DEAR ISLANDER Dear Islander, August has provided us with what seems to have been a regatta on virtually every day of the month, kicking off with the Silver Bollard Classic Regatta at Port Adriano at the beginning of the month through to the Panerai Classic Regatta in Mahon to round off the month’s activity. Squeezed in between this was the Copa del Rey, which saw some fabulous racing in champagne conditions on most days, including an appearance from King Felipé on a couple of days of the racing. We have also seen the classics out in force at the Club de Mar regatta as well as in Alcudia where the Trofeo Conde de Barcelona was taking place. This month also sees the Flying 15 European Championships come to Real Club Nautico de Puerto Pollensa, the first major championships to be held in Mallorca since the Worlds in 2007. WE wish all our local boys the best of luck! It has been interesting to see many more of the larger yachts around the islands than normal during August, hopefully a sign that the larger boats are returning to this area as their charter base. The trickledown effect on the local economy of these boats cannot be underestimated, and indeed offer the complete opposite effect to the recent bad publicity the Island has received due to the behaviour of a minority in a tiny area of Mallorca, which the island would be well rid of. A local provisioning company told me recently how 3 yachts spent 42,000 eu between them, and he hadn’t even considered the yacht market as being important! He does now! Add to this the amounts owners, family, guests and crew spend on Transport , Car Hire, Fuel, Hotel Rooms, Restaurants, Bars, Cafes, Supermarkets, and other forms of entertainment, not including the vast amounts spent directly on the yachts and their crew. The nautical sector is a real economic engine here in Palma and other yachting centres and has a direct beneficial effect on every single person living in these areas. This month’s main event of course is The Monaco Yacht Show, which we shall be attending along with many of us who work within the industry. I look forward to seeing many of you during the show, and please don’t be shy in taking us for a glass of Rosé at some point!! Fair Winds! The Islander Nautical Media S.L. The most difficult thing (even if that can be hard enough) isn’t really to find a quiet place during our holidays where to roll out our mat, but to keep that quietness within, in middle of our daily rush. The nature, the peace and calmness on Mallorca, are some out of many of the reasons why we have decided to settle here and are also the reasons why we see this as the ideal environment for our Hikingand Yoga Weekend Holidays. Sometimes we need to get away from our daily routines to be able to appreciate what is there right next to us, and also to find new energy and inspiration.

We believe that we have got a lot to learn. And learning begins here and now. We practice Yoga to learn and to share with others what we experience through our practice. And it is necessary to start within ourselves, to later see a continuous change in our surroundings. First it is important to give us time and space for what we want to do. A shortcut to find out what that is, is to give yourself time for an intense practice, in a peaceful place, where your daily stress doesn’t reach you. Where your common worries and habits don’t draw all your attention. A place where we withdraw from what normally distracts us, to come closer to ourselves. We create a quiet room, to give us the space to listen to our inner voice. To walk in nature helps us a good bit on the way, and once we find and give ourselves those moments and places of tranquillity, it is easier to find back here. The next time you are stuck in the metro or in a difficult situation, you will find

MALLORCA NEWS then climbing all the way back down again. This technique is not quite as cool and will drain you of all your strength twice as quick.

Sam Shelley (+34) 664 734 512 samshelley@hotmail.com www.rockandride-mallorca.com Rock Climbing: Deep Water Soloing in Mallorca Mallorca is the world Mecca for this relatively new sport of deep water soloing (known locally as Psicobloc). It is all about fun in the sun and is what all of the cool kids will be up to this summer. In short it is basically

6

climbing above the sea without ropes and all the usual climbing safety equipment! In fact the proper way to take part is to climb the route straight from the sea and fall back into the sea either on reaching the top or by accident is you run out of steam half way up. This is the way all the visiting rock gods and goddesses from around the world will be playing the deep water soloing game. However, you are more likely to catch me climbing as far as possible and

Deep water soloing is incredibly tempting for people fresh into rock climbing. It is the ultimate way to hang out on a beach looking very cool and it involves hardly any equipment or knowledge of knots (like I said before there are no ropes). All you need is beach wear and a pair of rock shoes!). However, I must stress at this point there is much more to this sport than meets the eye if you want to avoid serious injuries. It is worth noting that the sport was developed by the best climbers from around the world. Chris Sharma aka Rock God is a regular visitor to the island and a large percentage of the routes in the guidebook are aimed at Chris and his like. In fact it is very hard to find suitable climbs for mere

mortals like myself. For a start, cliffs overhanging the sea are always going to be undercut so there is always going to be the problem of getting to the bottom of routes. You have to be a fairly good climber even to get started on many of the routes. As a rule of thumb deep water soloing is going to suit people climbing grade 5+ and upwards with the emphasis being on the upwards! Secondly, the important thing is having a safe fall. A safe fall means an uninterrupted fall in to deep water. The steeper routes normally have the safest falls. Which means there is more route choice if you like steep climbing. Overhanging routes are where you want to be in terms of safety so it is important to be feeling strong. Of course if you have a whole summer to hang out then it is the perfect way to get strong

MALLORCA NEWS but if you are only here for a few days it is important to choose your routes carefully to avoid injury or burn out. Also it takes a while to feel comfortable with the falls. I always find at the start of the season I am scared falling from even the shortest routes (5m) and I don´t think I will ever feel comfortable falling from the longest routes (20m!) Where to go: Most of the developed deep water soloing areas are over on the East of the Island. For information on these areas you can´t beat the new Rockfax guide “Mallorca: Sports Climbing and deep water soloing” It has 63 pages devoted solely to DWS. It also offers safety grades alongside the technical grades….very important information! These areas in the guidebook offer very little for the people climbing less that 6a. We have made it our mission to find other deep water soloing

areas on the island where we can offer a safe and enjoyable introduction to the sport. What you need: A pair of rock shoes that will get repeatedly wet. After the first splash down you spend the rest of the day climbing in wet shoes. You get used to it! Also you need to find a solution to the wet chalk bag problem. I take liquid chalk which I leave on a convenient ledge. It tends to stay applied for the duration of the route. Or you´ll need a water proof liner to put in your existing chalk bag, a zip lock bag should do it. Lots of sun tan lotion and a good friend to keep topped up. If you haven´t got a good friend you´ll soon find one. This is the joy of DWS, you can head to the popular spots alone and find buddies along the way. Never solo alone! Bad things can happen at the sea side and when it does you´ll need a friend with you.

Safety: The biggest safety tip is to get into this sport slowly. As the Mallorcans would say “poc a poc”. The golden rules for deep water soloing are: 1. You need to be a strong swimmer 2. Never solo alone! 3. Don´t climb in rough seas. 4. Know your exit points from the sea and make sure you can still manage these exits when fatigued. Take a short piece if rope to assist you exist from the water, used for climbing hand over hand where there is not an easy alternative. 5. Be totally aware of what falls will entail. 6. Build up slowly so that you can learn the best ways to fall into the water. There are lots of techniques for keeping your body vertical for entering the water, all take practice.

MALLORCA NEWS

Advertorial Deep Blue Training They’re promising to turn the Meds maritime training industry on its head, and that’s a big claim from a new entrant that only opened its doors earlier this summer. But according to Tony Stanton and Steve Brand, owners of Palma’s newest RYA and MCA sea school Deep Blue Sea Training, their mix of friendly service, impartial advice, topend equipment and the latest training methods, all combined with 25 years of teaching experience and an aggressive pricing strategy adds up to a winning combination. So much so that they’re holding courses 7 days a week to keep up with demand. I went to find out more, to meet a few of their customers, and to see if the reality lives up to the headlines.

My first impression on meeting Steve Brand and Tony Stanton, owners and chief instructors at this new school, was how unassuming they are. I was expecting a hard sell, a sort of Wolf of Wall Street meets the dock walk. But nothing could be further from the truth. These guys are committed to their business and it’s clear they’ve already put their money where their mouths are as the office has two shiny new classrooms, one of which is full of very expensive looking computer simulators. But my first impressions are two down to earth blokes who clearly know a lot about yachting, appear to have a real passion for teaching, and are enthusiastically showing me around their business like two excited school boys showing off their football card collections. “We both worked freelance at

another school on the island, Steve was chief instructor and I was doing a lot of powerboat and Yachtmaster training, and we kept seeing things that we thought could be improved” ” says Tony Stanton, the younger of the two men, and as Steve Brand tells me, the business brain behind the venture. “Big and small things that could make a real difference to the learning experience for the students, but we could not get it through to the owner that it was worth investing to make the difference. We were disappointed by the attitude and approach, especially as the prices that were being charged were pretty staggering. So we decided that we would do things better and cheaper” Stanton is smiling and relaxed, but with the focus of an evangelist who’s seen the light and wants to spread the word. “We knew we could offer better training, with more added extras, and a much lower cost by investing in all the things we needed up front. We knew that if we could control our own costs, then we could pass the savings on to our customers and still afford to add lots of touches that make a real difference”. Brand is quick to join in, and tells me how a big part of their ethic is having the best materials, assets and equipment to hand on day one, a large investment at the outset, but one that appears to already be paying dividends. “Lots of schools hire in boats and instructors when they need them, they don’t seem to invest much in their businesses and as a result give what we think is a decent albeit pretty bare bones service. But here in Mallorca it’s been anything but a bare bones price” Brand speaks with the authority of a man who knows what he’s talking about. I later find out that he has spent 25 years as a Yachtmaster instructor and examiner, and he reckons there are at least 1000 RYA Yachtmasters working today in the Med alone that he has personally taught or examined. As part of their plan they

invested heavily at the outset firstly in their own sailing and motor yachts, they purpose built their classrooms to maximize natural light, added air conditioning and ergonomic furniture and invested in an impressive suite of advanced hi-tech full mission bridge simulators. They didn’t stop there. They have a VHF suite of the latest radio sets from Icom and Standard Horizon, and a suite of Transas GMDSS touch screen simulators for teaching the GOC (general operators certificate) course for the MCA. A conservative estimate of their investment so far is over €400,000, and a quick look at the wall full of certificates says that these guys must be amongst the most qualified instructors around. But whilst I begin understand the commercial rationale, I’m keen to find out what this all means for their customers and so they open their database and tell me I can pick any names and as many as I want from their list of recent students. They claim a 100% satisfaction rating in their post-course feedback, and they show me the growing pile of feedback forms that, as promised, are full of glowing praise and littered with 5 out of 5’s. The words ‘excellent’, ‘highly recommend’ and ‘fun’ are recurring themes in the feedback they collect. Over the next few days I call several of their recent students that I picked randomly from their records, and the feedback is the same. There is nothing but high praise from some very satisfied customers who all want to tell me how much they rate this new school and these two likeable and clearly very knowledgeable guys. Its early days for Stanton and Brand, but their advertised promise to be better, faster and cheaper seems, at least for the customers I spoke to, to be very real indeed. We’ve already ruffled a few feathers with our strategy of UK prices in the Med. Our competitors have speculated, ruminated and downright lied about why our prices are so much cheaper than theirs. So here’s the truth. We bought all our own training kit, we don’t freelance out training to hired guns, and we control our costs extremely well. Then we pass every single penny of savings onto our customers in the form of unbeatable pricing for all of our courses. You won’t find better, you probably won’t find faster, and with professional courses starting at only €49, you definitely won’t find cheaper.

Branagh Marine Composites are delighted to have their three Mini Maxi Clients in the top three positions at the Copa del Rey 2014.

In the run up for the regatta, BMC were commissioned to undertake a weight reduction project on S/Y Robertissima, removing original structures and replacing them with new, lighter weight ones.

Last month saw the Kings Cup take place here in Palma. The battle of the titans was on between the mini maxis as they thrashed it out on the water. Spokesperson for the Copa del Rey says: ‘The fight for the title in the class Gaastra IRC 0 was fierce throughout the week. Four out of the five Mini Maxi boats won at least one of the 11 races held, and the top three teams faced the last day separated by only three points. The “Around Mallorca Swim Challenge” - Richard Krugel This month sees a unique event taking place here in Mallorca, when 37 year old Richard Krugel from South Africa attempts to swim around the Island over a period of 3 weeks and in the process is hoping to raise lots of money for the Allen Graham Kids Charity. The Islander asked Richard to tell us his story on why he has chosen to take on this epic challenge. My story... My name is Richard Krugel, I am 37 years old. Like many foreign youngsters, I have worked in the Superyacht industry in Mallorca although this was more than 10 years ago. I now live in Cape Town, South Africa. I left Mallorca all those years back because of an unfortunate event that took the life of my only younger brother in

South Africa. I was told the devastating news on my way back from work and since I could not get a flight out of Mallorca the very same day, my friends took me to a quiet beach in Mallorca to try and help console me . For some reason I went swimming in the ocean that day and I suddenly had the idea that I would come back one day and Swim around the island of Mallorca in remembrance of my brother. This was how the idea was born, and now 11 years on I hope to be able to complete my mission. Swimming history... I started swimming at the age of 5. During my school years I competed on national and international level in South Africa. After school I joined the South African Navy where I qualified as a special operations Navy diver. I left the navy to travel and this is how I ended up in Mallorca. While living in Cape Town I regularly compete in Open Water Swimming and what is called Extreme Swimming. The Atlantic ocean in Cape Town is very cold with an average temperature between 11-15 degrees Celcius. I have swum the Robben Island Open Water event (http://www. freedomswimseries.co.za/) which is considered one of the toughest open water swims in the world, as no wetsuits are allowed. I have also swum the Speedo Ice

Swim event in the coldest water in Africa with a temperature below 5 degrees celcius. For this swim around Mallorca, I had to train in water warmer than these events, as the water in Mallorca is thankfully warmer than ours here in Cape Town. Preparation... I currently swim 6 days a week averaging between 35 -50 km per week using carefully planned swimming programmes. I enlisted the help of a seasoned Open Water Swimming coach who has helped many South African swimmers to complete swims like the English Channel, Beiring Strait etc. Since my challenge is unique, in the sense that it has never been done before, there remains many unknowns as to how my body will react to swimming long distances on a daily basis for an extended period of time. The Plan... I plan to start swimming around the 15th or 20th September 2014, in an anti-clockwise direction, starting from the main marina in Palma de Mallorca. These dates were chosen so that I hopefully encounter the best sea conditions of the year i.e. calm and flat. The entire distance of the swim is about 360km. This is of course impossible to complete in one go. Therefore I will be attempting what is

called a “Stage swim”. I am in talks with the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) to have this swim of mine sanctioned and therefore recognised as an official attempt. The “stages” will comprise of two swims per day, called “Legs”. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each “Leg” is planned to be roughly 10km each. Therefore around 20 km per day. This is of course weather dependant. I will be beaching between each leg on various beaches on Mallorca. WOWSA and the Spanish Maritime Authorities require that I have a boat accompany me all the way, for visibility to other vessels and my own safety. I will have a land based crew that will follow me by car to all the beaches I will be swimming to. At no time am I allowed to be assisted by the boat and I am only allowed to swim in a speedo, goggles and cap. If all goes well, I should be finishing in around 18/21 days from the start. Charity… I have involved a local Mallorcan charity called the Allen Graham Charity for kids, who I hope can benefit from my efforts. www.agrahamcharity.org I am proud to have them on board and offer the chance to use my swim as a fund raising project that will benefit their organisation.

