RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF WOMEN’S HEALTH Women’s health is important for everyone. With National Women’s Health Week and Mother’s Day this month, we’re reminded how critical it is for women to prioritize their wellbeing. Dr. Sidra Yunas is an OB/GYN with Memorial Hermann Medical Group who sees patients from adolescence to adulthood. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), and unpacks the importance of women’s health and the unique issues women face today.

Q: What screenings should women not delay?

A: Women are at heightened risk for breast cancer and cervical cancer simply due to their gender, which is why it’s important to keep up with regular screenings. The United States Preventative Services Task Force recommends that women start receiving cervical cancer screenings (or Pap smears) starting at age 21, regardless of sexual activity, receiving one at least every three years if the results are normal. Cervical cancer screenings can also include HPV testing, as certain types of HPV increase the risk of developing cervical cancer. Patients can space out cervical cancer screenings every five years if both the Pap smear and HPV tests are negative. Patients can also stop having cervical cancer screenings after age 65 if they have normal results. Some women should also get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as they can cause serious health problems if left untreated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all sexually active women under the age of 25 should receive annual testing for certain STIs. For breast cancer screenings, women will receive clinical breast exams performed by their OB/ GYN or primary care physician at annual

appointments. However, starting at age 40, women should talk with their doctor about getting annual screening mammograms. If they have a family history of breast cancer, it is encouraged to start screenings earlier. Older women have an increased risk of developing osteoporosis because their bones aren’t receiving as much estrogen as they were during their reproductive stage. If you are over 65 years old or postmenopausal, then you should receive a bone density screening test for osteoporosis.

Q: Why should women prioritize mental health?

A: The pandemic has certainly taken a mental toll on all of us. For many women, this could mean balancing kids and a career at home or even having a baby during a pandemic without being able to see their family. Mental health has been thrown into the spotlight, and it’s incredibly important for women to not only take care of their physical wellbeing, but also their emotional wellbeing. This is especially true for new mothers who have been facing sleepless nights and are at risk for developing post-partum depression from hormonal shifts and abrupt lifestyle changes. Because mental health is a priority, doctors have been checking in with patients to make sure they’re feeling okay and providing them with personalized resources if they need them.

Q: Are women safe getting the COVID-19 vaccine?

A: Women are free to make their own informed decisions regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. However, there is a lot of public misinformation about the safety of the vaccine for those who are pregnant, wanting to get pregnant or bre a st fe e d i ng. To le a r n more , v i sit memorialhermann.org/maternity.

Memorial Hermann offers comprehensive, integrated and personalized care for all women. Learn more at memorialhermann.org/womenshealth Advancing health. Personalizing care. 3 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

A recent study of 131 women of reproductive age, published in the Amer ican Jour nal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, found that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were safe for pregnant and Sidra Yunas, MD lactating women. For OB/GYN breastfeeding women, researchers have found that antibodies can pass through breastmilk in mothers who have recovered from COVID-19, and the study found that mothers who are vaccinated are able to pass antibodies onto their babies. Keep in mind, symptomatic pregnant women with COVID-19 are at increased risk of more severe illness and death compared to nonpregnant individuals, making the benefits of the vaccine significant. Overall, the risks for contracting COVID-19 outweigh any potential risks from the COVID-19 vaccine, and medical experts encourage everyone to get vaccinated when they are able.

Q: What are different ways women can take care of themselves?

A: Women, especially mothers, often put their health last because many times they prioritize taking care of others. Not only should women keep up with their routine screenings, but they should also keep up with their annual physicals and OB/GYN exams for regular checkups. It’s also important that women trust their bodies. If you notice any changes that seem off, whether it’s during pregnancy, your menstrual cycle or anything else, consult your healthcare provider to address the issue. Lastly, women should ensure they’re exercising, eating healthy and taking time for themselves.

We all have many hats we wear as we go through our life. Mother. Daughter. Sister. Grandmother (Nona). Aunt (YaYa). Business Woman. Friend. At times, it can be overwhelming and exhausting. So, once a year, we take a moment to celebrate one of those hats we wear, Motherhood. Once a year, the world acknowledges what an important role we fill. It is HFM's job to celebrate Moms year- round, but this issue in particular, is dedicated to all those ladies out there who are KILLING it each and every day! In this issue, our lead feature story highlights seven incredible women and what they are doing every day to raise their families and stay true to who they are in the process! We celebrated them at The Blossom Hotel with a nice little brunch and photo shoot wearing the amazing Chloe Dao dresses you will see in this issue and online. Take a moment to read their stories and maybe find a little inspiration.

