PHOTOGRAPHER

DAN MACDONALD "I am particularly attracted to coastal settings, to the merger of land, sea, and horizon, and to its inherent minimalism."

I am a landscape photographer based in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. I prefer to stay close to home, capturing local scenes and settings, and highlighting the natural, rugged, and inherent beauty of the Maritimes. At one time, there were almost 400 hay barns on the Tantramar Marsh, dotting the landscape for as far as the eye could see. Now, only a dozen remain. They have long attracted photographers and painters to the area and have always been a symbol of the marshes. But, one day soon, the barns will survive only as photographs, and paintings, and memories.

I'm hoping to continue developing my style into something recognisable, travelling to other cities in the UK and further afield, combining a number of interests that include street art, graphic design, geometric shapes, music and abstract expressionism. Photo description: I began incorporating an ‘equals’ sign to my backcatalogue of photo’s in response to the current political climate. I later designed an ‘All Equal’ logo to create a striking but simple message. - Peter Rea

Photographer Peter Rea After graduating with an Illustration degree from Manchester Met University, I started a 365 daily photography project called 010110+, which continued for over 5 years. The process pushed me to experiment with city landscape images architecture and urban decay, as well as abstract macro shots and multiple exposures.

I was out and about one day, early Spring, and noticed this leaf frozen in a block of ice. It was apparent that Winter wasn’t quite ready to release its hold, going for one more blast before finally departing. I found such a harsh image also quite beautiful. " Guy Ricketts

VLADIMIR TOMIĆ

I finished with one of my long photo-walks and I was returning home. Usually I don't take photos while driving, but anyway my camera was on the seat next to me, turned on and ready. While I was waiting at the red light, I thought the scene in front of me was looking interesting enough to be captured.

JAAMZIN CREATIVE | 12

I'm Vladimir Tomić, a photographer from Belgrade, Serbia. I started taking photos actively in my twenties, first with my mobile phone camera, then with a second-hand point-and-shoot and finally I afforded a DSLR and a couple of low-budget lenses. Whenever I can, I wander around, trying to capture interesting scenes and moments. I am eager to hear feedback from as many people as possible. I am at your disposal for any kind of photo assignments.

"When my work is viewed I hope you will feel the energy as it was captured down the lens and enjoy the ethereal qualities of the forms as they have a delicate beauty that makes the image seem not to be part of the real world. I look for the interesting in the ordinary; it seems to sharpen my senses. I like looking for texture, shadows and reflections. The outcome is a personal exploration of my subject matter. I am always aiming for the point where form, function and meaning intersect seamlessly. Capturing the visual rhythms in natural flow is a way of gaining a glimpse of our environment we barely notice or have words for but connects us all." - Elizabeth JamesÂ

Photographer Elizabeth James As a child, looking down the lens was like a different world, a form of escapism. A world where at that age, I thought only I knew and understood because it was viewed through my eyes. I am drawn to the elements of nature.

LEVENTE TOTH "White Tranquility" - it was taken in an area called "The Swamp Forest" in Transylvania, close to my birth town, on a cold and rather misty day. The digital shot was later post-processed into a monochrome photo. Equipment: Canon EOS20D + 28-80mm lens.

Levente Toth was born in Transylvania and grew up in its Hungarian minority community during Ceausescu's totalitarian regime. He began his PhD in artificial intelligence in the UK in 1995, where he has been living since. "I caught the photography "virus" during my childhood in Transylvania, courtesy of a fully manual camera that was my 13th birthday present. I settled in the UK during my PhD studies, but my main fascination remained the juxtaposition of, and the contrasts between, seemingly everlasting historic places and their ephemeral inhabitants."

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography was always my companion all over the years. But I did not found the thing that touches my heart and made me constantly thinking about it. After trying different styles of photography I saw the work of international street and documentary photographers and was overwhelmed by the magic that lays inside this form of art. After running around with bulky gear for some years I stumbled about a new smaller camera and rediscovered the full joy of photography. As a Taoist and philosopher inspired by the writings of Lao Tse, Michael Ende and Seneca I try to be a good observer in the world of the ten thousand things that are going on around me. Today I try to mix architecture, street and travel photography without sticking only to one genre." - Nils Kuelper.

VISUAL ARTIST

BRENDA SALAMONE Love can make you "Kind of Blue." This work was inspired by smooth agate and the one who introduced me to smooth jazz. The contrast of smooth, polished agate against the sparkling crystals of a druzy pocket describe the chaotic and sometimes painful results of falling in love with the wrong one.

