a floriferous shrub of about 3(5) m high with single, long-calyxed flowers of a rather deep pink (RHS 63-C). It is useful for the small garden and is propagated by cuttings. Grafting on P. avium is less successful. Oshidori-zakura (synonym Prunus incisa Thunberg ex Murray 'Oshidori') is a valuable, small garden tree with light pink, double flowers. It was discovered in a farmer's garden at Gotenba in Shizuoka Prefecture. Oshidori means "mandarin ducks." The ducks have a reputation for matrimonial loyalty in the Far East, and the name was given to this cherry because of the two pistils that are found as a loyal pair in many of its flowers. 'Oshidori' is similar to the parent species except for the following. Its crown is more cup-shaped. It has few hairs on young twigs of shoots.
