Dear Residents, Hello, Chatham! John, the publisher, has asked me to write the resident letter for quite some time now; but, preferring to fly under the radar, I’ve repeatedly declined…until now. I think it was probably because I had to put my photo on the page LOL.

I’m thoroughly enjoying meeting more and more of you through the magazine and writing the cover articles about our neighbors who graciously share their stories. I’m looking forward to meeting more of you! The Babbitt family that you see on our cover is making the world “heartsafe.” After losing their 16-year-old son John to Sudden Cardiac Death in 2006, JoAnne, Dave and their son Andrew started the John Taylor Babbitt Foundation which has done incredible work in helping to prevent Sudden Cardiac Death through donations of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and funding research. Meet the Babbitts on page 6. And grab your calendars—there’s a couple of dates you’ll want to note so that you can come out and support a very worthwhile cause. April is National Facial Protection Month. Expert contributor Dr. Barbara Fodero of Chatham Orthodontics provides a sobering reminder about how important it is for our kids to wear mouth guards while playing sports. According to the American Dental Association, it is estimated that 200,000 sports-related mouth injuries are prevented each year simply by wearing a mouth guard! Turn to page 12. Always informative, expert contributor Liberty Drug & Surgical outlines the far-reaching benefits of compounding drug low-dose Naltrexone for a vast number of medical issues. Learn more on page 17. Our fantastic Chatham Borough Historical Society and Chatham Township Historical Society have given us two more great stories about our towns’ rich and interesting histories. I have to say I truly look forward to reading their submissions when they come in. See pages 9 and 14, respectively. Of course, there’s a healthy dose of cuteness from St. Hubert’s. Flip to page 22. Has anyone out there adopted any of the cuties we’ve featured? Let us know! Now that you know what I look like, please say “hi” if you see me around town. Until next month, Stacey

MEET THE BABBITT FAMILY: MAKING THE WORLD "HEARTSAFE" By Stacey McEvoy Photos by Christine Loy Photography and courtesy of the Babbitt family

T

he John Taylor Babbitt Foundation was started in 2007 by JoAnne and Dave Babbitt after they lost their 16-year-old son John to Sudden Cardiac Death.

Moving back to New Jersey in 1997 from a job transfer that had brought them to England, JoAnne and Dave moved to Chatham with their two young sons, John, who would start 3rd grade, and his younger brother, Andrew, who would start first grade, at St. Patrick School. After the boys graduated from St. Pats, they attended The Pingry School in Basking Ridge. Involved with town sports such as travel baseball, football and soccer, they also returned to their alma mater to play basketball on Sundays through the parish’s youth ministry program. It was on one of those Sundays that JoAnne got the call to come down to the gym. Dave was already there watching the game. “It’s every parent’s worst nightmare,” recalls JoAnne. “In a minute your life changes—just like that.” The JTB Foundation, dedicated to preventing Sudden Cardiac Death, raises funds to purchase Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) and have them placed in public places. “We did not want anyone else to go through the pain of losing a child. That’s what drove everything,” says JoAnne who is the vice president of the Foundation. Dave is the president.

compelling—the chance of survival is 5-7 percent without CPR and an AED. Studies have shown that the chance of survival, outside of a hospital, is 50-60 percent with CPR and an AED,” adding that no one should be afraid of using one. “Studies have shown that a 6th grader can use an AED. You open it and listen to it. It gives step-by-step instructions,” says JoAnne who visits the Chatham Farmers’ Market once a season to demonstrate how to operate an AED.

The Foundation has also been instrumental in getting legislation passed. The Good Samaritan Bill was debated and passed in 2012 and the CPR in Schools Bill was debated and passed in 2014. Students from local schools including Chatham High School , accompanied the Babbitt family to testify in Trenton in support of both bills. “It was amazing to see the power of our youth in Trenton with our elected officials. They knocked it out of the park,” JoAnne recalls. “The students gave their testimonies and were able to experience first hand how a bill becomes a law.” “If a person is not breathing, you have 3-5 minutes to react. Doing CPR, your hands compress a person’s chest to keep blood and therefore oxygen going to all the organs. Using a defibrillator to shock the heart into returning to a normal rhythm can save a life. And the stats are 6 | Chatham Living

“Chatham is one of the most heart safe communities,” JoAnne says, adding that New Jersey has risen from the bottom of the list to first in the list of states prepared to ensure the safety of schoolage athletes, in particular. The Babbitts have an ambitious goal: “We want AEDS to be as common as fire extinguishers. We would like to see them everywhere,” says JoAnne who was recently elected to the board of the Sudden Cardiac Foundation, a group that raises awareness nationwide about sudden cardiac arrest.

