Empty Bowls is an international effort to fight hunger, implemented in Houston to benefit the Houston Food Bank. Since the inception of the event, Empty Bowls Houston has raised $991,293 for the Houston Food Bank! (This equates to more than 2.97 million meals for the hungry!)

Attendees enjoy perusing the 1,500-plus one-of-a-kind, handcrafted bowls made and donated by Houston area ceramists and craft artists, which are available for a donation to the Houston Food Bank of $25 per bowl (100% goes to Houston Food Bank). Note: for each $1 donated to Houston Food Bank, THREE meals are provided to the hungry, so, each $25 bowl purchased provides 75 meals!

Port Arthur, Texas is a city with a rich history. It was founded in the late 1800s as a port for shipping timber and rice from the East Texas forests and fields to other parts of the country.
The discovery of oil in the early 20th century transformed Port Arthur into a booming industrial center. The city became home to major refineries, chemical plants, and shipyards that helped fuel America's growth.
During World War II, Port Arthur played an important role in supporting the war effort. Many local residents went off to fight overseas while those who remained worked tirelessly to produce essential supplies for troops abroad.
Today, Port Arthur continues to thrive as an important hub of industry and commerce. But it has also become known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including nearby beaches and wildlife preserves that attract visitors from around the world.

There are some great attractions to explore while you’re in Port Arthur. Be sure to visit the Museum of the Gulf Coast, it’s a must-see museum that celebrates stories and artifacts from the region. This is an interactive space where visitors can learn about the history of Port Arthur, the local culture and its people. You can also see historic items like a replica of a shrimp boat, WWII artifacts, antique cars and much more. The museum also hosts special events like art exhibits and film screenings throughout the year.
Port Arthur is known famously as the home of Janis Joplin. However, did you realize that there are also over 80 music legends, 78 professional athletes and 40 actors, politicians and artists? There’s even an honest to God ‘Oscar’ that was donated by a woman who won for Costume Design back in the 1940s! The day was wide open before us. And by wide open I mean we didn’t have school. We were no longer tethered to packing lunches and getting to the bus stop. No longer slaves to homework calendars and after-school activities. It was a day off. We should celebrate!
We could go to that new science museum. Or maybe we should head to the movies. No, save those for a rainy day. Hmmm…. the beach? The park? Or maybe a picnic at the park followed by ice cream at the beach? There was no shortage of possibilities.
My kids barely noticed me, happy to start their day void of the typical structure. They may have felt relaxed, basking in their newfound freedom. I, on the other hand, was busy figuring out how to make the day magical.
I had pictures in my mind of what the other parents would be doing with their kids. I scolded myself for not thinking ahead to have the kids invite friends over so they could come to enjoy the day of fun I was spinning in my mind. Oh, well. I could still make the day magical for my three.
Looking around I saw all the things that still had to be done. The beds to be made, the dirty dishes piled in the sink, the work email notifications on my phone. School may have ended, but real life didn’t. There was a tug-of-war going on in my head between
the magic I expected myself to create and the real-life things that had to get done.
Somehow I had developed an expectation that life was a great big Instagram feed for the world to see. This feed represented who I am, but also who I want to be, who I think others want me to be, and who I can never be. In all the headlines telling me how to “Create a Magical Summer” and “Make Memories that Last a Lifetime” I began running faster and faster on a hamster wheel of creating a magical childhood for my kids.
Just like I am never going to be five foot eight and size two (no matter how high the heels and how tight the Spanx), I’m never going to entertain my kids 24/7. Even the thought is exhausting.
I want to do fun things with my kids, but not at the expense of living life, real life. They need to see that there is a balance between fun and normal, or better yet, a melding of the two. And while I may be able to lead them that way, I can’t navigate the whole way for them.
If I want them to grow up to be more than consumers of this beautiful world, I need to give them the chance to live in it, contribute to it, and be part of it. We are not spectators, but we are contributors, active participants in creating a life we love. And this means doing things that don’t make the Instagram feed.
I look around and see them. One is plugged in to an audiobook, one is playing a video game and one is heading out on a scooter. They are content for the moment, so I permit myself to be content. I know that the moment won’t last forever, and as I exhale I think about what needs to happen and what we want to happen.
The day is a day. It is magical simply because it exists. There will be laundry to fold today. And they will help. But if we do that right after lunch we can grab an ice cream and head to the park.
It is not my job to entertain my kids. And they shouldn’t be entertained all day. We can, however, find ways to have fun in real life. To have beach days and home days. To have chore times and break times. To do nothing and to do something amazing.
Summer isn’t about endless entertaining. It’s simply about enjoying the moments and living life along the way.

Think about her. Truly. There are endless gift ideas out there and that can feel overwhelming. Often, we end up buying something because it seems like what everyone is telling us to do (or it was easy!) Before you make a purchase spend a little time thinking about whom you are giving the gift to and ask yourself these questions:
• What makes her smile?
• What do I see her looking at in stores or on her phone?
• How can I make her feel special?
• Does she have a favorite thing or hobby that she rarely makes time for?
• What is something she wouldn’t do for herself? As you think about these questions, really focus on her. If you’re not sure, as some of the people she is close to like a good friend or her sister. Even older kids and teens can lend
valuable insight. Remember, making her feel seen and understood means focusing on her instead of what you think she needs.
Mother’s Day is not a surprise. The sooner you start thinking about this and shop, the better. April is a great time to shop because it takes the last-minute stress out of the equation. If you didn’t start early, however, there are still so many great options. And make things easier next year by putting a reminder on your phone now for shopping next April.

