LOCAL CANCER SURVIVOR ENCOURAGES OTHERS TO “PUSH UP” THEIR COLONOSCOPY APPOINTMENTS !! Second Annual 5K to Raise Awareness of Early Detection Slated for March 5th

Keith Rollins, a local area colon cancer survivor, is on a mission: to encourage more people to “push up” their colonoscopy dates to save more lives. On Saturday, March 5, during Colon Cancer Awareness Month, his nonprofit organization appropriately named the Push Up Foundation will host its second annual Victory Lap, a family-friendly 5K event to help raise awareness of the disease. Cancer-free for more than a year now, Rollins has become a fierce advocate, helping to educate on the importance of early screening for colon cancer. “For a long time, 50 was the standard age to have a colonoscopy. The recommended age is now 45. And if you have high-risk factors such as a history of colon cancer in your family, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, or change in bowel habits, you need to have the first one even sooner,” said Madriz, assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. Together with his wife Sarah and their two children Reece and Kendall have a burning desire to create awareness of colon cancer, a treatable disease when caught early. As the third most diagnosed cancer in both men and women, signs and symptoms of colon cancer may not be apparent until the disease has progressed, which is why the medical community emphasizes the importance of scheduling a screening colonoscopy at 45 or sooner if any worrisome signs or symptoms are present. The event will include breakfast tacos sponsored by El Rey. There also will be an after-party at The Coffee House. The cost to participate is $20. Funds raised will help with the development of patient education material on the importance of early screenings. Registration for the 5K event and more information is available via the organization’s website: www.pushupfoundationhouston.org

Leads the nation

in Ocean Education

"

Y

orkshire Academy is leading the nation in Ocean Education” stated NOAA’s Advisory Council Coordinator, (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Leslie Clift, in a recent virtual presentation given to NOAA by Yorkshire Academy’s 4th graders explaining their recent CO2 reducing prototypes. Why would elementary students be presenting to NOAA and why would such young students be focusing on reducing carbon emissions? Yorkshire Academy has been the first and only Ocean Guardian School in Houston for the last 4 years. Since 1984, Yorkshire Academy has been focusing on how best to serve students from Early Childhood to 5th grade in an engaging and creative way. Thanks to Jacqui Stanley, Yorkshire Academy 5th grade teacher, seeking the Ocean Guardian distinction was another meaningful way to make Yorkshire unique. Yorkshire Academy’s smaller nurturing campus was a perfect environment to adopt this new focus.

10 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE March 2021

What is an Ocean Guardian School An Ocean Guardian School must meet various criteria each year to maintain this designation. Yorkshire Academy achieved this by making a commitment to work toward the protection and conservation of local watersheds, the world’s ocean, and special ocean areas, like national marine sanctuaries. Ocean Guardian schools must propose and implement a school- or community-based conservation project each year. With this award, comes a yearly grant to help purchase materials, cover field trip transportation costs, and any additional needs that may enhance the experience. The initial goal of the first year’s Ocean Guardian project asked students to research and engineer methods to prevent observable marine debris from entering the water shed. In the second year, students compiled and collected water samples sourced from their local watershed and counted microplastic debris. They designed prototypes of density separators to measure and extract microplastics in beach sand. This year, students focus on the importance of plants, specifically algae, in the manufacture and importance of biofuels. Students will create prototypes of devices to measure air quality, specifically carbon dioxide.

