Foreword Eindhoven is one of the most international cities in the Netherlands. And what we’ve known for years has now finally become apparent to the rest of the world. Eindhoven is no longer a Dutch backwater, but rather one of the most inventive cities in Europe. All the factory complexes that were abandoned by electronics giant Philips were seen as eyesores until they were finally repurposed by this once sleepy town of roughly 220,000 inhabitants. Most of these buildings have recently been transformed into vibrant cultural and entrepreneurial centres not to mention pop-up restaurants and offices for graduates of Eindhoven’s Design Academy. These creative spaces are scattered across the city, so you’re never far away from an example of the city’s new-found dynamism. You’ll also discover a city that’s full of inviting culinary institutions not to mention incredible nightlife from cheap student bars to trendy cocktail lounges and clubs. Read this very first edition of Eindhoven In Your Pocket and explore the city as if you were a local.

This issue’s cover photo features the city’s iconic Philips Museum, a great place to spend time for technology buffs of all ages. Although the cynical among us could view this museum located in the original Philips factory from 1891 as pure company propaganda, we have to admit that this modern space gives an interesting overview of this multinational giant, which has played such a crucial role in Eindhoven’s history.

Arriving & Getting Around Eindhoven has its own airport and a central train station, so it’s really quite simple to get to the city.

TOURIST INFORMATION

BY BUS

THIS IS EINDHOVEN BRANDSTORE This centrally located information centre is a good place to get brochures, guides or personal advice from a staff member. They can recommend excursions, help you purchase concert tickets and offer lots of other practical services. Staff can also help with Eindhoven’s public transport system and some souvenirs are also available, like a free copy of this guide.QB‑1, Station‑ splein 17, tel. 0900 112 23 63, www.thisiseindhoven. nl. Open 09:00 - 18:00, Mon 12:00 - 18:00, Sat 10:00 - 17:00. Closed Sun. PTJAUW

FLIXBUS FlixBus is a German low cost bus operator with over 30,000 daily connections in Europe including some Dutch cities. From Eindhoven you can travel to 11 different cities (Apeldoorn, Enschede, Hengelo and Groningen in the Netherlands; Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover, and Munich in Germany; and Antwerp and Brussels in Belgium). Although the company claims to provide free wi-fi and electrical sockets aboard every bus, this was not the case when we went to press in early 2016.QStationsweg 1, www.flixbus.com.

BY PLANE EINDHOVEN AIRPORT Despite its modern appearance and grand plans, Eindhoven Airport is still quite small so it’s impossible to get lost, although on a yearly base almost 4 million passengers use this terminal. Currently more than 70 cities, available from eight different airlines, can be visited. There are a handful of shops for bulbs, books and groceries (Albert Heijn) as well as a Starbucks and two branches of Farm Coffee. Short-term parking is available only steps away from the entrance and larger garages can be found nearby for longer stays. With the longest landing strip in the Netherlands, its easy to understand why this airport is still growing. Unfortunately their is no train station (yet), although plans are made to build one before 2028. Getting to town: You can take local bus Nr. 400 (20 minutes/€2.16, first bus at 06:07, last one at 19:37, busses leave every 15 minutes) or 401 (20 minutes/€2.16, first bus at 05:38, last one at 22:39, busses leave every 15 minutes) to the Eindhoven train station and then continue on to destinations near and far. The Airexpress bus is another option. Buses depart for Utrecht (€30 return/€17 single; transferium Westraven) and Amsterdam (€40 return/€24 single; Prins Hendrikkade) 60 times each week up to nine times per day. The bus stop is right in front of the terminal. For more information visit www.airexpressbus.com or call tel. (+31) 402 55 80 90.QG‑9, Luchthavenweg 25, tel. 0900 95 05, www. eindhovenairport.nl. PTAULGW

BY TRAIN Eindhoven’s Central Station isn’t exactly one of the city’s most striking buildings, but more than 100,000 passengers use this major transport hub each day. If you look closely you see that the building resembles a radio, thus referring to the fact that electronics giant Philips was for a long time dominating life in Eindhoven. It’s currently undergoing major renovations that should be finished in 2016. You’ll arrive at one of eight platforms and then simply walk downstairs into the central hallway, which leads to the bus station and the centre of town. A GWK Travelex (www.gwktravelex.nl; open 08:00 20:00) currency exchange and an ATM are available in the hallway. For toilets that cost €0.50 you have to go up to the exit near the buses. Luggage storage lockers can be found in the middle of the station near platforms 3 and 4, but you can only pay with a credit card. A ticket good for 24 hours will be printed. When you want to remove your luggage just place the ticket into the slot and the door of your locker will automatically open. For tourist information we recommend you exit the building on the city centre side and walk a bit to the right where the official VVV tourist information centre (see Tourist information) is located. Getting to town: You are in the very centre of town and all of Eindhoven lays before you. Hotels are scattered throughout the city. If you plan on using public transport frequently in Eindhoven it might be worth buying an extended ticket.

TAXIS CIBATAX This reliable company can be contacted 24 hours a day. Expect clean cars and decent drivers.QE‑6, Thorvaldsen‑ laan 12, tel. (+31) 402 44 33 33, www.cibatax.nl. Open 24hrs.

Eindhoven Basics

Read on and find out why the Dutch allow its citizens to smoke joints, but not to operate a bicycle while intoxicated. Plenty of other funny facts about Holland are available here.

ALCOHOL Eindhoven has hundreds of cafés and restaurants so you’re never far from a glass of wine or a pint of beer. Heineken and Bavaria are the two most popular beers on offer at most places in the inner city. Other tasty brews include Grolsch, Hertog Jan, Amstel and the Belgian Jupiler. Beer is served everywhere, especially Belgian brews, but you must be able to prove that you’re at least 18 years old to drink beer, wine or spirits. If you look too young you’ll be carded, so always bring identification.

CYCLING Holland is one of the smaller countries in the world, but since it’s flat as a pancake it’s attractive to cyclists. Add to this an unbelievable amount of zigzagging cycling paths and you’ll see why the Dutch love cycling so much no matter what the weather conditions are outsise. Although cycling in the bigger cities like Amsterdam can be a dangerous endeavour, this isn’t the case in Eindhoven. Rent a bike and discover the city on two wheels.

DRUGS It comes as no surprise that in many places in the Netherlands you’re allowed to buy and smoke marijuana and other soft drugs. And you may have also heard that dealing or possessing hard drugs is forbidden. You can be arrested for it and punishments are no laughing matter. Soft drugs are sold exclusively at so-called coffeeshops so don’t buy them on the streets. These products have often been adulterated with unknown rubbish. Again, dealing is forbidden. Use your head and limit yourself to the coffeeshops to get high responsibly.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS In case of an emergency, call 112. This number will connect you to the emergency centre that will put you through to the local police, ambulance or fire department.

Eindhoven Basics LANGUAGE Dutch is an Indo-European Germanic language that is mostly spoken in the Netherlands, Flanders and Suriname (South America). It is closely connected to the Low German dialects which by now have largely been flooded by official German. Most Dutch have a more than healthy command of the English language. Many will also be adept at other European languages with German being the most common second language. Mastering the Dutch language can be a terrifying ordeal, but learning a few key phrases will make things easier.

MONEY The Netherlands officially adopted the euro in 2002. One euro contains 100 euro cents. There are coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 euro cents, and also of 1 and 2 euro. Bank notes are available with the following values: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500. Although a collection of €200 and €500 bills in your wallet might make you feel like Bill Gates, bear in mind that they’re almost never accepted in shops or restaurants.

PHONE NUMBERS All In Your Pocket guides in its European publishing empire list country codes before all telephone numbers. The Dutch country code is (+31), but of course, you only have to use this if you’re dialling from abroad. If you’re already in the Netherlands and want to call one of the numbers in this guide, just ignore the (+31) prefix and dial the ten-digit number.

SMOKING Since the introduction of the ban on smoking in public places on 1 July 2008, smoking has become a lot less common. Today you can have a wild night out and come home without your hair and your clothes reeking of cigarette smoke. However, thanks to unclear rules you may suddenly find yourself in a pub where people are allowed to smoke. This is usually in pubs with a single staff member: the boss. Or you may find yourself in a pub that flouts the ban on smoking. This will not have any consequences for you. If you light a cigarette in a pub and the manager tolerates this, then the manager will receive a fine upon inspection.

Culture & Events

Here are some of Eindhoven’s cultural hotspots.