John had Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic cardiac condition. Each year, the Foundation awards a grant, which has very specific requirements, to underwrite scientific research to help identify kids that might be at risk for Sudden Cardiac Death from a genetic cardiac disorder. The Foundation’s research grants have been allocated over the years to Tufts University,

Johns Hopkins University, and Stanford University. JoAnne marvels at the amazing support from the Chatham community in every aspect that one could think of. “We are just so grateful, she says, noting how families and friends have helped with events, auctions, fundraising, legal advice, emotional support as well as raising awareness and funds through the Foundation’s events and through peerto-peer charity events. The Foundation will be the charity recipient of Fairmount Country Club’s annual holiday event this year —mark your calendars for Wed., Dec. 4. Save the date for the 13th annual JTB Walk for Heart (www.jtbfoundation. org) on Sun, May 19, at 10 a.m. at The Pingry School. The Babbitts are hopeful that the Foundation continues to inspire the next generation of life-savers, too. Chatham High School, The Pingry School and Fairfield University have active chapters of the JTB Heart Club that fundraise and spread awareness of Sudden Cardiac Death. They hope to engage more high

schools and universities to start a club. And, their son Andrew, now 27, initiated the Babbitt Ball. The 4th successful Babbitt Ball took place in February at the NY Athletic Club on Central Park South where 500 young professionals in their 20s and 30s celebrated and supported the Foundation.

JoAnne and Dave, who now split their time living in Chatham and Sea Girt, have much to celebrate this year as Andrew, who lives in Manhattan, will marry Colleen Murphy, a fellow Chathamite and St. Pat’s graduate, at St. Patrick Church in August. The couple also both graduated from the College of the Holy Cross. “Andrew is marrying into a loving family ...continued on next page

we’ve known since 1997. We adore each other’s kids—and they knew John,” says JoAnne. Reflecting on the John Taylor Babbitt Foundation and all it has accomplished, JoAnne says, “What came out of grief is something that is positive. There are more happy stories than sad. We’re celebrating life and lives saved with CPR and the use of an AED.”

Dear Carpet Girl, I’m a top NJ realtor who spends a lot of time helping homeowners get their homes ready for the competitive market. I’ve helped them make the home stand out through staging and furniture placement. Paint colors neutral and clutter must be gone! I have a lot of connections with interior designers, handy-man services, contractors, and organizational experts, I don’t have resources to advise me on carpets and floors. The spring market is upon us, my clients refuse to shop at “big box stores” they would rather have a oneon-one shopping experience. How does your in home services work, and do you offer special programs for realtors? Sincerely, Realtor

Dear Realtor,

or years, the “Old Homestead” on Main Street was a popular boarding house run by Mrs. Harvey Kelly. In 1908, the “New Old Homestead” was opened at 44 Fairmount Avenue. The beautiful property informally opened to residents of Chatham in August of 1908, when it dazzled visitors with its expert craftsmanship and modern amenities. The Chatham Press wrote of the event, “This house is tasteful in design, splendidly located and cannot fail to make even more widespread the fame of this noted summer resort.” As the Press blurb mentions, this property was one of many fine homes being constructed in Chatham at this time, as the town became more widely recognized as a premium summer destination in the tri-state area. The “New Old Homestead” represents a crucial contribution to Chatham’s status as a first-rate resort destination for urban locals. In the early 20th century, Chatham was swiftly being transformed by gorgeous properties such as 44 Fairmount into the picturesque suburban community it is today. Skilled local contractor Alfred M. Trowbridge designed and built the “New Old Homestead” and it serves as a testament of his expertise in the fields of architecture and construction. Mr. Trowbridge was a celebrated local builder who is responsible for many of the beautiful homes that are characteristic of the Morris County area. Mr. Trowbridge tragically died in a construction accident in Morristown in 1919 at the age of 51, leaving behind his wife and their eleven children. The “New Old Homestead” property still stands at 44 Fairmount, and although some changes have been made through the decades, it is a wonderful example of Chatham’s storied past as a highly desirable resort destination.

