Last fall, the Chatham Township Committee proclaimed the month of October Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month which is near and dear to Christine’s and Sid’s hearts. Shortly after moving to Chatham five years ago, Christine had a stillbirth at 38 weeks. Although a cause was never found, Christine, having had experienced changes in her baby’s fetal movements during the pregnancy, became an advocate for paying attention to how and how often babies move during the last trimester of pregnancy. They share their story on page 6. Thinking about renovating your house? Turn to page 13 and let our Expert Contributor Alan Archuleta of Archuleta Builders give you a blue print of the steps to take and the things to think and learn about. Do you have an annoying minor ache or pain that just does not go away? You might have NEPY Syndrome. “Not Enough Pain Yet” (NEPY) Syndrome, a phrase coined by physical therapists, is a real problem. Our Expert Contributor Matthew Riordan of Professional Physical Therapy pens a piece that will validate your symptoms and offer help. He says that if your symptoms are treated early, you can avoid expensive tests like MRIs, invasive injections, prescription pills and get back to moving confidently and doing the activities that you love. See page 17 for more information. Rooted by an affinity for interior design and a vision for change, our Expert Contributor Dianne Grossman, owner of The Carpet Girl (TCG), opened her 3,000 square foot boutique-styled showroom six years ago with a mission to shift the way female consumers shop for flooring. Flip to page 9 to learn more. For those who have been enjoying our stories about Madame Bey and her family’s contributions to Chatham in the late 1800s and turn of the century, we have a story on page 18 about the fascinating Ms. Bey before her world-famous boxing training camp days, courtesy of the Chatham Township Historical Society. The Chatham Borough Historical Society also has given us a treat with their re-telling of a Chatham historical stand out: In 1926 Chatham led a sesquicentennial celebration of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The highlight of this 9-day celebration was the Three Towns Pageant, an amazing undertaking that reflected the patriotism felt by the residents of Chatham, Madison and Summit. Go back in time on page 12. Happy Mother’s Day to all the lovely ladies of Chatham! We’ll talk again in June, Stacey

RESIDENT FEATURE

MEET THE GUPTA FAMILY By Stacey McEvoy Photos by Christine Loy Photography and courtesy of the Gupta family

F

ive and a half years ago, Christine Chang and her husband Sid Gupta moved from Manhattan to Chatham Township. Sid is no stranger to the area having grown up in Berkeley Heights. Christine grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. The couple met in college. A former figure skater, Christine is a judge with US Figure Skating and often judges the youngest competitors at Mennen Area. Their son, Jackson, 4, attends The Albrook School, a Montessori school in Basking Ridge, and as a typical preschooler, he is a big fan of trains, cars, trucks and the color blue, says his mom. His younger brother Harrison, known as Harry, is 18months old. Although Harry is not talking yet, he makes it very clear that he loves dogs whenever the family goes for a walk through the neighborhood. Christine is a healthcare market researcher for Deloitte. Sid advises pension funds. The couple knew they wanted to raise their family in the suburbs and felt Chatham was the perfect place. Christine quickly became involved in the community and 6 | Chatham Living

joined the Chatham Township Board of Health where she found that it was a great way to connect with people. Movement increases, decreases or changes in quality ie. from a kick to a push, which Christine experienced, should prompt pregnant women to call their obstetricians. “Kick counts are the best way to understand your baby’s normal movement patterns. They’re also a wonderful way to bond with your baby. It can be a fun thing to do and it’s really the only way your baby can communicate with you,” says Christine. “Every mom is different and every pregnancy is different. Be aware of what is normal for your baby. For example, if your baby normally kicks ten times in 10 minutes but then the number goes down to a couple of kicks in 30 minutes, you should call your doctor and ask for a non-stress test and/or ultrasound.”

According to recent research, altered fetal movement could be a sign that the baby needs medical attention, and if addressed in a timely manner, some stillbirths can be prevented.[1]Falling asleep on your side during the last trimester of pregnancy is also better for babies, as it helps blood and oxygen flow through the placenta.[2] Christine and Sid joined two nonprofit organizations to help them through their traumatic loss and to also help others who have experienced the same: • The Star Legacy Foundation is dedicated to stillbirth education, research and awareness and provides support for families who have experienced a loss. Sid is a member Star Legacy Foundation’s Board of Directors and Christine is the medical outreach chair of the Foundation’s NY Metro Chapter. • The Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to meet the healthcare needs of women, infants and children in NJ