What are SEED Students Yorkshire Academy’s, Ocean Guardian students in grades 1st - 5th are known as SEEDS–Students Engaging the Environment through Discovery and Science. Mrs. Stanley has held the Education seat on the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council for over a decade, and she is devoted to sharing her knowledge about this special place, as well as her love for everything to do with taking care of oceans and marine life. Not many people know that the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary exists just 100 miles from the Texas coast, and is such a healthy ecosystem, it is considered a sentinel site. What better way to spread the word about our own underwater national park and all our marine sanctuaries than by children telling children! Yorkshire Academy continues the culture of supporting all aspects of education, and it is a perfect environment to “plant” SEEDS. An important goal of the SEEDS students is to share their knowledge with others, so they have presented at various venues such as Rice University’s Bioscience Lab, a Lone Star College Biology class, and Nottingham Country Elementary gifted and talented class as well as virtually to NOAA, to the employees of Tidewater, a company that operates a large fleet of

Offshore Support Vessels worldwide a detailed explanation and analysis of microplastics. The zoom audience ranged from one Tidewater family in Norway to workers from Africa and England. The SEEDS certainly achieved educational outreach and enjoyed great international exposure! In each case, the audiences were impressed with the students’ confident, relevant, interesting and accomplished presentations, and all this from elementary students!

Academic & Enrichment Excellence Yorkshire Academy is very proud of its Ocean Guardian designation, as well as its very strong academic program, but there are also many other special aspects of this school such as its music program which produces Broadway musicals each year like Aladdin, Fiddler on the Roof, or The Sound of Music that dazzle its audiences to their core. The art program allows for students to take such risks and create pieces of art that one would think could not be done by students so young. For example, each year Yorkshire students earn impressive medals at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Art Competition, often earning gold and Best – in -Show ribbons. The overall enrichment program exceeds what is expected at an elementary level in a variety of classes, i.e. computer, library, Spanish, daily Physical fitness, but recently Yorkshire Academy has put an enhanced emphasis on Social Emotional classes. The world has become more challenging to manage for adults, so it’s vital that schools provide tools and specific lessons to help children navigate emotionally as they mature. Additionally, 1st – 5th grade students can compete in PSIA (Private School Interscholastic Association), a statewide academic competition which hosts both district and state meets in subjects such as Math, Art Memory, Creative Writing, Prose Interpretation and many more. Yorkshire students diligently prepare for both the district and state meets and compete impressively each year. While the schoolwide academics are always challenging such as in preparing for literature circle discussions, role playing Texas history, or tackling advanced math problems to name a few, all are taught in an environment where students feel comfortable taking a risk. There is a feeling of joyful learning found in every corner of Yorkshire’s campus daily.

11 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE March 2021

Early Childhood Yorkshire’s Early Childhood program educates its ‘little ones’ with the same focus, respect, and intent as the elementary students. Watching an adorable 18-month-old students as they build their vocabulary and tackle their 1st puzzles as they weave through Yorkshire’s preschool, Pre-K, and each elementary grade, and then eventually marvel at these students as they confidently give their 5th grade graduation speech is truly a joy and privilege to behold.

Moving on to Middle School As Yorkshire Academy’s students move on to area middle schools and all around the world, they become leaders. Yorkshire Academy students are sought out at local middle schools not just for their academic accomplishments, but for their confidence and kindness. The staff and faculty are gratified to see so many alumni students come back to Yorkshire every year to see their favorite teachers and to remember this community that meant so much to them and helped mold them into the caring teenagers and impressive young adults they have become.

Generations of Students One of the greatest joys for Shirley Swinbank, Yorkshire’s Founder and Executive Director is to have Yorkshire alumni enroll their own children into Yorkshire Academy. “What better compliment can we receive than having former students trust us to educate their own children?” Mrs. Swinbank shared.

39 Years and Going Strong There have been many changes in Yorkshire Academy’s 39th year history such as growing the campus, keeping pace technologically, adding an afterschool enrichment program, developing a comprehensive summer program, but the core tenet of Yorkshire Academy remains, nurturing and challenging young children in an environment where they are known and valued. Yorkshire Academy’s tag line, “A Little School Making a Big Impact” holds true. If you would like to learn more information about Yorkshire Academy or to come by for a personal tour, please contact admissions@yorkshireacademy.com, call 281.531.6088 or visit yorkshireacademy.com. You will see what generations have come to see. YorkshireAcademy is an amazing environment for your child to become all that they can be. Kid-friendly Eateries parents will love, too

By Chantal Lemieux

There is a standard of social etiquette that is implied, whereby it is seemingly agreed upon that some environments (mostly restaurants) are simply not appropriate for younger children. There's no reason you shouldn't enjoy a nice meal out simply because you have children in tow. Friendly waitstaff, menus for fickle palates and sophisticated atmospheres are just some of the perks you should enjoy when you choose to dine out.