Max-Prop is the leading low drag propeller on the market today. Since starting production in the 1970’s Max-Prop has proven itself on racing and cruising boats around the world. With over 35,000 propellers in the water, the Max-Prop is tested daily in the harshest conditions and has established itself as the most efficient and reliable low drag propeller. Max-Prop Products Now Available from Palmawatch Mallorca based yacht service provider Palmawatch is strengthening its product offer on underwater applications. Already offering innovative solutions for below the water line such as the silicone based Propspeed antifouling , Sea Vision underwater lights, PSS shaft seals and the well known Spurs rope cutter, the company have gone one step further and signed an agreement to distribute the Max-Prop propellor range in the Balearics. Prioritising on providing underwater solutions is a natural step for Palmawatch, whose quality controlled antifouling service has become a mainstay of the various haul out works they undertake from their comprehensive workshop premises, situated right inside Palma’s STP repair and refit shipyard.

Max-Prop uses a “differential” type design so all blades open in unison in forward or reverse. From the traditional two and three blade props through to the latest ruggedly designed four and five blade models, the Max-Prop range offers a wide choice for cruising sailing yacht owners. For instance the five blade ‘Whisper’ adjustable pitch model offers noticeable advantages when powering against heavy wind and seas. The extra thrust and quiet performance of a five blade propeller design makes it ideal for large vessels with heavy displacement. Now the full Max-Prop range is available in the Balearic Islands from Palmawatch who will provide technical advice, installation and service for the propellors, as part of their total underwater solutions package. pierre@palmawatch.com Tel: (+34) 627 451 358 www.palmawatch.com

MARINE INDUSTRY NEWS New Show for Genoa The board of directors of UCINA (Unione Nazionale dei Cantieri e delle Industrie Nautiche e Affini) recently approved a new edition of the Genoa International Boat Show for early May next year. The new event will not replace the existing October show, according to UCINA officials.

The new show, which will start two or three days after Expo Milano begins May 1, will have three areas: a traditional boat show, a charter yacht show at the newly designed Marina Porto Antico, and a brokerage yacht show at the marina near the airport. Expo Milano will offer the best of Italian culture and design, while Genoa will provide access to the yachting lifestyle. Organisers also recognised that there were too many boat shows in the autumn, and want Genoa to become known as the Mediterranean’s international boat show in the spring. “As a show, Genoa has suffered more than Cannes or Monaco, because the Italian economy has suffered more than the other countries,” says Perotti. UCINA President, “That has directly impacted our shipyards and their ability to attend the show.” Perotti is hopeful that the wider format, with an emphasis on Italian culture and the yachting lifestyle, could change the direction of boat shows in general. He believes that it could appeal to potential buyers outside the boating community. Despite the ambitious plans for the new event, UCINA has no plans to drop the traditional October event. The trade association has been

proceeding full-speed ahead with the show, which runs from October 1-6. Organisers say the exhibit space is 90% full, with some exhibitors like Cranchi, which had pulled out of the event last year, returning, and others, like Grupo Ferretti, taking more exhibit space. UCINA cut space costs by 20% as incentives for shipyards to take part in the show. But the show was dealt a blow last week when Azimut/Benetti announced it was not attending for “commercial” reasons. To bolster the new image, UCINA plans to fly 50 journalists from around the world to see the new format of the show. The trade association also plans to invite about 60 technical personnel from non-Italian shipyards to attend. “The idea is for them to see our boats in the water and make connections with Italian equipment manufacturers to increase our export market for equipment,” says Perotti. UCINA also hopes the show will become a magnet for nonItalian shipyards. Sunseeker and Frauscher Shipyards will be exhibiting at the show, and UCINA says it will try to attract other non-Italian shipyards. Perotti notes the show has 10% more exhibitors than last year. ”We’re expecting about 5.5% growth for total industry sales this year compared to 2013,” says Perotti. “After five years of negative numbers, this will be a significant turnaround for our industry. We think we will see a solid turnaround by May 2015. We also think the May event could be a turnaround for the Genoa show.”

Fraser has Bumper Summer Fraser Yachts, which according to superyacht industry statistics continues as the leading brokerage company, has shown its strength with the sale of five superyachts in 10 days. Of more significance is the fact that its run of sales was achieved in the summer, which is traditionally a quieter period for sales. The burst of activity at this time of year may also indicate a strengthening of the market. Frasers’ global marketing manager, Lisa Peck, told IBI: “We have actually done some analysis of sales between the first six months of each year.” The number of sales in the first six months for 2014 compared with 2013 is as follows: 2013 = 170 2014 = 220 In terms superyacht size ranges, Peck commented: “All of the size ranges have had higher yacht sales, except for the 70m-plus (230ft-plus) where it was three yachts for each year. Most categories have increased by 20-30%, in line with the overall increase in the total yachts sold (29%). However, the larger end (50m-plus) has seen a much higher increase, of 75% in the 50m-60m category and 80% in the 60m-70m category, but of course we are dealing in much smaller numbers overall. “In terms of the markets

where they were sold,” she commented, “I’m afraid this is not tracked publicly so I can only tell you from our experience, which is that both years seem to be fairly evenly spread between both Europe and America. Since 2013 we have noted that the American market has been recovering well. This is particularly shown in the latter half of 2013, which we’re not currently comparing.” The five yachts sold by Fraser were the 26m (85ft) Elena B from Cantieri del Pisa; the 35m (115ft) Benetti Paradigm sold through San Diego; a 38m (125ft) Sunseeker sold through Monaco, a 49m (144ft) new build from Crescent Yachts in Canada and the 59m (194ft) classic motoryacht Capella C, also sold through Monaco. “This is clearly excellent news, not just for us but for the industry as a whole,” said Fabio Ermetto, chairman of Fraser Yachts. “There are a number of economic concerns at the moment but our brokers are continuing to work hard and close deals. What is especially important for us is that these sales are taking place all over the world and for all different types and sizes of yachts.”

Russian Boat and Yacht Production on Verge of Crisis By Eugene Gerden Russian boat and yacht production is on the verge of crisis following news that the Russian government is considering a ban on imported engines and other yacht components in response to sanctions imposed on Russia by Western countries. The government is currently drawing up a list of foreign onboard equipment imported from EU countries, the US and Canada, that may be restricted. Yesterday, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that following the ban on imported agricultural products from Western countries, Russia is “potentially ready to introduce protective measures” in the national shipbuilding industry, including yachtbuilding. “It should be done sensibly,” he said, because the government “understands the importance of cooperation in this area and adequately evaluates its own capabilities.”

In the meantime, such plans have already been criticised by some of Russia’s largest yachtbuilders, as they are heavily dependent on the supply of components and onboard equipment from abroad. Sanctions may affect leading Russian yacht manufacturers, including the JSC Moscow Shipbuilding & Ship Repair facility and others. The Russian government has also not ruled out the possibility of increasing customs duties on the import of new and used yachts into Russia. The latest measure would likely contribute to an increase in yacht purchases made by rich Russians abroad. Finally, there is also the possibility of complicating procedures for foreign yachts entering Russian territorial waters, which has sparked strong criticism from the Russian Yachting Association. According to an official representative of the group, the approval of such a decision is unacceptable and would lead to a drop in popularity of Russian yachting among foreign tourists, contributing to major losses in the sector.

The range of possible measures is very wide, from increasing tariffs on imported parts for the Russian yacht-building industry to a ban on the purchase of foreign yachts and boats for state needs.

MARINE INDUSTRY NEWS closely related to a national and international economic recovery with resulting benefits to the nautical sector. We have to keep in mind also that the growth we are witnessing is partially due to the different legal and administrative changes we have achieved, thanks to a great effort by ANEN.

Letter from the President August 2014 This summer we have good reasons to be optimistic about the future of our sector. Last month we received the news that Balearic Islands continues to be at the top of the national ranking of boat registrations. On top of that, the charter companies are getting busier despite being disadvantaged compared to the mainland, due to bureaucratic obstacles. Also recently the final text of the Law of the Maritime Navigation was approved in the Congress. Furthermore, AENIB proposed in a recent meeting of the Organizing Committee of the Palma Boat Show to create an area in the show dedicated to the nautical tradition of our islands, a legacy that deserves all our possible support. During the first half of the year, 367 recreational vessels have been registered on our islands, 87 more than in the same period last year. In percentages, this means an increase by 31% in year on year numbers. The Balearic Islands continues to be the region with most registrations, ahead of Barcelona and Cádiz. This is a tendency that will carry on in the future, as it is

24

An increase of recreational nautical charter has been registered on our islands, although Alicante is the region where the largest number of charter yachts have been registered. That is no coincidence at all. Our islands are disadvantaged in a sense that companies that are dedicated to charter have to apply for a license to be able to carry out the activity. The license procedure has a cost which means that our companies are not competitive compared to the companies from the mainland. The vessels are registered in Alicante, a port closest to our islands, and afterwards used here by the clients. We believe our region would benefit if this license was eliminated, and the income would stay with our companies rather than elsewhere in Spain. The law that will eventually become one of our main tools to drive the fiscal and administrative modernization of the recreational nautical sector – the Law of Maritime Navigation – was finally approved a few weeks ago. The law recognizes for the first time in history our sector as legally independent from the Merchant Marine. This is a success that has required an enormous effort (both human and economic) by all of us who are part of ANEN. But we can´t relax just yet though, there is

still a lot to do to achieve fiscal and legal harmonization with the rest of Europe. With this in mind, we continue to fight to get rid of the Matriculation Tax for all the vessels, as we consider it counterproductive. Referring to the matriculation tax, a reply from the Directorate General of Taxation to a binding consultation prepared by ANEN in collaboration with Miguel Angel from Garrigues Lawyers deserves a special mention. This reply clarifies a series of questions that were not clearly defined in the legislation. A few days ago we participated in another meeting of the Organizing Committee of the Palma Boat Show. In the meeting we insisted again how important it would be to dedicate a specific space in the show for the nautical tradition on our islands. This proposal figured already in the project we presented two years ago and we believe not another year should pass without realizing this plan. At AENIB we believe that the nautical sector of our islands should show solidarity towards our artisans, who in these difficult times surely cannot access the show under the same conditions as we do. We should not forget either that the show is not a business as such, but a platform and the benefits it generates should be reinvested in improving it. It would be a great improvement to give an opportunity for the traditional nautical craftsmen to showcase their work among the visitors of the show. Our region has always been closely involved with the sea, as is fitting for an archipelago. The consecutive economic crisis´, the surge of new materials and the technological progress are endangering our old professions like for example the “mestres d´aixa”. We will continue working on this proposal so that hopefully next year we can enjoy in one space all the nautical wealth of our islands, from llaüts to superyachts.

Nautitech Catamarans has Finalised Negotiations for the French Catamaran Manufacturer to be Acquired by the Giebelstadt-based Company Bavaria Yachtbau and Nautitech Catamarans have finalised negotiations for the French catamaran manufacturer to be acquired by the Giebelstadtbased company. With this move, Bavaria – the second largest manufacturer of sailing and motor yachts in the world – expands its product portfolio of monohull yachts to include the rapidly growing market for catamarans and continues along its targeted course of opening up new markets. “The market for cruising catamarans is a fast-growing segment, not only for private owners but even more so for the charter market. Bavaria has always had been very well positioned in both markets. With Nautitech Catamarans and its experienced team, led by founder Bruno Voisard, we have found the right partner to gain access to the catamaran market,” said Constantin von Bülow, CEO of Bavaria Yachts. Nautitech, founded by Bruno Voisard, has been manufacturing 40-60ft catamarans at its Rochefort site on the French Atlantic coast since 2004. Its latest model is a 40ft cat, developed in collaboration with serial production specialist Marc Lombard. There are five other models in the current Nautitech range. “Bavaria is the ideal partner for Nautitech Catamarans. As a building block, our catamarans are an optimum addition to the Bavaria Yachts product portfolio. Nautitech has experienced rapid growth over the past years and we look forward to continuing along this course with Bavaria,” explains Bruno Voisard. The boatbuilders will be exhibiting together for the first time in Cannes from 9 - 14 September.

Southerly Yachts Could be Heading for Liquidation UK-based Southerly Yachts looks as though it could be heading for liquidation. Letters have been mailed to creditors calling for a meeting to be held at Gatwick on August 22.

responded to IBI’s requests for information. When Yachting Monthly called them, someone working for Northshore Shipyard answered the phone and said Northshore would still be “offering repair and service to the existing fleet.”

One angry industry chief who is trying to call in debts told IBI’s sister publication Yachting Monthly: “They appear to be just a shell with no assets. It’s grim news.”

Previously trading as Northshore Yachts, Southerly went into administration in April last year after what it described as a “dramatic decline in orders for delivery in 2013 and early 2014.”

Around 50 jobs are at stake and it is believed FRP Advisory, a company that helps potential businessmen purchase failing businesses, is acting as a consultancy to Southerly Yachts. But nobody at Southerly or FRP

The business then re-emerged under a different corporate structure in the name of Southerly Yachts Ltd, with two out of the three same directors in charge. Many staff were laid off and re-hired as skilled labour.

New Zealand First Team to Announce America’s Cup Entry As the holder of the America’s Cup, Golden Gate Yacht Club and their defence team Oracle Team USA have been exceedingly quiet about who has submitted entry into the 35th America’s Cup. Unlike the previous edition, where every team to express interest was cause for a public celebration, there is now a significantly more cautious approach. With an entry deadline of August 8 (by midnight PT), the only news from the defender came last week when they said that four teams had entered or plan to by the entry: Luna Rossa (ITA), Artemis Racing (SWE), Team France (FRA) and Ben Ainslie Racing (GBR) However, the first club to say they had in fact lodged a challenge is the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron on behalf of their squad, Emirates Team New Zealand.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has been involved with all but one New Zealand America’s Cup campaign since 1987, winning at San Diego in 1995 and successfully defending at Auckland in 2000. “New Zealand has a distinguished history in the America’s Cup and we expect Emirates Team New Zealand will once again make New Zealand proud, just as it has done many times in the past,” stated outgoing Commodore Steve Burrett. “We wish the team well and we look forward to contributing to the success of the 35th America’s Cup.” Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton says the team is pleased to be able to be in a position to challenge with the confidence of being able to represent the country well. “This is the official start of a long, hard journey. We do not under-estimate the challenges ahead. We look forward to working with the other teams to create a great event.”

Mallorca’s Puerto Portals to Host the 2015 TP52 World Championship Mallorca’s prestigious Puerto Portals will host the 2015 TP52 World Championship in July next year, returning to a venue which harbours very many happy memories for the class. The excellent facilities, very desirable location, reliable sea breezes and ease of travel access are just some of the key reasons that the TP52 class have chosen Puerto Portals. The TP52 World Championship will once again be a constituent regatta of the 52 SUPER SERIES in 2015 and with eight new TP52s already confirmed to be building for next season, the World Championship title will be one of the hardest fought ever in 2015 as the fleet enjoys significant growth. The exact size of the fleet for 2015 is still not known but the current expectation is for at least 12 boats representing 12 different nations.

The 2012 edition year saw over 80 entries from all over the world, including the current SwanLine- from the Swan 53 to the highly competitive Swan 60 thorough to the sleek Swan 80as well as many of the models from the Nautor’s Swan archives with a class likely dedicated to the classic Sparkman and Stephens designed models.

“We are very excited to be going to Puerto Portals for the TP52 World Championships in 2015. We are pleased to see not only that the fleet is growing but it is becoming increasingly international. That was one of the goals we set as the world’s leading monohull circuit.” Says Agustin Zulueta the CEO of the 52 SUPER SERIES.

