You're in your second month of keeping your New Year's resolution to exercise more. You're seeing great results but then you start to notice some aches and pains. You're trying to ignore them--which is a bad idea. On page 13, our physical therapy expert contributor Matthew Riordan of Professional Physical Therapy writes a smart article "Can Your Motivation Work Against Your Health Goals?" Matthew and his team are here to help you work through your aches and keep your workout goals on track. With the passage of the government’s new spending bill in December came several changes that will increase many Americans’ ability to save money for retirement. The SECURE (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement) Act that went into effect January 1, 2020 has many provisions designed to boost retirement savings and expand the ranks of those who can contribute to IRAs and 401(k) plans. Brian McGeough of Chatham Wealth Management, our wealth management expert contributor, educates our readers on page 16. Early experiences are crucial to a child’s development and school readiness. Parent partnerships with children's teachers are important. Kare Matrisciano, the new director of the F.M. Kirby Children's Center of the Madison Area YMCA, shares what parents need to know about making good choices for their children's early development in their infant and young child years. On page 19, Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj, our cosmetic non-invasive and invasive skin procedures expert contributor, writes about the non-surgical nose job. He points out that it's quick, highly tolerable, and has little to no downtime. It's less expensive than the traditional rhinoplasty, so it’s easy to see why this alternative nose job is quickly trending. Dr. Slupchynskyj explains the procedure and discusses the difference between non-surgical rhinoplasty and traditional surgical rhinoplasty. Lastly, on page 18, St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center has some love bugs that want to cuddle in a forever home by the end of this month of love. Happy Valentine's Day! Stacey and John

MADISON CHATHAM COALITION: MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITIES By Stacey McEvoy Photos by Christine Loy Photography and courtesy of the Madison Chatham Coalition

S

ubstance use is a challenging topic to discuss with teens--but there’s an organization in our community that’s helping prevent and reduce youth substance use, and helping parents and their teens open the channels of communication: The Madison Chatham Coalition (MCC). More than two years ago, through the DrugFree Communities (DFC) Support Program, the Office of National Drug Control Policy Office awarded a $125,000 federal grant to the Madison Chatham Coalition (MCC) to prevent youth substance use in Madison and the Chathams. The grant spans five years and supports the administration’s efforts to emphasize prevention among youth—the MCC focuses specifically on marijuana and alcohol use among 12-17 year olds. Through collaboration, education and community-wide change, MCC members hope to assist young people into becoming empowered, educated youth that are confident to make and keep healthy lifestyle choices. “Morris County and New Jersey as a whole have a number of amazing recovery

resources,” says Madison Chatham Coalition Coordinator Allison Bardon who has been at the helm since its federal funding beginnings. “The Coalition aims to prevent teens from ever needing these services.” In addition to the federal funding, the MCC also must provide a dollar-for-dollar match from non-federal sources equaling the total grant amount, which comes from volunteers’ hours, office space that the Madison Area YMCA donates, and more. The MCC has 12 sectors that include parents, police departments, therapists, school counselors, youth-serving organizations, local/state government leaders, civic volunteers, business owners, the media, health care professionals and religious/fraternal organizations. A handful of local teens are engaged through the Coalition’s Teen Task Force. “The community support and the members of our sectors have been incredible,” says Allison. “Everyone comes together and works hard on preventive measures for the betterment of the teens in our community. We have truly dedicated and impassioned people working on this initiative.” The MCC partners with Municipal Alliance Committee of the Chathams (MACC), Madison Alliance Addressing Substance Use (MAASA) and Project Community Pride

of the Madison Area YMCA. The Madison Area YMCA is a community partner and the fiscal agent of the MCC, as the work of the MCC directly correlates with the Y’s work in youth development and social responsibility. The Coalition partners with groups such as the Thursday Morning Club and High Focus Centers and continues to engage additional groups with missions aligned to the MCC’s. “The Madison Chatham Coalition is datadriven,” says Allison, noting that the DFC grant requires the gathering of four core measures through surveys that are given in the districts’ schools and at community events. The measures include: 30-day past use, perception of risk, perception of peer disapproval and perception of parent disapproval of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and prescription drugs. Quantitative and qualitative data from key informant and focus group interviews measure short-term/ long-term goals and provides context and priorities for programs. Putting a new twist on this year’s annual Night of Conversation program, the MCC produced a prevention podcast www. madisonareaymca.org/mcc in December that offers teens and families an opportunity to listen to a discussion about vaping, alcohol, marijuana, and stress/anxiety. The podcast’s panel of professionals answer thought-provoking questions that were submitted by parents and teens.

