La misma pregunta, pero aplicada a Big Pauper. // Same question as above, but applied to Big Pauper. Big Pauper llegó cuando quise distanciarme de los mashups un poco. Big Pauper es más como mi espíritu. A parte de ser una referencia amable a Biggie, Big Pauper puede ser interpretado de varias maneras: como un artista en una sociedad decepcionante y suicida que ya no reverencia al artista, me encuentro renderizado como un “pauper” (indigente) por defecto. O apuesto por una empresa capitalista (como la discográfica que destrocé) o me muero de hambre con una guitarra en la mano. Big Pauper came along when I wanted to distance myself from the mash-up stuff a bit. Big Pauper is more true to my spirit. Aside from being a friendly jab at Biggie, Big Pauper can be interpreted a few ways: as an artist in an everdisappointing and suicidal society that no longer reveres the artist, I find myself rendered a pauper by default. Either I get behind a capitalist venture (like the label I ran in to the ground) or I starve to death with a guitar in my hand.
Controller 7 de Anticon publicó un mash-up divertido de 12 pulgadas que fue un éxito. Mi mejor amigo y comp-art-ñero, Brad Hamers, publicó un par de cosas de Token Recluse también. Cerramos al principio de este año, y lo dimos todo, publicando el primer álbum de Brad en solitario, “Post No Dream”. Es impresionante. Controller 7 of Anticon put out a fun mash-up twelve inch through us that did really well. My best friend and long time art-ner in crime, Brad Hamers put out a couple of releases on TR as well. We just closed down shop earlier this year and we went out on a high note with Brad’s first solo record in five years, “Post No Dream.” It’s phenomenal.

Eres artista, músico y fundador de una discográfica (Token Recluse). ¿Tienes una preferencia profesional? // You’re an artist, musician and the founder of Token Recluse. Do you have a professional preference? Why or why not?
Regardless of my hesitancy to properly function in a destructive and cancerous system, I always seem to squeak by semi-comfortably with a grill on my teeth or a slice of turkey in my belly. Balance settlements, personal loans and taxes that conflict all seem to appear and disappear (or get ignored). You too can get a loan from the government to water your lawn, etc, etc. I’m still working on finding my place in this mess. I’m attempting to live more within my means these days, with a manageable level of rampant hypocrisies and compromised ideals.
My preference is as an artist, whatever that art may be… music, cut n’ paste collage, running from loan sharks, block printing, circuit bent video, gardening, climbing a mountain, making banana bread… I wouldn’t know how to get down any other way. My principals make for a terrible businessman.
¿Cómo empezaste Token Recluse Recordings? // How did you come up with Token Recluse Recordings?
O Portland es un lugar frio y socialmente torpe o me he hecho un tío frio y socialmente torpe a los veinte y algo. Creo que soy yo, o un poco de las dos cosas. De todas las formas, durante los últimos cinco años, Portland a sido un sitio raro para mi. He sido expuesto a gente, lugares y arte muy influyente… pero no creo que siga siendo lo mío. Estoy preparado para irme y ver como me influye otro ambiente. No estoy intentando morder la mano de Portland que me da de comer, quiero muchas cosas de esta ciudad, pero he tenido una oportunidad un poco revuelta aquí.
Empezó como un “proyecto de producción colaborativa” en el 2000, donde colaboraba con varios músicos y publicaba los resultados en la web de manera gratuita. Ese proyecto finalmente evolucionó a una discográfica más tradicional para mis propios mixtapes, break records y proyectos de remix. Después se unieron unas personas muy majas para publicar un par de cosas. Unconventional Science publicó un LP buenísimo de hip-hop instrumental con nosotros, llamado, “Social Capitol”. It started off as a “collaborative production project” back in 2000, where I would collaborate with various musicians and publish the results for free from the site. That project eventually evolved in to a more traditional vanity label for my own mix tapes, break records and remix projects. Later on some great folks joined up for a couple of releases. Mi preferencia es ser artista, lo que sea ese arte… música, collages de cortar y pegar, correr de prestamistas, impresión con bloques, vídeo con circuitos doblados, jardinería, escalar una montaña, hacer bizcocho de plátano… no sabría vivir de otra manera. Mis principios hacen que sea un pésimo hombre de negocios.
¿Crees que vivir en Portland (estado de Oregón, EEUU) influye tu música? // Do you think that living in Portland, OR plays an important role in your music? Why or why not?
Either Portland is a cold and socially awkward place or I have grown cold and socially awkward in my mid twenties. I think it’s just me, or a little of both rather. Either way the last five years in Portland have been a weird fit for me. I’ve definitely been exposed to some influential people, places and inspiring art out here… but I don’t think it’s really working anymore. I am ready to move on and see how a new environment influences me. I’m not trying to bite the Portland hand that feeds me, I love a lot of things about Portland, I’ve just had a pretty mixed go at it here.