Corinna Graf, CEO of Puerto Portals confirms that they had been looking to return to hosting top level international racing but they have been waiting the right opportunity. “We were seeking an event which brings real prestige, a race which is of public relevance and a true top level sporting test. Being hosts of a stage of the 52 SUPER SERIES will bring great pride to the port. And crowning a new world champion in 2015 will add a new level of prestige.” Rob Weiland, manager of the TP52 class, also is pleased to bring the World Championship to Puerto Portals World: “It’s a beautiful place to sail. I was here for the first time in 2005 for the Breitling Cup and have always loved the infrastructure and the ambience. Conditions will be excellent for racing and there are many good restaurants very close to the dock. I am convinced that the World Championship in Puerto Portals is going to be a great success.“ Puerto Portals has a long and storied relationship with the Class since it was adopted in the Med in 2005. From 2005 to 2008 the venue was a regular fixture on the MedCup circuit, usually with a royal presence and unique ambience.

REGATTA NEWS Will Virtual Technology Win The Next America’s Cup? While the sense of wind and spray on a sailboat can never be replaced, VIRTAC hopes their Virtual Reality technology will provide sailors with the ability to simulate sailing. Perhaps a handy tool during cold winter seasons, VIRTAC is betting their tools will be a valuable training asset for the next America’s Cup. As the Protocol for the 2017 event seeks to reduce costs by limiting actual sailing time, virtual sailing might be the best alternative. Here they report on some of the issues the teams will be working on… One of the most useful aspects of the VIRTAC simulator will be the capability for sailors to learn and practice the optimal strategies for foiling, both upwind and down. These are not as simple as they might first appear, particularly the upwind case. During the 34th America’s Cup, held in San Francisco last year, the ability of the Oracle team to foil their AC72 upwind at key points in the later races proved to be an invaluable asset and a significant factor in their victory. Since then, the AC62 class has been defined as a successor to the AC72, with foiling upwind in as little as 12 knots of wind mentioned as an objective. Whether this design goal is achievable and whether it will translate into consistent upwind foiling is another matter. America’s Cup designers such as Pete Melvin and Paul Bieker have talked about making the AC62 foil in lower winds than was feasible with the AC72. However, when the dimensions for the AC62 are compared with

32

a scaled down AC72, the boat is heavier relative to its righting moment and sail area. This does not indicate a boat that will be more likely to foil in light winds than the AC72. It is possible that the teams may reduce aerodynamic drag on their AC62s even more than was achieved by the Oracle team with their Cup-winning boat, but paradoxically, this may not make upwind foiling more advantageous, as it would improve the lift/drag ratio of the boat and make the high, non-foiling mode even more efficient. Unlike the AC72, the AC62 allows dynamic control of rudder foil angle of attack. As a result, it may be possible to improve the efficiency of the main foils of the AC62 as they will not need to be as selfregulating in the heave axis. This may deliver some gains in the upwind foiling mode, as sideforce can be generated more effectively when flying height can be precisely controlled. But how much more efficient upwind foiling will become is unclear, and whether upwind foiling mode can improve on the VMG available in the highpointing displacement mode is also uncertain. Some America’s Cup designers now believe that hulls are simply “foil delivery systems” and that hull design is no longer important, but this may be a naive view. It is a safe bet that the AC62s will be able to foil upwind in most conditions, but it is far from guaranteed that they will do so the majority of the time while racing.

classification, it finished as follows:

By mid-morning on the final day of the regatta, 2nd August, Port Adriano was cloudy and overcast with a haze, a ground swell of 2 metres and very little breeze. On each day of the event, the fleet took to the sea at 12.0, making their way to the starting line, but, unfortunately, they returned to port without being able to start a race.

1st Place: Margarita Estalindalamar –owned by Anton Flat with 3 points

The persistent swell from the South combined with soft and shifting southerly winds veering westwards, , but which fell below 5 knots- forced the Race Committee, led by Officer Ariane Mainemarer, to abandon the race as the prevailing sea conditions and winds were not appropriate for these kind of boats. The Final results were: 1st Place: Enterprise owned by Albert Kusak 2 points 2nd Place: Manitou- owner Philip Jordan with 4 points 3rd Place: Bluepeter – owned by The Blue Peter Ltd with 6 points 4th Place- Marigan- owned byTim Liesenhoff with 8 points With regards to the general IRC

2nd Place: Fatima owned by Diego Caro with 3 points 3rd Place: Pas Encore owned by Eduard Sauces with 7 points 4th Place: Tichiy Don owned by Eugeny Panevin with 8 points Therefore, it has been proclaimed that the overall winner of the second edition of the Classic Regatta Silver Bollard is “The Enterprise”. At 20.30, Port Adriano´s “Crew Bar” played host to the Closing ceremony of the Regata, with a brilliant presentation of trophies to the participants and winners. With careful preparation by the Crew Bar- one of the main sponsors and contributors to this edition of the Classic II Silver Bollard, this regatta is now an established event in the classic boat category, and careful organization and staging by the PR team of Port Adriano, ensured that invited guests were able to enjoy a pleasant and entertaining evening to terminate this event which has been very highly rated and well received by all participants.

REGATTA NEWS – and back! Unfortunately only Dragonfly was able to participate and enjoy the warm ENE breeze. There was only one mark to be rounded, in the bay of Alcudia next to the lighthouse of Aucanada. Then a long trek back to Pollensa. Added excitement during the race was provided by a sinking motor boat which needed to be rescued outside Cabo Pinar. More information at: http://flyingfifteen.mallorcaservice.de Come Fly with Us! ScandiCup, July 20 – Pollensa Thanks to Scott and Andrew, who replaced our old regatta “Trofeo Sponsor” by ScandiCup (Scott and Andy Cup)!! Scott and Andrew invented new rules and a complete new social program. The briefing at 13:00 started well with coffee and sandwiches. On the race course we had to leave the marks to starboard and sailed only triangles. But the best of their organization was the wind. Heavily shifting winds between Force 3 & 5 and finally a few gusts of 7 made this race very exciting. Steve summarised this regatta as the best sailing for years. For the break after the second race the sponsors had given a crate of beer to Diego on the committee boat, who distributed these aerially over to the passing boats. Finally Michael C. and Viviana in Speedy Gonzales put all their sailing experience together and

won this regatta with 2 first and a second place. Second came the sponsors Scott and Andrew who enjoyed their new job, when they handed over a good bottle of cava to each of the winning crew Scott and Andrew promised to repeat this regatta next year with more and even better ideas including the perfect winds.
Thank you very much Andrew and Scott!! Tremendous fun! Also many thanks to Diego and his “ayudante” who again did a great job.

Saturday is a long distance race from Pollensa to Alcudia

Sunday – like Saturday – brought good and reliable easterly wind, and this time a costal race inside the bay of Pollensa had been set up. The conditions tempted David Miles and Philip Parry to turn out in Stromtrooper 3 and so we had a great competition over the 15 mile course. The overall winner – a cruiser – won his own weight in beer. Michael Clough Trophy, August 16-17 – Pollensa & Alcudia This trophy is traditionally spread across a series in Pollensa bay on the Saturday, and the “feeder” race to Alcudia for the Conde de Barcelona race the following week. On Saturday, we sailed a series of windward leeward races, set on a short course to allow for more action, Except for the first and fourth races all were only one lap, so there was emphasis on good starting and getting into clear air. Banning spinnakers also placed more emphasis on boat handling and coordination. Further fun was added by a windshift which turned the beat into a run and vice versa. This allowed for both

windward and leeward starts – and finishes! – making for a great day. Greg Clough had turned out to drive for his father, and took a couple of races to get up to speed. David Miles took full advantage of this, with a crew of his two grandchildren, and with 1,2,2 was winning the series at the end of race 3. However, he retired from race 4 and didn’t compete the rest for the day, leaving a clear field for Greg and the others. Having won race3, Greg also took 5 & 6, to lead at the end of day 1. Scott and Andy took races 2 & 4 to grab second. Michael and Steve had 2 second and 2 third for third overall. Saturday results: 1 3804 Speedy Gonzales (Greg Clough & Michael Clough) 2 3763 ffiel good (Scott Walker & Andrew Harvey) 3 3600 Dragonfly (Michael Beecken & Stephen Parry) The Sunday race to Alcudia counted double points, so there was still a lot to go for. It being Michael’s race (originated to celebrate his birthday, which this year also fell on the Sunday) he sets the course, and added an extra mark of the course – leaving Formentor Island to starboard on the way out. Initially we planned a gate start, with Michael & Greg as the rabbit. But just in time, Diego turned up and gave us a line start. fuego fatuo decided that this was a great opportunity to do a port tack start - having not done

one yet this year. Positioning was perfect, but timing not – arriving half a minute late at the pin end. Nevertheless, some of the fleet decided this was a good idea, and tacked out towards the far shore, whilst the rest headed towards the seaplane base. A few minutes later, Dragonfly decided to go inshore too, possibly encouraged by not wanting to pick up the port tack starter’s dirty air. The offshore line seemed to pay, as the boats there arrived at the island first. Setting this as a mark also helped to reunite the fleet, led by Spanish Fly and fuego fatuo. The beat up the narrow channel was further excited by a motor boat which elected to anchor right in the middle of the shallowest and narrowest bit! The two leaders were out of the top end together, with fuego fatuo electing to go further up the Pollensa shore, whilst Spanish Fly set off for Punta Sabater, followed by Speedy Gonzales and Dragonfly. Ffiel good and Heaven Sent felt the Pollensa side was better, and continued up that shore. Spotting boats near Punta Negra, fuego fatuo misjudged the timing and made the break for Punta Sabater, allowing Speedy Gonzales and Dragonfly to arrive ahead. After arriving at the Cap, Spanish Fly returned to Pollensa.

Sunday results: 1 3804 Speedy Gonzales (Greg Clough & Michael Clough) 2 3600 Dragonfly (Michael Beecken & Stephen Parry) 3 3577 fuego fatuo (Stephen Babbage & Francisco Gadala-Maria) So the series was taken by Speedy Gonzales, driven by Greg Clough and crewed by Michael – a fitting end to a fine weekend’s sailing! Overall results: 1 3804 Speedy Gonzales (Greg Clough & Michael Clough) 2 3763 ffiel good (Scott Walker & Andrew Harvey) 3 3600 Dragonfly (Michael Beecken & Stephen Parry) 4 3420 Heaven Sent (Sue Foreman & Alan Foreman) Hope to see many of you at the Europeans – there is plenty happening at the Club, and spectator boats for the final day! REGATTA NEWS (Herbalife J80). Gaastra IRC 0 The fight for the title in the class Gaastra IRC 0 was fierce throughout the week with racing conducted on short windward/leeward courses with the inclusion of one longer passage race around the western bays of Palma. Four out of the five Mini Maxi boats won at least one of the 11 races held, and the top three teams faced the last day separated by only three points. The title was decided in the final race with victory for American George Sakellaris sailing Shockwave. Hap Fauth’s Bella Mente and Roberto Tomasini’s Robertissima III completed the podium.

Jonny Fullerton Grand Prix Sailing www.gpsailing.org 33rd Copa del Rey MAPFRE in Palma de Mallorca The Bay of Palma confirmed its reputation as one of the favourite Mediterranean regatta venues with typically tropical high summer temperatures and light to moderate sea breezes. For six days, 120 boats from 22 nations took part in the 33rd Copa de Rey MAPFRE racing on three different courses in the Bay of Palma. Eight classes were represented sailing a mixture of windward/leeward and

coastal races. There was added excitement on the final day with an irregular sea breeze which brought the regatta to a close on a high! The names of the eight winners were decided in the last race of the championship. The champions of the 33rd Copa del Rey MAPFRE include Americans Shockwave (Gaastra IRC 0) and Quantum Racing (Barclays 52 Super Series), Italians Hurakan (Gaastra IRC 1) and Lelagain (Nespresso X 35), Russian Bronenosec (Gazprom Swan 60), and Spaniards Rats on Fire (BMW ORC 1), Movistar (BMW ORC 2) and Noticia

In the final day of competition Aifos finished a commendable fourth place in the class Gaastra IRC 1. In the fight for the championship, Giuseppe Parodi’s Hurakan didn’t give ground to any of his nine rivals. The Italian TP52 sealed his first title with seven victories in ten races. The winner of the final day’s race was French Mergui Mikael’s GP42 Team Vision Future, who finished second overall, followed by Austrian René Mangold’s Aquila, another IRC configured TP52. Gazprom Swan 60 * (see separate regatta report) The 33rd Copa del Rey MAPFRE acted as the 2014

The defender of the world title, Vladimir Liubomirov’s Bronenosec proved to be in best shape throughout the week, and was proclaimed world champion for the second consecutive year. The Russian boat finished with five victories out of ten races. The runner-up went to another Russian boat, Spirit of Europe, skippered by Boris Gusev. Third was Chinese Fan Yeliang’s Windward. Barclays 52 Super Series * (see separate regatta report) Seven TP52’s fought in Palma for the title in the Barclays 52 Super Series. The defender, American Quantum Racing, managed to stay on top of the scoring board for all six days due to their ultimate consistency. Although Quantum Racing scored less individual victories, a fourth in the final race was enough to be crowned champion of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE for a second consecutive year. Second was Swedish Niklas Zennström’s Rán Racing, followed by Alberto Roemmers’ Azzurra. The same three teams occupied the same positions in 2013. BMW ORC 1 Rafa Carbonell’s Swan 45 Rats on Fire successfully defended his title in the class BMW ORC 1. BMW ORC 2 Enrique Terol’s Sinergia 40 Movistar finished the championship with the best results of the entire fleet: eight victories out of ten races in the class BMW ORC 2. This victory means the sixth Copa del Rey MAPFRE for the Galician team (2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2014). It also means the seventh victory for its skipper, Pedro Campos, who sets a new record in the regatta (1993, 1995, 2002, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2014). The excitement of the day was in the fight for second place, which finally went to Lluis Blanchar’s Varador 2000, ahead of Teo Matheu’s Airlan Aermec. Just one point separated them in the final results. Nespresso X-35 Alessandro Solerio’s Lelagain won his second Copa del Rey MAPFRE (2010 and 2014). A discrete seventh place in the last race was enough for the Italian team to take glory. One point behind Javier Banderas’ Puerto Deportivo Benalmádena, skippered by Javier Cuevas. Javier Sanz’s Red Eléctrica de España, skippered by Alberto Viejo, closed the podium, winning the final race of the week. Herbalife J80 José María Torcida’s Noticia won in an overwhelming way in the class Herbalife J80. Torcida,

double world champion in the class (2007 and 2010), led the provisional classification from the third day of racing, and completed the regatta with a difference of 20 points over his nearest rival. Noticia won six out of the 12 races sailed, including the final days race. Carlos Martinez’s Movistar finished in second place, followed by Javier Padrón’s Herbalife. On shore activities Throughout the six days of competition there was also time for social activities. The Real Club Náutico de Palma was visited by well known faces from the world of sports, politics, music and television, as President of the Balearic Government, Jose Ramon Bauza; Mayor of Palma, Mateo Isern; the captain of the Davis Cup Spanish team, Carlos Moyá; Bruce Springsteen’s guitarist, Steven Van Zandt; Superbikes’ World Champion, David Salom; or former models and entrepreneurs as Fiona Ferrer and Antonia Dell’Atte, as well as the international model and actor Andrés Velencoso. Every evening, the music from Pachá enlivened the sailor’s tent where the traditional Sailor’s Party took place. The Owners’ Dinner was again a great success, with around 600 guests. H.R.M. REGATTA NEWS Quantum Racing’s Terry Hutchinson extended his personal tally of TP52 wins at the Copa del Rey to three but on a sweltering hot, busy dock of the Real Club Nautico de Palma, affirmed that this was the hardest. “At the moment I feel relieved rather than any sense of elation. Rán Racing had us under pressure for sure.”

