Our August cover story is about the Moskowitz family. Dan is a founder of Chatham Wealth Management, a boutique investment firm in the borough. An active community volunteer, Dan is a well-known baseball and football coach. Turn to page 6 to find out more. On page 10, our Expert Contributor NJ Advanced Acupuncture penned an informative piece on how acupuncture can be the solution to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. At the 23rd annual Excellence in Emergency Medical Services award celebration dinner, Christine Grobert of the Chatham Emergency Squad (CES) was recognized for outstanding dedication to the squad and her commitment to the community of Chatham. This prestigious award is given annually by Overlook Medical Center to a certified member of the squad whose professionalism, dedication and efforts go above and beyond the call of duty. Page 11 has a celebration of Christine who is also a beloved 4th grade teacher at Lafayette Avenue School.

Chatham Living's beautiful cover photos are taken by Chatham resident Christine Loy. Meet the wonderful and talented Christine in "Ten Questions" on page 12. Seven-year-old Rowan Cashin is the first Chatham Cub Scout to compete at the Boy Scouts of America Pinewood Derby World Championship competition. Read all about it and see Rowan with his camouflage-painted car on page 19. I couldn't resist sharing this photo that you see on the right. My husband Tim and our three kids took a couple of days to go camping in the Adirondacks. I was alone. But not really. Hannah, our cat, and Oreo, our dog, stayed with me. As I made a scallop and veggie dinner for myself on the first night and set the table for one, Oreo took a seat…and I fed my perfect dinner guest lots of peanut butter treats! Enjoy the last days of summer! Stacey and John Table for two?

MEET THE MOSKOWITZ FAMILY By Stacey McEvoy

D

Photos by Christine Loy Photography and courtesy of the Moskowitz family an and Jenny Moskowitz, who met in Manhattan after they graduated from college, are celebrating their silver wedding anniversary this year as well as their 25th year living in Chatham Borough where they raised two children. Their daughter Megan, 23, lives in Manhattan after graduating from University of Arizona in 2018. She works in the city in media buying at advertising media giant GroupM. Their son Rob, 21, is interning at Prudential for the summer, and will start his senior year at Indiana University in the fall. Koda, a 2-year-old rescue dog, completes the family. Dan and Jenny both work in Chatham— she from home as a consultant to the media industry and he, a certified financial planner, as president and chief investment officer of Chatham Wealth Management (www.ChathamWealth.com), a boutique investment firm tucked away in a pretty section off Main Street behind Serenade restaurant, that he founded 19 years ago with his stepfather. “I never thought I would be doing this, but it made sense for both of us,” says Dan, sharing that in 1998 his stepfather who ran a wealth management business asked if he would join him in a potential partnership. The men agreed on an 18-month trial—by 2000, Chatham Wealth Management was formed. Four years later, his stepfather retired. The firm specializes in investment management and financial/retirement planning for their clients. Chatham Wealth Management’s staff consists of six other employees, two of whom also live in Chatham. The firm’s portfolio managers have an average of 25 years of investment management experience. It can’t get much better than a five minute commute to work. Dan, who worked in institutional fixed income 6 | Chatham Living

at the former Bankers Trust Company, spent his first 10 years in Chatham traveling to Manhattan--needless to say he was happy to give up that part of his day. A great added benefit to working close to home? It’s given him the flexibility to be able to participate in plenty of community volunteer activities. Over the years, lots of Chatham boys have known Dan as “Coach.” For more than 10 years, he coached youth baseball and football when his son played. Even after Rob graduated from youth sports to play ball at the high school, Dan continued to coach the 5th-8th grade age groups. And, now, he is coaching some of those boys as teenagers. After Rob graduated from Chatham High School a few years ago, Dan had the honor of being asked to join the CHS coaching squad. He’s an assistant coach for the Chatham High School varsity team. He is responsible for the defensive line. But he hasn’t left the younger guys behind—he currently serves on the Chatham Youth Football Board. Dan’s other volunteer activities in Chatham have included eight years on the joint recreation committee of the Chathams and six years as a board

