INTRODUCTION

Publications are inherently collaborative. The working relationship between contributors can vary. Traditional book and magazine design separates authors creating content, and production artists, translating the ideas of others into a visual form. Contemporary book and magazine publications encourage artists and designers to author meaningful and expressive content beyond the idea of a “published monograph. Today, many designers are initiating their own projects, wielding their visual skills and knowledge of the publishing industry to become their own producers. The designer as publisher is in a unique position to unify text, imagery, layout, and final production into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. As an educator and teacher of design, my pedagogy dynamically

integrates the creation of books and collaborative projects among students. Collaborative books require each student to act responsibly, creating content that is both social and interactive. The creative act of making a book becomes a physical archive to the learning process. Graphic design is bound to the written word. Strong language and narrative skills allow for a better understanding of hierarchy, structuring content in an appropriate and meaningful context for an intended audience. Books demand the rigor of aesthetics, editing skills and production considerations—the book itself becomes a reflective didactic. This book project was loosely designed and reflective to the needs of its participating students. As the faculty advisor to this project it was my intention to fully allow,

7 JOHN P. CORRIGAN

and openly encourage, the students to define and structure the books parameters. As a group the students determined the subject, established the ‘rules’ of engagement, outlined the structure, defined the creative parameters, and maintained its aesthetic voice. Each student was allowed the freedom to work independently within his or her designated pages. As the thematic content shifted, each author/designer respectfully reacted to the needs of the group and overall integrity of the book. A predominate theme of the book is a collected data set. The content is collected through a Q & A format. The group determined a series of fifteen questions based on general categories of interest. A sixteenth question, based on Occupy Wallstreet and The Other 99%, was uniformly asked

through social media sites. Each student authored their own series of questions in order to obtain a unique set of responses and given sixteen pages to expressively present their research in whatever aesthetic they determined as appropriate. The title of the book, We Make Adventure With What’s Called Choice, was concocted by combining words from a collection of favorite quotations gleaned from the collection of responses. The student’s dissemination of this project has produced a richly diverse book. It is both reflective and personal. Each of the authors varied interpretations present a diverse and varied cultural snapshot. Each collaborator presents a critical exploration of personal connectedness.

What habits would you continue, in a post-apocalyptic world? Would you like to overcome your strongest fear? Why? My biggest fear is losing a family member, and I’m possibly able to overcome that. I would win if Hobbes doesn’t jump in to help. It’s a tie between Islam and Christianity. They are both intended to be a source of hope and guidance, but over time they have been the cause of wars and countless deaths in the name of religion. I would least like to be killed by a Tiger. I’m always dropping pens and pencils. Of course I would want to overcome my fears, it would increase my confidence and make me a stronger individual. I will always keep cracking my knuckles. I would never want to travel to Chernobyl, Ukraine. I would act heroically. I would choose to eat healthier and to exercise more. I find anywhere that has an exceptional view of the sunset to be inspirational. How many years I’m going to be stuck in college...

“I identify myself a Yellow Oh I’m wearing

What habits would you keep in a post-apocalyptic world?

I would keep on drinking...

WHY NOT? Which cartoon character would you pick a fight with? Who would win? One of the power puff girls, and I would kick their ass. What if you were given a chance to be a hero, would you act heroically? Yes, I suppose. What habits would you continue, in a post-apocalyptic world? I would keep on drinking, why not? If you were to pick one meal to sustain you indefinitely, what would you choose to eat? Some kind of mom cooked meal. Where in the world would you least like to travel? Alaska, I’ve had no desire to go to Alaska. What objects/places do you find inspirational? Sculpure gardens, good enough?

What secrets would you divulge anonymously but never personally?

My weight? Would you like to overcome your strongest fear? Why? Yes, I am really scared of heights. To go skydiving would be awesome. If given a chance to completely alter your lifestyle, what would you change? Yes, I would be a millionaire. What religion do you like the least? Why? Mormon is that it? Because they’re weird. If you could pick one profession to be automatically trained/knowledgeable what would you be? Pilot, a pilot of the airs. Describe your most memorable or repeated dream? How would you change that dream? When I was a child. I would have dreams where I was jumping on my parent’s bed and kept falling off the bed.

All of the colors are the most important! Maybe not the ones with a frequency too high or low to be seen by the human eye. Those colors are jerks. - Jessie Blue, violet, indigo, red, orange, green, yellow Mostly yellow is just a dumb color, although it is a good at accents. - Anonymous Male Blue! Violet. Indigo. Green. Would you like to know the day you’re going to die ahead of time? Why or why not?

No. I feel like it would prevent me from doing things I want to do. I would rather have fun doing what I love and then dying without knowing the day I am going to die. - Stacy No, I would spend way to much time worrying about how to make my life worth it. I would rather just have it be a surprise - Danielle No. I would think and worry too much about it and expecting it would make it hurt worse I think. Nope. Because I’d be paranoid and then there is no need for faith in God. This way I have peace that God is in control and not me. I have peace that I don’t have to worry that i’m not going to get everything done I want to. It’s a surprise! - Anonymous Female A

Yes. Maybe not necessarily religion but a relationship with our creator. God created us to have a relationship with Jesus because Jesus died on a cross for our sins. If I did not have that relationship my life would be pretty messed up. - Stacy Religion maybe not but personal beliefs, yes. If people don’t believe in anything they really have nothing to live for. - Stephanie

For myself I do not find it necessary, I have researched and studied religions of all sorts and none of them offer something I feel I need. I think that religion is something that people need to really study and dissect and question, and if you find that one works for you, then that’s awesome. I would never tell someone that they shouldn’t believe in whatever religion they follow. Yet that starts to delve into a differentiation between faith and religion. The only time I have a problem with religion is when it infringes on others rights or attacks people in any way. No one has any right to tell anyone their religion is wrong or that they’re going to Hell, or other similar place, due to their religious beliefs, sexuality, political stance, actions done to them, etc. If someone is using their religion as a sense of entitlement or uses it to see themselves as a better person then someone else, I think that person seriously needs to go back and really read their holy scripture. Long story short: I think faith is a wonderful thing for people if they need it, but religion makes me wary and I think everyone should always question themselves and what they follow. - Jessie

Yes, it defines culture norms/morals based on something greater than humanity. - Anonymous Male

YES! Well not necessarily religion as much as a relationship with Christ. You can’t deny that God is all around us, I mean seriously look around you. These things didn’t just appear. A big crash in outerspace didn’t put those flowers in the field or make the sunset... Scientifically speaking a bee isn’t physically able to fly, yet it does. Look at all the tiny detail of a caterpillar... God gives us the hope to live for something meaningful, rather than just living life. Through Him we are saved by His grace because we are sinners. There is nothing we can do that would make us good or get us into Heaven. Because God loves us, he holds out his love for us to take. It’s like a gift. If we choose to accept it, we are His. If we choose to deny the gift, well...we are Satan’s. http://www.4laws.com/laws/englishkgp/ - Anonymous Female A

I think that have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is necessary to save you from your sins and from experiencing an unpleasant afterlife. I think that religion in the terms of culture and traditions is not necessary but is something people have imposed to make religion more man-centered rather that God-centered. - Danielle

Religion no but a Relationship with God is critical to having life. - Anonymous Female B

Do you think religion is necessary? Why or why not?

Yes. Because it’s something to settle your mind when you have no other answers. - Anonymous Female C

Smell because it has been messed with anyway. Growing up with 3 brothers allowed for my sense of smell to decrease. I don’t smell bad things when others say it is an awful smell. I will fully admit I have a deep love for food and drink, but my other senses are entirely too dear to me to even think about giving up. - Jessie Taste. I can do without flavors. I want to be able to feel the touch of a good friend, hear their voice and see them to help me remember them forever. Besides, taste only lasts as long as you eat a meal. There are more important things in life and I don’t need to spend hours and hours tasting what I eat. - Anonymous Female A I would lose my sense of smell... i know that taste is connected, but I lost a good chunk of my sense of smell and I didn’t really notice until my boyfriend came home and freaked out because the downstairs left chemicals open and it had filled the apt and I was feeling sick, but I didn’t know why. - Anonymous Female C