CINEMAS JT BIOSCOOP Although the old JT has been showing movies since 1932, this Eindhoven cinema is the latest addition to the local film scene. CONCERT HALLS & THEATRES DYNAMO Dynamo began in 1982 as a place where different subcultures could mingle including both urban and metal (and not only on stage, as the toilets and bar are actually made mostly of metal). Since then it has developed into a concert venue where its two halls are filled with rock, dance and urban music events. This modern, centrally located youth centre is the undisputed beating heart of Eindhoven’s youth culture and the largest of its kind in the Netherlands. In addition to music, sports, art and dance are also covered at Eindhoven’s vibrant epicentre, where different youth cultures come together to create limitless possibilities for everyone.QB‑2, Catharinaplein 21, tel. Although Paris likes to call itself the City of Light, only one European city has the honour of truly claiming this title and that city is Eindhoven. Long before the French began bandying about the phrase ‘Le Ville Lumière’, Eindhoven had already been associated with the moniker. Although most people think that the nickname is related to Philips and the invention of light bulbs in 1891, it’s actually derived from the so-called Lucifer industry. Matches can trace their origins as far back as 577 AD, but the first factory in the Netherlands dedicated to the production of these flammable necessities only opened in Eindhoven in 1870. Soon after the Dutch began calling it City of Light, or Lichtstad. Today Eindhoven is also renowned for its light-themed event known as Glow (see below).

SPECIAL EVENTS CARNIVAL (LAMPEGAT) A proud southern tradition, Carnival looks a bit like Halloween, but it’s steeped in history. Between Saturday and Tuesday (in either February or March) most hotels, bars and clubs have carnival parties where guests, most of whom are in fancy dress, get into the spirit of ‘turning the world upside down’ or whatever that means. Try to catch at least one parade or public street party and enjoy the ‘polonaise’ dance. During these crazy days, Eindhoven ceases to exist and becomes ‘Lampegat’ (Lamp City). DUTCH DESIGN WEEK Want to know what the smart solutions, inventive designs and trends of tomorrow are? Visit the annual Dutch Design Week (DDW) where all the trends o tomorrow can be witnessed today. This internationally renowned nine-day event in October draws an average crowd of 250,000 people who visit more than 400 events/exhibitions at almost 80 locations throughout Eindhoven. Most events are free, but some require tickets. Don’t miss the annual exhibition by the graduates of Design Academy Eindhoven, where Holland’s most talented and hottest new designers show off their masterpieces.Qtel. (+31) 402 96 11 50, www.ddw.nl. EXTREMA OUTDOOR (XO) Around since 1992, Extrema Outdoor offers a broad spectrum of electronic music and impressive decorations combined with theatrical performances and other shows. July 9, 2016 will mark the 21st anniversary of the dance festival at the Aquabest beach on the northern outskirts of Eindhoven. A few years ago crowd pleasers included an interactive dance floor and the so-called ‘smallest disco in the world’.QG‑9, Aquabest, tel. (+31) 887 71 77 00, xofestival. nl. Admission: €50, comfort tickets €80. LBKX facebook.com/eindhoveninyourpocket

GLOW No other city in the Netherlands has closer ties with light than Eindhoven. Ever since Philips invented the light bulb in 1891, the city has grown to become the technological metropolis for which it’s now so rightly famous. Since 2006, Eindhoven has been transformed during the month of November when it hosts the Glow illumination art festival. More than 50 artists from around the globe entertain and inspire crowds with light installations, animations, sculptures and performances, most of which are projected on iconic buildings in and around the city centre. Buildings, streets, warehouses, squares and alleys in the public space are part of the four kilometre long art route. Last year more than 650,000 visitors came to walk, so be prepared to cue.Qwww.gloweindhoven.nl.

De Bergen

Photo of De Bergen by Nick Bookelaar

One of Eindhoven’s best kept secrets is also one of the city’s oldest districts, a trendy neighbourhood known simply as De Bergen. Although it only consists of four small streets (Grote Berg, Kleine Berg, Bergstraat and Willemstraat) and one cosy square (Wilhelminaplein), there’s so much to see and do here that you’ll be tempted to browse through its quirky, yet fashionable shops and to linger in its inviting cafés for hours and hours. While World War II has sadly left reminders of its destruction all over town, De Bergen luckily escaped the carnage that raged across much of the Netherlands. Today its characteristic and picturesque buildings host a wide range of establishments including bars, boutiques,

restaurants, galleries and other venues guaranteed to grab your attention. Its unusually narrow streets are filled from sunrise to sunset with a lively atmosphere, but we have to admit that its nearly Mediterranean ambience is best experienced at night when musicians and boisterous revellers replace the neighbourhood’s shoppers. This tiny district is also home to some of the prettiest gardens in the Old Town, so if you’re looking for a great place to have lunch or dinner in a trendy setting, head down to De Bergen. And on a final note, you may be curious as to why it was named De Bergen (The Mountains). This refers to its medieval past when this part of town was built on sandy hills that used to be so typical of the area.

Enjoying De Bergen’s wonderful ambience

De Bergen FOOD & DRINK BERLIN BAR 5611 EINDHOVEN It’s trendy and stylish, but still Berlin bar is a pleasant exception to the rule that cocktail bars have to be pretentious and expensive. This unique watering hole has attitude and is a colourful mix of modern and trendy styles. The place is often packed, but luckily the excellent cocktails are poured by professionals who really know what they’re doing and the delicious gin cocktails drinks had us contemplating a life without beer if only for a millisecond. .QA‑3, Kleine Berg 40, tel. PJAEG DE KREEFTENBAR This is the only restaurant in Eindhoven dedicated to the lobster. Tiny, intimate Kreeftenbar makes this typically expensive sea creature affordable for all budgets. The gratin lobster with melted cheese and spinach on top seemed to be the most memorable from the menu. This is also one of the better places in Eindhoven to order sushi, albeit with lobster. The friendly, informal staff is yet another bonus and takeaway is also available.QA‑3, Kleine Berg 21, tel. (+31) 402 36 44 40, www.kreeftenbar.nl. Open 12:00 - 22:00, Fri, Sat, Sun 12:00 - 23:00. TJALGBKXSW DRINKERS PUB Since Drinkers Pub is open every day of the week, you really don’t have an excuse to drink bad beer. The latest addition to Eindhoven’s bar scene serves an astonishing 700 beers in bottles, but we’ll have to take their word for it as we lost count during one of our numerous tasting sessions at this charming pub. While most of the prices fall within the usual range for what the Dutch call ‘special beers’, the Scottish-made Tactical Nuclear Penguin will set you back a tidy sum. Numerous local and regional brews can also be enjoyed here and the industrial décor is stylish, yet warm. Another 20 brews are available on draught.QB‑3, Kerkstraat 11, tel. PJAUEGXW IN DEN BERGSCHE TUIN For over a decade In den Bergsche Tuin has been one of the most affordable restaurants in Eindhoven’s De Bergen district, one of our favourite neighbourhoods. The cosy interior is reason enough to visit this romantic eatery, but if the weather cooperates then sit outside in the huge garden with seating for up to 80 people. Examine the witty menu that lists dozens of Dutch starters and main courses, but don’t forget to try the house speciality for dessert - delicious cheesecake. Wash it all down with one of the 125 local and international beers on draught. QB‑3, Grote Berg 17-19-21, tel. (+31) 402 43 77 27, www. indenbergschetuin.nl. Open 17:00 - 22:30, Sun 17:00 21:30. Incredible interior at De Vooruitgang

With nearly 300 restaurants to choose from, Eindhoven has no shortage of venues to enjoy a good meal. While dining out in the Netherlands is generally expensive (some would say overpriced), Eindhoven has thousands of students who help keep local prices in check.

