new oyster 825 launched at Dusseldorf Boat Show

DEAR ISLANDER Dear Islander, Well, the new season feels like it’s getting moving again with a real sense of purpose in the air. The activity in the likes of STP is frenetic, with many major refits well under way. The boat show season remains in full swing too, with London having been and gone, and Dusseldorf about to open as I write this column. The visitor numbers at London were slightly disappointing at 88500, down from 94000 last year, but given that much of the UK was under flood water, especially the home counties and South West regions, the drop in attendance is hardly surprising. We have a report on the show later in this issue. The early reports from exhibitors were positive though, despite the lower attendance. The economic data recently released in the UK seemed to be borne out by people spending on new boats again. This month has seen the latest news come from The Super Yacht Cup team here in Palma announcing that the J Class are back in town for this year’s event, and are making the SYC their premier event for 2014. There are two special cups being awarded for the series, more detail can be found later in this issue. Plans for the Super Yacht Show and Palma Boat Show (April 30th – May 4th) are progressing , and we will bring you further details as and when they are available. It seems such a shame to me that the organisers of the Palma Boat Show are unable to get the information and plans out much earlier so that a concerted effort to attract more overseas visitors and exhibitors could be made, which I am certain would bear fruit. With the number of boats and infrastructure that we have here in Palma, together with the lovely spring sunshine which we normally have by early May, and the easy air access from virtually anywhere on the planet, this show should be one of the biggest and best worldwide. The Palma Boat Show doesn’t even feature on the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO) calendar, which , in my opinion is unforgivable. The Superyacht element of the show is certainly doing its bit, with the help of MYBA and BYBA, the main Yacht Brokers associations, and are promising to have around 65 Superyachts on show. If last year’s impressive array of Superyachts is anything to go by, this edition should be sensational. If only the rest of the organisation could show the same level of initiative, we could have a cracking show on our hands. Rant over! Simon & The Team The Islander Nautical Media S.L. CREW SHOW 2014 25TH APRIL 2014

Crew Show 2014 Mood Beach Club, Portals Friday 25th April looks set to be another great day in the “yachtie” calendar as the Palma crew show unfurls its flags once more. Hosted again by Dovaston crew, this year is a landmark year for both brands, CrewShow celebrating its fifth outing in Palma whilst Dovaston have clocked up an amazing 20 years as one of the leading crew agencies. The day will follow the same format as in previous years, a business to business lunch for exhibitors from 1-3 with the show opening for crew from 4 oclock. “The CrewShow is always an exciting event” said Phil Edwards CEO of the show’s host, Dovaston. “It gives a unique opportunity for our local businesses to showcase their products to crew alongside the better known names in the industry, and we are always keen to have new exhibitors to keep the show fresh and vibrant. Having said that the show is always a sell out so early reservations are important. Mood Beach Club is a great venue, large enough to accommodate 50 or so stands but small enough to maintain a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The show opens to visitors at four and carries on into the night with a definite party atmosphere. The club is happy to take reservations for dinner which provides an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to entertain clients for after the show.”

Anyone wanting information about exhibiting at the show is invited to get in touch by either contacting Phil himself via phil@crewshow.com or Vikki Mcleod event organiser at Mood on info@crewshow.com MLC Course Nautilus International and leading crew agents Dovaston crew will be hosting a two day MLC course before the Dovaston crew show in April . The dates for the course are 23rd and 24th April. The course tutors are ILO accredited representatives with experience in the yacht sector. The course objective is Implementation of MLC 2006 from the perspective of a non-certified ship and will include debate about deficiencies and issues post MLC go live. The course is free to Nautilus international members; Non-members can sign up to a years Nautilus subscription to receive all the benefits of membership and come for free. If you prefer not to join Nautilus International the costs are €310 for officers and €210 for crew (same price as years membership to Nautilus). This includes a copy of the MLC Handbook and refreshments for the two days. Phil Edwards CEO of Dovaston Crew said “just like the crew show held on the 25th April we expect this to be a sell-out. Space is limited so book your place as soon as possible”. An agenda is available from the Dovaston team. For more information contact: info@dovaston.com or telephone 971 677 375.

NEW OYSTER 825 phreys, and detailed styling and engineering developed by the Oyster Design Team, the new 25 metre Oyster 825 is already turning heads. Three sold off plan before hull ‘one’ even hit the water and her optional super-shallow-draft, all-external swing keel is adding to appeal.

Sleek and splendidly luxurious, she happens also to have been the largest sailing yacht at the show. With her clean and easily driven hull lines drawn by Rob Hum-

Significantly with Oyster’s new twin-rudder configuration bringing max beam further aft and also lower in the hull, the new Oyster 825’s internal volume is an astonishing 15 per cent up on her predecessor, the highly successful Oyster 82 of which 17 were built. With every jot of space above and below cabin sole minutely 3D modelled for optimal integration of ship’s systems, stowage and accommodation comforts, machinery noise is minimised but service access maximised, and all while achieving an unusually spacious primary arrangement of three private suites aft and, forward of the central elevated saloon, a clear separation of space for

up to four professional crew to run the yacht discretely with minimal interruption to guests while still providing a ‘six-star’ service. Easily capable of 250 miles per day, the Oyster 825 is a powerful, optionally carbon rigged yacht, yet one easily shorthanded with the aid of joystick and hydraulic sail controls. Her spacious, ergonomically planned cockpit comfortably and safely separates guests from sail handling, and the wide areas of bulwark edged flush teak-laid deck fore and aft serve sunbathing and entertainment well. Decks are long, broad and unobstructed and Oyster’s fabulous trademark pushpit seats are just perfect also for watching this splendid yacht perform or just to enjoy the fun of others as they splash and play around the expansive boarding platform that folds out of the stern.

MARINE HYDRAULIC SOLUTIONS LAUNCHES IN PALMA main workshop is conveniently located within the STP shipyard in Palma de Mallorca; a superlative location for clients based in the central hub of the Mediterranean superyacht industry. Steve Branagh and Peer Jorgensen launch the new company with an impressive number of organisations operating as partners and service providers, as Steve states: Peer Jorgensen (+34) 971 224 978 info@marinehydraulic solutions.com Marine Hydraulic Solutions (MHS) has been formed to meet the increasing demand for a high quality, specialist marine hydraulic service. Recognising the need for a specialist hydraulic service and maintenance operation to complement their existing rigging business, Steve Branagh,

Steve Branagh owner of globally recognised mast and rigging firm RSB Rigging Solutions, and Peer Jorgensen (RSB General Manager) opened the doors of MHS in January. MHS has recruited a highly qualified team with the technical knowledge and experience to deliver top quality services for all superyacht related hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The

“Following conversations with captains, riggers and mast manufacturing companies, we realised the demand for a specialized entity for marine hydraulics. Due to our long standing reputation and marine industry experience, we will work closely with existing partners and providers such as Navtec, Castrol, Shell, Enerpac and Harken, ensuring we are able to solve service and warranty issues quickly, and cost effectively”

As hydraulics are a critical aspect to the running of a superyacht, MHS can offer clients a thorough system analysis and efficiency study to ensure vital equipment such as pipe-work, power packs and valves are working effectively. Steve Branagh enthuses: “I am overwhelmed with the initial responses from Captains and other specialist companies we work alongside, and are very excited with plans for the future for this new company.” MHS provides a complete hydraulic and pneumatic service from routine servicing of hydraulic systems, testing, analysis, parts sourcing and replacement to system design, modification and installation.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE communications, successfully demonstrated bi-directional high-speed Internet connectivity with a Ka broadband satellite.

Roger Horner - E3 Systems (+34) 971 404 208 info@e3s.com www.e3s.com The old year has closed, and the new one has started at full speed with some exciting developments and launches in new technology. On 8th December, we saw the successful launch of the first Inmarsat-5 F1 satellite for the new Global Xpress VSAT service, paving the way for the GX service trials to start in March, with a possible regional launch after that in the Med and Indian Ocean. Then, in mid-December, Kymeta hit another milestone after successfully testing full transmit and receive over satellite using their radical flat panel satellite antenna. In early January, we have recorded some impressive bandwidth performance tests using 4G LTE in Palma and on the mainland. Finally, over early January, we have had the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas where we saw the launch of curved TV screens and where BYOD is being replaced by WYOD! If you have no idea what I’m talking about, then please read on… Where to start? Let’s start close to home. Performance test results on the new 4G LTE services We have been testing the performance of the new 4G LTE on our

Vodafone network in Palma and Barcelona over the last few weeks, and have achieved some pretty mind blowing results. In the port in Palma we

achieved the following results in mid-January. This is showing a 41.54Mbps download speed on an iPhone 5! Note the upload speed is pretty impressive as well. In Barcelona airport, where there is a higher load, we achieved 25Mbps, which is still pretty amazing. We then conducted tests using different 4G LTE routers, as would be installed on a yacht rather than an iPhone, at 3pm in the afternoon and achieved results ranging from 19.75Mbps to 31.56Mbps when compared to 33.36Mbps on an iPhone5 at the same time. However, please be aware that the 4G LTE network is not fully loaded yet, so these figures may not be maintained once this happens. It seems a pretty obvious option doesn’t it? Our tip is to upgrade to 4G LTE now to take advantage of the performance and to supplement the bandwidth on your VSAT with 4G LTE when in range with a super-fast and cheap add on. A 20Mbps dedicated VSAT service currently ranges from $125,000 upwards per month!! The only hitch is that you will need new hardware. Making sure you choose the right equipment is not an elementary exercise. We know, as we have spent months researching the frequencies and band that 4G LTE works on in different parts of the world and now have defined the best solutions for different parts of the world, even down to the antenna and cable. Inmarsat-5 F1 Global Xpress (GX) satellite launch Inmarsat successfully launched the first satellite in what will be their new global VSAT data

The initial tests included simple bi-directional Internet connectivity and video streaming, and then they launched a bi-directional Skype video call from a laptop at the demonstration site to Kymeta’s corporate headquarters in Redmond, Washington, USA. All tests were successful. Check out www.kymetacorp. com/kiosk for more detail. network Global Xpress (GX) for its mobile customers and more specifically maritime clients on 8th December 2013. This first GX satellite will provide VSAT service across the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean and link up to the other satellites once launched, providing a true global VSAT service. The next phase is to commence testing at the start of February. We will be conducting trials with yachts starting in the second quarter of 2014. If you are interested in joining this test programme, please contact Tony Holland tony@e3s.com. Kymeta reach major milestone in flat panel satellite antenna development On 10th December, Kymeta Corporation, our colleagues who are developing the innovative metamaterials based flat-panel antenna for satellite

The Mother of all Gadgets Shows in Las Vegas I have yet to attend the CES (the Consumer Electronics Show), the world-famous technology and electronics trade show held in Las Vegas. It’s been around for nearly 50 years, and these days you can follow it remotely, almost by the minute, if you feel the need to. The Show covers everything, but the common theme is that every device needs to be connected, and needs access to a data connection. There were Smart Diet Scales that connect to an App on your smartphone telling you what food you can and can’t eat, the Koliber connected toothbrush that connects to an App to provide tooth brushing instructions, and even an App that rings your phone when your doorbell at home is rung, so that you can see and talk to the person at

your door from anywhere in the world. If you have seen any reports on the CES such as the BBC Click coverage, you will have seen that new TVs hit most of the headlines, and the biggest headline feature in this sector was “curved” TV. Why? Very few of us have curved walls to mount a curved TV on, so I decided to investigate further. Both Samsung and LG announced 105in (267cm) sized 4K Ultra HD screens in the extra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio and they also showed their prototypes, which allow viewers to adjust the curve on their OLED (organic lightemitting diode) flexible screens by using the remote control! Evidently the reason behind this new feature is so that the viewer can adjust the displays to be more curved and thus create a visual wrap around sensation for playing video games, then flatten the screen in order to watch sport or other content with others. Sounds interesting. Tarsier launched special glasses called Move-Eye, which monitor the viewer’s hand movements, allowing them to switch channels using gesture controls. This brings me neatly to the move we are all going to make in the near future from BYOD to WYOD. BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device, and WYOD is, of course, Wear Your Own Device. Following on from my recent column on wearable technology being the future “must have”, CES was awash with WYOD.