At a Hidden in Plain Sight presentation at the Madison Area YMCA: Chatham Borough Community Services Officer Brian Colatrella; Chatham Borough Police Chief Brian Gibbons; DEA Special Agent Tim McMahon; Chatham Township Police Department Juvenile Detective David Gallo; Morris County Sheriff James Gannon and Madison Police Department Narcotics Detective Ken Shannon.

The expert panelists include Dr. Gary Kohn, pediatric pulmonologist of Summit Medical Group, who addresses vaping concerns; Christine McIntyre and Mike Ecklund of Project Community Pride of the Madison Area YMCA; Madison High School Student Assistance Counselor Vanessa Morgenthaler; and John Cerrato and Kellie Kucinski, clinicians with High Focus. The Coalition will expand on this initiative and record additional podcasts in the coming months. The MCC’s latest campaign #MakeGoodChoices is focusing on four issues during 12 months. The Coalition kicked off the campaign focusing on vaping October through December, followed by stress from January-March, drinking AprilJune, and cyber-bullying July-September. The MCC and Madison and Chatham teens participate each year in pre-Super Bowl Sticker Shock Campaigns which are designed to deter the sale of alcoholic beverages to underage kids. Last year, the group pasted more than 1,500 bright green “Keep it Legal” stickers on cases of beer, ciders and coolers. Madison’s Main Street Wine Cellars and Rose City Liquors and Chatham’s Cottage Deli participated.

In conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and local law enforcement, for the past two years, the MCC co-hosted a mind-blowing presentation and exhibit “Hidden in Plain Sight” at the Madison Area YMCA and Chatham High School. A mock teen room that contained signals of potential teen substance use were on display. Parents and caregivers learned first-hand from officials working in the business about the latest drug trends and gained powerful insights about what to look for in a teenager’s space. Morris County Sheriff James Gannon, a great proponent of putting an end to substance use, also attended. Another forward-thinking program: The Madison Chatham Coalition partnered with Madison Memorial Home and the Chatham location of Bradley & Son Funeral Homes, to educate and inform the funeral homes’ clients about proper prescription drug disposal. The MCC provided complimentary Deterra envelopes, which are drug disposal kits that deactivate substances for trash disposal, for their clients. The MCC partnered with Fairleigh Dickinson University’s School of Pharmacy to spread awareness about prescribing opioids

and addiction prevention and treatment resources within our communities as part of the Partnership for Drug-Free New Jersey’s Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day initiative. The Madison Chatham Coalition is currently in its third year of funding and while the focus remains on preventing and reducing youth substance use through evidence-based environmental strategies, sustainability beyond the life span of the grant has also become a priority for the group. “We rely heavily on the support of our volunteers and local organizations that we partner with,” says Bardon. “And, we will continue to rely on these partners long after the federal funding goes away. At the end of the day, that’s what this grant is all about: Members of our community working together to ensure that teens are empowered to make healthy choices that will last a lifetime.” Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

FAQS WITH BUILDER ALAN ARCHULETA By Chatham Living

Congratulations! You were just awarded the Builder of the Year award from Metropolitan Builders and Contractors Association - tell us about that. Alan: Thank you… the award was from the Metro Builders association, based on a combination of quality of work, input from my peers, and based on work contributed to the betterment of the industry in the state of New Jersey. Tell us about your work in the Madison/Chatham area. Alan: I’ve been a Morris Township resident for 15+ years. Madison and Chatham has been my busiest markets for years, including Florham Park recently, a bit in Summit & Morristown as well. Madison and Chatham have been the most consistent. What’s the typical type of job you do? Alan: The average work is the $150K to $400K+ addition/ renovation work. Taking a 1950s, 60s outdated house and modernizing it--an addition out the back, doubling the size of the kitchen, adding a great room, above that a new master suite. Accompanying an all new roof, new windows, and siding and pulling it all together so that it looks like a brand new house. There was a huge inventory stock from this time, and while I also do new construction there are a lot of homes dated from this period.

from planning to finish. A bathroom, can be built quickly…but it’s how much planning and detail is taken from the beginning. The difference in any project is the details. When people are looking to find a builder for a project, what are the top questions they should be asking? Alan: Clearly experience is one, and where they typically work. You don’t want to hire a guy who’s all over the map. You want to do your research. How long they have been doing what they’ve been doing? Under the same name, same area? Ask friends & neighbors…and of course, do they have a current contractor’s license & insurance? Even references can be misleading. Are they local? Someone you know? Is it a friend of a friend? It’s really more about the overall presence of who the person is in the area.

