Our cover story is about the incredible journey the DiMaggio family took when their middle son, Michael, was hit by a car on Main Street four years ago walking home from school. The DiMaggios are forever grateful to the Chatham community for helping them get through Michael's threemonth stay in the hospital, eight surgeries, seven weeks in a rehab center and two years of physical therapy. The family invites the community to join them in donating blood at the Annual Michael DiMaggio Blood Drive on Sun., Dec. 9, from 10AM to 3PM at Chatham High School. Ice Skating...got to love it, and Chatham area residents have for quite some time. Pat Wells from the Chatham Township Historical Society contributes some insights on how and where on Page 7. The Township Historical Society even has some old skates you can see at their Red Brick Schoolhouse Museum at 24 Southern Boulevard. The Museum's hours are the first Sunday of every month from 2pm to 4pm. Check it out! So what is Cannabidiol (CBD) and what are its benefits? Our Expert Contributor article from Al Brown at Liberty Drug provides background and information on this legal, non-addictive, non-psychoactive compound that is derived from the hemp plant and found in marijuana plants as well. Among the benefits of using CBD--either in oil, capsule or gummy form-are relief from pain, anxiety, inflammation, stress, arthritis, PMS, digestive disorders, insomnia, seizures and headaches. See the article on page 10. Did you know about the Art League of the Chathams? I did not... and they are celebrating their 30th anniversary! So I was happy to hear from them and have them submit an article to us. A lil bit about them, The Art League of the Chatham's is a supportive community of visual artists living in the area of Chatham, N.J. The league’s mission is to nurture the artistic development of its members, to foster an appreciation of art in the community, and to have art on display in the Chatham Township Municipal Building year round. See the article on page 12, and their web site at http://www.artleagueofthechathams.org/ New to Chatham or even not new and want to meet some people in town? MEET THE DIMAGGIO FAMILY By Stacey McEvoy Photos by Christine Loy Photography and courtesy of the DiMaggio family

F

our years ago, the unthinkable happened. Michael DiMaggio, a Chatham Middle School 6th grader at the time, was hit by a car while walking home from school on an October day in 2014. Elevenyear-old Michael spent three months in the hospital, including a week in the intensive care unit. He spent six weeks at Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown with an additional seven weeks in rehab at Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick. Subsequently, he spent the next two years in physical therapy up to five days per week. He had eight surgeries to reconstruct his left leg that doctors weren’t sure they could save. He survived, and his leg was saved. “It was our first miracle,” says his mother Nicole. Having suffered severe nerve damage, Michael had partial paralysis in his leg and wore an orthotic device. The second miracle occurred during physical therapy when Michael slightly flexed his foot—a huge accomplishment. Nicole recalls the doctor saying, “Throw the orthotic away. That nerve is on its way back.” And that was the beginning of many triumphs to come. Michael re-learned how to walk and eventually got himself back to playing his favorite sport, soccer, a year after the accident. The 15-year-old sophomore currently plays on Chatham High School’s JV soccer team and was co-captain of the freshman soccer team last year. He is a referee for Chatham United’s recreation soccer program, an active member of the St. Patrick Youth Ministry Program and is a certified life guard at Minisink Swim Club.

celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Annual Michael DiMaggio Blood Drive this month. “The community came together and supported us in a tremendous way, helping us to stay strong,” says Nicole, adding how grateful she is to her parents who moved into her home for three months to help, and Peter’s father who provided emotional support. “Michael’s recovery would not have been possible without our parents and the people of Chatham. Because they helped take care of our family, we were able to take care of Michael. The community lifted us up and carried us through.” Nicole singles out fellow Chathamite, her dear friend Rosalinda Rubio-Williams. “After an overwhelming response, Rosalinda reached out to the community for help with arranging meals, grocery shopping and carpools for our other two sons to get to school and activities while I was in

the hospital with Michael. Even Saturday morning bagel deliveries arrived at our house. Restaurants delivered meals to our house and to the hospital. The Chatham Borough Police frequently checked on us and visited Michael in the hospital. People helped out that we didn’t even know,” she says. “A couple of weeks after the accident, Rosalinda called me and said, ‘Everything is covered but people still want to help. What can I tell them?’” “I thought about how Michael received seven blood transfusions in the first 72 hours after the accident. Donated blood saved his life. If people want to help, please ask them to donate blood,” she recalls saying. Rosalinda, with the help of Michael’s Chatham United soccer team players’ mothers, organized the first Annual Michael DiMaggio Blood Drive with the American Red Cross. The first drive was such an overwhelming success, people had to be turned away because there weren’t enough Red Cross staff to handle the collection. The Red Cross has since doubled its staff that attends the drive. “The other Chatham women that help Rosalinda and Nicole run the drive each year are: Marguerite White, Melissa Fitzgerald and Michelle Clark. During last year’s drive, more than 60 pints were collected; 30 pints is considered a success. Collectively, the Annual Michael DiMaggio Red Cross Blood Drives have collected more than 200 pints of blood. One pint can save up to three lives, so that’s potentially 600

