COACHING STAFF

Director of Golf - Casey VanDamme, Fourth Year

Jumping in head first was what fourth year South Dakota State Director of Golf Casey VanDamme did when he took over the men’s golf program in 2014-15. Under his guidance, the Jackrabbits men’s golf team continues to make history, winning the program’s first Summit League Championship in 2016 and repeating in 2017. SDSU is the first team in The Summit League to win back-to-back championships since 2010. State is also one of five league teams since 1983 to make two-or-more NCAA Regional appearances. Since VanDamme’s arrival, he has coached four all-league selections, mentored all-academic performers and the Jackrabbits have rewritten the record book. He has also upgraded and transformed the Jackrabbits’ regular-season schedule. The two-time Summit League Coach of the Year has had The Summit League Player of the Year, a first-team All-Summit League selection three second-team all-league picks and four all-tournament honorees in the last three years. In the classroom, Grant Smith earned Summit League All-Academic accolades twice and was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon names All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America in 2016. Nine Jackrabbits have also been named to The Summit League Academic Honor Roll. In the SDSU record book, the Jacks set the 18and 36-hole records, the single-season record for rounds and career rounds. Smith finished his career under VanDamme with the fourth-lowest single-season stroke average (73.72) and third-lowest career stroke average (74.36). As a team, the Jackrabbits set the 36-hole and 54-hole records and posted the second-lowest single-season team scoring average (296.64) in 2015-16. South Dakota State moved from playing most of its regular-season tournaments within the region against regional opponents after VanDamme’s arrival. The Jackrabbits play, on average, 12 ranked teams per year and have defeated three top-50 teams. They have also played in Arizona four times, Florida, California, Colorado and Nevada twice each and in events in South Carolina and North Carolina. VanDamme also added an additional SDSUhosted tournament, The Jackrabbit, bringing in an elite field of golfers for a three-day event at The Dunes course at Prairie Club in Valentine, Neb. Ranked teams such as Clemson, Tennessee, Mc-

Neeses State, Arizona State, Texas A&M, South Florida and Oregon State have all made the trip to The Jackrabbit. SDSU has finished in the top five twice. Joining the Jackrabbits family in July 2014, VanDamme guided SDSU to a third-place finish at the 2015 Summit League Tournament and a pair of topfive finishes. Under VanDamme’s guidance, three of the seven returning letterwinners dropped their stroke averages, including second-team All-Summit League selection Grant Smith, who led the team with a 74.28 average, good for seventh in a single season at SDSU. In 2016, the Jackrabbits broke through, winning The Summit League Championship by 11 strokes. In their first NCAA Division I Regional last year, the Jackrabbits finished 11th, but captured the attention of the golf world when they were sixth after the opening round and Grant Smith was tied for first. VanDamme won his first Summit League Coach of the Year honor in 2016 while Smith was named the 2015-16 Summit League Player of the Year and first-team All-Summit League selection. Felipe Strobach earned second-team honors and was The Summit League Newcomer of the Year. Both Smith and Strobach also were named to the all-tournament team. The past season, SDSU captured its second consecutive Summit League Championship with a twostroke win. Smith won the individual title and was named the 2017 Summit League Championship MVP. Alejandro Restrepo was also named to the alltournament team after tying for fourth in the two-day championship. During the regular season, the Jackrabbits placed

fourth at The Jackrabbit Invitational, defeating then70th ranked Oregon State, and finished in the top 10 in six tournaments. VanDamme, who is SDSU’s second full-time golf coach, spent five seasons at Tennessee as director of instruction/player development, beginning in 2009. During his tenure, Tennessee equaled its best postseason stretch in school history with five trips to the NCAA Championship regionals, advancing to the 2010, 2011 and 2013 NCAA Championships. Prior to coaching the Vols, VanDamme learned the trade under renowned golf instructor Jim McLean. He spent seven years at the Jim McLean Golf School in Palm Springs, Calif., and Traverse City, Mich., becoming the youngest master instructor in school history. VanDamme has worked with PGA Tour players, including as an on-site teaching professional to a participant in the 2009 PGA Championship. He began his collegiate golf career at Marquette before finishing at Northern Michigan, where he graduated in 2000. VanDamme started his tenure under McLean in 1998 while still playing collegiately. He also played professionally on the National Golf Association Hooters Tour in 2003-04. From 2006 to 2009, VanDamme served as athletic director at Mid Peninsula High School in Rock, Mich., also working summers since 2005 with the CVD Golf Academy in Gladstone, Mich. He also served in 2008 as head golf professional at LochenHeath Golf Club in Traverse City. VanDamme and his wife, the former Jill Gobert, are natives of Perkins, Mich., and are the parents of daughters, Madelyn, Claire and Lizzy, and son, Andrew.