APRIL IS NATIONAL FACIAL PROTECTION MONTH A 2007 study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association ranked basketball as the sport at the top of the list for the highest rate of dental injuries for both men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletes. According to the mouth guard manufacturer Shock Doctor, one in four injuries on the basketball court occur above the neck.

Contributed by Dr. Barbara Fodero, Chatham Orthodontics

I

n 2017, Chicago Bulls player Kris Dunn suffered a nasty fall during a game against the Golden State Warriors, causing him to land face-first after a dunk—chipping and dislocating two front teeth. This unfortunate accident serves as a reminder on the importance of wearing mouth guards to protect teeth during sports and recreational play. The American Association of OralMaxillofacial Surgery estimates that American children and teens will knock out 5 million teeth this year playing sports. According to the American Dental Association, it is estimated that 200,000 sports related mouth injuries are prevented each year simply with use of a mouth guard. A mouth guard is one of the most inexpensive pieces of protective gear available to young athletes, especially when compared to the high cost of restoring a knocked out or broken tooth. According to the study, parents

estimate it would cost $1,142 to replace a damaged permanent tooth, but in reality, the cost to treat one knockedout tooth over a lifetime can range from $5,000 to $20,000. Parents and patients may not realize that restorations may have to be repeated periodically, which amplifies repair or replacement costs. In early 2017, the American Association of Orthodontists collected data in an independent survey found that 99 percent of parents whose children play in organized sports felt youth should be required to wear mouth guards in order to play--yet 37 percent of parents said their child never wears a mouth guard while playing sports. The study revealed misconceptions about which sports pose a significant risk to the mouth. It found that most parents want mouth guards required for football (83 percent) and hockey (76 percent)--sports that have long been associated with injuries. However, less than half of parents want mouth guards required for basketball (49 percent).

So why don’t we wear more mouthguards? We get a lot of resistance from children who don’t want to wear them. Among parents whose children do not always wear mouth guards, the vast majority report that they “give in” frequently and allow their child to play a sport without one. Nearly half of the parents surveyed think it is more difficult to get their child to wear a mouth guard than it is to eat all their vegetables without complaining. Many athletes complain that mouthguards are bulky or difficult to talk with during a game. Many sports, like basketball, do not require players to wear them, so it is difficult to convince a child to be the only one on the team to wear one. Making it mandatory to wear a mouthguard eliminates this barrier. Nowadays, there are many over-thecounter boil-and-bite varieties that fit better than mouth guards of the past. Custom-fit mouth guards made by your dentist are by far the best fitting and the most preferred by athletes. They are easier to talk and breath with as they aren’t as bulky. Talk to your dentist or orthodontist about the type of mouthguard they would recommend for your child.

BOXING CHAMP FREDDIE WELSH AND THE LONG HILL HEALTH FARM

I

Contributed by Patricia Wells, Chatham Township Historical Society n 1917, World Lightweight Boxing Champion Freddie Welch purchased the 162-acre Palletreau farm and mansion on the southeast corner of the Fairmount Avenue and Meyersville Road intersection across from what is now the Fairmount Country Store. Welch was planning his post-boxing career and poured most of his wealth into the property. He installed a gymnasium, tennis courts and a golf course, and refurbished the pool. In August 1917 he opened the Long Hill Health Farm for successful, but stressed businessmen who wanted to relax and learn how to eat and exercise properly. Unfortunately, he had few clients, so he gave exhibition boxing matches to raise money for the Red Cross to support their war relief efforts in Europe. With the business struggling, Welch enlisted in the army in September 1918 and was assigned to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. to help rehabilitate injured soldiers. Discharged in February 1920, he returned to the Township. He decided to attempt a comeback in the boxing ring but achieved only moderate success. He again retired in 1922 after a miserable defeat. Beginning in 1920, a few noteworthy professional boxers started coming to Welsh’s Health Farm to train. Although they brought attention and business to the