ASIAN UMAMI BY HAN Han Ji is a famous name in the Dutch restaurant scene and you’ll find a handful of these restaurants throughout the Netherlands, but Umami by Jan is all about the ‘shared dining’ experience. Small fusion courses of Asian/ French origin are served in a modern and stylish setting, which includes a small terrace up front. Unfortunately, this small street is quite popular with motorists too, so you shouldn’t expect much peace or quiet outside. Inside we recommend dishes like panko scallops, seabass sashimi or Bangkok prawns, which are all cooked to perfection. The management should, however, spend some more time training its lacklustre staff and the toilets could use some major improvement. The steep prices for water also caught us unawares.QA‑3, Kleine Berg 57H, tel. (+31) 402 37 00 36, www.umami-restaurant.com. Open 17:00 - 22:00. Closed Mon. ZJAGBKX

BARBECUE & RIBS DE VOORUITGANG What do mirrors from the Czech Republic, tiles from New York and Barcelona, Persian carpets and old Dutch furniture have in common? They all blend together perfectly to create one of Eindhoven’s best hangouts. De Vooruitgang is actually an old local institution which burned to the ground a few years ago. Instead of creating an artificial version of the past, the owners decided to make something completely new and the result is a tasteful combination of modern and industrial styles. In short, a visit to this trendy bar/restaurant is always a feast for the senses, especially the eyes.QB‑2, Markt 11, tel. (+31) 402 43 39 95, de-vooruitgang.nl. Open 10:00 - 02:00, Mon, Sun 11:00 - 01:00, Fri, Sat 10:00 - 03:00. PTJAUL GBKXW RIBS FACTORY If you’re in the mood to murder a big chunk of meat, the Eindhoven outlet of the Ribs Factory is a good place to start. Vegetarians can stop reading right now. Mouthwatering servings of tender ribs come slathered in a number of different sauces including the juicy Jack Daniels plate, which is an absolute classic. Cutlery is just for show as the meat is so well-cooked that it basically falls of the bone while you watch it. Ribs Factory also has burgers and big steaks, but the superb ribs are the real stars of the show. The interior is a bit generic, but the staff makes up for this shortcoming by serving meals in high gear with a genuine smile. Keep an eye out for daily specials, which are considerably cheaper than the meals on the menu.QB‑3, Kerkstraat 14, tel. (+31) 402 36 46 16, www.ribsfactory.nl. Open 17:00 23:00. JA K W

Vegetarians need not worry as the cassava and Portobello burger are full of tasty, healthy ingredients that didn’t moo before they reached your plate. Naturally, a side of fries should accompany your burger and we strongly recommend the truffle mayonnaise, which goes quite well with a Belgian Vedett brew.QB‑3, Kerkstraat 5, tel. Nine different types of homemade ‘ball’ snacks (deep-fried mystery meat in batter) are available in this former courthouse from mild lamb and spicy Indonesian to tasty game meat. Even vegetarians will find something to eat here and the ‘vega ball’ is great value for money, too. INDIAN TAJ-MAHAL India is one of the largest countries in the world and is blessed with an amazing variety of people and food. Unfortunately, this restaurant has much more to complain about than its boring, predictable name. The standard menu is woefully overpriced and even the simplest vegetarian dishes somehow bear little resemblance to their original recipes. Perhaps the Bangladeshi staff should have stuck to their own cuisine and left the Indian dishes to the experts. If you’re looking for mediocre Asian food with an underwhelming Dutch twist, Taj-Mahal is the place to go.QC‑3, Geldropseweg 27-29, tel. (+31) 402 11 94 40, www. tajmahal-eindhoven.nl. INDONESIAN INDONESIA Although Indonesia is by far the largest Muslim country in the world, the walls of the upper floors of this centrally located restaurant are decorated with Buddhas. Unfortunately, that’s not the only anomaly we discovered here. While Indonesian cuisine usually boasts a great variety of spices and ingredients, this Indonesia has strayed far from the roots of this exotic and flavourful style of cooking. That said, if you’re looking for a cheap way to fill your stomach, this a good place to strap on the feed bag and the locals seem to agree as it’s nearly always full of thrifty Dutchmen. EFFENAAR Although having dinner in a venue that regularly hosts concerts doesn’t usually sound appealing, especially when you’re looking for a good evening meal, we’ll gladly make an exception for the Effenaar, a restaurant that’s been surprising Eindhoven’s culinary scene for decades. The menu isn’t extensive, but the quality of the food and the variety of the original dishes makes up for this small shortcoming, not to mention the tasty vegetarian options. If we were to give an award for ‘best organic house wine in the city’, this place would win hands down. Recommended for lunch too.QC‑1, Dommelstraat 2, tel. (+31) 402 39 36 57, www. effenaar.nl. MANGIARE Trattoria Mangiare isn’t the cheapest Italian restaurant in town, but one could make the argument that its original menu is worth a few extra euros. Its modern interior is a mix of the rustic and the industrial creating an atmosphere that’s both trendy and romantic. The menu changes with the seasons, but if it’s still available then definitely try the delicious pasta aglio e olio with prawns or one of its homemade soups. The terrace out front is a bit small, but a much larger outside seating area is available in the courtyard. An ideal spot for a great lunch - In Den Bergsche Tuin

SEAFOOD HAAI EET VIS Haai Eet Vis can be literally translated from the Dutch as Shark Eats Fish. We assume that a detailed explanation of the menu of this modern eatery with an industrial vibe would only be a waste of time and the owners seem to agree as they don’t really offer one. Just take a peek into the giant glass showcase and choose whatever river, lake or sea creature that looks appetising. Then tell the friendly staff how you’d like your fish prepared (grilled, fried, baked or raw) and let the games begin. The only way the seafood could be any fresher is if you caught it yourself.QB‑3, Smalle Haven 2-14, tel. (+31) 402 96 00 98, smallehaven. com. Open 17:00 - 24:00. Closed Mon, Tue, Sun.

The glass showcase at this charming and authentic bar is fully loaded with a wide range of cheeky twists on Spanish delicacies simply divided into blue (cold) and red (hot) tapas. Boca is well worth the visit for the interior alone which is a fascinating mix of industrial chic and typically southern European items like hanging dried hams. THAI KING THAI Far away from the bustle of Eindhoven’s city centre in a quiet residential neighbourhood you’ll find this small restaurant. While the interior lacks originality, the genuine Thai cuisine is some of the best we’ve had in the Netherlands. Run by a lovely Thai woman named Aum, the restaurant serves spicy, authentic Asian food as it was meant to be. The owners haven’t sacrificed their recipes to cater to local palates, so when you see four red peppers next to a dish on the menu it means that it’s basically a volcanic eruption on a plate.QP‑7, St. Bonifaciuslaan 7, tel. HANEDAN Eindhoven has its fair share of immigrants, many of them originating from Turkey. Thankfully, one of the best Turkish restaurants in town hasn’t customised its food to cater to local palates. Cosy Hanedan is decorated with lots of authentic memorabilia and souvenirs from the ‘old country’ and the staff treats each customer as if he were a king. This may take the rational Dutch by surprise and may even make them a little ill at ease, but we appreciated this genuinely friendly behaviour and found it refreshing. The pasta with Roquefort cheese and truffles was especially tasty, but you can be sure that whatever you order from the impressive menu will be excellent. The interior isn’t what one would call stylish, but the splendid view of the city’s main church from the second floor certainly makes up for this shortcoming.QB‑3, Kerkstraat 16, tel. DUTCH CAVIAR Either you love it or you hate it, but be that as it may, a single spoonful of caviar eaten as a garnish or as a spread supplies an adult with his daily requirement of vitamin B12. Besides being high in cholesterol and salt, this worldwide delicacy is also extremely expensive and this is mainly due to the fact that the salt-cured fish eggs are produced by sturgeon. The best of the best comes from the waters of Caspian and Black seas, but over-fishing, smuggling and pollution have considerably reduced the sturgeon population there. But if Russian and Iranian caviar tins are above your budget and the cheaper Scandinavian versions made from mashed and smoked cod roe aren’t to your taste, there’s yet another option. Since 2015 Eindhoven has tossed its hat into the arena of commercial caviar production. The local product, which is marketed as Anna Royal Dutch Caviar, refers to the former Russian Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna, who was also Queen of the Netherlands from 1840 - 1849. For only €10 you can purchase the cheapest 10g package, but the 100g gold-quality tin will set you back €200. Over 10,000 fish are carefully raised for their precious eggs in Eindhoven. Cafés

The Dutch share a love of espresso and cappuccino with the Italians. Cafés in Eindhoven quite often offer much more than just a cup of coffee with pastry or a cup of tea. Most of them have soups, salads and sandwiches on their menus, so the border between restaurants, pubs and cafés is very thin. But have a look over our carefully selected cafés and pick the one that is just right for your mood or occasion, Eet smakelijk!