Google Glass was present, but take up on will happen when they announce a more reasonable price. There were many other smaller companies launching similar products. GlassUp showed off a pair of glasses which superimpose smartphone alerts, directions and other app information over the user’s right eye. Much of the other wearable tech focused on fitness. There was Instabeat, a waterproof heads-up monitor that attaches to swimming goggles to show the wearer’s heart rate. Veristride promoted a shoe insole sensor that provides feedback about the owner’s movements and Singapore’s Smartmissimo showed the world’s first wearable “smart electrical muscle stimulator” for athletes. WYOD is sure to have an impact on the data demands on yachts, as guests will arrive not only with their smartphones, tablets and laptops but also with all sorts of wearable devices attached to their bodies! So be aware, be very aware, and be prepared as there will be more demands on your precious on-board data connections however there is a solution! More about this next month.

REGATTA NEWS The Super Yacht Cup 2014 This year’s Super yacht Cup will be held June 18th – 21st in the bay of Palma, once again under the race management of RCNP, arguably the best race management team in World Yachting. The feedback from many participants after the 2013 event was that they had never experienced such quality course setting and race management at any previous regatta. High praise indeed from some of the world’s top professional yachtsmen! There are already 17 confirmed registrations, which is a very early and positive response.

These entries are listed on www.thesuperyachtcup.com. The Islander will be featuring a full “Runners and Riders” preview in the June issue of the magazine containing all the vital statistics and photographs of each boat plus a run down on the crews. REGATTA NEWS

The Super Yacht Cup 2014 Two special Cups for J Class This year’s Super Yacht Cup in Palma has been nominated by the J Class as their premier event of the season. To mark this event, there will be two very special and historical Cups presented to the winners, making it a very special occasion.

Galway To Bid For Third Volvo Ocean Race Visit In 2020

The “Corinthian Kings Cup” made by R & W Sorley of Glasgow in 1914 is a silver cup first presented by King George V to the Royal Clyde Yacht Club. This will be given to to the leading J Class for all four days racing with an amateur owner driver. The “Kings Hundred Guinea Cup” made by Carington & Co of London in 1927 is made of silver gilt and was presented by King George VI for the Royal Yacht Squadron regatta in 1937. This will be presented to the first placed J Class on handicap on Wednesday 18th June.

Among the future plans for Galway as part of the masterplan for the city’s port submitted last week is the intention to bring back the Volvo Ocean Race for the third time, as the Irish Independent reports. Galway harbour master Capt Brian Sheridan says 2020 would be the earliest that Galway could bid for a stopover place

in the event that it previously hosted in 2009 and 2012, the latter reportedly generating some €60 million for the local economy and attracting a global audience of over 1 billion. What’s more, Galway Harbour Company chief Eamon Bradshaw has intimated that the idea of integrating the harbour with the city, which lies at the heart of the masterplan, only took off with the first visit of the round-the-world yacht race to the City of the Tribes.

The photos show Jim Clark, the owner of Hanuman winning the Kings Hundred Guinea Cup at St Barths in 2013, and the owner of Velsheda winning the trophy in 2012 at Cowes. We look forward to seeing these wonderful yachts doing battle again in June out in the Bay of Palma.

REGATTA NEWS in a way that Andrew inspired and helped so many people in his life. It’s a real honour to be involved with the foundation and help inspire a younger generation.’ Beijing 2008 bronze medallist windsurfer Bryony Shaw said: ‘Andrew had the ability to inspire you like no one else and always had time to give advice in his own unique way. We were paired as buddies for London 2012 so we had each other’s back and he was always a good listener. Ben Ainslie pictured with from the left …Stevie Morrison, Bryony Shaw and Paul Goodison First Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation Ambassadors Named Three Olympians will be inspiring the next generation and visiting schools, keeping Bart’s spirit alive. Olympians Paul Goodison, Stevie Morrison and Bryony Shaw have been named as the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation’s first official Ambassadors. The trio competed alongside Andrew, who was nicknamed ‘Bart’, as members of Team GB at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Ambassadors were announced by Sir Ben Ainslie at the London Boat Show at ExCeL, on the charity’s stand. The trio will be supporting

the work of the foundation by inspiring the next generation. One of the activities they will be involved with is visiting schools to encourage children to realize what opportunities there are in sport and what benefits there are of getting involved in sporting activities. The foundation will be announcing other ambassadors and details of its plans over the coming months. Beijing 2008 gold medallist Laser sailor Paul Goodison said: ‘I’m delighted to be involved in keeping Andrew’s spirit alive, he was not just a best friend but the guy I always reached out to for help and advice. He always had the answers and made everything so obvious that it seemed stupid to have even questioned it. ‘I am looking forward to help support and guide young sailors

‘I’m delighted to be an ambassador towards his legacy and keep his spirit alive.’ Stevie Morrison, Olympian and 49er World Champion said: ‘Over the course of my 49er Olympic campaigns Bart was always the go-to guy whenever you needed some advice and input into any aspects of your sailing. ‘A pat on the back before a big day of racing would fire you up and send you off ready for battle. I hope by being involved with the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, I can just in a small way make kids new to the sport be as excited by what it has to offer, as Bart would always do for the Olympic team.’ Bart’s Bash The charity is gearing up to hold Bart’s Bash on 21 September 2014, a Guinness World Record attempt to create the largest dinghy and yacht racing event ever. The event aims to inspire sailors of all generations to take part.

About The Charity The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation is a national charity that encourages young people to get into sailing and watersports. Andrew Simpson, gold and silver Olympic medallist and America’s Cup professional, tragically lost his life in a training accident in May 2013.

Inspiring the next generation was something Andrew was extremely passionate about and so to honour his life and legacy Sir Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy and Andrew’s wife Leah founded the charity in his name. The First Ambassadors Bryony Shaw, aged 30, is a two-time Olympian and was the first British woman to win an Olympic windsurfing medal when she won an emotional bronze at Beijing 2008. Sailing in the RS:X class, Shaw also has World and European Championship medals to her name, and was the British Sailing Team and British Olympic Association’s athlete of the year for sailing in 2013. She is campaigning to represent Great Britain at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Stevie Morrison, aged 35, is a World and European Champion in the Olympic 49er class, and represented Great Britain at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games with long-term crew Ben Rhodes. Morrison’s thirst for Olympic glory continues, and with Rhodes now having retired from Olympic campaigning, Morrison recently teamed up with Chris Grube in a bid for British Sailing Team skiff gold in Rio 2016. Paul Goodison, aged 36, has represented Great Britain in the Laser class at the past three Olympic Games, winning gold in 2008 after narrowly missing out on the podium in Athens 2004 where he finished fourth. Injury put paid to the Yorkshireman’s hopes of defending his title at his home Games in 2012, and since then Goodison has been taking a sabbatical from the Laser to race in big boat campaigns including Melges 20 and 32s, RC44s and TP52s. In 2014 he will race as part of Sir Ben Ainslie’s J.P.Morgan BAR team in the Extreme Sailing Series.

REGATTA NEWS

Trofeo SAR Pincesa Sofia, Mapfre Each year, Palma plays host to one of the most prestigious Olympic Class dinghy events in the world, which seas around 1000 sailors descend on the area for top class racing. Many teams are already here in the Bay of Palma training for this event and the 2014 Olympic Classes circuit. Ferran Muniesa, CEO Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Mapfre “This year we take a step forward to offer live information on racing” The Notice of Race of the ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca – 45 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía Mapfre, the Olympic regatta held in Mallorca in April, is published. The online entry system is now open. Ferran Muniesa, the event CEO, checks all the steps made in the countdown to one of the major regular sports events held in Spain. The Organizing Committee is already working hard to deliver an excellent edition to be held from 29th March to 5 April in the venues of Club Nàutic S’Arenal and Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa. An edition with new services for the almost 1,000 sailors from over the world here in Mallorca for this amazing event, which forms a part of the Sailing World Cup. What are your expectations for this edition? As far as entries are concerned, we expect to welcome a very competitive fleet in Mallorca. Last year, being a Post-Olympic year we had an incredible number of entries and a high

quality fleet. We could say that after the post-Olympic rest, this is the first season towards Río 2016, so we expect to see all the teams starting their Olympic campaign in Mallorca. The entries received for the Arenal Training Camps confirm it is going to be a high level regatta this year.

British America’s Cup team have a “strong” chance of success says Ben Ainslie Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie believes that a British America’s Cup team have a good chance of winning – providing he can get the right people on board. America’s Cup winner Ben Ainslie is confident that a British team could win the next America’s Cup with the right people involved. Ainslie, who is currently putting a British team together for the next event, likely to be held in 2017, has already secured some of the $100m funding needed from both private and commercial investors. Talking at the London Boat Show on Wednesday, he said: “I think we’ve got the right people involved, we’ve got a lot of backing in the last three or four months and if we can pull those key people together, I think we have a strong, realistic chance of being successful.” Having launched his own team, J.P. Morgan BAR in 2012, Ainslie

has said he will only commit to the event when the rules and regulations are announced in the next few months. Following his success in September with team USA, Ainslie has been working hard to achieve his goal of bringing the America’s Cup back to the UK. He has already teamed up with former laser Olympic Gold Medallist, Paul Goodison, and renowned bowman Matt Cornwall for his Extreme 40 campaign this year, with a view to them becoming a part of his future America’s Cup squad. Ben commented, “It’s a very complex task because you’ve got to raise a significant amount of money first and be able to hire the right people in terms of managers, designers and sailors. “It started in British waters in 1851 so I think it’s about time we put that straight and hopefully bring the America’s Cup back.” Let’s hope he is as successful in raising the necessary funds as he is on the race track!

