Hampshire Scouts provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for over 17,500 young people aged 6-25, promoting the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the individual, helping them achieve their full potential. In Scouting, we believe that young people develop most when they are ‘learning by doing,’ when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.

I’ve just returned from an amazing time visiting an Explorer Expedition to The Gambia.

Families come here to collect water, children to meet new friends, and Scouts to find a purpose in life.

Based at Kaira Konko Scout Lodge in Soma and led by Jackie Heath and Paul Stubbington from Magellan Explorer Scout Unit, the expedition comprised 34 Explorers and 9 Leaders from New Forest North, Itchen South, Rotherfield, and Andover.

It’s also an ideal base for a first Scout expedition to Africa, since it is provides a supported environment and strong connections with the local community. Lamin Kinteh, the manager, is well-respected in Soma and The Gambia, and seems to know everyone. There have been a number of Explorer Scout expeditions to Kaira Konko from Copythorne, Bentley, and around the UK – and there is the potential for more trips during the English winter and Gambian dry season. Looking back on how Kaira Konko came about and the many hurdles it has overcome over the years, we concluded that “it is written” that the Scout Lodge would be built.

I made the trip for three reasons Firstly, I wanted to experience an international community development expedition, and see differences it can make to people. Hampshire Scouting has a long tradition of international expeditions, and this year over 300 Explorer Scouts will travel abroad with Scouting. The Gambia is one of the poorest nations in Africa, and this is especially so up-country where we were. Although intermittent electricity has now reached Soma, many families are living at subsistence level, collecting water in the morning from pumps or taps, cooking on open fires, and crowded together to sleep in crumbling buildings of mud bricks and corrugated iron roofs. Yet despite this, the Gambians are very welcoming and friendly, the community is much stronger than it is in England, and children’s laughter is everywhere. Along with Gambian Scouts, we built walls at the schools, distributed mosquito nets, and repainted the mosque. Despite the enormous culture shock, the Explorer Scouts adapted to their new environment very well, and you could see them change as they made friends with the Gambian Scouts, played with the children, and became people who cared about the world. Secondly, I wanted to visit Kaira Konko. I had heard so much about this Scout Centre, which grew out of a promise many years ago by Marion Christmas to Lamin Kinteh, and it is now five buildings around the compound providing a range of indoor accommodation, a kitchen, a dining hall, showers (sometimes), and a crew room for the local Scouts.

Lastly, I made the trip to Kaira Konko to mark 25 years of friendship between Hampshire Scouting and Gambian Scouting, and present a very well-deserved Chief Scout’s Personal Award to Lamin Kinteh. The story started in December 1989 with a HSX expedition to The Gambia and a friendship between Paul Christmas, Marion’s son, and Lamin Kinteh, then a Gambian Scout. Following a visit by Lamin and other Gambian Scouts to Hampshire, and with vast fundraising by Marion and her team and project management by Lamin, a patch of dusty land became a Scout Centre, and inspired the wider links from Hampshire schools, Winchester University, and Hampshire Fire Brigade with Soma and The Gambia. We marked the anniversary with a performance by the Kaira Konko Scout Band, speeches, a joint campfire, and in traditional African style by killing a goat and having a feast. I think a quote from Robert Kennedy captures well the spirit of Kaira Konko, and what has achieved both for Soma and for Hampshire – “Some men see things that are and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not ?”

Local Knowledge Activity Badge To gain this badge, Cub Scouts must complete three of the following: 1, Either: a, Find out about a famous person, past or present, who lived in or near where you live. b, Visit and find out about a famous old building, monument, earthworks or other place of historical interest. In either case, discuss what you have found out with your Leader and/or other Cub Scouts. 2, Find out the meaning of, and collect pictures of, either your County, Borough, District, town or village coat of arms. Tell a leader in how many different places you have seen the coat of arms displayed.

As part of the Local Knowledge badge Terry Hamer the Charter Town Crier (also District Exec member) visited 1st Romsey Cubs to tell them all about his profession. There are only 103 town criers in the country so the local community is lucky to have a man to shout about the towns events. Each cry is limited to 110 words which should take about 8 minutes to deliver. Terry was appointed in 2006 at a competition held at the Mayors Picnic. He has taken the exams to allow him to wear the Loyal Company of Town Criers & The Ancient & Honourable Guild of Town Criers badges on his livery. The town decided to have a blue coat so his arrival would not upstage the Mayor who wears red. The evening ended with all the Cubs getting the chance to ring a bell and shout at the top of their voices.

3, Talk to someone who has lived in your local area for a long time. Find out about what life was like when they were young and what changes they have seen in your local area over the intervening years. 4, Draw a map of your area and mark on it places of interest. 5, With other Cub Scouts, go on a short walk in your local area. Point out to the leader any features of interest. 6, Visit a local emergency services station such as police, fire, ambulance services, coastguard or mountain rescue. Find out how the station is run.