Health Farm, Welsh still wanted the elusive wealthy businessmen as clients. In 1923 Welsh decided to return to the army and asked his neighbor Madame Hranoush Bey if she would run the Health Farm. Bey was a good businessperson; she welcomed boxers of any nationality or color. The business boomed. One of the boxers was a hard-partying black Senegalese boxer called “Battling Siki”. Madame Bey insisted he abide by her rules and strict regimen, which he did. When Welsh heard that Siki was training at the farm he called Madame Bey and demanded that Siki leave or that she would have to. Madame Bey and all the boxers decided to move the training camp to her farm a mile down the road. The Health Farm’s short heyday was over. By 1927, Welsh could no longer pay the mortgage and the property was sold for a fraction of its worth. Several months later Welsh died of a heart attack, and three months after his death the mansion burned to the ground, one of several arsons in the area. But the boxing camp that Welsh had inadvertently started would become the famous Bey’s Training Camp just a mile down River Road. Want to know more? Check out “Madame Bey’s: Home to Boxing Legends” by New Providence author Gene Pantalone. It’s in the Library of the Chathams and can be purchased online.

CHATHAM EMERGENCY SQUAD INSTALLS OFFICERS; HONORS MARK SPINNER WHO RETIRES AFTER 40 YEARS Contributed by Craig Alperowitz, Chatham Emergency Squad Green Village Volunteer Fire Department, Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, New Vernon First Aid Squad and New Vernon Fire Department were all in attendance at the annual celebration. In addition to being present, the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad responded to calls in Chatham overnight so that all Chatham Emergency Squad members could have the evening to celebrate.

O

n Saturday, February 9, the new administration of elected officers was presented by the Chatham Emergency Squad at its annual Officer Installation Dinner held at the Wyndham Hotel in Florham Park. The evening was further highlighted by multiple standing ovations for long-term members of the Squad, each of whom have devoted years of service to helping the Chatham community. Representing the administration side, the installed officers include Robin Hoppe (Communications VP, serving in her second term); Joanne Howden (Personnel VP); Abigail Maddi (Secretary). Jeff Stanton (Facilities VP), Evan Skinner (President), and Cathy Warbrick (Finance VP),

“The evening was a true celebration of our members’ dedication and commitment to service,” said Evan Skinner, president of the Chatham Emergency Squad. “Every member in the room has devoted countless hours of their time and stopped what they were doing to help others in need. When you think about the combined number of years that Dave Elliott, Missy Cotter, Christine Grobert, Peter Herslow and Mark Spinner have devoted to the Squad – it far exceeds the 83 years we’ve been serving the Chathams and it was a perfect evening to stop, reflect and thank everyone for all they do for the Chatham community.” In addition to the above individual achievements, 32 members of the Chatham Emergency Squad were recognized for earning 100 Length of Service Awards Points (LOSAP) which is a New Jersey State incentive program recognizing volunteers who actively serve their regular and weekend shifts, and positively contribute through additional volunteer hours. The Chatham Emergency Squad is an all-volunteer organization funded almost exclusively by donations. CES never charges for its services. In 2018 they responded to over 1,200 emergency calls and provided free training in CPR to more than 400 residents, teachers, coaches and emergency personnel. To learn more, to donate or to volunteer, please visit www.chathamemergencysquad.org.

Representing the operations side, the installed officers include Steve Davenport (Captain), Mike Lemons (Operations Lieutenant) and Jim Martin (Equipment Lieutenant). During the installation ceremonies, the Squad recognized several members for their continuous years of service to the Chatham Emergency Squad: Ken Sham, Marie Noel, Bryan McGookin and Lisbeth Bringgaard who have each served for 5 years; Missy Cotter and Dave Elliott who have each served for 10 years; Christine Grobert who has served for 20 years; Peter Herslow for serving for 35 years; and Mark Spinner who had served for 40 years before announcing his retirement from the Squad in December 2018. Grobert, Herslow and Spinner received extended ovations and applause from a grateful audience. Capped by speeches and stories of their dedication to the Chathams, it proved to be an extremely moving evening with barely a dry eye in the house. 10 QUESTIONS WITH. . . . KARA SIBILIA By Stacey McEvoy

T

his month, our featured resident in "10 Questions" is Kara Sibilia!