Extreme Sailing Series 2014 Extreme Sailing Series organisers OC Sport, alongside Land Rover, one of two Series Main Partners, have today confirmed details of their most ambitious Series to date at the London Boat Show. The awardwinning and ‘ISAF Special Event’ world tour will celebrate its eighth year on the international sailing calendar with eight Host Venues spanning three continents, over eleven months and nine elite level teams representing seven nations, who will compete to win the Extreme Sailing Series trophy. Singapore will host the curtain raiser to the 2014 Series, with the first starting gun on 20th February. In Singapore the fleet will race within the confines of the ultimate city-centre stadium on the world-famous Marina Bay. From Asia, to the Middle East and the capital of the Sultanate of Oman for Act 2 19-22 March, before the fleet return to China’s ‘Olympic Sailing City’ Qingdao, China’s premier racing destination in May. A brand new venue for 2014 is

Saint Petersburg, Russia, 26-29 June. The annual UK leg will take the fleet of high-performance catamarans to the heart of the Welsh capital in Cardiff, 22-25 August. From 11 September, the waters separating Asia and Europe will host Act 6 as the fleet return to Istanbul, Turkey before the penultimate Act of the year at a Host Venue to be confirmed in the Mediterranean in early October. The final Act of 2014 will be held in one of the most iconic cities in the world as the fleet head to the Southern Hemisphere for the first time, the Harbour City in Sydney Australia in December. Notably absent for 2014 and not in the Extreme Sailing Series calendar is Brazil, but the tour will return in 2015, following on from the successful final 2013 Act in Florianopolis. extremesailingseries.com

MARINE INDUSTRY NEWS racing. The wing sail was introduced into the yacht design parameters for the now infamous ‘deed of gift’ face off, between Larry Ellison’s USA BMW Oracle team and the Swiss Alinghi defenders back in 2011. The two teams duelled it out in the waters off Valencia, with the Americans winning by a very comfortable margin after many false starts due to extremely variable wind conditions. Extreme 40…Ben Ainslie’s steed for the 2014 series London Boat Show 2014 One of the highlights of this year’s London Boat Show, which ran from 4th to 12th January, was the strong showing by Sir Ben Ainslie and two of the high performance catamarans that he has been sailing. In the entrance foyer was the Extreme 40 which he intends to race competitively in an exciting world series this year, with sponsorship by JP Morgan in a deal that was formally announced at the show. And on their joint stand in the main hall was the AC45 flying machine which was the ‘one design’ catamaran raced in the Americas Cup World series, the precursor to the AC34 finals in San Francisco. Anyone who has seen the Extreme 40’s in action will vouch for the pure adrenalin rush that they create for their crews, and for the exciting viewing for spectators when they are raced close enough to the shore. The series kicks off in Singapore... and why not? The Lion City has already made its name for hosting a fantastic Formula 1 motor

racing Grand Prix every year, so where better to get the public interested in the Extreme 40 World Series! In addition to this, J.P. Morgan also announced at LBS that their title sponsorship of the iconic Round-the-Island Race will continue to reside with J.P. Morgan Asset Management for a further two-year period up to and including 2016. The same boat design skippered by Ainslie and raced off the Isle of Wight in June last year, as the JP Morgan BAR AC45, smashed the Round-the-Island Race multihull record, which had stood for 12 years. The Ben Ainslie Racing crew crossed the line in a final time of 2 hours 52 minutes 15 seconds, wiping 16 minutes and 8 seconds off the previous best time! On the JP Morgan BAR stand, suspended above the twin hulls of the AC45 like a looming black cloud was the massive wing sail, the use of which has undoubtedly changed the whole perspective of America’s Cup

The Hardy 40DS

So much for the history, which is also now peppered with the publicly familiar ‘8-1 down’ come back by the Americans in San Francisco, thanks to the intervention by Sir Ben himself, when he convincingly provided them with that desperately needed extra inspirational knot or two! So, the Q&A session on the stand with Sir Ben that was announced for 11.30 on the Wednesday of LBS, was eagerly attended by quite a large crowd of public and press who were busy jostling for best positions when the great man emerged into a strobelike barrage of camera flashes. No doubt the appearance of HRH PrIncess Ann at the show, scheduled for later in the day and booked to visit the Ainslie camp amongst a few others, also boosted the attendance figures for Wednesday. But having said that, most stands seemed fairly quiet to me during most of the day, particularly when compared with METS in Amsterdam which was absolutely buzzing just a few weeks ago! It could be said that the heading of ‘Q&A’ was a bit of a misnomer for the session with Ben, it was more like a well oiled publicity event, with a few questions afterwards on a fairly limited and stage managed basis. But hey, such is the culture of celebrity that has evolved in today’s media focused, instant gratification world, and nobody was complaining as Ben introduced to the crowd two of his trusty crew; bowman Matt ‘Cat Flap’ Cornwell and Paul Goodman who introduced himself as; “Mainsheet and tactics man”, and then stressed that he was,

“definitely onboard to learn from Ben!” The Q&A was gently teased into being by the presenter who started by asking Ben; “What was going on in the team room in San Francisco, when Team USA were 8-1 down? His overall comment on the next Americas Cup was to say that he was working hard on getting a team for the next event. But that right now Hamilton Island (Australia) are the challengers, so they and Oracle will make the rules. Until that happens and its known when, where, and what type of boat will be raced, its difficult to even talk about the possible costs let alone discuss raising the money for it. He said he very much wants a UK team to be in, and that it’s a big missing part of Britain’s sailing history since 1851, and his hopes were that the costs would be lower for everyone for the next series! So, what else was interesting at this year’s LBS? Well that is very subjective of course, but I tend to wander and let things grab me rather than sit down with the show catalogue and plan what to go and see. Although it has to be said, that its far easier to do this at the London Boat Show than it is at say Boot Dusseldorf, as the entire affair at the Excel Centre could probably fit into a couple of the massive 17 halls at the Word Trade Centre in Germany. So in brief, here are my picks of the show, in no particular order, and with the caveat that they are personal, and maybe not everyone would agree with me! For a motor yacht, that you’ll actually look forward to leaving the marina in, and finding a bit of rough weather! The Hardy 40 DS. Sunseeker 40 metre Yacht took over Hardy Marine, and is said to represent the thinking of the new owners, who see the market opening up for more bespoke vessels in future. She’s from the boards of established Hardy designer Andrew Wolstenholme, whose brief was to design a yacht capable of comfortable cruising at 10 to 12 knots, but can get you home at 18 knots if needed, without sacrificing any of the Hardy’s legendary sea keeping abilities. Her generous 4.3 metre beam allows a very spacious and open aspect saloon, with lots of light pouring in, and a clean no nonsense layout which entices you in from the aft deck through the sliding glass doors. Engine specs, interiors and styling can all be modified to suit an owners choice. www.hardymarine.co.uk For the largest yacht in the show. I have to choose this, it’s an indisputable fact, so nobody can disagree with me! The Sunseeker 40 Metre Yacht.

Parked outside in the chilly grey waters of the River Thames, there was not much sun around to seek! The usual Sunseeker disregard for the press, or indeed anyone not in the Forbes Rich List was evident, with a ‘repel all boarders’ security policy designed to keep any poorly heeled feet off her precious decks! As would be expected, this one ticks all the ‘wow factor’ boxes, measuring 40.05 metres (131’ 5”) overall, and with a beam of 8.09 metres (26’ 7”) she is truly a Superyacht in every respect, and built to RINA Commercial, MCA, LY3 classifications. And with several layout options for maindeck, skydeck, saloon and cabins, she is also relatively customisable for the owner who wants to put his own style and stamp on his multi million dollar purchase. If he has the $23 million dollars (or 14 million quid) to spare, he can take up to 12 guests, in suitably pampered luxury with 7 crew onboard, at speeds up to 26 knots, for as far as 1500 miles on a tankful of

The radio also provides 25W Two-Way Hailer capability. When connected to an external hailer horn, you can talk to people on the deck or shore from the radio’s microphone and can hear people’s reply via the hailer speaker. Horn and RX hailer functions are also available. Marina Estrella Sold French investment fund Hoche Partners and new Spanish shareholders have taken a majority stake in the Spanish firm. French investment fund Hoche Partners and a group of Spanish investors have taken a majority stake in Marina Estrella, one of Spain’s largest boat distributors and brokers. The company was previously in the hands of the founding Estrella family. The entry of new Spanish investors and Hoche Partners as shareholders endorses the strategy of Marina Estrella, which, over the past two years, has conducted a major restructuring and reorganisation led by CEO Francisco Rivas. Rivas – former Rodman CEO, president and founder of Spanish marine industry association ANEN, and strategy consultant and manager of major companies from different

sectors in Spain – will continue in his role as Marina Estrella’s CEO. “The confidence in the project by the new shareholders will drive the challenges we will face in the new era that now opens for Marina Estrella,” says Rivas. “These challenges will consist mainly to consolidate our leading position in the import and distribution of our nine premium yacht brands; Azimut Yachts, Atlantis, Magellano, Benetti, Cobalt, Hanse, Moody, Sacs and Minorchino, in Spain and Portugal, and our brokerage, charter and services divisions, to which we are adding a strong commitment to our international development and the entry into the field of marinas management, with several projects already under evaluation. “We are very pleased with the incorporation of the new shareholders and what it means in reinforcing the capital structure of the company to support our strategic business plan,” he adds. Marina Estrella is an exclusive distributor of Azimut Yachts, Atlantis, Magellano, Benetti, Cobalt, Hanse, Moody, Sacs and Minorchino in Spain and Portugal. The company is also a leading yacht broker in the Iberian market, with one of the largest portfolios of yachts and the highest deal volume. Charter and maintenance services are also provided.

Supply & Fitting Service Battery Testing & Maintenance UK Marine Leisure Market on the Up! The UK leisure marine sector is in bullish mood for the next 12 months onthe back of a thriving export market in 2013 and a resurgent domestic industry According to research released by the British Marine Federation to coincide with the London Boat Show (4-12 January), overseas trade increased 7.7% in revenue for 2012/13, helping drive up revenue for the whole industry by 1.7% to £2.905 billion. Meanwhile the domestic market is set to build on this momentum in 2014, with current performance indicators recording levels not seen since before the recession. Europe and North America were the most common destinations for UK goods and services from the sector, with trade to both regions growing by almost 10% (9.6% and 9.9% respectively). In particular, strong demand for boats manufactured in the UK led the export recovery, with sales to overseas clients growing 7.9% compared to a fall of 8.3% in the previous year. International business is forecast to continue growing through 2014. More than four in ten (42%) in the sector are already reporting a higher workload for exports, whilst almost as many (38%) are sitting on healthier order books for overseas clients compared to a year ago. Domestic business has also started to surge in the last six months, compared to the previous year. Although slower to pick up from the recession

than the international market, trends for the ‘home workload’ and ‘home order value’ are now the most positive since 2007. 43% of businesses report a higher workload for UK clients over the last six months than one year ago (up from 32% in November 2012) while 38% have a higher value of the domestic order book (up from 31% last year). The more buoyant international and domestic markets have meant that almost half of leisure marine businesses (48%) increased turnover in MayNovember from last year, and expectations are even stronger for 2014. Nine in ten (88%) predict more positive growth for the next six months and over a third (34%) have increased investment from last year.

Howard Pridding, Chief Executive of the BMF, commented: “The leisure marine industry is in good shape going into 2014. Having exported its way back to growth and increased the delivery of goods and services to international markets to over £1 billion last year, the sector is now poised to capitalise on the improving domestic economy. “Some of the latest performance indicators have exceeded all our expectations and we are confident that 2014 will welcome a new period of sustained growth for the sector. UK boatbuilding is a manufacturing success story with a worldwide reputation, and the London Boat Show this week is a great way to showcase this expertise whilst also marking the start of a new chapter for the industry.”

MARINE INDUSTRY NEWS Musto partners with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Sailing clothing brand to support UAE team led by British skipper Ian Walker. Musto has announced its partnership with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing for the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race. Nigel Musto commented: “The United Arab Emirates is key to our international expansion throughout the Middle East the partnership with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing is intended to raise the brand profile across the region and aid in our search for distribution partners to represent Musto locally.” Musto’s association with the race dates back to 1981/82 when the brand teamed up with winning boat Flyer II, and has continued to be involved as a supplier in all subsequent editions. In June 2013, Musto announced its position as official supplier of sailing apparel and footwear for the next two editions of the Volvo Ocean Race. Commenting on the partnership, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing skipper Ian Walker, says: “The team is thrilled to have the support of Musto as we embark on our second Volvo Ocean Race. We can be confident we are in safe hands with Musto.”

