“A boy’s problem? – Safeguarding our girls from extremism” The rise of the far-right and the continued global reach of groups like Daesh/ ISIS as well as a new wave of terrorist attacks in 2016/17 in the UK has once again put extremism on the forefront of our minds. While we tend to read less about young women and girls as prominent actors in extremist groups and attacks, they still play an increasingly vital role in these movements. Radicalisation is a complex social process that is indiscriminate of gender, age, social or economic backgrounds, ethnicity, race or religion. While schools, alongside other public institutions, have a legal obligation to safeguarding young people from being drawn into extremism and build resilience, the responsibility is upon all of us as a society and parents play a particularly important role. To live up to this responsibility, we need to get a better understanding of the radicalisation process, what can make young girls and women vulnerable to extremism and how extremist groups use targeted recruitment tactics to make their groups appealing to young girls. Charlotte Kathe is the Prevent Education Office at Southwark Council. She has an MA in Terrorism, Security and Society from King’s College London. She previously worked for the global counter-extremism think tank ISD where she worked on projects with companies like Facebook and led an international policy network on countering radicalisation and polarisation. Charlotte is an excellent speaker and parents will, we are sure, find her insight very interesting.
