Dear Residents, We all go through rough patches at some point or another, some worse than others - sadly tough times can happen at any time. For Charles Jijon and his family, that came in September of 2015 when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while out for a bike ride. The good news is that after multiple surgeries, a month long stay in the hospital and a lot of rehabilitation, he made a full recovery two years later.

Charles’s family story is really about how to handle this type of situation – so much so that he even wrote a book about it Titanium: The Path to Recovery. The preface of his book reads in part: “One thought struck me: so many of us have no idea what awaits us in the aftermath of a major accident or trauma. As both actor and observer, there were so many lessons I wanted to share: about preparation, resilience, and the medical-insurance complex.” Read on…and check out Charles’s website. This section includes a musing about his interactions with his daughter that are really fantastic: https://charlesjijon.com/author Bill Switzler, owner of Alpine Tree, and his wife, Vanessa, both grew up in Chatham! Check out a Business Profile about them on page 10, and check out their website at http://alpinetreellc.com With our August issue we are very proud to be working with St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison launching an Adopt-A-Pet section that will be appearing every month in Chatham Living. As many of you may, know St. Hubert’s provides a variety of community services including pet adoption, humane education, a pet food pantry, low-cost spay/neuter of community cats, a pet helpline and a professional education series. Several dogs and cats ready for adoption now! See page 18. Be sure to check out www.chathamlivingnj.com where you can read the magazine online!

RESIDENT FEATURE

MEET THE JIJON FAMILY By Stacey McEvoy Photos by Oijoy Photography

C

harles Jijon, an avid bicycle rider and skier, was struck by a hit-and-run driver while out for a bike ride under sunny blue skies in September 2015. Over the years, he had his fair share of wipe outs on the paths and on the slopes but none of those would prepare him for what happened on one of his usual bike routes through Summit and Short Hills. Charles was catapulted 4 | Chatham Living

across the hood of the driver’s car and left where he landed on the overpass that bridges above Rt. 24 near Hobart Avenue in Summit, with serious injuries to his legs. Under the care of his physicians and with the support of his wife, Irene, and their daughter, Cathryn, as well as family, friends and neighbors in Chatham, Charles made a full recovery in the span of two years that included a month-long stay in the hospital for multiple surgeries, a stay at a rehabilitation center and intense physical therapy to learn to walk again. Charles tells his story of recovery that followed, through the help given by his family, friends and community, and the life lessons he learned along the way about preparation, resilience and the complicated web of medical insurance claims in his memoir Titanium: The Path to Recovery.

“I learned the value of community,” says Charles, who acknowledges that the Chatham community rallied around him and his family to get them through the difficult time. “It’s important to be part of a community because recovery is not a solo event. In the U.S., we are not culturally wired to ask for help—but when something happens to you, everyone around you feels it. It’s natural for people to want to help. You have to make it easy for them to help you,” he notes, adding that the genesis of his book came about from speaking with other accident victims at Morristown Medical Center during his stays at the hospital and follow-up appointments. He came to realize that many people are unprepared and don’t know what to do in the face of an unexpected catastrophic event. He made it his mandate that through his book, he would help others who might have the misfortune of going through a traumatic injury. “The book is an encouraging story that shows we all need help from time to time. Something like this can happen to anyone,” says Irene, sharing how she asked people to do things that were simple—but extremely helpful to the couple. “It’s as simple as asking someone to pick up food for your dog,” she says. “People want to help.” “On the practical side, dealing with insurance companies after an injury is very complex,” says Charles, who had 140 claims with his auto insurance company and 100 claims with his health insurance company in the aftermath of the accident. “You have to be on top of all of it keeping track with spreadsheets and not letting it get out of hand,” he says. Irene is quick to add, “You always have to ask lots of questions. And, although you might get frustrated, you have to be polite—the rule of making it easier for people to help you would apply here too.” Charles and Irene, who were married more than 30 years ago, moved to Chatham in 1990 from Forest Hills, Queens. Their daughter, Cathryn, 24, graduated from Chatham High School where she played field hockey, ran food drives for a food pantry and visited the local assisted living facility to spread some sunshine. The University of Chicago graduate now lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and works in finance. She will be a Fulbright Scholar in Ecuador for 10 months starting in the fall.

to help organize after-school enrichment programs. Charles, who is a program manager for a tech company that does global translation services, coached Cathryn’s sports teams when she was little and was a member of the Chatham Millburn Short Hills Rotary Club. He is currently a member of the Morris Toastmasters whom he says were also a great support during his recovery.