lives saved. The community is invited to come and donate at this year’s drive that will be on Sun., Dec. 9, from 10AM3PM at Chatham High School. Register at www.redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code: Stay Strong Michael. Expect holiday decorations, music and plenty of homemade treats! “It’s a cause that is near and dear to my heart. What better gift can you give than the gift of life?” she says.

Nicole, who grew up on Long Island, met her husband Peter, an engineer from Bergen County, in Manasquan in 1995. They married two years later, moved to Chatham in 1999 and started their family. Nick, 17, is a Chatham High School senior and Luke, 12, is a Chatham Middle School 7th grader. Their dog, Brooklyn, completes the family. A Chatham High School Varsity soccer player, Nick is captain of the team and is a certified soccer referee for Morris County. He has played club soccer for eight years and was named a Hawk Allstate Chatham Athlete of the Week. Nick is very active in the St. Patrick Youth Ministry Program and was a leader at one of last year’s Antioch retreats. This year, he is co-director of the Winter Antioch retreat. He also has traveled with St. Patrick parish to Appalachia, West Virginia, where he worked on the same house for two summers. Like his younger brother Michael, he is a certified lifeguard at Minisink Club.

Luke plays travel soccer with Chatham United and plays travel baseball during the spring and summer seasons. His soccer team recently played in the NJ Youth Soccer State Cup Finals, and last summer his baseball team had the thrilling experience of playing in Cooperstown, NY. Luke, along with his brothers, is an avid snowboarder—favorite spots are Mount Snow and Okemo in VT. He and his brothers also learned to surf while on vacation in Hawaii last summer. A managing director at Thornton Tomasetti, Peter’s expertise is in protective design. He works on projects all over the world, designing buildings to resist high-explosive attacks and has been involved in designing 70-80 U.S. embassies. Peter is a former two-time Men’s Soccer All-American at Columbia University where he earned two undergraduate degrees in humanities and civil engineering and a graduate degree in structural engineering. He shares his three sons’ love of soccer (he

Peter is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and also shares his boys’ passion for Fantasy Football. Nicole, who graduated from the University of Delaware, has been a K-12 substitute teacher in the School District of the Chathams for six years. She is an active volunteer in the schools and with the high school’s soccer program as well as Chatham United. A year and a half ago, Nicole decided to give back even more to the community. Nicole went to EMT School—220 hours of training which included hospital time and classroom time—and became a NJ State certified EMT with the Chatham Emergency Squad. “The Chatham Emergency Squad was there for Michael immediately when he was hurt and needed them,” she says. “It’s an incredible group of volunteers that take care of the people of Chatham. I’m so unbelievably grateful to the community for what they did for our family. I had an overwhelming desire to give back in a meaningful way.” She adds that they are always looking for new volunteers! All of our Chatham Emergency Squad members are outstanding; but, if you happen to require a visit from the Squad, try to plan it between 7PM and 7AM--when you’re most likely to see Nicole!

CHATHAM TOWNSHIP KIDS ICE SKATED EVERYWHERE Contributed by Pat Wells, Chatham Historical Society convenient. Silver Lake was a hike out of town and into Harding at the end of Dickson's Mill Road, but it was big. In her oral history for the Chatham Township Historical Society, Freda Kleider talked of skating through the bogs and swamps when it was so cold that the Great Swamp froze over, making a skating rink of many square miles.

ce skating was a favored pastime in decades past. Local ponds provided the perfect setting for a social afternoon of sport and play. The skates seen here are in the Red Brick Schoolhouse Museum. They belonged to the Knapp Brothers who lived at 154 Southern Boulevard. The big family lived in the white farmhouse that still stands in front of the ChathamSummit Friends Meeting House. Oscar, Rudolph, Fred, and Carl could have skated on the Diefenthaler's Pond at what is now 331 Lafayette or Spring Lake near the end of Pine Street. (It’s actually a pond.) For a bigger surface, they would have walked up Southern Boulevard to Noe Pond. In 1928, the residents of the Chatham Colony dug out a pool from a patch of swamp ground at the corner

of Spring Street and School Avenue. In winter it became Colony Skating Club. Bert Abbazia, who was born and raised in the Chatham Colony, recalls skating on “miles of low wetlands between Chatham Borough and Florham Park.” It was called the freshet, and resulted from the right combination of heavy rains and freezing temperatures.