My kids have never been the type to sit quietly and eat. They are a bit messy, loud, and couldn’t stay seated in their chair if their little energetic lives depended on it! Fortunately, I’ve been able to find quite a few in Houston that have amazing cuisine and atmosphere. Enjoy!

By Jill Morgnstern

My son’s first sleepover was at the home of a nurse. “He’ll be safer with her than he would be with me!” I reasoned. His sister was upset that he got to go. At two and a half years older she had never slept over. The problem was that her invites had generally been by parents I didn’t know. Not only was my son going to be in the care of a nurse, the nurse was someone I knew well. The difference between the sleepover that he got to attend and the ones that she had been deprived of was a safety issue. I felt good about sending him and it wasn’t a matter of his age. Sleepovers can cause anxiety in even the most seasoned parents. How old should children be? How do I know they’re safe? Will they have a good time, or be cranky? And although some parents ban them completely, others consider them an indispensable right of passage.

Sleepovers have many benefits Kids get a longer unstructured time to socialize. Especially with our busy schedules, unstructured play time is to be treasured. This larger block of time than they usually get with each other can provide needed time to socialize more deeply and engage in more intricate play. Children get to see how other families function. Getting to see how other families eat dinner or their bedtime routines expands children’s horizons. Whether it is different foods to try at dinner or different expectations about bedtime, children get a peek into a whole new world. Sleepovers promote independence. As children grow older these experiences of being away from their parents will benefit them as they ultimately tackle the wider world by themselves. When your child wants to go on a school trip or to camp, he or she will already have the experience of having been away from home. Sleepovers increase responsibility as children learn how to navigate a new situation by themselves. Normal routines are suspended as they take charge of packing and getting ready for bed themselves.

16 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE March 2021

How do you know if your child is ready for a sleepover? According to clinical psychologist Samantha Rodman, there are a number of signs to keep in mind. Readiness for a sleepover is highly dependent on the individual child. According to Rodman, “If a child does well when traveling and sleeping in other beds, that is a good sign. If they are independent and view the sleepover as an adventure, allow them to try it out. Kids with social anxiety may be more hesitant and try later than other kids. Overall, by 4th grade most kids will be ready to sleep at a good friend's house.”

Before the Sleepover In his book “Protecting the Gift,” Gavin DeBecker recommends treating the family of a potential sleepover with as much scrutiny as you would a babysitter. One easy way to accomplish this is to insist that before you send your child on a sleepover, that child spend the night at your home. This gives you a chance to get to know the family and find out more about them. Even if it’s a family you know well you will want to verify details, such as who will be home on the night of the sleepover, whether there are guns in the house and what types of media are allowed.

During the Sleepover Most children will be happy with the additional time to play together. But if you want something more structured when you host, try a themed sleepover. Maybe it’s a movie night or baking night. Or perhaps an indoor camping party is more your child’s style.

After the Sleepover Discuss how the sleepover went afterward. What were the ups and downs? This information can help you plan the next sleepover or let you know if there’s anything you need to discuss with the other parents. Plan for an easy following day. Most kids don’t sleep much on the night of a sleepover. They stay up well past bedtime and are often up at the crack of dawn due to the excitement. It’s better to plan a sleepover when your child can rest and recover the next day than to have to attend an important event with a crabby child. With a little preparation it’s possible to not only survive your children’s sleepovers but help your children make great memories! By keeping these ideas in mind next time your child asks for a sleepover you can do your best to ensure that your child has a good experience.

