Our feature family is the Semioli family. Jen and Mark are familiar faces in the community—most especially to children in Chatham and surrounding towns—as basketball and soccer coaches. Jen played basketball for Duke University and Mark played professional soccer for the LA Galaxy and New York/New Jersey Metro Stars, now known as The New York Red Bulls. Meet the couple and their two children Mia and Milo on page 6. Our Expert Contributor Matthew Riordan of Professional Physical Therapy & Training shares some insight on the differences between fitness workouts and real activities such as gardening, playing a full 18 holes of golf, six sets of tennis or even keeping up with coaching the kids' sports in "Spring Has Sprung and So Have Your Sprains and Strains" on page 13. The Chatham Historical Society tells us all about the grocery stores that used to dot Main Street in "Groceries on Main" on page 9 and the Chatham Township Historical Society continues the story of Madame Bey in "Bey’s Training Camp: A Lady & Her Boxers" on page 19. On page 16, we have a fun "10 Questions" piece with Nancy Renzulli who is a school crossing guard at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and Kings Road. Rain or shine, Nancy crosses Chatham children to get them to school safely-always with a smile and her signature wave to EVERYONE that passes by her post. Happy Father's Day to all the dads and grandfathers in Chatham! Stacey

MEET THE SEMIOLI FAMILY By Stacey McEvoy Photos courtesy of the Semioli family

J

en and Mark Semioli are familiar faces in the community— most especially to children in Chatham and surrounding towns—as basketball and soccer coaches. Jen played basketball for Duke University and Mark played professional soccer for the LA Galaxy and the New York/New Jersey Metro Stars, now known as The New York Red Bulls. After spending a year after graduation playing basketball in Sweden followed by two years as an assistant basketball coach at Princeton University, Jen became a teacher in New York City. Before going pro, Mark played soccer for Stanford University. Having a bit of fun during the conversation, the couple note that each was recruited by the other’s alma mater! Mark also played professionally in the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles. While on the West Coast, he found time to earn a law degree from Santa Clara Law School. The couple married in 2004 during July 4th weekend in Saratoga Springs. Jen,

from Ballston Lake, NY, and Mark, from Hauppauge, NY, met through a mutual friend who was a good friend of Jen’s from high school and was a roommate of Mark’s when the men were playing professional soccer. While living in New York City, Jen and Mark started their family. Mia is now 12 and Milo, who was named after his parents’ matchmaker, is now 9. After retiring from soccer, Mark enrolled at Mercy College School of Education in the Master Teacher Fellows program in New York and taught for five years in Scarsdale and New York City. The couple moved their family to Chatham six years ago. Mark has been a middle school

history teacher at Kent Place School in Summit for the past 9 years and is the History Department Chair. Jen is in her sixth year teaching physical education and health at Far Brook School in Short Hills. A travel coach for the Chatham Basketball Club for three years, most recently as a 6th grade coach for Mia’s team, Jen says her coaching experience with the Club has been one of the most rewarding. “There are so many great athletes in this grade,” says Jen. “They are hard-working, nice kids. I knew when I was coaching them in 4th grade that something special was going on. The girls allow me to coach them like

athletes. I don’t have to manage. I just coach,” she says, noting how wellmannered the girls are. “They line up to thank me after practices and games! Any success they’ve had is really well deserved,” says Jen, who also offers basketball clinics in town and has coached Madison Area YMCA Y Winners basketball teams. Chatham Middle School 6th grader Mia also plays soccer for Chatham United, travel basketball for Corpus Christi Church, rec lacrosse

for the Chatham Lacrosse Club and Chatham rec Cross Country. Mark is a boys’ soccer coach with the Madison Area YMCA’s Travel Soccer program for U9 and U10 teams for the past three years. Milton Avenue School 3rd grader Milo plays on a Y team and also participates in Chatham recreation flag football, baseball, basketball, lacrosse and wrestling. Mark appreciates that Milo can have fun and experience so many different sports because of all

the parent volunteers who help make the opportunities happen in the town’s rec program. Mark has also helped coach Chatham rec soccer teams and served as an assistant coach with rec baseball. The Semiolis try to keep a balanced perspective when it comes to sports. “It’s important to not get caught up,” says Jen, pointing out that the kids play for local teams. The couple say they believe the same as their parents did: You can get all the experience you need close to home. “It’s practicing on your own all the time—that’s how you get better,” says Jen, referencing an anecdote from her father who was the men’s basketball coach at Union College in New York. “He told me that he could give me advice, but he couldn’t practice for me. You get better by playing more.’” Jen added, “I wanted to play all the time and that’s what I did--even in my spare time.” “Sports taught us discipline and about gratitude,” says Jen. “We’ve gone all over the world playing and it opened a lot of doors, but the best part about the experiences were the relationships.” Mark still gets together with friends from high school, college and his pro days. Jen still gets together with Duke teammates. “It’s more about the friendships and relationships that you make,” she says. Some of the family’s closest Chatham friends are from their early days in town when they enrolled their kids at their church’s preschool at Chatham United Methodist Church. “It’s been a great community to part of,” says Jen, noting the family’s involvement with the church.