COACHING STAFF

Assistant Coach - Maggie Murphy, First Year Maggie Murphy enters her first season as assistant golf coach at South Dakota State. Murphy came to State after pursuing professional golf status from 2010 to 2012 and most recently played in the 2016 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur. The Sioux Falls native played in the 2011 U.S. Golf Association Women’s State Team Championship. Competing in the South Dakota Golf Association, Murphy was the 2011 Players Cup Champion, the 2010 Match Play Champion and the 2007 Amateur Champion. Murphy competed in 35 tournaments at New Mexico State from 2006-10, earning National Golf Coaches Association AllAmerican Scholar accolades and All-Western Athletic Confer-

ence Academic honors during her collegiate career. In 2006, Murphy was part of an Aggie team that captured the Price’s Give Em Five Intercollegiate title. Murphy earned a bachelor’s degree in community health at NMSU in 2010 and was a Crimson Scholar.

Brookings Country Club Brookings Country Club, home of the South Dakota State men’s and women’s golf programs, has long been recognized as one of the region’s best courses. The 18-hole, par-72, 6,800-

yard course was designed by Earl Bartling and Ward Waltz. It is characterized by bluegrass greens, which are lush and serene, fairways that are challenging, yet uncrowded, and a rolling terrain.

The Brookings Country Club sits on 167 acres 8 miles southwest of the SDSU campus. It has hosted numerous collegiate events and annually hosts U.S. amateur qualifying events.

THESUMMITLEAGUE Through 35 years of Division I athletics, The Summit League offers 19 championship sports and has a combined enrollment of nearly 100,000 at eight institutions, including three located in top 60 U.S. metro populations and two land-grant universities. Member institutions include: Denver (University of Denver), Fort Wayne (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), North Dakota State University, Omaha (University of Nebraska Omaha), Oral Roberts University, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and Western Illinois University, with the University of North Dakota becoming an official member on July 1, 2018. Previously known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League rebranded in 2007 and has since produced nine NCAA Champions, and over 100 All-America selections, 80 Academic All-Americans, and numerous former student-athletes competing at the highest professional level.

> In 2016, Denver men’s soccer became the first league team to reach an NCAA Final Four in any sport and achieved the highest national ranking (No. 3) of any men’s sport in league history. > South Dakota’s Chris Nilsen became the first freshman in league history to win a national championship when he claimed the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Pole Vault title. > The Summit League produced 19 All-Americans in 201617, including eight first team honorees, and nine Academic All-America selections, led by a quartet of first teamers. > Oral Roberts’ Matt Whatley won The Summit League’s first national individual honor when he was named as the Johnny Bench Award recipient, honoring college baseball’s top catcher.

A total of 15 Summit League squads achieved perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores in the most recently released figures. Those achievements came on the heels of several prestigious individual academic honors awarded to Summit League student-athletes, including: the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Capital One Academic All-America of the Year. The Summit League also produces the highest quality in competition. WELCOME TO SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY

South Dakota State University (SDSU) is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university. As South Dakota’s 1862 Morrill Act landgrant university, SDSU had a fall 2017 enrollment of 12,527 students from all 50 states and 81 countries. Approximately 67 percent of SDSU students are residents of South Dakota, 29 percent are from other states and 4 percent from other countries. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement. SDSU comprises Colleges of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, University College, Nursing, Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering and the Graduate School. The American Association of University Professors categorizes SDSU as a Category 1 or doctoral-level institution. The university has been designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and its Commission on Innovation, Competitiveness and Economic Prosperity is a major resource for the economic development needs of the state. Over the last five years, university research has yielded 195 invention disclosures, 79 patents filed, 9 patents issued and 47 license agreements executed through the Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization, resulting in more than $12 million in license revenue. SDSU Extension, with eight Regional Extension Centers across the state, is South Dakota’s source for objective, vetted and relevant new knowledge generated through research. Extension’s online learning portal, iGrow.org, served nearly 600,000 users with more than 925,000 page views last year.