Discuss your expectations in advance. Of course you want your child to use their best manners, to go to bed when expected and to eat politely at the table. But it is equally important that your kids know that they can call you at any time if they are uncomfortable.

Make the Most of Your Getaway

Family Camping Trips Written by Kimberly Blaker

Camping is the ultimate in outdoor family fun and is loaded with benefits for parents and kids alike. It provides adventure and unlimited opportunities to experience the great outdoors. It’s also an excellent way for kids to learn about nature, from plants and animals to the weather and skies. Historical landmarks and different regions offer lessons in history. And parents get a break from the daily responsibilities of life and a little relaxation. Not to mention, it’s an affordable way for families to vacation.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CAMP? Your family can choose from a variety of camping options. If you love the experience of roughin’ it, pitch a tent, and haul the bare necessities. Tents come in many sizes and styles, some with dividers for separate sleeping quarters. When purchasing a tent, remember capacity doesn’t include luggage space. If you plan to keep belongings in your tent, opt for a larger size. Most importantly, don’t forget padding or a blow-up mattress to insulate against the cold, hard ground.

18 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE March 2021

If you like the idea of roughing it, yet want some of the comforts of home, a pop-up camper is the best of both worlds. The canvas sides and pullout sections of pop-ups are surrounded by screens and give the feeling of sleeping in the fresh outdoors. Popups come in several sizes and often include an icebox or mini-refrigerator, heater, air conditioning, portable toilet, shower, kitchen sink, stove, cabinets and storage space, dining table, and other necessities. Some families prefer going in style. Travel trailers and motor homes offer a luxurious nighttime retreat after a day of outdoor fun. The ease in

loading and unloading these shelters is excellent for moving from campsite to campsite, making cross-country camping less work. Motor homes and travel trailers often have a full-size kitchen, living room complete with sofa and chairs, and separate bedrooms for comfort and privacy. Don’t overlook the option of a cozy cabin in the woods. Cabin rentals are sometimes found at campgrounds or in national forests at cabin resorts. Cabins range from basic singleroom shelters containing only beds to completely furnished three or four-room units, including kitchenettes. When reserving a cabin, ask what is supplied before you go so you’ll arrive prepared while avoiding unnecessary packing. And don’t forget to ask about electricity, lights, and water. Experienced campers with older kids might try a hike-in shelter for a real wilderness experience. Check with state and national parks for shelters that are sometimes set up along extended trails. After a day of hiking, roll out your sleeping bags under one of these small shelters for a dry night’s sleep under the stars.

CAMPING COSTS The cost of travel can make family vacations a rare treat. But the affordability of camping may allow for frequent getaways. Overnight fees range from a free night’s stay at some state park rustic sites (no showers, toilets, electricity, or water) to $50 or more per night at many of the top KOA and Jellystone Camp Park-Resorts. These top-of-the-line campgrounds are loaded with amenities from built-in swimming pools to live entertainment. State park campgrounds vary from state to state. Still, these are often the best deal for families interested in experiencing all that nature has to offer. Fees for overnight accommodations in state parks typically range from $15 to $40. Many state parks have

modern facilities, including flush toilets, showers, grassy or gravel sites, playgrounds, park stores for firewood and ice, and more. Furthermore, state parks frequently offer extensive wooded hiking or biking trails, natural wonders, historical sites, and more that isn’t found at private camp resorts. Camping also helps keep other vacation expenses to a minimum. Many families prefer cooking over the campfire to eating out. Additionally, most outdoor camping activities are free or available for minimal cost.

