Quite a family with a myriad of interests and multiple work, community and personal experiences that make them particularly interesting--not to mention that their son Sawyer, 13, is a Chatham Middle School 7th grader who was chosen as one of 64 kids in his age group to compete on the first season of American Ninja Warrior Junior on NBC’s Universal Kids Channel! Congrats Sawyer! Great to have them as our featured family this month, see the story on page 4. The Chatham Historical Society article this month is entitled “Chatham Borough in 1874”. It’s a recap of an article from a book published that year. At the time the writer predicted that Chatham’s destiny is to be a mill town.” Want to read more about prevailing thoughts on Chatham then--at the time a town of just 800 residents? See the story on page 7. From the Chatham Township Historical Society we have an article about Anthony Tesoriero of Scout Troop 121 who completed his Eagle Scout project for them in 2017. The project was an app for an iPhone-based audio tour of the Township Historical Society’s historic markers. The app takes listeners on a driving tour through the Township stopping at each of the 14 markers. Along the way, listeners are told of the town’s history. Very cool! We have two Expert Contributor articles this month: "Non-Invasive Facial Rejuvenation Can Reverse the Effects of Aging Without Surgery" contributed by Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj on page 10 and "The Madison Area YMCA: An Anchor Institution in our Community" contributed by the Y on page 12. We are starting a new feature this month that we’ve been doing in Madison Living for a few months now. It’s called "10 Questions with…." (Side note: Yes, there is a Madison Living too, which you can check out at www.madisonlivingnj.com). This month we are featuring Chatham Borough resident Betsy Mirabelli, a landscape painter whose work is featured in the Art League of the Chatham's Winter Show in the LundtGlover Gallery, going on now through mid March. See page 17.

RESIDENT FEATURE

MEET THE LOOFBOURROW SHAW FAMILY By Stacey McEvoy Photos by Christine Loy Photography and courtesy of the Loofbourrow Shaw family

K

elly Loofbourrow, a Southern California girl, and Jason Shaw from New Jersey, met in Seattle in 1992 when Jason returned from an eight-month backpacking trip throughout Indonesia and Australia after graduating from Ithaca College. Kelly, who graduated from St. Olaf College with a BA in Modern Dance and a minor in psychology, was a dancer, dance teacher and gymnastics coach while she earned her Laban/Bartenienff Movement Analysis post grad degree at the University of Washington. Prior to starting college, Kelly traveled as a dancer for a gap year with “Up with People” where she stayed with host families, worked on community volunteer projects and performed family shows internationally. She also performed in the Super Bowl XX halftime show. In 1993, Kelly and Jason backpacked to Alaska and ended up in the town of Pelican as deckhands for two seasons of salmon trolling and long lining for black cod and halibut. Through a circuitous route, the couple moved to Utah where they lived and worked for two years. After marrying in 1997, they moved to Philadelphia for Jason to attend The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Kelly worked as a federal grant coordinator at Children’s Seashore House. After earning his MBA, they moved back to Seattle and Jason worked at Amazon.com where he launched Amazon’s electronics store and invented the old Amazon “Gold Box” that appeared in the top right corner of the website. The couple’s daughters, Alexandra (Alex) and Isadora (Issy), were also born in Seattle. After 11 different addresses across seven states, the family moved to Chatham in 2003 when Jason decided to buy his father’s paint business. Two years later, their son Sawyer was born. 4 | Chatham Living

The family appreciates having the ability to hike and live near farms in Chatham while also having easy access to Manhattan. “We regularly pick or buy fresh apples and peaches from Hillview Farms and Park Farms in Chester. We love dried apples and applesauce and make tons of them! We hike, bike and kayak often--our favorite local places are Loantaka, HackleBarney State Park and Van Campens Glenn at Delaware Water Gap. Our city favorites are MOMA, the MET, High Line, Strand Bookstore, Jazz at Terra Blues, thrift shopping and Chelsea Market,” says Kelly, noting that when not in Chatham, the family can usually be found visiting Kelly’s family in Laguna Beach, CA, or at the Loofbourrow family cottage outside of Wiarton, Ontario, on the Bruce Peninsula.

for the Wine Traders softball team that has won two championships in the Chatham Men’s Bull Lehmann League. He is an assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts, makes a kickin’ ginger beer, a delicious batch of applesauce and tries to fit guitar playing in daily since 2016. Alex, 19, is a freshman in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. She loved playing as a volleyball setter for Chatham High School and on regional and national teams at Allegro and Atlantic Valley Volleyball Clubs in offseason. She took part in CHS Bridge building competitions and left her