Parents are used to always putting their kids first. From the moment they wake up in the morning until the time they go to bed at night, they’re constantly on our minds. What do they need? In Texas, high school football is slightly less important than breathing, but just barely. Where myths and legends are born, and touchdown-scoring heroes are deified statewide on Friday nights in big city stadiums and small farming communities alike, identities are shaped in the fall by what happens on patches of grassy turf flanked by creaky wooden bleachers.
But there is a side to the history of Texas high school football that most people don’t know. For almost 50 years of Texas’ story, high school sports were segregated and as a result, formed individual traditions and rivalries. This is the type of history that The Bryan Museum LIVES to tell! This Texas history museum in Galveston has teamed up with celebrated author, Michael Hurd, to do just that.
Based on his book, Thursday Night Lights: The Story of Black High School Football in Texas, this compelling history has been brought to life in a dynamic exhibit both introducing and honoring the African American men and boys who coached and played organized football at African American high schools in Texas for half a socially dark century.
The exhibit traces the history of a league that produced
nine members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including “Mean”
Joe Greene, Ken Houston, and Dick “Night Train” Lane.
In addition to Hall of Famers, the PVIL also produced players that helped to break the color barrier, such as Ben Kelly, the first Black player in the South to integrate a collegiate football program in 1953 and Eldridge Dickey, the first Black quarterback drafted in the first round of the National Football League Draft in 1968.
Featuring innovative art by Reginald C. Adams, dozens of vintage images and artifacts, videos, interviews, and interactive displays, Thursday Night Lights pulls this bygone era of Texas history from the shadows. The exhibit will be on display at The Bryan Museum from April 20th until July 2nd.

Miller Outdoor Theatre helps families share a love of the arts and time spent together. The open-air theater in Hermann Park has, for generations, been a gathering spot on summer nights where Houstonians can enjoy completely free performances by performing arts groups from around the city and around the globe. Now, as Miller celebrates its centennial, it has programming from March through mid-November.
As the sun sinks over Hermann Park nearly every day from March to midNovember, the lights come up at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The theater celebrates its centennial this year, with a host of special programs, bringing new acts and old favorites back onto its stage. For generations of Houstonians, Miller has been a place for families to gather in the summer twilight and share excitement over a wide selection of music, theater and dance performances.
It's also a place where many young people first saw a live show of any kind, cementing in them a love of the arts, a curiosity about other cultures and the memories of sharing it all with family and friends.
“Miller Outdoor Theatre offers probably the most diverse array of arts programming in the city,” said Cissy Segall, Miller Outdoor Theatre’s managing director. “It’s a wonderful thing to be able to bring children at a young age out here to expose them to an artistic presentation that is different from their family’s culture. Miller is welcoming setting, and it gives the chance to learn about arts and culture in a way you might not otherwise.”
Often, those who see shows at Miller as young children go on to be performers themselves. One of those is ballerina Lauren Anderson, who became the first Black principal dancer with the Houston Ballet, where she danced from 1983 to 2006. She sat on the hill in Hermann Park and watched performances at Miller, and she calls it one of the city’s treasured landmarks.
“Miller Outdoor Theatre is so important to Houston because it is the first and only theatrical experience for many, many people,” she said. “With
Miller's varied repertoire, there is representation in all artform and cultures. I felt as though I had arrived when I danced on Miller's stage for the first time. I had!"
And then there is Jorge Casco. Segall shares the story of how, as a teen, he came to Miller to see a daytime performance Fly Dance Company.
“Jorge was in middle school and he’d been doing hip-hop dance on his own,” Segall said. “’They’re doing what I do!’ he said to me.
Now, he’s the executive director of that group, which still performs often at Miller.
"Performing at Miller is a mix of emotions because I see myself in the company on the stage and in the audience," Casco said. "We've worked really hard to be able to play in prestigious theatres all over the world but nothing compares to playing Miller. Every time we hit that Miller stage, it's just beautiful; all those kids, families, and people soaking in all those colors, sounds, and movement. I hope this generation is inspired just like I was."
Even if children don’t become actors or dancers or other performing artists themselves,
Segall knows there’s still value in helping them encounter the arts. In addition to seeing incredible performances from all over the world – for free –kids learn why the arts matter at all.
“The arts show us who we are,” said Segall. “And everyone in Houston can see themselves on our stage. Representation matters for a child, no matter what their background.”
And those who see arts programming as children are very likely to continue seeing (and supporting) the arts when they grow up. Segall loves it when she can walk around the theater grounds before or after a performance, talking to members of the audience, nearly all of whom tell her some version of the same story: Miller is about making memories.
“We had our first date here, we got engaged here, we celebrated a birthday here, my mother would take me and now I’m taking my child,” she said. “That’s such a part of what Miller is about. And those stories all become part of a family’s history, to be treasured and passed down.”
The next special 100th anniversary celebration event is July 14-15, featuring a TUTS Musicals at Miller retrospective. It features an evening of imagination and performance with interactive puppet shows, magicians, a collaborative mural and more, including the opportunity to take a photo in the larger-than-life birthday cake. Celebratory events from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. with the TUTS performance at 8:30 p.m.