STATE UNIVERSITY Legend of the Jackrabbit

There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSU team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

ADMINISTRATION

Dr. BARRY H. DUNN President

Dr. Barry H. Dunn was named the 20th president of South Dakota State University in April 2016, the fourth alumnus chosen to lead the institution. He took office in May 2016. Dunn received a bachelor’s degree in biology at SDSU in 1975 and subsequently completed two graduate degrees in animal science—a master’s in 1977 and a Ph.D. in 2000—at the Brookings campus. He became the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council endowed dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences in 2010. He also served as director of SDSU Extension and as a professor of animal science. As dean, Dunn led a college with some 550 faculty and staff, 2,800 graduate and undergraduate students, and a $78 million annual budget, including more than $20 million in grant and contract awards, fundraising and development. He shaped the academic and strategic direction of eight departments, spanning 18 degree programs, one regional research and outreach center, six research field stations and 14,500 acres of Agricultural Experiment Station research land. As Extension director, Dunn administered and set the vision for five program areas across two colleges and nine departments, as well as eight regional extension centers with a $12 million annual budget. He led a team of some 150 faculty and staff members and 3,500 adult volunteers. Prior to that, Dunn spent six years at Texas A&M University-Kingsville from

2004 to 2010, as executive director of the King Ranch Institute for Range Management. He first worked in Brookings as an Extension livestock specialist and as an assistant professor in SDSU’s Department of Animal and Range Science from 1997 to 2004. From 1979 to 1996, Dunn was a successful rancher, managing his family’s cattle ranch in Mission. In 2015, he was appointed to the South Dakota Habitat Conservation Fund by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, and to the Governor’s Pheasant Work Group in 2014. He served as an ex officio member of the ag advisory board for the First Dakota National Bank, Yankton from 2011 to 2016, and was a member of the board of directors for Padlock Ranch, Dayton, Wyoming, from 2009 to 2016. Dunn has a rich academic background, was a successful rancher and farm operator and is a published author and researcher. He is a nationally recognized expert in beef production and ranching systems, and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Range Management, the American Society of Animal Science, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He has a deep historical and cultural knowledge of South Dakota and South Dakota State University, and strong, statewide relationships with industry influencers and stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, university administration, faculty and staff. He lives with his wife, Jane Dunn, on campus. They have two sons, Thomas and Michael. 29

JUSTIN SELL Athletic Director

Justin Sell, who was honored as a recipient of the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year Award, has moved Jackrabbits athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University May 7, 2009. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Under his leadership, Jackrabbit athletics has continually made strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits have claimed 29 regular and postseason league championships in seven different sports since 2009-10. The broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy five times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16), along with winning both the Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a GPA of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years, and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all nine years in the league (2008-16). In January 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU Athletics. Learfield Sports directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights. Additionally, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes. Sell also has implemented other aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which have resulted in record average attendance for football during the 2009 and 2016 seasons, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club. Ticket sales totaled more than $1 million for the first time during the 2011-12 academic year, and has steadily grown to more than $4 million. In addition, the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction raised a record $1 million in April 2017. On the facilities front, Sell has overseen dramatic upgrades and expansion of competition and practice venues through development and implementation of the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center was completed in 2010, and Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, as well as other recent improvements to the home of

Jackrabbit baseball. More recently, construction of the $32 million Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex was completed in fall 2014. The facility, which serves as a competition venue for indoor track and field and as a practice facility for football and a number of other outdoor sports, contains one of only a handful of 300-meter indoor tracks in the country, as well as expanded facilities for sports medicine and strength and conditioning. In addition, work on the $65 million, 19,000-seat Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which serves as the home of Jackrabbit football, was completed in fall 2016. In fall 2014, Sell was appointed by the NCAA Board of Directors to represent The Summit League and Missouri Valley Football Conference on the newly formed Division I Council. He currently chairs both the Division I Transfer Working Group and the Student-Athlete Experience Committee. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.