That may also mean that you need to get the kids out of the house! Send them to camp this summer. We have a great selection of a variety of day and overnight camps to choose from! Give you & your kids the gift of camp - you will all be the better for it.

Looking for inspiration in other areas? How about some much needed "Me Time" or "Catching Some Couple Time" ?? It's important to remember that you need to be whole & healthy or you are no good to anyone else. Carve out the moments you need each and every day to insure that happens.

Motherhood is not for the faint of heart, and there is no manual for success. These local supermoms represent the amazing range of energy and grit that are required for the job. On any given day, these seven women - ages 35 to 52, are solo parenting, leading projects in the Texas Medical Center or in their self-made businesses and advocating for their children and patients’ needs all while continuing to navigate the everchanging pandemic. Taking time for themselves isn’t always priority but we were honored to fill their cups with a little extra love (and champagne) for Mother’s Day!

Priscilla - 38

AIR FORCE NATIONAL GUARD SERVICE MEMBER AND SOCIAL WORKER SUPERMOM TO KAYLAH (12), XAVIER (6)

BESIDES YOUR FAMILY, WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? I am passionate about my civilian job. Being in a healthcare profession can be exhausting but rewarding. When my patients tell me how much they appreciate me for advocating or listening to them, it gives me so much satisfaction and fulfillment.

WHAT IS YOUR SUPERMOM SUPERPOWER? Resiliency. Sometimes I wonder how I am surviving two careers, raising a child with autism, supporting my veteran husband 8 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

and supporting my mother. I am constantly being pulled in so many directions but my kids are my drive to always get back up and keep going.

HOW HAS MOTHERHOOD SURPRISED YOU? When I was a child and watched family shows, solving problems within a family seemed so simple. In reality, it takes continuous work and maintenance to ensure everyone is happy and feeling like their best selves. As a mental health professional, I am constantly bringing those skills home.

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT HOUSTON WHEN IT COMES TO RAISING CHILDREN?

fortune to be called “Mommy”, there’s nothing like it in the world!

Houston is special because it is such a multicultural city! I also love that we’re close to nature areas like the Hill Country, state and national parks and beaches.

HOW HAS MOTHERHOOD SURPRISED YOU?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF MOTHERHOOD? My favorite is the unconditional love and seeing life through my daughter’s eyes. I feel so

NAME:

Elizabeth - 38

STAY-AT-HOME MOM, ARTIST SUPERMOM TO GABRIEL (9), DANIEL (6), VIVIAN (3), EVELYN (1.5)

WHAT IS YOUR SUPERMOM NAME? Stretch Arm Mom because I’m always stretched so thin!

HOW HAS MOTHERHOOD SURPRISED YOU? I was prepared for all of the joys of motherhood but not the worry, anxiety, and bittersweet feeling of them growing up. Time can’t stop and only goes by faster with more children and activities.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT RAISING YOUR CHILDREN IN HOUSTON? The diversity! I grew up in a small town that lacked diversity. I am so proud to be raising my children among people who come from different cultures, backgrounds, professions, and views. Diversity is a necessity, and Houston is so very special when it comes to blending cultures and celebrating differences.

9 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

I am surprised by the energy that I have! I always pictured myself at 22 years with my first child, like my mom. I thought 30 years old would be my childbirth deadline but life is full of surprises! At age 48, Olive was born! The best lifechange ever!

WHAT IS YOUR SUPERMOM NAME?

BESIDES YOUR FAMILY, WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?

“Tank” because I just roll through everything and seem unphased. It’s pretty much how I approach anything that the kids bring to me: we’ll figure this out; let’s just keep going.

Health and mental health advocacy. My children and I have several chronic health issues and it’s important to learn and raise awareness about them; you never know who you may help. No one should have to navigate healthcare alone. If by sharing our stories and experiences, we help one person or family feel validated in their experience or help them to find answers, that’s all I want to accomplish.

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT HOUSTON WHEN IT COMES TO RAISING CHILDREN? There are so many amazing people and cultures represented; the kids are able to see and learn from others, taste a variety of foods, try new things. We’re very fortunate.

HOW DO YOU TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF?

BESIDES YOUR FAMILY, WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?

Traveling really is the best way for me to reset my spirit and having my daughter there with me makes it an even better experience. I find a lot of healing in nature. The beauty and the quietness are quite literally a breath of fresh air from the chaos on the frontlines of a pandemic. Being in the hospital setting day after day and year after year is taxing on the soul. Getting away from the constant trauma, alarms, unrelenting pressures, impossible expectations, and heartbreaking stories is what helps me survive it.