RESIDENT FEATURE Mia and Milo play the bells and chimes with the Youth Ringers and have attended Vacation Bible Camp during the summer. “Chatham is a really tight community. It’s been a really good fit for us, says Jen, noting that their neighbors were welcoming the minute they moved in. “Friends become part of your family in Chatham, she says. Semioli family favorites in town are the Library of The Chathams, Gregorio’s, Arminio’s, Yo Lotta Luv, The River Grille and Charley’s Aunt—the place where they made the decision to buy their house and call Chatham home. Plans for the summer? “Maybe the kids might participate in a few local sports camps, but we are going to keep the summer open for lots of family time. Not just sports, but traveling and relaxing, says Jen, adding that they plan on spending plenty of quality time on a lake in Charlottesville, VA, where her parents live. GROCERIES ON MAIN

P

Contributed by Liz Holler, Chatham Historical Society icture late afternoon in the 1960s, when the sidewalks of Chatham Main Street were alive with homemakers shopping for last minute items and bargains for the perfect dinner. During that decade, Chatham’s downtown had a number of smaller food stores. The Good Deal and the Acme on the western side of Main Street were going full steam. However, there were smaller, colorful markets with their own following. Falls & Cahalan, Inc., a small butcher store, began business in July 1965 at 231 Main Street. Leo Cahalan was a quiet but very friendly and helpful storekeeper. Pictures of clipper ships adorned the walls of his store. At times, Mr. Cahalan would employ high school boys to help at the counter. “Mr. Cahalan’s meats were simply delicious, of excellent quality,” recalled former Mayor Nelson Vaughan. Another butcher store was the Cedar Post Market at 255 Main Street. Two brothers, Herb and Al Wetter, ran the Cedar Post, which opened in 1955. This meat store had its origins in Madison, New Jersey. An actual cedar post, to hitch up the horses, had been installed near the earlier Madison butcher store. Originally focusing on retail trade, the

Chatham Cedar Post Market branched into wholesale trade in the late 1960s on into the 1970s. One early December morning in 1965, Herb Wetter and his assistant, Mike, were alone in the store, preparing for a hectic day of holiday shoppers. A silent customer entered from the store’s rear door. Glancing up, Mr. Wetter observed a tall, dark, mustached man placing a six-inch barrel revolver on the counter with an empty bag. Following the man’s instructions, Mr. Wetter emptied the contents of his cash register into the bag, totaling $1,364.06 as well as a package of cold cuts, chicken, and pork chops. He ordered Mr. Wetter and his assistant to stay in the store’s walk-in cooler for three minutes or else they would be shot. As a final blow, the intruder helped himself to a loaf of fruitcake before leaving. After waiting the allotted time in the cooler, Mr. Wetter and Mike ran out of the store and flagged down Patrolman Bill Waller. Unfortunately, the thief made a wellplanned escape. The money, the meat, and the fruitcake were never recovered. Some Chathamites remember the A&P at 275 Main Street. The A&P’s double front doors still exist. The store maintained an

old country store atmosphere with worn, wooden floors, ceiling fans, and a large coffee grinder at the checkout counter. Dating from the 1920s, the A&P closed in the mid-1970s. Wearing the official A&P aprons, employees would stock the canned goods, replenish fresh produce, and stack liquor bottles. There was no telephone in the store. The phone at the store next door had to be used. There were other fine food stores during that decade: The Food Manor Market at 434 Main Street, the Chatham Delicatessen at 253 Main Street, and The Chatham Bake Shop at 234 Main Street. All these stores are gone but not forgotten.

dream home. The first floor is the place we always hang out but now that it’s time to redesign the rooms, I‘m having a hard time making one large space two defined rooms. The kitchen is tile and the family room has one step down to all carpet. I’d like to be up-to-date with the latest trends but still stay classic. Everyone tells us to put down all wood, but I think it’s too cold and formal. We have a tendency to buy things that are safe and neutral so how do we decide what’s best for our home today, thinking about future design styles? We want a real change and statement, so what are your top suggestions? Sincerely, Open Floor