BAKERIES BAKKER BART’S This chain of bakeries has been a big hit in the Netherlands since it opened its first shop in 1977. Today you can find nearly 200 Bakker Bart’s spread out across the country and it’s easy to understand why Bart the Baker is so popular. The huge selection of delicious, neatly stacked snacks in the shop’s front window is sure to lure you in and the strong coffee and tea will no doubt make you want to linger.QB‑2, Demer 21, tel. LUNCHROOMS BAGEL & JUICE Whatever topping you can think of is available at Bagel & Juice. We personally prefer the spicy chicken bagel filled to bursting with hot jalapeno peppers, but others swear by the Dutch bagel doused with hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles). Enjoy their finger licking breakfast, healthy all-organic fair-trade juice or try their brand new spinach/egg salad bagel. Its odd opening hours are still a mystery to us. BROWNIES & DOWNIES As the name suggests, the staff at this centrally located lunchroom aren’t the usual pimply faced teenagers found at fast food joints, but employees with Down Syndrome. GLOW IN THE DARK Always wanted to cycle through a Vincent van Gogh painting? Head down to Nuenen, a small town on the northeastern fringe of Eindhoven where the famous Dutch artist lived and created his first masterpiece: The Potato Eaters. Recently, the world’s first glow-inthe-dark cycling path was unveiled here that connects the Wolvenpad with Loostraat. This route was chosen because it joins two other famous landmarks painted by Van Gogh in his early years, namely the Collse and Opwettense watermills. The illuminated bike path itself is based on yet another renowned painting, Starry Night. A 600m stretch has been equipped with a special coating that recharges itself during the day (even when the sun doesn’t shine) and shines at night. It’s like cycling through a living fairytale. In a country of five million cyclists and hundreds of thousands of kilometers of bike paths, this could be a new way to forgo traditional lightning methods to save energy. This innovative, self-sufficient path has already drawn attention from abroad in the UK and Quatar where ‘smart’ highways will gain similar illumination. facebook.com/eindhoveninyourpocket

PUBLIC LABORATORY Eindhoven has been a fertile breeding ground for many innovations in the fields of technology, design and general knowledge for the past two centuries. Pioneering work seems to be synonymous with the way people think in this thriving city. One of the latest controversial social experiments is being closely watched by Dutch law enforcement, as it could potentially solve a wide range of problems associated with urban youth in the Netherlands. During weekends - and other party nights - the area around Stratumseind is packed with youngsters dripping with adrenaline, which often leads to fights and police intervention. A new, revolutionary strategy, however, could possibly stop these drunken kids from showing off their virility in public. Since early 2015 a certain orange fragrance has been sprayed across the length of this infamous party street, which is meant to soothe and calm passersby. Tests with colours, lights and sounds are also in the works and the police have already claimed to have positive effects when the fragrance is sprayed on violent inmates in holding cells. THE KITCHEN If you ever wondered what’s inside that giant green box of bricks opposite the train station, head over to the second floor. Tucked away in a corner of this plush shopper’s paradise is a pleasant surprise. The Kitchen is a restaurant that feeds the needs of every stomach. The separate children’s playground is yet another asset of this budget-friendly place.QB‑1, Piazza 1, www.debijenkorf.nl/eindhoven. Incredible interior at Blue Collar Bar

Nightlife

Eindhoven is home to a remarkable selection of nearly 200 bars and this is in large part due to the city’s active student community. With a handful of proper clubs to choose from, Eindhoven is also a great place to dance the night away. Don’t know where to start (or end)? The Stratumseind is a long, narrow street lined with the country’s largest concentration of cafés, clubs and bars. And oh yes, a Dutch person drinks on average 74 liters of beer per year. Proost.

BARS & PUBS BLUE COLLAR HOTEL We’re not usually big fans of hotel bars, but the funky Blue Collar in the former industrial area known as StrijpS gets a pass. Two life size portraits of, some would say, diametrically opposed artists, who changed music serve as its most notable piece of decoration. What lead singer Lemmy of the English rock band Motörhead did for hard rock, German composer Ludwig van Beethoven did for 18th-century classical music and their contributions are both honoured here. Enjoy a German Warsteiner brew or some snacks from your stylish blue bar stool that looks like it was taken from a cruise ship casino.QKlokgebouw 10, tel. (+31) 407 80 33 34, www.bluecollarhotel.nl. CAFE DE BARON Café De Baron has an interior that was already outdated when it was first envisioned in the 1970s but nobody seems to mind and neither do we. This good old-fashioned brown bar has an enormous selection of beers and a cosy, warm atmosphere that’s hard to beat. Or perhaps the pretty wait staff has skewed our opinion? No matter. On the first floor you’ll find an informal and affordable ‘eetcafé’ where the management has put lots of effort in creating goofy names for the usual vegetarian, meat and fish dishes. Service is speedy and the hidden rooftop terrace is one of Eindhoven’s best kept secrets. Highly recommended.QKleine Berg 26, tel. (+31) 402 96 00 99, www.cafedebaron.com. Open 12:00 - 02:00. JALEBX DE VOORUITGANG What do mirrors from the Czech Republic, tiles from New York and Barcelona, Persian carpets and old Dutch furniture have in common? They all blend together perfectly to create one of Eindhoven’s best hangouts. Instead of creating an artificial version of the past, the owners decided to make something completely new and the result is a tasteful combination of modern and industrial styles. In short, a visit to this trendy bar is always a feast for the senses. QB‑2, Markt 11, tel. (+31) 402 43 39 95, de-vooruitgang. nl. Open 10:00 - 02:00, Mon, Sun 11:00 - 01:00, Fri, Sat 10:00 - 03:00. PTJAULBXW DE WILDEMAN Although ‘De Wildeman’ or ‘The Wild Man’ sounds quite intriguing, this downtown location can’t live up to expectations. The lacklustre service and the mediocre pub food are hardly reasons to make this your local boozer, but the giant terrace, the charming interior and the extensive beer menu have managed to keep it afloat for the past two decades. If you’re feeling peckish stick to the finger food options, especially the generous serving of nachos. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are reserved for quiz nights.QB‑2, Markt 10, tel. Nightlife DRINKERS PUB Since Drinkers Pub is open every day of the week, you really don’t have an excuse to drink bad beer. Another 20 brews are available on draught and the munchies menu is a real crowd pleaser.QB‑3, Kerkstraat 11, tel. (+31) 402 46 81 21, www.drinkerspub.nl. KETELHUIS Since it opened in 2011 the Ketelhuis (Boiler House) has been the coolest, most laid back venue in Strijp S, Eindhoven’s hipster epicentre. This former industrial complex has been stylishly renovated and divided into different areas including a coffeehouse and a lunchroom. The club’s name refers to the many arcade games scattered about this stylish looking space. Watch people play Sega Racer or Street Fighter in this 1980s-style club where mainly techno and underground house can be heard. Nightlife CAFE WILHELMINA Every day of the week seems like a good day to enjoy good live music at this centrally located bar. Come here for blues, country, folk, rock or jazz performed on its small stage. Cafe Wilhelmina was probably entertaining Neanderthals during the last Ice Age, which is why the outdated interior could use some work, but none of the regulars seem to mind. It’s all about the music here. Although this definitely isn’t the place to find bearded hipsters in their prime, it’s interesting to watch local fossils go wild to good old rock music. Highly recommended.QA‑2, Wilhelminaplein 6, tel. (+31) 402 44 72 86, www.cafewilhelmina.nl. Open 12:00 - 02:00. JEB

STUDENT BARS CAFE ‘T LEMPKE One of the nicknames attributed to Eindhoven residents and PSV football fans in particular is (in the local dialect) lempkes, meaning ‘light bulbs’. In 2006 this downtown student bar opened proudly wearing this moniker as a badge of honour. Since then many couples have kissed here for the first time, got drunk here for the first time and and many other firsts in this pleasant local watering hole. If you don’t have the money to visit a PSV home game you can at least experience some of the vibrant atmosphere during a televised match here in the pub.QB‑3, Stratumseind 14, tel. TRADITIONAL BARS CAFE DE VALK Although Eindhoven is a modern city with heaps of hip design restaurants and nightlife options, luckily the city still has its fair share of traditional bars. Cafe De Valk is the flagship of these old brown bars boasting an interior that hasn’t changed since World War II and that’s exactly what the regulars who see this is as their home-away-from-home appreciate. This is simply a place to drink a bottle of Jupiler while playing some cards with your best mates. Smoking is still allowed and it can get pretty rowdy here during and after home games of local football giants PSV Eindhoven.QE‑6, Kruisstraat 89, tel. (+31) 402 93 80 00, www.cafedevalk. nl. COFFEESHOPS Although the Netherlands is known as a safe haven for people who enjoy the herb, you need valid papers to buy marijuana or hash from one of the coffeeshops listed here. DE BAKKERIJ Although not exactly a place to chill out or linger, The Bakery isn’t a bad option for a quick toke. Located on the city’s main nightlife street, it’s one of two available coffeeshops where you can buy a maximum of five grams of weed even after midnight. Buy some herb on the unattractive left side of the building and then take the other door by the entrance, which leads to the biggest smoking space in Eindhoven. QC‑3, Stratumseind 95, tel. We’d like to add ‘friendly staff’ to the list. Its menu might be on the small size, but it has some tempting products like the white widow and carramello, which are our undisputed favourites. Meetpoint’s name may not be the most original we’ve seen, but its mellow vibe and relaxed atmosphere is hard to duplicate. The early opening hours are convenient for those of us who like to wake and bake. QD‑6, Edisonstraat 91, tel. (+31) 402 44 81 27, www. meetpoint.org. Open 08:00 - 24:00. Also a good place for cannabis seeds, water pipes, and vaporisers. Sightseeing

Most of the city’s best sights are concentrated in the relatively small area that makes up the old town, which means that a full day and a good pair of walking shoes is all you need to cover most of the main attractions. However, with dozens of inviting cafés, a couple of lush parks and loads of photogenic, historic buildings, you could spend the better part of a week exploring this intriguing city.