2019 NJ BUILDER OF THE YEAR!

VOTED BY THE METROPOLITAN BUILDERS & CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION.

Archuleta Builders offers Custom Homes including Additions, Renovations & Remodels. Specializing in Kitchens, Bathrooms & Basements.

How do you work with clients from a design perspective? Alan: I get a lot of work from architects who know the quality of my work. If a client doesn’t have a local architect then we can offer architect referrals. I like this approach because it allows the client more flexibility on how the project will ultimately work for them. The architectural plan should be done in consideration of your budget vs. just trying to design into and around that budget. What sets you apart from other builders? Alan: I sell on quality construction. Costs are what it costs. We all buy from the same places, sometimes it’s the same subs. What I do is show what my mark up is on every thing. It’s an open book policy, no games. No BS. Every day my expenses are set prior to starting every day. Tell us about your process? Time to get things done? Alan: No right answer... It’s how focused, detailed and willingness of the client to be involved. When it’s a kitchen, bathroom or a renovation that really shuts down the comfort of a client’s lifestyle, the process is to take more time planning upfront - the more the better. A kitchen can take six months 8 | Chatham Living

STANLEY STEAMER AUTOMOBILES THE CHATHAM CONNECTION Contributed by Donald Davidson, Chatham Township Historical Society

I

t’s a small world when it comes to Stanley Steamer automobiles. I have been collecting antique cars since I was a teenager, and none have captivated my interest more than the steam powered Stanley Steamer made in Newton Massachusetts from 1899 to 1925. Since 1971 I have had the privilege of owning and operating several. My connection to these cars took on a new depth in 1997 when I married Sarah Stanley the great granddaughter of F.E. Stanley who, with his twin brother F.O., invented and produced these amazing machines. I have lived in Chatham since 1984 in the Mount Stanley District of Chatham, and yes, there is a connection to F.E. and F.O. Stanley. I was a little suspicious when I learned there was a Stanley Park, Stanley Terrace, and Stanley Congregational Church in town, but no one could tell me the origin of these names. In 2006 a local reporter contacted Sarah after learning about her connection to the Stanley Steamer family.

Don Davidson and his 1913 Stanley Steamer. (Photo by Sarah Stanley)

We learned that George Shepard Page left his home state of Maine in 1867 and moved to Chatham purchasing several hundred acres. He was 29 years old. His mother was a “Stanley” and his cousins were none other than F.E. and F.O. Stanley. George’s branch of the family was quite prosperous as his father had a successful oil and tar business in Maine. George set up a tar paper mill along the Passaic River here in Chatham. I found it marked as the Stanley Felt Mill on an 1867 map, where Stanley Park is today. Close by, Stanley Terrace still exists with its homes built for the workers. At one time Page employed more than 10% of all Chatham residents. In 1867 George also founded the outdoor Hillside Mission Sabbath School which became the Stanley Congregational Church. George quickly became a man to reckon with as he had the southern part of Chatham renamed Stanley in honor of his mother using her maiden name. He also convinced the Government to establish the Stanley Post Office of which he served as the first Postmaster. Indeed, had Page had his way, all of Chatham would today be called Stanley. It is obvious George was especially proud of his mother, her family name, and the family’s accomplishments.

Albion Stanley and his 1903 Stanley Steamer. (Chatham Township Historical Society photo from collection of Betty May San Filippo)

George’s son Albion, who with his siblings, took over the family business upon George’s death, was an automobile lover. He purchased a 1903 Stanley Steamer which he drove throughout Chatham and Madison, where he later lived. Albion’s granddaughter, Betty May San Filippo, provided the Chatham Township Historical Society with copies of photographs of Albion and his steamers. He last drove the car in 1938 before selling it to a New Jersey man. Albion also owned a 1908 Model F Stanley Steamer. I do not know who owns it now, but it is not in town. Today the only Stanley Steamer in Chatham sits in my garage where it is lovingly tended by me and Sarah Stanley.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCES AND PARENT PARTNERSHIPS AT INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD EDUCATION CENTERS/SCHOOLS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Contributed by Kare Matrisciano, Director of the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center of the Madison Area YMCA