Azimut Yachts at Motor Boat Awards 2014: double triumph of Azimut 80 and Azimut Atlantis 34 Azimut Yachts has a special reason to toast the New Year. The company based in Avigliana, Italy opens the year 2014 with two prizes at the 2014 Motor Boat Awards, a contest organised by authoritative British magazines Motor Boat & Yachting and Motor Boats Monthly. Azimut 80 won the award in the ‘Flybridge over 55 feet’ category, while Azimut Atlantis 34 won in the ‘Sportcruiser up to 45 feet’ category. The prestigious awards were officially presented on the occasion of the London Boat Show on January 6 by a panel of judges including the magazines’ editors and experienced boat testers on the basis of the results of tests conducted at sea with the vessels over the past twelve months and published in the magazines. The finalists in each of the nine categories were required to undergo rigorous, thorough testing procedures before the judges made their final decisions. “These awards boost the importance of these two yachts, already recognised unique in their category in the previous months” underlines Francesco Ansalone, Marketing Director of Azimut|Benetti Group. “Azimut fans have already demonstrated their appreciation for both vessels, each of which presents

decidedly innovative content and sophisticated solutions adopted to respond to the tastes and demands of an increasingly well-informed, evolving clientele. Receiving further confirmation of the success of these decisions from top experts in the field brings us all great satisfaction and encouragement to continue producing vessels which are the product of Italian creativity and skill but also, and above all, of on-going research and application of the best technologies.” Latest Spanish boat registration numbers Figures from September to December show that boat registration increased by 2.7 per cent compared to same period the previous year. ANEN, the Spanish marine trade association, has released its annual boat market report for 2013. Figures show that annual boat registration totalled 3,902 — a drop of 19.5 per cent compared to 2012. However, the analysis showed an upswing in the market with figures from September to December up by 2.7 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. RIBs, it appears, have been the most resilient boat sector registering a drop of just 3.3 per cent in registration numbers compared to the annual data for 2012. Motorboat registrations were down 16.7 per cent, PWCs (-22.5 per cent), semi rigid inflatable crafts (-30.6

per cent), with sailboats seeing the biggest decline (-34.3 per cent). The Spanish boat park is predominantly made up of motorboats (47.2 per cent), with inflatables second with a market share of 17.9 per cent, a three point increase on 2012. RIBs made up 17.4 per cent of the market. Sailboats account for 5.8 per cent of the boating sector, a 1.3 per cent point drop on 2012. Boats below 8m (26.2ft) dominate the market (90.5 per cent). The charter market has followed the upward trend in boat registration in Q3 2013 with 29 units compared with 18 boats registered in the same three months the previous year. The annual ANEN report is based on boat registration figures released by the Spanish Marine Authority

AENIB UPDATE

President of AENIB Marga Dahlberg Letter from the President January 2014 The year 2013 that we leave behind was “big” in many ways. Twelve months of intense work that has resulted in triumphs but also made us taste the bitter chalk of disappointment. All in all, by December we have assisted in 137 events, including meetings with politicians, working groups, boat shows… Countless hours invested in one sole objective: your wellbeing as an entrepreneur in the nautical industry. By joining our forces we have been able to break historic barriers that prevented us from prospering and making changes that would allow us to grow. We made progress, thanks to your support and our membership in ANEN, whose persistence and good work has been one of our biggest assets. What made the biggest waves was the exemption of the matriculation tax on charter boats. It used to be an insurmountable obstacle for a lot of people who wanted to come to our islands to sail and to enjoy the unrivalled environment, one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. We can still hear the echo of Rosa Estarás

asking the European Commission to pronounce against this tax in Spain (which it ended up doing). However, our battle is not finished until the tax is withdrawn from all recreational vessels. Until then we´ll be at a disadvantage compared to our competitors. In any case, we are sure that starting from next season we´ll see the Balearic Islands climb on the ranking of the best nautical tourism destinations to a position that actually corresponds to us. Another wall that came tumbling down was the old Law of Maritime Navigation. A more than 100 year old lump of a law that didn´t distinguish a merchant ship from a yacht. For the first time ever the recreational yachting will be recognized as a separate entity in a legal aspect. To achieve this, a great amount of both human and economic resources were necessary, in elaborating extensive reports that would accurately reflect our reality in order to make the Administration aware of the need of a change in our sector. The new Draft of Law promises to be the tool to simplify our daily business activities and to finally put us in sync with the international legal framework.

This was also the year of the Palma Boat Show. Despite the crisis, the project drawn up by the entrepreneurial sector and with the participation of the Public Administrations proved to be on the right track. It was an event able to excite and attract the attention of a lot of people. A project developed to a great deal by our association based on your input and ideas. In the coming year we will continue to work in our important role in the Organizing Committee to increase the revs even further and to make Palma an international reference on the boat show calendar. For this purpose, please let us know any suggestions you may have regarding the show. The year 2013 is almost behind and indeed leaves the bar very high. But there is still a lot to do, so many obstacles to get rid of. One of the issues that AENIB will put some effort in is the battle against the illegal street vending in the ports and marinas, a problem that in one way another affects all of us. It wouldn´t be right to talk about all these changes without acknowledging the favorable stand the government of

President Bauzá has taken towards the recreational yachting. He understands, because we have shown him, how beneficial our activity can be for the whole community. For this reason he has chosen capable persons with a vast knowledge of the sector to be in charge of the Port Authority and the Ports IB. We hope that Alberto Pons in charge of APB and David Gómez as the director of Ports IB will be instrumental in bringing order in the mess that their predecessors managed to cause. The key for our achievements has been all of your support. The strength you give us has placed us in key positions from where to battle for the improvement of our sector. Within short the elections will take place at the CAEB, the biggest employer´s union in the Balearics. It is a platform that has proven to be very useful for the nautical sector, but which we could use even more to get our message across to the politicians, therefore we are aiming to position ourselves even better within the union. Another field we are determined to conquer, together with ANEN, is the complete fiscal and legal harmonization of the sector at the European and international level. Despite the achievements of the past year, we are still miles away from having a rational and modern administrative framework adapted to our daily necessities. We will put our efforts in this, so we will have nothing to envy our competitors.

DOCTOR AT SEA

Dr. Ken Prudhoe Club de Mar Medical Centre (+34) 639 949 125 drken@clubdemarmedical.com Obesity is a big problem I am writing this in early January and the mid-winter holiday season is still on the go in Spain with Tres Reyes/Three Kings just around the corner. Many of us are already counting the cost of the last couple of weeks and may have made earnest resolutions to cut back in January and lose the extra pounds which add on so easily and subtract with frustrating difficulty. By the time you read this you may have regained your previous weight or even started a new eating lifestyle which sees you down to a youthful silhouette by the summer - or possibly not! The MCA is homing in on obesity amongst seafarers even more aggressively and has made this clear in their guidance to MCA Approved Doctors. The December Newsletter requires ADs, from 1 January 2014, to identify the number of seafarers examined who have a Body Mass Index of over 35 and to record the category of certificate issued to

the seafarer, including details of restrictions or weight reduction targets and what, if any, physical capability testing was conducted. This information will be collected, anonymously, in the annual returns for 2014. The Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing the weight in Kg by the square of the height in metres. It is a helpful guide to weight excess although is not fool-proof when, for example, a person is very fit and muscular and without any spare fat. The muscle weight can push up the BMI into apparently overweight levels but it is clear, from a check on the waist, that there is not a weight issue – waist measurement is especially revealing in men who normally put on excess calories around the waist (for women, it is the buttocks initially). However, the majority of people are not actually very fit and muscular and so, whilst waist circumference is better, the BMI remains a valid parameter – in fact, the normal ratio is 20-25, 25-30 means overweight, 30-35 is obese, and 35-40 is very obese. Obese is not a nice word and very obese is even worse.

The ENG1 guidelines for obesity already advise caution when the BMI is over 30 and when there are also other concerns such as raised blood pressure. This combination of obesity and other abnormalities can lead to a shorter ENG1 particularly if no action is taken by the seafarer following advice at a previous medical.

which announced that the number of overweight and obese adults in the developing world has almost quadrupled since 1980 to around one billion and that one in three people worldwide is now overweight. The report predicts a “huge increase” in heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.

If the BMI actually exceeds 35 then a two year unrestricted certificate is not allowed at all but is time-limited, probably to one year initially, and may also be restricted if other factors affect fitness.

Globally, the percentage of adults who are overweight or obese has grown from 23% to 34% between 1980 and 2008. The majority of this increase is seen in the developing world with a shift in foodstuffs from cereals and grains to fats, sugar, oils and animal produce. A total of 904 million people in developing countries are now classed as overweight or obese, up from 250 million in 1980 – an almost 4-fold increase when during the same time the world population has just doubled. The high-income countries such as North America still head the statistics with 70% adults being overweight or obese, compared with 44% in 1980 – Australasia and southern Latin America are close behind at 63% currently, and Europe is around 58%. Ironically there is still a food shortage for great swathes of the global population which adds to the hugeness of the total imbalance.

Some candidates object on the grounds of their perceived personal fitness but there are also safety issues to be considered particularly when evacuation through narrow spaces has to be anticipated. The UK oil and gas offshore industry is already researching standards in the light of workforce changes – the average offshore worker is now 19% heavier than in the 1980s, a feature of an ageing population – and this has implications in, for example, moving around confined spaces and also in helicopter safety and evacuation procedures. Many of the safety issues are common to seafarers and there is likely to be some convergence of medical guidance in the future with increasing caution when assessing obese, and possibly older, individuals. At the time of writing, the BBC published a report from the UK Overseas Development Institute

Globally the obesity problem needs political motivation and muscle but, as we each may be finding individually in February, there could be a substantial personal problem as we try to get back into shape.

REVIEWING YOUR YACHT INSURANCE?

Jens Ploch - Sales Pantaenius Spain (+34) 971 70 86 70 “Careful sailors often take out yacht insurance on the basis that they will never file a claim! A quick look at the insurance statistics will perhaps dispel this belief. Every year heavy storms destroy marinas, sometimes completely, and cause severe damage to yachts. Yacht owners also know how possible it is to run aground. These cases not only lead to structural damage but can also result in the sinking of a vessel and possible salvage and wreck removal costs which can, in certain cases, surpass the value of the yacht. Yacht insurance specialist Pantaenius annually records numerous boatyard fires, resulting in total losses of many of the stored yachts. Anyone who does not have yacht hull insurance can, as a rule, say goodbye to their boat as the boatyard’s liability cover may be limited. Pantaenius statistics also show that theft is the most common claim, together with collision and fire, and despite taking customary precautions, yacht owners have limited chance

of preventing this. Expensive yacht equipment being stored off the yacht in winter may be completely written off, depending on the circumstances. Yacht owners also quickly realise how important it is to have third party liability insurance as soon as they receive an invoice for damage they have caused. If, for example, an accident that occurs while mooring causes damage to other vessels or even marina installations, it is essential (compulsory in most EU Countries) to have third party liability insurance in place. This becomes even more dramatic if accidents involve personal damage like death, incapacity or invalidity. Such substantial or continuous payments can be covered by sound third party liability insurance, or P&I on larger vessels. A comprehensive yacht insurance affords protection in most of the above mentioned cases, and understanding the scope of your current cover is essential for peace of mind. During the next issues, yacht insurance specialist Pantaenius will be featuring a series of articles to provide clarification of yacht insurance wording and terminology, and what yacht owners should be looking out for.

