About Us

Hampshire Scouts provides adventurous activities and personal development opportunities for over 16,000 young people aged 6-25, promoting the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the individual, helping them achieve their full potential. In Scouting, we believe that young people develop most when they are ‘learning by doing,’ when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.

Young People First

As a young Scout Leader many years ago, I wrote an article for Scouting magazine entitled “What’s gone wrong with Scouts?”. To my surprise, it was published – and to my even greater surprise, it didn’t land me in front of the County Commissioner ! The theme of it was very simple – the national leakage of older Scouts from Troops was for two basic reasons – lack of adventure and poor adult leadership. When the Scout Troop offered a range of enjoyable, adventurous activities - and had great adult leaders who related well with the young people, then the older Scouts stayed. Last June, the Scout Association commissioned a study on “Overcoming the barriers to the growth of Cub Scouting”, which looked at the difficulties in retaining older Cub Scouts. And there’s some really interesting insights, especially if you track down the full report. The report says it much better than I did, and identified the major factors that influence whether Cubs stay beyond 9½ • • • •

The Cub Leader. Programme delivery and responding to the needs of children. Programme content. Friends.

It also suggested a list of the most important attributes of a Cub Leader • • • • • • • • •

They need to be kind and understanding. Reasonable attitude to discipline – they should not blow their top when a child does something wrong. They need to be good at communicating both with Cubs and with their parents. They need to be enthusiastic about Scouting and offer a varied programme. Organised, in particular about badges, record-keeping and transitions. Full of energy. Sensitive to the needs of different members (older/younger, shy/confident). They need to have the skills and/or training to be able to manage a large group of energetic youngsters. They need to be fun!

and contrasted that with the “grumpy” or “shouty” leaders who were too often the reason for older Cubs leaving. I know many of you already deliver outstanding programmes and great leadership, but if you’re losing your older Cubs, or Scouts, or Explorers, then maybe – just maybe – it’s worth taking a fresh look at how to do things. The report is gold dust – you can see the short version online and request the full version at https:// members.scouts.org.uk/newsandviews/module/31/675/research-into-cub-scouting If we’re going to really grow Scouting in Hampshire to 25,000 youth members by 2018, then we need to get better at retaining our youth members. And we’ll do that by offering them adventure, listening to their wants and needs, and treating them with respect. In short, by putting young people first.

Scouts’ Winter Camp Adventure

Last weekend, Scouts from Hampshire met up with 3,000 others from across the UK to welcome in a new year of adventure, whilst camping at Gilwell Park in North East London, the home of Scouting and outdoor adventure. The annual Winter Camp in January provides the opportunity for Scouts to take part in over seventy different adventurous and fun activities ranging from abseiling to zorbing. The boys and girls, aged between 10-18, along with nearly 1,000 adult Leaders, enjoyed the experience of sleeping in tents for two nights, cooking on open fires and enjoying a packed programme led by a team of 200 adult volunteers. Tom aged 15 from 6th Gosport Scouts, said “Winter Camp was amazing. I did so much during the weekend”. Jade aged 11 from 1st Chineham, Basingstoke said “Winter Camp was amazing. I loved getting muddy, love all activities and having fun. I am going horse riding later”. Chief Scout Bear Grylls, all year round international adventurer said “Winter Camp provides a whole new adventure experience for young people. The challenge is all about empowering these Scouts with the skills to survive the sub zero temperatures and how to keep warm and comfortable in their tents. It’s great to see so many young people enjoying such a wide range of adventures, from climbing, abseiling, quad biking and high ropes, all in January, the coldest month of the year. Go Scouts!” Whilst this event was taking place at Gilwell Park, Hawkhirst Scout Activity Centre in Northumberland was hosting a similar event for the first time for 500 Scouts and nearly 200 adult Leaders. Hawkhirst is one of nine Scout Activity Centres, across the UK and is known for its location set in the heart of Kielder Forest on the edge of Kielder Water. For further information contact Ray Noice E; ray.noice@scouts-hants.org.uk M: 079 6858 6344 About Scouting • Adventure is at the core of Scouting. The Scout Association passionately believes in helping its members fulfil their full physical, intellectual social and spiritual potentials by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves. • Over 200 activities are offered by Scouting across the UK, made possible by the efforts of 100,000 voluntary adult leaders. This has helped make Scouting the largest co-educational youth Movement in the country, with half a million members. •

One of the challenges that the Scout Movement faces is finding more volunteers to plug the current gap. At present there are 30,000 young people on waiting lists.