I am not really sure what it is all about except that a few people have a lot of the money. I think it has been blown out of proportion on social media networks and I appreciate people who post things like starving children or articles that explain how wealth distribution in the US is actually mathematically accurate for how things are usually split up. The other text boxes are jealous because this one is bigger, it is a greedy bastard taking all the text area and not sharing evenly with the other ones. The 1% pay over 1/3 of the nations taxes, the top 5% pay over half o the nations taxes for the other 99/95% to have education/transportation/security I am not sure why so many people are so angry. It is true there are some corrupt people who have a lot of money but I don’t understand how this surprises anyone, if there are two people other things being equal and one cheats they will end up with more money. I have looked for any kind of organized well written statement declaring both why they ar angry and specific things that should be done to make them happy and have been unable to find this. They are an unorganized mob who are all angry for some reason but have no leader/specific direction so nothing will change. Jobs do exist, I have been employed and found new employment since graduating from college in 2008. I don’t even know how many interviews I had and was turned down from, but I continued until I found somewhere that needed my skills. My first job since college wasn’t even related to my field of study and my current job isn’t exactly what I want but it is related to my field of study and pays my bills. It is something that I have to do if I want money. When people refuse certain jobs because it isn’t what they want, or doesn’t pay them how much they feel they should be paid, or live based on feelings rather than do what has to be done in order to achieve what they want they are only showing they are small children inside who are unwilling to do what has to be done in order to get what they want. Protesting all day does not accomplish anything, I have seen videos of people getting shot by rubber bullets/arrested for protesting in an attempt to get an emotional response out of the viewers. If you think about it from the police side: there are large numbers of angry people, you don’t know if any of them have a weapon or will spark a riot; so you have to keep strict order and peace for your personal safety as well as the safety of the peaceful protesters. I don’t think it is unreasonable for people who get out of line or don’t follow instructions in these settings to be arrested or disciplined. Also these videos only show a short/small window into these settings and you cannot get a full view of what sparked police aggression. There are some cases where police get out of line and act with unnecessary violence harming peaceful people and I believe that they should not be above the law and disciplinary action should happen. This is not a perfect world, people are different, some people get credit for things they didn’t do, some people get more than others. Grow up and do what YOU have to do to get what YOU want and live within YOUR means. Don’t compare yourself to others, someone else will always have more than you in one area whether it’s knowledge, time, friends, material possessions or something else. TLDR - I think most of the OWS movement consists of dumb children hiding in adult bodies. - Anonymous Male

How do you feel about death? I know that it’s natural and is going to happen to everyone, but even after losing many loved ones in my life, I still have a hard time dealing with it. What I don’t understand are all the people waiting to die to be happy. You live your life while you’re alive. That’s why it’s called life. Once you’re dead you’re gone. People are out there wasting their lives and other people’s lives and that makes me even more sick.

What makes you cry? Extreme Makeover Home Edition. I’m not even going to lie. It’s ridiculous how much some people suffer in when all they do is give all their time and love to others. I cry a lot in general. It’s not easy trying to be someone who God didn’t make you. I wasn’t born with this path in mind for Him. How do you feel about sex before marriage?

I think it’s okay to have sex before marriage but it needs to be saved for the right person. You need to make sure you’re really in love with the other person. I made the mistake of not being ready when I was only sixteen and regret it to this day. The guy I lost my virginity to is a complete jerk and very manipulative. I wish I wouldn’t have let him control me like that. Absolutely necessary.

Sex before marriage is completely fine as long as you love the person. Do it. I don’t believe in marriage. So, sex before sex and more sex.

Sex before marriage is beautiful in moderation. Sexual compatibility is highly important in a marriage. You can love the shit out of someone, but if they don’t know how to sex you up properly...then you’re going to have to live with that forever. Geez. Well, considering I’ve had plenty of it, I don’t consider sex before marriage an issue.

76 {Mackenzie Owens}

If you think you are ready for sex before marriage, then I think you should go for it. I think it’s unhealthy to resist sexual urges, especially when you are in your prime, age-wise/libidowise. Besides, many people make terrible, terrible friends, or boyfriends or girlfriends, but incredible lovers. I think it is my human obligation to get to know as many people as possible, and some people are just better known different ways than others.

One night stands are not my thing, but may be for others. I don’t judge them.

One night stands? Who can finish in one night? you must mean one week stands.

How do you feel about one night stands?

One night stands are a sign of weakness. One night stands mean you’re taking responsibility for that one night stand.

I’m not into one night stands.

I’d rather be a celibate fuck than have multiple one night stands.

I’m fine with one night stands, but that’s not how I operate. I have a tendency to go after girls I am really into and would like to see them more than once.

if you feel up to a one-night stand, if you’re confident in controlling your emotions, then go for it. I feel that you should not ever do anything life-wise that you are uncomfortable with your own abilities or whatever.

Thetells Bard a tale Metaphorically speaking, the greatest taste I’ve ever encountered was the taste of victory in the midst of adversity. I won’t elaborate on the precise details—if you really want to know, ask me some other time— but despite the available strong flavor of revenge, it was the flavor of truly overcoming odds to make a personal triumph that took grasp of my consciousness and made me long for more.

If I had a super power I would have the power of mind control. I would be a villain, but only to bring about the best in humanity. My villainy would only extend until humanity or a hero of humanity could rise to the occasion. 82

The dark scared me the most as a kid. That fear never really goes away.

I’m inspired by everything—however, I think the thing that inspires me most is the realization that I have been through things that might have conquered some people, turned them bitter and hateful...but, for the most part anyway, I am able to rise above it. My ex-girlfriend broke up with me on my birthday. In terms of timing, it was the second-worst thing that happened to me, but it affected me in more ways than I could ever imagine. It literally shattered my whole world and nearly caused me to turn the emotional injury into a physical injury. Luckily, I’m a resilient person, and was able to pull myself through. It helped me write most of the material for my poetry book. Externally, I believe it was my great-grandmother’s death, but it didn’t really occur to me the exact gravity of the situation. Internally, I’ve had many brushes with death, but the first was when I was 11 years old. I didn’t know how to deal with the treatment I was receiving at home from my Dad’s horrible live-in girlfriend and the awful treatment I was receiving at school, so I made a pretty vain attempt at suicide with a bottle of acetaminophen. I ended up vomiting blood for a while, but I survived long enough to see things change and get better.

In one dream I had, I was walking along the roads by the grocery store that used to be by my Dad’s house—a Cub Foods. Then I met up with my best friend from grade school that I haven’t seen in 6 or 7 years, and we went to his apartment to chill and watch some TV, kind of like we did when we were kids. We were discussing how to make the spiciest chili when I got up to take a leak. It was awkward just hanging out with him as though nothing happened in the last 7 years—except for him being in this apartment. From the bathroom I called to him asking if his girlfriend still lived with him—he called back from the kitchen/living room that she had moved out not long before my coming over to visit, without taking her things. The bathroom was like a jungle with no toilet, but

there was a sink and vanity. I looked into the mirror and saw myself, and the desire to leave the apartment was intense. For some reason I kept washing my hands in the sink which was a waterfall that looked like a mini Niagara Falls. As I washed my hands, I thought about my most recent girlfriend moving out of the place where I lived, and said to myself, “I feel nothing.” It was not a depressed or sad statement, but one of utter resignation. Something I mentally noted, (in the dream), that I hadn’t really felt about anyone before. But then I recounted all the friends that I had lost contact with in various ways over the past few years—and as I named off names to the mirror, I felt myself waking up. I walked out of the bathroom and woke up.

Mind Reading would be my power, and I would be an everyday hero. Not a hero like Spiderman, but a hero like the one in the Superchick’s song “Hero;” the one who cares and makes a change. I would need no alterego. My powers would be used to help those around me in discrete ways: consoling the girl who is contemplating suicide; getting help for a young man suffering from abuse; confronting the alcoholic father; saving lives from the darkness of the world. I would be the human hero, the one who saves not the body, but the soul.

I

wouldn’t say I’m atheist, but I don’t think there’s a god and religion doesn’t really

make sense in today’s society. It causes too many problems. I have a pretty positive outlook on life, and I don’t think we need God to make a good society. Love for humankind is more important than any particular religion. Nothing happens after we die, we just die. There is no afterlife. Once I fell down the stairs and fractured my tailbone. I was off from work for almost a week, which would have been cool, except I could not sit up, so playing video games was practically impossible. In a way, I’m just really lucky it happened during the summer and not during the school year. 86

My first experience with death was with my great-uncle Jim. He died when I was 2. I don’t remember the exact day, but during his wake I fell off a couch and cracked my head and chin open on a coffee table and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

I hate hypocrites and liars, especially liars. I can think of one in particular…

I know I had a dream last night, but it’s really foggy. Otherwise the last dream I remember vividly was about work. One of the other store managers had thrown a coup and demoted my manager to bookseller, and a few coworkers and I were going to rebel.

I want to be an author, or doing some sort of online business. I would do anything that allowed me to work from home. I’m inspired by everything, a book, a magazine, art, movies, etc. I want to go to Scotland or Ireland, somewhere remote and full of ancient architecture. I definitely would be a hero, with maybe flying as my power. Or something more useful, like controlling plants or some element. Actually, for sure the plant thing. I dated someone named Alex, which was embarrassing to admit. I don’t really have a secret, but now I’m able to acknowledge that I was a really annoying as a teenager.

Occupy Wall Street is an idea that I don’t think will have the impact that the movement is looking for. I don’t think they are getting the numbers they had hoped for. Anytime 99% of the people feel like they are being shortchanged, it’s time for the 1% to pay attention. Unfortunately, the 1% is so far removed from reality that they don’t seem to care enough to pay attention. The 1% need to feel it in their pocketbooks like the rest of us.

My dream is to visit Italy someday. Maybe I could live there for a while, learn to cook Italian recipes, and learn the language and the people’s customs. My grandparents were immigrants from Italy so I feel like I have a connection to the place.

I believe in the teachings of Jesus and try to model my life around honesty, integrity and caring for others, and believe that my relationship with God and Jesus is personal and doesn’t need to be shared witha community of believers.