Jason is currently CEO of Perfect Color Ventures, a business started by him and his brother Dana after evolving it from the third generation 75-year-old home decorating family business. Kelly also works in the business. The company sells paint online through MyPerfectColor. com that ships paint throughout the country. They specialize in difficult colors for business applications. Clients include Tiffany & Co and Yeti Coolers. Jason and his brother also own Breslow Home Design Center, based in Chester, where they sell window treatments and retractable awnings throughout the tristate area. In his spare time, Jason plays soccer weekly in a men’s league and goes sailing with Chatham friends. He pitches

mark by helping paint the Cougar mural near the Chatham Middle School auditorium. As sophomores at CHS, Alex and two engineering-focused friends, who had previously worked together on a Robotics team in 8th grade, started an Engineering Enrichment class for Lafayette School students that had beginner and advanced levels. They loved designing the curriculum and sharing the projects that they learned at engineering summer camps they attended at Rutgers University and Michigan Tech for several years. Issy, 16, a Chatham High School sophomore can usually be found reading, playing volleyball, drawing or discovering new music. A former Chatham United soccer player, she played JV and Varsity volleyball at CHS and now plays club for Allegro Volleyball. She frequently keeps it mellow at home since she’s happiest with a book in her lap, a paintbrush in her hand or playing a new record. Issy is the family strategist, routinely crushing the family in most any card or board game. Her creativity frequently inspires delicious baking and elegant dinners or hours learning and perfecting elaborate Halloween make-up. She was invited to enter one of her drawings into the Morris County District Show held at Morris County Community college last year. She spent the summer learning to work on a bigger scale with spray paint. Sawyer, 13, is a Chatham Middle School 7th grader who was chosen as one of 64 kids in his age group to compete on the first season of American Ninja Warrior Junior on NBC’s Universal Kids Channel. He was flown to Hollywood last summer for four days to compete, which came with interviews and photo shoots. “The hardest part was the moment standing on the platform before the race. It was completely

nerve racking….and holding the smile for so long in the photo shoot,” says Sawyer, who was mentored and coached by one of his favorite American Ninja Warrior competitors Najee Richardson. On the show, Sawyer’s slogan was “Keep it Shawsome” coined by Alex’s best friend, Mila Cloidt, who made the logo representing Sawyer’s long mop hair on shoes. It means to keep it positive…keep it chill. Sawyer’s races aired in the 7th episode on Nov. 24. He made it into the semi-finals which will air on April 13. Sawyer hones his ninja warrior skills at Centercourt Athletic Club and does gymnastics at Indigo Gymnastics. Additionally, he is an assistant patrol leader in the Boys Scouts and loves camping. He’s always tinkering with something. He’s currently trying to improve his soldering and learn more about electricity. Embracing Chatham life since she arrived in town, Kelly was a dance teacher at the Madison Area YMCA, served as a Chatham Girl Scouts troop leader, spent two years as Chatham Girl Scouts Unit Service Manager, was active in the Milton Avenue School PTO, the Art in the Classroom program and the Lafayette Head Show. “Fostering empowered and wellrounded kids, particularly girls, is a clear passion of mine,” says Kelly, whose favorite moment was teaching Chatham 5th grade Girl Scouts how to use power tools and build picnic benches to donate to Family Promise. These past few years, Kelly has turned her focus to broader community issues. She is currently the Municipal Alliance

RESIDENT FEATURE Committee of the Chathams (MACC) Coordinator www.chathammacc.org. The group works to foster a healthy and connected Chatham community knowing that connections are the key to youth substance use prevention. The MAAC committee was awarded the 2018 Borough Committee of the Year last summer. “Ultimately, it is because the committee has invested members from so many sectors of our community and is constantly trying to serve the community in new ways,” says Kelly. “My work as the coordinator has made me really love Chatham. I have yet to meet anyone along my path of programming,

planning and coordinating that has said, ‘No.’” She lists numerous groups that lend their support to MACC: School District of the Chathams including the superintendent and student assistance counselors, Chatham Borough and Township police departments, Chatham Borough Council and Chatham Township Committee members and administrators, the recreation department, the Chatham Senior Center and Project Community Pride of the Madison Area YMCA. Kelly notes that the recent addition of the Madison Chatham Coalition (MCC) www.madisonchathamcoalition. org, in partnership with the Madison Area YMCA, has propelled MACC efforts beyond its usual activities and is maximizing preventative measures for 1218 year old children in Chatham. “Most simply put MACC and MCC are the conduits for engaging and helping as many sectors of the community prevent underage substance use and substance abuse disorder. Much of our efforts focus on middle and high school education and programs; but, staying engaged with the whole community is our overall goal. The wonderful thing about MACC and MCC is not what you can see on paper, but rather the dedicated community members working on a regular basis to improve the outcomes of the community’s youth, seniors and at-risk members,” she says, naming two of several successful initiatives that the organizations partner on: Sticker Shock Campaigns which involves putting “Keep