FUN CAMPING ACTIVITIES Whatever your family’s interests, there is plenty to see and do. Trails offer ample activities such as collecting rocks, leaves, or insects, scouting for wildlife, learning about plants and trees, and practicing survival skills. You can also go on hiking excursions, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams offer fishing, swimming, row boating or canoeing, sunbathing, and more. Wildlife viewing is often a highlight. Look for animals early in the morning or at dusk

on dirt roads and trails, in open fields surrounded by woods, and near water. Be patient, walk slowly and quietly, and don’t forget binoculars. Other activities include nature programs, nature centers, and historical sites, flying kites, rollerblading or bicycling on paved trails, and more. When you’re ready to relax, light a campfire, and enjoy reading or storytelling, play cards or board games, watch the sunset, stargaze, and roast marshmallows.

WHAT TO TAKE Buy a couple of large plastic totes with lids to carry and store your camping supplies. The following are some of the basics you’ll want to take. • Reusable plastic cups (labeled to save on washing)

• Coffee pot • Tablecloth • Ice chest, food, and drinks • Drinking water and large water container • Dish soap and dishcloths • Insect repellent and sunscreen • Folding chairs • Backpack • Radio, flashlight, and batteries • Lantern and matches • Firewood (unless available near your campground) • Knife and hatchet • Rope and twine • First-aid kit • Sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows • Air mattress or padding

• Silverware

• Personal hygiene items and toilet paper

• Plates and bowls

• Towels and washcloths

• Paper towels, food storage bags, and tinfoil

• Bikes, rollerblades, balls, fishing, and other sports equipment

• A cooking source such as a one or two-burner stove • An aluminum pot and skillet • Cooking utensils and can opener

19 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE March 2021

• Camera and binoculars • Clothing for all types of weather, rain gear, and walking shoes or hiking boots

WHAT NOT TO TAKE Don’t get carried away with packing, or camping will become a chore. Make a list, then weed out items you don’t really need. Portable televisions detract from outdoor fun, so leave yours at home. Think it through before taking your pet. Some campgrounds don’t allow pets, and even if they do, pets cannot be left unattended. A pet can hinder many activities, including beaches, where dogs often aren’t allowed.

EASY CAMP FOODS There are many ways to cook. Buy a gas or liquid fuel camping stove. If electricity is available, a crockpot or electric griddle works well. You can also carry a charcoal or small gas grill or cook over an open fire. Keep meals simple to minimize packing, preparation, and clean up. Easy choices include hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, steak, sandwiches, eggs, bacon, sausage, crockpot meals, sweet corn, baked potatoes, canned foods such as baked beans, tuna, chicken, spaghetti, ravioli, and soup, fresh fruit, vegetables and dip, bagels, English muffins, cereal, fruit juice, and hot cocoa. On the other hand, if you enjoy cooking and tasty meals are one of the highlights for your family, then make the most of mealtime. With all the options

for cooking, you can easily enjoy a gourmet feast.

JUST THE RIGHT CAMPGROUND

CAMPING TIPS Camping is often a learn-as-you-go experience. But the following can alleviate hassles and keep your family safe. Protect your food from animals and animals from your food by blocking access. Animals can find their way into nearly anything. Raccoons are known to lift lids right off coolers to snatch hot dogs and other treats. A cooler that latches is usually a safe bet. Any food that isn’t tightly contained should be stored in your vehicle overnight. Poor weather can strike at any time, and insect infestations can also make for a miserable experience. Make additional shelter such as a screen tent or tarps and rope part of your camping gear. Arrive at your camp destination ahead of the crowd. Every campsite is unique, and early arrival can assure a site that satisfies your needs. When selecting a site, look for proximity to restrooms, the playground, electricity, and water. If you have young kids, make sure the site isn’t close to a river or lake. The amount of shade you’ll want may depend on the weather forecast. To avoid mud in the event of rain, choose a grassy or rock site. Also, stay away from a site that backs up to outhouses, which can smell in the heat and wind. Know what animals are found in the area and teach your kids animal safety. Wild animals usually want to avoid humans as much as we want to avoid them. Still, they can pose risks. In the West, mountain lions have been known to snag children and even small women. In bear country, those accustomed to people sometimes get too close and result in injury. Even small animals that feel threatened may attack.