The Wallycento fleet builds on: the third unit is signed and under construction. The convincing debut of Hamilton and Magic Carpet3 duelling on the race course, persuaded an American passionate Owner to join the club of the innovative box-ruled super yachts: the wallycento third unit was recently signed and the construction is under way. “The Wally Class and the Wallycento Class’s successful competitiveness attracted the new owner” explains Luca Bassani, Wally and Wally Class President “who is a keen sailor and racer, determined to participate in all our regattas, as well as to cruise in the Mediterranean”. About Wallycento Wallycento is the unprecedented box-ruled superyacht by Wally: a groundbreaking super yacht developed from the innovative lines of the latest racing yachts featuring reduced

displacement, a powerful sail plan, moveable ballast, improved stability and planing hull characteristics. Cento stands for onehundred, that is the overall length in feet of the new racer-cruiser: it is the perfect size to combine absolute comfort, outstanding performance, and racing manoeuvrability. The simple Wallycento box-rule has been designed to create closely matched fast seaworthy sound cruiser-racers that benefit from the latest performance technology, respecting the Wally spirit.

design has been applied to the deckhouse and the coaming that is completely covered by teak to be integrated into the rest of the deck. Inside, the layout and the styling are very similar to those of Magic Carpet3 , but the galley has been moved to the port side and the crew cabin to the starboard side to avoid any interference of the access to the engine room with the meal preparation. Furthermore, the new Wallycento is the first to feature the bow thruster, enhancing the cruising capability of this class of super yachts. “The sale of the Wallycento third unit confirms the success of the formula” says Bassani “We are confident to further expand the fleet of these super yachts, that share similar high performance to increase the closeness of the racing and the competitive level while remaining very comfortable and fully equipped cruising yachts.” “Cruising in comfort at the

speed of the fastest maxi racer and racing at the highest level of competition is the dream of every passionate yachtsman – continues Bassani– Wallycento is the first and only super yacht making this dream come true. By keeping the boats very similar in size and concept, the Wallycento Class offers closer racing within a narrow rating range.” The construction of Wallycento #3 has already started at Green Marine, UK with the delivery of the male plug, while the lamination of the female mould on the male plug is scheduled in January, and the lamination of the hull around mid February. The launching is set for June 2015. The sale of the Wallycento #3 marks a great ending of the year for Wally, that is currently building an array of motor boats recently signed, including the 26m Wallyace, 73 Wallypower, 55 Wallypower, 47 Wallypower, Wallyone.

Developed by Reichel Pugh naval architects with the exterior styling and interiors by Wally, the third Wallycento differs from Magic Carpet3, designed by the same architect duo, in many aspects both technical and stylistic. She features different hull lines with a rig that has been balanced accordingly. She has one rudder versus the two of Magic Carpet3. The shaft line is mechanical, whilst remaining retractable. A January Jaunt I’m not going to lie, I have found it difficult to galvanise my friends into action when it comes to a winter SUP. “Hey come out paddling with me, it’s 14 degrees outside and the sea temperature’s around the same, it’ll be such fun”. “No it won’t, I’d rather get stuck in a lift with Tom Cruise and Justin Bieber”. “Oh, ok”. Drastic times called for drastic measures so I pulled a photo of the best beach in Mallorca out of the bag (Portals Vells – just voted number one of ‘12 undiscovered beaches in Europe’), whacked it on Facebook and pitched: “warm wetsuits, beginners welcome”. Clearly my chosen profession (marketing) is the right one, as the tactic worked and within a few hours I’d gathered together a tantalising team of ten enthusiastic SUPers.

When push came to Sunday morning shove, two dropped out (both men, you know who you are, heavy night Saturday by any chance eh lads?!) but eight remained. Add Eugenio, the instructor from www.bellini.es, and I’d achieved the great feat of getting nine people up out of bed, for a watersport, on a Sunday morning, in January. Cue ear-to-ear grin. Task number one was to wriggle into nine wetsuits and get nine Red Paddle Co 10’8” Mega inflatable boards out of their bags and blown rigid. If this had been down to my puny biceps and a foot pump, we’d have been at it for hours, but thanks to a smart-thinking Eugenio and two tanks of compressed air, it was child’s play. The sight of nine identical boards neatly lined-up on a postcard-perfect Balearic beach was a feast for my OCD-neatfreak sore eyes. A quick photo call, then to the water. Now, when I started SUPing

As we weaved our way out of Portals Vells, round into Cala Xada and into Calo de Sa Nostra Dona, the scenery was quite breathtaking. One of our number hosted an impromptu SUP Pilates class halfway round (much guffawing from the eight year old) and a few of the more foolhardy ones (yes, me included) abandoned our wetsuits and went in for an

Illustration: Claire Christina Bentley invigorating swim at the end. Onlookers grabbed their cameras in astonishment, presumably to capture the moment they “saw some morons swimming in Portals Vells” for their Facebook wall. Yes, we all know that Mallorca is beautiful, we’ve all lived there long enough, but to see it from the water, and to experience it all in January, whilst the people of Northern Europe are only getting out of their onesies in real emergencies, was a little reminder that, whilst not all of our decisions in life have been perfect, moving to Mallorca may just have been a very good one. If you fancy a go, Bellini will take anyone from a five year old (towed behind with a fun-sized paddle) to a 75 year old, one person to groups of 15, and they’re open throughout the winter. Prices start from 20 euros a head for three hours including equipment hire.

(May 2012), I spent a generous amount of time falling in. My ‘Elvis legs’ were uncontrollable for the first part of the session and at the slightest whiff of a wave I was underwater. I assumed this was normal beginner behaviour. For this particular January SUP we had three beginners – including a brave adventurous eight year old girl – and when they asked if it was hard, I crossed my fingers behind my back, grew a Pinocchio nose and said “don’t worry, you won’t fall in, the wetsuit’s just there for warmth, you’ll be fine, it’s easy”. Fortunately the weather was kind, around 17 degrees and quite sunny, but a quick glance into the turquoise waters of Portals Vells revealed a fair few of those pesky purple jellyfish floating in the Baltic 14 degree water and all I could do was look skywards and pray that the newbies had better balance than I did. Turns out I was a bit of a “special needs” beginner – not one of the nine fell in. And, mercifully, the eight year old took to it like a pro so we could cover a four kilometre distance without the need to make any allowances. What a star.

Katie Handyside Personal Trainer (+34) 636 322 959 www.katiehandyside.com Exercise Tips: Switch up your training-for many exercises, you can play around with the 1 full rep and 1 ½ rep style - lowering to the bottom position, coming halfway back up, and then lowering again, and then coming all the way back up. This works with squats, lunges, push-ups, and dips – great way to shock your muscles. Build Strenght Equally and Challenge Yourself: Instead of doing exercises using hands, arms or legs try to do single limb exercises, not only do you activate your core muscles more to balance but you also recruit more muscles and challenge your body (and brain) in the process. Try 1-leg squats, 1-leg bench squats, Bulgarian split squats, split squats, forward lunges, reverse lunges, step-ups, reaching lunges, 1-leg deadlifts, 1-leg hip extensions, if you are doing isolation exercises- 1 armed bicep curls, tricep extensions etc. No Equiptment - No Worries 8 Different Bodyweight Push Ups for Your Boat: - Pushups- regular - Close-grip pushups - Decline pushup - Elevated pushups - Staggered push-ups - Pushups with your feet on the ball/bench/chair/step - Pushups with your hands on the ball/bench/chair/step - Spiderman pushups - Pike pushups - Or possibly the hardest 2 hand pushup of them all, decline close-grip Spiderman pushups

Spiderman Push Up. No Bench? If you have dumbbells or kettlebells or simply weighted bottles or cans but no bench, you can still do presses, rows, and leg exercises, you just need to be creative. For a chest press, simply lie on the floor Use 20% less weight, lie flat on the ground, and do 5 repetitions more than normal to make up for the lighter weight. Add in an extra pause for one second where your upper arms contact the floor. It will make this exercise harder on your triceps. Brace your abs and put your legs straight up in the air to recruit your core muscles more and stop you cheating by pushing through your legs/feet For DB Rows, you will use 20% less weight again, and have to brace your abs even harder. Place your non-working hand on a steady support or surface, or even on your opposite thigh, step forward with the leg on the opposite side of the working arm, and step slightly back with the leg on the working side. Brace your abs, keep your low back slightly flexed (or the opposite of rounding your low back), and row the dumbbell slowly up to your side, then slowly return. Go slower and do a few more reps because of the lighter weight you are using. Instead of doing bench step-ups do DB Split Squats or Reverse Lunges. You can finish these off by hopping forward and backward on the same leg.m

Lesson 3: Love What you Do Do you love what you do? Be honest with yourself. Does it give you a buzz when you sit down (or stand up) to do it? Does it make you feel alive? Fulfil you? Is it something the 8 year old you would have been excited about growing up to become? If the answer to those questions is “Hell no” then maybe it’s time to turn that response into a “Hell yes!” No? Doing what you love for a living isn’t a luxury, it’s our generations birthright. We were fortunate enough to have been born into a world where our earning potential isn’t wedded to soul-destroying production lines, factories or coal mines. So let’s milk that! People just like you are finding their passion and turning it into their day-job all the time. And it’s something that we can all do if we’re willing to put in a bit of proactive introspection. As a hypnotherapist and life coach I see people everyday who break free from their limiting beliefs, unwanted habits and negative mindsets to go on and live the kind of lives they once envied in others: lives that fulfil them, empower them and make them happy. Now, obviously I can’t help you live your life’s passion in 400 words or less, but I can point you in the right direction and help you open the floodgates to possibility. So here goes... Discovering your passion:

Step 1: Get a large sheet of paper and write down as many things as possible that you’d love to make a living doing. Make this list as rich and as full as possible and don’t self-edit at this stage. Step 2: Write down the thing or things you can talk about for hours and hours without tiring. For me it’s personal development and the unconscious mind... Step 3: Write down every activity you do and have done that brings you the most enjoyment in life. Step 4: Write down all the things that those close to you say you’re brilliant at. Don’t be humble. What are you the “go to person” for? Step 5: Think about the people you admire most in life (your idols), write down who they are and what it is you admire most about them. Step 6: Go back to your initial list and prioritise the top 10 things you’d like to try. If you crave more out of life and want to create an action-plan and mindset to achieve it, call or email me today to add arrange a one-2-one Personal Breakthrough Session.

DIVE REFRESHER TRAINING

Refresher training essential Nick Stael von Holstein Nick@ondineescape.com Keeping current with your scuba skills is essential to ensure you are ready for your up and coming season. This is something you will learn during your first Open Water training course. The general rule being, if its been a year since you last dived, its important you do a refresher session to brush up on your skills before you go off for a dive. This is especially important if you are preparing for the summer having had a winter season downtime or refit period. Not only important for yourself but also to be prepared to handle owners and guests who want to get the dive gear out and blow some bubbles. Training should form part of a general safety procedures review and should be a combination of a skills review session and some fun dives.

