MOFFAT TAKES PLACE IN HISTORY... Scottish teenager becomes a BTCC record breaker on a challenging debut weekend at Knockhill

Inside BTCC

jakobebrey.com

Aiden Moffat insists there is plenty more to come on the back of a challenging debut in the British Touring Car Championship at Knockhill. At the age of just 16 years, ten months and 28 days, Moffat broke Tom Chilton’s record when he joined the field in Scotland at the wheel of his Finesse Motorsport-run Chevrolet Cruze, with his first weekend in the series turning into something of a baptism of fire. The late nature of his deal to become the latest contender in the Jack Sears Trophy meant Moffat went into the weekend without the opportunity to test the Cruze, which had been raced earlier in the year by Joe Girling. With former BTCC racer turned GT ace Jonny www.insidebtcc.com

Adam on hand to provide advice, Moffat’s weekend looked set to start in solid fashion as he matched the pace of his S2000 rivals in the early part of first practice. However, things then went awry when an engine issue forced the former MINI racer to return to the pits, where it was determined that the damage sustained would be enough to rule him out of the remainder of Saturday’s running.

With repairs carried out overnight, Moffat took his place on the grid for race one and successfully made it to the finish despite being down on power – crossing the line third in class and 21st overall.

While that meant a disappointing end to his debut weekend, Moffat refused to be too downbeat given the manner in which the deal had been put together in the first place.

However, a suspension issue then saw Moffat retire early on in race two, with damage to the subframe from the resultant accident preventing him from starting race three.

“It was a very hard weekend,” he said. “It was a last minute deal so there was no time for testing and it was a gamble that I would be able to learn the car on Saturday. Engine issues unfortunately meant that we couldn’t. We were there or thereabouts before the problems, but others got quicker as the day went on and we had to sit and watch. I also missed out on the chance to learn about the car ahead of race day. “The Finesse boys did a great job to redo the engine but we couldn’t run full boost in race one and it meant we were losing pace on the straights. We Inside BTCC

also had some understeer in the corners, which didn’t help. In the second race, we’d turned up the boost and thought we had a chance to make some good progress, but then coming into the chicane, something in the suspension broke and that was game over. “It’s not how I wanted it to go, but it was still a great experience and I can’t be down about it all. I’m on the grid racing a touring car at the age of 16 which no-one Inside BTCC

else has gone before; it’s just a shame that I didn’t get the track time I needed.” Moffat will now hope to kick-start his BTCC career in earnest during the latter part of the season, with plans in place to contest the final two rounds of the year at Silverstone and Brands Hatch. The 16-year-old had been due to compete at Rockingham but will instead miss the race weekend to

focus on his commitments racing back in Scotland. “I know I can go faster in the car but I just didn’t have the time [at Knockhill] to build up the pace,” he said. “There is some set-up work to do that we missed out on because of the lost time in practice and I know that I’m nowhere near my potential. There is a lot more to come in the remaining races for sure.”

TONY JACKSON A FATHER’S TALE... Inside BTCC talks to Tony Jackson about the career of son Mat, who has firmly established himself on the touring car grid since making his debut back in 2007… Inside BTCC 10

www.insidebtcc.com

Since bursting onto the scene with a trip to the podium on his BTCC debut, Mat Jackson has firmly established himself as one of the top drivers on the grid.

round of the season at Knockhill, Inside BTCC took the chance to sit down with Jackson’s father Tony about the 32-yearold’s career to date… Inside BTCC:

Runner-up in the standings back in 2008, Jackson has gone on to take 19 career wins to date and broke a record back in 2009 when he picked up eight consecutive podium finishes driving an RMLrun Chevrolet Lacetti. Since 2010, Jackson has been part of the Motorbase line-up and is now working with the team on the development of the NGTC-spec Ford Focus it debuted in the series last year. During the most recent

When Mat was young, what was it that made you realise that he wanted to be a racing driver. Tony Jackson: As a youngster, Mat was a very accomplished athlete. He would run for Warwickshire and then he suffered an injury to his knee that required some surgery, and it took away some of his confidence at things like running and football. As an eleven-year-old, we realised he wasn’t getting

much satisfaction out of life and that it was all school and no play. We asked him what he’d like to do and he said there was a lad at school who went go-kart racing and seemed to have good fun doing it. That lad was Robbie Kerr, who is now a well-known figure in British motorsport. We ended up with a few go-karts, as we also have an older son called Dan, and we went off doing some club racing. Mat was instantly a success, and as a novice with no proper training, he was able to keep up with the seeded drivers. He got pushed off a lot for it if I remember rightly! It was all good run but there was no career plan or anything like that, it was just a means to have some family fun.