CHURCHES AUGUSTINIAN CHURCH (AUGUSTIJNENKERK) St. Augustine’s Church has been a prominent feature of the Eindhoven skyline since the end of the 19th century. Built in neo-Gothic style in 1895, this historic house of worship goes by three different names: Augustijnenkerk, Heilig-Hartkerk and Paterskerk. The 66m-high church is still owned by its original founders, the monks of the nearby Mariënhage monastery and it’s most famous for the remarkable statue of the Holy Heart of Christ, not to mention its impressive stained glass. The church is home to a vibrant congregation and although mass is held in Dutch nearly every day, it’s also open to the public.QC‑2, Tramstraat 37, www.augustijnenkerk-eindhoven.nl. ST. CATHARINE’S CHURCH (SINT-CATHARINAKERK) If you’ve seen the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station in Amsterdam, then you might also recognise the genius of architect Pierre Cuypers when taking in the striking Sint-Catharinakerk in Eindhoven, complete with turrets and gargoyles. Of the roughly 70 churches that Cuypers designed, this is definitely one of his most renowned. In 1867 it replaced another church which in turn replaced the original structure from 1420 that was destroyed by a fire. Its two towers, named Maria and David, soar to a height of 73m each. In 1974 the city of Eindhoven claimed ownership of the church to ensure that this National Cultural Monument is preserved for future generations. A small exhibit of old bones, skeletons, jewellery and household items also details an archaeological dig that recently took place here.QB‑3, Stratumseind 2. TJ

MUSEUMS DAF MUSEUM Although industrial giants Philips recently left Eindhoven, lorry-maker DAF (Van Doorne’s Aanhangwagenfabriek) has been loyal to the city since 1928. Today it produces an astonishing 200 vehicles a day at its nearby factory and its highly entertaining museum has been fun for the whole family since 1993. For over two decades this former beer brewery has detailed the complete history of this Dutch company. Hundreds of classic automobiles and lorries are on display as well as futuristic prototypes that never made it to production. You can also view some special cars that were made for the Dutch royal family and the flashy vehicle that former First Lady Jacky Kennedy used to use to do her shopping. Speed freaks will appreciate the F3 racing cars as well as the rally vehicles. The army of volunteers who run the DAFMuseum consist mainly of retired assembly line workers who are still very proud of their company. QF‑7, Tongelresestraat 27, tel. Sightseeing EINDHOVEN MUSEUM This compact open-air museum at a picturesque location in the heart of the Genneper Park offers visitors a glimpse of life as it used be in Eindhoven. Stroll through the Iron Age village of Eversham before entering a replica of medieval Endehoven, as it was once known. Adorable, enthusiastic actors in period dress create a convincing picture of life before iPhones and the internet that even today’s modern children can’t help but enjoy. At the weekend and during school holidays a large variety of educational activities are available such as baking bread over a fire, javelin throwing and tin casting. You can also take a ride in a dugout canoe, have a sword fight or take the wooden rope ferry across the river. The museum is a great place to sample authentic ancient Dutch cuisine, especially the homemade bread. Highly recommended.QE‑7, Boutenslaan 161B, tel. (+31) 402 52 22 81, eindhovenmuseum.nl. Open April - Octo‑ ber 11:00 - 17:00. Closed Mon. Admission: adults (aged 4 - 64) €5.50 - 8, adults (aged 65 and over) €4.50 - 7.50, children 3 and under free. TLBKX PHILIPS MUSEUM Although the cynical among us could view this museum located in the original Philips factory from 1891 as pure company propaganda, we actually believe that this modern museum gives an interesting overview of this multinational giant that, until recently, played such a crucial role in Eindhoven’s history. Follow the evolution of the company from the creation of its first light bulb to the invention of famous household appliances that we couldn’t live without. Play Mission Eureka on an iPad, an innovative group game that details a century of Philips’ inventions, or take an iPad tour that affords visitors insights into the harsh working conditions faced by factory employees in former days, but don’t forget to take a selfie upstairs with the vintage boom box playing hits from the 1980s. It’s also interesting to see what medical technology Philips has created to prolong our lives. To mark the 125th anniversary of the company, an interactive exhibition entitled the Innovation and You Experience is now available, which explains the role that modern technology will play in all our futures..QA‑2, Emmasin‑ gel 31, tel. It opened its doors in 2013 when former PSV icon Willy van der Kuijlen symbolically kicked off its existence with a well-struck shot. Located at the east end of the stadium at entrance No.17, the museum illustrates the club’s rich history. You can take the audio tour to enjoy the museum to the fullest or combine the museum with a stadium tour (Mon - Sat 13:00 except match days, Wed 13:00, 14:30) where you can see the locker rooms, press centre and all of the other areas that are usually off limits.QE‑7, Stadion‑ plein 4, tel. TJL TON SMITS HUIS Two years after his death, Dutch cartoonist and artist Ton Smits was finally honoured with his own museum in 1983. Easily recognisable, as it’s probably the only bright blue and pink villa in the entire Netherlands, the museum is open only one day of the week, so you’ll have to plan accordingly of you want to view his lifetime collection of 20,000 drawings and a few dozen paintings. Although his paintings have won awards, he is more renowned for his simple cartoons, which are much more accessible to the general public. As early as World War II, Ton Smits was already mocking Holland’s Nazi occupiers, but after the conflict had ended his talent was rewarded by leading national Dutch newspapers who published his cartoons. Later still he gained international recognition when he began making impressive cartoons for The New Yorker. Although he never fulfilled his dream of being a circus clown, Ton Smits’ drawings achieved the same goal - making people smile.QE‑7, Jacob Reviuslaan 25, tel. (+31) 402 11 47 86, tonsmitshuis.nl. Sightseeing VAN ABBEMUSEUM The Van Abbemuseum was founded in 1936 by local art lover, philanthropist and cigar manufacturer Henri van Abbe. Over the years this museum for contemporary art has amassed a vast and valuable collection of roughly 2,700 works of art, only some of which are on display. The enchanting central staircase takes you through the various levels of the building including the top floor where masterpieces by Picasso, Kandinsky and Mondrian can be found. You can also view video art, paintings, sculptures and drawings. Although some visitors have quipped that it’s ‘the most unapproachable art you’ve ever seen’, we believe that no visit to Eindhoven is complete without a visit to the Van Abbemuseum. PARKS & CEMETERIES BRAINPORT PARK (BRAINPORTPARK) At the far north-western boundaries of Eindhoven lies Brainport Park, which was once known as Landelijk Strijp in a former life. It’s actually a huge collection of fields, forests, parks and industrial areas and the city’s airport is also considered a part of this vast property that is divided into smaller parcels by the A2 highway, a rail line and the Beatrix Canal. Get yourself a proper map of the terrain at the tourist information centre and cycle or stroll through this immense green space, which is also home to PSV Eindhoven’s picturesque training complex.QD‑6, G‑9/10, Strijp.

GENNEPER PARK (GENNEPER PARKEN) This multifunctional recreation area is home to an ice skating rink (IJssportcentrum Eindhoven), a swimming pool (De Tongelreep), a restaurant (Paviljoen Genneper Parken) and lots of open green space. Roughly 3 million people visit the park each year, which is spread out over an area of over 200ha. It’s also home to two museums - the Eindhoven Museum and the Ton Smits Huis cartoon museum.QE‑7/8, Antoon Coolenlaan 1, www. genneperparken.nl.

EINDHOVEN-WOENSEL CEMETERY (OORLOGSBEGRAAFPLAATS EINDHOVEN-WOENSEL) Due to the heavy fighting that took place in and around Eindhoven in 1944, stark reminders of WWII can be found throughout the area. Exactly 686 graves of the war dead can be found in this cemetery, most of them Allied airmen killed during strategic bombing campaigns. After years of neglect the graveyard has finally been renovated and once again is a worthy resting place for these fallen heroes. Among those who gave their lives are 570 British, 50 Canadian, 38 Australian, 9 New Zealand, 1 South African, 4 Dutch and 14 Polish soldiers.QE‑6, Baffinlaan.