Ask yourself the following questions: Can you maintain neutral buoyancy in an upside position with your nose touching a pointy rock outcrop? What’s the procedure for handling a low on air or out of air emergency? Remember how to calculate how much surface interval time is required between two planned dives using the dive tables? How do you handle an anxious out of practice or panicked diver? How about navigating your way through a dive site with low visibility and finding your way back to your starting point without having to surface. As a crew member conducting diving with guests, it is our recommendation at Ondine, you should be trained as a Rescue Diver as a minimum; a level of certification that trains you to be able to assist, care for and handle an injured diver or diver in difficulty. Keeping up with your rescue skills requires regular practice. We have

Freddy Boy!! developed a unique Rescue Refresher Training Workshop for exactly this purpose. Plus just getting back in the water and doing a few fun dives is the best ‘Refreshing’ you can do, as that’s what it’s all about really. For a general refresher, we have some fun and challenging skill reviews and challenges to ensure you are in tip-top form and a model diver. Fitness is equally important. Just like when you go off on ski holiday, it’s always a good idea to take on a workout regime to prepare your unused muscles and establish a general level of good fitness for the slopes. Diving does not have to be an arduous or strenuous activity but think about how you feel after a morning of a couple of dives when you are out of practice. I guarantee you will have a tired feeling. First and foremost, get in the pool or better still the ocean, if it’s warm enough, and swim some laps. Second, a combination

of gym, biking and sport activities a few times a week is recommended. Paddle boarding is a good option for a comprehensive body workout and aerobic burn. All these will improve your air consumption rate. Most of all have fun with whatever exercise activity you take on. Free diving is an excellent option for developing fitness too and also a tremendous skill to learn and maintain for handling and being prepared for supporting general watersport activities onboard. We conduct regular workshops and training courses for free diving with our Ondine Association Global Ambassador and world record holder free diver Chris Redl. Next course is 26th/27th April. So you know who to get in touch with to sort out your Refresher Training, Ondine Escape is here to help! Big Bubbles, No Troubles!

aquarium, the O-Team could not have imagined this day would end up being such a huge success. Many thanks for everyone who helped and participated; we are a community of local people that really do care for the sea! Plus my mum had you all sing her happy birthday, legendary crowd, she will remember that forever, thank you! brad@asociacionondine.org www.asociacionondine.org Let’s Keep This Fishy Goodness Going Folks! The last few months have been nothing short of astounding when it comes to the growing local support for Asociacion Ondine and the obvious need for serious marine research, awareness & conservation actions at a local level here in the Balearic Islands. The growing amount of local support was shown by the huge turn out for our Absolute Boat Care sponsored FUNdraising & Awareness day on Sunday the 19th of January. With over 300 adults in our presentation and around 200 kids touring the

Part of the presentation was the Ondine Marine App data collection project and all the benefits this would have for Asociacion Ondine´s initiatives, as well as the huge marketing benefits involved for pioneering companies that sponsor sections of the App. Well, I can happily, very happily, announce that Master Yachts have committed to sponsorship of the Marine Debris section of the Ondine Marine App. This is not a small commitment; this is a €12000 a year commitment from a local Yacht Management company that has the foresight to see not only the marketing benefits they receive but the positive environmental impact their commitment will make to the cleanliness of our local sea and coastlines.

Over 300 adults and 200 kids attended the FUNdraising day

How many marketing opportunities for sea based businesses give you huge value for money, extensive exposure to your target market – at all levels, establish and/or reinforce your environmental image and directly assist in local marine research & conservation? Why wouldn’t local marine businesses jump on this opportunity, and they are! Welcome to the O-Team Master Yachts, a pleasure to have you on board! So back to our FUNdraiser & Awareness day! Sitting in presentations can be quite boring at times, unless the audience gets involved. So I thought it would be nice to ask a few questions directly and also ask one important question on our membership form.

The first two group questions were; • How many marine reserves in Mallorca? • Where are the marine reserves in Mallorca? Sadly, the majority of the audience could not answer either question confidently, which reinforced our beliefs that a Balearic Islands Marine Reserve Public Awareness Campaign is necessary and our plans must be built on to ensure all locals in Mallorca have access to this initiative. The next group questions were; • How many people have smart phones, ipads or tablets? • How many of these same people go the coast and beach

Brad Robertson holding court!

SEIPPEL & LIGHT MARINE UPDATE as well as go out on boats? • How many people want to help with data collection? Almost everyone in the room answered yes to those 3 questions, which was a fantastic sign for the public use and engagement with our Ondine Marine App project. Their reaction to this project was overwhelmingly positive! Happy days! I think we are onto a winner! What is the most important marine related environmental issue YOU would like dealt with? This was the question we asked on our form, with the top 4 responses from around 200 people being: 1. Marine debris & pollution 2. Marine Reserves – Improving the management – Improving protection – increasing the number 3. Public Awareness through clear information and

education initiatives 4. Overfishing So how do I feel about these responses in relation to the direction Asociacion Ondine is taking? Fantastic! That’s how I feel! Having input from our local community that has confirmed our projects are not only needed but are now being requested is an absolutely fantastic thing. We are on the right track indeed! Science, Community & Conservation….get on board folks, you are all very welcome! For more information regarding corporate sponsorship of the Ondine Marine App, Memberships or our future projects please do not hesitate to contact me, Brad@asociacionondine.org.

STRAIGHT TALK ON THE DOSH

Phil D. Coffers The Islander Economics Correspondent In, Out or Shake it All About Late last month Britain’s chancellor George Osborne delivered a speech that was designed to the drive the agenda, silence the mumblings in his own party, play to the gallery and create a voice for the not so tiny majority of European Union (EU) members who were not part of the Eurozone (EZ) currency bloc. To an extent he managed to do all of these things and more. The turmoil in the EU and EZ of late have left many people across the continent, not least the Great British public looking on and wringing their hands wondering if the whole thing had been a terrible mistake, and mulling over whether to give it up as a bad job. As a result, the cheerleaders of the ‘shove it, we’re off’ approach, UKIP have been doing rather well from all sectors, but particularly from the Eurosceptic right of the Tory party. To keep them happy Osborne and Cameron have promised an ‘in or out’ referendum by 2017, should they be elected with a

majority when the country goes to the polls in the general election on 7th May next year. All well and good, but ‘out’ isn’t really an option that many feel the UK could live with. The body language coming from the White House and the exponential rise of the giant economies of the East tend to suggest that you need to be in the club to make your impact these days. Conversely ‘in’ doesn’t seem to be much of a palatable policy either. The Eurozone members have painted themselves into a corner of closer fiscal ties as they reluctantly cozy up to attempt to mimimise the economic damage of continued membership of the club. Effectively the interests of non members of the Euro are being squeezed out as the majority of decisions in the EU are driven not by the bigger economic picture, or the desire to forge ahead as a trading bloc, but to ‘Do whatever is necessary to save the Euro’ to quote Barosso, President of the European Commission. These are not always, or even often, the same thing. Until recently that made the non-Euro members of the EU something of a minority. However, with

the continuing expansion of the EU the minority continues to grow. There are currently 10 member states in this situation UK, Sweden, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Denmark, Czech Republic, Croatia and Bulgaria, a little over a third of the bloc. Osborne’s speech was designed to rally together this third, attempt to dictate policy with a little more authority and in effect to plant the seeds of making the ‘in’ option a little more palatable to the UK electorate. Mr Osborne said that if Europe is going to solve its “competitive problem, we need to think big”. He added it was essential to “protect the collective interests of non-eurozone member states” while the rest of the EU forged stronger links. “The biggest economic risk facing Europe doesn’t come from those who want reform and renegotiation. It comes from a failure to reform and renegotiate. It is the status quo which condemns the people of Europe to an ongoing economic crisis and continuing decline.” He’s right. Eurozone policy makers have been so focussed on saving their currency for the last five years or so that they appear to have barely noticed that the rest of the World,

the East in particular have been forging ahead taking a competitive advantage. Even the U.S. and the U.K economies have performed much more strongly than their EU counterparts due, in part to the freedom to make the choices about what is best for them directly. While the countries of the EU are not as powerful as they once were they still remain a global hothouse of scientific and engineering excellence amongst many other attributes and should, in fact need, to be doing very much better than they are. So while Osborne’s speech was aimed at many different ears, lets hope that those in Brussels were also cocked in the direction of number 11 Downing Street. What they will have heard, was the line designed to grab the headlines, that without reform in policy the UK might “face a choice between joining the euro or leaving” the EU. Was that an ultimatum?, will it work?. Time will tell, but it is a risky promise to leave hanging in the air, but at least it hints at a determined direction amidst the directionless panic that has characterised the Euro’s policy makers for far too long.

AROUND THE REGIONS BARCELONA

A cylinder head or engine overhaul costs a little more than a tappet adjustment. Barry Rogers www.watertight-marine.com Barry@watertight-marine.com

Spare Some Thought For Your Trusty Tappets As the days get longer and you start thinking about motoring around on the ocean waves, spare a thought for your tappets. Tappets keep valves open, or sealed shut, depending on where the pistons are in your engine’s cycle. In other words they keep the valves in the correct position so that the engine performs as the manufacturer intended. We occasionally see engines in which these tiny but essential parts have been neglected. A common reason is that access is difficult in engine rooms with limited overhead clearance. If not adjusted correctly, the engine could be noisy, overconsume and underperform. In more serious cases you could have an expensive failure. It’s a job that has to be completed according to manufacturer’s guidelines (every 200 hours on average)

and it’s vitally important for the correct running of your engine. Modern performance engines usually come with 4 valves per cylinder and use bridging rockers, so if a pair of valves has not been correctly adjusted more force will be exerted on one or the other side of the bridging rocker causing it to wear faster. If they fracture, serious engine damage will result. A cause of engine performance loss is the gap at which the rocker-to-valve is set. As the valve seat starts to wear, the valve gets pushed further up the valve stem. This causes the valve-to-rocker gap to get smaller and eventually without correct adjustment will close the gap. The valve will then stay open on the compression stroke, meaning a collapse in fuel economy and performance. Some engines now are fitted with hydraulic valve lifters and do not need adjustment - the Volvo Penta D6 for example. Experienced engineers that know an engine well will be able to tell if they develop a fault.

CHANDLERY

Hydraulic lifters keep valves in their correct location with oil pressure. A fault will be given away by a clattering, which usually disappears after a few seconds when oil pressure is resumed. Most owners and yacht professionals probably feel that they don’t need to know exactly what’s going on inside their engine. But it does pay to know the components your engine has, and to be familiar with the maintenance schedule that the manufacturer recommends. You can then ask your service provider to perform the specified tasks. Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to know more about what you have installed on board.

Boatwide started in 2005 in Castelldefels, Barcelona as a manufacturer of custom made tanks in the marine, vehicle and industrial sectors. Their high quality polyethylene tanks are purchased by Individuals, service/maintenance companies, chandleries, super yachts and boat builders. BoatWide tanks have also been used in military applications, renewable energy and industry sectors. Their customers also include Barcelona World Race & Volvo Ocean Race teams. The products which they supply include : Marine16 - The Best British Biocide, used by the Royal Navy, RNLI & Royal Marines. It has 5 stars and is “Recommended” due to its effectiveness in killing bacteria. The base ingredient is 3.3-methylenebis (5-methyloxazolidine) a powerful biocide

Marina Port Vell Completes Reception Platform, Building Underway Marina Port Vell (MPV), Barcelona—set to become one of the world’s most elite superyacht destinations and, with phased marina completions throughout 2014, the pre-eminent home port in the Mediterranean—is pleased to announce the completion of its reception platform, the ratification of structural architectural plans and interior design as well as office accommodations for complementary businesses. MPV expects to create its own nautical hub in this facility to complement that of the broader Barcelona Nautical Cluster.

and manufactured by Escofet, a traditional Catalonian company known for more than 100 years for its stunning architectural accents throughout Barcelona, including the Passeig de Gracia and les Rambles. In addition to receiving guests and serving as the customer service center for the marina, the Reception Building will also feature a Captain and Crew Lounge, a dedicated crew area

and terrace for BBQ and relaxing with ample space, a gym and terrace. The reception facility also includes a treatment room, spa services and offices. BWA has already committed to office space for its Spanish headquarters. All available 25 offices for lease offer terrace access.

