though, are always the same kind of light pink as 'Fukurokuju'. The flowers of the latter seem a little less disorderly. The flowering season of 'Yae-akebono' is about the third week of April. It makes a healthy tree of a somewhat irregular outline, because of the few bent, heavy branches that support the crown. Prunus 'Yae-akebono' Less current synonyms: Yaye-akebono, Prunus serrulata f. versicolor Description: Tree broad and spreading, to 8(12) m high. Young foliage green to bronzegreen (RHS 146-A). Serration single with small glands. Foliage is not yet well developed in the flowering season. Stipules slightly divided, 1217 mm long. Corymbose inflorescence, with two to four flowers. Peduncles short, 0.51.0 cm long. Pedicels 1.52.5 cm long. Flower in bud purplish pink (RHS 63-D), becoming pale pink (RHS 62-D) to almost pure white when completely opened; petal edges have a slightly darker color. Flower about 5 cm in diameter, opening to a flat plane, with the opening of the ovary always visible, no distinct fragrance. Petals fourteen to sixteen (sometimes as few as ten), orbicular, uniform, usually slightly emarginate at the top, 2025 Ă— 1727 mm, starchyrumpled in appearance when the flower first opens.