RESIDENT FEATURE while coordinating education, outreach and advocacy. Christine is specifically involved with the Partnership’s Fetal Infant Mortality Review program community action team that reviews patterns of fetal and infant mortality in Northern New Jersey and works toward reducing the rate. The couple’s stillborn baby was a girl who they named Madison. Christine explained that the nursing staff encouraged them to hold Madison and take photos with her because in their professional experience, these acts helped bereaved parents in their grieving process. Christine and Sid are grateful that they took the recommendation. The couple later welcomed their two wonderful boys. “Sid and I were both anxious about our subsequent pregnancies. Men are affected by this too and we sometimes forget that, says Christine. “Going to support groups has been so helpful for us. Support groups can be found at Overlook Medical Center, Morristown Medical Center and St. Barnabas Medical Center. Morristown Library also hosts a dad’s support group. And, for those who might not be ready to meet in person, Star Legacy Foundation has online support groups.

How does your in home services work, and do you offer special programs for realtors? Sincerely, Realtor

SHIFTING THE WAY FEMALE CONSUMERS SHOP FOR FLOORING

R

Contributed by Dianne Grossman, owner of The Carpet Girl ooted by an affinity for interior design and a vision for change, Dianne Grossman, owner of The Carpet Girl (TCG), opened her 3,000 square foot boutiquestyled showroom here six years ago with a mission to shift the way female consumers shop for flooring.

“It’s nothing like a box store. It’s clean, clutter-free and is a space people will feel relaxed and comfortable in,” she said. TCG is by appointment only and the location is dictated by the customer. “We can meet in the showroom, at a café or in their home*,” Grossman added. “It removes the element of ‘I need to buy’ and also gives recognition to the working homeowner. Can’t make it to the showroom? I’ll meet with you during your lunch break.” Grossman said she created this sales model to give consumers their money’s worth. “If you’re going to spend a lot of money and make a huge investment, you deserve this kind of attention.” But, she said, her personal touches extend beyond appointments. TCG’s website has a Q&A portal to allow the community to directly ask her flooring questions. Grossman said she welcomes conversations from our clients as well. “We want the questions about what kind of carpet to buy and why? Will the cat destroy it? How can we prevent stains? We want that kind of relationship with our customers,” she said. “ A confused consumer shops, an educated consumer, buys”. She added. Our name The Carpet Girl, feminine nature was chosen with intent, according to Grossman. “The Carpet Girl is a brand — a marketing tool. That brand targets the consumer and draws attention. The brand brings the women to us. It’s important to show that this is a safe and comfortable place for the female consumer.” However, she noted that men are not deterred by the company name. “They know it’s a tagline, and they associate it with our entire team. When you make the process easy for the consumer to find you, call you and meet them for dinner…it becomes a part of the company’s values,” she said. TCG is a full service retailer serving the residential and commercial markets, and carries suppliers such as Mohawk, Shaw, Stanton, Masland, Cresent, Rosecore, Bloomsburg, Nourison and Prestige. The Carpet Girl, www.thecarpetgirl.com/ jane@thecarpetgirl.com

If our service doesn't already WOW you, The Carpet Girl is a community company, we proudly support Mallory's Army, an anti-bullying program located in New Jersey. We believe in the new meaning of "shop small" - giving back to clients and community creates a better experience for everyone. This is our way of helping "love where we live". A PAGEANT LIKE NO OTHER! Contributed by Susan Allen, Chatham Historical Society

S

ome events in Chatham’s history stand out. One such event took place in 1926 when Chatham led a sesquicentennial celebration of the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The highlight of this 9-day (6/28-7/5) celebration, led by Herbert T. Strong, was the Three Towns Pageant. The week would culminate on the banks of the Passaic River with the presentation of the “Valley of the Great Watchung, An Historical Pageant.” The pageant consisted of five “episodes”: Spirit of Occupation of the Valleys; Indian Habitation of the Valleys; Early Settlement; Revolutionary Period; and Arrival of Spirits of Evil, Chased Out by Spirits of Liberty and Peace. The first and last episodes were joint efforts by Chatham, Madison and Summit, while each of the other episodes was assigned to one of the three towns. Land was cleared and stands erected by the Fire Department in the natural amphitheater of the Passaic River. The Chatham Hotel donated dressing rooms and local barns stabled the

livestock, wagons and sleds. Reflective of the towns’ investment in the Pageant, insurance was purchased to protect against bad weather. The Pageant begins with the Great Spirit of the Forest, played by Herbert Dawley, appearing and coaxing the Spirits of the Winds, Woodland, Stream and Flowers out into the glade. The actresses, clad in short and long flowing togas, perform symbolic dances. The Great Spirit announces that Man is coming. Chatham residents, under Strong’s leadership, were in charge of the “Indian Habitation” episode. Chatham residents worked diligently to produce an accurate interpretation of Native American life. Participants consulted the Museum of National History, the Hyde Foundation in NY, and any local history of the Native Americans available. The first man, Chief Sennachus, appears on the far bank of the river and frightens off the Spirits. Native American life