JAAMZIN CREATIVE |Â 18

"My work strives to express the inward significance of our true selves. Human beings are visual creatures, and it is in our nature to make judgements based on outward appearances. The matrix of stone on the outside of a geode may be drab and uninteresting, just a rock that looks like thousands of others around it, but when the treasure inside is exposed and polished, the dazzling results are breathtaking and priceless. The dull exterior of a geode rock had become a metaphor for my life and art. By breaking free and escaping the matrix, my true colors and artistry are able to shine." - Â Brenda Salamone

"I'm Levan Amashukeli aka Zmudart, Georgian artist, mainly working in Digital Art, Digital Collage and Neonaive Art. My works represent memory shadows - persons, images, emotions, which are strongly anchored in my imagination. This works show my emotional state of art regarding my environment, very fragmented, chaotic, overwhelmed with information and colors, but at the same time ironic. " - Levan Amashukeli

PAINTING I'm Dorian, a surreal scratchboard miniature artist. My artwork consists of scratching away layers of colored ink (dripping/covering with plastic and other organic elements), to create texture and imagery. Using sharp knives, a fiber glass brush, steel wool and other tools, I reveal and create highly detailed miniature dreamscapes. I have been experimenting with this medium for 12 years, always challenging myself and bringing this medium "experimental scratchboard", to a new level. I always feels inspired and transported into an infinite surreal world full of bright colors, deep contrast, fantasy images, and miniature beings awaiting to be revealed. As I continue in experimenting and evolving with this medium, I become more aware of my own purpose in life: "To recognize oneself a microcosmos and all living beings as one with the universe; to bring awareness of the collective consciousness through art as a healing tool, and to awaken by accepting and loving one another just as we are. I am one with the Universe, therefore creativity is infinite. - Dorian Monsalve

Scratchboard miniature artist Dorian Monsalve This dreamlike landscape "Lucid Dream I" arose from the depths of the subconscious mind through a meditative state, inspired by music, nature and sacred geometry. Images continue to emerge as I continue etching or scratching the surface. This work also relates to transpersonal and visionary art, portraying mystical and spiritual revelations.

PAINTING

As a pastel artist I feel that pastels have a great vibrancy and richness of colour that is often under appreciated. I work largely from photographs and undertake commission work as well as create artwork in a wide range of subject matter. I like to give each piece a three dimensional effect and detail is of importance to me - each 12in by 16in artwork takes me 25 to 30 hours to complete. I have completed a large number of works in the past 15 years, many of which can be seen on my website. I admire the work of many artists including the Impressionists, PreRaphaelites, David Shepherd, Simon Coombes and many of my contemporaries. I have exhibited widely in Herefordshire and currently have original work exhibited at the Sable and Hogg Gallery in Brecon, Wales. My next exhibition at home during Herefordshire Art (H-art) week between the 8 and 16th of September. "The Aviator" is an interpretation of a image by an unknown photographer using soft pastel and pastel pencils on Colourfix pastelboard. This image attracted me because his character shines through and he must have appealed to others as he sold very quickly. I enjoyed capturing the details and creating a 3D effect in the completed painting using layers of colour. I use a mixture of Rembrandt and Artspectrum soft pastels for the background and a mixture of Derwent (soft), Conte ( medium). Cretacolour ( hard ) and Faber Castell ( hard ) pastel pencils. I sharpen them with a blade and sandpaper to get a fine point for the fine details of the hair, beard, eyebrows etc. Ivan Jones

Pastel artist Ivan Jones I am a retired veterinary surgeon who has become a pastel artist. Born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, I now live and work in the heart of the Herefordshire countryside. I was introduced to pastels as a teenager by a friend of my father’s and in fact I still have remnants of my first set of pastels. JAAMZIN CREATIVE | 25

VISUAL ARTIST

MIGUEL SOPENA The Dénia series: The Tower, 120x90 cm, oil on canvas. The Tower is the first painting in my ongoing Dénia series, inspired by the town in Eastern Spain where I spent many Summer months with my family as a child and adolescent. These paintings do not refer to specific imagery but are based on emotional and sensory impressions accumulated over the years- Colours, sounds, textures, the mountains and the beach, the sea and the wind.

JAAMZIN CREATIVE | 26

I am a London-based artist, originally from Eastern Spain. I trained as a figurative artist with a focus on portraiture and the human figure but my practice has broadened to include abstract and semiabstract painting, printmaking, and photography. In addition to the human figure, I draw inspiration from nature and the urban environment as well as from purely abstract ideas. I am interested in the material properties of the painting medium and often use impasto and heavy textures. Colour is another strong focus of my work. The expression of emotion is always at the heart of my practice.