Jonny Fullerton Grand Prix Sailing www.gpsailing.org Holding on to the King’s Cup Crown. Barclays 52 Super Series at the 33rd Copa del Rey, Palma de Mallorca There was to be no succession at the 2014 Copa del Rey Mapfre. Rán Racing may have gone into the final day of the Mediterranean’s showcase regatta with designs on the King’s Cup, just three points behind reigning champions Quantum Racing, but the defending champions squashed the challenge from Niklas Zennström’s team on the start line of the final and rolled out overall winners in Palma for the second season in a row. For Doug DeVos’ American flagged team which is lead by America’s Cup winner Ed Baird it was their second Barclays 52 Super Series event win in a row, adding to their victory in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.

They denied Rán Racing their crack at the Copa del Rey title on the start line of the last race. Quantum Racing set themselves into Rán’s lee bow in the final seconds, bouncing them out to the less favoured side of the course. Zennström’s team rounded the top mark in sixth while Eduardo de Souza Ramos’ Brazilian crew on Phoenix streaked away to win ahead of Azzurra. While Quantum Racing came to Palma with the winning momentum after taking the world title in Porto Cervo six weeks ago, Rán Racing scored two poor results back-to-back over the first and second days. After a long, hard debrief the Rán crew transformed themselves and scored four race wins, more than any other team, and between then and today’s finale in 15-20kts of SE’ly breeze, outsailed their rivals, in part thanks to a small but telling speed edge downwind.

“This time was the hardest. I have done this regatta three times. Once I steered Desafio and twice I have done tactics on Quantum Racing and all three have had the same result. And this one was by far the hardest. We lead a lot of times at the top mark and Rán would pass us. They have a nice boat and they understand the boat and its modes and the interesting thing about racing on this course with the Maxi boats is that the courses are two or three tenths of a mile longer than those which we are normally using. And that allows them a pretty good opportunity to reel us all in. And today we sailed above our sweet spot and we went away from them downwind.” Azzurra finished second on the final day to finish third overall just three points behind Rán Racing and seven points behind the regatta winners. In the overall Barclays Super Series standings Quantum Racing have stretched their lead to eight points over Rán Racing, doubling their cushion since the start of the Copa del

Rey. Azzurra are just four points behind Rán Racing. Copa del Rey Mapfre Results: (after ten races) 1. Quantum Racing, USA, (Doug De Vos USA) (2,1,2,2,6,1,2,2,4,3) 25pts 2. REGATTA NEWS Jonny Fullerton Grand Prix Sailing www.gpsailing.org Bronenosec Crowned Swan 60 World Champion. Gazprom Swan 60 World Championship at the 33rd Copa del Rey The 2014 edition of the Gazprom Swan 60 World Championship saw Vladimir Liubomirov’s Bronenosec (RUS) take the title for the second time. Sailing with a mix of Russian and Italian crew members the victory was particularly sweet having sailed an exemplary series. The seven boat fleet predominantly from the Baltic region, enjoyed hot Mediterranean conditions all week, highlighted by a moderate sea breeze on the final day. Vladimir Liubomirov was quick to express his delight commenting: “I am happy we won; as we got a little bit more

wind on the final day it was a lot of fun in the best conditions possible with a great crew alongside me. It is not my first time in Palma and every time I race here I really enjoy it. Palma has fantastic conditions for sailing, probably some of the best in the world, and the Real Club Nautico Palma and our Race Officer organised a superb event.” “We have been fighting for every point, we have been very consistent and everything went well from boat speed to tactics to crew handling. The boat performed well but it wasn’t just boat speed it was a combination of everything. We started very well on a high note and from then on we didn’t really feel the pressure of the others catching us. It was a good week.”

60 our boat speed and boat handling improved which led to a great run of results at the end of the regatta which put us in second place on the podium. The racing has been incredibly tight and we are thrilled with our final result.”

Spirit of Europe finished second overall, boat captain Tim Kröger commented, “We have really enjoyed the week. As we got more familiar with the Swan

Windward representing China started the regatta badly with a DSQ, but recovered with consistent results during the week to complete the podium.

AROUND THE REGIONS

GIBRALTAR 5. Vessels flying the Red Ensign are afforded the protection of the Royal Navy. 6. The vessel does not have to visit Gibraltar to be registered here although there are very many good reasons to visit this unique location. Three further reasons now join the argument as to why it makes sense to register a yacht in Gibraltar:

John Alcantara - International Boat & Yacht Brokers www.boatshedgibraltar.com Compelling Reasons to Register Your Yacht in Gibraltar In the last months, further compelling reasons have emerged to make the Gibraltar Red Ensign the flag of choice. However, these changes aside, Gibraltar already has a host of advantages for registering a yacht in this unique southern European territory: 1. The process is simple, hassle free and easily understood – in English. 2. Marine mortgages can be secured against the yacht and recorded with the Registry, this helps with the financing of larger more expensive vessels. This is unique to all Part I Red Ensign Flags, of which Gibraltar is one. The UK also has a Part III (Small Ships Register – SSR) which is simple and cheap for

craft under 24m, however, boats registered under this arrangement cannot use the boat as security to obtain a marine mortgage and one needs to be resident in the UK for 185 days of the year to use it. 3. The Gibraltar Yacht Registry is open to all British Citizens (including British Overseas Citizens) and citizens of EU and EEA (European Economic Area) as long as they have a locally resident representative person – such as Boatshed Gibraltar. This avoids the bureaucracy and regulation that may be found in other nation’s registries and should, for example, an EEA citizen have their yacht based in Gibraltar, they would still be able to circulate in EU waters for up to 18 months without having to pay VAT. 4. Registration in Gibraltar allows owners, in certain circumstances, to avoid the need to pay European VAT.

A. In the June 2014 budget the Gibraltar Government abolished import duty on yachts under 18m in length having abolished it for larger yachts two years earlier. Yachts can now be berthed and use Gibraltar as their permanent base without incurring crippling taxes. From Gibraltar they can enter EU waters for 18 months at a time without becoming liable for VAT as long as the owner is resident outside the EU e.g. living on his yacht in Gibraltar. B. The second is a tightening up by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK MCA) of the residency rules that qualify an owner to register his yacht on the SSR. It is no longer acceptable to the UK MCA that an owner has an address in

the UK, he must be resident in the UK for 185 days a year to register under SSR. There are thousands of vessels on the SSR owned and operated by expatriates and this will no longer be allowed. Owners face a large fine if they declare themselves resident in the UK when they are, in fact, living abroad. C. The Spanish Maritime Authorities now allows Spanish residents to own foreign flagged vessels as long as the VAT and Matriculation Tax have been paid on the vessel. Not much of an advantage you might think but the lower level of regulation on private owners can be attractive. As an example Spanish flagged privately owned and operated yachts are obliged to pass a seaworthiness test (ITB) every 5 years. This is not required of privately owned and operated boats flying the Red Ensign. For help or advice in registering a yacht to fly the British Gibraltar Red Ensign, contact www.boatshedgibraltar.com

Elizabeth Parr Menorca Cruising (+34) 660 647 845 www.menorcasailing.co.uk Three Local Boys Compete in the European Laser Youth Championships in Norway Three local dinghy sailors from Mahon, Menorca, travelled to Norway at the beginning of August for the European Youth Laser 4.7 Championships in Moss. The trip was made possible with sponsorship from the Club Maritimo de Mahon, Sasga Yachts, Menorca Cruising School, De Náutica and the devotion of their parents, who undertook the three day journey overland to get the lasers to the event. Enriq Pons, Nicolas Werner and Ramiro Foguet train together at the Club Maritimo in Mahon and they competed in the U18 class. It was the first time the boys had entered the championships together and they all qualified in the Gold category and then finished in an impressive 26th, 39th and 44th place respectively out of the 180 boys competing. This was the first year that

Rigged and ready to go Nicolas Werner, or Nico, had competed in the European event, after finishing 2nd in his class in the National Championships earlier in the year. He said he felt comfortable competing at the higher level and feels he had the ability to finish in the top 15. The boys had trained for light winds between 5-7knots, which are the norm in Moss, but in the event, after light winds on Day 1 the wind increased to between 18 and 30 knots for the rest of the event and there were big waves. Nicholas said, ‘we now know that we can compete at the European level but we need to increase our fitness, weight and strength to be competitive in the stronger winds.’ The sailors from the Canary Islands were very impressive and they dominated the event, Alejandro Bethancourt winning the Boys event and Silvia Morales winning the Girls event. On their return from Moss the boys began training with the larger Radial sail, ready for next season. Nico said, ‘this year we have benefitted from the three of us training together and sailing together 4 times a week but next year Ramiro will be moving to Palma to train at the Escuela Balear d’Esports in Palma.’

Windy conditions in Norway Fonduco, and by cleaning boats. He plans to study physical engineering and then naval engineering in Barcelona. Nico’s father was from Germany and his mother is French and he has grown up in Menorca and so languages are not a problem for him. In Norway he enjoyed the chance to meet and talk to competitors from all over Europe finding out what life is like in countries such as Israel and Russia as well as Italy,

France, Switzerland, the Netherlands. During the week of the championship boys camped close to the event in Moss, which is 65km south of Oslo. The event was organized jointly by the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club and Moss Yacht Club, which is one of the most active yacht clubs in Norway, with a large youth department and a big fleet.

Nico will also be studying hard for his final school exams and he also has to find time to play the saxophone in all the local fiestas with the local Mahon band. He gets paid well for his music and he is also earning money to help fund his sailing by working for his mother’s sailmaking business, Velas

SIMPLY THE BEST NIGHTLIFE IN THE WORLD IBIZA

AROUND THE REGIONS and achievements – making it one of the longest running award ceremonies around. The star studded after party that is one of the hottest tickets of the month. DIARY DATES :

picture by phrank.net Early September is all about the Ibiza – World - Grand Prix… I am writing in mid-August and it’s impossible to miss the hefty amount of Black and Blue advertising banners unfurling across the island. Looks like this high octane event is going to be huge! It’s a first for Ibiza and we are verrrrrrry excited about the arrival of the Class 1 powerboats and super speedy aquabikes… and with Ushuaia as official partners we know there’ll be some seriously glam parties to hit too. Spread over 5th 6th and 7th of September it gets the island’s fave month started in style and with it the Playa d’en Bossa’s makeover seems complete - there is action for everyone with events showcasing many of the new, high end beach clubs, spread out across the longest stretch of sand on the island. For the full run down of the race schedule see the website: ibizaworldchampionship. com. Don’t miss whats sure to be the highlight diary date - the official party on the 5th at Ushuaia – line ups are being kept under wraps but we trust it will be huge. Once the excitement of the Grand

Prix dies down, the realization that there are only a few more weeks to go will slowly dawn on the jaded party crowd and will re-energise the island. The parties will become wilder and as the tourist numbers dwindle the island crowd finds time and energy for one last hurrah (or ten!!) While the actual club closings have finally pushed out of September and into October – Space’s closing on the 05.10 unofficially closes the very fabulous 2014 Ibiza season – there are all the individual event closings throughout the month and as 2014 has seen even more events than ever the closings take more than a month to complete. It was a lot of fun trying to make each and every opening let’s see what happens when we do the same with the closings - fortunately we have the long winter months to catch up on the sleep we are about to miss. They start at Ushuaia - the last week of August sees David Guetta, Hardwell and Avicii end their summer residencies. The next big one is Amnesia’s Sunday night on the 07.09 – Marcus Shultz is

not going without a fight… okay not a fight, but an epic 7hour set. September 11th is the last date for Armin Van Buuren’s state of trance. Then a jump to the 17th Ibiza Rocks treat us to the fantastic Bombay Bicycle club – this will be an end of season highlight for sure, and they follow up 2 days later ending WAR on 19.09 featuring producer extraordinaire Mark Ronson. From Monday 22nd all the way through to the Monday 6th October closing parties are a daily occurrence… and there are far too many to list here, but my choices are listed in the Party Diary Dates. In the middle of the closing parties is the annual EDM celebration that is The Pacha DJ Awards. This year they seem later than usual – we have to wait until the 30.09 to see if our selection of DJs, Artists and Events are going home with the big green glowing lump of kryptonite… but we are not complaining, maybe at 17 years old you feel you can do what you like! Starting way way back in 1997 they have been awarding electronic music titans and newbies alike for their triumphs

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE Roger Horner - E3 Systems (+34) 971 404 208 info@e3s.com www.e3s.com

“It’s August and it’s hot! Damn hot! Real hot!” so said one of my favourite actors, Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam. Just heard about his sad death - what a tragic loss of a fantastic talent. Apart from being hot in August, it’s always a bit dry for any new technology. However, I came across a new car that is not only hot but is expected to be a technical marvel. Bugatti plans a hybrid successor to the Veyron

Bugatti insiders are talking about the successor to the legendary Veyron. The car will reportedly use a hybrid powertrain to make it quicker and faster than any version of the Veyron, including the world record-breaking Super Sport.

52

Autocar reports that this nextgeneration hyper car will be capable of flipping the last two digits of the Veyron’s 268 mph (431km/h) world record to 286 mph. Bugatti’s computer simulations suggest that the new car will also be quicker, launching to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.3 seconds! They also suggest that they will add nearly 300 hp, upping the total system output to close to 1,500 hp. To achieve that huge power output, Bugatti plans to develop a hybrid power train along the same lines as its competitors McLaren and Ferrari. Bugatti is still experimenting with multiple prototype layouts, but indications are that it will task an electric drive with assisting an engine based on the Veyron’s quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16. It’s not clear how much that electric unit will improve upon the Veyron’s extraordinarily high fuel consumption of 10 mpg but it’s pretty certain to be similar. Autocar road test editor Matt Prior made a very good point. “We’re well into the realms of academia now. Making a road car that can do 286 mph is one thing; making a road car do it on road tyres is rather more difficult.” Given that the car is not even developed yet, the manufacturers and their tyre partners have some time to figure it all out before putting the cars to the test. The Veyron successor will go on sale reportedly in 2016.

I expect we will see it on the Bugatti booth at the 2016 Monaco Show and as a squad car in the Dubai Traffic Police! MINI Superleggera™ Vision – timeless beauty that blends the traditional with the modern.