MATT MAHER - Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration

service. Maher also served as a liaison to the baseball, soccer and ice hockey head coaches associations. Maher was also involved in managing and facilitating membership engagement on numerous Division I governance issues and committees. This work included coordinating the activities of and providing support to the following NCAA groups: Division I Council, Division I Student-Athlete Experience Committee, Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement and Division I Committee on Institutional Performance. Maher provided guidance involving policies related to amateurism and agent issues, recruiting concepts, cost of attendance, student-athlete well-being issues and strategic planning. Prior to his NCAA experience, Maher worked in the athletics compliance offices at Nebraska, Creighton and Omaha. Originally from Omaha, Neb., Maher earned his Bachelor of Science in finance in 2005 from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his Juris Doctor in 2008 from The University of Nebraska College of Law. While pursuing his law degree, Maher published two law review articles regarding specific topics within intercollegiate athletics and was the first graduate from Nebraska College of Law to receive a concentration and certification in intercollegiate sports law. Maher and his wife, Aimee, live in Brookings with their daughter, Sophia, and son, Dean.

Matt Maher joined the SDSU staff as the senior associate athletic director for administration in August 2016. He manages various day-to-day operations of the athletic department, including overseeing the business office, the sports medicine, and strength and conditioning departments, strategic planning and special projects. Maher is the primary athletics liaison for campus and community organizations and also serves as the sport administrator for the Jackrabbits men’s basketball, wrestling, volleyball and men’s and women’s tennis programs. Prior to joining SDSU athletics, Maher spent eight years at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national office, most recently serving as associate director of academic & membership affairs. In that role, Maher managed the student-athlete reinstatement process, which involved risk assessment and strategic management of cases with complex legislative matters and significant media attention. Through additional strategic initiatives, Maher created a decision-review process to effectively measure the consistent work of waiver teams, as well as implemented a program to reallocate staff time and resources in a more efficient manner to provide better customer

Senior Woman’s Administrator Since 1984, Kathy Heylens has dedicated her career to enhancing the lives of student-athletes as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Senior Women’s Administrator for South Dakota University. Her history with South Dakota State and its students is a long one, having become the institution’s first full-time compliance coordinator in 1990. Since joining the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, she has served as the sports supervisor for three athletic programs (women’s basketball, soccer and softball) and she has overseen other areas within the department (compliance, academic support and Title IX). Heylens is an active member of NCAA, The Summit League and campus committees. At SDSU, she serves on the Undergraduate Experience Committee, Diversity Committee, Behavioral and Intervention Team (BIT), the Residential Advisory Counsel, University Accreditation Committee and the Choices and Prevention (CAP) Committee. Within the athletics department, Heylens is part of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board, Hall of Fame Committee and the Compliance Team. A Watertown native, Heylens and her husband, Bill, live in Volga and have two grown children.

Jeff Holm joined the SDSU athletic staff as the senior associate athletic director for facilities and operations in July 2014, after spending 13 years in various roles at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. A native of Brookings, Holm brings more than a decade of experience in intercollegiate athletics in both coaching and administration to the Jackrabbits, the last four years as the associate athletic director at Augustana College after serving as an assistant athletic director from 2006-10. While at Augustana, Holm served as the Vikings’ baseball coach from 2001-06, and earned North Central Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2003 after leading his squad to the conference championship. Prior to taking over the Augustana baseball program, Holm served as the head baseball coach at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., from 1998-2001. He also served as the chair of the exercise science department at MU in 2001. A former baseball player at Minnesota State, Mankato, Holm earned a bachelor's degree in math education with a minor in coaching from MSU in 1993, and earned a master's degree in sport pedagogy from South Dakota State in 1997. While at SDSU, he served as an assistant baseball coach for the Jackrabbits. 31

SCOTT BROWN

Sr. Associate Athletic Director for Development

Scott Brown joined the Jackrabbit staff as the senior associate athletic director for development March 3, 2014. He manages all fundraising operations for the South Dakota State athletics department. He serves as the sport administrator for the Jackrabbits football and baseball programs. Brown came to State after serving as the director of development for UCLA Athletics. During his time with the Bruins, he oversaw major gift fundraising efforts for a variety of programs, and directed the implementation of a sport specific program endowment initiative and the creation of an athletics-specific planned giving program. Before his time at UCLA, Brown held a variety of positions at the University of Iowa. He started as an intern in the ticket office and eventually became the associate director of development. During his time in Iowa City, Brown managed the Hawkeyes’ annual fund and served as the liaison between the University of Iowa Foundation and athletic ticket office. Originally from Storm Lake, Iowa, Brown graduated from Simpson College (Iowa) with bachelor’s degrees in sports administration and political science in 2003. He added a master’s degree in sport management from Western Illinois in 2005. Brown lives in Brookings with his wife, Kristy, and their three children.
