The Census results are in – and they show that Hampshire Scouting grew by 3.6% last year. This is even faster growth than last year, and is the eighth successive year of growth for Hampshire Scouting. We’ve grown by 25% since 2005, and now stand at an amazing 21,166 members – the highest since 1995. We grew in every Section, grew numbers of both young people and adult volunteers, and grew in most Districts. So firstly, a big thank you to everyone, for everything you have done to contribute to this growth. I think there’s three big reasons that we’ve grown so much this year: •

We’re offering amazing adventures to young people – so they want to come back for more, and encourage their friends to join. Everywhere I go, I’m amazed to hear about the exciting activities young people are doing through Scouting, from Beavers doing sleep overs, to Cubs climbing mountains, to Scouts travelling abroad, to Explorers and Network members on expeditions.

Our investment in a County Development Officer over the past two years is really paying off, with 26 new Sections already opened enabling 313 more young people to enjoy Scouting. Our County Development Officer has been supported by a County Development Board, and they’ve been active in six of the seven fastest growing Districts, helping to recruit 152 new adult volunteers.

Districts are really getting behind the idea of growing Scouting, with Scout Groups being opened in new housing areas or where there are large waiting lists. Many Districts now also have Development Plans. Districts are also working closely with local Councils to promote the benefits of Scouting and to understand where future Scouting provision is needed.

Looking forward, how do we sustain and even increase this rate of growth? After all, we’ve set a target of reaching 25,000 youth members by 2018. •

Retention – we lose too many young people, especially between Cubs and Scouts, and between Scouts and Explorers. We need to improve linkage between Sections.

Strengthening Groups – we need to support and help Groups which aren’t growing, for example by ensuring we have a Group Scout Leader in every Group.

Continued Development – we have to continue our development investment and initiatives, opening new Groups and Sections, and recruiting adult volunteers.

But what do you think ? We’re always interested in your thoughts about Scouting in Hampshire – such as why Scouting is (or isn’t) growing in your local area, and what would really make a difference. Congratulations on a great year, and now let’s make 2013 even better!

Duchess of Cambridge

meets THE Queen’s Scouts

The Duchess of Cambridge greeted the National Review of Queen’s Scouts at Windsor Castle along with Chief Scout, adventurer, Bear Grylls. Despite being around six months pregnant, the duchess is now patron of seven organisations as well as being a volunteer with the Scout Association. Kate also welcomed this year’s adult award recipients. Bear said, Kate is an “‘incredible role model for Scouting”. Since Kate joined the Scouts last year, more than 2,800 new adult volunteers have joined up - the second biggest rise since 1986. The young adults who received the Queen’s Scouts award - the highest a Scout can gain - for achievements including carrying out regular community service for a year. During the day, Kate also met young people who had received gallantry awards after being nominated for their bravery and heroism in their everyday lives. Among those who received awards for their bravery was 17-year-old Lee Craven, from Hook, Hampshire. On one of the coldest days of last year, he helped drag a friend from an icy canal after he fell in the dark. ‘’It was pitch black but I managed to pull him to the side to safety. It was quite easy because of the adrenalin.’’ The annual celebration at Windsor Castle dates back 80 years. The Queen attended the event last year but was celebrating her 87th birthday privately. The 10th Farnborough Scout Group, which meets in Samuel Cody Specialist Sports College, recently celebrated it’s 40th birthday with an old fashioned birthday party. Over 60 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, Leaders, Group Executive members and former members of the Group attended the party at Our Lady and St Dominic’s Church in Cove. Scout Leader, Peter Lloyd organised an afternoon of games for the young people and everyone tucked in to a birthday tea. Group Secretary, Angela Martin, made a huge birthday cake which was cut by the youngest Beaver, a Cub and the eldest Scout. At the end of the afternoon Deputy District Commissioner, Mike Hughes, presented Beaver Leader, Helen Anderson, with her Award of Merit for outstanding service to Scouting. Helen, who is Mike’s daughter, has been a Leader with Cubs and Beavers for the last 17 years. She opened 10th’s Beaver Colony 12 years ago and it has gone from strength to strength with a current membership of 23 Beavers.