Of course, the karting grew legs and we ended up doing the British Championship in Juniors with Mat and also in Seniors with Dan. Then we did the Irish championship and Mat got involved in Europe in Formula A Karts. Karting was never kind to Mat as his weight was always advancing quicker than the weight limits in the karts. At 140 kilos, it starts to tell! We took the view that he should move out of karts when he was sixteen and a half and he went into the Formula Honda championship where he was immediately successful. He was second in his first year and we thought about Formula Renault but it wasn’t on the radar as a career

Inside BTCC 11

move and it seemed a bit serious, so we went to Renault Clios instead. There was a little interlude in the Fiesta Winter Series with Colin Stancombe and his team but the decision was to go with the Clios as the next step and head to tin-tops.

Inside BTCC: When Mat said he fancied karting, was there part of you that was worried about cost? Tony Jackson: Not really as it was never thought of in that way. It was just a case of getting a second-hand go-kart to do some practice days. We didn’t think of the career path and the financial involvement there was. There was never a grand plan to Inside BTCC 12

make it in motorsport, it was a means to an end. Mat was in a black hole, so to speak, and it was a way of moving things forward. The whole family enjoyed it and it became the centre of attention. Inside BTCC: Do you think the family business played a part?

but it was a case of no money, no talent and no hope really! It was a short-lived career… Mat just proved to be very talented and the arrangement was that they could go karting as much as they liked but it was race on Sunday and school on Monday. Racing wasn’t allowed to be dominant in that side of things.

were all heavily involved. When mat did the Production Class in the BTCC, people said to him ‘Keep doing what you are doing and you’ll get a works drive’ but the works drives evaporated. We decided he should go back to university to get a degree and we went down to see him to be told by the university that they didn’t see him that often.

Tony Jackson: Inside BTCC: People often ask if we guided him in this direction. I was always interested in motorsport and Dan was into trials riding and scrambling. Mat had his own motorbikes when he was younger as well, so there was mechanical interest. His grandfather was also into speedway so I suppose there is motorsport in the DNA. I had a go myself

At what point did you realise it could be more than a hobby? Tony Jackson: When he was in karting everyone wanted him to drive for them but we always had our own team – right through to joining the BTCC. We did our own thing in the garage and

We got him on the phone to see where he was and he was at Silverstone – you could hear the cars in the background. He had made the decision that he wanted to be in motorsport and he worked at Rockingham as well. Then he told me SEAT were running a championship with £100,000 prize money and I think my initial reaction to it was ‘And?’. He said he www.insidebtcc.com

could win it and we were persuaded to put the team back together, which is what we did.

BTCC was still a huge step to take. So how difficult was the decision to get the BMW and make the step into touring cars?

Inside BTCC: Tony Jackson: Did you expect the SEAT Cupra Championship to go as well as it did? Tony Jackson: Did we have any expectations? Mat did, definitely. He was confident he could win it and my role was to get the team together and to get the car working as best we could. That was the challenge for us, and Mat delivered on track. I think he won 19 races in two years and the prize money was very helpful! Inside BTCC: Even with big prize money, moving into the

www.insidebtcc.com

We take it very seriously and didn’t go into it light heartedly. We knew we were going up against some of the best touring car teams in the world, and in that situation, you have to be confident in yourself that you know the basics and can deliver. The results speak for themselves and in 2007 at the first round, he was on the podium twice [although he was later excluded from race one for ignoring a black and orange flag – Ed]. He clearly had no qualms about his ability and we never worried about his ability.