Dear Open Floor, Paint! Let’s start with my favorite question, what’s your favorite color? Blue? Green? No one ever says brown or gray, yet, that is the color found in most homes. Neutrals come in many shades, for example a very faint blue paint color can be a beautiful choice for the kitchen, and, just a shade deeper for the family room. The first way to define an open space is to surround yourself in colors you love. Next, let’s think outside the “flooring box” instead of installing wall to wall wood in two rooms. How about installing wood planks on the wall in the family room; it’s a great way to bring in the wood but puts a new spin on an accent wall. Using wall to wall carpet with a bold pattern and soft fiber makes a statement in the family room as a cozy place for everyone to enjoy. Now that you’ve chosen wall to wall carpet, this avoids an area rug investment later on. Lastly, the kitchen let’s keep the tile floor and install a new floor right over it, if possible. I personally love the idea of a cork floor. This design will install over what you have, therefore lowering the investment and minimizing the time under construction. The easy click design will definitely allow the kitchen to stand alone with a hot, new unique product available in many colors and styles. These three simple changes can make a big difference in the home; using paint and flooring to redesign and revive an open space to two spaces. One open floor is now two stylish, unique rooms. MELINA PANAGAKOS TO EARN GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD WITH PROJECT: CHATHAM STOP THE BLEED By Chatham Living

M

elina Panagakos, a Chatham High School 11th grader, is earning her Girl Scout Gold Award with Chatham Stop the Bleed, a project that is designed to teach, empower and provide tools for an emergency situation which requires bleeding control. Bleeding Control is the actions taken to control bleeding from someone who has suffered a traumatic injury. By the use of tourniquets, gauze, bandages, direct pressure etc., bleeding is able to be lessened, if not stopped, to better the chances of survival. To carry out her project, Melina, along with her project advisor, Tim Brown, a local EMT and flight nurse, held training classes with the community as well as teachers and staff at Lafayette Avenue School, Chatham Middle School and Chatham High School. She hopes to hold trainings at the district's elementary schools. Classes included hands on practice with tourniquets and wound packing. Attendees received bleeding certification upon completion.

"I chose this community issue because of the rise of school shootings in this country, I thought something should be done," said Melina. "Legislation for gun control has been pushed for, but it is a lengthy process and has been met by resistance. Instead of waiting for legislation, I thought that bringing bleeding control awareness to the community would help in giving people the ability to react and save a life if an emergency situation ever came up. If teachers, students, and community members can go into the world feeling able and ready to handle a traumatic bleeding situation they can save lives in multiple different scenarios which is a meaningful and important asset to have."

Stop the Bleed

• The genesis of Stop the Bleed dates to 2013, following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. The idea was to expand beyond first responders the number of people who know what to do when faced with people who have traumatic bleeding injuries that could result from any kind of accident such as: car accidents, injuries at home, while at work, on a playground, at a gym, etc. • Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, it's a national awareness campaign and call-toaction. Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. • A person can bleed to death in less than five minutes, which makes it difficult for emergency medical responders to arrive fast enough to control bleeding and save lives.

Melina's goal is to provide each school in the district with bleeding control kits that would be placed by the AEDs, offices, gyms and any other place the principals would like to have the kits. Each kit includes a tourniquet, gauze, trauma dressing, gloves, sharpie and an instruction card. She is raising money through donations from a Go Fund Me campaign, with all donations going toward the purchase of kits. The kits range from $45 for the kit to $115 for the kit with a wall mounted box. Girl Scout Gold Award projects, which must focus on a community issue, requires a minimum of 80 hours and must have a sustainability element. Melina began researching, training, and working on the project last summer and hopes to complete it by the end of the school year or summer, if more time or training is needed or requested.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG AND SO HAVE YOUR SPRAINS AND STRAINS

