You are all different, so no two journeys are the same. Within a strong and clear framework, we’ll give you individual challenges that are fun to achieve and right for you and we’ll guide and look after you all the way. Our 22 acres are the perfect oasis for sport and picnics with friends. You can swim in our state of the art pool, enjoy judo and salsa lessons in the dance studio, scale the climbing walls or play games in the sports hall. With every turn comes inspiration and discovery. The arts are also woven into the fabric of our school. Musicals and drama are performed by all ages. Our older girls enjoy a professionally designed theatre and drama studios and play in concerts both on site and in central London venues. All our facilities are designed to feed hungry minds, such as our well-stocked and enticing libraries and equally stimulating art rooms with the rich textures and vivid combinations of soft and bold colours. Our Design and Technology suites fire the imagination, allowing budding inventors to spread their wings, and our specialist Science and language laboratories create an exciting world and intellectual adventure. Everyone finds something to their taste at JAGS. But they also discover talents they never knew they had.

Whatever you enjoy and however you wish to excel, JAGS is the school for you. We celebrate and encourage academic, creative and practical success equally. There are so many opportunities here. Look around you: your peers will inspire and encourage you. Celebrating their achievements in our assemblies will make you proud to be part of our journey together. Success at JAGS is wonderfully diverse: for example, national cross-country running, public speaking, poetry and essay writing, ‘Young Art’ prizes, TeenTech Consumer Innovation Awards, gold awards in the national Maths challenge and triumphs in modern languages competitions – we love applauding achievement. Girls raise £1000s for charities every year, achieve the European Computer Driving Licence, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, places in the National Youth Orchestra and have become national Biathlon champions for five consecutive years – all these achievements are celebrated. But it’s not just big headlines. Very human things make JAGS a better place, such as being presented with the pre-prep cup for kindness, or working as a mentor on our Saturday Literacy Scheme. It takes all sorts to fill the JAGS world and we value them all.

Inspections consistently highlight JAGS as an outstanding school, but we don’t take that for granted. We’re always searching for improvement by continually reflecting on current educational practice and shaping a future that works for our pupils. Without being elitist, we’re determined to create exceptional opportunities. Our teachers are well-rounded, real people, inspiring well-rounded, real young women. We focus on the whole person, not just their intellectual skills. We believe our pupils should be aware of the world and take a keen responsibility in preserving it for future generations. It matters to us that we have been awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag three times in succession. Assemblies dedicated to energy conservation, ethics and morality, government and politics – at every turn we encourage our pupils to look beyond themselves. And we share our resources, time and skills with local schools and organisations. After school and at weekends you’ll find our grounds and sports facilities alive with local people in our community sports club, children in classes in our hugely popular Saturday School for the Performing Arts, adults rehearsing in the community orchestra or choral society or young people engaging in SLYO, our South London community youth orchestra holiday course. We’re the oldest girls’ independent school in Greater London. Perhaps we get our dynamic, all-embracing approach to education from our founder, James Allen. His distinguished portrait bears the inscription: “Skilful as a Skaiter: a Jumper, ATHLETIC and Humane”. Alleyn’s College of God’s Gift began in 1619. James Allen was visionary; in 1741 he founded Dulwich Reading School in the centre of the village with the aim of teaching local boys reading and arithmetic, but also, unusually for the time, to take girls and teach them ‘to read and sew’. In 1886, with 141 pupils, the school moved to 22 acres of beautiful new grounds on East Dulwich Grove. Innovative thinking continued when Dr Lilian Clarke arrived in 1895 as our first science lab was built. She pioneered botany teaching, setting up the Botany Gardens in 1896, where girls still work today. Music was already firmly embedded within the curriculum, however it soared with the arrival of Gustav Holst as music teacher in 1904. Right up to the present day our approach to girls’ education, music and the community has set new boundaries and we are proud of this continuing tradition of innovation.