Sawyer at American Ninja Warrior Junior in California it Legal” stickers on cases of beer in stores and their three-year participation in the October “Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day.” If interested in exploring opportunities with MACC, reach out to Kelly at chathammacc@gmail.com. Meetings are held the second Wed. of each month at 9 a.m. at Chatham Borough Hall. Email MCC Coordinator Allison Bardon at abardon@madisonymca.org for more information about MCC. Meetings are held monthly at the Madison Area YMCA.

CHATHAM BOROUGH IN 1874 Contributed by Gerry Giesler, Chatham Historical Society

T

oday most people think of Chatham Borough as a "middle of suburbia bedroom community," owing its reputation as such, and to the mostly residential character of the town, as well as the convenient access to highways and the commuter rail service to New York City. Almost 150 years ago Chatham had a much different, and somewhat more rural, yet industrial, character. In 1874, J.K. Hoyt of Madison, NJ published Pen and Pencil Pictures On The Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad. The book was a result of a trip he made along the line, stopping to spend some time at each town along the way. In it, he includes a pen and pencil picture of each town, along with its past history, current developments, and his thoughts as to the future.

When Hoyt was writing his book, Chatham had a population of about 800 residents and was described as one of the oldest towns on the line with “one distressingly long street, commencing at the river." He noted that Chatham “has been a rather sleepy place in the past," but that an infusion of new blood would soon bring some changes. Hoyt described the numerous “saw, grist, and other" mills along the Passaic River, with power obtained by damming the river. He observed that at least one mill was powered by both water and steam. He also wrote about the presence of “one of the largest brick yards along the road," located where the Lum Ave field is today. As for the future of Chatham, he predicted “Its destiny is to be a mill town, with suburbs in the surrounding hills." Hoyt mentioned the presence of commuters, and noted that the town had recently created more residential building lots. He goes on to comment that many cannot spend more than an hour upon the rails for their trip each way, but for those who can that “nowhere within a less distance from the city can precisely the same condition of soil, climate, and scenery be found that we have here.” He further describes Chatham as having “an air so pure and salubrious that physicians have recommended it to their asthmatic and consumptive patients.” In closing, he states “Chatham is the gateway to as fine a county as the sun shines upon." While there are who would still agree with that last statement today, we can see that the sun shines today on a somewhat different Chatham than the one that Mr. Hoyt visited in 1874.

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

NON-INVASIVE FACIAL REJUVENATION CAN REVERSE THE EFFECTS OF AGING WITHOUT SURGERY Contributed by Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj

T

he newest innovations in facial rejuvenation are about increasing the patient’s comfort and speeding up recovery without compromising results. That’s why there’s been such a surge for non-surgical or non-invasive procedures recently; more and more people are starting to prefer non-surgical procedures, because they have a diverse range of techniques and effects without the intense commitment of surgery. Non-surgical facial rejuvenation is a great alternative to surgery because the procedures have been developed, tested, and modified to be effective safe alternatives. People also tend to like them, because they address the deeper, more physical aspects of aging by directly affecting the skin. What are the top safest non-invasive procedures available? Laser Resurfacing In my practice, this treatment uses a state-of-the-art Spectrum Laser that eradicates signs of sun damage like wrinkles and discoloration, and it can drastically improve depressions in the skin, such as acne scarring. The treatment can be customized based upon the nature of skin damage and skin type. Dermal Fillers Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, are some of the most popular nonsurgical ways to perform skin rejuvenation today. They’re an unbelievably safe way to create volume under the skin while

filling out lines, hollows under the eyes and deep creases in the face. Even better is that some dermal fillers have results lasting as long as a few months, while others can last for up to a year. BOTOX® This ever-popular injectable can smooth out expression lines and deep creases for months after only a minutes-long procedure. It’s best for treating lines which result from repeated facial expressions most commonly seen in the forehead, between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and vertical wrinkles around the lips. It’s considered one of the safest and most effective cosmetic procedures ever. THE MADISON AREA YMCA: SAYING “YES” TO THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1873 Plans to Add Pool, Gymnasium and Expand Fitness Center By Stacey McEvoy

S

ince 1873, the Madison Area YMCA has always said “yes” to the community. Through the vision, leadership and dedication of the Y’s administration, board members and employees, the Y has evolved and expanded to meet the community’s growing needs—from its beginnings on Main Street in downtown Madison to its current location on Kings Road, which underwent a major facility expansion in 2000—and has remained steadfast in its commitment to continue to say “yes” and make the community better now and into the future.