Inside BTCC: As his dad, you expect him to win races but going up against teams like Triple Eight, WSR and Dynamics and against drivers like Jason Plato, Matt Neal and Fabrizio Giovanardi, did you think the results would come so quickly? Tony Jackson: We knew Mat was a championship winner in the SEATs and that that would translate into the BTCC. He’d already tested with SEAT thanks to his success in the Cupra Championship and had been on the pace, so we knew that if we provided the goods, he could do it. If we could give him a car at 90 per cent, we knew he could add the rest.

Maybe it came from being in a family team, but Mat could always drive around a problem. Back in 2007, he would come on the radio and say the car was doing something and our response would be to say ‘Okay Mat – well get on with it then’. At Oulton Park, ahead of his first win, we dropped the car off the jacks and Mat came on the radio and said ‘The dash and data has shut down’. We asked if the engine ran and when he said it did, we told him to think of it as a go-kart and to win. He held off Plato with no dash and won the race by feel. Maybe we should have switched it off more often! Mat has always been an exciting driver to watch and there was a lot of satisfaction involved. Whatever effort we put in,

Inside BTCC 13

Mat always added to it. Inside BTCC: He’s established himself as one of the top drivers in the series and had been in contention for the championship before, but it’s fair to say that it hasn’t always been easy… Tony Jackson: There is no such thing as an easy ride in the BTCC and anyone who thinks there is, is quite foolish. It is a challenge and it evolves all the time, even over the course of a season. You can think you are on top of things after a few rounds, but can be at the back of the pile a few races later. It is always moving and you have to be on top of your game and always aware of what could happen next.

Inside BTCC: Aside from the family team, he’s run with the likes of RML and Motorbase. How much has he been able to develop from working with those kind of teams. Tony Jackson: When he first left the family team and moved to RML, it brought him on no end. He always could understand the car well but it allowed him to take that next step. Alongside his racing commitments, he is now a test driver with McLaren, which is an indication of how he can work on car development as engineers need to know that they can trust the information that is being fed back to them by a driver. Inside BTCC:

Inside BTCC 14

What is the career highlight? Tony Jackson: It has to be the BTCC wins. We don’t forget the karting wins and the trophies are on display in the workshop but the highlight has to be 2008 with BMW Dealer Team UK when he finished second to Giovanardi. It was the sum of a lot of effort to get there. Inside BTCC: This season has been a tough one, but what do you expect in the remainder?

potential has been a bit elusive for the team. I feel for them, as they have worked so hard on the car and are so passionate, and it takes it out of a team when they don’t get the results that they expect. We’ve seen the car on the pace and then for no reason, it isn’t as quick. But they are getting closer and I’m sure we’ll see much better results moving forwards. The championship is out of reach but there is the chance to put in some strong drives, and to add more podiums, which Mat is dying to do.

but of course the car was brand new on the eve of the season, so it’s important that the car is completely ready for the start of next year.

However, just days later, he was unveiled as the driver of Airwaves Racing’s third NGTC-spec Ford Focus for the last three rounds of the year.

“I’m a racer so it’s always tough to make a decision that means we won’t be racing for the rest of the year, but if it gives both the team and I the best possible chance of winning in 2014 then it has to be the right decision.

Onslow-Cole joined Team Hard at the start of the year to drive its new VW Passat and scored podium finishes at both Thruxton and Croft with the new car. However, with the team having to carry out development of the NGTCspec machine on race weekends, Onslow-Cole took the decision not to compete at Rockingham, Silverstone and Brands Hatch as the team works on developing the car. “When you look at the project things started really well with the VW Passat,” he said. “To score podiums in one of the first events of the season was great, but it has been tough to develop the car over race weekends. Ideally we needed to have had a full testing programme www.insidebtcc.com

“I would like to thank Tony and everyone at Team HARD for what they’ve achieved so far this season and hopefully the team will produce the tools to fight at the front on a consistent basis next year. “Obviously this turn of events negates our longterm deal and puts me in a position where I need to reassess my future in the BTCC. Hopefully we can look at the situation when the dust has settled and the team’s plans for 2014 are clear.” That reassessment did not take long, as the Airwaves news soon followed. “Wow, it’s been an emotional week of ups and downs”,

he said. “I’m so happy to be back on the grid and I am ever thankful to David [Bartrum] and everyone at Airwaves that made this possible.” “Motorbase are a great team and I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on the Ford Focus NGTC. Unfortunately there isn’t the chance to test before Rockingham but with the help of Mat, Aron and the team I’m sure I’ll get up to speed quickly.” Airwaves Racing boss David Bartrum has come close to running Onslow-Cole in the BTCC previously and is pleased with the way the deal worked out. “We’ve been approached by quite a few people in regards to the third NGTC car, and I wanted to put it out for the right type of driver. To suddenly find Tom available was both quite a shock and at the same time a nice surprise as he’s the perfect fit with our team. I am over the moon that I’ve been able to put together what could be possibly be the strongest driver line up in the BTCC.”