In the late 1950s Archie and Emma Stiles started their ice skate exchange in Archie’s Resale Shop out in Meyersville. You could trade in your outgrown skates for a bigger pair for just $1. Kids loved visiting his magical sheds that held every kind of toy imaginable. Archie’s closed in the late 1990s when Archie was in his late 80s. The sheds, toys and skates are gone now. Today it’s hard to find a place to ice skate; but, in the old days, if it was frozen kids skated on it.

At the other end of town, at the southern end of Fairmount, the skating rink was the pond on the Fountain property, now known as the historic Johnson House, next to Esternay Field. Up near Hickory Tree, Sunset Lake made for good skating. Green Village children had several options. A pond behind DeMott's basket factory, where the firehouse now stands, was pretty

WHAT EXACTLY IS CANNABIDIOL (CBD) AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS? Contributed by Al Brown, Liberty Drug

M

any people do not know about the medicinal effects of cannabidiol (CBD), a legal, nonaddictive non-psychoactive compound that is derived from the hemp plant and found in marijuana plants that relieves pain, reduces anxiety, helps sleep, etc. CBD is one of 113 identified cannabinoids found in cannabis sativa. It does not cause a user to become high or have experiences like someone would if they took marijuana or THC. No prescription is necessary to purchase CBD. Not all CBD brands are the same, purchasers must be sure that their purchase is pharmaceutical grade from a reputable supplier. Liberty Drug, one of the first pharmacies in New Jersey to carry CBD, procures its CBD from the most pure sources and the products are free from contaminants and pesticides. They are also gluten-free, non-GMO and 100% vegan. Some of the benefits of using CBD in either oil, capsule or gummy form are relief from pain, anxiety, inflammation, stress, arthritis, PMS, digestive disorders, insomnia, seizures and headaches. The pain cream has been shown to work well in alleviating localized pain in joints and muscles. In most cases, results have been very favorable even when exposing tissue to toxic levels of chemotherapy, radiation, trauma and chemicals. Outcomes do not always provide a cure but they consistently demonstrate protected organ function, survival and improved health. The broadest benefits seem to be related to anti-inflammation. Many modern civilization conditions like pain, arthritis and neuropathy appear to be closely associated with this general process. CBD addresses all of the major constituents. It attenuates inflammatory cell migration/infiltration and the

production of inflammatory mediators. CBD all surpasses proinflammatory signaling. CBD also has been found to be a neuro-protectant. For example, it limits the neurological damage that could occur after a stroke or trauma and can be used to treat neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. The ability of CBD to reduce inflammatory markers has been shown in several experimental models. You may ask, how can one herb help so many different conditions? How can it provide both palliative and curative actions? How can it be so safe while offering such powerful effects? The search to answer these questions has led scientists to the discovery of a previously unknown physiologic system, a central component of the health and healing of every human and almost every animal: The Endocannabinoid System. This System and their receptors are found throughout the body--in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks; but, the goal is always the same: Homeostasis-the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment. Remember: If you don't take care of your body, where will you live?

ART LEAGUE OF THE CHATHAMS CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY Contributed by Ann Frommer, Art League of the Chathams

I

n 1988, the Art League of the Chathams (ALC), originally named Chatham Township Art League, grew from an idea by then Township Clerk Alice Lundt. She decided to cover the walls of the newly renovated municipal building for a dedication celebration. Her artist-friend, Janet Glover, helped in locating Township artists to participate and display their work in the halls of the new building. After the dedication, several of the exhibiting artists met to form an association. The group met Oct. 3, 1988, to formalize the organization with name, Chatham Township Art League. In 2007, the Art League voted to open its membership to include residents of Chatham Borough and renamed it the Art League of the Chathams. Several years later, the Art League expanded to include all surrounding communities. Artists and non-artists were welcome to join this growing organization. Since then, ALC has made a goal to give back to the community by continuing to fill the walls of both Chatham Borough Hall as well as the Chatham Township Municipal building. Note: As of 2010 Chatham Borough Hall, no longer participated. In 2008, ALC celebrated its 20th anniversary with a gala event. From the proceeds, the Art League began granting an annual scholarship to a Chatham High School senior.