Recognizing the needs of its members and neighbors, and the challenges and limitations of its current facility, the Madison Area YMCA launched a capital campaign to embark on an ambitious, exciting $12 million expansion project at its Family Center: add an eight-lane pool and upgrade the existing pool in the aquatics center; increase the sports and recreation center to include a full-size gymnasium; and enlarge the health and fitness center to provide more workout space and equipment and additional offerings for chronic disease prevention and management. The Y plans to break ground later this year. To learn more about the project, the community is invited to visit the Y’s Family Center for a vision tour or visit www.madisonareaymca.org for a virtual tour. As a 501(c)(3) cause-driven charitable organization serving more than 15,000 people each year the Madison Area YMCA provides opportunities for children, families and adults to experience Y membership, programming such as gymnastics, swimming,

performing arts, sports, enrichment and health & wellness programs at its Family Center on Kings Road as well as child care, education and day camp at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center on East Street in Madison. With a deep understanding of the community’s need to embrace a healthy body, spirit and mind, the Y developed a suite of programming to support individuals and their families who might be going through a life-changing chronic illness or difficult time in their lives. Programs include: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program for cancer survivors, Diabetes Prevention Program, Community Mental Health Initiative, Delay the Disease for Parkinson’s disease, One Step for Multiple Sclerosis and Enhance Fitness for older adults and Project Community Pride, a counseling program for children and their families. The Y is also involved with the Madison Chatham Coalition, a data-driven program that focuses on the prevention of youth substance use. Everything the Y does is in service of making the community better. For some people, these services may not be attainable because of cost. Through fundraising campaigns, the Y makes sure that these opportunities are available to everyone in the community, regardless of their ability to pay.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY OF THE CHATHAMS PRESENTS ITS ANNUAL BOOK SALE: MARCH 9 Contributed by Salli McMorrow

T

he Friends of the Library of the Chathams will hold its annual book sale at the library, 214 Main St., on Sat., March 9.

The sale is a major fundraiser for the Friends with all proceeds going toward the purchase of more books, CDs and DVDs for use by our library patrons. More than 40,000 items are donated to this sale by Chatham’s community of books and music lovers. There's something for everyone. The selection is amazing in all categories – fiction, history, biographies, art, classical, cookbooks and music. The children’s section is an especially favorite one with brand new and hardly-used classics and modern children’s specialties. It is a perfect place for parents and grandparents to pick up gifts, or just fun to browse for future favorites. Giving the gift of love for reading to children is one of life’s greatest thrills. Creating a need to read is priceless, something a child has for the rest of his or her life. The popular collectors’ corner showcases rare and collectible books as well as better children’s books and cookbooks and recent 2018 publications. From the collecting and sorting of the donations to the final sale days, the volunteers who work at the event gain something for themselves they can’t find anywhere else – friends, fun and community service. Those who have been part of the event for years would not miss it. A simple love of books and giving back to their community make the long weeks worth every minute. The enjoyment on the faces of the customers at the sale is extremely satisfying. Most books sell for a dollar, but the experience is priceless. Members of the Friends of the Chatham Library who live in

HISTORY IS THE FUTURE Contributed by Patricia Wells, Chatham Township Historical Society

I

n 2017 Anthony Tesoriero of Scout Troop 121 completed his Eagle Scout project for the Chatham Township Historical Society. The project was an application or app for an iPhone-based audiotour of the Historical Society’s historic markers. The app takes listeners on a driving tour through the Township stopping at each of the 14 markers. Along the way the listeners are told of the town’s history. A safety note: the app must only be used by a passenger while the driver pays attention to the road.

When Tony started work on the app in 2015 he quickly realized he’d have to learn a lot more about programming. So he did. The completed app required more than 500 hours of work and the Township Historical Society is thrilled to have it. You can obtain the app, “Tour Chatham Township” for free on the iTunes App Store or just scan the Quick Response (QR) symbol on this page.

While home from his first semester of college in December, Tony explained how he created his app to Pack 6 Cub Scouts when they visited the Red Brick Schoolhouse Museum. The scouts were enthralled by the idea that they too could do programming. The wheels were starting to turn! What programs will these kids invent in the future?