Lobster Bisque Soup was the best thing I ever tasted. I loved Rocky & Bullwinkle when I was a child. I was most scared by the idea of a psychotic individual sneaking up on me, or supernatural events like shown in the Twilight Zone series. When stressed at work I have dreamt about not getting my work done on time. Repetitive sounds like tapping or pen clicking annoy me the most. Getting up at 5:15 a.m. is the worst part of my routine. I would love to be a lawyer. They get to do very interesting work. My super power would be healing. I would have to be a hero.

My mother’s mental illness was an embarrassment when I was younger. Another girl I considered to be a friend once used it against me to gain popularity with some other girls. At that time people didn’t understand schizophrenia very well, and it was really hard on my father and I.

I have had no accidents or injuries, thank goodness. My grandfather’s death was the first death I experienced, and the depth of sadness that it brings.

The Sorcerer sends a minion Spiders scared me the most growing up. And they still do today. My last nightmare featured a giant spider. I designed an escape plan in case I need to get out of my room in a hurry. One day I would like to travel to England and then see all of Europe. Though, it would be awesome if I could actually go to Skyrim—with sword raised as I defeat a dragon.

The best thing I ever tasted was a fresh root beer in a brewery I visited in Alabama. Mostly the experience had the strongest effect on me. The root beet tasted all the more amazing when I knew I stood only ten feet away from where they made it.

I think there is a place where the deceased go—not heaven or hell— but some sort of paradise. There we see loved ones again and revisit the happiest moments of our life. We don’t relive our life, but walk through these moments.

If I had super powers, I would try really hard to be a hero. I would have lasers coming out of my eyes. It would be badass.

Caitlin Teague

I’m inspired by good people and good friends. They remind me not to be lonely or depressed. I’m an atheist, but I have a personal moral code that takes from various religious philosophies. Mostly I have a strong belief in humanity (as a good force). I believe that people are fundamentally good people, and that they are capable of good things.

I don’t like it when people talk down to me, or think they’re too smart for their own good. I especially dislike it when people aren’t receptive to other ideas or opinions.

The prepares Wizard his spells My favorite cartoon was Bugs Bunny. He’s still funny today. I hated snakes when I was younger.

Loud, disruptive behavior annoys me. My philosophy is a bit iconoclastic. People should accept others without any particular way of believing. Also, I have a constant drive to learn more about a variety of things.

I do not remember my last dream, but the theme often centers on something I should have done. My least favorite thing is straightening anything. People who think or feel deeply about something inspires me. If I were a hero? I would be a baseball hero like Albert Pujols. I have plenty of embarrassing stories from when I was younger— like the time I took our cat to be boarded and could not find the handle; the carrier was upside down. Once I fell off my bike while trying to outrun a dog. It tore off my thumb nail. My aunt died of breast cancer when I was ten, followed by my mother with the same disease three years later.

Spiders and deep water scared me when I was little, and still do!

I don’t like it when people make turns into the wrong lane while driving. I don’t like getting out of bed in the morning.

I would be a hero, because I’d feel bad if I were a villain and would apologize too much. My power would either be super-cuteness that no one could deny, or ultimate wisdom like Solomon in the Bible.

I’m a Christian Lutheran. After people die, they face judgment before God, then go to either Heaven or Hell.

Sweden. Sweden.

5. I believe it was sometime in 2003, when I was a junior in high school. My older older sister had come to pick me up from school. Everything went normally until we reached a T-junction, and had to make a left turn. There was a car (actually a van, as we’d soon discover) approaching from the left, but it was quite far away. My sister pulled the car out a bit so it was sticking into the lane, and started to make the turn. I saw a car quickly approaching from the right, and made a quick audible warning like, “Careful!”, which caused my sister to hesitate and stop in the middle of the road . Then I noticed that the van coming from the left was barreling into view, and tried to warn her. What happened next felt like it was in slow motion.. The van driver probably had not noticed us (since we were only partly in his lane), and the front/side of her vehicle slammed into the front of my sister’s car.

7. I don’t have them anymore. There’s two I remember from when I was a kid. One was from when I was really little and I remember hiding in the dump area behind our house because I thought natives and wolves were going to find and kill me. The second one was when I was a little older, and I would dream that I could fly. In order to fly I had to run really fast and then jump into the air and twist so I was backwards, and I would fly on my back first but could right myself once I got going. I always landed to play with my dogs in the very back of the yard. Then the mud monsters would come out of the ground, and I would lose my ability to fly no matter how hard I tried. I would end up running and hiding in the house before I woke up.

Mob mentality. I think the general tone is publicly acceptable, but it sure would be great if there was more direction with their message. When you look at the world though, life in America is so much more opportunistic that over 90% of the rest of the world. You can make a fairly

good, long life for yourself with a meager income, it just takes hard work. Things should be done to stop big corp. in politics (lobbying) but on the same note is selfish to call yourself the 1% while a child is bloating from starvation somewhere else. Kind of a slap in the face. Generally I support the movement, because at it’s core it’s people speaking their minds with little to no censor, and that’s a great mark for this nation. The Place Between Sleep and Awake Lou Vang

IF YOU WERE TO DIE OF FEAR, WHAT WOULD IT BE FROM? Turkeys. It seems irrational, but I have an intense fear of Turkeys, it doesn’t matter if they are alive or dead.

NAME THE TOP 5 PLACES YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRAVEL TO AND WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO AT EACH LOCATION. [1] Romania. I would love to visit Dracula’s castle! [2] Mexico, to spend the night on the Island of the Dolls. [3] Germany, to see where my family is originally from. [4] Wyoming, to visit family I haven’t seen in 15 years. [5] Alaska. I would like to be there in the winter and see how well I could survive the elements.

WHO IS THE MOST INSPIRING FIGURE IN YOUR LIFE? HOW HAS HE/SHE AFFECTED THE WAY YOU LIVE RIGHT NOW? I would say my mother, her choices in life have inspired me to not make the same mistakes as she has. Through her, I learn who I want to be and who I don’t want to become.

IS THERE A PERSON IN YOUR LIFE YOU TELL ALL OF YOUR SECRETS TO? IF YES, WHY DO YOU TRUST THEM SO MUCH? IF NO, DO YOU THINK YOU COULD KEEP THIS SECRET TO YOURSELF FOREVER? No. It’s hard to fully trust anyone these days and I most definitely know I could keep my secrets to myself forever.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR LIFE? FAMILY, RELIGION, EDUCATION, MUSIC, OR ANYTHING ELSE. HOW DOES THIS MAKE YOU WHO YOU ARE TODAY? My kids are the most important to me, they made me grow up and become a better, more responsible person. They have made me who I am today.

WHAT IS YOUR RELIGION? I do not “have” a religion. I was raised Christian, but being forced to believe in my parents ideals made me rebellious to the whole religion thing. I believe in being spiritual and good.

EXPLAIN YOUR THOUGHTS ON OCCUPY WALL STREET AND THE OTHER 99%. I don’t really have any thoughts about Occupy Wall Street, I can’t say that I even know for sure what the purpose is. I don’t keep up on politics and news, I find it to be too depressing and quite confusing.

WHAT’S A HABIT YOU WISH YOU COULD STOP? WHY DO YOU WANT TO STOP THIS HABIT? This question is right up my alley. The very first thing that comes to mind before anything else is cigarettes. I have now reached the point where I smoke about two hand-rolled cigarettes per day. This is less than ever before for me. I want to smoke ZERO cigarettes per day because I believe they’re poison.

YOU’RE GOING TO DIE IN 24 HOURS. WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR THOSE NEXT 24 HOURS? I would spend part of the time

with my mother and sister and extended family members if possible and I would call up a couple of ex-girlfriends to spend time with, and in the remaining time I would attempt to procreate.

A MALICIOUS WIZARD DECIDES HE WANTS TO GET RID OF ALL THE FOOD IN THE WORLD. HOWEVER, HE DECIDES TO BE COMPASSIONATE AND LET’S YOU PICK WHICHEVER FOOD/DISH YOU WANT TO BE KEPT ON EARTH. WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE? Tofu. TELL US ABOUT ONE OF YOUR OLDEST SCARS. HOW’D YOU GET IT AND WHY? My oldest scar is at the top of my forehead at the hair line, or widow’s peak. It is about one inch long and is mostly concealed by the hair. I was a child of six jumping up and down on a recliner chair and I decided to make a flying leap off of the chair, only to hit my forehead on a table’s edge.

IF YOU WERE TO DIE OF FEAR, WHAT WOULD IT BE FROM? Standing below a tsunami tidal wave.

WHO IS THE MOST INSPIRING FIGURE IN YOUR LIFE? HOW HAS HE/SHE AFFECTED THE WAY YOU LIVE RIGHT NOW? I don’t know how this sounds to oth-

ers, cliche or whatever, but it truly is my mother. She displays more discipline and strength than I do still, she’s the most amazing person I know. She gives endlessly to others but still works endlessly to survive on her own.

EXPLAIN YOUR THOUGHTS ON OCCUPY WALL STREET AND THE OTHER 99%. I don’t know a lot about these protests other than they seem to be a reaction to a declining economy for the lower and middle classes based upon constitutional rights and are reminiscent of the protests of the 1960s.