Euroconsult estimates that between 2014 and 2023, a total of 1,155 satellites will be manufactured and orbited, worth a collective total of $248 billion. The report, “Satellites to be Built & Launched,” attributes only 25 percent of this projected business to commercial space companies, with the majority, 75 percent, coming from government programs. O3b successfully launch and begin service with their full initial constellation. O3b Networks, who are launching new Medium Earth Orbiting (MEO) satellites, have

begun on-orbit testing and their customers are already trialling the service. The latest four satellites, launched July 10th, 2014, doubled O3b’s constellation and raised the company to the level of a global operator. The O3b constellation provides huge bandwidth with much reduced latency when compared to geostationary satellites. As the satellites are orbiting, the ground or maritime installation needs to track the satellite. On a vessel, using current technology, three 2+m tracking antennas are required. Two of the three track the satellite and the third is in position as a backup. Clearly the scale of this installation prohibits the use on any but the largest yachts. However, our colleagues at Kymeta, who are developing the flat panel satellite antenna will be demonstrating later this year their antenna working with O3b. This will reduce the amount of ground and vessel real estate needed, thus opening up the possibilities of using this service to smaller vessels. DIVE UPDATE an NGO. Jaques Cousteau was on their board of advisers and they were the first organisation to sanction nitrox diving. Often referred to as following an ‘old school’ philosophy of diving based on original Navy diving training, they strive to instil a sense of learning from experience. Their Motto is, ‘Dive safety through education’.

Nick Stael von Holstein Nick@ondineescape.com Dive Certification Agency – which one should you choose for your training? Did you know that there are over 100 dive certification agencies worldwide. Many are country specific and base their affiliation with CMAS (World Diving Federation). So when it comes to learning to dive and getting certified which agency should you choose? Personally, my first instructor rating was with BSAC & CMAS and since then I have also earned PADI & NAUI instructor ratings and have gained different experiences teaching under different organisations. The most well known organisations are BSAC, NAUI, PADI, CMAS & SSI. British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) - BSAC is unique diver training agency in that it operates under a club system. It was founded in 1953. You become a member of a Club and you participate in regular training over time, typically meeting once a week for training, usually in the evenings at the local sports centre and then on the weekends participating in diving excursions. You can however participate in intensive training where you complete a course in a week or more of solid training as well. Most BSAC instructors are amateurs as opposed to professionals operating in diving schools. Diving with BSAC is therefore a social activity and hobby that you continue to build on with training over an extended period of time. Given that UK waters are relatively cold and have restricted visibility, BSAC training is regarded by its members as more comprehensive than some. Specifically it places emphasis on rescue training very early in the programme. BSAC’s Motto is ‘Dive with friends’. Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques

56

(CMAS), also known as the World Underwater Federation – This organisation like BSAC follows a club system and sets a very high standard. Founded in Monaco in 1959 with Headquarters in Italy, it is one of one of the oldest dive organisations. CMAS itself does not provide training or conduct the issuing of certifications, the federation sets the standard. To be certified, firstly, through national diving federations affiliated to the CMAS Technical Committee using their member diving clubs, their member instructors where the federation is exclusively an instructor organisation or by agreement with independent underwater diving training organizations operating in the countries where those federations are based. Secondly, from specially accredited dive centres known as CMAS Dive Centers (CDC) who use dedicated CMAS training materials. Their Motto is ‘Quality in diving’. Scuba Schools International (SSI) – An organisation that offers both scuba & free-diving training. Founded in 1970 and one of the pioneers in professional scuba training. A major difference between SSI and other diver education organizations like PADI, NAUI OR CMAS and others is that SSI is a retail based organization, intended to ensure the quality of training worldwide. SSI also has a swim school, teaching all

levels from beginner through to lifeguard certification. Professional Association of Divig Instructors (PADI) – PADI is recognised as the worlds largest dive organisations and was founded in 1966 by a NAUI Instructor. They were one of the first organisations to offer diving on a recreational level opening up diving to the gnerl public. Previously, diving was considered a professional sport and most systems were based on military training techniques. PADI are masters of marketing and dive shops are empowered to establish a profitable business model and therefore the most frequently recognised. When you ask someone if they are diver certified, most commonly people will respond, ‘Yes, I have my PADI certification’ as opposed ‘yes I have my Open water certification’ which is a testament to their marketing skills. PADI has been at the forefront of introducing diving to the common masses but is subject to criticism as it has grown, in particular, that it “dumbs down” scuba diving training courses, making them over-simplified, too short and easy; and that it “profiteers” from demand for diver training. Their Motto is ‘The way the world learns to dive’. National Association of Diving Instructors (NAUI) – Founded in 1959, NAUI is not-for-profit organisation and registered as

Equivalences between agencies in course training vary. There are many examples. To illustrate one is that a PADI Advanced Open water Diver course involves 5 certification dives while an SSI Advanced Open water rating involves 4 specialty courses and completion of 24 dives. No other agency’s advanced diver level compares. When, I ask to see a divers’ certification, I will not only look at their certification level and logbook but also which organisation they are trained with. This gives me a better idea of their experience and training background. Likewise when I take someone diving, I can see clearly that the better trained ones are often as a result of having been trained with a specific organisation. However, it’s not necessarily the defining factor. Ultimately it comes down to the quality of instruction; the standards set by the dive school and most importantly the instructor. It’s not about biggest is best. Often times when any organisation gets bigger, the level of quality delivered can be diminished. It should be remembered that learning to dive and building on your experience is not necessarily about getting your entry level open water certification and walking away but to build on your knowledge with continued training and let your passion evolve. After all, if you want experience night diving or diving on a wreck at depth and broaden your underwater experiences, then you are going to need more training and practice beyond that of open water level. SUPDATE

Sarah Drane sarah@purplecakefactory.com What Should I Buy? Amongst the avalanche of fan mail I receive on an hourly basis (I have had to employ elves to sift through it all) the question I get asked the most is “should I buy an inflatable or solid board?”. Now, if we work on the caveat that I am far from qualified to dish out advice, here are my thoughts. Those new to this SUP lark often fence-straddle between inflatable and solid. Some don’t even know that inflatables exist (where have you been?). My opinion on this one is quite clear – go inflatable. Why? Two, three years ago, only a few manufacturers had the inflatable thing nailed, they’d spent enough intelligent time and money on the necessary technology to create the perfect blow-up board. If you were lucky enough to buy one of those – ace, if you weren’t, oops you bought a turkey - it would bend like a banana and baulk at the first sniff of a wave. Fast-forward to today and

Porto Colom

plenty of people are making really rather decent inflatable boards, you’d be unlucky to plump for an unfit-for-purpose version. And if you opt for a safe well-known brand (Mistral, Red Paddle, Naish, Tower...) it’s hard to go wrong (in my opinion). But why really is an inflatable better than a solid? I’ll give you five good reasons: Storage. I live in an apartment. I have a small terrace. I quite like using my terrace for a chilled glass of vino tinto and good conversation. I do not want it monopolised by 12 feet of fibreglass/plastic. Besides, it won’t fit in my lift and I am on the second floor. An inflatable can be rolled up, bagged, and stuffed in a cupboard or under the bed.

a roof rack on a convertible?) transporting a solid SUP board is quite tricky. Far easier to roll up, bag, and shove in the boot. Flexibility. Say the sea’s chopping up in the Bay of Palma, but it’s glass-like up north in Pollensa. An inflatable gives you the option to switch locations until you find the right conditions. And that includes checking it into the aircraft hold as ‘sports equipment’ if you get a gig on a sailing yacht in the Caribbean or you’re off to Amsterdam for a weekend break. If I had the time and the breadth of wallet, believe me, I would SUP the world. Have inflatable, will travel. Damageability. See above. I am a girl. I am particularly clumsy and break, on average, four items of crockery/glassware a week. Only today I snapped the arm off my favourite sunglasses. Clatter a solid SUP board into some rocks, it’s damaged. You can patch it and stick bumpers on the side, but it’s damaged. An inflatable is like a bumper car, whilst it’s inadvisable to use it like one, the odd close-upand-personal with a rock isn’t going to leave a scratch. Of course there a dozen other

factors one needs to consider, are you a slight individual or a hefty chap, do you plan on surf-SUPing or just fairweather touring, do you plan to enter a competition or keep it amateur? This is where you really really need to ask an expert, who isn’t Sarah Drane. Whatever you decide – TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. I have already penned columns on Bellini Surf Shop (www.bellini. es) and mentioned various other centres. This month we had a fantastic seven-strong SUP in Porto Colom with the lovely Andreas from SUP Center Mallorca (www.sup-centermallorca.com) and it was great to try the southeast instead of stopping southwest. I also converted two more adults and two more amazing lovely children to SUP off the coast of Andratx. Lucky for us we had a Mistral 11ft 5in Adventure SUP (pointy front) and an 8ft 6in Junior SUP on hand to test out what worked best. I loved the 11ft 5in, the niños loved the Junior. So, the moral of the story – don’t listen to me, pay for a rental at a SUP centre to suit you, and make your own mind up.

NEWS 4 STEWS charger, and a determination to travel light both in weight and psyche. What else could you possibly need to walk across Spain?!

Ruth Laver ruth@superyachtluxury.com www.superyachtluxury.com https://www.facebook.com/ WellnestNelson?ref=hl https://twitter.com/ superyachtluxur Camino de Santiago: A Pilgrimage Across Spain

My objective was clear; to seek solitude, peace and reflection. I wanted to travel alone. My friends agreed that the timing was right, and gave useful advice on keeping well hydrated, avoiding blisters and being prepared for all weathers. I couldn’t really imagine it being that cold in Spain, whilst it was baking hot here in Palma. So I went prepared, but without a map. Apparently the Camino path was well sign posted, with yellow arrows and the synonymous scallop shells, so I winged it, as I figured that deodorant was more important in this game of strategic light weight packing.

As an ex Chief Stewardess I’m no stranger to a challenge. In June I decided to kick another item of the bucket list by walking the Camino De Santiago. It felt like it was the right time, and I followed my intuition and impulsively booked a flight to Santander in the North of Spain. My credit card had a great time in Decathalon, as I made quick decisions on the gear that I would need for this epic pilgrimage which stretches across the width of Spain.

I guess I had a few lessons to learn! As I set off on the longest walk that I had ever under taken I was vaguely surprised to see no sign of this ‘epic pilgrimage’ or the famous yellow signs. In my very broken and limited Spanish I asked for directions, the locals pointed me in the right direction, but this illusive well trodden path could not be found. I walked for hours, wondering where this sacred path could be. And then finally I found it, a bright yellow Scallop Shell marking the way.

I had no specific route planned, and I quite enjoyed the freedom of setting off with the intention to just go with the flow. After all, I had waterproof clothes, a multipurpose shampoo, phone

It’s such a thrill to know that you’re on the right path. Which I guess is a bit like life really. You know when you’re on the right path, because it feels right and things just flow. I relished

Ruth on the Camino de Santiago each sign which happily pointed me in the right direction as I hiked through the wide and vast Cantabrian rolling green hills. The air was fresh, and tiny pretty flowers smiled, as eagles flew high above. This was it, I was on track and I was finally walking the Camino! I’d earmarked 4 weeks to walk the duration of the Camino from Santander to Santiago. Strategically I’d decided to miss the Pyrenees section of the path, as it’s a notoriously hard mountainous section right at the beginning of the route. Many people choose to walk one section of the Camino each year, and lots of people return year after year to walk the whole route, choosing variations on their previous paths. Days passed, and quickly turned into weeks. I stayed strong, and enjoyed each moment, grateful to have the luxury of time to enjoy this open expanse of pathway, and meditative reflection. I delved deep into pain, loneliness and boredom when it eventually arrived. And I took very special care of myself to ensure that I could last the distance, practicing long restorative yoga sessions, and self-massaging achy joints using warm olive oil. When the going got tough towards the end of each day on the last few kilometres, I would reward myself with some uplifting 80 ‘s music, as that was a sure fire way to motivate me, always giving me an extra burst of energy and a spring in my step.

The very amazing Emmeline Gee of Angels On Board did a great job of being my Camino Angel by checking in with me every day so that I could give her my location, and my intended destination. As a safety measure, it’s important to have a reliable friend that is aware of your movements. I recommend that you follow this precaution if you consider walking the Camino. I smiled from ear to ear for most of the journey, as friendly locals wished me ‘buen camino’, tooting their car horns and waving merrily as I forged on. The Camino has been used for years by Pilgrims to pray and heal. The ground really is sacred, and the energy of it is hard to describe. As I neared the end of the walk of I decided to dedicate the days walk to my friends. So, I posted on facebook that I would be privileged to pray, meditate, manifest or wish for anyone’s dedication on that day, and as soon as I pressed ‘send’ the requests flooded in. Friends asking for exam success, world peace, baby conception, forgiveness, and healing. The next day I awoke early with the weight of these requests firmly on my shoulders, ready to positively stamp them into this spiritual ground. Along the route lots of way markers are used by pilgrims to place prayer rocks. Following this tradition I placed prayers solemnly and did all I could do that day to send positive vibrations to all those requests. I danced in the rain, connected with the earth, gave gratitude for my many blessings

and deeply meditated on those requests. With nationalities from literally all around the globe, I connected mostly with Australian’s & American’s. One really interesting lady that I met, from Australia was on a world tour of pilgrimages and had recently completed a long pilgrimage through Japan where she visited Buddhist monasteries. Accommodation along the Camino is basic but sufficient. Albergues are hostels which are specifically for pilgrims of the Camino, and they cost between €3-€18 per night for a bunk in a shared room. Many offer a special pilgrims menu for around €8, which usually includes unlimited wine. In Albergues where meals were not offered there was often cooking facilities, and pilgrims would cook joint meals by pooling their resources. It wasn’t unusual to find myself sleeping in a room with 20 other people, amongst a chorus of snoring. I even spent one night sleeping in a bunk above a Priest! Lights usually went out early at around 10pm, as pilgrims were keen to rise early, sometimes even starting to walk before 5am in order to put the miles in. It was lovely to see lots of ‘love on the trail’, as couples met along the way, and friendships were forged. My advice to any single friends now is ‘go walk the Camino’. You are sure to meet several hotties! I met so many lovely people. You see, it’s a special kind of

person that decides to take on this kind of personal challenge. Near to the end of my journey I’d noticed a fellow pilgrim limping awkwardly, whilst carrying a really heavy pack. I’d slowed to talk to him, and asked him how he had injured his leg. He told me that he’d fallen over on a bridge, and it had aggravated a knee injury, so I offered to stop and massage his knee, explaining to him that I’m a massage therapist. So he pulled out his sleeping mat, and I whipped out some olive oil and there by the side of the path I massaged, listened and did my best to help this man in distress. He thanked me and I continued on my way. Later that day my very own hottie, Mr Super Yacht Luxury, joined me for the final 4 days on the path. I was ready to hold his hand, my time of solitude and reflection was complete. We laughed out loud along the way and eventually reached the City of Santiago. It was a long and arduous walk into the city, and as my adrenalin levels started to drop I started to feel the effects of 24 days on the road, and 515 kilometers of walking on my tired body. The last 2 kilometers were the hardest. I was hoping to see some of the friendly faces that I’d met along the way in the City. And just as we approached the famous Cathederal we bumped into the man that I’d met a few days before that had the knee injury, he was bouncing along without his backpack and limp

NEWS 4 STEWS was very apparent here. We’d arrived at a building site!!!! But there we sat quietly in the middle of the square, processing the moment, and the stillness.