Incorporating Catalan cultural accents with architecture and interior design by Sergi Carulla and Óscar Blasco (SCOB) and the crew area fashioned by Equipo Creativo, MPV’s Reception and Business Center is being built into the sea, incorporates sustainable practices and is 2750 square meters. The building lies on a fixed piled platform of 1,600 square meters. John Alcantara - International Boat & Yacht Brokers www.boatshedgibraltar.com Steering Failure - Lessons from an Unpleasant Experience It was a perfect sailing day with a westerly F5 gusting F6. We were taking a Jeanneau 54DS out for a shakedown sail after some adjustments to the in-mast furling gear. We decided to unfurl in the harbour as there were lumpy seas beyond the harbour entrances. Just as we headed into wind we lost steering on the starboard helm and 30 secs later on the port helm too. Before we knew it the yacht was going round in circles and getting perilously close to the harbour wall and rocks. The initial diagnosis was that this was a steering cable failure. We still had a rudder. Unfortunately not being as familiar as I should have been with this yacht I did not know where the emergency tiller was located. This was no time to start emptying lockers. The second steering option was to use the vessel’s autopilot. The actuator arm of the autopilot is connected directly to the steering quadrant on most (but not all) yachts. With some directional control restored we moved into the centre of the harbour to practice how we would return to our “stern to” berth back at the marina with a steady F5 on the beam. We alerted the marina on the VHF and they offered us a bows to berth but not a side on hammerhead berth which we could have drifted on to. Any repair in the coming days would be made very awkward with a “bows to” berth so I elected to go back to the “stern to” berth we had left 30 minutes earlier. The autopilot works best when

GIBRALTER & IBIZA

the boat is moving forward at a good speed. It does not work at all in reverse as it commands the rudder in the opposite direction to that required. To cut a long story short we glided back into the marina slightly faster than normal and managed to reverse into the berth without putting a scratch on the boat. These are the lessons I learned yesterday: 1. Know where you emergency tiller is stowed! 2. Know how your autopilot drives the rudder. If it is connected to the quadrant then you have an alternative way of the steering the boat. 3. Ask the marina for an easier berth and for assistance. They prefer to help you than have to untangle you from other peoples mooring lines. 4. It’s a good idea to practice manoeuvring the vessel in close quarters under autopilot. One day you may have to do it for real. 5. Anticipate the headings you will need to take up as you come in to the marina and use the steering compass to predict the headings you will need to punch into the autopilot. 6. Plan an exit strategy for a go around if required. Never box yourself in. 7. In reverse the autopilot is useless! It will drive you in the wrong direction. Don’t try reversing unless you have a bow thruster for directional control and even then you will need to need to play with the plus and minus buttons on autopilot to keep the rudder on the centreline. I had a lucky escape! Don’t forget to examine your cable and pulley steering assembly at least once a year - prevention is better than cure!

MENORCA

Elizabeth Parr Menorca Cruising (+34) 660 647 845 www.menorcasailing.co.uk Vendee Menorca Cruise Week June 7-14th 2014 Menorca Cruising is helping to organise the 2nd Vendee Menorca which will take place from 7th to 14th June this year. The inaugural Vendee Menorca Week took place between 10 and 15 June 2013. Starting from Marina Mahon, the event for sail cruising yachts circumnavigated Menorca over the course of 5 days. During the event the yachts stopped in the popular harbours of Fornells, Addaia and Ciutadella. This year there will be a longer leg to Mallorca, but of course the final course will be dependent on the winds. Three of Menorca Cruising’s boats have already been booked for the event. The winning team from last year has again booked our sailing instructor Heidi Frith as their skipper for the event. Some of the crew started the week as novices and ended as Competent Crew.

AROUND THE REGIONS

Sponsored by Anderson Entertainments, the event was the idea of XC42 owner Mike Crompton, whose yacht “Xpletive” finished the week in 3rd place overall. The 2013 event was blessed with blue skies, although it did suffer from some light conditions. Day 2 from Fornells to Ciudadella provided perfect racing conditions with seconds separating the leading boats. The event was dominated by teams from the UK, the winner being a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 DS, chartered for the event by Rick Hartley. Second overall was the Dufour 40 Sport “Pandora” skippered by Jon Morrison.

Rick Hartley and his winning team of the 2013 Vendee Menorca.

The event majored on Menorca being an ideal venue to circumnavigate in 5 days or less thereby allowing for fluctuating weather conditions but without recourse to night racing. Overnight stopovers were designed with social events at each venue. Anderson Entertainments provided a lavish last night party as well as sponsoring one of the boats, a Bavaria 36 “Poniente”, made available from Menorca Cruising to teams travelling from the UK. This year the event will coincide with the 60th Birthday of Mike Crompton and so the social events promise to be the best ever. If you would like to take part in your own boat please send an email to Menorca Cruising and we will forward further information.

ACCESS DENIED “No.” “But they will be back today?” “Don’t know.” Yay, progress. A two word answer!

Rod Gutry-Freelance Illustration, Photography. (+34) 675 209 649 rod.gutry@gmail.com www.rodgutry.com It’s an interesting time of the year here in the Balearics. The temperature and weather has been relatively behaved and there is a lot of pre-season work going on. This means that while boats and crews are gearing up for the first voyage away they are not necessarily looking for day workers. A large proportion of vessels are in dry-dock getting the barnies removed and a fresh coat applied, while others are doing refits, re-powering, re-plating, re-carpeting, re-everything! The boats at dock are starting to have crew back from holidays or new crew being introduced to the vessel.

So what does this mean for day workers? The first thing is that with no owners due on board everyone can, (although not always) look very similar and herein lies the problem. Not always is the person you talk to from the dock, the person that you need to talk to in terms of work. Even if they look the part and seem to know what they are on about. There are going to be times when the answer to your questions will be met by a sometimes monolithic reply.. in words of very few syllables. “Gidday mate! Is the skipper on board?” “No.” “Ok what about first mate?” “No.” “Anyone at all that makes the decisions?” “No.” “Ok do you know when they’ll be back?”

Now to be fair, sometimes the skipper will just slip off the boat and not let the team know, so answers like these can be absolutely genuine, and of course, how you ask the question depends on the reply. But what if the person you are talking to is actually just like you? Another dock plodder looking for scraps of work doing whatever it takes? Then friends it get’s really interesting. Because if you are on a boat and wanting to get every last hour of temporary work out of her you need to protect your potential earnings. Here are some sneaky excuses for not letting competition onboard.

the first mate.. and the second and the chief engineer.” “Ah you just missed him, he’s gone for a business lunch, breakfast, dinner.” “His wife’s just come on board after him being away for month...so..” Or a particular favourite of mine, if you know any strange or unusual languages you can put a confused look on your face and say, “Çfarë? Unë nuk e kuptoj” (Albanian for What? I don’t understand). But what if you are the one trying to get onboard? For the really bold here’s a good opening gambit. “Gidday mate, I was having a beer with the skipper last night at the pub and he said drop by tomorrow he may have some work..”

“Good luck mate, you can come on if you want, but the old man just said he has had it up to here with being interrupted today and the next interruption is going OB.”

But beware when telling porkies and stay on your toes.

“Nah sorry mate we just treated the deck, Health and safety. No shoes on board and I can’t let you on barefooted for your own health. What? Nah it’s a new chemical mate you wouldn’t know it. I can’t even pronounce it mate. Good luck though.” “Sorry mate owner’s due any minute now.”

“Actually I’m the Captain and I don’t remember going to the pub or talking to you last night!”

“Really? he said that did he?” “Yeah yeah, can I come on?”

“Really? Whats the name of this boat again?”

Stewardess Embarrassing Stories;

Trying to conceal the mishap I gently patted myself down with a napkin, silently hoping that I didn’t look like a bad version of Kiss with smudged mascara and a toilet disaster. I then turned to the guests, smiled gave a cheeky wink, and commented that perhaps the bottle was just as excited as the Boss was to see these beautiful ladies. I then rushed away to make a quick change in my cabin.

This two-week program is designed for people interested in the arts or healing arts who want to make a positive impact in the lives of children in a cross-cultural setting. Participants will be required to lead or teach one activity or class for children with the support of their team and leaders. The options for activities are endless because the children enjoy EVERYTHING. You could lead a yoga class, meditation, painting the school, or just a playful game. Developing leadership skills is empowering and sharing your gifts with these children could be one of the most satisfying experiences of your life. In addition to creating arts and activities with the children, you will also have an opportunity to bond within our own Art Revolution group. We will have nightly activities and group discussions. You will also have the opportunity to participate in any of the group activities offered by Botshabelo. Lastly, we will also be taking excursions

Following on from Simon the editors embarrassing tale in last months edition I felt that it was only right to spill the beans on my own embarrassing yachting fable. Whilst working as the Chief Stew a few years ago the Boss had a couple of salubrious lady guests onboard. I was cracking open another bottle of Champagne when suddenly the bottle accidentally exploded all over me, literally all over my freshly made up face, all over my now see through polo top and all down my skorts. It looked like I’d wet myself.

Evidently I was right, by the time I made it back to sun deck the guests had disappeared, evidently to the master cabin! This was my Bridget Jones yachting moment. What was yours?

Everyone, nearly everyone in my social sphere has excelled themselves, shown themselves to be paragons of virtue and worthiness. And, I must, dear friends include my good self here in this show of moral rectitude. For, let me think here, for at least 12 hours not a single drop of any intoxicating beverage has passed these righteous little lips. I have juiced, green tea’d, drank, eaten and smeared coconut oil over every available place (the dog has avoided me ever since) - I have had, the irreproachable pleasure of saying ‘no thanks’. Ting! That was my halo. And with this thought in mind I have chosen the following recipe because it sort of sums up how ‘holier than thou’ I am feeling at the moment. I can

relate to this recipe. If this recipe was a person, then it would be my best friend we would enjoy sleepovers together, plait each others hair. Simple and elegant and good for you. Heavens above, it doesn’t get much better, does it? I’ve chosen to use banana leaves - I can hear you freaking out now - banana leaves, where in Gods name to I buy banana leaves or she going to suggest I shimmy up the nearest banana palm? Well, relax, you can buy them in the freezer department at good ol Carrefour - I just love that supermarket. Banana leaves are remarkably versatile - fill them with almost anything (prawns, fish etc) whip up a marinade and chuck em on the barbie or in the oven. Use them to decorate your starter, or bought sushi - no one will believe you didn’t make that sushi. Make banana boat to serve rice or a salad - cut a long rectangle of leaf - gently fold

The vineyards and the winery are all located in Algaida, which belongs to the tiny, demarcated Spanish Designation of Origin (D.O.) region known as Pla i Llevant. There are two different vineyard sites in the local municipality, in an area known as the Pla de Mallorca; so they are cultivated right in the central heart of the island. On the road to Pina, the Son Reus vineyard lies among rural medieval houses which gave their name to the place after the conquest; superceding the original name of Butibalausí given to the hamlet (alqueria) in Muslim times. The soils here are reddish (call vermell) and the vista on the horizon is the stunning backdrop of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The Son Roig Vineyard lies in a

small estate situated in an idyllic landscape of gently undulating fields, full of almond, carob and fig trees. Sheltered by the Randa and Son Roig hills, the soil is a mixture of clay and limestone, being really optimal for the vines to be able to absorb their essential moisture.

takes place into new barrels followed by barrel ageing, and for the red wines, ageing is in new or 1 year old barrels over at least 12 months. The names of the wines represent our lands or some of the closest and remarkable place names connected to our family.

Founded as recently 1979, despite there being a long family tradition in winemaking before this date, the winery uses up-to-date technology to enable a specific production for each type and style of wine. Built up by the family with considerable effort and gradually over time, the bodega’s layout with its storehouses, cellar and orchard spreads over a wide open space similar to that of the ancestral houses in the past. The wine cellar has a tranquil atmosphere and gives ideal conditions for both wine maturation and breeding.