GROENDOMEIN WASVEN Het Wasven is a tiny green oasis that is more of a picturesque garden than a park. For centuries this hidden gem was also home to a castle dating from 1375, but sadly in 1930 its owners had it demolished. The only visible reminder of that bygone era is the stately row of beech trees that once lead to the entrance. Today this 6ha area is owned and operated by a group of local volunteers and is now home to an organic bakery, an historic farm, a restaurant and an ancient 4.5m-thick tree. Come here during the summer on the last Sunday of the month for intimate afternoon concerts or take the ‘Made in Tongelre’ bike route throughout the district, which passes by many of the places where Vincent van Gogh used to paint. The map is on sale at the restaurant for €2.QF‑6, Celebeslaan 30, tel. (+31) 407 87 07 07, www.wasven.nl. T6L EGBKW

MEERLAND This recently designed park the size of 100 football fields was inspired by the nearby De Kempen nature reserve as well as traditional landscaped English gardens. The result is a fascinating mix of styles making it the ideal place for a relaxing day out. Due to its manmade elevation, you don’t actually feel like you’re in the heart of the flat Dutch countryside. Sightseeing PHILIPS VAN LENNEP PARK (PHILIPS VAN LENNEPPARK) One of the city’s newest parks was created in 1964 when the Philips-Van Lennep family (hence the name) gave this parcel of land to the municipality of Eindhoven. The rose garden is one of its main attractions, while the open fields are often occupied by sports enthusiasts and, on sunny days, barbecue parties. A children’s petting zoo is also available.QD‑6, Oude Vensedijk. STADSWANDEL PARK One of Eindhoven’s most popular parks, Stadswandelpark, was created in 1921. Its impressive pond and green fields make it an ideal place for a picnic, but if you’re after more intellectual or artistic pursuits then visit the sculpture garden, the intriguing Radio Monument or the Observation Tower. Then again, you can just relax on the banks of the meandering River Dommel that traverses the park.QE‑7, Limburglaan.

PLACES OF INTEREST BERENKUIL (BEAR PIT) People driving on Eindhoven’s boring ring road will probably never suspect that a completely different world lies beneath the traffic circle at Insulindeplein. From the upper level it looks like any other ordinary urban roundabout, but a second sunken bicycle and pedestrian circle holds a hidden secret. Since 2004, the Berenkuil (Bear Pit), as it’s known by locals, has been designated a free zone for graffiti artists. Far from the prying eyes of the police, hundreds of impressive modern murals have been created at the crossroads of underpasses, ramps, pedestrian tunnels and nearby streets.QF‑6, Insulindeplein. STRATUMSEIND During the day Stratumseind, which is located between the twin towers of St. Catharina Church and the River Dommel, is one of Eindhoven’s dirtiest streets, but as soon as the sun sets, party-goers arrive in droves and the street truly comes alive. No other street in the Netherlands offers as many bars, club, pubs and snack bars (around 55) in such a small stretch of road. See the nightlife chapter for reviews of the best venues that call this temple to revelry home.QStraumseind.

Take a tour of PSV’s legendary stadium

SIGHTSEEING TOURS PHILIPS STADION A tour of the Philips Stadion is a must while in Eindhoven. The third largest sports facility in the nation (after Ajax’s pitch in Amsterdam and Feyenoord’s in Rotterdam) is home to renowned football club PSV Eindhoven. More than 35,000 fans fill the seats here twice a week during the season to watch their local heroes and the stadium is still at the same location where Philips Sport Vereniging began way back in 1913. A guided tour is the best way to see all of the nooks and crannies of the colossal building and to hear interesting stories related to both the stadium and the sports club. That’s how we know that English football legend David Beckham loved the stadium, but hated the away dressing room. Admission to the PSV Museum, which is full of club memorabilia and trophies, is included in the combined ticket and is located inside the Philips Stadium.QE‑7, Stadionplein 4, tel. KING OF POP Most of the statues within Eindhoven’s city limits are dedicated to local heroes and people who have played an important role in the city’s history. On the outskirts of city at Eindhovenseweg Zuid 59 in the town of Best near the A2 highway you’ll find this 11m-tall polyester statue of The King of Pop. Michael Jackson may have left Planet Earth in 2009, but apparently he’s still alive in the heart’s of his fans. The owners of the nearby McDonald’s bought the statue directly from the record company in 1995, who used the monstrous statue for the release of Jackson’s HIStory album. Worldwide, there are only eight of these reproductions, but this is the only one permanently located in a public space. Although it’s worth a visit on any given day, if you drop by on June 25, the day of his passing, you’ll see hundreds of fans including look-a-likes showing off their best moonwalking skills. The Eindhoven location of McDonald’s also sports plenty of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia, including a life-size Marilyn Monroe doll. June 2016 - May 2017

Sightseeing SMARTEST REGION Being called the ‘smartest region’ in the world is a title that no one would refuse. Especially when its given to you several times (beginning in 2009) by a respectable institution like the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF). Since 2002 the ICF international think tank has studied the economic and social development of communities in the 21st century. Only a few dozen cities or metropolitan areas in the world have received this prestigious award. Neighbouring Helmond and Veldhoven are also part of the ‘smartest region in the world’.

STATUES DOORS AT EVOLUON It could be a prop from a James Bond movie. Do these huge, solid bronze doors lead to a criminal organisation’s lair? The reality is much less spectacular. The doors of Eindhoven’s iconic spaceship building were a gift to Philips from its employees on its 75th birthday. They were designed in 1966 to ‘symbolize the evolution of the human race under the influence of modern technology’. These mighty doors, which are nearly 3m tall and 2.5m wide, are covered in interesting scenes that include hunters and farmers as well as Icarus’ unfortunate flight in Greek mythology. These surreal figures are surrounded by mathematical formulas by Einstein and other geniuses who, unlike us, could probably grasp the enigmatic meaning of these unusual doors.QH‑10, Noord Brabantlaan 1a. FRITS PHILIPS STATUE One of Eindhoven’s most popular native sons was Frederik Jacques Philips (1905 - 2005) who died at the tender age of 100. He is remembered abroad as the fourth chairman of Dutch electronics giant Philips, but the Dutch remember him for his efforts to save local Jews from Nazi concentration camps. He convinced the German occupiers that 382 Jewish employees were absolutely indispensable to his operations making him a kind of Dutch Oskar Schindler. An empty seat is always reserved for him at the Philips football stadium where PSV EIndhoven play and since 1951 a life size statue of him has graced the city’s central square, the Markt. The city even minted a special coin in his honour, which bears his nickname ‘Fritske’. A concert hall, a restaurant and a glossy magazine are also named after the industrialist.QB‑2, Markt. 32 Eindhoven In Your Pocket

HOLY HEART STATUE (HEILIG HARTBEELD) Dutch Catholics have revered the so-called Holy Heart of Christ since the 13th century, but for some reason hundreds of years later in the late 1800s and early 1900s this practice reached a fever pitch when countless statues of the ‘holy heart’ were erected all over the Netherlands. Eindhoven was no exception and a few of these, including the one at the top of the picturesque Paterskerk dating from 1898, sprouted up in the city. Locals have ironically given the 5m-tall, 800kg statue the nickname ‘daredevil Jesus’ which refers to its precarious position 60m above the ground. Although it’s beautifully lit at night, it’s nearly impossible to spot the bullet wounds he received during WWII.QC‑2, Tramstraat 37. J RADIO MONUMENT (RADIOMONUMENT) Eindhoven and electronic giants Philips are inextricably linked with one another, even though the Dutch multinational abandoned the city in favour of Amsterdam. In 1936, when Philips was still beloved by the city, the Radio Monument was erected in the heart of the Stadswandelpark. This remarkable bronze statue, called Semper Tangens, resembles a shouting woman and stretches over nearly half of the lake. It commemorates the first radio connection between the Netherlands and its former colony Indonesia back in 1926.QE‑7, Stadswandelpark. THE LITTLE BULB MAKER (LAMPENMAAKSTERTJE) Although child labour is still a hot topic these days, less than a century ago it was quite normal for children to help contribute to the family’s income by working. Long before robots and automated assembly lines, Philips used ‘little girls with tiny fingers’ for the most delicate work needed to produce light bulbs. This statue was erected in 1966 to honour the thousands of factory girls who brought the company worldwide fame for little compensation. The monument travelled to various locations around the city before finally settling down in front of the Philips Museum. QA‑2, Emmasingel.