The final few steps! Continued from page 61 free. We stopped to chat for a few minutes and he thanked me for helping him during a really hard day. I was grateful too to see his smiling face, and to know that this random act of kindness had touched this kindred spirit. I’m not telling you this to boast, but rather to encourage you to reach out to your fellow human beings, with random acts of kindness, it changes the world, and it’ll change yours too. Soft rain and the sounds of Allelujah from a busker greeted our arrival as we took our final steps to our destination, the square in front of the Cathederal of Santiago Compestella. Relief, elation and peace washed over me. A man made way for us to sit, gently acknowledging that we’d walked a very long way to reach this point. An overwhelming sense of achievement pulsed through my veins as I finally stopped walking and slowly unstrapped my pack, to stare up at the cathederal, which was covered in scaffolding and surrounded by tourists. The cliché, ‘the journey is more important than the destination’

Italian tourists walked past and high fived me, and I smiled and squealed with joy. It was done. The journey was over. Ever since working as a yachtie, the desire to crack open a cold beer either at the end of a hard day, the sight of a sunset, or the departure of charter guests, has never left me, so it was a good job we’d stashed a couple of cold ones in our bags as we’d entered the city. We toasted our success. On returning to Palma I popped into the Islander office to be greeted with cheers of ‘The Wanderer returns!’, as I slumped into a comfy chair proudly sharing tales of my journey. Team Islander were full of questions, and I was full of joy to share my experience. As I was about to leave the Islander office, Damian, their expert bi-lingual International Sales Manager, casually asked me ‘How’s your Spanish coming along Ruth’. Embarrassed, I explained that despite the Intensive Spanish Course, Private lessons, and my adventure across Spain that I was still struggling to learn the lingo. Damian looked me straight in the eye and said passionately ‘Ruth, if you can walk the Camino, you can do anything, and that means that you CAN learn to speak Spanish’. Those words remained with me. And from that moment on, with my accomplishment firmly behind me, I walked through Santa Catalina smiling, in the flow, on my new challenging journey, determined to learn Spanish.

Great Retaurant, L’Ospite A great new restaurant has opened, very near to Palma museum, in front of Santa Cruz church. The location soaks up the essence of Palma old town, with talented buskers playing soulful Jazz to entertain you whilst you enjoy the gastronomic delights of this very exciting venture between renowned Italian Chef Alessandro Di Feo and Gert Hofmann. Service is delivered with efficiency, decorum and entertainment in equal measure. This Italian eatery has nailed the whole restaurant experience. With a well-chosen wine list to compliment the contemporary and classic fusion menu. This food isn’t confused, it’s steeped with history and transcends into modernity with flare. The highlight was the cult Italian classic, Parmigiana ‘Della Nonna’ Con Caviar Di Bufala Hecho En Casa. My heart

melted, whist my taste buds had a live party. This recipe was handed down from Chef Alessandro’s Grandmother, who originally taught him to cook. His passion for good food shines through both in the exquisite taste and presentation. This is probably also down to the use of local and seasonal ingredients which he hand picks from Palma markets each day. We enjoyed fine Majorcan and Italian wines served in suitably fine stemware, and a desert that we nearly had a domestic over. The perfect end to this delicious journey of soul food was a delicious combination of mascarpone cream, berries, crunchy nuts and local honey. It almost bought tears to my eyes, especially when I realised that I was the one that had agreed to share! A New Massage Service In Santa Catalina Emily Larkin is a massage therapist and yoga teacher offering Lomi Lomi Massage and Thai Yoga Massage at SimplifyT in the heart of Santa Catalina. Emily has worked as an energy healing practitioner since 2008, and trained as a massage therapist when she realised the profound healing qualities of nurturing touch. Emily says that Lomi Lomi is the style of massage she is questioned about most as many people are not familiar with this native Hawaiian Healing art. Lomi Lomi means “to massage” “to knead” or “to weave”. Oil is used during the massage to aid with the long, flowing stokes that are characteristic of Lomi Lomi. Both the forearms and hands are used in fluid, rhythmic motion to give a deep, therapeutic massage that helps to release muscle tension as well as physical and mental stress. The Hawaiian shamans believed in a strong mind body connection, so as the massage progresses, and physical blockages are relieved, we release blockages within the energetic and emotional layers of our being to create a holistic healing treatment. The depth and speed of the massage differ depending on the client’s needs with each massage being unique. Clients say that they find this form of massage to be deeply nurturing, and the flowing strokes to be reminiscent of waves moving the body.

In Thai Yoga massage a futon mattress is used rather than a massage bed, and the client wears loose, comfortable clothing. Thai massage is often described as passive yoga as it integrates similar stretches used when practicing yoga. Unlike regular massage, the muscles are not rubbed, so there is no need for oil to be used. In Thai Yoga Massage, the body is compressed, stretched and rocked to relieve tension within the muscles and clear energy blockages. The thumbs, palms, forearms and feet can be used to create movement within the client’s body, stretching muscles and tendons, opening joints, toning internal organs, relieving tension and restoring balance. Emily aims to ensure her clients have a deeply relaxing massage, customised for their individual needs so that they are left feeling rejuvenated in both body and mind. Why not treat yourself to a relaxing massage experience with special prices during September! Lomi Lomi: 60 mins: 40 Eur, 90 mins, 60 Eur, and 120mins: 80 Eur. Traditional Thai Yoga Massage: 90 mins: 60 EUR, 120 mins: 80 EUR Emily will also be teaching regular Yin Yoga classes at Earth Yoga in Santa Catalina on Monday’s at 2pm starting 1 September. Yin Yoga is a static, mindful practice focusing on releasing the fascia and deep connective tissue within the body. For appointments, contact: Emily on +34 722 752 629 emily@inspirus-living.com

NEWS 4 STEWS If you could give your 20yr old self one piece of advice what would it be? Be mindful of your choices, live simply and take care of your body... follow your heart and chase your dreams and not the money. Love what you do, if not, change it, your time is limited, don’t waste it living a life that doesn’t satisfy you, keep searching. Be true to yourself... if you are authentic, you will shine!

Stew of the Month: Rebecca Lewis How did your yachting career begin? I decided to escape London, to take a few months break from my life as a professional photographer in the fashion and music industry.... and somehow I got swept away! That was 5 years ago! Why did you decide to become freelance? I realised I needed to give more time to discover my other passions - yoga, running and plant-based nutrition. I now teach yoga and coach barefoot/natural running technique. Both following the idea of moving in harmony with your body, reducing and eliminating injury and promoting ultimate health and vitality, allowing the body to get strong and flexible and heal itself. We have to realise, it’s an incredible machine and we are not deficient in drugs or surgery! Where did you train as a Yoga teacher? I trained with the incredible Meghan Currie, check out her YouTube videos. She does Yoga Teacher Training in different places, I did mine on Little Corn Island in Nicaragua. Will be doing more training with Chris Chavez this winter. What is the best onboard event that you have co-ordinated for charter?

66

Teaching a sweet yoga class to the owners on the deck of their super yacht in the Caribbean. What are your best strategies for spoiling charter guests? Find out what they really love, and surprise them. It’s their holiday, make it special. How do you keep children onboard entertained? Kiddie yoga on deck, they love it! What is your onboard pet hate? One-use plastic and chemical cleaners! Bottled water is especially unnecessary when there are sophisticated filtration systems that are more cost effective. What is your signature cocktail? Anti-oxidant busting green smoothie! Favourite movie? These are not necessarily my favourite movies, but I think are ‘must watch’ movies. ‘The Ghosts In Our Machine’ and ‘Cowspiracy’ documentaries. Just released now, to stream, download or rent. What is your favourite yachting destination? Mallorca! I LOVE this gem of an island... it has everything I want, mountain hiking, trail running, great for yoga in the beautiful outdoors, clean sea, relaxed and friendly culture, cycling and climbing.

How can aspiring Stewardess’ gain experience before entering the yachting industry. Anything in the service industry will always help... but any environment where you can gain confidence with dealing with people and tuning in to understanding others needs... the practical stuff you can learn. Each yacht has their different ways of doing things anyway. Which are your favourite crew agents? I’ve never needed to use an agent, all my work has been word-of-mouth. But Angels On Board are a great agency for professional wellness crew. What do you least enjoy about yachting? The thoughtless waste and pollution, the ocean is our asset and our income, let’s give it some respect! What’s your favourite adventure in Mallorca? Trail running and hiking in the Tramuntana Mountains, Torrent de Pareis is especially cool. What has been the best training course that you have done in your yachting career? Yoga Teacher Training! Not exactly a yachting certificate, but it has really helped with the way I think about life, allowing me to be more understanding and take everything in my stride a little easier. What has been your career highlight? Racing classic regattas, deliveries with a great crew on fine sailing yachts, being humbled by the vastness of the ocean.

Best housekeeping tip / hack? The Enjo cleaning system! Amazing! No chemicals and it really works! Lots of Super Yachts are already fans, just need to get the rest on-board now. What is your best personal asset? Good positive energy. Where would you like to be in 10 years? Working to guide people with thriving in their health and happiness, sharing what I have learned about the benefits of investing in your wellness and vitality. What is your best travel tip? Travel light, but take a water filter bottle or water filter pump and UV wand so you save money and don’t need to lug bottles of water back from the shops... and NO PLASTIC WASTE! : ) What’s the best thing you’ve spoilt yourself to at the end of a hard season? To go to a natural, beautiful and peaceful place to read, run and do yoga. What is the best internet resource that you use for your job? Super Yacht Luxury.com: they offer a great range of guest toiletries, with some really great natural options, their range of linens is outstanding too.! Do you think inter crew relationships should be forbidden or allowed? This is not really something that you can control... crew should conduct themselves in a professional manner whatever their relationship situation. What would be your ideal Charter? Plant-based nutrition and lots of yoga! How can we get hold of you for freelance work? rebecca@rebecca-lewis.com +34 693 855 864 FB: Yoga Rocks! Vivobarefoot Running Coach

Tomato Tart Tatin….Yummy! yachtgalleygoddess@gmail.com Bonjour mes cheris! Well, it’s that time of year again with the fabulous Monaco Boat Show looming and has brought me around to ruminating about our wonderful French cousins; their language of love, their culture and their gastronomie francaise. The world is indeed a more amazing place with their cuisine and the likes of bouillabaisse, boeuf bourguignon and brie...... And don’t all these words feel tremendous in the mouth? I could just eat them all up....... mille feuilles! roquefort! The luxurious eclair! ...... don’t they all just roll off the tongue? I think I could sing this food.....think big breasts and opera here........Coq au Vin, Camembert, creme bruleeeeeeeee!!! I just love it........ But, my darling peeps, this month, with the taste of french firmly upon my palette I have decided to ruthlessly defile some very classic french recipes. And, the world famous, but modest Tart Tatin is my first victim. Tart tatin is a very basic fille, a beautiful combination of apples, sugar, butter and pastry dough. A wondrous ménage a’ quatre. Legend has it that in the early 1800’s two sisters, Stephanie and Caroline took over running the L’Hotel Tatin after their father’s death. Stephanie was an accomplished cook but, bless her heart, was a bit of a plonker and one day

68

forgot to line the pastry dish with pastry thus caramelising the sugar, butter and apples. She obviously thought to herself “bloody hell, I’m really in the pooh now, I forgot the damn pastry”. Knowing that time is of the essence, she cunningly thought to herself, “hmmmmm - I’ll get Caz to pop another bottle of that cheap plonk on the table and they’ll be none the wiser”. Luckily for world cuisine and the hotel guests who saved themselves from a hangover, dear old Stephie inadvertently created a masterpiece, and a star was indeed born. So, dear readers, I’m going to happily ruin that for you and humbly present you with a Tart Tatin with a difference, a tart that stands on its own, a tart that puts it out there........as any self-respecting tart should....... Allons-y! Savoury Tomato Tart Tatin 500g plum tomatoes 2 teaspoons sugar 2 tablespoons olive oil (basil infused if possible) 1 extra tablespoon oil for drizzling 1 red onion, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs 2 sheets puff pastry 125g cream cheese 2 tablespoons basil pesto sauce 1egg, beaten Salt and freshly ground pepper Preheat your oven to 200C. Grease and line the base of a springform tin with baking paper - remember to oil sides.

Halve your tomatoes and chuck in a bowl with the sugar, half a teaspoon salt and the oil. Add onions to the bowl and toss. Give a good grind of pepper here - it needs a good grind, a tart that it is. Place tomatoes, cut side down on your base and fill up the spaces with the onions, shoving em in so that they are tightly packed. Then sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the tomatoes. In a small bowl mix the cream cheese and pesto together. Another good grind of pepper. Brush the egg over both sides of the puff pastry and fill centre with the cream cheese mixture. Fold up at the corners making a circle the size of the tin, press edges together and place on top of the tomatoes, tucking the in the sides to make a snug fit. Brush with beaten egg and pop into the oven for 25 minutes or when pastry is nicely puffed up and golden. Take your tart from the oven and, oh, so carefully flip tart onto a baking tray so that the tomatoes are on top and pastry on the bottom (all sounds vaguely rude, doesn’t it, all this talk on tarts, flipping and being on top and, bottoms). Increase the heat to 210C for another 8 - 10 minutes until tomatoes and onions start to caramelise. Serve on a beautiful slate platter with a sprinkle of fresh herbs such as thyme or basil. You will be a star. Mon dieu! I can hear all you good Francophiles shout, hands in the air, I can see you making very rude gestures at me with baguettes - c’est horrible! quel scandale!....