[1] I would like to go to Paris and see the Eiffel Tower and visit the great perfume houses. I love perfume. [2] I would like to go to Venice and take a gondola ride and eat lots of gelato-chocolate please. [3] I would like to go to Prague and see the Charles Bridge. [4] I would like to go to Iceland and experience the Midnight Sun and see the glaciers. [5] I would like to go to Vienna and indulge in all kinds of pastries, Sacher Tort and whipped cream.

IS THERE A PERSON IN YOUR LIFE YOU TELL ALL OF YOUR SECRETS TO? IF YES, WHY DO YOU TRUST THEM SO MUCH? IF NO, DO YOU THINK YOU COULD KEEP THIS SECRET TO YOURSELF FOREVER?

IF YOU COULD BE ANY SKIN COLOR IN THE UNIVERSE, WHETHER FICTIONAL OR REAL, WHAT COLOR WOULD IT BE? ANY PARTICULAR REASON WHY? I would choose to be white (Caucasian), the color I am now. This is because white people have a much easier time of it in the world of yesterday and today. I’m not saying I agree with this in any way, as I am not a racist, but it has always been my opinion that white people have an easier time in school, in job hunting, and how they are treated overall. It is better than it used to be, but there is still a long way to go.

IF YOU WERE TO DIE OF FEAR, WHAT WOULD IT BE FROM?

I tell almost all my secrets to my best friend, the same friend I have had for 45 years. We tell each other things we don’t tell anyone else. That said, there are a few things I have never told anyone else, and these are secrets I can keep forever. I am a Scorpio so I am naturally secretive but I think the few things I haven’t told anyone are because I am ashamed of them.

EXPLAIN YOUR THOUGHTS ON OCCUPY WALL STREET AND THE OTHER 99%. I can understand the frustration of the occupiers but on the other hand, I am afraid they veer very closely to socialism and maybe even communism. No one gets a free ride but they seem to want one. Also, how come they all have iPhones and fancy cameras that they make videos with, post on Facebook and Twitter? Someone worked hard to buy these gadgets. Their parents perhaps? They really need to find a job and work hard, advance through determination and work, and maybe they can have more than they have now. What good does camping out do? How are they paying for food? How come they have all this free time to camp out?

WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING FROM YOUR PAST? WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE? AND WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE NOW IF YOU MADE THAT CHANGE? I would not have been unfaithful in my marriage. I think if I hadn’t done this, my marriage would be stronger because my husband would not doubt me, the other man would not have been hurt when I ended it, and I would have more respect for myself. It is my biggest regret and I would definitely choose not to repeat the mistake.

I think if I were to die of fear it would be on an airliner that had serious problems. I am seriously afraid of flying and am only able to fly with medication, but if the plane started to have some problems that I was aware of, and it seemed if a crash was imminent, I would die of fright. No question about it.

WHO IS THE MOST INSPIRING FIGURE IN YOUR LIFE? HOW HAS HE/SHE AFFECTED THE WAY YOU LIVE RIGHT NOW? The most inspiring figure in my life was my father. We would do art projects and bake sweets and frolic around. I would definitely do her hair.

IF YOU COULD BE ANY SKIN COLOR IN THE UNIVERSE, WHETHER FICTIONAL OR REAL, WHAT COLOR WOULD IT BE? ANY PARTICULAR REASON WHY? White, it’s what I’m comfortable with.

TELL US ABOUT ONE OF YOUR OLDEST SCARS. HOW’D YOU GET IT AND WHY? I have a circle scar on my stomach

that I got from my bike handle bar (with no grip) jamming into it when my cousin pushed me down because I was beating him in a race.

WHO IS THE MOST INSPIRING FIGURE IN YOUR LIFE? HOW HAS HE/SHE AFFECTED THE WAY YOU LIVE RIGHT NOW? The most inspiring figure in my life is my mother. She taught me how to be strong, persevere, work hard, be kind, and not take life too seriously.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR LIFE? FAMILY, RELIGION, EDUCATION, MUSIC, OR ANYTHING ELSE. HOW DOES THIS MAKE YOU WHO YOU ARE TODAY? The most important thing in my life is my family. WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING FROM YOUR PAST? WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE? AND WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE NOW IF YOU MADE THAT CHANGE? I would not have done drugs in my youth. IS THERE A PERSON IN YOUR LIFE YOU TELL ALL OF YOUR SECRETS TO? WHY DO YOU TRUST THEM SO MUCH? I tell all of my secrets to my kitty. Some of my secrets are too embarrassing to tell another human being. My kitty is very good at keeping secrets. She listens attentively (as long as I am petting her), never interrupts, never judges me, never laughs at me, and still loves me no matter what I tell her.

IF YOU COULD BE ANY SKIN COLOR IN THE UNIVERSE, WHETHER FICTIONAL OR REAL, WHAT COLOR WOULD IT BE? ANY PARTICULAR REASON WHY? Shimmery, purple-like shark skin. The kind that has subtle color changes depending on what angle you look at it, and how the light is hitting it. Why? Just because it would look wicked cool.

IF YOU WERE TO DIE OF FEAR, WHAT WOULD IT BE FROM? The fear of a world that is destroyed beyond livability. I am scared that we will make our home, our Earth, uninhabitable pretty soon.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR LIFE? HOW HAS THIS MADE YOU WHO YOU ARE TODAY? Nature is the most important thing in my life. I love to walk, sit, swim, soak up Nature in any and every way I can. It also informs my work as a teacher of holistic lifestyles. Everything I do is about respecting Nature and helping others see the importance of Nature and living in a way that is in tune with nature.

I so admire and appreciate the work that anyone involved in the movement is doing. I hope OWS makes a positive difference in the end, and doesn’t just fizzle out because change is hard. These are hugely entrenched systems that OWS is trying to change, and the 1% is way invested in their “power.” They won’t give up without a fight, a dirty fight. Thank you to all the people willing to go to jail for the message. Thank you to all the people working for peaceful change. Thank you to the people who cook and protect and protest and expose and do all the things that need to happen for the movement to continue and succeed.

WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING FROM YOUR PAST? WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE? AND WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE NOW IF YOU MADE THAT CHANGE? If I could change anything from my past, I’d change

that moment when I stopped singing my heart out. During church, I had a solo for a performance. For rehearsals, the kid next to me laughed and I assumed it was because of my singing though I never really knew the reason why. So for the real performance, I sang real quiet with another person. I wish I sang at the top of my lung. Perhaps I would have had more confidence than I do now. IF YOU COULD BE ANY SKIN COLOR IN THE UNIVERSE, WHETHER FICTIONAL OR REAL, WHAT COLOR WOULD IT BE? ANY PARTICULAR REASON WHY? I’m quite convinced zombies are going to take over in the future. To ensure my own survival, I would like my skin color to be a blue-ish green color. I’ll just cross my fingers and hope I don’t run into any zombie killers and get killed like Bill Murray in Zombieland. YOU’RE GOING TO DIE IN 24 HOURS. WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE, WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR THOSE NEXT 24 HOURS? I would spend the first 12 hours trying to find every possible way to live any longer. Maybe venture out for the fountain of youth or make a deal with the devil. If nothing works, I’ll force myself to stay awake and start writing letters. To the people I love, tell them their good qualities and how they’ve made my life so much more worth it. To the people I hate, tell them they should feel guilty and treat people better. IF YOU COULD SAY ANYTHING TO THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? “If you find yourself troubled by something mysterious or a problem that’s hard to solve, there’s a place you can go where you always find help. You just need to look for it.” –From Baron of The Cat Returns WHY DO WE REMEMBER SOME DREAMS FROM OUR SLEEP AND FORGET ABOUT OTHERS? Maybe it’s because we’ve got to get away from the real world sometimes. And when we remember those dreams, the world we got away with won’t cease to exist. IS THERE A PERSON IN YOUR

LIFE YOU TELL ALL OF YOUR SECRETS TO? IF YES, WHY DO YOU TRUST THEM SO MUCH? IF NO, DO YOU THINK YOU COULD KEEP THIS SECRET TO YOURSELF FOREVER? I do have a secret that I haven’t told a soul. It’s just a personal secret and in the future, I can for sure see myself telling that secret to my future husband…but for now, I’m keeping my lips zipped and can do so for eternity if I must. WHAT IS YOUR RELIGION? PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW YOU CAME TO

BELIEVE IN THIS RELIGION. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A RELIGION, PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW YOU CAME TO NOT HAVE ONE. DID FAMILY OR FRIENDS INFLUENCE YOU? OR A CERTAIN EXPERIENCE THAT MADE YOU REALIZE WHAT WAS REAL/UNREAL? I believe in God. The sole reason why I’m still a Christian is because of my parents. You know, the

average Asian family would be especially concerned about grades and education. Well, that’s what stereotypes say. But we’re not an average Asian family. My parents are more concerned about my religion and who I believe in than they are my education. They aren’t concerned about 10 or 20 years from now for me. They’re concerned about…what happens after I’m dead. I mean, wow. WOW. The majority of people willing to save and welcome my people when the Secret War was going on were Christians. I think there’s a lot right there as to why I believe in God. If there wasn’t God, I wouldn’t be right here, right now. And you wouldn’t be reading this either. EXPLAIN YOUR THOUGHTS ON OCCUPY WALL STREET AND THE OTHER 99%. Is there going to be a big enough change that will affect me? I can’t see it. I feel like people just want to be in control but like Spiderman’s uncle always says, “With great power comes great responsibility.” I don’t think the 99% can handle that responsibility, especially when they think rioting is the only way to make a stand. I’m not siding with the so-called 1% either. I just feel like there are bigger problems in this world than money, money, and more money.