is portrayed with hut building, bow making, rug weaving and hunting. The scene concludes with the Green Corn Dance. During the festival, the first settlers arrive at the river’s edge led by John Day, followed by the Conestoga wagons pulled by oxen and horses. A Native American on horseback sweeps through Day’s Bridge, kidnaps a young woman and gallops off with her as the audience gasps! Soon after another horse and rider hurriedly arrive to announce the battle at Concord Bridge and the “shot fired round the world” ending Episode 3.The Revolution has begun. In the final episode, the Spirits of Evil – War, Famine, Pestilence and Death creep on center stage. As victory is proclaimed, these spirits are pushed away. A chorus of 150 representatives from all three towns in white flowing robes converges on the state singing patriotic songs. The pageant play ends with the chorus and public singing “America”! An estimated 12,000 people attended the event and over 500 residents of the three towns participated in the production. The event was reported throughout the local and regional press, including the New York Herald Tribune. Strong was lauded in the press and called the “source of all wisdom”.Major Herbert M. Dawley, actor, showman, historian, made a film of the Three Towns Pageant. This film can be found in the archives of the Chatham Historical Society.

THINKING ABOUT RENOVATING YOUR HOUSE? Contributed by Alan Archuleta, Archuleta Builders

S

o, you’re thinking about renovating your house. You want it to be a relatively painless process and be happy with the outcome when all the dust has settled. But where do you begin? The first step is to get educated and start planning.

Ask yourself some questions. Why are you doing a renovation? What are you trying to achieve? What are your priorities? Put all the scenarios on the table. Would more space allow for better living? Would reconfigured rooms solve your issue? Would knocking down walls do the trick? Next, set a budget. Factor in the possibility that you might want to move out of your house to a rental accommodation. With an idea of what you’re looking to get out of this monumental undertaking and a dollar figure that you’re comfortable with, interview some architectural firms to understand what services they offer and if they can design the dream you can afford. Hiring a local architect firm is beneficial because the firm would know the feel of your neighborhood and the feasibility of your project as well as be familiar with your municipality’s zoning laws and permit/inspection processes.

Archuleta Builders offers Custom Homes including Additions, Renovations & Remodels. Specializing in Kitchens, Bathrooms & Basements. Our mission is to create that perfect space you can call home.

Once you’ve hired an architect and agreed on the plans created, he or she will then recommend two or three qualified contractors in the area that fit your style, goals and budget. There shouldn’t be a big differential in contractors’ bids. Materials cost what they cost and most local contractors use the same sub-contractors. But don’t make your choice on the price tag alone. Your contractor will drive the project so make sure you feel a level of trust and comfortableness with him or her. You’ll be spending many months working together. Finding the right contactor is key to the quality and success of your renovation project. Shopping. That’s part of the planning. At a pre-construction meeting, the contractor and the homeowner will each get a checklist of items to purchase while waiting for permits to begin the project. In the age of the internet so many choices are available that people get overwhelmed, change their minds halfway through and then might have to wait extended periods of time for delivery which could hold up the renovation schedule. Try hard to be decisive. Choose early, get it ordered and let the product sit in your garage if necessary—it will be on hand when your contractor is ready to install which will keep the schedule on time. Renovation projects can be stressful—but taking time at the beginning stages to educate yourself on the process and thoughtfully plan will provide a clear vision, set expectations and help avoid headaches and heartaches. Lastly, focus on the big picture: You’ll have your dream home.

YOU MIGHT HAVE NEPY SYNDROME. HOW CAN YOU STOP IT?

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

Contributed by Matthew Riordan, Professional Physical Therapy & Training

N

EPY Syndrome is very common. If you are a man or woman 40 years or older, chances are, you have it. Here is the epidemiology and possible symptoms you may be experiencing if you have NEPY Syndrome:

case of NEPY; ie pain meds, invasive injections, expensive tests or even surgery.

• It may begin with a subtle, non-urgent ache or pain that is usually disregarded as soreness from household chores, yard work or an ache that appeared after a recent run, gym workout, tennis match or golf outing.

• Fear and confusion of where to turn to for help, so you end up not going to anyone and suffering longer.