Laska paste 3 stalks lemongrass 1/2 red pepper, diced 4 hot chillies, de seeded and finely chopped 1/4 cup fresh coriander, chopped 1 teaspoon turmeric 2 thumbs ginger, peeled and cut into thin slices 1 tablespoon fish sauce 5 cloves garlic, crushed 2 spring onions, chopped 1 teaspoon paprika 1 tablespoon brown sugar 4 tablespoons oil Chuck all this in a blender and whizz to a paste Frites No one needs a recipe for chips.....purlease.... Mussels 1 kg fresh mussels - pop them in a bowl of fresh water for about 20 minutes before you need to cook them - this gives them time to flush out any sand. Scrub and de beard 1 can coconut milk 4 cups chicken or vege stock 1 carrot and 1 small red onion diced 1 cup Laska paste 1 tablespoon oil In a large saucepan heat the oil, throw in the onion, carrot and red pepper - cook, stirring for a few mins. Pop the Laska paste in gently stir it around. Pour in your stock, bring it to the boil then simmer for about 20 mins. Stir in coconut milk and simmer for a further 5 mins. Add your mussels and cook until they open. Discard any that haven’t. Serve these little jewels in a shallow bowl, spooning generous amounts of sauce. Top with your frites and fresh coriander. And - voila’! You know, the French are such a accomplished race, I do envy them, I really do they have it

all - a sense of style (you gotta admit girls, we all have had a secret passion for Pepe le Pew and even Gerard Depardieu). The French can look refreshingly chic even when dressed head to toe in an industrial grey garbage bag, the food is just so fabulous - n’est-ce pas? And when you can get them to speak english, its all - “cheri, you arrr a beauutiful woomannn... Everything starts fluttering here, Yes, I know....I am off to pop on my LBD (that’s french for - little black dress), adjust my, oh so very chic beret, toss my hair over my shoulder, buy a bottle of some awesome french rose that is just a bit of sunshine bursting in my mouth and go and find Charles Aznavour - we

have a hot date - je t’aime, je t’aime. Yes, he is still alive - and he’s all mine... And, on that note I will leave you with a very wise a French saying - la vie est trop courte pour boîre du mauvais vin. Or in laymans terms - Life is too short to drink bad wine. Eat well, laugh often, love abundantly. Bon appetit and au revoir, Galley Goddess xxxxx

NEWS 4 STEWS

Marc Fosh Hooked on Flavour A few years ago I was extremely pleased to be invited out along the Cantabrian coast to fish for fresh squid, or to be more precise “Txipirones” (baby squid). What I hadn’t bargained for is that squid fishing is a nocturnal activity and that we were going to set to sea in a small rowing boat called a ‘Txipironera’ about 2 metres long. Now I don’t normally suffer from seasickness, but as we rowed out to sea I must admit that I felt more than a little queasy and almost panic stricken about the size of the waves crashing into our tiny

boat. It was bitterly cold and after ten minutes it started to rain, prompting Juanito, my fishing partner, to lend me a thick, heavy raincoat to match the pair of trousers he gave me when I boarded his boat. Already I was wishing I’d never agreed to join jaunito and I was seriously regretting getting up a 4am in the morning because it was starting to feel like torture to me. Squid are surface swimmers and almost transparent and invisible to predators, they swim strongly by jetting water through their bodies. The fishermen shine lights on the surface of the water to attract them and cast out a thin line with tiny hooks attached every 20cms and dragged along the surface to catch the squid. As they reeled back in it was amazing to see how the squid can shoot ink and change colours so dramatically. Catching by hand using a hook and line is painstaking and requires much patience but improves the quality of the squid substantially over a net caught squid. The net caught one will have been crushed and bashed and will have sand

inside its skin and body. You therefore have to wash them thoroughly, removing the skin completely, which takes away both flavour and colour. Here in the local fish markets you should look out for “Calamar de Potera”. It is not a type of squid but one that is caught on a hook and therefore of a much higher quality. Obviously they are a little more expensive, but they are well worth it. In the village of Ses Salinas at Casa Manolo, Calamar de potera are grilled whole with the ink sac still left still inside. A little “sal de coco” and a drizzle of olive oil are added. Manolo then cuts the squid at the table and mixes it with the hot ink. If you haven’t tried it yet, you will not be disappointed as it is just delicious. Preparing fresh squid or cuttlefish is really a simple process and once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s child play. Pull the head and

tentacles away from the body. Skin the body, and pull out the backbone cartilage that looks like plastic. Cut the tentacles from the head just above the eye and wash both the body and tentacles thoroughly in cold running water. Just remember that there is basically just one basic rule when cooking with cephalopods- they need to be cooked quickly for a very short time or slowly for a very long time, anything in between and you end up with something very tough and unpleasant. Salad of Squid, New Potatoes, Rocket Leaves, Chorizo and Passion Fruit Oil Ingredients (serves 6): 3 fresh squid, cleaned and scored 18 new potatoes, boiled 18 thin slices of chorizo “iberico” 2 bunches of rocket leaves pulp of 6 passion fruits 150ml orange juice

150ml olive oil Sea salt and pepper To make the passion fruit oil: Place the passion fruit pulp and orange juice in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Simmer gently and reduce until it just starts to thicken. Pass through a fine sieve and whisk in the olive oil. Season to taste. Heat a grill pan. Cut the cooked potatoes in half lengthways. Toss them in a little olive oil and season. Place the potatoes on the grill and mark for 1-2 minutes. Grill the squid for 30 seconds on each side then add the chorizo slices to warm through. Place all the warm ingredients in a bowl, add a few tablespoons of passion fruit oil, rocket leaves and mix well. Drizzle with a little passion fruit oil and serve. Stir-Fried Squid with Red Chilli and Spring Onions Ingredients (serves 4): 750g squid ½ tsp black peppercorns ½ tsp Sichuan peppercorns ½ tsp coriander seeds 1tsp Maldon salt 1-2tbs olive oil 1 medium-hot red finger chilli, thinly sliced 3 spring onions, trimmed and sliced Clean the squid and then cut along one side of each pouch and open out flat. Score the inner side into a diamond pattern with the tip of a small, sharp knife, then cut into 5cm squares. Heat a heavy-based frying pan over a high heat,

add both the black and Sichuan peppercorns, coriander seeds and dry-roast for a few seconds, shaking the pan now and then until they are lightly toasted and start to smell aromatic. Tip them into a mortar, crush coarsely with the pestle, then stir in the salt. For the salad ¼ cucumber, peeled, halved and seeds removed 50g fresh bean sprouts 25g watercress sprigs, large stalks removed 2tsp dark soy sauce 2tsp roasted sesame oil ¼ tsp caster sugar juice of one lime A pinch of salt For the salad, cut the cucumber lengthways into short, thin strips. Toss in a bowl with the bean sprouts and watercress. Whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, lime juice and salt and add at the last minute. Heat a wok or frying pan over a high heat until smoking. Add half the oil and half the squid and stir-fry for two minutes until lightly coloured. Tip on to a plate and repeat with the remaining oil and squid. Return the first batch of squid to the wok and add one teaspoon of the salt and pepper mixture. Toss together for 10 seconds or so and then add the red chilli and spring onion. Mix well and divide between four plates, making four small, neat piles slightly off centre. Serve immediately with the cucumber salad.

Getting ready for refit has never been easier with Home & Yacht Finest Bed Linen. Major refits or just simple replenishments all bring stress and headaches. Now is a great time to get ahead and prepare for some of those tasks. So here are some ideas that might help. Start by noting how guests and owners actually use the yacht, how they like the bed made, and their towel preferences, do they need laundry and lingerie bags, what toiletries they prefer, etc. Also whilst on your rounds think about what needs updating? Does the current design fit in with the refit design? Is the design working with housekeeping? You may even have time to ask the owners about some design choice. Spending some time now and preparing a check list, could save you from some major headaches later and gain a great perspective of what may need to be done in refit and what areas just are not working.

NEWS 4 STEWS the red wines takes place, separated by grape variety, in French, Hungarian and American oak barrels. The maturation choice is dependent on the season, climate and of course the oenologist, the latter then deciding on the assembling of the cuvees. So the Xaloc red wine is then oak matured further approximately 18-24 months.

Martin Ward Wine Educators International facebook.com/ MallorcaWineTours facebook.com/WEILtd martin.ward@wine-educators.com Mallorcan Wines

In just over three acres of the best and intensively cultivated, mineral-rich soil, the vines sit on a beautiful hilly landscape, surrounded by the typical Mallorcan stone walls and colourful macchia bushes.

The “Xaloc” is not only the gentle southeast wind of Mallorca, which makes the hot summer months on the island so enjoyable but bodega XALOC is also a small but very good winery in Mallorca’s northeast; where the Tramuntana mountains slowly expire into tranquil hills close to our authentic and picturesque 15,000 population town of Pollensa.

‘Small is beautiful’, ‘quality rather than quantity’ from the beginning were the twin mottos of Christina. It is very best grapes without any other additives but nurtured and matured into good wine.

Winemaker Christina Schallock, yes the very same name in translation, has given the bodega the eponymous title and also has all the vines planted aligned in the direction of this wind!

The harvest begins in late August, anytime from now as I write in fact, for the white wine and lasts until mid-September for the red wine. The grapes are harvested exclusively by selective hand-picking.

The Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz varieties are grown for the red wine and for the white wines, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

The same high standards practised in the vineyards apply equally to the development of the wines in the bodega - modern technical expertise associated with proven traditional methods of winemaking. It is simply necessary to preserve the quality of the grapes. This is one of the reasons that only grapes from their own vineyards are used. The processing of the grapes takes place directly at the winery, so that the quality reducing effects of any transportation are removed. The latest technology in ‘inox’ stainless steel tanks provides a temperature-controlled fermentation lasting about 6 to 12 weeks. This way, the wines achieve and retain their natural fresh, fruit driven characteristics.

After fermentation for the white & rosado, and the development of the red, the wines are then bottled directly at the winery. The aim being to retain the wonderful aromas in full and for the wines importantly to then enjoy further maturation in the bottle prior to release. The annual harvest here produces around 15,000 bottles of wine, of which 12,000 is red and 3,000 white wine. The efforts of the Xaloc winemaker were quickly rewarded. Back in 2005, the Xaloc red wine received a silver medal at the international wine fair MUNDUSVini. And there was further success with awards in 2006 and 2007; then in 2010 two Golds at Mudus Vini and International Wine Grand Prix. There is also a very small amount of olive oil produced here from 300 recently planted trees. The wines: Xaloc Blanco; Xaloc Rosat & Monada Tinto

Helen has historically supplied fine wines from all around the world, so just last year began to work with and supply wines from French Riviera based wine experts and suppliers, Fine Wine Works. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Dr. Ken Prudhoe Club de Mar Medical Centre (+34) 639 949 125 drken@clubdemarmedical.com Doctor at Sea: First do no Harm In July we bought ten tons of river gravel to lay on the parking area at our home in Northumberland just south of the Scottish border. The gravel came from a bend in the North Tyne river valley where deposits have accumulated over millennia. The last Ice Age ground the local geology into gravel-sized pieces which reflect the rocks of the area and, in particular, the local sandstone which, not surprisingly, matches the stone of our cottage. The final effect is very nice. It looks good and the consummating pleasure is to drive onto it and hear the satisfying crunch. The very ancient stones of the past blend with the very modern tyres of the present in a way which makes ancient and modern fuse into a happy moment. Medicine is a bit like that. There is an old tradition in medicine that relies on a patient-centred approach that listens to the patient’s story before making a physical

examination to corroborate the clinical impression provided by the story. It is a very low-tech approach but, over a period of time, doctors get the hang of sorting the wood from the trees. It is the art of medicine and it may look easy – it may even look superficial and simplistic – and physical connection in examination can be far more crucial than imagined. I was surprised recently by a patient in late middle age who reflected that no doctor had actually tapped on his chest since he was a boy and the association with old-fashioned medicine struck a chord which seemed to matter more than anything I said.

I often relate an incident to the students on our courses given that there is not much scope to teach examination technique in a few days. Shortly after we were married, when my wife Rosemary was still a medical student and I had not started on the road, she presented me with a teaching scenario from earlier in the day. The consultant challenged the group of half a dozen or so students around the patient’s bed to spell out the most obvious significant feature of the patient. There were a number of imaginative suggestions but no one got it and eventually the consultant simply said “This patient is well”

It is very similar to the welltuned ear of an experienced car mechanic or yacht engineer listening to a faulty engine - but just because it looks easy does not mean it is easy. There is a similar tension in yachting between the intuitive behaviour of the experienced seafarer who gets it right without always being able to give chapter and verse and comparing this with a younger person who has successfully completed a plethora of courses but is working from the science of maritime theory – a blend of the two is clearly desirable.

This obvious but underestimated observation has served me well for many years. It is part of the art of medicine and sets the context for what is appropriate investigation and management of a person. A return to the art of medicine may have come of age and with doctors being encouraged to concentrate more on the patient and less on the laboratory results. The British Medical Journal (5 July 2014) published a paper “Can doctors reduce harmful medical overuse worldwide?” It emphasised a US initiative “Choosing Wisely” started in 2012 and spreading internationally. This helps specialists to agree interventions that should be used with more caution because they are often un-necessary and therefore wasteful and potentially harmful. One of the many interventions flagged as source of potentially harmful overdiagnosis and overtreatment is

Modern medicine runs the risk of an obsession with the science of medicine – but we did not have the gravel without the ancient grinding and we do not have the modern science without the ancient art, nor the well-taught seafarer without the skills honed in countless hours at sea.

The injunction “First do no harm” is attributed to Hippocrates but, whilst that may be in doubt, his Oath does refer repeatedly to the art of medicine. There is no doubt that fewer investigations will produce fewer false positives and less overtreatment and doctors will perhaps focus more on the person and less on the results of tests and fuse the best of the new with the old. Sensible fusion of maritime experience with essential maritime theory should also avoid harm to a world of adventure and elegance…and fun.

“Choosing Wisely” emphasises “quality, safety, waste, harm” and encourages the positives whilst minimising the negatives. Patients are encouraged to aske five questions: Do I really need this test or procedure? What are the risks? Are there simpler, safer options? What happens if I don’t do anything? How much will it cost?

At Club de Mar since 2007, Drs Ken & Rosemary Prudhoe provide a range of services to the yachting industry.

medical imaging soon after the onset of low back pain in the absence of alarming symptoms like leg weakness or loss of bladder control. Most people get better within about a month. Patients who have X-rays, CAT scans, MRI scans are more likely to have surgery while recovering in about the same time on average as patients who have no imaging. Taking in the bigger picture, Medicare estimates that 30,000 users die each year from harm associated with overly aggressive procedures – more does not mean better.

beforehand. This cold treatment activates a hormone called adiponectin which increases your body’s ability to mobilize stored body fat and use it as energy and increases your mitichondrial density and efficiency. Perhaps why following a cold shower your energy levels are higher.

Nutty “Oatmeal” cup chopped almonds (soaked overnight) 1 cup chopped macadamia nuts 1 banana or apple or 1 cup berries 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 cup coconut milk Mix ingredients in small pot or pulse using food processor. Warm on stove top on low heat (or eat cold) Add other nuts if preferred. Other spice variations can include nutmeg, mixed spice or cardamom.

Exercise: Your 5-15 minute fat blasting morning exercise blast- on deck. 1. Prisoner body weight squats (arse to grass) - getting your glutes as low as possible. Hands behind your head. 2. Push-ups (hold a plank when your arms get tired) drop your knees if you need to maintain good form. 3. Total body extension (from a plank position, jump your feet in, stand up and raise your arms above your head) - you can use a weight or a kettle bell if you have one and as you stand up raise this above your head but do not round your back. 4. Mountain climbers (from a forward plank position jump feet in and out as close to the insides of your hands as possible)

Sports Performance: Increase fat burning, build more muscle and have more energy.

Do each exercise for 1 minute or 30 reps. Rest 1 minute and repeat.