Irene works in Business to Business marketing for a tech company. As Cathryn progressed through the district’s schools, Irene spent time volunteering

Charles is often asked if he harbors anger about the accident and the subsequent two-year recovery, but Charles’s reckoning is insightful.

“Sure, you could be angry—but anger can’t be your dominant force because your job is to recover. Resentment will impede recovery,” says an impassioned Charles. “We can tell our own stories. I could look at it as horrible luck or I could look at it that people caught me…and people did catch me. They stopped. They called my wife. They brought me a blanket to wrap around me as we waited for the ambulance and police. My doctors were great. My family and Irene’s family were amazing and so were our friends and neighbors. People really did come through for me.” August 2018 | 5

RESIDENT FEATURE Charles is back riding his bike under sunny blue skies. He took his first ride 22 months after the accident, albeit a short one for him. But he did it. Then, two days before the anniversary of his accident, he kept a promise to himself that he would take the ride through Summit and Short Hills that he never got to finish. Charles called his good friend, Bill, who, with his wife, Carmen, had spent many days after the accident at the hospital with Charles and Irene. Charles and Bill cycled through the intersection of Hobart Avenue and Route 24 where the accident occurred, sailed through the picturesque streets of Summit and Short Hills and back into Chatham where they rolled victoriously into Charles’s driveway. Closure and a new beginning. Charles’s story came full circle and he told it his way. Check out his website www.charlesjijon. com where you can read the first chapter of Titanium: The Path to Recovery for free. P.S. Charles plans to hit the slopes this winter! We would like to thank Salerno Duane Inc. in Summit for bringing you this month’s cover story.

HISTORY OF COLONY POOL Contributed by Pat Wells, Chatham Township Historical Society

C

olony Pool has an interesting history. It started out as a muddy spring-fed pond with swampy edges. The earliest owners were the Dickinson family who lived in Chatham from before the Revolution until 1880. In the mid-1920s, the land belonged to Webster and Jennie Estes, who sold the pond and about 150 acres of land to the Chatham Colony Association. This was a group of Russian and Eastern European immigrants from New York City who wanted to create a rural community. The land was divided into lots and purchased by individual members. The Association laid out roads, created the water system, and built a community house. The Community House was near the corner of Spring and School Streets and overlooked the pond. The pond was first used by the Colonists as a fishing hole. It was a great source

of entertainment for the Colony’s kids, who discovered frogs, turtles and other wildlife among the cattails in the shallow water. Some of the kids built a canoe that was shared by the community. In 1928 the pond was dredged to create a pool. A 165-foot wall was built at one end to create a deep end. The other three sides were left in their natural state. The bottom was mud and the visibility in the water was about 12 inches. It was a glorified swimming hole. The muck that was dredged out of the pond was used as rich topsoil in local gardens and even sold for a profit. Four acres of land around the pond were fenced in to create the pool grounds. A bathhouse was built, but the bathroom was still an outhouse on the hill behind the Community House. Over the years, improvements were made and a sand bottom and beaches were

added as well as bathrooms. The first life guard was hired in 1943. The big-hearted Colonists hired an out-of-work member to fill the position. Luckily, there were no rescues needed that summer as the life guard did not know how to swim. Town residents were able to purchase a “social membership” to the pool, and guests of Colony members were charged a small fee to swim. At the end of each summer, the Colony Association donated the pool profits to non-profit organizations. Among the recipients were the fire department, veterans groups, athletic leagues and Overlook Hospital. By the mid-1960s many of the original Colonists had passed away and most of their children had moved away. The remaining members decided it was time to dissolve the Colony Association. In 1969 they sold Colony Pool to the Township of Chatham for $100,000 which was a bargain price. Township residents have been enjoying the pool ever since.

BUSINESS PROFILE

ALPINE TREE, LLC By Stacey McEvoy

B

ill Switzler, the owner of Alpine

Tree, LLC, and his wife, Vanessa, grew up in Chatham. After graduating from Chatham High School, they left to pursue college degrees—she at New York University and he at Rutgers University. The couple married and moved back to the area 10 years ago, most recently to Convent Station. Having worked at a local tree company during high school and college winter and summer breaks, Bill gained experience and an expertise in the tree industry. After starting Alpine Tree with a friend a decade ago, Bill eventually bought out the business to become the sole owner in 2011 at which time he successfully completed the exam to become a Certified Arborist. Shortly after, Bill and Alpine Tree acquired licensure and registration with the State of New Jersey, a state requirement that went into effect last year. Alpine Tree is also a member of the Board of Tree Experts New Jersey and is recognized as a TCIA Voice of Tree Care company. Alpine Tree is a leader in the industry for tree removals, pruning and stump grinding. Preventative maintenance through regularly

0

scheduled trimming and assessments for disease is the best way to keep trees not only healthy and beautiful, but safe from potential storm damage that could cause significant property damage and leave yards looking like disaster areas. Bill and his team can identify if a tree is a candidate for removal. If it is, the company will remove the tree with state-of-theart equipment ensuring that no damage is done to the surrounding foliage and leaves the homeowner’s yard in the best shape possible.