More than Ever

Our Kids Need Camp By Mike McDonell, Kidventure

As we move cautiously into 2022, a sense of hope and optimism for a more ‘normal’ life seems to be growing. And as we begin to open up our schools, communities, and businesses prior to the pandemic, we must first pay careful attention to our children and how the pandemic has affected their social, physical, and emotional wellbeing. The natural, healthy growth of our kids involves being with others, exploring their world, creating friendships, taking risks, engaging the world around them, and being active. Unfortunately, the pandemic has stunted that growth for so many of our kids and embedded an unhealthy amount of anxiety and uncertainty in the process. For so many kids, the pandemic has served to further isolate them from friends and peers. For some, school has provided a limited reconnection, but school doesn’t provide for the substantive social connections and bonds like camp has done for millions of kids. Summer and seasonal camps have always been a powerful place to bring kids together and celebrate the best in life. Camp harnesses the very nature of childhood with its quest for exploration and its propensity for creativity. Camp provides a culture where positive relationships are what matters most, ones that are based on strong values and care for one another. In a world that is struggling for greater diversity, acceptance of all people, and inclusion, there is no more powerful platform than camp to teach that. At camp, kids develop greater confidence, strong relational bonds, and attain a sense of belonging that is so challenging to find right now.

Celebrate youth

Too many in our world are searching for that belonging, that acceptance, and that chance to flourish. Our kids need to be validated, not by the number of likes on their social, but with a smile and a hug from a real friend that genuinely cares. Right now our kids are drowning in loneliness and fear amidst a world of uncertainty, hatred, and separation, and right now we must look to come together. Our kids deserve that. The greater pandemic in our country cannot be cured with a vaccine. But it can be made so much better with camp. That is why this Spring and Summer are more important than ever. And this is why we have the opportunity to make it all happen for them. Many camp programs including Kidventure have already begun registering for both Spring Break Camp and Summer Camp. Kidventure’s Spring Break Camp will take place March 14-18 at two locations in the Houston area. Summer Camp will begin June 6th through August 12. Hello Beach Here We Come By Amy Garrett

S. PADRE ISLAND

Not just for college Spring Breakers

South Padre Island

sits just off the southernmost point of the Texas Coast between the shallow Laguna Madre and the Gulf of Mexico. The soft powdery beaches, warm turquoise waters, diverse eateries, and an exploding art scene have given South Padre Island traction to become the perfect year round vacation destination for families. Here are some of our favorite places to stay, visit, eat, and relax.

32 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE March 2021

Where to Stay With many lodging options on the island, our pick for families is the Courtyard by Marriott South Padre Island. The newest hotel on the island boasts large rooms, modern amenities, a resort style pool, direct beach access, and is centrally located to many attractions making it an ideal choice for families. For extended stays there are many rentals available that can accommodate any families’ needs as well. For Nature Lovers Beyond the days spent on the beach, there are many opportunities for nature lovers to experience wildlife around the island. Sea Turtle Inc. is a small conservation and rehabilitation hospital for injured sea turtles and is a must see for anyone visiting South Padre Island. Founded in 1977 by Ila Loetscher to protect the island’s dwindling Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle population, visitors can now learn about the species and how to continue the conservation efforts. Sea Turtle Inc. houses several permanent residents on display, unable to be rehabilitated into the wild, including Allison. Allison, found missing three of four flippers is first sea turtle to wear a successful prosthetic. Children and adults will enjoy the “Meet the Turtles” talks and the feedings. Visitors can aid in the efforts by “adopting” a sea turtle or nest. South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary, located directly beside Sea Turtle Inc. is a birding paradise. With 3,300 feet of boardwalk, the salt and fresh water marshes are bursting with a variety of wildlife. Home to more than just resident and migratory birds, children will love trying to spot crabs, fish, turtles, butterflies, and Big Padre, the resident 12.5’ foot alligator. The center has many activities and programs for children, as well. Choose the adventure package to pose for photos with a juvenile alligator or nonvenomous snake. Families shouldn’t miss the spectacular views of the island from the 5-story observation tower. Explore Discover all the island has to offer with a stop at the South Padre Island Visitor Center. Grab a map of the Sea Turtle Art and Sandcastle Trail.