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

Contributed by Matthew Riordan, Professional Physical Therapy & Training

Y

ou might be like me and may have spent the seemingly long months of short winter days awaiting the time to get outdoors again to run, play, work in the yard and just feel good moving your body. Well the longer warmer days of spring are officially here. It comes along with a sense of new possibilities and ambition to resume outdoor activities where you had left off in the fall. Although, the buds on the branches come out much faster than we can shake off the stiffness in our joints and muscles. Of course, you have been working out in the gym all Winter, right? Well even if you have, there are many differences between fitness workouts and real activities such as gardening, playing a full 18 holes of golf, six sets of tennis or even keeping up with coaching the kids' sports. One of those differences is that in the gym we often follow a regiment based on reps, sets and intensity that is steadily and progressively built up over time. If you stopped your fitness workout in November and then tried to resume them again at the same intensity in May, you would be setting yourself up for injury. Although this sounds like common sense, your body in a pursuit to resume the enjoyment of participating in outdoor activities, moving and playing again, overrides the brain and keeps pushing for more and more. In some scenarios, the brain is complicit with this as it pushes the body too and ignores what the body is telling you. For example, trying to complete a chore in the yard before the days end even when you’re beyond fatigued, you just want to get it done. Another common example might be your surprise that the nagging pain from last fall which went away with some rest over the winter is suddenly back again after your first mile of running or having a catch with your kids. You rationalize that you can work through it and carry on. Unfortunately, this speeds the process right into an injury that is now persistent all through the summer. It’s very common. Even with my years of experience helping patients recover from such ailments, I too have fallen into this trap. I awake early on a beautiful June Saturday morning feeling like I can conquer all only to end up with pain on Sunday night having to pay for it over time. Luckily for me, I’m surrounded by an expert team of physical therapists who can help me undo this and recover from my weekend warrior miscues or over ambition with household DIY projects. These great physical therapists can quickly identify what I might have done to myself and quickly get back on track, so I don’t miss out on any more of those great spring and summer days with the family, team or just enjoying some work out in the yard.

If you too have found that the nagging pain from November is back again or, it’s Sunday night and you realize you’ve over done it on this weekend, don’t just try to work through it or just wait it out and rest. That approach will guarantee more time lost. You too can have access to our expert care to get you moving again and not miss the fun of Summer. At Professional Physical Therapy & Training, conveniently located within the Madison YMCA, we offer no obligation assessments which can help you understand your injury and get you back on track. You can also access our e-books about some common injuries and treatments by going to our website www. professionalptandtraining.com/e-books. given to towns where “mayors have made healthy lifestyles a top priority and are actively engaging all the members of their community,” according to the MWC. The six categories considered when selecting healthy towns are: • Defining Health Broadly – addressing the social and economic factors that impact health outcomes. • Measurement and Data Sharing – identifying measurable health indicators and establishing shared goals with partners.

I

t’s no secret that the Chathams are rooted in community – engaging residents and business owners through all types of activities. Whether it’s fostering hometown pride with the annual Spring Clean, instituting a rideshare program for the Senior Center or supporting the towns’ volunteer firemen and emergency responders with various fundraisers, both Chatham Borough and Chatham Township are dedicated to the health and happiness of its residents, employees and business owners. So much so in fact, that Chatham’s governing bodies and volunteer groups are winning awards for their efforts. This past year, Chatham Borough and Chatham Township were jointly recognized by the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute’s Mayor’s Wellness Campaign (MWC) as a “Top Healthy Town” in New Jersey. The Chathams were one of eight municipalities in the state to earn this honor; the others included Bergenfield, Morristown, Montclair, Plainfield, Princeton, Stone Harbor and Westwood. The distinction is

• Health Equity – reducing, and ultimately eliminating, health disparities by focusing programming on those most affected by poor health outcomes. • Procurement of Resources – harnessing the collective power of MWC committee members and local business partners to efficiently align resources that maximize community health. • Collaboration – building partnerships across sectors. • Commitment to Sustainability – developing programs that are designed to last. In 2018, both Chatham Borough and Chatham Township led MWC committee efforts to improve the health of residents. Identifying mental health stigmas as a top concern for the community, Chatham implemented the following programs: • STAY– An adult education program on suicide prevention offered through the library that provides parents and caregivers with information on how to help loved ones cope with crisis situations.

10 QUESTIONS WITH. . . . NANCY RENZULLI By Chatham Living

T

his month, our "10 Questions" feature is with Nancy Renzulli who is a school crossing guard at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and Kings Road. A Berkeley Heights resident, Nancy is very much a part of the Chatham community, having worked for the Borough of Chatham for 33 years and counting! Her children also graduated from St. Patrick School. Rain or shine, Nancy crosses Chatham children to get them to school safely--always with a smile, her signature wave and looking festive during the holidays--whether wearing a turkey hat or reindeer antlers with jingle bells and lights. Nancy summed it up simply: "I love Chatham and for me it's like family." It's clear that you love your job as a school crossing guard. What is your favorite part about being a crossing guard in Chatham? My favorite part of my job is the people. I enjoy wishing all to have a great day. I also like waving to all the cars. For me, it's like family. I hope a smile, kind words, and a wave make for a better day. You wave to EVERYONE who passes you on the corner of Lafayette Avenue and Kings Road. How did that start? Some years back a few children were sad and asked me why I didn't wave to them after school. I missed them due to the fact they were in their grandparents' cars. I didn't know the car and felt bad. From that point on I waved to everyone that drove by. If you could have one super power, what would it be?

