Located on Autauga Creek, Prattville was destined to become the “Birthplace of Industry in Alabama,” when Daniel Pratt selected the site to establish his cotton gin manufacturing company in 1833 – a company that went on to become the leading cotton gin producer in the world. Pratt was a New Hampshire native who grew up familiar with the industrial villages of New England, so when the architect-builder settled here to create an industrial village around his plant, he modeled the homes after those back home.

The antebellum Buena Vista Mansion, built circa 1822, allows visitors to view a beautiful example of early plantation homes in the Deep South. Prattville is home to one of the most popular sites on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Capitol Hill. The site’s three 18-hole championship courses have earned praise from Golf magazine and the Zagat Survey of America’s Top Golf Courses.

When true outdoorsmen aren’t trekking through the wild, they can probably be found at Bass Pro Shops. Prattville’s Bass Pro Shops, which is the first in Alabama, is no exception, where activities from fishing to backpacking are represented.

Experience Prattville’s past through a series of exhibits and artifacts from Autauga County’s history at the Prattaugan Museum. Displays include the new Black History Month and WWII exhibits. The museum also has an extensive document archive.

rogress and preservation flow together harmoniously in Prattville, as smoothly as the creek that helped first put the city on the map. City founder Daniel Pratt established Prattville along Autauga Creek in the late 1830s, building his cotton gin manufacturing factory near the fall line to use the water for powering the machinery. This made the city known as the “Birthplace of Industry” in Alabama.

Industrial-Strength Plans Prattville Partners LLC, a partnership by Longstreet Capital out of Atlanta, is in the process of preserving and converting those now-empty factory buildings into a cool residential development in the historic heart of the city. The transformation is expected to begin by early 2013. “The mill buildings are such a central component to our downtown both

historically and structurally,” says Joel Duke, Prattville’s city planner. When founding the city, Pratt also set aside areas for businesses, churches, schools and residential areas within his new town. Property owners, in conjunction with the Autauga County Heritage Association, have preserved many of these homes and buildings that make up the Old Prattvillage area of downtown Prattville today. w w w. liva b ilit y. c o m / P r attvill e

And still flowing through it all is what many refer to as the jewel of the city – Autauga Creek. Pratt wasn’t the first to see the creek as a liquid asset. Native Americans established a village not far from where the city is today, naming it Atagi (“water”) which gives the base to the creek’s modern name. Creek for the Community Thanks to the hard work of naturalists and community leaders, Autauga Creek has evolved to suit the needs of the community. Once a critical resource to industry, the creek today is enjoyed by kayakers and canoeists, as well as walkers and joggers on the trail alongside it. The Autauga Creek Improvement Committee formed in 2011 with the goal of cleaning

up the creek and revitalizing the Autauga Creek Canoe Trail. Committee President Iris Korthauer says the best things about the creek now are that it is gorgeous and free. Thanks to the committee and the efforts of its members, the creek trail, which technically was established some 25 years ago, is now vibrant once again. Korthauer says the committee is working on putting maps and kiosks along the trail so people will know where to put in and get out of the creek. Creekwalk and Creekwalk Garden, just behind City Hall near downtown, are also vital elements to the future of the creek and the town.

“Excellent, authentic” and “incredibly friendly” are words used to describe Uncle Mick’s Cajun Market and Cafe on West Main Street in downtown Prattville, where alligator piquante is on the menu, as well as crawfish.

Steak and Seafood Head to Cow-A-Bun-Go to grab a ribeye, filet mignon, sirloin or burger to go, or call and have it delivered. The restaurant caters to those with an appetite for grilled meat but without a lot of time. If you prefer seafood, check out Islamorada Fish Co., located inside Bass Pro Shops. While fish and shrimp are the specialties, the Fish Co. also offers salads, stuffed mushrooms and more. Downtown

Way Off Broadway Theatre offers shows, acting lessons and special events. Founded in 2002 as part of the Prattville Creative and Performing Arts Council, the community theatre presents approximately four productions annually including drama and musical theater. In the 1830s, Daniel Pratt bought 1,000 acres of land to build a cotton gin manufacturing plant along Autauga Creek. Today, the Daniel Pratt Historic District covers 140 acres and includes 154 buildings. Grand residences are also part of Prattville’s landscape. The Bell House, a two-story Queen Anne beauty that was completed in 1893, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Buena Vista, a distinctive Greek Revival home, has attracted admirers for nearly two centuries.

The Prattauga Art Guild brings fine arts and art education to the entire region. The Creative Arts Center is home to the guild’s permanent collection, featuring works by Prattville’s own internationally known artists. Or, you can paint your own masterpiece at Artistic Expressions, the area’s largest “painted by you” pottery studio. Special events also nurture the local arts scene including ARTrek and the Prattauga Art Guild Juried Fall Show, which takes place annually in October.

Other events include a pumpkin patch and the Halloween Candy Walk, a Christmas parade, outdoor movie nights, a Mardi Gras parade, the Fountain City Arts Festival and CityFest, an arts and crafts event.

