwich Shop for an excellent sandwich served up by a staff that knows their names. We would like to thank Salerno Duane Inc. in Summit for bringing you this month’s cover story.

TEE-OFF TIME IN CHATHAM

By Liz Holler, Chatham Historical Society

I

n 1895, a new passion was sweeping our nation. The ancient Scottish game of golf captured the hearts and minds of the American people and Chatham was no exception. The same year, The New York Times reported that weekend trains to the suburbs were crowded with passengers “armed with golf bags.” By 1895, fewer than 80 bona fide golf courses had been built. By the turn of the century, there would be close to a thousand courses in play. In 1898, local golfing enthusiasts Russell Hinman, Edward L. Phillips, Charles M. Lum and George Kirkpatrick formed a committee to look at several locations for a gold course in Chatham. They settled for an area of land stretching from the brickyard fields of Lum Avenue to most of Red Road (then called Maple Avenue) and going down Hillside Avenue, reaching almost to the railroad. Keep in mind what is now the ECLC School and Borough Hall were not yet built. Much of Red Road and lower Hillside Avenue had not been developed. The course would be a three-minute walk from the Chatham train station and another very short walk from the Chatham Fish & Game Club. Budgeting for $250, the above mentioned “greens committee” hired August Molitor and his crew of workman to build the six hole golf course. He was instructed to have the course in playing condition by Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1898. Bad weather interfered, and Mr. Molitor could only complete four or five holes by the deadline. Eventually, all six holes were finished, and Mr. Molitor was paid

$132.44. Three more holes were added in the near future. This course consisted of fairways, greens, bunkers, and a water hazard. Jacob Molitor, younger brother of August, was hired as greens keeper. A house still standing today at 65 Fairmount Avenue served as the golf clubhouse. The par for the course was set at 74. Caddy fees were set at 15 cents a round. Chatham Golf Club members were urged not to buy golf balls from the caddies. Back then, golf balls were very scarce and expensive. The late Merritt Budd recalled as a boy caddying for “the big shots” in town on Saturday afternoons. He remembered one stressful afternoon when he was unable to find seven balls teed off by Mr. Ralph Lum. Mr. Lum kept his cool when the first two balls were hopelessly lost in the rough; however, he totally lost it when poor Merritt couldn’t locate the next five balls. One day Edward L. Phillips, governor of the Chatham Golf Club, took a powerful swing at the seventh tee, which is now 78 Hillside Avenue. Much to his shock, the ball landed in a passing car on the Lackawanna freight train and continued on to Hoboken. A railroad employee returned Mr. Phillips’ ball. The Chatham Golf Club proclaimed its first and only forty-mile drive. In its first season, the Chatham Golf Club held several tournaments with out-of-town clubs, including a five-man meeting with the Madison Golf Club and a ten-man match with the East Orange Golf Club.

Three local ladies were admitted to the Chatham Golf Club: Lynda Phillips, Theodora Munn, and Sylvia Swinnerton. Unfortunately, the Chatham Golf Club existed for only five years. In 1902, the new Canoe Brook Country Club in nearby Summit enticed Chatham golfers to greener links.

Proudly serving Chatham and Morris County for over 10 years.

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

LESS IS MORE By Victoria & Peter Fife, Turpin Realtors

O

Don’t take it personally. ver the years we have often been asked for our best advice to a homeowner thinking about getting their home ready for sale. Such a simple question, but the answer, just not that easy.

Aside from the obvious, understanding the current market, pricing correctly and making repairs, the best advice when actually ready to take the plunge and list your house is to detach yourself from the home. The difference between a house and a home is enormous. Once the property goes on the market, it becomes a product. A product that other people (mostly strangers) are looking to buy. The prospective buyer doesn’t really care that your now 25 year old took her first steps in this room, or that your now 28 year old who lives in Denver used to slide down this bannister. As long as said bannister is securely fastened to the wall with no missing spindles, the buyer is good.

“Your home”, that you have loved and that has been part of your life, with all the wonderful memories is now a house for sale. Probably one of many that a prospective buyer will be looking at during their house hunting journey, a product that is often seen for the first time over the internet. There is nothing personal about it to the buyer; only to you, the seller. Taking the “personal” out of the equation is a smart thing to do. So, when an objective party “realtor” comes to your home and tells you that there is too much furniture in a room or your countertops need to be decluttered, please don’t take it personally. We are only trying to take the home out of the house. These suggestions are to help you detach yourself. Taking family pictures off the walls and mantles is a smart way to allow a buyer to envision themselves in the space and allows you to stop thinking so personally about that same space. Neutralizing the house and removing personal objects, absolutely helps the buyer see the house more clearly but works brilliantly for the seller as well. This is one of the reasons that staging has become such an integral part of the real estate process. It not only helps the house flow better, the way a buyer would like to see it, but it also helps an owner detach themselves from the property by introducing objects and furniture that do not belong to them. Even if a stager uses your own furniture, when rearranged, it can become less familiar—creating a house for sale rather than your home for sale. It seems to make the selling of “your home” a little less stressful. And who wouldn’t want that. Never hesitate to reach out to us should you have any questions about anything real estate related. We are more than happy to share our experience as agents and homeowners in Chatham for the last 30 years. 10 | Chatham Living

IS IT TIME TO HIRE A DESIGNER? Contributed by Susan Cohan, APLD susancohangardens.com