EVENTFUL FEW DAYS SEES ONSLOW-COLE JOIN AIRWAVES RACING replaced at Team HARD at Rockingham by Andy Wilmot, who will make his debut in the series at the wheel of the PPCGB/Kraftwerk Racing VW. The 32-year-old has previously competed in Ford Fiestas and the VW Cup, where he was the first driver to be signed by Tony Gilham when he created the team. “It’s the dream for any tin top driver to be in the BTCC,” he said. “I signed with Tony two years ago and it was always in the pipeline to progress from the VW Cup to the BTCC and I am just delighted to have been given this opportunity. “It’s great for my CV and hopefully something that will interest prospective sponsors as I’d love to be in the series full time next year. Of course the step up to the BTCC is huge and I won’t be putting too much pressure on myself. I’ll probably be anxious to try and score some points but I want to enjoy the experience and take it from there.”

NEWS IN BRIEF NEWS IN BRIEF NEWS IN BRIEF NEWS IN BRIEF Smith hit with penalty Aron Smith has become the third driver to be hit with a six place grid penalty for driving infringements after picking up two endorsements at Knockhill. The Airwaves Racing man was handed three points on his competition licence alongside a £500 fine for contact with Mike Bushell in the final race of the weekend in Scotland, and was also handed a separate reprimand for a clash with Warren Scott. Having previously picked up two points on his licence and a reprimand for an incident at Donington Park, Smith has become the latest driver to fall foul of the new regulation introduced this year whereby three penalties for incidents relating to driving standards automatically Inside BTCC 16

Fuller was due to compete in selected events this year in a Team HARD. The 21-year-old will drive the car that was previously raced by James

I’ll just approach it like it’s another race and I’ll be out to do the best job I can do.” Fuller was one of the drivers to test the Insignia during the two-day Dunlop tyre test at Snetterton during the summer break.

Having failed to put a programme together, Thorne said the time was now right to give up on hopes of a return. “We did our best but time has come to accept defeat and move on,” he said. “In the last few months we’ve been trying to gain some sponsors for the BTCC project but its proved a fruitless exercise and we’ve decided that empty promises just lead to raised - and then dashed – hopes, so we’ve decided to pull the plug on any future plans to come back into the BTCC.

GOFF AIMS TO BOUNCE BACK

Having been forced to miss the Knockhill rounds of the season, Jack Goff insists he is determined shine in the final three meetings of his maiden BTCC campaign… Jack Goff says he is keen to end his BTCC campaign on a high after the disappointment of being forced to miss the Knockhill weekend due to budget concerns. Those issues meant the reigning Renault Clio Cup champion was unable to compete in the three Scottish races, with newcomer Kieran Gallagher instead getting behind the wheel of the Team HARD.-run Vauxhall Insignia that Goff had raced through the opening six meetings of the season. Although not taking part himself, Goff still made the trip north to watch on from the sidelines but admitted it had been a painful experience to see someone else on track in ‘his’ car. “I knew it would be bad, but to be honest if felt okay during practice Inside BTCC 18

on Saturday,” he said. “However, when the car fired up for qualifying, that was when I realised just how gutted I was that I wasn’t taking part. Watching the car then head out to the grid on race day, I really, really wished I was out on track. “It’s not a nice feeling when you’ve been in a car all season and then someone else is there in your place, but the funds

just weren’t quite there.” The fact that Goff was forced to miss the Knockhill weekend was all the more galling given that the 22-year-old looked well set to shine in the second half of the year following a strong showing in mid-season testing at Snetterton. While the opening half of the year had yielded just a single top ten finish – in

round eight at Thruxton – there had been flashes of the speed that had carried Goff to the Clio title, which was then shown again during the two-day Dunlop tyre test. It ended with Goff third quickest behind the two works MGs in the hands of Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff, and that form was carried into the race weekend – where he took a personal best of eighth in qualifying. That gave the rookie a better qualifying average (up to that point) than Rob Austin, who would then go on to secure pole position in Scotland. Although race day didn’t provide the desired results, Goff admitted that the fact that the team was now starting to unlock the potential in the Insignia made the fact he was forced onto the sidelines even more difficult. www.insidebtcc.com

