All cherry flowers are darker when in bud, becoming paler or lighter when they expand. White-flowered cherries show a slight pinkish hue in bud, and pink cultivars have dark pink or almost red flowers in bud. Flowers in bud show the richly colored backside of the outer petals. When the flower opens, it shows the inner petals and the inner side of the outer petals, which are much less saturated in color. In determining the color of cherry flowers, one has to be aware of this difference and make a clear distinction between the color of the flowers in bud and the color of the expanded flowers. Color should never be determined at the end of blossoming. Some cultivars change color when their flowers wither; then the petals in the heart may, just before shedding, turn to a purple-violet. With some cherries, such as 'Fugenzo', the color of the whole flower may change from white to pink, changing the aspect of the tree completely at the end of the blos-