member of the Chatham Fish & Game Swim, Racquet & Social Club. An avid golfer, he is currently in his fourth year on the board at Fairmount Country Club. Dan’s firm makes it a priority to be an active and supportive member of the Chatham community. Chatham Wealth Management has been a sponsor for the Chatham Education Foundation, the Chatham High School Athletic Boosters, the Chatham High School Baseball and Basketball teams, the Chatham High School Fashion Show, and recently they sponsored camp scholarships at the Madison Area YMCA. Chatham Wealth Management also is one of the local businesses who participates in Chatham High School’s thriving Senior Internship Program, which is directed by Chatham High School teacher Sally Simonfay. Senior students report to their internship 25 hours per week during the last five weeks of school. For the last seven years, Chatham Wealth Management has provided an opportunity for our high school students to get some hands-on experience in the investment and financial planning world to see if the industry might be of interest to them. Each year, two students join the staff of Chatham Wealth Management to soak it all in, experience working in the environment and ask questions. “They help out at the office, listen in on calls, sit in on staff meetings, work on spreadsheet projects and observe, says Dan, noting that the high school’s program has really grown. “When it first started, 50 kids

participated in it, he says. Now, more than 200 students accept internships each year. A typical day for Dan starts at 6 a.m. sitting at Chatham’s Drip drinking coffee and reading the news for an hour before heading a short distance to his office further down Main Street. The best part of living in Chatham? “It’s the people, says Dan. Who can argue with that? Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? ACUPUNCTURE CAN BE THE SOLUTION TO CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME Contributed by Morgan Reade, NJ Advanced Acupuncture

M

ost people’s jobs involve repetitive movements of the hands and wrists--for example typing for hours on a computer. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, or CTS, is caused by constant strain or pressure on the median nerve. Symptoms of CTS include tingling in the hands or wrists, sharp pain, numbness and decreased movement. This condition can take years to develop. Acupuncture is extremely effective at treating carpal tunnel syndrome, eliminating the need for anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery. Recent studies suggest that acupuncture is more effective than corticosteroids when it comes to treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Acupuncture, an ancient technique of TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine, has long been used to treat chronic pain. In acupuncture, fine needles are placed in specific points along the forearm, wrist and hand. Studies from Harvard Medical School suggested that all people in the study who were in pain from CTS experienced reduction of pain and numbness after acupuncture sessions. Applying suction cups, cold laser or massage are other techniques used to increase blood flow to the area, relieving pain and pressure.

A

®

By Craig Alperowitz, Chatham Emergency Squad t the 23rd annual Excellence in Emergency Medical Services award celebration dinner held at the Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kennilworth, Christine Grobert of the Chatham Emergency Squad (CES) was recognized for outstanding dedication to the squad and her commitment to the community of Chatham. This prestigious award is given annually by Overlook Medical Center, an affiliation of the Atlantic Health System, to a certified member of the squad whose professionalism, dedication and efforts go above and beyond the call of duty. In addition to her length of service and dedication to the Chatham community, Grobert’s exceptional blend of patient care skills and knowledge, leadership and teamwork and a calm demeanor in times of crisis made her a stand-out choice among the members of the Chatham Emergency Squad. “Patients areimmediately reassured in Christine’s presence and team members flourish under her guidance” said Evan Skinner, President of the Chatham Emergency Squad. “We are thrilled to honor her – not just for her many years of service and dedication, but for continuing to serve as a role model and resource for current and future EMTs to become their best.”

10 QUESTIONS WITH. . . . CHRISTINE LOY

T

By Chatham Living

his month, our "10 Questions" is with Chatham Living's photographer Christine Loy who is a photographer specializing in family and children’s portraits, corporate headshots, and event photography. She previously worked in sales for Continental Airlines and sometimes misses carrying her passport in her purse “just in case.” Christine, her husband Warren, and their three children live in Chatham Twp with their chocolate lab, Taco. For more about Christine's photography, please visit christineloyphotography.com. What is your favorite part about being Chatham Living's photographer?

I love meeting all of the different families. There are so many great stories and causes that I've learned about. We have such a wonderful town filled with incredibly generous people. What got you into photography?

Since I was a kid I had an interest in photography and a particular appreciation for film’s ability to hold on to a moment in time to reflect back on weeks or even generations later. I took photography classes in college at St. Peter’s and additional specialty classes at School of Visual Arts. But what really got me started professionally was my best friend who needed regular headshots with no real budget. Now she flies back from LA for them. What kind of photography do you do for local clients? I concentrate on portraits of all types, ranging from babies and families to real estate agents, performers and professional headshots. I also work directly with companies building or redoing their websites looking for a full office headshot session. What’s the process to work with you? Check out my website www.christineloyphotography.com, see if my work is the aesthetic you’re looking for and shoot me an email. I like to chat before confirming a booking so we’re on the same page before the shoot. How do people contact you? The best way to reach me is the contact me form on my website www.christineloyphotography.com/contact-me or by email at christineloyphotography@gmail.com