34 Cubs from 18 Districts took part in the 2013 County Cub Chess Competition held in Basingstoke. The standard of play was very high and the level of sportsmanship was excellent. Congratulations to William Vanlint from Basingstoke East District, who won the under 9½ trophy and to Ben Surtees from Winchester, who won the over 9½ trophy. Well done also to all those who took part. My thanks to Sue, Robert and Pat from Basingstoke West, who assisted with the event and to Joe and Paul from Basingstoke Chess Club, for running the afternoon and I extend my grateful thanks to you all. 48 excited Cub Scouts and Leaders congregated at 10th Romsey Scout Headquarters for the annual sixers day. At the start the morning training bases of knotting, compass, first aid, mapping, science and mini pioneering. The weather was good with virtually wall to wall sunshine all day, just the occasional cloud drifting across. The Cubs cooked their lunch on open fires under the guidance of leaders, then washing up and clearing away. The fun bases started with Cubs spending 30 minutes at each one. Kites, the gun run, archery, shooting, fencing and the ever popular water rockets with Cubs and Leaders getting pretty wet. There was a buzz all day with everyone enjoying being outside having great fun! The Cubs gave a big BRAVO as a thank you! Cubs all went home tired but happy to leave the Leaders to clear up after a very successful day once again. Jacky Betteridge District Cub Scout Leader


5 Portsmouth Scouts th

As part of the Global Conservation Badge, 5th Portsmouth Scouts visited the Veolia Environmental Services. There are two parts to the site, the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) and the Material Recovery Facility (MRF). In the MRF we were shown how the items we recycle are sorted using a series of machines. In the ERF we were shown how materials that cannot be recycled are burned to generate electricity. Some of the Scouts were really fortunate to sit in the controller’s chair and receive instruction, picking up tonnes of rubbish and depositing it again.

County Scouts Summer Camp 17-24 August 2013 at Lyons Copse

County Camp is for Scouts, Patrols and Troops who would not otherwise benefit from a weeks Summer Camp. A weeks traditional Summer Camp for Scouts, Patrols and Troops who would not otherwise benefit from a weeks Summer Camp. This opportunity is ideal If you cannot arrange a camp, where you haven’t enough leaders,where you would like to learn more about running a camp or where you don’t have a Camping Permit. Scouts are welcome with or without Leaders, but Leaders and Young Leaders are very welcome and will be fully involved running the week of activities. Scouts will be camping in Patrols and will be cooking their own meals under supervision with food provided. When you’ve had someone helping you for a long time you may forget to say thank you. When The One Show came to Wickham that was our goal - to say thank you to two people who have been helping the community and us Scouts within it for over 25 years. Chris (Beaver Scout Leader) and Barry (Scout Leader & Group Scout Leader) Samways were the people being thanked and I think we did it in a great way! The aim of the day was for all of 1st Wickham Scout Group (Beavers, Cub, Scouts) and Wilderness Explorers along with Ainsley Harriott to go out and get “Grub for Graft”- meaning go out and help the local shop keepers, bakers and butchers and in return they gave us food for our party to thank Chris and Barry. The day was great I was the eldest Explorer in the Group that went to the bakery; my twin brother went to the butchers along with my elder sister (who is a Cub Leader). We all had fun achieving our tasks from cleaning an oven, weeding and even cleaning a plough, as the company was brilliant. I had many friends in the Explorers taking part, but also the Leaders were brilliant, they treat us like adults, giving us responsibility for as much as they can including cooking, looking after the altar fires and camp fire. The film crew spent the day smiling and laughing, although they had a tight schedule they were really easy to get along with. Ainsley Harriott never stopped smiling and helping - on and off camera. When Chris and Barry turned up they had no idea what was waiting for them, all the smiling faces of people who really do appreciate everything they do and to be honest what better way to thank Scout Leaders than a BBQ (cooked on altar fires) round a campfire. Overall a fantastic day! With Scout Community week coming up in June this year it’s important to go out and give back to the community you belong to, so go on, Do 1 Thing, 3 - 9 June 2013

Cubs, Scouts and Explorers from 1st Petersfield raised an amazing ÂŁ1,616 during a recent bag pack at Waitrose supermarket, for the Royal Marines Association Fisher House Project. Following presentations to the Cubs and Scouts during their meetings about the proposed multi-games sports arena to be built adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the newly opened Fisher House, the young people could see how the new facility would enable children to directly help in the rehabilitation of their severely wounded parents. Playing sport will help the children of service personnel to come to terms with the injuries their parents have sustained whilst carrying out their duties and they can be involved in the recovery of their loved ones. This inspired the Scout Group to raise funds for the project and so a bag pack was organised. The phenomenal total raised by their hard work is a huge boost to the appeal and their efforts are greatly appreciated. Members of the County Youth Council visit the set of Downton Abbey.