E

arly experiences are crucial to a child’s development and school readiness. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children learn best and develop resilience for life’s challenges when their early experiences are consistent, developmentally sound and emotionally supportive. Additionally, when young child education centers and schools partner with parents, the long-term benefits are immense—childhood milestones are met, children feel safe and secure, and parents feel valued, respected and supported. With the increase in academic and social expectations of children at early ages, foundations must be laid—starting with infants—to prepare them to tackle more complex, integrated learning.

years old is designed to help children develop the more complex range of skills characteristic of this age that will prepare them for kindergarten. The programis from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. without lunch or9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. with lunch (included in tuition). The program is available three, four or five days a week, and provides children with a structured, academically enriched learning environment. Children must be reliably toilet trained.Teachers with an average tenure of more than 12 years help children develop pre-reading and writing readiness using a broad array of materials that engage children and make learning fun. Classroom activities focus on building independence and confidence while stretching young minds with a wide variety of handson experiences that promote social, emotional and cognitive development in a safe and nurturing learning community. The F.M. Kirby Children’s Center of the Madison Area YMCA provides a solid early education foundation with structured curriculums for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, in addition to enriching before- and after-school programs, and specialty programs such as Talking Tots, Preschool Readiness and Kindergarten Readiness. Teachers use the universally acclaimed Creative Curriculum which includes developmentally appropriate goals and objectives that promote independence, self-confidence and self-control.Since Kirby is part of the Madison Area YMCA, the Center offers an all-inclusive experience that develops the whole child. Students can take swimming, sports, gymnastics, performing arts and enrichment classes at the Y’s Family Center.

QUEST CAMPS Create. Grow. Explore.

Families today also need flexibility. They require schools to be able to work with them to provide creative options. For example, in addition to full-day programming, Kirby offers half-day toddler and preschool programs: For children between the ages of 20 months and 3 years old, the half-day toddler program is held from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.with healthy snacks included. This program, available three, four or five days a week, is designed for families who need less than a full-day toddler program, but would like their children to have the developmental benefits of a rich, stimulating environment and peer group. Using the same curriculum as the full-day program, it compresses the day to structure activities and routines that focus on building the skills that toddlers need. Language development, independence, sense of self and others, toilet training and physical growth and development are all key aspects. CAN YOUR MOTIVATION WORK AGAINST YOUR HEALTH GOALS?

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

ongratulations! You’ve stuck to your New Year’s resolution to prioritize your health. You’ve been running, going to group training / boot camp classes or hitting the weight room. You’re sticking to the routine and noticing the positive results from your effort and sweat. You’re proud of yourself, and you should be. It has not been easy, but you actually start looking forward to the challenge. You even start to wonder why you never stuck with this before. Then, seemingly unrelated, you begin to notice some aches and pains such as: • Your foot is really hurts when getting out of bed in the morning, but you limp through it. • Your knee hurts mostly when going downstairs, so you do it very carefully. • Your back hurts when lifting routine things like the laundry basket. • Your get random sharp elbow or shoulder pain when reaching or even trying to sleep. It crosses your mind that these pains might be from your new exercises. You rationalize, “it can’t be because it doesn’t always hurt when you exercise”. Furthermore, you’ve come this far and don’t want to lose what you’ve gained! You think “No Pain, No Gain, right?” “Gotta get that run in today”. “Don’t lose your spot in boot camp class”. “Don’t let them think you quit at the gym”. “I need to stay motivated or else I will fail again this year!” I am not here to quash your motivation. I am here to help you

redirect and focus your motivation where needed before you become a casualty of it like many others. Pressing on despite warning signs from aches and pains will inevitably force you to stop exercising, limit your time with family and friends, impact your sleep and work and negatively affect your wellbeing. Think about what your real goal is. Was it to make every class or run everyday? Your real goal was to improve your health. I appreciate that sticking to the routine is how you think you will reach your goal, but managing those aches and pains as a key part of improving your overall health, which is your ultimate goal. The morning foot pain, knee pain with stairs or the sharp back pain or shoulder zingers likely have been underlying weaknesses that are now luckily exposed by the new activities. Ignoring them will ultimately force you to stop. Even worse, you may begin to believe thoughts like “I always get hurt when I exercise” or “I guess it’s just my age and I have to accept it” negatively affecting your long term health and wellbeing. Solution: The “no pain, no gain” concept does not apply here. Pay attention to warning signs of pain with daily activities or workouts. Addressing these issues improve your foundational strength so that you will have significantly greater success moving forward. Let us be your guide on this journey towards improving your health. Our team of physical therapists are specifically trained in spotting these injuries often before you may even realize it. We offer complimentary Discovery Visits in which we can identify such problems and keep you on course. YOU'RE UNIQUE... SHOULDN'T YOUR PRESCRIPTION BE TOO? Contributed by Dana Noblett, RPH, Liberty Drug & Surgical