Can Majoral’s 3 young wines are presented under the Butibalausí label; the name derivating from the Moorish hamlet Beneiza Alualenci. The Muslim poet Idris al-Yamân wrote:

In their vineyards the winemakers follow organic farming criteria, which means total respect for the land’s vegetative cycles and the use of organic fertilizers only. From pruning to harvest, thorough controls are undertaken, both for the vine plants’ health and the grape quality. The climate of course is Mediterranean, the average temperature is 18ºC, with mild winters and dry hot summers. Can Majoral is the family nickname; the name given to someone after a personal quality, habit or job… To quote the Catalan linguist Francesc de Borja Moll ‘besides our official name a second and more familiar name appears, given for some sentimental reasons, which is in Catalan language malnom or sobrenom’. The label Can Majoral is for our quality wines. These are characterised either for being varietal or blended wines with a certain variety dominating, to which small percentages of others give the wine higher complexity. In the case of the two white wines, fermentation

NEWS 4 STEWS

Marc Fosh. The Appliance Of Science For some time now, chefs have been portrayed as artists, and I must admit that it’s a title that doesn’t quite fit as far as I’m concerned. Sure enough, to present your food or paint a picture on a plate, an artistic streak helps, but it won’t make you a better cook or turn you into a culinary genius. With a large amount of common sense and a little understanding of kitchen science, you’re more likely to succeed. Chefs that have the ability to be totally unique and original, whilst maintaining some kind of understanding with flavours and textures, might attain cult status and something close to true artistry, but they never forget taste. Taste has nothing to do with art and everything to do with science. What Einstein Told His Cook Two of my favourite books are both about the science of food. I’ll never read them from cover-to-cover, but they are great treasure troves of information on the history and science behind food, cooking techniques, ingredients, physiology and diet. They have also given me a greater appreciation of what I’m doing in the kitchen. Does the alcohol really boil off when we cook with wine? Are smoked foods raw or cooked? Are green potatoes poisonous? Everything from milk, its components and why it curdles, to meat and how animals are slaughtered and why they are hung, is discussed thoroughly in an easy to understand way without being too academic and long-winded.

At the end of the day, cooking is all about blending flavours, chemical reactions, playing with textures and the energy of heat. To achieve the highest standards, one must follow rules; with the help of chemistry you can cook a vegetable to perfection and the whole thing about art is that there are no rules, no boundaries, its about emotions, and while a truly gastronomic experience can move and effect people in many ways, for me, it doesn’t make it art, because the highest scientific principals had to be followed and adhered to make it happen. Much has been written about the so-called “new sensation” that swept through the culinary world over the last decade called molecular gastronomy. This movement applies the principles of chemistry and physics to cooking. By examining how foods react to different cooking methods and which foods combine well on a chemical level, chefs are able to experiment with new food combinations and methods to create unusual menus with stunning results. That’s the theory at least. In the wrong hands it can be a complete disaster! Chocolate & Basil “Cremoso” With Mango And Pollen This is a complex dish in some ways. The flavour combinations may sound unusual but they really do work. It is now a classic recipe at Simply Fosh. Ingredients: (for 4 persons) For the Chocolate “cremoso”: 250ml cream 125ml milk 300g milk chocolate 100g dark chocolate 10 basil leaves 60 sugar 10g egg yolks Whisk the egg yolks & sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy. Bring the cream, milk and basil leaves to the boil and remove from the heat. Pour the warm cream over the egg yolks, return to the saucepan and

Chocolate & Basil “Cremoso” with Mango and Pollen cook over a gentle heat until the mixture starts to thicken. Remove from the heat.

15g sugar 1.5 Gelatin leaves

Break up or chop the chocolate and add to the warm cream. When the chocolate has dissolved, whisk well and pass through a fine sieve. Pour into a plastic container and leave in the fridge to set. Mango-Pollen sorbet: 500g Mango puree 25g glucose 25ml white balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon of pollen Bring to the boil the mango puree, white balsamic and glucose. Remove from the heat and whisk in the pollen. Pass through a fine sieve and churn in a sorbet machine until smooth. Basil Jelly: 50g basil leaves, Blanched 150ml water

Soften the gelatine in cold water. Bring the sugar and water to the boil. Squeeze gelatine dry and add to the sugar syrup. Remove from the heat and whisk until the gelatine has dissolved. Add the basil leaves and puree with a hand blender. Pass through a fine sieve; allow to set in the fridge for at least 2 hours and cut into small squares. To serve: Using a hot spoon, place a spoonful of chocolate cremoso in the middle of 4 plates. Sprinkle with a little flor de sal. Place a couple of basil jelly squares around the chocolate with a few basil leaves and a sprinkling of pollen. Finish with a little fresh mango & a spoonful of Mango-pollen sorbet. Serve immediately.

TAX & LEGAL MATTERS excluded. The option to adopt this special regime must be directly communicated and filed at the Tax Authorities . Annually the tax regime would be automatically extended except for waiver or exclusion, in which case it imply that its rules will be applicable with respect to transactions undertaken during its validity. Carlos Espinosa Solicitor and Tax Adviser (+34) 627 41 32 01 carlos.espinosa@iurisnautic.com Vat New Ruling: Special Tax Regime Of Cash Basis Till the end of last year when self-employed, or companies raised invoices to their clients they were obliged to declare them and pay them Out-put VAT to the Tax Authorities, no matter if said invoices were effectively paid or not. In order to avoid this situation the recent Ley 14/2013, 27 September, in support of entrepreneurs and their internationalization (herein-

after, the “Entrepreneur Act”) - among other range of reforms on corporate, tax, labour and legal-administrative novelties has introduced the Special Tax regime of cash-basis effective as of 1 January 2014. The main idea is to avoid advancing - and financing – VAT if we are not paid by our clients. In order to opt for this special tax regime you must HAVE turn over lower than € 2,000,000 during the preceding calendar year. Tax payers whose collections in cash, with respect to one same recipient in the course of the calendar year, exceed the quantity determined by VAT Regulations will be

This special tax regime will be applicable to all transactions carried out in the Spanish VAT territory. However, it will not be applicable to other special VAT regimes, exportations and inter-community deliveries of goods (transactions that are exempt under Articles 21, 22, 23 and 24 of the Spanish VAT Act), intra-community acquisitions of goods and those in which the reverse charge rule applies. The main pitfall of this system is that although taxpayers that opt to apply the tax regime may deduct input VAT amounts in accordance with the

general regime for deductions envisaged in the VAT Act, the deduction right will arise only at the moment of the total or partial payment of the price for amounts actually paid, or on 31 December of the year immediately after the one in which the transaction took place, if the price had not been paid. That means that the right to deduct is also delayed. And this does also affect VAT taxpayers that are not under the tax regime, but they are recipients of transactions included in the tax regime as they will be entitled to deduct VAT as of the moment of the total or partial payment of the price for the amounts actually paid, or on 31 December of the year immediately after the one in which the transaction occurred, when such payment has not taken place. Finally, you have to know that depending on your balance OutPut/Input VAT it might be worth or not to opt for this tax regime but this should be proofed case by case.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

C. Nou de Sant Pere 5 Esporles (+34) 971 610 901 C. Monterrey 66, Palma (+34) 971 280 018 Meson la Vila This month’s offering is slightly different, in that it is two restaurants we are recommending. They may have different locations, one in Esporles and one in Palma, but the menu and quality on offer is exactly the same at both venues. The Esporles restaurant has been a favourite haunt with local Mallorquins for many years, and has more recently come on to the radar of the tourist hoardes. Their Palma base is a relatively new operation, just next to the AC Ciutat de Palma Marriot Hotel. Their main menu is very simple; suckling pig or slow roast lamb shoulder! When I saw this menu, I immediately knew that the quality must be top notch, or otherwise they would have gone

out of business in no time! Our first trip was to the Palma restaurant where the lamb is the main feature on the menu. We were not to be disappointed. The meat was probably the best and most tender lamb I have ever tasted. It is slow cooked in a large wood burning oven at relatively low temperatures with a secret blend of spices and really is fantastic. The service too, was impeccable, with very friendly and experienced staff who genuinely wanted you to enjoy the experience. They succeeded on every level. The wine list was heavily biased to the full bodied reds from Spain as you would expect. There were plenty of Rioja’s, Ribera del Duero’s etc, but our choice was a Bierzo, Reserva 2004 which really was to die for! Reasonably priced too! The starters and desserts are a nice mix of regular dishes, which are fine, but these restaurants are all about the main dishes. The Esporles restaurant seems to specialise more in the suckling pig, with the lamb

playing second fiddle, but on our recent visit for Sunday lunch they had sold out of the pig by the time we were able to be accommodated at 3.30 pm. However I am reliably informed from a trusted source that the suckling pig is, without doubt the best in Mallorca! I would certainly advise booking ahead at Esporles, particularly for Sunday lunch.

Justin Chisholm www.sailracingmagazine.com when I first came here around 10 years ago.

Even before most of us have had a had a chance to break the last of our new year’s resolutions the 2014 regatta circuit is off to a flying start. I’m writing this month’s column from the tip of the Florida Keys in Key West where the tiny island’s legendary Race Week is about to begin. It’s been six years since I last made the trek down US 1 to the Conch Republic but reassuringly very little appears to have changed on the seven and a half square mile isle officially the most southern strip of land in the USA. The island is still sun drenched, the waters are still turquoise and the town is the same freaky mix of cruise ship tourists, crazy street performers and wonderfully weird Key west locals. 129 boats are racing here this week - that’s around 10 per cent down on last year and a far cry from the 300 plus fleet

Nevertheless, even with these reduced numbers, the chance to sail in warm sunshine in January on arguably the most unobstructed racecourse in the world means Key West Race Week remains high on the list of classic regattas and near the top of every competitive sailor’s bucket list. When I took a wander around the marina today to soak up the regatta atmosphere I was struck by how dramatically the entry profile has changed since I was last here. Back then, the 260 boat fleet was dominated by four one design classes with the Farr 40s, Melges 32s, Melges 24s and J105s together accounting for almost exactly half the total entries. Fast forward to 2014 and it is the J70 - a class only launched in 2012 - which makes up 46 per cent of the entry with a 60 boat fleet. Contrastingly, the Farr 40s and J105s are gone entirely and the Melges 24s and 32 can only raise 12 boats between them. While the J70 sailors will most likely have the most fun this week, ripping around in near perfect sportsboat conditions, for me as a spectator, I will be focusing on the the three

mini-maxis and the six TP52s who respectively make up the IRC 1 and 2 fleets. While the numbers in these fleets may be small, the crew lists are studded with the stars of the pro-sailing world, and for me are the stars of the show. Meanwhile, around the globe the professional sailing world is gearing up for 2014 with a flurry of announcements in the first few weeks of the year. Benefitting from the universal assumption that the next America’s Cup will be multihull (latest rumours I hear say 60-foot foiling cats by the way) the now global Extreme Sailing Series has announced several new teams for the 2014 circuit which kicks off in

Singapore in February. At the London Boat Show the ESS organisers officially announced nine teams including three aspiring AC syndicates: Ben Ainslie Racing, Franck Cammas’ Team France and the official challenger of record, Team Australia sailing as GAC Pindar. Those three AC hopefuls join past Cup winners Alinghi on the ESS circuit. Given it’s unlikely there will be an AC45 circuit until 2015 at the earliest, I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa, Artemis Racing or even Oracle Team USA put in an appearance on the Extreme 40 tour this season.