W

hen Alastair Bruce became a Hampshire Scouting Ambassador, we asked him if some members of the Youth Council could interview him about his life. Alastair readily agreed, and as he is Historic Consultant on the Downton Abbey Television series, currently being filmed at Highclere Castle near Newbury, he offered to carry out the interview on the set. The date arranged was Thursday 18th April, and four youth Council members, Charlotte, Tilly, Peter and Andrew arrived at 11.30am. Alastair arrived a few minutes later and introduced Rob James-Collier, who plays Thomas the “misunderstood” (his words…not mine!) Under Butler in the series, who had some photos taken with the young people. After coffee we all sat on the crew bus where the interview was carried out with Alastair, which lasted about an hour, until the cast and crew arrived for lunch. During lunch Alastair took us around the castle, explained the set, the scene they were recording and all aspects of the filming techniques etc. Did you know for a series like Downton Abbey, they aim to record 3 pages of script a day, and a page is one minute of transmission time! After the tour we all had a hearty film crew lunch and met other members of the cast and crew, before setting off.

Scouts from our troop, 6th Fleet Scouts, went on a county Hill walking expedition with over 20 other Scouts and Explorers from all over Hampshire. The Scouts were going not only for the amazing views but to complete their Hill walkers and Expedition Challenge badges. The walks were all very long and tiring but very rewarding, when we reached the summit of the mountains we were climbing. We also had a long expedition at the end of the week, which included hiking with our heavy rucksacks, cooking our food, camping and hiking back! We stayed in a lovely hut in a small village called Braithwaite. As well as clothes and a wash kit, we needed extra items for our day sack. When in a mountain emergency, you need a first aid kit; a survival bag, a shelter, a whistle, a phone and extra food to keep you going. When on the expedition, a tent and a stove were vital or else you would go hungry and have no energy for the next days hike.

on we climbed another really high mountain, still miles a head of the groups trailing us. We discovered that every person in our group could climb the mountain no matter how hard or tiring they thought it was! The 3rd day of our quest was in freezing, cold conditions, climbing Grisedale Pike. At 791m high in icy snow, we climbed up along a narrow path, jumping from rock to rock, trying not to slip on the bypassing ice. After a long trudge up, the cloud quickly closed on us and the wind picked up, leaving us with no view. Fortunately, a little lower down the cloud had dispersed and we took many photographs. After climbing a neighbouring mountain, we headed down to a safe slope nearby where we could practice using ice axes. When finishing, we began the long walk back to our hut in Braithwaite to relax our weary, aching legs.

On the first day we did a lower down but further in distance hike, which led us to a Stone Age circle made out of huge rocks. Travelling in groups of six, we map read, used our compass and used tick-off features to find our current location and which bearing and direction to go next. We had some great views of the mountains we would be facing, over the next week.

The 4th day was our last long hike before our expedition. We climbed a 700m+ mountain before making our way onto a really dangerous ridge, which was utterly narrow, very icy, and with high, steep drops either side. It was like a thrill theme park ride. The feeling when you have finished it and accomplished your fears is truly amazing. Another quick visit to the safe slope and we carried on to some really deep patches of snow, all the way up to our knees!

The next day was our first major climb when we climbed over 500m in a couple of hours. We climbed over a very slippery, frozen-over stream near reaching the summit. Finally our group made it, beating all the other teams by a long way. The views were spectacular as we were looking over Bassenthwaite Lake, a massive dark blue lake right next to the mountain. Later

The next two days were our expedition; where we hiked, camped out and then hiked again, with our backpacks. The hike itself wasn’t so bad though as we were mostly on flat ground. We passed heaps of sheep and little lambs. When we arrived at our campsite, we set up camp and made our dinner. Next year, I would like to be an Instructor so I can help others achieve the same.