“The test day had been really good for us,” he reflected. “We didn’t quite have the car dialed in when we headed back to Snetterton for the race weekend, but we qualified well in P8 and it looked good for race day, although we had some reliability issues that held us back. That is something that happens in motorsport, and when it does, you just have to crack on with it. “There is no doubt that it’s been a massive challenge for me this season as my first go in the car was when we got to Brands Hatch so I had no chance to do any pre-season testing. It’s been a huge learning curve but we’ve been improving all the time.

heading in the right direction with the car. It is now becoming more competitive, which makes it more frustrating to have had to step aside.” Having been able to put the funds together for the final three rounds of the year, Goff will now return to action at Rockingham, where his aim will be to turn his potential on-track into points on the board to add to the 25 points

scored so far. “I think we’ve been unlucky,” he said when asked if he felt he had performed better this season than his points tally would suggest. “We’ve had a few DNFs because of reliability issues and have lost some points when we’ve been in a good position. There were also races like Thruxton where we got pole for race three

thanks to the reverse grid draw and then got taken off, which cost us points. We’ve certainly missed out on some top ten finishes, but you can always say ‘what if’ when you look back at things. “[However] I’m on track now and I’m raring to go! I obviously hope to be a front-runner in the BTCC in the future but for now it’s all about pushing for the rest of the year before coming back even stronger in 2014. “The next one is always the most important and I love Rockingham – I had two pole positions there last season and it’s a really great track. It suits my style and I seem to go well there so I am really looking forward to it.”

TITLE RACE HOTS UP IN SCOTLAND THIRD RACE EXCLUSION CASTS ONLY CLOUD ON TURKINGTON’S GLORIOUS WEEKEND

The eBay Motors driver enjoyed a superb weekend in Soctland, although it was marred by exclusion from the final race for a boost infringement on his BMW. Rob Austin started from pole position after topping qualifying for the www.insidebtcc.com

first time in the WIX Racing Audi. He led the race into SEAT Curve on the opening lap but quickly came under pressure from Turkington in second. The eBay Motors driver challenged for the lead at the end of lap one, before making the pass at the hairpin on lap two. That change at the front also allowed Gordon Shedden, Jason Plato and Matt Neal to close in and saw the top five all running together. Neal and Plato clashed at Clark’s on the third lap, with Plato just managing to hold on to his

Meanwhile, Gordon Shedden made the most of his intimate knowledge of the Knockhill track, passing Austin’s Audi when he braked a fraction of a second earlier than the Honda for the chicane. Austin stuck with Shedden – all the way to the end of the race in fact – but couldn’t find a way past. The safety car was called upon on lap nine after Paul O’Neill, racing

I took it. I was pleased to get in the lead and then I just got my head down. You never want to see the safety car come out when you’re leading the race, but it didn’t cause me too much trouble. It’s great to get another win.” RACE TWO Colin Turkington clinched a double BTCC victory for the second time this year at Knockhill, leading from lights to flag in race two.

FIRST BTCC POLE FOR ROB AUSTIN Rob Austin claimed the first BTCC pole position for the NGTC-spec Audi at Knockhill, setting a new lap record in the process. It also marked the first time that an Audi had qualified on pole position for the BTCC since Frank Biela in 1997. Austin’s time of 52.471 seconds put him quickest of the pack and saw him start Sunday’s first race from pole position, ahead of Colin Turkington in second. Turkington topped the times early in the session, but it was Andrew Jordan who sat on provisional pole for longest period of time. The Pirtek racing driver was top of the pile when the session was red flagged to allow the repair of a tyre barrier that had been clattered by contact from