Birch Trees

Three shows are held throughout the year at the Chatham Township Municipal building. Programs and workshops are provided for ALC members throughout the year. Art League of the Chatham's solo-featured artist in the Lundt-Glover Gallery is Betsy Mirabelli, a Chatham Borough landscape painter.

In 2009, the Lundt-Glover Gallery was created and used for member solo shows. Murals in the front hall were painted by ALC artists. ALC launched www. artleagueofthechathams.org to display the members’ artwork that also includes the calendar of events and activities. ALC publishes three newsletters per year summarizing various programs, member info, display opportunities and invitations to the holiday party and the spring picnic.

Artists that painted murals that illustrated the Great Swamp and the changing of seasons: Frank McDonough, Ed Schuh, Rosemary Howlett and Celecte Fondaco 12 | Chatham Living

The ALC will hold its Winter Show that will run from Sun., Dec. 9, through midMarch. The Winter Show will kick off with a reception that is free and open to the public on Sun., Dec. 9, from 2-4 PM at the Chatham Township Municipal building. The event will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Art League of the Chathams. Refreshments will be served. Artists will display their wares in a boutique. The solo-featured artist in the Lundt-Glover Gallery is Betsy Mirabeli, a Chatham Borough landscape painter. For more information about the ALC, visit www.ArtLeagueOfTheChathams.org.

HELP BUILD THE COMMUNITY YOU LIVE IN By Janice Piccolo, Borough of Chatham director of community services

C

ommitting to advanced training and knowledge to help others during times of crisis or personal property loss from fire; Applying acquired professional experiences to maintain the culture of Chatham; Protecting the community’s public health; Enhancing Chatham’s environmental surroundings and public land; Or being a part of Chatham’s public event steering committees and beautification projects. The common denominator for the tasks above is volunteerism. Most communities thrive from dedicated residents, business owners and commercial and private property owners willing to give time and talent to the community in which they live and work--shaping that community into an even more ideal location to reside, visit and conduct business.

Public Safety: Chatham Emergency Squad Chatham Fire Department Boards/Commissions Board of Health Planning Board Zoning Board of Adjustment Environmental Commission Historic Preservation Commission Shade Tree Commission

Studies show Volunteerism improves health by strengthening the body, improving mood, and lessening stress in participants. Those who volunteer regularly have a 27% better chance of gaining employment.

Borough Advisory Committees

According to the Department of Labor Statistics, individuals between the ages of 35 and 54 are the most likely to volunteer their time.

Civilian Emergency Response Team (CERT)

As Municipal budgets shrink and demand for high quality services remain, volunteers play an integral role in assisting the Mayor, Borough Council (also volunteers) and the professional staff maintaining the quality of life that the residents of Chatham Borough enjoy.

Community Garden

On Jan. 7, at 7:30 PM in Borough Hall’s Council Chambers, the governing body will appoint, acknowledge and nominate community volunteers as it does at each year's reorganization meeting. You, too, could be mentioned as an esteemed community supporter--so heed Benjamin Franklin’s spirit, in 1736, who started the first worldwide volunteer-run firehouse, The Union Fire Company; or become a sustaining member of a group that holds personal interest for you. Volunteer now! Or start the New Year in 2019 with a personal plan to include volunteerism in the community, with whatever small or large time commitment you may be willing to share with your town! Butterfly, as her name indicates, is a gentle soul. She is gentle with kids, gentle with other dogs, walks gently on a leash – a complete sweetheart who would love to become your soulmate.

Lucky is a sweet-natured MUSH (who also happens to be very photogenic)! He is affectionate and craves human companionship. Imagine this guy in your lap! Visit St. Hubert’s today to foster or adopt him.

Toby is a playful and vocal fellow (he loves to talk!) who came to us via Puerto Rico. He’s been at St. Hubert’s and a partner shelter since Hurricane Maria last October and he really deserves to spend this fall in his new adoptive or foster home.

If you’re looking for a playmate for your active dog then Grey is the guy for you. Grey LOVES to play with other dogs – dog playtime is his favorite part of the day at St. Hubert’s. He also loves to play with humans and enjoys nothing more (aside from playing with dogs) than a long walk. He would do great as a solo dog as well and his short-term foster home said he was a wonderful houseguest. 16 | Chatham Living