Quips, Quirks & Thoughts About Things Leah Monson

cause I like to sculpt and paint and do collages and stuff, so artwork for the home. What is a habit you don’t do, but wish you did? Organize. I think that’s a good one. I’m so not organized but I know people who need things to be like in their spot and I always try to get there, but halfway through the semester it gets hard.

Woodbury, MN | Age 20 If you had to eat one food everyday forever what would it be? Pasta (as she’s making pasta).

Describe your favorite color without naming the color or any objects that are that color. Relaxing and calm, with a hint of vibrancy. What would you like for yourself after you die? I guess...what’s the word, I have a feeling... serenity. Yeah, like a disconnection from worry or fear. If your future spouse had to have either a cartoon’s voice or a cartoon’s body, which would you prefer? Speak and look like Prince Philip from Sleeping Beauty. Uhhh, he’s so dreamy, I’m sorry. Swoon me! What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done and gotten away with? I really haven’t done anything that bad. I think I feel the most proud about skipping school in high school. I wrote fake notes all the time because I had very mature handwriting. I must’ve written at least 15. I wrote a lot...at least 15. Then I’d go downtown and smoke in the car with my friends. Yeah, downtown Minneapolis!

Describe your dream holiday, real or imaginary. I would want to go around maybe like small European towns whether it’s through Switzerland or provinces in France with my husband and just kind of like, see the world for a Christmas break or something and see how other people celebrate that time of the year. Ahh, I should have said The Holiday, cause then I would have Jude Law! What do you want me to know or feel compelled to tell me? I’m going to quote a quote. It’s by Robert Fritz. “If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want and all that is left is a compromise.” What is your biggest intangible fear? I have a fear of not using my talents to the best of my abilities. What is your preferred method of travel? Horseback, or carriage...either work! What if the world operated solely on bartering and services? How would you survive? I would probably draw pictures for peoples’ homes. I don’t wanna do portraits but like, yeah art of any sort

What is your favorite word? Becoming. Because it stands for change and new direction in one’s life and I feel that it’s necessary. It stands for transformation in life if you wanna go somewhere or just develop your mind, and we should always be in search of new goals and paths. Please to describe in great detail, something that you shouldn’t. I have a lot of anxiety that I am not living my passion on a daily basis and I used to have a lot of confidence issues when I first came to college because I didn’t seem my skills or talents as prominently as other people’s within my ma jor and it’s still a battle that I’m trying to get through. Especially since I’m going into a ma jor that relies solely on one’s confidence and ability to sell their ideas. What’s something you do virtually every day that most people don’t? I shower in the middle of the day. I don’t shower in the morning or at night because then it’s less cold. If you could add two commandments to the existing ten, what would they be? 1) To keep one’s humility. 2) Respect yourself. Explain your thoughts on Occupy Wall Street/ The 99%. I think while there may be a lot of greedy people in the 1%, I think there is also an ignorance on both ends, and the grass is greener on the other side and there’s now way you can get all the info of what it’s like to be on the other side. The 1% may think that they had the same opportunities to get to such a point, and that maybe the 99% is lazy, while the 99% may think that the 1% took advantage of them and created a system that would continue for them to fail. So I think there’s just a big misunderstanding and lack of communication in a respectful manner.

What is the sexiest/most beautiful food? Burritos at Chipotle make me hard. Yeah, it’s very good. Burritos. Chipotle. If you had to paint every wall in your hourse (and the exterior) one color, what would it be? I don’t think there is a name in English. Light blue…azzurro, not blue but the light blue, ya know? What would you like for yourself after you die? I don’t care. I don’t know what happens. I don’t think I go to heaven. Cool. If your future spouse had to have either a cartoon’s voice or a cartoon’s body, which would you prefer? I don’t understand nothing. I don’t watch cartoons, but I have no idea really…I don’t watch nothing. What is something you really regret? (laughs) I can’t remember now because there is a lot of these things, but one things I get in trouble, god damnit I can’t remember! Regret nothing. Perfect. Everything is perfect for now. No regrets. If I have regret I am not like this. (laughs) I don’t have real regrets, maybe for one day sometimes I have real regrets, but the day after I think about it, is not a real regrets. Gahhh, it’s fucking hot here! If your actions had no repercussions, what would you do habitually? I always dreaming about cane crudo. Sorry is not nice, not bad dreams. If you could be any musician, who would you be? Jesse Monson because he’s cool. Would it scare you more to know EVERYONE’S thoughts or to have them know yours? Mahhh! I don’t wanna read the other people minds. If you could time travel permanently (forward or backward), which way would you go? I don’t wanna go forward and back, I’m good like in the present. What if careers didn’t exist?

If I have study, and there is no job for what I have study, it is very hard, but no problem. I have studied a lot of bullshit and I’m sure I have no job when I go out cause the world sucks. It’s difficult, but if you can’t explain you find something, but is not easy find a cool job. What is your favorite word? (laughs) Is figa! Because is short, it has four letters, and uh…is easy to say and uh…I think a lot of this word, and uh is very very good! Cause is short, and make a good sound. FIGA! FIGA! Figa! Fuck fuck! Figa! Fuck! Where do babies come from? From the sperm and the women cell. The power of the nature! YEAH. Would you rather eat a gallon of your least favorite ice cream every morning or have a one night stand every night? One night stand. I wanna cane crudo everyday if is possible. If you could add two commandments to the existing ten, what would they be? The commandment sucks, but are commandments so you have to...I can’t explain, fuck. Nobody respects the commandments. 1) School is good, but only I can’t explain...fuck. Impossible! I have some problem explaining in Italian, so in English I think it is impossible. Is complicated shit I think, really. 2) I have a difficult to choose to make the choice, I need the four points of the other questions, is I need a lot of time for make the decision. Is bullshit. But when I make a lot of time to choose the decision is bullshit, but after is good. I think too much. Explain your thoughts on Occupy Wall Street/The 99%. OCCUPY WALL STREET, AHHHH!! Umm…I don’t know. Clouds? (laughs) How will you die? CANCER. Body cancer.. If you had to remain yourself, which cartoon would you switch your life to permanently? Dragon Ball Z. (pumps fists!) Cause it’s fucking epic. What is something you really regret? Lots of shit. I regret crashing my car because I don’t have any money anymore. I owe the bank like $2,000. Yep.

QUIPS, QUIRKS & THOUGHTS ABOUT THINGS |LEAH MONSON |158

If your actions had no repercussions, what would you do habitually? P. Cause it’s mean. What is the most unsettling dream you’ve had? I was at home and my dad was shouting at my mum and she hopped in the car and I went to stop her by grabbing an axe and chopping up the car and I was hard out chopping up the car and we like...beat her up. It was really fucked. It was with a sledgehammer. We beat her with a sledgehammer and caved her face in. And I’ve had dreams like that before… fighting people and your punches don’t do anything to them, and you just end up tackling them and punching their head until their head caves in and it ends up really cartoon-like. Like this kid called Jeffrey Bunker… glass bead artist, and he’s real skinny and he was wearing a helmet. I don’t know why I was fighting him.

What would you do in life if money were not a constraint? Fuck, I would just travel everywhere and see you. Buy houses everywhere I go. So I’ve got a house everywhere in the world. No no…chase the sun! Like... chase summer! For the rest of my life! Would it scare you more to know EVERYONE’S thoughts or to have them know yours? I’d rather know people’s cause I don’t want people knowing what I’m thinking. If you could time travel permanently (forward or backward), which way would you go? I’d go forward cause, what if you went like too far forward and there was like nothing there…yeah. I would go forward because I could see all the technology and stuff like that.

“It’s like everything...in a bun.” What if we started as old people and regressed? I reckon it’d be dumb, and it wouldn’t work. So like, you start off sick and dying, and then slowly get better and pretty much die again. Name an object that inspires you. I’m not even thinking about anything, but it feels like I’m not thinking at all. List five things you despise about either yourself or your significant other. 1) (As he’s eating a chocolate pastry:) What I eat. (glances at pastry) but… nah I like this! I like this. 2) I need a haircut. I don’t like my hair. 3) You could say I don’t like my little toe, but you know I don’t really mind it. So.. chuck that down. 4) My kink ear. 5) I don’t like my posture.

Would you rather eat a gallon of your least favorite ice cream every morning or have a one night stand every night? I reckon the one night stand things, but it’s kinda hard. You’d get grodee people potentially. But the ice cream would make you sick….every morning? Fuck that. If you could add two commandments to the existing ten, what would they be? 1) Something to do with money being not allowed..no money. 2) No ownership of land. Explain your thoughts on Occupy Wall Street/The 99%. I reckon the whole idea is good but it’s also just like a bunch of hippies, a new era...starting a whole new era of stupid hippies. Maybe? I don’t know. They’ve got a right cause, but what will they actually do? What can they do? There should be some kind of better organization for people to look up to, a main group...a government kinda inside of it which everyone is controlled by in a way, but it’s all democratic.