Increase testosterone and fat burning hormones by increasing your morning exposure to light. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Tracey Evans The Physiotherapy Centre tracey@mallorcaphysio.com (+34) 609 353 805 Knee Cartilage (Meniscal) Tears The knee is the biggest joint in the body and it has to put up with a lot of impact and torsion. It is comprised of 3 bones, the thigh (femur) shin bone (tibia) and the kneecap (patella). Unlike the hip and shoulder ball and socket joints, the knee does not have a lot of inherent stability and relies heavily on the quadracep and hamstring muscle groups for support. The femoral end of the articulation has 2 rounded surfaces called condyles, the inner condyle is slightly longer that the outer and this gives the knee its ability to twist slightly. It also means that the inner cartilage is the more vulnerable. The tibial end of the knee joint has only 2 shallow recesses which on their own offer very little stability. This is where the cartilages or menisci come in to

play. A meniscus is a ¾ moon shaped piece of cartilage with a thicker outer rim than it´s centre. This shape enhances the concavity and so gives the knee joint that bit more stability. There are two, one for the inner and one for the outer compartments and they also serve as sacrificials, bearing the brunt of the knees hard labours. Over time these cartilages can wear depending upon your activities. The cartilages (menisci) are particularly susceptible to twisting on a bent knee. This is why footballers frequently suffer meniscal tears. When they go for a kick their full weight is on the supporting leg which is bent and rotates as the kick is followed through. Other sports prone to this are squash and snow-boarding to name a few. The menisci cannot really be seen on an X Ray but any narrowing in the gap of the

inner and outer joint spaces between the femur and the tibia is a good indication that there may be damage. The only way to establish a meniscal tear is with a Magnetic Resonance Scan (MRI). There are many different types of tears of the meniscus and their names tell us where they are in the knee joint eg. Posterior Tag Tear, Transverse or Longitudinal Tear. If the results of your scan read Foreign Body, don´t panic! nothing has actually entered your knee as this is the description given when a piece of cartilage has broken off and is floating freely around in the knee joint. Many of us probably have existing tears and foreign bodies and not even know it as they are not producing any adverse symptoms. As I mentioned, the menisci are sacrificials and tiny slivers may shave off over our lifetime. It is only when these slivers or tears get caught in the mechanics of the joint that the symptoms begin. These symptoms include pain after exercise accompanied by swelling and/or locking of knee usually when standing from sitting or the knee may give way which is particularly noticeable when going downhill or descending stairs. If these problems persist physiotherapy can help the symptoms and frequently gentle manipulation of the knee can free up the mechanism. I have had patients who have had few if any problems since the original diagnosis and

subsequent treatment. However … The menisci, like a broken finger nail cannot repair themselves as they have no blood supply. If symptoms persist the best solution is surgery. Your surgeon will likely choose to perform an Arthroscopy which is keyhole. There are normally two small incisions, one for the camera and one for the tools. The surgeon will take away the tag tear and generally “hoover up” the foreign bodies in the joint space. There is usually an overnight stay in hospital although it can be done as day surgery. The patient will wake up to a think compression bandage from mid thigh to calf which is applied to help any post operative swelling. This is removed before discharge from hospital. Crutches will be necessary for walking as it is not advisable to fully weight bear during the first week as any irritation will only delay recovery. At this stage you should attend for physiotherapy straight away for treatment to speed up the healing process and to assess when you can increase the weight bearing walking through to running again. Arthroscopic surgery is a very successful solution for cartilage tears. Any post-operative complications and delayed recovery are often caused by the patient weight bearing too early so do check with your physio before dropping the crutches.

The Clinic will function as an international reference centre for the latest available technology and offers correction of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism as well as presbiopia correction and cataract surgery using the latest Premium lens generation. Everybody knows how beneficial it is not to depend on glasses or contact lenses during our work. Contacts can be a nightmare in the middle of the night navigating. “I have lasered many patients from the professional yachting community as well as owners here in Mallorca, and I am proud to offer them know the best laser technology from Germany in Andorra”. Tax advantages make it possible, to invest into this technology and offer it at a competitive price. The clinic is equipped with

the laser SCHWIND Amaris 1050, being the fastest laser in the world. It corrects 1 diopter in only 1,4 seconds and with a precision of 1/1000 millimeter. The laser possesses an extremely sensitive eyetracking system in 7 different dimensions, which controls eye movement 1050 times per second making sure that in all moments during the treatment the eye is perfectly alienated. A Lasik intervention at this quality level is considered as being one of the safest and most precise surgery in medicine. High-Tec Lasik is safer than wearing contacts Differences between a conventional Lasik treatment and a last-generation laser are significant. Quality and technology will allow very personalized treatments resulting in optimal quality of vision and safety. Personal professional experience of the Clinic`s team and the technology only very few clinics can offer. The additional use of the Femtosecond laser during the first step of surgery eliminates the necessity of using a blade. Bladeless Femtosecond laser correction guarantees highest precision and safety. As well it is possible to combine it with other interventions to correct presbyopia, so that patients don’t have to rely always on their reading glasses. Premium Intraocular lenses, Cataract and Femtophaco For all patients not being Lasik candidates nowadays a wide

range of special intraocular lenses exist. Ultimate diagnostic technology is necessary to calculate the best lens for every patient so that they can be especially manufactured for him. Special refractive lenses are the ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens), which can correct even very high refractive errors maintaining an excellent HD vision. So-called Premium intraocular lenses with added functionalities correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. If you combine these lenses with Femtophaco you achieve the most precise, safest surgery available today taking advantage of the soft Femtolaser action. The result: Quality of vision which hasn`t been possible before. Ask the expert: Dr. Ludger Hanneken Q: VallmedicVision is one of the most advanced centers for refractive and cataract surgery with a Femtophaco. Why did you decide to position your clinic in the Premium sector? A: Vision is our most important sensual organ. The eye receives about 80 % of the body’s sensitive information. For me it is just an obligation to use only the best technology available for my patients in order to achieve highest level of satisfaction. I never wanted to make compromises. Q: Which differences exist between different eyecenters? What is special at

VallmedicVision? A: The technology and the people: to use the best technology and combine it with an experienced staff is for us the base for success. We don´t want to reduce quality and can therefore offer a quality which is unrivaled in our region here in Europe. Q: What are the advantages for patients? A: Thanks to our modern technology we are able to perform higher corrections than in other centers. Depending on the thickness of the cornea we can correct up to – 12 diopters of myopia, + 6 diopters of hyperopia, and up to – 6 diopters of astigmatism. Our laser has a unique quality and safety. Many patients can see after a treatment better than ever before. Q: Why have you chosen Andorra for this new centre? A: Andorra offers quite unique advantages for this kind of technology and it is possible to offer this top-quality to everybody at competitive prices. We can realize here our goal to offer the best Lasik and Cataract surgery affordable for everybody. We offer transfer from Barcelona or Toulouse to Andorra and already many international patients have decided to come here for treatment. The plus in technology is just convincing. Finally, it is a country with a beautiful nature that invites to combine a small intervention with some days of vacation.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

RESTAURANT REVIEW Deliciosa Marta (+34) 871 959 335 Calle Teodor LLorente, 4 deliciosamartamallorca.com I had recently heard a whisper about this very traditional Spanish restaurant with a famous chef which made me search it out and give it a try. The whisper came from a very reliable foody source!

Foie Gras with Onion Marmalade

Lamb Shoulder

To say we were not to be disappointed would be a huge understatement. This was some of the finest food I have ever tasted, and cooked to perfection. It came as no surprise to me that many worldwide celebrities come and eat in Marta’s superb restaurant, and that she is also regularly invited to cook in the homes of some very, very famous people. A section of her walls are adorned with photographs of some of her famous clients such as the actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin of Coldplay fame. This place really is a hidden gem, and one to which we will definitely be returning soon. From the simple décor through to great background music, Marta seems to have everything just right. Rather than stick to the menu, Marta offered to make us a selection of her recommendations and enjoy a tasting menu, which we were happy to do!!

Hake Escalibada

To begin, we had a small glass of homemade Gaspacho, which was both tasty and refreshing, followed by a smoked sardine fillet with salad served on

toasted bread which was heavenly. Next came a dish whose taste will live with me for a very long time! Warm Foie Gras served with a homemade onion marmalade and super thin toasted slices. It was simply divine! Following this came squid fried in virgin olive oil, garlic and salt. Now, normally this is not a dish I would choose, nor Helen, my wife, but I have to say it was wonderful, nothing like I have ever had before. The squid just melted in your mouth leaving a lovely after taste. Our main courses were a Lamb shoulder, slow cooked with herbs and a Hake Escalibada, with a pepper, onion and aubergine sauce and an alioli mousseline topping. Yummy!! This was all washed down with a bottle of Mallorcan Sió, my favourite Mallorcan Red. By this stage we were well and truly stuffed, but Marta insisted we had some of her homemade desserts, consisting of a chocolate cake with homemade vanilla ice cream, and a Carrot cake with a cream cheese filling. Both were gorgeous, but being full up we probably didn’t appreciate them as much as we should have done! Marta, is a wonderful cook, no doubt and I can’t wait for our next visit, as she says winter is her best time when she specialises in an array of soups and stews from her home city of Madrid. Roll on winter!

STRAIGHT TALK ON THE DOSH the maximum amount of cash sloshing about in the economy. It hasn’t worked. The banks are not lending, and who can blame them. They rightly copped the lion’s share of the blame for the financial crash for lending to people who didn’t have any money, we can hardly criticise them for not doing it now.

is slashed and it admits it is not likely to come close to it’s debt reduction targets.

Print, or be damned I have some good news and some bad news. The Spanish economy is doing a little better than expected. The economy is nudging up a smidgen boosted by growth in exports, while unemployment is creeping down, although it does remain scandalously, cripplingly high at nearly 25%. The bad news is that the Eurozone’s big hitters are struggling. Downturns in demand across the bloc have led the mighty German economy, Europe’s backstop, into a 0.2% contraction as demand for manufactured goods slumps and cheaper competition from the Far East ups its offering. Italy has officially dipped back into recession for the third time as its national debt climbs over €2 trillion, and the French economy begins to face the reality of serious economic woes as their growth forecast

Meanwhile prices for goods continue to stagnate as deflation across the Eurozone, and in Spain in particular looks like a real possibility. The situation is likely to worsen imminently as sanctions and counter sanctions against Russia for its aggression in Ukraine hit the German and Italian economies in particular. The problem is that while sectors of the economy have been recovering, the population as a whole are still cash poor, or if they have any they are not inclined to spend much of it. If people aren’t spending, any recovery you may generate is likely to be short lived. The ECB like many economies have been using the standard box of tricks for dealing with this. austerity, and cutting interest rates to virtually zero, or even minus numbers in order to ensure that the people are discouraged from saving and encouraged to borrow by cheap loans to get

There is another tool that is available in these desperate times, namely Quantitative Easing, QE. printing money to you and I. Basically the central bank buys its own bonds with money it has created, sending new money into the economy. In the US and UK this has been tried on a few occasions and has had the desired effect more or less as their economies are showing positive signs of life. It’s not the same as a ‘real’ recovery, but better than the alternative. The catch is...and there always seems to be one when we talk about the Eurozone, that it is isn’t quite so easy when

you have one central bank, the ECB, and 18 different countries all issuing bonds. Whose bonds does it buy? EU rules expressly forbid the ‘propping up’ of one or more member states, buying Spanish or Italian bonds for instance instead of French or German ones would constitute that. So again we have a bureaucratic nightmare. The Eurozone is running out of options, but urgent action is needed. More or less everyone agrees that QE is exactly what is needed, and many leading experts say it is looking very likely for 2015, but the EU will have to reinvent its own rules to accommodate what is likely to be a cobbled together half-cocked version of it implemented too late. Again indecision has paralysed the decision makers for far too long and they are already lagging behind other developed nations in the race out of the recession, held back by tethers of their own design.

TAX AND LEGAL MATTERS f) Improvement of the environmental protection of the sea ground and measures against maritime pollution and illegal immigration.

Carlos Espinosa Solicitor and Tax Adviser (+34) 627 41 32 01 carlos.espinosa@iurisnautic.com Charter in the New Maritime Navigation Law Finally, last 24th of July and after more than 13 years of legislative works - and different intents - the final draft of the Maritime Navigation Act, (Ley 14/2014, de 24 de julio, de Navegación Marítima) has been published after being approved by the Parliament.

a) A more clear distinction and definition of boat (“emabracación”) and vessel (“Buque) depending LOA is over 24 m or less than that if the vessel has not a long deck.

c) A more detailed list of the different contract applicable to the maritime navigation, including for the first time - and this is particularly important for our industry – the regulation contract of the hire of pleasure crafts “contrato de arrendamiento naútico” , that is charter, and the contract for management “contrato de gestión naval”. d) Regulation of the conditions of ship building e) New regulation of the purchase and sale of vessels

The Law will enter in force two months after its publication on the 24th of September 2014.

b) The liabilities of all the agents involved in the maritime traffic

elecMal tric lorc al p a s, artnbest er

This new Law will contribute to modernize the old applicable legislation from the nineteenth century included in our Commercial Code and to integrate in our legislation international treaties applicable to the different aspects of the Maritime and Admiralty Law. Since 1885 something has change in our seas and overseas but not our main Maritime and Admiralty legal corpus. In any case, the new scenario will bring considerable progress

and improvements with the following matters in Public and Private Law:

One of the more relevant aspects is that for the very first time the Spanish legislation includes a regulation for the contract of hire of pleasure crafts “contrato de arrendamiento naútico” , that is, the typical charter contract, as a specific and autonomous legal figure. Up to now agents, brokers and customers used any of the international standard charter model contracts (like for example the MYBA) that in several occasions did not match our Spanish legislation on rentals of goods. The Law

clarifies the most important aspects of the nautical charter such as the possibility of bare boat or charter with crew – specifying in each cases the rights and obligations of the parties –, the obligations of third parties insurance, the obligation to declare damages by the charterer, the consequences of the delay in the delivery, and the prescriptions of the actions. Due to its importance we will come back to these matters in following articles.

PRO RACING NEWS

Justin Chisholm Communications Officer Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing

Club to send the fleet round anticlockwise rather than the planned west-about course.

If this month’s column sounds a little breathless it’s because I’m writing it having just returned from a record-breaking race aboard Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s Volvo Ocean 65 Azzam. As a sailing journalist I always jump at any opportunity to sail with a pro racing crew, but when the chance came up to fill in as ADOR’s on board reporter for the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, I grabbed it with both hands. The course for the RBIR is simple: an 1800 mile lap of the British Isles starting from Cowes, taking in Muckle Flugga in the Shetlands (at 60 degrees it is further north than Cape Horn is south) and the Scilly Isles in the south. The arrival shortly before the scheduled start of the vestiges of Hurricane Bertha delayed the race by a day and forced the Royal Ocean Racing

This was the first time five VOR teams had lined up against each other and that fact added to the atmosphere of keen anticipation on board Azzam on the morning of the start. Despite the postponement, the wind was still over 20 knots and we knew we were in for a fast blast out of the Solent and into the English Channel.

As we exited the confines of the Solent a very short time later (happily ahead of all our VOR rivals) the breeze had jumped to over 30 knots and we were screeching along the English south coast in a huge cloud of spray at 25 knots and more. Unbelievable as it may seem, we maintained our breakneck pace past Dover and around the southeastern tip of the UK and it continued unabated for the entire length of the North Sea.

In fact, we didn’t drop below 20 knots of boatspeed until were on final approach to Muckle Flugga at the top of Scotland on Tuesday evening - just 34 hours after leaving Cowes. Even then the respite was for just an hour or so before a 30knot northwesterly kicked in to send us hurtling off down the west coast of Scotland towards Ireland.

Sure enough, the moment we unfurled our huge headsail in the final seconds to the start gun Azzam sprang to life and our speed leapt immediately into the high teens as we powered across the line.

Constant speeds of 25 – 30 knots

A Wet Ride!

Our relentless pace continued undiminished until on the early afternoon of our third day at sea we passed within a few miles of Fastnet Rock on the southern tip of Ireland and gybed towards Bishop Rock on the Scilly Isles. ADOR skipper, British double Olympic silver medallist Ian Walker was as surprised as anyone by our progress. “It’s incredible,” he said with a huge grin. “We have got to the Fastnet Rock via the top of Scotland in just over three days.

That’s quicker than some boats get straight there in the Fastnet Race.” With less than 300 miles to go we had built a 60-mile lead over the next monohull and our focus switched on to how much we could potentially break the race record set by the French VOR team Groupama of five days and 21 hours. Although light winds and strong tides slowed us down on the final afternoon, we eventually crossed the finish line off the Royal Yacht Squadron in an elapsed time of four days, 13 hours, 10 minutes, 28 seconds, smashing the race record by well over a day. It was an experience I don’t think I will never ever forget and I now know what life is really like aboard a VO65 in the heat of battle and have a new appreciation for just how tough and talented the sailors who race these yachts have to be.
