9pm Explorer Film Judging of Monster Face Painting, Monster Costumes and ‘Do The Monster Mash’

Scouts from across Hampshire and the World leapt into activities on day one of H0018. Participants have been spotted flying high over Scout Adventures Buddens campsite as Hampshire’s monster celebration got going with people zorbing in the Mummy Zone, playing giant football darts in Dracula’s Castle, and trying out Ferrari’s in the Zombie Zone.

“The morning activities were amazing,” said Cub Daniel, as he rushed to his camp to get lunch before the afternoon activities started, “I can’t wait for the rest of the week with activities like this.” Katie, a Scout from Silchester, kept her feet firmly on the ground throughout the day. “There’s so much to do here. In between all the activities that are happening, there’s so many people to talk to and loads of new friends to make.”

Hedgehog Heroes There were dramatic scenes at H0018 yesterday morning when two quick thinking Fareham West Explorers saved the life of a vulnerable wild animal. While heading to morning activities, keen eyed Lucas spotted a baby hedgehog curled up by a bush which appeared close to death. His friend Alex selflessly donated his jumper and with great care they used it to transfer the poorly creature to the warmth and safety of a cardboard box. Quickly seeking help from the media team, they called a local animal welfare charity who advised the heroes to take the hoglet, named Dave, to the vet in Wareham. Their leader Jim offered his car as a temporary hedgehog ambulance and together they safely delivered the patient to the care of a vet. During triage it was discovered that Dave was cold and dehydrated with a rattling chest. The rescued mammal will now be passed into the care of a hedgehog sanctuary until being released in the spring. “We are pleased that we were able to step in do our best for Dave” commented a modest Lucas. The Monster News team say ‘well done’ to the pair for their quick thinking and compassionate care. Real heroes! If you would like to nominate a hero of the day, pop into the media hub and let us know.

Head Shave For Children’s Cancer Charity A big hearted Scout had his head shaved for charity last week. Tom, from 1st Titchfield, was fundraising as part of a charity week at his school. He collected donations from his friends and family and was delighted to be able to send an impressive £155 to CCLG, a charity who support children with cancer and leukaemia. “I wanted to support CCLG as they are doing really valuable work” commented Tom.