Do you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain?

What would you do in life if money was not a constraint?

No. I don’t like the taste of pina coladas and it would depend on where I was going and what I was wearing. Like a white shirt? That would suck…that has happened.

Travel. I would’ve gone to a different college. Franklin University in Switzerland. They wanted me for culinary arts. I’d buy a car that wouldn’t die on the freeway during snowstorms.

What do you think society/the world would be like if color didn’t exist?

What’s the opposite of fear?

Depressing as all hell. Then blind people wouldn’t feel left out. It would force you to look at things in a different way. It would suck but I’m sure you could find some sort of way to appreciate shit. I would feel less self-conscious about being pale. I would look even more ghostly. Oh well.

Courage. Wisdom. Well if you’re afraid of things that means you don’t have knowledge about or are still wondering things about it, so you don’t know about it, or if you did know then you would be more afraid. I don’t know.

Where were you on September 11, 2001?

The United States. Really. That’s not true there are places I wanna go here. I’d like to go to the Sydney opera house but I really don’t give a shit about Australia. Not that I don’t give a shit about it, but I when I think about Australia it’s like beaches and surfing and I’m sure when they think of America they’re like, ‘hamburgers,’ but beachy places don’t really interest me unless it’s the Mediterranean.

Science class. Mr. Larson’s class and he was trying to tell us to like, shut up so we could listen to the radio but he didn’t tell us what happen so we were just running around and he was trying to explain the history of it, Al Qaeda the Taliban, and it made no sense to us because we were in 6th grade. A plane hit what? I didn’t understand the magnitude of it until I got home and my dad said, ‘this is what happened Kelle.’

Which cartoon do you relate to most? I was thinking Pepper Ann because she’s weird and awkward, but my mom isn’t quite that crazy and my sister isn’t mistaken for a boy that often, but based solely on the fact that she’s weird. And I just like the theme song. Maybe a little bit Arthur Read, not to take the main character and be like ‘I’m just like him!’ but I think I relate to Arthur more than any other TV show, I like food a lot like Buster and I’m competitive like Francine. Arthur understands books; I understand books. And his dad makes really strange chef things that no one really likes.

What is a country you have no desire to travel to?

What if careers didn’t exist? It’d be hard to make money. We would all be starving artists, not all of us, but we would. Well men and women would be far more equal. No they wouldn’t. There would still be other ways to belittle and marginalize women, but it’d be one less thing I guess. There’s always been more female teachers then male teachers so in that sense of pay-rate there’s never been an extreme difference but with corporate CEOs, the ratio of men compared to women and how much they are paid and the difference is because one of them has a penis.

What gives you butterflies?

Are accidents accidents?

Christmas. Jim Sherraden. And other things that shouldn’t be written down.

Maybe. Sometimes. Well if it’s not an accident, then its not an accident, right? Not to be redundant. Redundancy department of redundancy.

Please to describe in great detail, something that you shouldn’t.

What is the best moment of the day? Probably whenever I get to go to bed, whatever time that may be.

Describe your dream holiday, real or imaginary? Fuck. This would be a long holiday and Petey and I would go to London because we’ve always wanted to and we wouldn’t get sick of each other at all and I could talk to her about fashion endlessly and we could go to museums and I could teach her things...art things! We would got to all these literature landmark things cause she knows everything about English and then you and RT would show up somewhere along the line and we would hang out and it would be lovely and then we’d go to a soccer match. And then I’d live there forever and it wouldn’t be a holiday because it’d be permanent!

QUIPS, QUIRKS & THOUGHTS ABOUT THINGS |LEAH MONSON |160

Sometimes, more than sometimes, I wonder if we’re all just robots stuck inside these suits acting out our day to day activities. Some of us have nicer suits than others, but essentially soul-less zombie robot creatures. Instead of having innards and organs and bones we have batteries and wires, which would explain why some people treat each other so terribly. Which gets me to wondering if I actually have any control of my thoughts or actions and maybe this is just how I was programmed, which makes me think if that’s the case then people can’t help being assholes. Which also gets me to thinking that through my robot eyes I can look at a mirror and see myself but maybe other people see me entirely differently because they’re eyes are made up of different wires or something. And because I’m programmed to view myself in a certain way, that is what I will always see in pictures, videos, whatever. Other people may see the same exact picture, video, or whatever entirely differently. So maybe if people are mentally unstable then there actually ARE loose screws in their head or whatever the expression is. And if all of our

wirings are different and we see things completely different from one another then how do we know what is reality? Would there be reality? If each of us robot creatures see an entirely different world what do we have to judge and compare to? Don’t ask what drugs I’m on.

What’s something you do virtually every day that most people don’t? Most people my age don’t hang out in their onesie before they go to bed. Some might. I mean not EVERYDAY…chilly days.

What if god was one of us, just a slob like one of us? It wouldn’t be god then. And he kinda looked like a slob too as it was. I don’t know religion things. I just make a fool of myself.

Explain your thoughts on Occupy Wall Street/The 99%. I get what everybody is saying but this isn’t anything fucking new. It’s always been this way and I don’t understand why just now people are starting to do something about it. It’s not even that people are doing anything about it; they’re just complaining. It’s not like with Scott Walker where there were specific things that were being petitioned for or asked but with this it’s a bunch of people being angry just to be angry but what is anyone supposed to about it? Yes, it’s infuriating. If people don’t come together and make a list of demands like ‘we want this to change,’ then it’s not going to happen. No one’s going to listen if they’re just waving signs outside their windows. With Scott Walker there was a specific goal in mind. We want things to be better, or we want you to be paid less. It upsets me too but now it’s just a bunch of noise, but they’re not trying to get anything done. You need to make some sort of goal. Instead of ‘you need to get paid less and we need to get paid more.’

Pomponesco, Italy | Age 23 How are M&Ms made?

I feel like M&Ms could be made in little colorful fabric where there are little tiny men that break the peanuts and then cook the peanuts and coat the peanuts with cream made of chocolate and whatever, and cook again these little candies then they paint them by hand. It could be cute! Yeah.

What do you think society/ the world would be like if color didn’t exist? Amazingly sad. I don’t usually dress with many colors. Like all my clothes have neutral colors like white or beige or grey but sometimes red but I’m not that bold in dressing, but I like markers, I like colored pencils, stuff for the house, gadgets, un-useful gadgets that are colored and they make me happy. I like matching stuff that’s colored. It might sound weird but sometimes I just take a white piece of paper and I just color it randomly then I look at the colors and they relax me. I don’t know it mights sound stupid. I feel like a world without color wouldn’t make sense and it would be extremely sad.

What would you like for yourself after you die? (laughs) That’s a tricky one. Well I would like to meet people that I would probably never meet in my own life or people that died before I was born or people that I find interesting or that I’m interested in, like famous people that died a long time ago.

“Oh he’s cute, he’s nice, I like him!”

Which cartoon do you relate to most? Probably the first thing that came to me is the Little Mermaid because she wants to be somewhere else in a place that makes her feel more comfortable. She doesn’t like being in the sea; I don’t like being in Europe. I don’t like being in Italy I don’t like being somewhere else. It’s also a cartoon of my childhood. I love the songs and that it’s set in the sea world.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done and gotten away with? Well first of all let’s say that smoking weed is a bad thing but my parents never found out, but I don’t consider it the worst thing I ever did, not at all. On the contrary actually.

What is a habit you don’t do, but wish you did? Playing music. All the time. Or trying to at least.

Do dreams tell you something or is it random bullshit? I don’t think it’s random bullshit. I think the brain sometimes elaborates things that you did or saw or that you thought about like let’s say you thought about something one day and the night of that day your brain elaborates what you thought about and makes it like a dream, you know? And those things happen in your dream or maybe you saw something that struck you, god damnit, yes, and then the night of that day…I don’t know. You still have a dream about it.

What do you want me to know or feel compelled to tell me? Well I have this news, and it’s highly possible that I’m COMING TO VISIT YOU NEXT AUGUST.

What is your biggest intangible fear? My biggest fear, is..oh god. Ok this might sound like fucked but I don’t like walking alone at night because I’m afraid of being raped. That sounds fucked up, but, oh yeah. I hate clowns. I’m damn afraid of clowns, really. It’s stupid but they’re creepy. Or I find them creepy.

What is your preferred method of travel? Daydreaming.

What if the world operated solely on bartering and services? How would you survive? I would be a cook!

What gives you butterflies? When somebody you like just looks at you and almost looks at you inside, with a deep deep deep look. That you almost have to take your look away. Or when you just look at the person you like doing something else, and you just think, ‘Oh he’s cute, he’s nice, I like him!’

Where do babies come from? (laughs) They come from love?...most of the time.

QUIPS, QUIRKS & THOUGHTS ABOUT THINGS |LEAH MONSON |162

Would you rather eat a gallon of your least favorite ice cream every morning or have a one-night stand every night? The second? Maybe it’s more pleasant than the first one.

What if god was one of us, just a slob like one of us? (sings the song) God doesn’t exist.