BUILDINGS & SQUARES EVOLUON Don’t believe in aliens? Visit Noord Brabantlaan 1a where a giant spaceship has taken up residence. The unusual structure became an instant landmark and a symbol of the city since it landed in Eindhoven in 1966. Although it functioned as a science museum especially built for Philips until 1989, the futuristic 77m-high concrete dome was eventually transformed into a fancy conference centre. QH‑10, Noord Brabantlaan 1a. HL THE BLOB If you’re into futuristic design don’t miss The Blob, which stands for Binary Large OBject. Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas is the genius behind this 25m-high, organically shaped glass and steel structure that was built as the gateway to the Admirant shopping mall. Its spacious interior is home to two shops, but smaller ‘Blobs’ serve as entrances to nearby underground bike shelters.QB‑1, 18 September Plein. VAN ABBEMUSEUM Even if you don’t appreciate modern art you can still enjoy the striking architecture of the Van Abbemuseum. It’s distinctive architectural design and picturesque natural setting on the east bank of the River Dommel make it a sight worth seeing. In fact, two buildings have merged into one, with the facade of the new building clad in grey natural stone from the northern part of Scandinavia. This sleek design forms an expressive contrast between the light and the surprisingly transparent spaces within. Its beating heart is a 27m-high tower with inward-sloping walls upon which every floor opens out creating a modern maze of sorts.QC‑3, Bilderdijklaan 10.

OUT OF TOWN EDAH MUSEUM One of the biggest supermarkets in the Netherlands closed its last shop in 2007, but its ‘cultural inheritance’ is still visible in the small town of Helmond just outside Eindhoven. Hotels

Eindhoven has rooms for all budgets and tastes

With more than 20 hotels to choose from and 660,000 people staying overnight per year, Eindhoven has and needs a decent selection of accommodation including some great budget options. The tourist office can book rooms for you and may even have some special deals that will save you some cash.

AIRPORT HOTELS TULIP INN EINDHOVEN AIRPORT Although Eindhoven Airport pales in comparison to mighty Schiphol Amsterdam, this relaxed and convenient transport hub is constantly evolving and now even includes its own hotel - the Tulip Inn. Right above the central terminal you’ll find 120 comfortable, stylishly decorated rooms with all of the usual amenities, especially the free Wi-Fi is a great asset. The higher levels also offer great views of the main landing strip at this former military airport.QG‑9, Luchthavenweg 27, tel. (+31) 403 03 06 15, www.tulipinneindhovenairport. com. 120 rooms. BOUTIQUE HOTELS BOUTIQUE HOTEL GLOW Who says size doesn’t matter? Although the 40 rooms at this hotel are quite large by Dutch standards, the attached bathrooms are hardly big enough to accommodate an average person. However, the vibrant atmosphere of this funky, modern place in the centre of town more than makes up for this minor shortcoming. In addition to friendly staff, the rooms here are spotlessly clean, have incredibly comfortable twin beds and offer minimalist décor. And if, like us, you’re not handy with appliances and can’t get the coffee machine to work then pop down to the lounge on the second floor that offers free hot drinks day or night and a well-stocked vending machine. Rooms at the back side tend to be more conducive to sleep, but if you’re looking for signs of human existence then hit the giant rooftop terrace.QB‑3, Keizersgracht 13 A-B, tel. Hotels BLUE COLLAR HOTEL The large Blue Collar Hotel is one of Eindhoven’s cheapest hostels but it also offers a handful of high-class rooms. Experience some old-school charm at the Burlesque Suite Silver or dig a little deeper in your pockets and stay at the unbeatable Burlesque Suite Gold. Both rooms are well worth the extra cash and include unbeatable views, especially from the luxurious bath in the cosy wet corner. If you like your sour mash then the Jacks Room, complete with souvenirs from the American whisky giant, is a must. QD‑6, Klokgebouw 10, tel. (+31) 407 80 33 34, www. bluecollarhotel.nl. PAULEGBKXW INNTEL HOTELS ART EINDHOVEN Relax in lovely surroundings where teams of workers and engineers once designed and manufactured light bulbs. One of Eindhoven’s most striking buildings, the monumental Philips Light Tower, which was erected in 1909, is now home to the most artistically designed hotel in the city. 227 rooms and suites have been individually decorated and most retain historic industrial elements from the original architectural marvel. If you’ve got money to burn, then book one of the loft rooms with 4m-high ceilings.QA‑2, Lichttoren 22, tel. (+31) 407 51 35 00, www. inntelhotelsarteindhoven.nl. 227 rooms. This historic art nouveau mansion built in 1908 is run by Jos, a friendly host who makes every guest feel like a member of the family. Both rooms are wonderfully decorated with matching interiors equipped with all of the amenities you could possibly imagine not to mention Nespresso machines, fireplaces and wine cabinets. And if you’re curious why its named after a tree, just look at the stately avenue outside that’s lined with dozens of sycamores covered in sticky, green buds. The secluded garden is yet another asset of the hotel and the city’s highlights are within easy walking distance.QC‑1, Parklaan 36, tel. CREAM OF THE CROP HAMPSHIRE HOTEL - CROWN EINDHOVEN If you’re looking for a downtown location and good value for money the Hampshire Hotel - Crown Eindhoven is a good place to start. With the train station, Primark, a casino and lots of international chains just around the corner, it’s hard to beat this centrally located hotel. And with 135 rooms in various price categories to choose from, you can’t really go wrong with this four-star hotel that provides everything from affordable basic rooms to recently renovated executive and superior accommodation. The rooms on the top floors offer incredible views of the city. QB‑2, Vestdijk 14-16, tel. (+31) 408 44 40 00, www. hampshire-hotels.com. 135 rooms. PJAUG KW hhhh PARK PLAZA EINDHOVEN In our opinion, a good breakfast can make or break your day and the buffet at the Park Plaza will set you on the right path. You can also expect comfortable lodging with all of the usual amenities for reasonable prices. You’ll get clean, quiet accommodation at this centrally located business hotel and a few extras like the modern espresso machines and the fluffy towels, which are much better than the usual cheap, synthetic stuff you get at most hotels. A small gym, sauna, pool and free wi-fi are also at your disposal.QC‑3, Geldropseweg 17, tel. (+31) 402 14 65 00, www.parkplaza.com. 104 rooms. PTJAU GK hhhh PULLMAN EINDHOVEN COCAGNE Pullman Eindhoven Cocagne is without a doubt the best hotel in Eindhoven. Despite its enormous size and its whopping 320 rooms, the staff somehow manage to create a personal, informal atmosphere, but with outstanding service. Its central location a short walk from the train station and its spacious, designer rooms make it a favourite among guests who don’t mind paying extra for convenience and comfort. Accommodation also includes state-of-the-art wet rooms with rain showers and rooms on the top floor provide picturesque views of Eindhoven’s skyline.QC‑2, Vestdijk 47, tel. Hotels CONFERENCE HOTELS NH EINDHOVEN CONFERENCE CENTRE KONINGSHOF An aptly long name describes an even bigger complex that is so large that it requires its own visitors’ map just to navigate its hallways. Although the whole layout looks like it was made with giants in mind, the Spartan rooms tend to be on the small side. This, of course, is only natural given its history as a monastery. Today its peaceful location in lush, green surroundings where monks once strolled, prayed and pondered is its key asset. The genuine atmosphere and old world charm of the Koningshof are its greatest strengths. A gym, indoor pool, restaurant and tennis/squash courts are also at your disposal.QG‑10, Locht 117, Veldhoven, tel. (+31) 402 53 74 75, www.nh-hotels.com. 509 rooms. HAULGBKXCW hhhh