What's a perfect day in Chatham for you? I'd start with a stroll through the farmers market followed by a dip with my husband and kids at Colony Pool, dinner at Mitsuba and wrap up the day playing softball on Memorial Field with the women's softball league. What are your hobbies? Gardening, cooking (more like a full time job with three kids), decorating, softball, traveling, stand up paddling and kayaking. If you were shipped to a deserted island for six months, what album would you bring? Probably Regina Spektor's 'Begin to Hope' or Portraiture's ‘Cruel Yellow’ What's your favorite app, Instagram or Marco Polo? My best friends who live around the country and I have a Marco Polo group that is an instant laugh every time a new video comes in. Where is the most interesting place you have visited? India might be the most interesting place I’ve visited with its bustling cities and chaotic traffic patterns. And I have yet to sit on another beach where a cow strolled past. Thailand is probably my favorite place I’ve visited though. I worked in sales for Continental (and United) Airlines for many years and my husband and I were fortunate to travel to so many different places around the world.

If you’re looking to add a furry feline family member to your home, look no further than this handsome cat Gary. At 8 years old, he is a lounging couch potato who would love to find a home where he can continue his expert cat naps and snuggle sessions. He would do great in a home with other pets or as a single cat. Gary is available for adoption at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison.

Peter is a 10 year old Parson Russell Terrier. He was one of the 188 dogs rescued from a property earlier this Summer in Hunterdon Couty. Upon arrival we discovered he is blind, which simply makes him extra special. This affectionate dog is looking for a quiet home who will spoil him the way he deserves. Come meet him at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison.

WHERE DO YOU START?

Catalina is a lovable, goofy 5 year old dog looking to find a home of her own. She is a wonderful companion who is up for just about anything- she loves being outside and showing off her playful side, but is also content snuggling up and relaxing with her favorite humans. Catalina is available for adoption at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison.

Boris is his name… and playing with all sorts of toys is his game! This sweet 4 year old boy loves to play and is all purrs when getting head scratches. This poor kitty was found with a severe tail injury before coming to St. Hubert’s for care, which we eventually needed to amputate. We also discovered he is FIV+, meaning he has feline immunodeficiency virus. Cats with this can live long, happy lives when in a healthy environment and with regular vet checkups. They can even live with other cats who don’t have FIV, as long as they get along! He hasn’t let his ordeals in life get him down… his spirit has been loving and bright the entire time he’s been with us. Boris is available for adoption at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison. Chatham Living would like to thank Freshpet for their sponsorship of St. Hubert’s Adopt-A-Pet.

BUTTERFLIES, MOTHS AND CHATHAM TOWNSHIP: LINCOLN BROWER 1931-2018

L

Contributed by Roz Mytelka, Chatham Township Historical Society incoln Brower, foremost expert on monarch butterflies, grew up in Chatham Township. He was the younger brother of former Mayor and Committee Member Bailey Brower. He was raised in the large family homestead that included dairying and rose-growing operations. According to Brower, he learned scientific method and discipline from his grandfather, Louis M. Noe, who grew roses. He Lincoln Brower with milkweed for was also influenced by monarchs in his garden in Virginia, 2011. Charles Rummel, a German (Courtesy of his wife, Dr. Linda Fink). immigrant in Green Village, who collected butterflies and moths in the Great Swamp. Brower would accompany him through the Swamp to his traps, baited with beer, molasses and rum to investigate the trapped insects. Brower said he became interested in butterflies and moths at the age of 7. At 16, he knew he wanted to study biology. A graduate of Chatham High School, he received a BA from Princeton University and a PhD from Yale. He was a Fulbright scholar at Oxford. Brower spent six decades studying the monarch butterfly and urging actions to protect it. He was the founder of the field of Chemical Ecology. His research led him to analyze the relationship of toxic butterflies to their food plant. Monarch butterflies are for the most part not eaten by birds. The butterflies eat milkweed exclusively during their caterpillar stage. He proved that the toxicity of the monarchs was derived from natural chemicals in the milkweed plant. Most of us are familiar with the migration pattern of the monarchs. During the summer three generations live and die, but when the summer ends, a fourth generation makes the huge migration. Until 1975, no one knew where the monarchs went. Then it was discovered that they flew by the billions to a 30 by 70 mile area in northern Mexico. After this discovery, Brower worked in the overwintering sites in Mexico and the emphasis

of his career shifted toward monarch conservation. He was instrumental in the creation of sanctuaries for the overwintering monarchs. Also, more broadly, he was concerned about the use of herbicides which result in limited biological diversity. He appeared on television and made eight films to alert the public to threats to Charles Rummel of Green Village, the monarch butterfly and the mentor to young butterfly and moth enthusiasts. (Courtesy of Chatham environment.