Explain your thoughts on Occupy Wall Street/The 99%. I wish I was there. I mean the same protest took place in Rome though it was literally ruined by the black bloc movement. When the Occupy Rome took place almost a month ago there was this group of people that were wearing black clothes so their faces couldn’t be recognizable and they literally ruined the protest that was peaceful protest by setting on fire cars and breaking shop windows and all that shit. But anyway, I wish I’d been at the protest here in Rome or anywhere else. I feel like they have the right to protest, plus I’m part of the 99% too like most of us so I was with them kinda with my mind.

FABIOLA SAMUELI

LAKE ELMO, MN | AGE 21

Do you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain?

I do not like pina coladas, but I like getting caught in the rain. Strong hate for coconut.

If you had to paint every wall in your house (and the exterior) one color, what would it be? I would have a very loud house. It would be red. It would scream at you every time you walked by.

Where were you on September 11, 2001?

I was in 6th grade in our upstairs classroom and we were all just sitting. This girl came in late, called in advance, had heard on the radio, that the event happened, so we turned on the TV. It got announced. I remember it was like one column of desks, I was the third one... sitting there.

If you had to remain yourself, which cartoon would you switch your life to permanently?

I think the world would just be spring boards, you can just be jumping around doing whatever…hey I wanna go to Australia! Spring board right over there.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done and gotten away with?

When I was a senior in high school. I would ditch out of first period class, and actually leave school grounds and my mom worked in the office. She had no idea.

What is a habit you don’t do, but wish you did?

I think it would be experiencing anything that’s illegal without the consequences or damaging effects.

Describe your dream holiday, real or imaginary.

I think my dream holiday would be going to Australia and exploring the down under.

‘FIRST OFF, I WOULD NEVER HAVE A CAT. I’D PROBABLY PUNCH IT ACROSS A FENCE.’

If you could be any musician, who would you be?

I would say like the lead singer from White chapel and his ability to scream, it’s like, as my friend would call it ‘polar bear-esque.’

Would it scare you more to know everyone’s thoughts or have them know yours? I think I’d be more afraid of them knowing my thoughts. There’s just so many things I wouldn’t feel comfortable telling someone and having them know I was thinking it. ‘Hmm, I really hate this person, I wish I could punch them in the face everyday.’

If you could time travel permanently (forward or backward), which way would you go?

Forward to see the advances in technology. I’m just kind of a nerd like that.

Where do babies come from? Well then! This is slightly awkward.Babies come from mating (laughs).

If you had a hairless cat, would you tattoo it? If so, what would you tattoo?

First off, I would never have a cat. I’d probably punch it across a fence. It’d be nice for practicing tattooing if I never got into that, I would have to do it on myself. And then if people thought it was cruel? Put a sweater on the cat.

Where did we all come from? God created us.

Explain your thoughts on Occupy Wall Street/The 99%.

I don’t even know what it is. I’ve only been kinda hearing the name and title and stuff so I have no thoughts or opinions on it.

What if we started as old people and regressed? This is gonna sound bad, but it might work out well to regress back to an infant when it comes to grave space, but you could fit them in like a shoe box! Save space and money! And then it would be like the parents taking care of their children not parents raising their children but children raising their parents.

What is your favorite word?

Indubitably. I will find any means to use it in a sentence, and it applies in so many ways. It’s like a happy emphasis.

ASHLEY MONCRIEF MONCRIEF ASHLEY

Hudson, Wisconsin | Age 23

What is the sexiest/most beautiful food? Probably macaroni and cheese cause it’s warm and gooey!

What do you think society/the world would be like if color didn’t exist?

Do dreams tell you something or is it random bullshit? I think they tell you something, but mostly it’s random bullshit. But there was that research on dreams and memory and you dream to consolidate memories that you’ve made and integrate them with other memories.

“BECAUSE...I MEAN I CAN’T CREATE THE UNIVERSE; I DON’T KNOW IF YOU CAN CREATE UNIVERSES.”

Probably about the same. I guess everything that we color coordinate we couldn’t do that. Shade coordinating. We’d fill our happiness with shade differences. That’s a nice shade combo. 50 names for different shades of grey.

If you could be any musician, who would you be?

How will you die?

What is your biggest intangible fear?

I don’t know. I don’t plan on dying, but if I do die I’m sure it’ll be broke. I’ll die broke.

Which musician had the coolest life? I’ll be that musician. Probably somebody that sold out. I think I’d be David Bowie. Oh I’d definitely be in Labrinyth.

I’m afraid of ghosts. Girls also make me really nervous.

Which cartoon do you relate to most?

What is your preferred method of travel?

Fry from Futurama. Cause I’d wanna hang out with him.

I guess while I’m traveling I should be enjoying myself shouldn’t I? Definitely drugs. And boats. Well…sailboats. And non-motorized wheeled vehicles, such as a bike. Longboards. Rollerblades even. Maybe one of those razor scooters. Or one of those things you slide under a car with...take one of those down a hill.

What is something you really regret?

My biggest regret is probably not listening to Ween at a younger age. Things could be different.

What is a habit you don’t do, but wish you did?

I wish I made a habit of fixing things. So I could fix things...listening to Ween.

What if the world operated solely on bartering and services? How would you survive? That’s T hat’s the plan. Hopefully in five years I can do away with cash money and stick solely to goods.

DUGAN DOYLE

Where do babies come from? I think it’s just like...you take an egg, add sperm and it gets baked in a woman, then 9 months later you take it out...or it gets itself out, or you take it out...you remove it...so then you have a baby. So yeah that’s…

List five things you despise about either yourself or your significant other. 1) I’m strange in social situations. 2) I bite my nails. I don’t really do that much. It’s alright. I quit once and I was like ‘screw that’ but then I tried to quit again after that. Now that I’m done with school I think it’ll be alright. 3) I don’t like how much I like consumer goods. I wish I didn’t like pointless stuff so much. 4) I wish I didn’t have a garbage can. 5) Nothing. Five is far too many things to not like about yourself.

If you had a hairless cat, would you tattoo it? If so, what would you tattoo? Not if it started to scream when I was giving it a tattoo, but probably not cause tattoos cost money, or I’d probably draw on it with markers...only if was painting myself. I’m allergic to cats, so maybe I would. They’re just so weird looking. I think I’d get one of those really wrinkly ones.

What if god was one of us, just a slob like one of us? He wouldn’t be god I suppose. He’d just be like another dude. Because... I mean, I can’t create the universe. I don’t know if you can create universes.

Explain your thoughts on Occupy Wall Street/The 99%. Oh not much. I’ve just kinda been waiting for something more exciting than that to happen. I hope they do something like riot. That’d be good. I’m going to go with the apathy route.

Q.

Describe your favorite food without saying any food names (texture, color, etc).

21 Female x

A.

It’s a very simple shape with only two colors, very bright and cheerful and always makes you smile. You can prepare it more ways than I can count and know how to. It’s so pure in it’s flavor that it’s usually best without altering its flavor, adding other ingredients to it can be good also.

Q.

Describe emotions associated with your favorite color without saying the color.

A.

Simple, classic, edgy, dark, and sad.

Q.

If someone could just disappear and have it go completely unnoticed, who would you want it to be and why?

A.

Half-sister. Liar, cheater, excuse maker, plays

the system, uses others, moocher, hypocrit.

Q.

What is a fear that you have that you are too proud to admit?

A. That I’ll never make of myself what others expect I will in life and that I expect I should.

Micayla Sipe

X

Q.

Tell me about a thought you have or have had that shouldn’t be said out loud.

A.

That I think someone is ugly or fat. Terrible that I judge people in my mind when I can be easily judged in the same way.

Q.

What is the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?

A.

Turkey Testicles.

Q.

What is the most unsettling dream you’ve ever had?

A.

Watching my mom and my sister get their heads chopped off. Or one of my best friend’s funeral. I woke up bawling and believed that she was dead and had to call her just make to sure that she was alive. Even after that, I couldn’t stop crying for about an hour and couldn’t go back to sleep.

Q.

How do you feel about one-night stands?

A.

I think they could be fun, but a little scary with

not knowing what diseases people may have. But I’ve never had one because I’ve been in a relationship for five years, so maybe that’s why I’m okay with them.

Q.

Regardless of what you believe, what if you’re wrong?

A.

My motto:

“I may not know when I’m wrong, but I know when I’m right” It’s okay to be wrong, sometimes it’s just harder to take than other times.

Q.

What is the most damaging secret that someone knows about you?

A.

It’s so damaging that I don’t even want to write it down.

Q.

If someone could just disappear and have it go completely unnoticed, who would you want it to be and why?

A.

My mother because I want her condo.

Q.

What is a fear you have that you are too proud to admit?

I have a fear of losing my teeth. Q.

What is a thought you have, or have had that shouldn’t be said out loud?

No matter what I think, I could be wrong. We all could be wrong. Something could always happen tomorrow.

Q.

What is the most damaging secret that someone knows about you?

I didn’t know that she was married. A.

Q.

What would inspire you to do an illegal drug? Which drug would you do?

A.

Not a lot, but probably heroin so I can be heroin chic and lose a couple of pounds and go down like all of the rock stars.

Q.

Explain your thoughts on the 99% debate (or Occupy Wallstreet).