I would love to be like Iron Man and be powerful, flying through the skies. Iron Man may not have true super powers but I think it's cool that he has the intelligence to construct everything he needs to protect all. What are your hobbies? I don't know if they are true hobbies but I enjoy volunteering. I volunteer at the National 9/11 Museum, One World Trade NYC. There, I assist visitors while always honoring the lost souls of the day. I also volunteer with Newark Fire Department Bell and Siren Club. There, I serve nutritious food and drink to firefighters over a second alarm. I have also been on several award winning grant teams aiding fire departments to be safe. Are you a dog person or a cat person? Both - I have two dogs and two cats that I love.

Chatham school crossing guard Nancy Renzulli pictured on Crossing Guard Day 2018.

(Luciano Pavarotti), "New York, NY" (Frank Sinatra), "Hero" (Luciano Pavarotti & Mariah Carey) "Innocent Man" (Billy Joel) "Believer" (Imagine Dragons) "Walk Like a Man" (Four Seasons) "Meant to Be" (Florida Georgia Line) "Heaven" (Kane Brown) and "That's Amore" (Dean Martin). With those songs I could do anything. If you could have coffee with one famous person, alive or dead, who would it be? The one person I would have coffee is President George Washington. I would ask him about during the worst days of the Revolutionary War, how did he have faith, not second guess himself or give up, and have the fortitude to lead the Colonial forces to victory. What talent do you wish you had? I wish I had the talent to be a famous photographer. What was your favorite subject in school?

If you were shipped to a deserted island for six months, what album would you bring?

My favorite subject in school was English. I love to read.

Instead of one album I would bring my current playlist of: "Uncle John's Band" (Grateful Dead), "My Sweet Lord" (George Harrison) "Let it Be" (Beatles) "Brandy" (Looking Glass) "My Hero" (Foo Fighters) "Learn to Fly" (Foo Fighters) "'O Sole Mio"

The most interesting place I visited was Italy. I went there with my mom, dad and grandmother. My dad showed us where he was stationed in Italy during World War II. That, to me, was cool.

BEY’S TRAINING CAMP: A LADY & HER BOXERS

I

Contributed by Patricia Wells, Chatham Township Historical Society n 1923, Madam Hranoush Bey was managing HeavyWeight World Champion boxer Freddie Welsh’s Health Farm on Fairmount Avenue while Welsh was away in the army. She was achieving the success that had eluded him by concentrating on boxers rather than rich businessmen. She quickly established her reputation. She provided the boxers, their trainers and support staff with facilities, good food, a schedule, and a few simple rules: no alcohol, no swearing, no women, stick to the schedule, and show respect. She never interfered with the training but was always available after dinner to listen and advise. She became a mother figure to many of the tough young men. When Welsh asked Bey to vacate the Health Farm following a disagreement, all the boxers went with her to her farm one mile down River Road. Because she was short on money, boxer Johnny Wilson, pitched in and bought the supplies needed to convert the garage to a gym and build housing for the men. Then the boxers and their staff built what was needed. Bey’s Training Camp was born with the boxers themselves as midwives. The people of Chatham Township enjoyed having the camp in town. Boxers jogged daily on the local roads. One was known

for hitching a ride on the morning school bus to avoid the steep climb up the south end of Fairmount Avenue. An outdoor sparring ring gave locals a chance to see great boxers training for a small admission fee. Young boys were allowed to sneak in for free. World champion fighters including Gene Tunney, Sugar Ray Robinson, Floyd Patterson, and Max Schmeling trained at Bey’s. Madame Bey was particularly fond of Tunney, “her polished emerald” and Schmeling, from whom she learned German, her sixth language. She helped fund his early career in the US. Bey told reporters all her boys were gentleman and she enjoyed their company. She admired their prowess but could never stand to watch them in a professional fight. It was too brutal, and she cared for them too much.

Madame Bey ran her camp until her death of heart failure in January 1942. She was buried next to her husband in Fairmount Cemetery. A headstone was never placed on the grave. The Chatham Township Historical Society is now raising funds to provide a headstone for this remarkable woman.
