The second incident happened about 1.30pm on Saturday when the ambulance service called in the team to help recover a man who had suffered from a heart attack in the woods opposite the Falcon Inn on the A171.

Police later spoke to the man at his home. So far this year, the team has carried out 26 rescues. Georgina Taylor, the team secretary and an incident controller, said the organisation

Adidas Terrex C2C challenge

'On behalf of the Team I would like to give a big thank you to Helen Priestley for organising the Summer raffle making a healthy profit of approximately £200. Well done Helen thank you'

The Adidas Terrex Coast to Coast is one of the ultimate Adventure Sports challenges in the UK. Competitors complete a mix of Kayaking, Swimming, Running and Biking.

Thanks go to all team members and friends who helped with the Wykeham Whizz & East Ayton Gala we made some money and lots of good will at these events.

The kayaking takes place in the Sea at St Bees, as well as in the Rivers and Lakes of the Lake District – The lengths of Buttermere, Thirlmere and Ullwater, then there’s a swim across Derwent Water. The running stages are not your standard distances on the flat, but steep climbs up the likes of Helvellyn, Robinson and closer to home, Carlton Bank.

We will be attending same next year please lookout for the dates on the calendar as we do need more help at these events. We recently had a MAF meeting and some good ideas for fundraising were discussed again. We need all to give some time to help implement events. Those present at the Filey Emergency Services Show will remember what a great draw this is for visitors to Filey. We were well represented and a lot of interest was created by our display. Next year we are planning a short demonstration at the show it is hoped to present this twice during the event. I have put myself up to organise the demonstration so of course I will be looking for at least ten team members to help with the event. Do try to keep this date free to help out, thanks and more information later. Regards Peter H. Footnotes: From Drew and Andy Helmsley street collection £383.30, Donation from the rescue in Dalby £50, Bridlington Emergency services day around £100, NYMBO £385, Wykeham Wizz £124, Filey Emergency services day £113, Ayton Gala £134. From me thanks to Peter for being the first contributor to the reborn newsletter which makes my job easier.

It was the Biking however that brought the race to its conclusion in our patch on Monday 29th August and Myself, Roger and Pete were there to show support and raise the team’s profile. We arrived at Glaisdale in MJ53 for 8am and helped the race organisers with some final preparations and then looked after the parking of the support vehicles as they arrived and prepared to meet their competitors. There were both individual entries and team entries. The organisers had brought their own medical support in the form of Cas-Carers from some of the Lakes teams and our role was to loosely shadow the race from Glaisdale to its conclusion in Robin Hoods Bay. It looked like a great event and it was great to be a small part of it. One final thought, lots of the competitor’s support vehicles had MR stickers and we discovered that there were a number of entries from MR team members. Strangely, we didn’t see any from our team, still who knows, maybe next year . . . . . . Mike Woodcock (not to be outdone by Peter)

NYMBO Moors Marathon

-4-

The North Yorkshire Mountain Bike Orienteering Moors Marathon event was run this month. A link to the full report is below however key points are that the event donated ÂŁ385 to the team, Andy and Georgina provided a presence at the event with MJ53 (and ended up marshalling !) and Graeme came a respectable 6th on his course. http://www.bmbo.org.uk/results/report.php?event _id=234

Media coverage We have had at least three articles published in the local press this month. Two in the Whitby Gazette, one relating to the Search in Sandsend late August and one relating to the Whitby Emergency Services day. The Gazette and Herald report on our mass callouts is reproduced on page one of this newsletter. Thanks to Andy and Georgina for putting it together in my absence. We have appeared in multiple internet based newsletters and where I have seen these I have added a link to them on our public Facebook page. The recent ‘Twirlies’ Coast to Coast walk to raise funds for MRE&W has an article in the latest Paramo Hill and Mountain catalogue where we get favourable coverage. Thanks for spotting it Russ. Mike Pannett, in advertising his latest book, is suggesting the five North Yorkshire search and rescue teams as deserving causes.

Notices Due to work pressures Chris has reluctantly had to stand down as equipment officer. As a result we are urgently looking for someone to be co-opted into the role, names to any committee member please. In the interim please report any equipment issues to Andy.

We now have 191 followers on twitter and 116 fans on Facebook. Each submission to Facebook gets in excess of 300 views and we average 16,500 page views per month. If anyone see press coverage of the team then please drop me details.

MJ22 with map and compass

A reminder for all team drivers to complete a declaration form and have the form, with both parts of their drivers licence, witnessed by a committee member. Team issue climbing helmets are due for annual inspection please present them to one of the testers at the next event you attend. North Yorkshire Police joined the National Policy for MR th personal accident insurance on the 8 of September. More detail to come from the committee but the cover is as least as good as that previously arranged by NYP and should simplify arrangements if (when) we deploy to support other forces or emergency services.