Families will enjoy exploring the island in search of the 10 painted sea turtle sculptures. Take a photo with each to claim a prize at the Visitor Center. You can also check out 30 sand castles sculpted by professional artists on display year round. The adventure is endless with the activities. It’s easy to plan & book activities inside the Visitor center. Adventure For all levels of adventurers, here are a few of our favorite activities for families. Spend the morning horseback riding at Island Adventure Park. Book a dolphin cruise or fishing charter (most even offer to cook your catch). Everyone will love Gravity Park with the wooden go-cart track, mini golf, and Ferris wheel. Learn to build sand castles like the pros and book a sandcastle lesson on the beach (tools included). Beach Park, a waterpark, (formerly Schlitterbahn) is hugely popular with kids of all ages. Enjoy the shallow waters of the bay, perfect for learning to surf or paddleboard. Rent a jet ski or try kite-surfing. Climb the 100+ steps of the Port Isabel Lighthouse for expansive views of the bay. Book a Black Dragon pirate cruise with treasure hunts, sword fighting, and water pistol battles, it is sure to be loads of family fun for all ages. Food Scene Everything is bigger in Texas and the food scene on South Padre Island is no exception. Josephine’s Kitchen-A breakfast favorite on the island. Order the crepe musette with a flavored coffee. Yummies Bistro-Try the gigantic lemon poppy seed pancakes. Order any mimosa for a glittery surprise! Padre Island Brewing Co.-Order a sampler flight of beers with any of their award winning pizzas. Blackbeard’s Seafood Restaurant-The fish tacos or fried shrimp platter are the favorites. Painted Marlin Grille-Enjoy a sunset, dockside with avocado fries, ahi tuna, and the best margaritas. Bar Louie Restaurant-Live music nightly, Try the voodoo pasta and specialty drinks. Plan your visit around many of the scheduled events. Kite Fest, fireworks, live music and entertainment are just a handful of activities lending to the vibrant culture of South Padre Island. SS UorK NI Where to this spring break?

Beaver Creek, Colorado sets the bar HIGH for family travelers

By Dr. Latesa Grundmann

34 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE March 2021

"Before we left to head back home, we had already "Before left to ahead we had already startedweplanning tripback backhome, in 6 months" started planning a trip back in 6 months"

If

you're looking for somewhere new to vacation with the family, I would highly recommend Beaver Creek, CO. With frequent flights to Denver from Houston, it's a quick trip to your destination.

From the time we landed, I knew the trip was going to be a breeze. With flight delays and cancellations in these uncertain times, reservations can be hard to keep. Upon arriving at Denver Airport, behind schedule due to flight delays, I went into a panic about our shuttle reservation and wondering how we were going to make it to our hotel. Yet the Epic Mountain Express workers were quick to accommodate us even though they were booked for the day. **With kids in tow, I would recommend the personal car service they offer.

Where to Stay

Upon arrival we were gifted with one of the best views The Pine Lodge, A Rock Resort has to offer. Picture a 180 degree view of snowcapped mountains, twinkle lights in the trees around the village, with hues of soft pinks, yellows, and oranges on the horizon at sunrise. A warm cup of coffee or tea, if that’s your preference sitting on the deck in the morning as the sun rises over the mountains to wake the sleepy dreamers. No matter the timing morning, sunset or night, the view was probably the hardest part to leave. The Pine Lodge offers accommodations for families of all sizes from regular rooms to 4-bedroom townhomes with kitchens and patios. Close access to the slopes, walking distance to the village and a quick shuttle ride can get you access all over the resort especially with any tiny feet in tow. The amenities offer everything you need and the dining experience speaks for itself. 35 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE March 2021