W

hen a big pharmaceutical company brings a commercial product to market, the strength, color, flavor and other inactive ingredients of the product are based on what the manufacturer believes will appeal to the largest segment of the population. In order to be profitable big pharmaceutical companies mass produce medications with a “one size fits all” mentality. What if one size fits all doesn’t fit...you? What if your child is a diabetic and the sugar in commercially produced antibiotic suspensions are wreaking havoc with their blood glucose levels? Or you’re struggling with gluten sensitivity and can’t tolerate the gluten in your high blood pressure medication causing you to become noncompliant resulting in uncontrolled hypertension. Maybe you’re uncomfortable with the added dyes and coloring agents in your prescription because you believe they might be adding to hyperactivity? Dyes, sugar and other additives can cause problems in sensitive patients causing a myriad of unintended results. Patients have many reasons to want to avoid these additives but big pharmaceutical companies can’t possibly take into account the individualized needs of every patient. They are happy to settle for one size fits most.

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR This is the beauty of the art of compounding. Trained compounding pharmacists work with patients to craft a prescription which addresses their specific needs. Troublesome additives such as sugar, starch, gluten and dyes can be eliminated which can increase compliance. Gluten free, sugar free and dye free products can be compounded with no alteration in the efficacy of the prescription. In addition to issues with additives, the taste of a medication can also be problematic. Children especially pose many unique challenges when it comes to medication: they may resist taking a medication because they dislike the taste or texture. Even commercially available suspensions flavored by the manufacturer may be intolerable to small children. Having a sick child is stressful but the added struggle of a child refusing to take their medication due to an unpleasant taste is a headache no parent needs. Fortunately, compounding pharmacists can help with these situations. Pharmacists can make taking medicine a little easier by compounding prescriptions with a child’s favorite flavor. Coloring can also be added to entice a child to take the medication or compounds can be color free if that is preferred. A better tasting medication is more likely to increase your child’s compliance and minimize spillage or waste during administration. Increased compliance contributes to a more rapid and complete recovery for patients and piece of mind for parents. Eliminating unwanted additives, improving the taste of prescriptions and helping patients increase compliance are all in a days work for a specially trained compounding pharmacist. Have a conversation with your local compounding pharmacist about how their knowledge can help you! You’re unique...shouldn’t your prescription be unique too? Dana Noblett, RPh is a compounding pharmacist at Liberty Drug Compounding Center. He has many years experience in compounding prescriptions to make patients’ lives better. Dana welcomes all questions about compounding.

NEW LAWS CAN HELP YOU SAVE MORE FOR RETIREMENT Contributed by Brian McGeough, Chatham Wealth Management

W

Another important age-based change in the new law is the repeal of the rule that prohibited contributions to an IRA after the age of 70 ½. Now, if you have earned income, you can contribute to a traditional IRA past the age of 70 ½ regardless of your age. As before, there are no age-based restrictions on contributions to a Roth IRA. There is also good news for part-time employees. This new law expands who can contribute to their firm’s 401(k) plan. Previously, employees who worked less than 1,000 hours during the year were not allowed to participate in their firm’s 401(k) plan. Beginning in 2021, employees who have worked at least 500 hours per year for at least three consecutive years are eligible to participate in their firm’s 401(k) plan. The employee must be 21 years old by the end of the 3-year period and cannot be working under a collective bargaining agreement to qualify. Some Other Potential Benefits:

ith the passage of the government’s new spending bill in December comes several changes that will increase many Americans’ ability to save money for retirement. The SECURE (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement) Act goes into effect January 1, 2020 and has many provisions designed to boost retirement savings and expand the ranks of those who can contribute to IRAs and 401(k) plans. The Main Benefits: Before the passage of SECURE, most people were required to start taking distributions from their IRAs and 401(k) plans when they turned 70 ½ years old. This required minimum distribution (RMD) is considered taxable income. Under the new law, the age for RMDs is now 72 years old starting in 2020. This gives seniors an extra year and a half to let their assets grow tax-deferred before they are required to take money out of their retirement accounts and pay accompanying taxes. If you turned 70 ½ during 2019 and should be taking RMDs, you are still required to take the RMD in 2020 and beyond. However, if you turn 70 ½ in 2020, you can wait until age 72 to start taking your RMD.