• Adults working in Scouting contribute in excess of 364 million hours of voluntary work each year to their local communities. • Worldwide Scouting has 31 million members both male and female and operates in nearly every country in the world. •

Gilwell Winter Camp activities include climbing, abseiling, zorbing, revolving wall, robot games, dodgems, laser clay, archery, crafts, outdoor Quasar, sphereing, digger challenge, Agrocat, trampoline, coconut tree climbing, 4x4 off roading, horse riding, brush boarding, disco party, cinema, radio orienteering, wide games, quad bikes, pedal carts, zip wire, high ropes course, prussiking (indoor rock climbing aided by ropes) etc.

g n i d l i u B o o Igl

Hamble Sea Scouts had an Igloo building evening on the programme in January and amazingly had the snow to do it. A total of 60 Scouts and Explorers turned up to build the igloos and 22 were brave enough to want to sleep the night in their igloos. The night was a relatively mild zero degrees (Last time we did this, 2 years ago it was -8) and all but 2 stayed warm and comfortable in their igloos for the whole night.

Bushcraft Skills Weekend

15 - 17 March th

th

Lyons Copse, Sandy Lane, Shedfield, SO32 2HQ A weekend course for Hampshire leaders and Helpers interested in developing and transferring Bushcraft skills within their own Section. If you are a Cub, Scout or Explorer Leader we will show you how to introduce traditional and modern bushcraft skills to your youth members. Whether you are starting from scratch or have some experience of working with a knife, axe and saw we will demonstrate current best practice in their use. We cover the preparation of natural fire wood and teach some ‘foolproof’ ways to light a fire with natural materials. An introduction to shelter building, tool maintenance and survival skills is included and we incorporate a woodland walk to identify tree types and food available from the hedgerow in the Spring. This is a hands-on weekend with each practical session preceded by a presentation on the fundamental aspects of the skill with practical safety considerations. The weekend is fully catered with a limited amount of indoor accommodation. Equipment and instruction are included in the cost of £45. Forms available from: esl@explorerscouts.org.uk The residential weekend is run by the HEAT Bushcraft team. HEAT is a Scout Active Support unit made up from Leaders, Skills Instructors and Occasional Helpers from across Hampshire. We believe in the importance of traditional scouting skills being delivered into the modern scout movement. Our aim is to provide first class training and activities to Explorers, Scouts, Cubs and their leaders and to offer activities for District and County camps.

My name is Stephanie and I’m a Girl Guide leader. I would like to introduce you to the charity that I work for. The charity is Orangutan Appeal UK, based in Brockenhurst. The charity works to raise funds and awareness so that it can help the Orangutans in Indonesia and Borneo particularly the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah, Malaysia. Orangutans are at great risk and their numbers are in serious decline, is due to a loss of habitat and having a lack of natural food source. The charity helps by working with rescue teams and also a rehabilitation centre to try and get the captive, orphaned sick Orangutans back into the wild where they belong. An important aspect to our work is to spread the work and educate people about the fight to save this species. I am able to offer a free half hour presentation for Scouts and Explorers, followed by time for questions. I will also bring some badges, stickers and soft orangutan toys for them or the unit to buy if they like. I am hoping that I can encourage the units to get involved with doing some fun fundraising for orangutans, and I will deliver some ideas on how the unit can do this. I hope that this presentation will be a fun and entertaining hour for the Scouts and Explorers to relax and learn about the plight of the orangutans, and discover ways to help. The aim of the presentation is to talk to young people about the plight of the orangutan; it is not about selling anything but about offering information in an enjoyable and relaxed way. My manager is also happy to attend if this is something you are very interested in, she has visited the Sepilok centre several times and she can share her experience and tell stories about just what it is like working with these amazing creatures. Kindest Regards Stephanie Bray Adoptions Administrator Orangutan Appeal UK Tel: 01590 623443 www.orangutan-appeal.org.uk