tips for how to prepare for bringing along children: 1. Snagging a couple bottles of water and canned air upon arrival before making the trek up the mountain to a resort will help with dehydration, headaches and potentially decrease the effects of possible Altitude Sickness 2. Taking a personal car from the Epic Mountain Express so that the ride is quicker and more personal with children 3. Getting lodging with multiple rooms for everyone to have their own space and ability to sleep, as needed 4. Making sure there is a kitchen in our accommodations; as we travel with a food allergy it makes it easier to cook our own food without issue 5. Grabbing food, snacks, toys, and souvenirs at the Beaver Creek Market to keep everybody happy!

What to Do

I personally have always avoided learning to ski or snowboard, due to my fear in heights. However, at Beaver Creek there are certain lifts that are full gondola or partial gondola to aid in getting children up to the top of the slope. I loved that I had the option for the gondola because it allowed me to take lessons. The Ski school is for everyone 3+ and the kids’ classes were the best thing to experience. Watching the little one’s confidence grow and leaving their parents to hit the slopes was inspiring! Our little one is not quite old enough, but look out when she is! **If you plan on taking snow board lessons for the first time carve out 3-4 days for lessons before you will be able to make it down a hill/slope. Oh, and be prepared to fall a few times! Learning how to snowboard for the first in our thirties was a BLAST, but watching a pack of toddlers’ ride by with better skills, faster speed and less falls was a quick punch to the ego. At the end of the day being able to soak our bodies in the hot tub was a delicious feeling. **Pack those bathing suits and be ready to soak those sore muscles. McCoy Park is Beaver Creek’s newest addition to the slope experience. It offers a 250-acre expansion of lift-served, welcoming ski terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers & riders, as well as a dedicated family friendly zone for beginner and low intermediate skiers. The new learning terrain features 17 trails served by two new lifts, while still maintaining snowshoe and cross-country areas. We didn’t get to experience McCoy Park for ourselves because snowboarding lessons for beginners start on a different mountain in another park. It's definitely on the list for the next visit!

Let's talk Food

Every place we tried was delicious. Grouse Mountain Grill is attached to the The Pine Lodge, but is more well-known of the two places. People fly or drive in just to eat there and head back home! It offers local Colorado farm to table in a scratch kitchen and the finest quality service. Breakfast was good, but dinner was great! Citrea is their newest addition to the restaurant line up. Citrea combines fresh local ingredients with modern culinary interpretations of Mediterranean cuisine. It is in the heart of Beaver Creek Village and runs alongside the ice rink. Delish! **A must do experience is dining at Allie’s Cabin where guests are whisked away from C Bar in Beaver Creek Village to the cabin via an open-air sleigh. You can dine near the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace while enjoying views of Beaver Creek Village below. Known for its atmosphere of rustic and intimate elegance, Allie’s Cabin pours forth a refined, classic Northern Italian fare. Each of these places it made it easy to travel with a gluten allergy and not be concerned about food choices. Not a fan of the snow or the slopes? There is plenty to do!Burton and Beaver Creek Sports are both great places for ski and snowboard rentals but also have great clothing and gear to buy. Options for stores range from children’s clothing and toy stores, jewelry to sunglasses. **The ice rink in the middle of the village is a great place to stop and play or grab a bite to eat. Peppered around the village are fire pits with seating to stop and take in the scenery. We didn’t stay in the village but on the outskirts and the mobile app of Beaver Creek Village helped enhance our visit. We were able to browse services available in the resort and plan transportation. We can't wait to head back soon when our little girl is a little older and can hit the slopes and the ice rink. Beaver Creek, CO is a beautiful place to make some great family memories. For more info: BeaverCreek.com