Township Historical Society)

Brower taught at Amherst and the University of Florida and was a research professor at Sweet Briar College when he died. He published 167 peer-reviewed articles. He received many awards and honors, including the Linnean Medal. A prominent scientist from Chatham Township! Would you like to learn more about Dr. Brower and monarchs, check out this Youtube video: https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=g8Vrzd_SvTc. ART LEAGUE OF THE CHATHAMS HAPPENINGS Contributed by Ann Frommer, Art League of the Chathams

R

ecent Chatham High School graduate Hannah Wetter was selected as the Art League of the Chathams scholarship recipient in 2019.

Hannah is enrolled in the Mason Gross School of the Arts for visual art at Rutgers University and was accepted in the Honors College. She will be pursuing a degree in Art & Design. Her love of art was realized at an early age and encouraged by art teachers in middle school. She later studied with Philla Barkhorn, a Chatham artist and member of the Art League of the Chathams. Hannah uses trains in many of her pieces. "In my concentration, I used trains and associated train imagery as a vehicle to examine human expression--community, isolation, love, and tragedy. Trains were appropriate for this purpose, as they are public spaces that still maintain a semblance of intimacy and privacy. I also researched different instances of how and where trains have been used throughout history to further an understanding of human cultures, and some of the effects of industrialization"--Hannah Wetter Hannah Wetter (Courtesy of the Art League of the Chathams)

T

he Art League of the Chathams Fall exhibit will be a solo show of paintings by Berkeley Heights resident Debora Thedinga. The exhibit NJ & Beyond-Landscape Paintings will open with a reception 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 at the Lundt-Glover Gallery and run through December 3.. Debora’s paintings primarily focus on scenes from her home state of New Jersey and the surrounding areas. Her rich, impressionistic paintings depict familiar motifs of human design that establish a link between nostalgia and the landscape’s reality. Whether completed in her studio or on location (en plein air), Debora pushes herself to create pieces that evoke a mood that resonates with the viewer.

“Painting images on a small scale is both challenging and rewarding," says Debora. "The challenge is to use color, value, and light in a way that allows an expansive vista to be viewed successfully through a small window. The creation of a mood that transports the viewer through this tiny porthole and into the landscape is the ultimate reward.” Debora studied art at Glassboro State College and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Besides painting, she works at Governor Livingston High school as an Educational Sign Language Interpreter. Her sharp observation skills and talent for visual explanation plays a key role in her ability to successfully provide American Sign Language/English interpretations for students and teachers. The Art League of the Chathams also features its strolling gallery, displaying art of its member artists. Art is available for sale. The building is handicapped accessible and exhibition is free and open to the public. For more information, call 973-635-0845. Visit www. ArtLeagueOfTheChathams.org.

ROWAN CASHIN: FIRST CHATHAM CUB SCOUT TO COMPETE IN THE PINEWOOD DERBY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

S

By Chatham Living

even-year-old Rowan Cashin is the first Chatham Cub Scout to compete at the Boy Scouts of America Pinewood Derby World Championship competition. The Milton Avenue rising 2nd grader, a member of Cub Scout Pack 8, which is part of Boy Scout Troop 8 at Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church, fashioned his car out of the small standard block of wood provided by the Boy Scouts of America by cutting his block in half into a wedge shape and painting it camouflage--his favorite color. He also glued some nuts to the

bottom for weight--making sure he didn't go over the competition's 5-ounce restriction. "The car was a little feeble to pick up but on the track it was surprisingly fast," said Rowan's dad, Tommy, who noted that he helped his son handle the saw to make the cuts. "But the design, look, and most of the execution was all him." On Pinewood Derby race day in January at Ogden, Rowan's parents and 5-yearold sister Marlowe all wore camouflage in solidarity. A Tiger Scout, the youngest age group of the pack, Rowan won first place in his den, and 4th overall in his pack. Winning in his den qualified him for the regional races in Morris Plains in April at the Fishawack District of the Boy Scouts of America where he placed 3rd in his age group. Other scouts from the pack also competed but Rowan was the only Chatham scout to trophy in the regional competition, which qualified him for the

Pinewood Derby World Championship in June in Manhattan that hosted scouts from all over the country as well as Europe and Japan. Although he didn’t place, he had a great time at the races. Rowan was accompanied to the World Championship by his parents, Marlowe, Nanny and Grandpa who came from Boston, Mama and Papa who came from Brooklyn, and his dad's aunt Sister Mary Ann of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