Additionally, Alpine Tree provides competitively priced land clearing services to both local residential customers and commercial customers all over the state of New Jersey. The company works on commercial construction projects, and residential building projects providing lot clearing and preparation, land leveling and tree and shrub removal services. Alpine Tree offers professional snow removal for businesses throughout New Jersey at affordable prices, using modern equipment that can handle the worst that winter serves up. Snow removal is provided 24 hours a day.

Stumps in yards can be an unsightly leftover after a tree is cut down. They not only get in the way, they make a lawn look unattractive. Alpine Tree offers stump grinding and removal services for stumps both large and small.

A fully insured company with 24 hours a day seven days a week availability, Alpine Tree, LLC, www.alpinetreellc.com services Madison, Chatham, Summit, Morristown, Morris Plains, Morris Township, Mendham, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Basking Ridge, Bernardsville, Florham Park, Whippany, East Hanover, Morris County, Union County, and Essex County. The company provides free estimates. Call 973-964-7798 to book an appointment.

Alpine Tree also provides tree planting services. The company can help choose the right trees for a homeowner’s property. Offering a myriad of benefits, trees naturally cool and shade yards, lower energy bills, add privacy, provide more fresh oxygen/ cleaner air on property, help slow the rain impact which prevents flooding and enhances a property’s curb appeal and value. Alpine Tree can also transplant existing trees around the property or transfer trees from one property to another or on the same property if a tree is not in an ideal growing spot. Transplanting is a precise process best completed by a knowledgeable tree care professional which will ensure fast growth and longterm survival. Bill says the company’s success is due, in part, to word-of-mouth referrals from neighbors, friends and customers in the community. Vanessa, whose family owned Novalis Roofing Co., for 40 years before her father’s retirement last year, says that she and Bill have reconnected with high school friends who have also moved back to the area to raise their families. Bill, Vanessa and their three daughters who are 8,4 and 2 are getting ready to welcome a fourth child in August.

Proudly serving Chatham and Morris County for over 10 years.

EMBRACING THE FALL Contributed by Susan Cohan, APLD susancohangardens.com

J

ust in time for August vacation is also the time to plan your fall garden and containers. Autumn in the garden and larger landscape is so much more than just a show of foliage and the ubiquitous cushion mums and ornamental cabbages. Your gardens and pots can stand out from the crowd with just a little bit of effort and planning. Many, many plants put on a show of bloom and foliage as the weather cools and the days get shorter. The fall garden season officially starts in August and continues through Thanksgiving. Not just evergreen, there are some fantastic, easy, deer resistant plants to add a longer season of interest. Fall can be its own showy season with a bit of knowledge and perseverance. Perennial ornamental grasses come into their own from August to October and are reliable performers with just minimum upkeep. They are reliably deer resistant and carefree. Some worthy, non-invasive grasses for full sun are our native Panicums – Switch grass as well as smaller grasses like Seselaria autumnalis – Autumn Moor grass. Got shade? Try Korean Feather Reed grass - Calamagrostis brachytricha or one of the Japanese Forest grasses – Hakonechloa spp. Leave them standing until late next February to create winter interest and in some cases food sources for over wintering birds. Grasses add soft structure, texture and movement to any garden but they need to be divided every few years to keep them vigorous and to size. Most don’t need a lot of water. If you see your grasses are ‘empty’ at their centers it’s time to divide. The simplest method to divide them is to dig the entire clump and use a old saw to divide each plant into sections—their roots are tough. Each plant may yield

Aster x frikartii Monch

three or four smaller ones so replant those you want and share the rest with other gardeners. Late season bloomers can also extend the season. Try Anemone japonica - Japanese Anemone varieties for part shade and ample bloom. In pinks and whites, their profusion of flowers attracts pollinators. There are many varieties of native Goldenrods – Solidago ssp. that add beautiful texture and bright color to perennial borders along with varieties of Helianthus which are related to sunflowers but not as tall. Asters are the queens of the fall garden and their blue and purple flowers create an excellent counterpoint to the autumn’s yellows and oranges. They also provide pollinators with late season sustenance and are an important player in their winter survival.