Golfers know Prattville for Capitol Hill, one of several sites along Alabama’s famed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and one of Zagat’s Top 50 Courses in America. Capitol Hill has three 18-hole courses - Judge, Legislator and Senator. The Prattville Country Club also draws golfers to its 18-hole course. There, club members and guests also enjoy its Olympic-size pool and a cabana, and its restaurant serving steaks, fresh fish and fine wine.

You’ll find dozens of creeks, streams, ponds and lakes all within a short drive in Prattville. The Alabama River lays just to the south, offering a prime waterway. One of the most popular places to play is Cooters Pond Park located right off the river. With two boat ramps and docks, a riverwalk, basketball court, dog park and open green spaces,Cooters Pond offers families an enjoyable day on the water or the land. Bear Creek Hunting Preserve in nearby Autaugaville offers sportsmen hunts for trophy whitetail, quail, dove and wild turkey. Both individual hunters and groups are welcome. One of the region’s most distinctive parks is the Wilderness Park, which features giant oriental bamboo that lines a short walking trail and shoots up more than 60 feet in the air. The park, established in 1982, was the first of its kind to open within a city in the United States.

At the end of the heated, six-week contest, Prattville’s beloved Pratt Park beat out more than 16,000 others to become “America’s Favorite Park.” In addition to taking top honors, Pratt Park won a $100,000 recreation grant from the CocaCola Live Positively Initiative. New Superintendent A new superintendent now serves the 13-campus Autauga County Schools district. Spence Agee, a former principal at Prattville Junior High, is a third-generation educator with 16 years of experience in the teaching and administration field 25 years of military experience and earned a bachelor’s of science degree in education from Alabama State University. The district serves approximately 10,000 students in grades kindergarten through 12, with reading and math achievement levels consistently exceeding the state average. The system’s athletic programs are also highly touted in football, basketball, baseball, tennis, soccer, golf, track and softball.

Private Options Families that prefer private education in Prattville can choose East Memorial Christian Academy, Autauga Academy or Prattville Christian Academy, all of which offer pre-K through grade 12 instruction. PCA, a non-denominational Christian school, enrolls approximately 600 students, and its curriculum includes physical education, music, art, drama, foreign language and Bible classes. Autauga Academy, founded in 1969, has approximately 400 students and offers students a general and college preparatory curriculum in a family environment with Christian values. Air transportation options include Prattville’s Grouby Field, which has a 5,400-foot runway; Montgomery Regional Airport, just 12 miles from Prattville; and Birmingham-Shuttlesworth that is about 75 minutes away from home. Interstate access is made easy by Interstate 65, running along the eastern edge of Prattville and extending from the Gulf Coast to just southeast of Chicago. Prattville is home to the Economic Development Association of Alabama, a leader in workforce development and business investment in the region.

There’s no shortage of local retail and service businesses in Autauga County. Downtown Prattville has two hardware stores, a grocery store and specialty shops, making the area a lively and convenient place to shop. River Region United Way The River Region United Way helps fund 46 agencies in three key impact areas – education, income and health. In 2011, the organization served more than 140,000 people. The largest United Way contributor in Autauga County is International Paper, followed by Publix. “Thanks to a company match of 60 cents for each dollar pledged by employees, International Paper collectively donated more than $131,000 this year,” says Melody Colvert, director of the River Region United Way-Autauga County. “Publix pledged more than $51,000.” Many of International Paper’s 500-plus employees volunteer with agencies that receive United Way funding, which gives them a personal connection. “I am continually amazed by the commitment and generosity of our employees,” says Don Forst, mill manager at IP Prattville. “I – and the entire board – appreciate their dedication. United Way Kickoff Event In August 2012 United Way held its annual kickoff at the Prattville YMCA Willis Bradford Branch. “This was the second year for the Bradford Branch to host this wonderful event,” Colvert says. “Alabama Power Co. employees volunteered their time to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for 200 people who attended. At our kickoff, International Paper donated 1,200 reams of copy paper to the Autauga County Board of Education. Prattville area Chamber of commerce begins push for more tourism

The Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce will be working even harder in the next year to help more people discover Prattville. “Prattville is directly off Interstate 65 near the intersection of Interstate 85, and many motorists travel through this part of Alabama each year,” says Patty VanderWal, Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce interim president. “We want more of those motorists to visit attractions in Prattville, especially now that the economy is starting to turn around.” Some of those attractions include mainstays such as the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill, plus the newly revitalized Autauga Creek Canoe Trail and the High Point Town Center retail plaza near I-65, for which a new leasing company has promising plans. Meanwhile, the chamber focuses on its 750-800 members and maintaining its impressive retention rate. “Membership has remained stable the past few years. Our retention rate each year is more than 90 percent, and we are always attracting new members,” VanderWal says. “New businesses open often in Prattville, which is always encouraging to see.” by Kevin Litwin