A.

In theory, general supporter of both-better protests on the government level.

Q.

If you could eliminate one innovation from history, what would it be and why?

A.

Refrigeration because it would force people to eat locally and within a very short radius. It would force people to store food for shorter terms.

Q. Have you ever let an innocent person take the blame for something you did? If yes, explain. If no, what would be a circumstance that you would?

A. I like to take responsibility for my actions. Especially if it could cause problems. People respect you more for taking responsibility right away and accepting that you did it wrong. Q. What would inspire you to do illegal drugs and what drug would you do?

Mexican cartels with lots of money, dealers, and soldiers. A.

Q.

Explain your thoughts on the 99% debate (or Occupy Wall Street)

A.

Occupy Wall Street has turned into Occupy Disease, Occupy Sexual Assault, Occupy Shitting on Police Vehicles, and Occupy Third World Country. These people came to prove a point, now they are sitting in feces and piss, waiting for someone to change, because they are too fucked to have a normal life. Let them rot in their parks and fields. Don’t give them medical emergency help, let them show us why the rich should take care of the poor.

Q.

How do you feel about one-night stands?

A.

Hate them. Sexual exploration is great, until you tell someone that you want to be in a relationship with them, then I hate them.

Q.

Regardless of what you believe, what if you’re wrong?

I know how I feel, and usually have a pretty good rational sense of being.

Q.

What if you could eliminate one innovation from history, what would it be?

A.

The monetary system. It was at that point in time that people didn’t have to know a service anymore, just had to get paid for doing services for others poorly.

Q.

If you could time travel, what era would you go to, where would you go, and why?

A.

America, although there is too many to mention. 1926 so I could fight for America in WWII, and live a respectable life without all these disrespectful kids running around that I have to avoid.

I am not the person everyone thinks that I am. Just below the surface there is a different me. Ask me what I am thinking and you will be surprised. I am bored by most people around me, but find enjoyment in listening. I use alcohol to suppress this, as it makes me more talkative.

Q.

Have you ever let an innocent person take the blame for something you did?

Yes, I let a friend get in trouble in elementary school for having someone elses things in their desk. I put them there.

Q.

How do you feel about one-night stands?

A.

As much as I enjoy sex, I want someone to confide in more. Some to talk to. Someone that gives a shit about what you are saying. Someone that hugs you back, someone that wants to be around you. When you find that person, the one that your thumb goes to when you pull out your phone to tell someone the big news.

Q.

Regardless of what you believe, what if you’re wrong?

I think about this all the time. There are so many religions, they find ancient people’s with different religions than we have today. How can religions that started so many years after people began be entirely correct. How can so many different religions have so many different beliefs.

It goes with everything, it is stylish, it can be casual, it makes me feel beautiful, it is low key, it makes me happy when I wear it, it blends well, my friends like it and so do I. I feel ok liking it, I feel comfortable with it.

Q.

If someone could just disappear and have it go completely unnoticed, who would you want it to be and why?

A.

My mother in-law. I would have her disappear because she could then go somewhere and figure out her problems with me in her life and come back and be ready to discuss them and work them out. SHe could stop being awful to us and finally figure out what she needs in the relationship and be ready to handle it and work it out as an adult using adult ways rather than childish ways. It would go unnoticed as she would choose to make it happen that way and then when she came back her behavior would be positively noticed rather than negatively noticed.

Q.

What is a fear that you have that you are too proud to admit?

A.

A fear that other important people in my life will die without me having had enough time with them here on Earth.

Q.

How do you feel about one-night stands?

A.

I feel that if they are going to hurt someone then it is bad If the 2 people go into it with full knowledge of what the other is thinking and are fine with it, then if it works for all and all are clear on expectations then people do what they are going to do. I have never done that but don’t feel it is my place to judge others on what they need in life.

Q.

Describe the worst accident you’ve ever seen or been involved in (not necessarily a vehicle accident...).

A.

I used to work at the ER at UW-Madison I was a secretary there and a family of 6 had been hit by a train all 6 unbelted passengers died and i have never heard so many cries of agony nor seen so many bags of blood coming out of someone’s body. Horrible, but also taught me the shortness of life.

Most damaging secret. Hmm, I’m not sure I have one. Probably that they know that my brother had bipolar and was a victim of suicide. It is not a secret but is also not something I broadcast as many are not open to talk about things like that and have their strong opinions on how they feel about it. I gauge that depending on how they talk about many other things in life and that lets me know how open they are to a subject like that which is filled with so much stigma.

Q.

It’s grey. Then pink. You classify its size via how much there is so the larger the number, the smaller the size. There’s a shell, there are legs, there are eyeballs, there are heads, veins. Split along the back and the best alone. Every place will skimp you on this when you order it because it’s expensive in the Midwest.

Gloomy though not quite--depends on the viewer. Perhaps this color is bipolar? It’s definitely muted and quiet though. Never screaming for attention.

I’m scared of staying this way forever. I’d love to change. I really would but change can’t happen overnight. Change is weird when it begins. People question your motives, start to say you’re not who you used to be, they start to doubt you. It’s scary, sad, depressing at the same time that people think it’s WEIRD you’re changing. Describe the worst accident you’ve ever seen or been involved in (not necessarily a vehicle accident...).

So in my culture, we like to kill a cow... and at the same day, eat it at a big party with everyone else. So my parents decided they’d take the slaughter cow to our house and we’d slice up the chunks and everything there. Skinning and slicing a cow is a pretty long process. I’ve never actually seen it but all I know is that the elders are up early in the morning and they manage to cut up big chunks by about noon. So this one time, the cow that was slaughtered actually had a baby calf inside. It was so sad. They were cutting up the cow and then news went around the house and I heard that they found the baby inside. I caught a glimpse. They were washing it with the hose outside and of course, it wasn’t alive. It was dead and it was so sad and I don’t recall whether or not they decided to eat the calf too but yeah, that was an accident I wished hadn’t happened. What kind of farmer doesn’t know that their cow is pregnant?

Interview with the authors:

How has your idea of adventure changed with age? Timothy Hirschey Caitlin Teague I think of adventures as everyday possibilities instead of exotic quests. When I was a kid an adventure meant doing something fantastical like going on a quest Micayla Sipe Mackenzie Owens and traveling to far away places. Lou Vang When I was a kid, adventure was always about being chased by carnivorous dinosaurs. It was almost always composed of imaginary events that could never occur in the real world. Nowadays as an adult, adventure requires opportunity and action. We’re not satisfied with our mere imagination. We either have to act upon that imagination and attempt to make something real or go look for this so-called adventure ourselves. I think as a kid, we had more freedom and less things to worry about. Now as adults, we don’t have that kind of freedom anymore. Work. School. Bills. Chores. We’re constantly pulled back by reality. Adventure comes with a journey and if it’s a good one, you’ll get something out of it. Otherwise, it really isn’t an adventure.

we make adventures with what’s called choice

Susie Lepro Adventure use to be a nameless, faceless idea that only exceptional grown-ups experienced. My little escapades as a child were miniscule in proportion to that ideal. Now, I’m not quite so hard on myself! I understand that adventure is literally what takes place everyday - it’s seeing what is normally mundane and understanding the vast magnitude of what it really is. A road trip with a friend used to be just an experiential - fun - yet inconsequential thing. Now it’s monumental in my mind because I know God planned the whole thing before the beginning of time. Awesome.

John P. Corrigan Adventure is neither a specific activity nor a preconceived destination. Adventure is tangential. Adventure is an experiential learning process. In the past my adventures were seemingly dictated by specific physical activities or challenges. Previous adventures had a presumed beginning and finite end. I have learned that adventure is a series of choices—each leading to the next. I find the idea of an adventurous journey to be reflective. Adventure is no longer associated with a sense of danger but a sense of curiosity and play. I no longer define adventure as risky or hazardous. I can claim that I have an adventurous palette. I enjoy food and the experiential aspect of food; new and foreign tastes are not scary, but open to interpretation and reflection. Adventure is a conscience activity, which informs a journey. My first trip to New York was a great adventure. I was asked by a relative stranger to accompany him on his road trip to New York City. My first reaction was filled with skeptical resistance. I used previous assumptions to protest my participation. It was not danger I feared, but change. The trip was not scheduled as previous trips had been. This trip was suggested with two days notice—unthinkable. The trip involved driving a van filled with wood and wood working tools and a nine-week-old puppy. The trip involved interaction with a person I did not know or fully understand. I did not fear the van, the puppy, or the man but the unknown. I questioned previous vacations. I questioned previous relationships. The trip was amazing. It was filled with new experiences, new inspirations and aspirations. I was challenged. I was questioned. All of this was reciprocated with my host. We both talked and exchanged ideas and philosophical contemplations. We both became aware of ourselves through our journey and interaction. This adventure has personally informed every road trip since that day of growth, fate, luck, and trust. Adventures that I remember with great fondness began with the unknown, became experiential, and continue to be reflective. Neither assumptions nor preconceptions encourage the idea of adventure, they only subvert the idea of freedom. An adventurous spirit can challenge even the idea of a destination. My idea of adventure now includes an open and fluid destination with the open expectations that continual influences will affect my journey.