WATERCOLOR ARTIST

WAYNE WOLFSON When traveling people often take photos which are overly personal and so meaningless to anybody but themselves or alternatively, all the suspect sights and subjects. I have made it a point on all my travels to document what i am seeing in a different way. I want it to engage the viewer who most likely does not know me. As with all my work, I lean towards a density of composition and in this case, a poetic beauty from the mundane.

JAAMZIN CREATIVE | 32

Wayne Wolfson is a completely self-taught artist. His main mediums are watercolor on paper & graphite. His works have been seen in shows & and private collections worldwide. Wayne cites music as his key influence. Regardless of subject matter, emotion is the most vital component for each piece. That the viewer walking away having felt something always being the ultimate goal. When painting people, he has a style which he refers to as narrative portraiture, which he explains as: “A non-programmatic piece where there is no concrete story occurring yet the viewer feels as if witnessing part of a story or a small, self contained one.” There is a preference for density in his compositions. Utilizing watercolors allows for this but with a delicacy too, which is inherent for the medium.

MUSIC

"Save You" is a mixture of electronic pop music with piano ballads. It's funky, fresh, and full of personal stories from my life. Half of the album is electronic and the other half has just me and the piano. MUSICIAN

PIERRE ANTHONY For singer/songwriter Pierre Anthony music was always a perfect escape. Growing in the rough Brightmoor area of Detroit, he was surrounded by violence and crime. Yet, he still managed to attend and graduated from Detroit School of the Arts where he was a standout vocalist. His talent even earned him a partial scholarship but, his dreams were deferred when he was convicted of a felony while trying to hustle for the rest of money he needed to attend school.

JAAMZIN CREATIVE | 38

Pierre Anthony served six long years in prison. It’s a common story, but that doesn’t make it any less sad. Prisons are full of young men whose socioeconomic status drove them to bad decisions. Yet, Pierre Anthony refused to accept that a return to prison would ever be his fate. “I’m labeled a black felon and that’s it,” he explains, “Companies don’t want to hire people like me. Thank God I’m able to make a living off my talent…because I’m never going back to the streets.” Instead, on his debut album, Pierre Anthony pours his heart, mind, and soul into his music.

JAZZ VOCALIST

FIONA ROSS Fiona Ross is a Jazz vocalist, pianist, composer and music producer based in London. Her new album, 'Black, White and a Little Bit of Grey', explores the story of a husband, a wife, and a mistress: a web of emotions, of desires, of regrets, of ecstasy. Situations are not always as clear-cut as they may appear as allegiances shift and betrayals become serpentine - not everything is black and white. Sometimes - when the victim becomes hazy, when pain and passion become intertwined — there’s ‘a Little Bit of Grey.

How do you nurture your street art creativity?

It is a long story, but I gradually found out that 4000 signatures are not enough to convince politicians that people have a voice and, I decided to bring my creative contribution to the collective

Generally speaking I nurture my creativity based

matter, and as I am evolving there is a growing importance for me to highlight social and environmental causes, minority challenges and to raise positive vibration in my work and around me. I am also inspired by childhood and cute things like love, tenderness, and basic emotions that makes any person happy and worth living this life with others. So all in all: beauty; challenges of the world; purity. Sometimes I get emotions from what I see and picture a complete work in my mind that resonates with me. This is how I select my potential works from all the sketches - I just focus on what really strikes me deep within as a vision. And then I try my best to express this vision with all media possible from visual arts like street art, graffiti, paste ups, stickers, videos and also writing about my arty experiences.

What's next? Are you working on new themes for your street art? My new theme revolves around the environment. I’m inspired by the community I live in in Brussels. I live in a green neighbourhood called Ixelles. A couple of months ago I saw some crochet art around the trees and wondered who did them and why. As I became more ensconced in the community, I came across a project for urban renewal where dozens of trees were to be cut in our community. I also discovered a group of activists fighting to keep them and create a place where people’s needs are taken into consideration when it comes to public welfare in the neighbourhood. I believe Karma speaks, so I will also be painting a mural in Cape Town (South Africa) in February at the IPAF festival. The theme is ‘We need nature, nature does not need us‘ and I am very excited and inspired about this project. January is an explosive month for me in terms of opportunities and I am still discussing projects which will happen this year. Sometimes I wish there was two of me so I can undertake everything that I’d like to. I will also be continuing with my project about gender and minorities acceptance to a broader extent – similar to what I did with my Ambigender Lovers campaign which spanned across three cities: London, Paris and Brussels.