Callicarpa americana berries

Several shrubs have showy autumnal bloom, berries or foliage. Our native Callicarpa americana or Beautyberry’s graceful, arching stems support clusters of bright purple berries starting in September. For foliage, nothing beats Fothergilla gardenii. Its scarlet foliage is brighter than most maples and starts just as many other deciduous shrubs have lost their leaves. CHATHAM MADISON B.I.G. (BELIEVE INSPIRE GROW) WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT GROUP Contributed by Chatham/Madison B.I.G. Chapter

O

nce every month, a group of women in our community with diverse backgrounds and interests, come together with one common purpose: to support each other in their journeys to evolve and achieve their unique personal and professional goals and aspirations. B.I.G. (Believe Inspire Grow), a women’s empowerment group, was founded by Tara Gilvar, a Bernarsdville resident, in 2009. She was inspired by a bumper sticker with the words, “Remember who you wanted to be?” She emailed her friends with the subject line, “We are still smart,” and 40 women showed up in her living room. Since then, B.I.G. touched the lives of more than 3,000 women across 75 towns in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. B.I.G. exists to help women unlock their true potential and live the lives they are meant to live. By providing the inspiration, tools and community to help women every day become the best versions of themselves, B.I.G. creates safe environments and offers face-to-face support from a like-minded tribe of peers. The fundamental belief in every B.I.G. chapter (called PODs) is that every woman has special gifts and talents, and that the power of a community of women working together is an unstoppable force in making the world a better place. The B.I.G. Chatham/Madison POD, comprised of 25 women from our community, gets together one Friday a month at the Chatham Methodist Church. In a typical meeting, women will have the opportunity to connect with one another, learn more about their aspirations and businesses, and discuss a current challenge there are experiencing, all in a supportive environment. 16 | Chatham Living

In mostly every meeting, a guest speaker shares her expertise on a certain educational topic. Such expert-led presentations include business-relevant content, as well as personal growth, wellness and self-care discussions. The group is comprised of women of all ages and backgrounds: stay at home moms looking for their next step in their careers and professions, women exploring a business idea and small business owners. The women-owned businesses in the group tap into a broad range of industries including: handmade gifts and jewelry store; fitness center; boutique travel agency; website that connects local teens with employers; marketing company; licensed social worker; dry cleaning company; digital marketing strategist; personal and home care products representative; mortgage loan office; realtors; life and holistic health coaches; custom photography editing and design studio, among others. The organization supports women business owners beyond its regular monthly meeting in our town. In addition to encouraging its members to “POD-hop,” which refers to the habitual practice of participating in B.I.G. meetings hosted in other towns, the organization is currently planning a regional Fall Expo to be hosted in Chatham, open to visitors from the community in general, and during which its women will proudly display their products and services. Guests are welcome to experience their first B.I.G. meeting www.BelieveInspireGrow.com at no cost. Explore this women empowerment organization by joining a future meeting, or receive more information about the Fall Expo by contacting the B.I.G. Chatham/Madison POD co-leaders: Valeria Aloe (valeria@believeinspiregrow.com) or Cathy Maloney (cmaloney1@verizon.net).

St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center provides services that support the human-animal bond and seeks to foster an environment in which people respect all living creatures. Learn how you can volunteer, foster, donate, and adopt at sthuberts.org. You can meet and adopt any of the following animals at our Madison Campus, 575 Woodland Avenue.

Our splendid senior, Betsy. Betsy is 12 years of age and entered our shelter severely matted. She was shaved and cleaned up allowing her to don a series of adorable coats. Despite her age she is spunky and full of life. She also loves to lay on laps – anyone, anywhere, anytime! Betsy is also good with cats and dogs and would make a great addition to a multi-pet home.

Dulce

Meet Dulce and Bello, Mutt and Jeff in feline form, weighing 16 and 5 pounds respectively. They were surrendered Bello to our organization and are tremendously bonded. They reside in one of our free-roaming rooms and can usually be found cuddled together. Bello and Dulce are nine years old and looking to live out their golden years together. They get along with other cats and love people as much as each other.

Buck is one particularly handsome fellow! He’s a six year old mixed breed who has a unique look to match is wonderful personality. He loves people, loves to play and would make a lovely companion.