2013 In April we had our annual County Network Cooking Competition hosted by New Forest North’s Pegasus Network. 7.30pm - That feeling you have, the excitement of the competition, everyone was in place, ready to go! The judges were watching, making notes, Mater Chefs Greg Wallace would have been scared! 7.40pm - And it starts, Pegasus seemed confident, they had all their jobs agreed. The judges were asking questions about the ingredients, the hand picked eggs to go in the batter for the pancakes, the hot birds eye chillies for the curry and galangal? Steamers were putting on a good show, dressed in their climbing gear, and their mascot with his sunnies and walking sticks! Their work was organised; they knew what they wanted; and they were going all out to get it! Lions were all dolled up in their chefs whites with their PJ bottoms and pirate head scarves! Three of the team were working hard with the supervisor cracking the whip, and that was just on the cream! Pegasus Stuffed “Grylls” Peppers - red peppers stuffed with pork & mature cheddar cheese Thai Green Curry - Boiled rice, tender fillet chicken breast, garlic, onions, hot birds eye chillies, lemon grass, galangal Pancakes - Homemade batter pancakes, with hand picked eggs topped with fresh wild berries Lions Pan fried breast of wild pigeon, pigeon leg lollipop, charred hem lettuce & tomato chutney Pan fried fillet of plaice, truffle potatoes, roast cherry tomatoes, pea puree & roast garlic Wild strawberry cheescake Steamers Summer Camp made Salmon fish cakes Palate cleanser - Kendal Mint Cake D of E style Beef & mixed veg stew Raid on the tuck shop liver pudding 9.00pm - And the first team were ready, Steamers were steaming ahead! The table was laid with a map to show all the adventurous place we could go! The fish cakes were lovely, followed by our palate cleanser of mint cake! The main was served in a bag and the beef and potatoes were cooked well, I have to say not sure about the dumplings (childhood memories!!) And the dessert..... All of this was accompanied by music of the outdoors, wild life, the sound of the crackling fire....


9.15pm - Next ready to serve were Lions, and they were showing their adventurous side by giving us a fine dinning experience just using a two ring burner!! Could it be done? The table was laid like something from a high class restaurant. The pigeon arrived on a board and looked very interesting, this was followed by the fish on crushed potatoes which was very tasty. The dessert was lovely and all the judges agreed, Chris tells me he dreamt about cheesecake last night!! 9.30pm - And Pegasus were flying in at the end, the table was set, we had our camp blankets to keep us warm and the tent handy in case it rained! The peppers were lovely, and the curry was not too hot, it was just right. This was all topped off with pancakes made with hand picked eggs! 9.45pm - Judging was VERY difficult, but between Kerie Wallace, Chris Scott, Barry Stride and myself after much talking we had made a decision. 10.00pm - It was a close result with the three teams cooking some delicious food!! First place went to Lions Network, Fareham East with 36 points!! 2nd Place went to Steamers Network from Eastleigh with 34 points and Pegasus Network came 3rd with 30 points.

Company Volunteer Schemes Fundraising Opportunties Does your employer give voluntary service days for you to take in work time? Do you need a project completed but don’t have the man power to hand? Will your employer match fund any fund raising you do? It’s worth asking, read on for more information about some schemes that are already operating. Companies who want to work on a project. Last May Waitrose launched their Partner Volunteer scheme to donate 75,000 hours of time to good causes nationwide. The scheme requires all 277 of its branches to donate 250 hours (100 hours for convenience stores) of employees time to local charities. It has been designed to enable Waitrose Partners (employees) to take time out of their day to day roles to give back to their community with a project they may otherwise be unable to complete. Do you have a project their employees can help with? Companies who give volunteer leave. BT’s volunteering programme encourages people to use their energy and skills to make a difference to charities and in their local community. Each employee can volunteer 3 days of work time for a cause they are passionate about. Since the scheme was launched in 2009, employees have contributed more than 28,000 days (with an estimated value of £9.4 million) to a range of charities, local communities and social enterprises. They also run an in-house scheme called Community Champions Award which provides grants of up to £500 to voluntary organisations BT employees are involved with. Do any of the adults in your Group work for BT? Companies who match employees fundraising efforts. Co-op’s volunteer programme enables employees from all their businesses, from all parts of the country to contribute to their local community. They have increased paid time off for employee volunteers to two days pro rata per year and have adopted a target to double their volunteering by 2014. The Co-op Booster Fund is for staff who fundraise on their own and raise £100. They can apply for this amount to be match funded up to £100. If colleagues fundraise in a team and raise £400, this amount will also be match funded by the company. Pop into you local Co-op and find out what they are doing to achieve their targets!! UK National Volunteer Day. If you work for a company that does not already have a scheme in place then why not suggest they get involved in the Business in the Community Give and Gain day on May 17th 2013. Thousands of employees across the UK, and globally, will be donating their time to the communities they live or work in by taking part in this day of action. www.bitc.org.uk/programmes/give-gain-day How to get involved: It’s really easy to join in with Give & Gain Day 2013. There are three ways to get involved:

1, Sign up to take part in an activity organised for you by Business in the Community. 2, Organise your own volunteering activity with a community group of your choice. 3, Contact one of our CSR360 Global Partner Networks and take part internationally. Many companies have a corporate and social responsibility policy - make sure you enquiry with your employer what theirs is. If they don’t have a policy then I can provide you with information about why it will enhance their company profile, improve staff performance, develop employee skills and provide organisational cohesion to name just a few benefits! Antarctica - HSX

I

n 2007 Hampshire Scout Expeditions (HSX) put three people on the top of Everest to celebrate the centenary of scouting; since then HSX have been waiting for another epic challenge. After several years, around September 2011 a plan started to form of that much needed expedition. It was of course to visit the only continent unexplored by HSX - Antarctica. A team of HSX members were truly inspired by accomplishments of the Sky High Team in 2007, and this select few had decided to explore a whole new meaning of the word challenge. Of course at this point it was just a dream and we would soon learn how hard we would have to fight to make it turn into reality. In February 2012 the team undertook their first week of training in the Cairngorm Mountains on the HSX yearly trip to the region. It was designed to bring a starting team together and to begin the journey of getting to Antarctica. They battled exhaustion, hunger, injury and the weather to complete over 100km in six gruelling days. Following this first training week the team indentified many areas to improve and suggested ways of moving the expedition forward. The next year was very quiet for the expedition; many of the members were undertaking new jobs and working on outdoor qualifications which took up alot of spare time. However in early January 2013 the expedition began to become a hot topic among the team and plans began to circulate once more. It was decided by the expedition leader that to show commitment each member must provide a yearly fee. This fee was agreed on being an excellent idea as it was enough money to think seriously about your decision to join the expedition. A planning weekend was also organised on the 9 & 10th of March at Ferny Crofts to get some firm plans written down and really move the expedition forward. During the weekend many topics were discussed; Training, Sponsorship, Cost, and each member of the team was given a job (Accounts/Admin, Food, Training, Fundraising, Media and Communications,


Kit & Logistics). We also decided upon a rough schedule of trips leading up to the expedition, including the Alps, Norway, and Greenland and we collected our expedition t-shirts (a blue polo with a custom logo). Following this weekend we all feel confident in the expedition and more together as a team and can really feel the expedition moving forward. We have started developing a business plan for our expedition to take to potential sponsors, have contacted branding companies about generating a website and are working on deals to gain media coverage in local newspapers and news programmes. Our calendar for this year, is relatively busy with a training weekend in North Wales in June and a two week trip to the Alps in July with another planning meeting at Ferny Crofts around September. Our aim by September is to have developed our website, gained more media coverage to raise the level of interest, to begin fundraising and attending meetings with corporate companies. The Bursary is designed to provide an opportunity to learn more about running an activity centre, gain nationally recognised outdoor qualifications and to get out on the crags, mountains and rivers of the UK. Current Bursary Student Naomi reckons that the bursary is “awesome”. She admitted “The scheme has made me grow up a lot and made me realise what I want to do with my life.” During the Bursary, you’ll spend time working at Ferny Crofts, as well as being given Personal Development time. During your Personal Development you will have the opportunity to go on expeditions to Dartmoor, The Lake District and ice climbing in the Cairngorms in Scotland. You will also have the opportunity to plan your own trips which could include cycling, kayaking, horse riding, surfing, climbing…..it is your Personal Development, so your choice! Accommodation and food are all included in the Bursary package, as well as most training and trip fees. A monthly grant is also paid to each student. The scheme begins in September and runs until May (9 Months), and puts you in a good position to be considered for a summer instructors’ contract at Ferny Crofts.