The scouts also had a great time doing a scavenger hunt through the museum’s exhibits which show what life in the town was like when it was still a farming community. Both kids and adult groups are welcome at the museum. Contact Sheila Goggins, the museum director at museum@ chathamtownshiphistoricalsociety.org to make arrangements.

Purple Aardvark carries "Made in USA" gifts for all, including some custom options. Jewelry repairs, watch batteries & a full selection of jewelry are also available. We proudly sell works from local artisans of all ages.

The Chatham Township Historical Society has ideas for Eagle Scout and Gold Award projects. Tony’s project was the second one done for the Society. Brad Styple completed the first one by making two traveling displays of artifacts excavated from the Loantaka Revolutionary War Encampment site at Giralda Farms. Brad’s displays were first shown at the Library of The Chathams and are now in the museum.

10 QUESTIONS WITH. . . . BETSY MIRABELLI By Stacey McEvoy

C

hatham Borough resident Betsy Mirabelli, a landscape painter, is the Art League of the Chatham's Winter Show solo-featured artist in the Lundt-Glover Gallery, going on now through mid March. She had fun with Chatham Living this month and answered "10 Questions," our newest section of the magazine. What do you enjoy about being a artist?

The fun and excitement of the painting process itself. Once I take in the view or the scene I am going to paint, I think through the composition, lights and darks and think of things I want to emphasize or eliminate. Then the real fun begins with my watercolors. It's the interaction of the pigment, water and flow of the brush. With my pictures I have great opportunities to have a simple mark or brush of color represent a shape or figure. The best results happen after an hour of painting, viewing and revising a picture. From there I find myself totally focused and that's really great to have that energy transferred to the picture. What is a perfect day in Chatham for you? The day could be warm and sunny...first take the dog for a walk and talk with all of our wonderful neighbors, then go to a pre-determined location and paint with the New Jersey Plein Air Painters or go over to Summit and paint with my friends at Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, return home with a small drawing or picture and then go to the local pool and read a book.

What piece of advice would you give your younger self?

If I could have one super power, what would it be?

If you could meet and have coffee with anyone living or dead, who would it be?

Not sure.

Remember you don't have to do everything and fix everything. Think things through and pause to enjoy each day. If you were shipped to a deserted island for six months, what album would you bring? U2: The Best of 1990-2000.

Churchill. Also, Leonardo da Vinci, if he was around.

What are your hobbies?

What was your favorite subject in school?

Reading, painting and hiking. Are you a dog person or cat person?

History.

A dog person--we have a golden retriever who loves people and lots of attention.

To be more athletic and have the ability to run a few miles.

What other talent do you wish you had?

ADOPT-A-PET

St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center provides services that support the human-animal bond and seeks to foster an environment in which people respect all living creatures. Learn how you can volunteer, foster, donate, and adopt at sthuberts.org. You can meet and adopt any of the following animals at our Madison Campus, 575 Woodland Avenue.

Contributed by Matt Wildman, St. Hubert’s Photos by Erin Bauers

Hobo’s foster says, “Hobo loves to meow! He also loves to be pet & falls over into your hand & goes nuts for lower back “tushy” pets. He is extremely social and well-behaved. Upon meeting me & my husband he was on our couch & meowing for us to pet him within minutes. He also loved our other cats and always used the litter box!”

Catalina’s foster says, “Catalina has a sweet disposition and is very well behaved. She is house trained. She loves to cuddle and doesn’t need excessive exercise. Catalina is great at napping and would make a wonderful apartment or house pet. Walking Catalina was a breeze, she didn’t pull or try to chase after other dogs. If I was able to adopt a dog, Catalina would be my girl!” 18 | Chatham Living

Teddy’s foster says, “Teddy is incredibly people-oriented, and comes to greet you with loud purrs whenever you enter the room. Teddy is the perfect cat for any family! Within an hour of arriving at our house, he came out to greet me with purrs at the ready. He used the litter box perfectly and quickly warmed up to a toddler in the home. Teddy has pretty much a perfect temperament for any household.”

C arle o ter a C arle i a e elle t u fit or any family. He loves walks, is house broken and loves playing with toys. Charley’s stunning good looks and warm personality have all the humans melting when they meet him. Charley loves a good mixer, he gets along extremely well with other dogs and even though nobody likes a show-off, this handsome fellow can even sit on command.”

Chatham Living would like to thank Freshpet for their sponsorship of St. Hubert’s Adopt-A-Pet.
