its flowers and buds are pure white. On the point of fragrance, 'Ariake' does not fall short of 'Shirotae'. On better soils its broad ascending growth is so vigorous that it has been recommended for less sheltered, colder places. 'Ariake' is a beautiful and healthy cherry with flowers borne in great profusion; it certainly deserves to be propagated and planted more often. Prunus 'Ariake' Less current synonyms: Ariyake, 'Candida', Kanto-ariake Description: Tree funnel-shaped, broader at a later age, to 7 m high. Young leaves light bronze-green (RHS 152-C). Serration usually single with markedly elongated, fine awns that occasionally have white or slightly pinkish small glands(!); an occasional leaf lacks the caudate tip. Stipules 1923 mm long. Corymbose inflorescence, with four to seven (usually six) flowers. Peduncles long, 34 cm. Pedicels 2.03.5 cm long. Flower in bud a light shade of pink, showing a slight pinkish hue when freshly opened, and turning pure white (RHS 155-C) when completely opened.