MID-RANGE CAMPANILE HOTEL & RESTAURANT EINDHOVEN Quiet rooms with double glazed windows await you at the Eindhoven location of this French hotel chain and this noise suppression technology is an absolute must as the hotel is positioned between two busy dual carriageways. At first glance it looks like a business hotel like many others, and the architecture puts one in mind of American roadside motels complete with exterior balconies. Inside you can expect spotlessly clean rooms with free wi-fi and a large work stations. Car owners will also appreciate the free parking outside.QG‑10, Noord-Brabantlaan 309, tel. QUEEN HOTEL If you’re looking for a downtown location from which to explore the city, then look no further than the Queen Hotel. However, due to its superb location on the city’s famous Market Square its 40 rooms tend to get snapped up quickly so be sure to book well in advance. You can expect comfortable beds in spacious, clean rooms with large bathrooms, but light sleepers should probably book a room at the quieter back end away from all of the action on the square. Its restaurant, which serves huge portions of excellent food for reasonable prices, is a local favourite.QB‑2, Markt 7, tel. (+31) 402 45 24 80, www. queeneindhoven.nl. 40 rooms. JKW hhh VAN DER VALK HOTEL EINDHOVEN Van der Valk is a respected name in the Dutch accommodation industry, but this Eindhoven location is a tale of two hotels. The much older concrete structure offers large, outdated rooms begging to be upgraded, while the accommodation in the adjoining tower is both modern and, dare we say, stylish. The tower also provides views of its vast green surroundings and a hockey complex, not to mention the nearby highway. With three restaurants, a swimming pool and a modern conference centre, travellers seldom have a reason to leave.QH‑10, Aalsterweg 322, tel. (+31) 402 11 60 33, www.hoteleindhoven.nl. 270 rooms. MERCURE HOTEL EINDHOVEN Although one could argue that this is more of a three-star than a four-star hotel, its quiet atmosphere and pleasant ambience make it a decent option for a night. The rooms are surprisingly large and so is the breakfast buffet, which definitely meets our approval. The secluded parking lot is a perk if you’ve got your own ride, but Eindhoven’s old town is only a 15-minute walk away.QE‑7, Leenderweg 80, tel. (+31) 402 12 10 12, www.mercure.com. 60 rooms. AUBERGE NASSAU The Auberge Nassau is one of the better budget deals you’ll find in Eindhoven. Eight basic, yet clean hotel rooms await you at this downtown location on a charming square where you can expect affordable rates and a free big breakfast served at the attached restaurant. The bathrooms may be a bit on the small side, but if you’re here for a short stay they’ll do the trick. Don’t bother looking for the reception as there isn’t one. Just pop in the restaurant downstairs to check in and then prepare yourself for the hike up a steep flight of stairs that can be quite a challenge, especially with heavy luggage.QA‑2, Wilhelminaplein 14, tel. HOTEL BENNO Its central location is by far the biggest asset of this overpriced two-star hotel. If you’re here only for a night or a short stay, the basic, cosy rooms of this historic building will do the job, but otherwise the inconvenience of shared bathrooms and toilets can get on your nerves. A small sink and mirror are, however, available in each of the claustrophobic singles. The 24 rooms are spread out across two floors and can only be reached via a frightening set of narrow, steep steps. Finding the toilet in the corridor is yet another exasperating experience, especially in the middle of the night or after an evening of bar hopping. .QA‑2, Wilhelminaplein 9, tel. Despite its rather lofty name, this warmly designed hotel is more of a hostel as some rooms aren’t equipped with bathrooms or toilets. The recently renovated rooms are, however, furnished with all the basics like comfortable mattresses and small sinks. HOSTELS 3BE BACKPACKERS BED & BREAKFAST EINDHOVEN If you’re on a budget or just enjoy the cosiness of communal living than this place is a good option. Despite having labelled itself a B&B, it’s more of a hostel and you’ll also have to part with €5 for breakfast. That said, this is by far the most laid back accommodation in the city with one of the finest smoking rooms we’ve ever encountered on Dutch soil. Even the cuddly house dog is adorable. The clean dormitories come in different sizes with comfortable bunk beds and the lounge area includes games, a pool table and free, altbeit slow, wifi. The spacious wet area offers modern toilets and perfect showers that are way above average for a hostel. Its central location, a mere five-minute walk from the best bars and a 15-minute stroll from the station, makes it an ideal base for exploring the city. Unfortunately, the often absent reception staff seem to have gone walkabout quite often, but otherwise this hostel gets a big thumbs up.QC‑3, Stratumsedijk 31, tel. (+31) 402 12 04 16, www.3be.nl. SEAT 43, ROW 22 Of the 36,500 seats available at the Philips Stadium, one is always left unoccupied. Seat 43, row 22 in section D is reserved for the late Frits Philips. Although this is a comfortable VIP box seat, Mr. Philips himself preferred to stand amongst the ‘normal’ supporters to watch his beloved PSV Eindhoven football team. Diehard fans even gave nicknamed him ‘The King of Eindhoven’. The football royal passed away on December 5, 2005, two months after his 100th birthday. A statue of the local celebrity was erected at the Markt in downtown Eindhoven in 2007. BLUE COLLAR HOTEL Occupying some enviable real estate in what’s generally considered Eindhoven’s new hotspot, the large Blue Collar Hotel at Strijp-S offers an unbeatable combination of industrial architecture and tastefully decorated rooms. The building and its restaurant/bar are crammed full of cheeky artefacts and souvenirs from around Europe and, best of all, Blue Collar provides rooms for all budgets. In addition to two suites and the Jacks Room, there are plenty of other options for travellers with less money to burn. If you don’t mind sharing a room with strangers, reserve a bunk bed in the hostel area that also offers a female dormitory. Although the building was once the main headquarters of electronics giant Philips, it’s now a fun place to spend the night or to have drinks with friends.QD‑6, Klokgebouw 10, tel. But don’t be fooled by the uninspiring facade of this huge complex, as you can expect first-class service from start to finish. High Tech Campus High Tech Campus Eindhoven is the smartest square kilometre in Europe with more than 135 tech companies and institutes employing some 10,000 researchers, developers and entrepreneurs working on the cutting edge of future technologies. Over 85 different nationalities work at the High Tech Campus and the so-called Strip, which is essentially a long row of cafés, bistros and fast food joints, is the beating heart of this giant complex of office buildings.

EATING & DRINKING AL FRESCO Al Fresco is one of the better authentic Italian cuisine options at the High Tech Campus. You probably wouldn’t expect such an elegant and sophisticated fine dining establishment given that most of the area is populated by tech geeks and workaholics, but here it is. In fact, it’s only downside seems to be its limited opening hours, which means that it’s only open for lunch. The all-youcan-eat buffet is great value for money and if you work in the area and simply can’t put down your computer, Al Fresco also provides convenient workspaces.QD‑8, High Tech Campus, tel. PA U L G K W LOVE MY CURRY With a huge and still growing population of Indian expats in Eindhoven, it was only a matter of time before someone started preparing some proper curries. Love my Curry’s menu offers a perfect balance of the sweet, the sour, the spicy and the savoury, thus bringing the authentic tastes and aromas of India to Eindhoven’s High Tech Campus. Its ethnic ambience is bolstered by hundreds of knickknacks and souvenirs from the subcontinent. QD‑8, High Tech Campus, www.hightechcampus. com/restaurants. Open 11:30 - 14:00. Closed Sat, Sun. PT A U L B K S W STARBUCKS Starbucks only recently conquered the hearts of local Java drinkers and they’ve finally made it to Eindhoven where the word coffeeshop differs quite substantially from its counterpart in Seattle. Perhaps this is the reason they’ve only recently entered the market. In any event, it’s everything you’d expect. It’s big, comfortable and its tempting coffee combos keep a parade of jittery caffeine addicts queued up at all times. The world’s most popular coffeehouse also sells the usual lattes, Americanos, cappuccinos, frappuccinos, espressos as well as countless other coffees.QD‑8, High Tech Campus, www. hightechcampus.com. THE FOOD TRUCK If the weather is too good to sit inside or you just want to treat yourself to some classic fast food, keep your eyes peeled for the one and only Food Truck. Every weekday at lunchtime this brightly coloured van is parked in front of the Strip. In addition to the usual finger food like burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, wraps and pizza slices, it also serves a tasty daily special.QD‑8, High Tech Cam‑ pus, www.hightechcampus.com. Open 11:30 - 14:00. Closed Sat, Sun. N THE LOUNGE If you’ve got money to burn or your boss has offered to take care of the bill, then look no further than the Lounge. If you can’t get enough seafood and you don’t mind sharing the room with countless business people in suits, then this is place for you. The menu is a bit limited, but what it offers is simply fantastic. Chef Jasper is one of those talented people who can turn the simplest ingredients into a proper feast for the senses. The stylish ambience, the excellent panoramic views and the competent staff also make the Lounge a worthwhile destination for lunch. QD‑8, High Tech Campus, tel. (+31) 402 30 57 00, www. hightechcampus.com/restaurants. Open 11:00 - 15:00. Closed Sat, Sun. PHAULGKW THE MART It’s easy to write a cynical comment about the very limited opening hours of The Mart or any other food joints of The Strip. However, this place caters mainly to the thousands of white collar workers from the surrounding offices, who only leave their caves/cubicles to eat a healthy lunch here. This giant self-service restaurant has a central courtyard where every centimetre of the long tables is filled with a wide selection of homemade breads and organic rolls, all displayed in attractive ways. We especially liked the mind-boggling selection of soups and the fact that most of the scrumptious dishes made with locally sourced ingredients are dirt cheap. With so many office workers around, it’s also easy to make new friends at one of the communal tables, but you should probably avoid the rush hour from 12:00 - 13:00.QD‑8, High Tech Campus, www. hightechcampus.com.