Activity | Winter wildlife tracking Snow, mud, dust or sand are perfect for seeking out animal tracks and discovering what sort of wildlife is about. So play close attention on your walks this winter and teach your Scouts how to spot signs of animals as you venture out into the wild. Telltale signs of wildlife are all around us if you know where and how to look. Spotting animal tracks and signs makes Scouts more observant and appreciative of the natural world. It’s easy to get involved by teaching them these common identifiers.

Wildlife Identifier Teach your Scouts these footprints of common UK mammals

Activity For younger sections, why not integrate more nature-awareness into the programme with the following? 1. Split your section into supervised groups and head off in different directions, then meet up for a show and tell session. Take resealable plastic bags to collect specimens. Good hygiene and hand-washing should be practised after handling specimens. 2. Create a nature table at your Scout HQ. Keep nonperishable items that you find throughout the year and build up a collection. Encourage the Scouts to contribute items that they find in their own time. 3. Create a checklist of tracks and signs for each Scout to find throughout the year. Help them tick things off by running nature trails.

Let us know how you get on. Post pics of your finds on our Facebook page:

www.facebook.com/scoutassociation

Taken from: http://scouts.org.uk/news

Tracks or footprints These are the most obvious signs of animals. Wet mud is a great place to find prints. Look in muddy areas, and around the edges of puddles and pools, where you may find evidence of birds and small mammals. Areas of fine soil, sand or dust often hold tracks, but snow is probably the best medium for spotting prints. Even in urban areas you’re likely to find tracks of cats, dogs, hedgehogs, crows, pigeons, blackbirds and foxes.

Runs and racks These are the trails used by animals. Rabbits create runs through long grass and hedges, while deer will create trails called racks when crossing ditches.

to Robbie, Senior Patrol Leader with 3rd New Forest East Scouts. The award is being presented by Ted Brand, Group Scout Leader for the same Scout Group as Robbie. Congratulations to Robbie for his outstanding effort to achieve the Chief Scout Award. This award is not easily gained and is the highest award available in the Scout section. It has taken Robbie many years to work through the challenges required by the award. These challenges are both physical and mental involving time and effort while at Scouts, but also Robbie’s own time away from the Scout group.

As part of the Romsey late night shopping evening a team of hard working volunteers organised a lantern parade through the town. The pack had an artist visit for 2 meetings to help make and cover the lanterns as part of a community project. We were tasked with decorating the creations with trees to make the forest for Red Riding Hood as part of the pantomime theme. Matthew took the microphone from the compere in the Market Place to explain we were from 1st Romsey Cubs. Wellow Cubs also took part and were singing on route.

1 Aldershot Scouts st

Five Scouts and two leaders from 1st Aldershot Scout troop spent the morning helping to check Christmas gifts for children in developing countries on Saturday 29th November. More than 113 million boys and girls in over 130 cou ntries have been helped via the idea of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child (part of the Christian Charity Samaritan’s Purse). 2014 was 1st Aldershot Scouts first involvement with the charity. One of the volunteers from the warehouse had visited the troop in October to explain to them what goes in a shoebox, where is goes and who gets the presents. They also heard about Maureen’s trip as a volunteer out to Africa and her experiences of giving the shoeboxes out to the children. The Scouts were inspired and started collecting shoebox gifts at home for Operation Christmas Child. On Friday 7th November the Scouts brought the items they had collected into the Scout hut and started packing boxes (which would later go to the warehouse). They arranged the gifts brought in into categories and ensured that every box had the necessary GIFTS (Games, Insulation, Furry friend, Toys, Stationery). The youngsters

enjoyed decorating the shoeboxes and filling them with cuddly toys, toothpaste, hats, gloves and other items for their donation and managed to fill 10 boxes full of gifts and presents. The youngsters then had the opportunity to help out at the Operation Christmas Child warehouse (in Peasmarsh) where they helped to check the contents of shoeboxes to ensure they had the relevant items (and to ensure they could get through customs). Kendra, Harry, James, Ethan and Thomas got involved straight away, firstly checking their own boxes then moving onto the huge pile of other shoeboxes that other people had kindly donated. After a busy morning, the Scouts joined the other volunteers (including a few other Scouts and Brownies groups) to wave off the lorries filled with completed shoebox gifts. The lorries will travel to developing countries such as Romania and young boys and girls between 2 and 14 will be receiving the gifts. Jenny and Heather (founders of the charity) thanked all the volunteers for their time and mentioned how happy they were with how well everything had went this year and the amount of donations they had received.