I've lived in Chatham for 14 years (wow! where did that time go?) with my husband and three boys, ages 11, 9 and 4. I worked in marketing and public relations until my oldest son was born. Now, I freelance write whenever I can, do volunteer work at my sons’ schools and at Chatham Borough’s Department of Community Services. Recently, I became the Editor of Elegant Lifestyles magazine - a bimontly publication printed through New Jersey Hills Media Group (the publisher of the Chatham Courier, Madison Eagle and other local newspapers). What is a perfect day in Chatham for you?

During the summer, my boys love to go fishing on the bridge at Stanley/Passaic River Park. Though we haven’t caught any fish

yet, they still have fun! An ideal day would be the park, then a stop at the farmers’ market, lunch downtown and finish at the Fish & Game pool. Favorite family spots in Chatham are D’Oro Ristorante, Noah’s Bagels and Mitsuba. If you could have one super power, what would it be? The power to heal - sickness, injuries, anything. What are your hobbies? Gardening, yoga, reading and writing Are you a dog or cat person? Cat - much to the chagrin of my kids - they really want a puppy! If you were shipped off to a deserted island for six months, what album would you bring? That’s a tough one! I’m a Beatles fan, so it would be a toss-up between Rubber Soul and Abbey Road. Also, I would bring as many books as I could. If you could have coffee with one famous person, alive or dead, who would it be?

Estée Lauder. A friend, who worked directly for Lauder, told me a story: In the early days of the company, Lauder was trying to sell her first perfumed oil to the upscale Galleries Lafayette in Paris - the store manager declined. So, one day, Lauder “accidentally” spilled her perfume in the store, and customers, smelling the fragrance, started asking where they could get it. Galleries Lafayette immediately ordered Lauder’s perfume, thus propelling the beauty empire that exists today. I loved that story of Estée Lauder’s resourcefulness and tenacity – her autobiography, Estée: A Success Story, is on my reading list. What talent do you wish you had? I wish I knew how to play the piano. Where is the most interesting place you have visited? Pompeii, Italy (and climbing Mt. Vesuvius). You are the chairperson of MyChathamNJ. Tell us about it. Started in 2013 by a group of Chatham residents, business owners and employees, MyChathamNJ works in conjunction with Chatham Borough’s Community Services Department to organize community events including the Farmers’ Market, Fishawack Festival, Holiday White Lights, Spring Clean and Sustainability Fair. Are you open for new MyChathamNJ members? How do people get involved? Yes! Volunteers are critical to the success of the community programs that make Chatham so special. To volunteer, please contact Janice Piccolo, Director, Community Services: jpiccolo@chathmborough.org or (973) 635-0674 x2000. April 2019 | 21

ADOPT-A-PET

St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center provides services that support the human-animal bond and seeks to foster an environment in which people respect all living creatures. Learn how you can volunteer, foster, donate, and adopt at sthuberts.org. You can meet and adopt any of the following animals at our Madison Campus, 575 Woodland Avenue.

Contributed by Matt Wildman, St. Hubert’s Photos by Erin Bauers Bronson is the quintessential family dog: Affectionate, outgoing and exuberant with everyone, and just wants to be part of the gang. He’s been on many field trips while at St. Hubert’s, where members of the public come and take out our adoptable dogs for a few hours. Here’s what one field trip participant wrote: “Bronson was affectionate, sweet and patient with our 3 kids (6, 9, 10). He was great on a leash and good in the car and he loved to snuggle. . .best dog ever! Anyone who loves dogs and wants a great companion would love Bronson.”

Not only is Sage suave and debonair, he is the coolest, most loveable mush you'll ever meet. A foster took him to her home and within five minutes he was sitting behind her on the couch rubbing his head into the back of her neck. He also LOVES other cats. As far as awesome cats go, they don't get any more awesome than Sage.

Clarice has been on a number of field trips. One field trip participant remarked that she is “a great walker who is very calm, sweet and well-behaved. She loves human company and was very attentive to us during the walk.”

Chatham Living would like to thank Freshpet for their sponsorship of St. Hubert’s Adopt-A-Pet.

A picture speaks a thousand words when it comes to The Man. That’s right, that’s his name: The Man. And in this case, a name also speaks a thousand words. The Man is super affectionate, mellow, and just one very cool cat with both people and other cats. 22 | Chatham Living