• Symptoms often appear first in the low back, knee or shoulder but can spread elsewhere and last greater than three weeks. Sometimes symptoms can go undiagnosed for years.

Although not yet recognized by the AMA, “Not Enough Pain Yet” (NEPY) Syndrome, a phrase coined by physical therapists, is a real problem. We all have annoying minor aches or pains that just does not go away. Despite things like hoping it will go away on its own, trying to work through it or consulting with “Dr. Google,” it persists at a low annoyance type level. Likely within a few weeks you’ve compensated for this annoyance. You believe the problem is gone, but even the simple thought of the pain acting up againslows you down or even stops you from keeping up with your workouts, swinging harder on the tennis court or fairway or running as fast as before. You may even begin to pass on those activities entirely. Before you know it, you’ve lost your fitness and sport confidence, aging seems to speed up and now your pain is even worse than it was before. You feel like giving up.

• Often accompanied by being too busy and not making your health a priority. • Unsubstantiated fear of what the treatments might be for your

Located within the Madison & Summit YMCA

• You believe or have been told that, “it’s just your age and to get used to it”.

If treated early, you can stop NEPY Syndrome in its tracks and avoid expensive tests like MRIs, invasive injections, prescription pain or even anti-inflammatory pills with many potential side effects. You can get back to moving confidently and doing the activities that you love. If you ignore your symptoms just because there is Not Enough Pain Yet, there are often many more layers of poor compensatory movement habits and changes in the soft tissue and muscular imbalances which will occur over time that will need to be worked through. Similarly, the small leak in the foundation or roof of your home that slowly persists creates lots of damage over time. If it were detected and addressed at the start, you could have saved lots of frustration, time and money.

MADAME BEY BEFORE HER WORLD-FAMOUS TRAINING CAMP Contributed by Patricia Wells, Chatham Township Historical Society

I

n 1923, Madam Hranoush Bey established Bey’s Training Camp for professional boxers at her farm on River Road, Chatham Township. For a woman to run such a facility was unusual for its time. But Madame Bey was unusual.

Madame Bey: Hranoush Bey in circa 1895 (Courtesy of Chatham Township Historical Society

She had been born in Turkey to Armenian Christian parents, an unpopular minority in Turkey. She was educated at the American College for Girls in Constantinople where she learned multiple languages and became friends with girls from many cultures and countries. She also studied opera, developing a mezzo-soprano voice with coloratura talent. She would later give concerts in Carnegie Hall and be offered a place in the Metropolitan Opera. Her husband forbade her to accept the job, a move that would later assure her dedication to a training camp. Sidky Bey was a Turkish diplomat in the early 1900s when he fell in love with Hranoush. Because he was a Turkish Muslim, they could not marry in their native country. Sidky got a posting at the Turkish Legate in Washington, D.C., and he, his fiancé, and her mother left for the U.S. The couple were married and lived in the embassy. Hranoush became a popular socialite, enjoying time with President McKinley and his wife. She was standing next to the couple when McKinley was assassinated. When WWI commenced, Turkey reassigned Bey to Germany, but he refused to go and left the service. He and a partner, Ehsan Karadaghli, started a Turkish rug business. They did well until a large shipment of their rugs was confiscated by the Russian Navy while being shipped to the U.S. Now bankrupt, Ehsan and the Beys retreated to the farm they had already purchased in Chatham Township. There they farmed with moderate success, until the fateful day Freddie Welsh asked Madam Bey to manage his Health Farm while he was away in the army. Sidky didn’t like it, but this Hranoush would not be denied. Her skill with languages, her experience with bigotry, and her diplomacy gave her the mentality she needed to be generous to her clients and successful in her business. The boxers and

managers loved and respected her. The rest is history. Want to know more? Check out “Madame Bey’s: Home to Boxing Legends” by New Providence author Gene Pantalone. It’s in the library and can be purchased online. The Red Brick Schoolhouse Museum, at 24 Southern Blvd, has information and photos of the local boxing camps. GREG SMITH PUBLISHES "MISCHIEVOUS IN MENDHAM"

C

hatham author Greg Smith wrote his first book in 2018, “Mischievous in Mendham,” an anthology of comic memoirs on the author’s childhood in Mendham. Using small and ordinary situations he ramps up hysterically humorous motifs ranging from his one day as a Catholic to ghostbusting in a barn. In the vein of Garrison Keillor, he sheds light on the fact that these incidents are not unique to his hometown but are a microcosm of the American comedy in general. A profound and universal anthology written with wit, warmth, and nostalgia of times long past relatable to all adults who fondly remember their youth. Mischievous in Mendham is sold on www.amazon.com.