• People with new babies or adopted children can withdraw up to $5,000 from their IRA or 401(k) plans without paying the 10% early withdraw penalty. Married couples can take $5,000 each to cover to expense associated with their growing family. However, incomes taxes will apply unless you repay the funds, and this rule does not apply if you are adopting your spouse’s child. • Plan sponsors can now offer annuities and other lifetime income products to their participants. • Individuals pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies or research can now consider stipends, fellowships or similar payments as compensation for the purposes of making IRA contributions. The goal is to incentivize young people to start saving for retirement earlier. And One Big Negative: • Under the new law, distributions from inherited IRAs to nonspouse beneficiaries are not allowed to be “stretched” over the recipient’s lifetime. In other words, all funds from an inherited IRA must be distributed to non-spouse beneficiaries within 10 years of the IRA owner’s death. While there are exceptions for minors, the disabled and the chronically ill who are not more than 10 years younger than the deceased, this could mean that many people inherit funds during their prime earning years and will have to take

distribution at a higher tax rate than if they were able to stretch the distributions over the rest of their lifetime. For minors, luckily, the 10-year rule does not kick in until the child reaches the age of maturity. Luckily, for those who inherit their IRA before January 1, 2020, the accelerated distribution plan does not apply. Overall, the new SECURE Act rules are designed to allow people to start saving more towards their retirement at an earlier age. It also lengthens the number of years that workers can put money into retirement plans and increases the number of people who can save using these products. CAN NON-SURGICAL RHINOPLASTY RIVAL THE REAL DEAL?

T

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

Contributed by Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj, Chatham MediSpa here’s much to like about the idea of a non-surgical nose job – quick, highly tolerable, and little to no downtime. Add the fact that it is less expensive than the traditional rhinoplasty, and it’s easy to see why this alternative nose job is quickly trending.

sedation to reshape the nose contour by correcting the cartilage and bones. Recovery takes about two weeks, depending on the patient. Although, many patients return to work within a week to ten days.

• How will I look?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty (liquid nose job) uses injectable dermal fillers to add volume and improve the shape of the nose. Many patients opt for this option, because their aesthetic concerns are minimal and don’t warrant surgery, or they want to avoid the cost or recovery of surgery. Their nose appearance may be a bit off, and they want to achieve a cosmetic change quickly and easily. Time restraints may play a role as well.

What is a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty?

Is Liquid Rhinoplasty Right for Every Patient?

This cosmetic procedure is a technique which uses FDAapproved dermal fillers like Restylane®, Juvéderm®,and Radiesse®, to improve and modify the contour of the nose. Non-surgical rhinoplasty is popular with patients who want to change the appearance of their nose without the required downtime or expense of surgery. The procedure takes less than an hour and will provide temporary results lasting about one year.

The procedure is for patients who want to improve nose contours but have no time or interest in a surgical procedure. With that said, a liquid rhinoplasty offers a temporary improvement to the shape of the nose.

But there are some important facts to consider before deciding if a “liquid rhinoplasty” is right for you. Questions like: • How long will it take? • Is it safe?

Traditional Rhinoplasty Versus Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Traditional rhinoplasty is about changing nose contours and improving nose function. Whether the patient suffers from breathing issues or not, the surgical rhinoplasty will ensure open air flow through the nasal passages. In addition, nose contours experience improvement even if the primary reason for surgery is functional. Rhinoplasty surgery can help with problems including sinus issues, allergies, snoring and breathing concerns. If these are problematic with the patient, a traditional rhinoplasty is the recommended solution. Dr. Slupchynskyj performs rhinoplasty surgery under twilight

Also, it’s important to understand that a non-surgical nose job will only hide the problem – not fix it. If you have a hump on your nose, the procedure will not make the hump go away. It will only fill in the area around it. If the patient suffers from functional issues, a non-surgical rhinoplasty will not fix these problems. How Do I Know What’s Right for Me? When seeking a cosmetic solution to improve the shape of your nose, it’s good to have more than one option. Having another choice that is less invasive and offers little to no downtime is a positive. The best way to understand which treatment is best for you is to consult with one or two board certified plastic surgeons. They should assess your nose appearance, its functionality, and your desired outcome and give you enough information to make an informed decision.