Warren Scott’s Volkswagen Passat CC. There was more than half of the session left at that point, with Jordan ahead of Turkington and Plato. Austin had other ideas though, putting in his best time in the closing stages of the session. Turkington followed Austin across the line into second, while Jordan was third fastest. However, Jordan would start the first race from ninth after the application of a penalty picked up last time out at Snetterton. Jordan’s demotion promoted Shedden to third and Jason Plato to fourth. Matt Neal and Adam Morgan filled the third row, with Wrathall and Tordoff on row four.

the barrier at the Arnold Clark chicane after its suspension broke. With the top three looking tough to challenge at the front, the first position really up for grabs was fourth. Jason Plato seemed to be struggling for pace and came under pressure from Rob Collard. The second eBay Motors driver took fourth away from Plato on lap 11. He may have hoped to join his teammate on the podium, but he just couldn’t catch Shedden for third. At the end of the 24-lap race, it was a second victory for

Turkington, ahead of Austin – his best result so far in the Audi. Shedden held on to third, with Collard fourth and Neal fifth. Andrew Jordan finished in sixth, ahead of Jason Plato. The MG’s relative lack of pace showed when he was passed by Neal and Jordan at the consecutively on lap 13.

Sam Tordoff finished eighth, ahead of Mat Jackson in ninth and Dave Newsham in tenth.

Andrew Jordan took victory in the third race at Knockhill, closing the gap to championship leader Matt Neal to just six points. There was drama after the race as eBay Motors’ Colin Turkington was

excluded from his fourth place finish as a result of his BMW exceeding its permitted boost level during the race. Jordan started the race from pole position and held on to the lead off the line, ahead of Rob Collard. The top six finishers

from race two were reversed to form the grid for race three, which left double winner from earlier in the day, Colin Turkington, in sixth place. Having already had two wins and a second place in the same weekend back at Croft, the only way for Turkington to better it would be

to take an historic triple victory. However, it wasn’t to be for Turkington. The eBay Motors driver did not have the pace to challenge the Hondas in front of him as the race went on. Turkington made it up to fourth place when he passed Rob Austin on lap three, but he never really looked like catching or passing Neal in third. Jordan was quick at the front and won’t have like seeing the safety car boards when they appeared at the end of lap eight. Warren Scott’s stricken Volkswagen was deemed to be in a dangerous position and required recovery. Jordan saw his lead disappear instantly, but it didn’t cause the Pirtek Racing driver too much trouble, as he was able to open up an advantage again once racing resumed. Rob Collard sat second behind Jordan, but

came under pressure from Neal. The Honda Racing driver claimed second place on lap 19. That made it two Hondas at the front, followed by two BMWs. That was the story through to the chequered flag. Jordan took the win, ahead of Neal, while Collard claimed the final podium spot ahead of teammate Turkington, who was subsequently excluded. Rob Austin’s fifth place became fourth, while Jason Plato’s disappointing weekend concluded with a fifth place finish. Dan Welch took sixth place, ahead of Mat Jackson and Nick Foster. Adam Morgan and Will Bratt rounded out the top ten. With nine races remaining, Matt Neal leads the championship with 193 points, ahead of Jordan (287), Shedden (266), Turkington (263) and Plato (238).

FORMULA FORD GB Dan Cammish could become a championship winner at Rockingham if he is able to maintain his form in the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain. Cammish made it 21 wins from 21 starts at Knockhill to extend his lead and could now wrap up the title with two meetings still to run if things go his way in Corby. Currently 199 points clear of nearest challenger Nico Maranzana, Cammish will be champion if that advantage is at least 185 points at the end of the weekend, with a touring car test with Motorbase all but secured already. www.insidebtcc.com

With Cammish widely expected to wrap up the crown, much of the focus will be on the fight behind, with Maranzana just a point clear of Harrison Scott in the fight for second place. Both have shown the potential to get ahead of Cammish on track but have so far failed to capitalise, with both hoping to be the person who ends the champion elect’s winning run. Behind Juan Rosso in fourth, a single point also covers the fight for fifth between Sam Brabham and James Abbott while a number of drivers will also be keen to

impress as they seek to secure the Mazda Road To Indy prize of an all-expenses-paid trip to the USA to take a free full-day test in a USF2000 single-seater, as well as a further full day’s testing in a Pro Mazda car. Maranzana, Scott, Rosso, Abbott, Andy Richardson, Lassi Halminen, Camren Kaminsky and Jayde Kruger are the drivers who have nominated themselves for the award, the winner of which will be chosen by a panel of judges from both the UK and USA.