Generally speaking, I feel a call to address important issues or new social trends connected with freedom of self-expression, feeling happy and treated with fairness, oppression or ignorance of minorities and outcasts in our society. I believe in democracy! I will be working on the UK Peace Helmet Project customising a war helmet for the charity. I will be working alongside talented international street artists on the project. In addition, I will also be exhibiting my work at the cultural Center Escale du Nord in Brussels in March this year. It is a collective show featuring with three female street artists: ´Le Street Art Au Feminin’. I will be producing a psychedelic installation piece in a room and paint a collaborative mural inspired by the iconic American Gothic painting which will have an Anthea Missy twist highlighting feminine powers.

Which are the top 3 most wanted walls that you would like to paint on? I crave experiences and painting on walls every day. Any wall makes me happy as every wall has a personality and its own identity - from its location to its constitution; the way it takes paint; the way it reacts to and reflects light and colour during the changing hours of the day. And more importantly, who are the people who seeing it? I like to think my art is somehow universally positive no matter where I paint on earth. I feel the reward of having brought something to them, a little bit of joy in this short life. I love walls that are located in exotic places like Asia, and also walls which take to the light well and are surrounded by trees or water. I also like new challenges associated with places I haven’t been before. All these things fascinate me. Places where I have not been yet :

I also want to broaden my story telling skills and I

What is something that you do differently? It is hard to say what makes me different, or what I do differently. I would say that what makes my work original is I am true to myself and authentic, and very often self-driven in most of my projects. I like what I do and I have a strong passion for selfexpression. My aim is to make art that resonates positively and makes people more human, awaken and connected together. I try not to take into account what people like or don’t like about my work. I simply rely on my gut and spontaneous visions and emotional impulses instead of following any statement or trends.

Do you only work on paintings? Do you use other media as well? Basically, I work in oil paints. And most often I prefer large and very large artwork formats.

Now I am striving to discover something new within the framework of one style, in order to develop it. And the best thing for this is the huge artwork of oil.

The nearest exhibition will be held in March in New

For example Art Basel. And if earlier I sent artwork

As a teacher of art, what do you think are the most important things to remember in the pursuit of great art? I have been teaching painting and drawing since 2005. And I have very different students. I believe that the most important thing is the disclosure of individuality. And in no way imitate the great artists! It's very important to be yourself! In my lessons, students apply different methods and styles of art. This is all in order to understand what exactly suits this person. We study both classical and modern art. We try all styles from realism and impressionism to modernism and pop art. And the methods are also very different: watercolor, pastel, acrylic, oil, pencil, charcoal, sepia, ink and much more. You can subscribe to art training with me on skype. And, of course, my work with oil, watercolor, and prints you can buy.

INTERVIEW

THE PATTERN TALES INTERVIEW WITH ITALIAN DESIGNER AND ART DIRECTOR CHIARA ALIOTTA Chiara Aliotta is an Italian designer and art director, co-founder of The Pattern Tales, a creative partnership dedicated to literature-inspired original digital print collections. Her husband, the artist Spiros Baras, and she are bibliophiles and they create limited-edition artworks to pay homage to the great writers and poets whose work has inspired them. We have conducted an interview with Chiara.

Please tell us more about your work on book illustrations? We have worked on several book illustrations before we decided to start our own project, The Pattern Tales. For example, among other works, a few years ago Spiros has illustrated the graphic novel Rainworms written by Samuele Livornese available on Amazon, and the fictional novel, La Virgola written by Laura De Luca and published by La Vita Felice. Illustrating books is a complex process for any artist because there are so many visual and information processing elements at play: reading a book may take us a few days, months or when it comes to big stories, even years! It is a long process of discovering: for some stories, we may need to travel to look for more inspiration. Sometimes we need to visit places described in the book itself to grab a detail that we will later use in our artwork.

As a designer, I prefer sketching a little bit on paper and then move to Illustrator to refine the details and create the motif. Spiros has a different artistic approach. He incorporates drawings and watercolours by scanning and layering them to create the final artwork on the computer. Both techniques are challenging when you aim to create an immersive experience close to the one offered by the book.

How did The Pattern Tales begin? We both love beautifully illustrated books and reading, and we wanted to create a deeper emotional connection and resonance between our artworks, the book characters and stories that live in our minds as readers. This unique relationship between reader and inner self-storyteller is what we wanted to keep alive, long after the book finds its place back on the shelf.