D

o you have the nagging feeling that you will just never get your landscape to the point where you absolutely love it? Do you see areas for improvement that you just can’t figure out or do you wish you had a more practical living outdoor space? Maybe you have grand designs for indoor/outdoor living for next year or want to figure out the best place for a vegetable garden. Does your garden have the visual impact you want it to have? If you thought for more than a second about each of these questions, it’s time to consider hiring a landscape designer or landscape architect to help you define and solve your dilemma. Hiring a landscape design professional will save you money and aggravation. Most design professionals aren’t landscapers, rather, they specialize in the design of outdoor spaces much in the same way that an interior designer works inside. Sure, every landscape truck in the area has ‘design’ emblazoned on the side, but that doesn’t mean they have the education or experience to give you your dream yard, so do your homework. Landscape designers are trained to evaluate your property’s strengths and weaknesses, to spot potential problems, and will be versed in the general rules required by your town with regard to the work you want to do. don’t build, ask if they have contractors they can suggest. If you are a DIY client, ask how detailed the plans will be—will you be able to follow them? Your designer should provide you with a scaled plan that includes the details of your project including all materials and measurements. Ask questions about the feasibility of your ideas and if there are restrictions or town ordinances that will place limitations on what you want to do. Fall is the best time to consider hiring a designer for a project to be realized the following spring. If you wait until the first nice day of spring, chances are a good designer will be booked past Memorial Day and your project won’t be built until late summer. Chatham Market Update Brought to you by: The Kate Friday Team Chatham Township has had a strong first 6 months of the year with average Sale Prices up 9% and Days on Market down 37%. So, homes are selling higher and faster than this time last year in Chatham Township. In Chatham Borough sale prices are up 9% (same as the Township) but the number of homes sold in the Borough are down 17% compared to the first half of 2017. A snowy March both delayed and slowed down the Spring Market this year. Chatham Borough's increase in inventory bodes well for buyers going into the fall season.

as well. He served as a member of the Chatham Township Committee from 1889 to 1897, when he was elected tax collector. He held the office for 21 years. He also served on the Board of Education and as a Morris County Freeholder. He was a member of the Chatham Township Democratic County Committee until he retired from it at age 93. Clara married George Ortman, a successful carpenter and farmer, and lived next door to her father. Kate died of pneumonia in 1916, but Mary continued living with her father, even after she married John Cook when she was in her late 40s. The couple had no children. Clara and George had a single child, Ruth. Dayton was a big man and a tough individual. He survived a run in with a street car in Philadelphia and at 88, a vicious attack and robbery at his own farm.

C

Baldwin continued to trade horses into his old age, making trips to the Norristown, PA horse sales to obtain horses. On one trip in 1942 he was run down by some startled horses and fatally injured. He was a week away from his ninety-fifth birthday

hatham Township resident, Dayton Baldwin, lived most of his 95 years on River Road near the Passaic Avenue Bridge. He was born in 1847 to Samuel and Mary Baldwin. The family farmed the land along the river.

As a young man, Dayton opened a livery stable and horse sale barn on the family property. He became a skilled and knowledgeable horseman who trained and doctored his own horses. He earned himself a reputation as an honest trader who procured and sold well-trained, healthy horses. If a horse didn’t prove to be sound, he would take it back or replace it. This was a rare thing in those days. He purchased most of his horses from the Midwest, making more than 50 trips west to find them. The animals were then shipped by railroad to Chatham or Scotch Plains, and then driven as a herd to Baldwin’s stables. In 1871 Dayton married Catherine (Kate) Hill, whose family owned a very large farm in what is now Berkeley Heights. They had three children, Mary, Fred, and Clara. Fred died of pneumonia at age 24. Dayton wasn’t just a good businessman, he was a public servant

Mary and John continued to live in the family homestead and farm the land. The livery barn collapsed in 1948. The house burned in 1982 while owned by Clara’s grandson, Davis Fischer. No evidence of the family farm and business remain.

ADOPT-A-PET By Matt Wildman Photos by Erin Bauers

St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center provides services that support the human-animal bond and seeks to foster an environment in which people respect all living creatures. Learn how you can volunteer, foster, donate, and adopt at sthuberts.org. You can meet and adopt any of the following animals at our Madison Campus, 575 Woodland Avenue.

St. Hubert’s recently completed the largest cat rescue operation in our history - 192 cats rescued from a rural property in Sussex County. One of the original caretakers of the cats passed away within the last few years and the other elderly resident became overburdened and unable to provide care for them. The cats are now residing at St. Hubert’s while they await forever homes. Some will make great in-home pets while others are best suited as barn cats.

Brownie is a quiet six year old cat who is looking for a calm home environment where she can relax in various cushioned cat beds and next to a loving person on the couch. She gets along well with other cats and has shown that she has a wonderful personality underneath her shy exterior. She just needs a person who will give her the time and patience to blossom.

Meet Rosie, a six year old coonhound. She has quite the personality and loves other dogs as long as they are gentle with her. She is an active dog and enjoys long walks, doing agility training, and jumping in wading pools. She also knows lots of commands. If you are looking for a sweet-natured, fun-loving dog to love, Rosie may be the companion for you. 18 | Chatham Living

Chatham Living would like to thank Freshpet for their sponsorship of St. Hubert's Adopt-A-Pet.

Daniel is a cat from this rescue operation who is available for adoption at our Madison shelter. He is approximately two years old and is outgoing and friendly and also quite the charming talker. He gets along with other cats and can’t wait to find peace and quiet in a forever home.

Say hello to Jammy, a loving and exuberant two year old mixed breed who would love nothing more than to be taken on a long walk and then lay next to you on the couch and get a belly rub. She was previously adopted and the family adored her, but she did not get along with the family’s cats. If you are looking for a fun-loving dog to adore and have a home without cats, please visit Jammy who would love to meet you.