ROCKINGHAM PREVIEW

With three rounds and nine races still to run, the BTCC now heads for Rockingham for the seventh round of the season, with the five-way fight for the championship crown set for further twists and turns on the first of two trips to Northamptonshire.

Pics: PSP Images

Despite again seeing his championship lead cut last time out in Scotland, Matt Neal continues to be the man to beat as the field heads to Corby although Andrew Jordan sits only six points behind having taken his fourth success of the year in the final race at Knockhill. Maximum ballast on his car is likely to hurt Neal on the high-speed Rockingham oval, although he’ll hope that the impressive handling of his NGTC Honda Civic will enable him to be strong on the tricky infield section.

Inside BTCC 38

Neal has four wins at Rockingham in the past, but hasn’t tasted success since taking a double win back in 2010. Adding to his tally this time around would be the perfect way in which to try and put further daylight between himself and Jordan – who will be seeking his first Rockingham win. The Pirtek Racing man took points out of Neal in Scotland despite carrying a six place grid penalty into the weekend. Already this season, the youngster

has doubled his career win tally with four victories to his name and if he can maintain the form he has displayed in recent meetings, Jordan could yet come away from the weekend with his name in lights on top of the pile. Behind the top two, Gordon Shedden will be eager to maintain his recent run of form at the only circuit on the calendar to run anticlockwise, with the defending champion having won three

times in the past two years. That included a dramatic double win last year in treacherous weather conditions, and followed his ‘save of the season’ moment when his Honda was almost going backwards around the turn one oval when it suddenly snapped sideways in heavy rain. Shedden sits third going into the weekend, but only after Colin Turkington’s exclusion from the final race at Knockhill saw him drop back behind the Scot in the title race. The eBay Motors man is arguably the form driver in the field with four wins in the last nine races, a figure that could have been higher had it not been for his well documented clashes on track in two of the races at Snetterton following the summer break. Rockingham is one circuit on the calendar where Turkington has yet to taste victory, although the same www.insidebtcc.com

can’t be said for the final one of the five men seen as the real championship contenders. MG’s Jason Plato has won more races than anyone else at ‘The Rock’ with five wins, including one in each of the last four seasons. Despite the fact that his Triple Eight-run car is firmly established as one of the quickest in the field, Plato has only taken one podium finish in the last ten races, with four no-scores in the same period having seen him lose ground in the standings. A strong showing at Rockingham is vital if he is to reduce

his current 54 point deficit to arch rival Neal in the standings. Plato’s MG team-mate Sam Tordoff is amongst the drivers still to be mathematically in contention for the title, although a more realistic aim for the rookie remains to cement his place in the top six, with Adam Morgan having closed to within 17 points of the former Porsche racer in Scotland. Behind them, Airwaves Racing pair Aron Smith and Mat Jackson will both want to impress after another tough weekend at Knockhill – although Smith will have to deal with a six

place grid penalty to be applied after qualifying. Namesake Jeff Smith rounds out the top ten and is set to return to action after missing Knockhill, with the Pirtek Racing man eager to ensure there is no repeat of his heavy accident of twelve months ago. Outside the top ten, Rob Austin and Rob Collard will both hope to build on their podium results at Knockhill at a circuit where their rear-wheel drive cars are expected to be strong, while Toyota man Frank Wrathall will hope that he can replicate the kind of form that has given him the Rockingham lap record to kick-start his season. man to beat and could wrap up the title if things go his way. The Vauxhall Vectra driver has ten wins to his name, four ahead of closest rival Liam Griffin, and will become the winner of the inaugural title if he can take a hat-trick of wins in Northamptonshire. Griffin heads into the weekend on the back of a double success at Knockhill and will hope to keep his title hopes alive, while James Kaye remains in contention but is the rank outside in the AmDTuning.com Honda Civic – needing to win every race left to stand a chance of lifting the crown himself.
