“A Role in History: the Rising, the Great War, and a Shared Past” A man may objectively inherit a role in history, reluctantly or with devotion, soldier, functionary, rebel…. – John Hewitt, Mosaic Welcome to the 29th John Hewitt International Summer School, a celebration of culture and creativity – which this year for the first time has been extended to six days. During the week we will feature talks, readings, theatre, performances, discussions and workshops. We will look at the influences – cultural , political, economic and historical – that led both men and women, Nationalist and Unionist, to choose various ‘roles’ in 1912, 1914, 1916, and consider the factors old and new on those who have enlisted in numerous conflicts since then. We will explore how historical narrative, media, culture, literature and the arts have kept the record straight, or have been harnessed to politically and culturally divisive ends. In response to feedback from previous years, audiences now have the opportunity to purchase and enjoy lunch from The Market Place Theatre Bistro or the local facilities of Armagh during an extended lunch break. The Summer School has been extended into the weekend to include a major event on Friday night, with new workshop offerings on Saturday morning as well as optional opportunities to take a walking tour of the city with Visit Armagh.

ART EXHIBITION DIS-EASE Foyer Walls, 25 July – 13 August When the poet Moyra Donaldson and photographic artist Victoria J. Dean became interested in each other’s work, they expanded and challenged their individual practices, collaborating across the disciplines of poetry and the visual arts. They agreed on the theme, Dis-Ease, which spanned concepts of disease, unease or discomfort. The collaboration took an organic course and the result was a publication and exhibition consisting of a series of images combined with poetry.