Southampton Scouts, Rozanna, 16 and Jake,18 have been dancing to raise funds to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree held in Kirarahama, Japan in the Summer. Jake and Rozy have been dancing with Wickham Morris since they were old enough to hold a hankie. They are now experienced dancers who join the side at festivals, fetes, charity events and local pubs. Jake thoroughly enjoys dancing, “It’s good to keep the English Traditional Dances alive”. Rozy explains that, ‘it’s a great way to keep fit and brings a smile to lots of people’. Each year Wickham Morris donates the money from its collection buckets, to date they have raised over £35,000 for good causes. This year the Scouts shared the proceeds with Hamble Life Boats. Rozanna has been selected from hundreds of Scouts and Explorer Scouts to represent The Southampton District at the International youth event. Jake, who will be too old to attend as a participant, has been selected as one of the many volunteers who will

be helping to run the International camp. The brother and sister from Endeavour Explorer Scouts in Southampton need to raise over £3,000 each to attend the jamboree; part of the fees will support Scouts from other nationalities who are not able to afford the cost. The World Scout Jamboree 2015 will unite young people from 150 countries all around the world. The theme for the camp is ‘Wa’ meaning harmony, unity, friendship and peace; allowing a ‘spirit of unity’; to share others’ cultures and faiths; take part in adventurous activities, and to grow as global citizens. During the Jamboree participants will visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Japan. Dancers from Wickham Morris presented a cheque for £700 “We wish our young members well with the remainder of their fundraising. We hope also that they share our rich culture at the Jamboree enabling World Scouts to experience some English Morris Dancing.”

Do you have an interest in video, illustration, photography or graphic design. Get involved in a new creative idea to ‘transform’ the fleur-de-lis into a series of playful, dynamic and personalised imagery to illustrate the breadth of what Scouting means to our youth members. We’ll use the imagery on national youthfaced social media channels and the fleur-de-lis is the jumping off point for ideas. Create an image of an object(s), scene, typography or person but incorporate the fleur-delis shape. The subject matter can be anything so long as it’s related to the following broad themes: action; adventure; fun and friendship; diversity; youthful and youth-shaped; challenging; interaction; teaching or passing on skills; inspiring; teamwork and leadership; positive impact; determination. Send your creative images to: communications@scouts.org.uk

Are you a youth member of Scouting? You can convey firsthand the fun, challenge, adventure and global citenenship that Scouting offers. As is tradition for HSX, December saw the group once again converge on Ferny Crofts Scout Activity Centre for our annual Christmas celebrations. Saturday morning saw participants divide into 6 teams for the annual adventure race, a 3 hour orienteering race across the New Forest with teams trying to gain as many points as possible. This year the race was “expertly” organised by Andy Humphreys, Josh Hicks and Alan Braithwaite, who had promised us a slightly different event from years gone by. One by one the teams converged at the back of the Mountbatten Lodge for the 10:00 start time for the race, provided with map for each pair, and given a quick briefing. Unlike previous years, we were told the finish of the race wasn’t to be as simple as expected, with the finish line being at Ferny Crofts legendary Assault Course! At 10:00 the klaxon sounded and the teams dispersed, each heading in their different directions, depending on their chosen route choice. The routes that were chosen where varied this year, and unlike in previous years, it didn’t seem possible to get around the entire course within the allotted time, so route strategy would prove criterial to gain maximum points (and more importantly avoid the dreaded 2nd place!!!). Around 13:00 the teams soon began arriving at the assault course, absolutely cream cracked after the last few hours’ exertion, only to be told we weren’t finished yet… Brilliant! One by one we were briefed that the final element to the race would be a time circuit of the course in our teams, with 30 points available for the fastest time, 20 points for 2nd place and 10 points for the third fastest time. Having put in a good shift in the run, we all knew it would be important to dig deep for one last push… easier said than done, when you’ve already covered around 15miles!!! Upon completing our laps, we each headed back to the Lodge for a cup

of tea, chow down some lunch and thaw out with a ‘warm shower’… well Ferny Crofts version of a warm shower! The afternoon was passed comparing routes, decorating the hall and preparing dinner… a 4 course banquet! In the late afternoon the numbers swelled, as we were joined by more HSX members as well as our special guests! As the atmosphere grew we were invited to take our seats, and one by one the courses were served. The evening was spent catching up with friends, swapping stories, and more importantly conceiving plans for adventures in 2015 and beyond! Right on cue, our illustrious leader MC Kinger took to the stage for the usual Karaoke, which continued late into the night… and well into Sunday morning!! After a monumental tidying effort on Sunday morning, we all gather for the HSX Christmas forum… our annual meeting to reflect on the achievements of the last 12 months, inform the group of the progress made behind the scene and our plans for the up-coming year! Towards the end of the forums we had presentations from Steve Knaggs on a sport climbing trip to Kloympnos in 2015, Bakewell outlined the plans for the 2016 expedition to Cambodia and Oliver Robinson also provided an update on the progress of the HSX Antarctica team. The forum also saw Chris Slater officially launch his plans for the Patagonia 2017 expedition. With much excitement and anticipation for the year ahead the forum closed, groups broke up for quick discussions on differing aspects brought up in the meeting. After lunch and tidying the hall we parted on our merry ways, excited for what lay ahead. If you’d like to know more about HSX or would like to sign up to one of our upcoming events please visit www.hsx.org.uk or e-mail: chris.slater@hsx.org.uk.