Advocacy for healthcare workers and safe staffing ratios. Safe staffing saves lives! I have worked in healthcare for 12 years and as a Registered Nurse for eight. I started working on the frontlines of the pandemic in 2020 and have been there ever since. For so long, healthcare workers have been afraid to speak up over the issues we see. We have families that depend on us, and it leaves us with an impossible choice between caring for our families and advocating for our patients. I want better for them, better for my family, and better for our community.

NAME:

Donna - 41

SUPERMOM TO LEVI (12)

WHAT IS YOUR SUPERMOM NAME? Mom is my Supermom name. It’s simple, but my journey to motherhood was just the opposite – it was very complex. I always wanted a house full of kids. Accepting that my body was only able to create one miracle, Levi, was a reality that took some time to accept. Once I came to terms with this, I made a choice to show up every day and embrace what life has given me.

NAME:

Nicole - 42

SUPERMOM TO KENDRA (14), KRISSY (14), KATEY (3)

SHARE SOME OF YOUR PERSONAL OR PROFESSIONAL GOALS WITH US. My personal and professional goals are one in the same. I’d like to help other women become Mom-Investors, achieving home ownership multiple times over and financial independence!

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? When I was 16 years old my mother unexpectedly died from complications of diabetes. Like many mothers, she didn’t prioritize her own health. So, my best advice was given by my mother unintentionally,

“Take care of yourself Nikki, so that you can be there for your family for years to come.” I miss that lady. She was an angel. Everyday, mothers transform into their children’s cheerleaders, teachers, defenders, friends and guides through life. Although bittersweet, we watch them with immense pride as they navigate the complexities of the world. It is an incredible badge of honor to be given the title of mom, mommy, madre, mama, eomma or mother. Visit www.houstonfamilymagazine. com to read the full interviews with these remarkable women and don’t forget to celebrate the mothers in your life this month and every day! 11 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF MOTHERHOOD? Having a front row seat to watch this once tiny human grow up and navigate the world to become the best version of himself. I love watching him succeed and hearing his opinions and ideas. I admire his determination and drive to overcome any and all obstacles.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Surprise your kid! Pick them up early from school every once in a while. Go on a trip, turn an everyday activity into an adventure.

WHAT DOES MOM

Really

WANT FOR MOTHER’S DAY written by Jill Morgenstern

12 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

W

hile it’s nice not to have to cook for Mother’s Day, the restaurants are crowded and reservations can be hard to get! What do moms really want for Mother’s Day? We surveyed moms around the Houston area and beyond to find out. Their answers might surprise you and give you some ideas for the mothers in your life:

Sleeping in

Sleep is often in short supply for moms. This is an especially important one for new mothers who may be severely lacking in this important area. Whether it’s the chance to sleep late in the morning or a well deserved afternoon nap, you’ll be the hero if you can make this one happen!

A Squeaky Clean Home

What could be more luxurious than a clean home? Whether you put in the elbow grease yourself or hire a company or cleaning person, mom will appreciate not having to lift a finger on her special day.

Nix the Arguments

It’s always a great day to be attentive to our words and try not to argue. But it’s especially appreciated on mother’s day! Moms want their children to try particularly hard to get along on their special day.

Time Together

The most requested gift of all was time with their children. “No sass, no stuff. Just having my kids near me.” requested Teresa Nounou who lives just west of Houston. There are many ways to consider spending that time together: - Give mom the gift of a mother/child manicure and/or pedicure. Especially if mom usually does her own nails, this could be a special splurge. - Spend time in nature. May is perfect for spending time outdoors. It’s warmed up enough to enjoy the weather without the stifling heat we’ll experience later on this summer. Maybe mom would enjoy a hike at one of the greater Houston Area’s many parks or even a trip to Galveston. Or she might enjoy a picnic or bike ride.

- Do some yoga together. Houston has many yoga studios. Or if mom is more of a homebody, try hiring a private instructor to work out together with all the comforts of home.

great gifts for mom

- Volunteer together. The Houston Food Bank takes volunteer registration online. No experience is necessary. - Visit one of Houston’s many museums together! The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has multiple exhibits through May such as Shahzia Sikander: Extraordinary Realities or Virtual Realities: The Art of M.C. Escher from the Michael S. Sachs Collection. - Take a cooking class together. Most moms said they did not want to cook a regular dinner for mother’s day, but what about a cooking class? Sur la Table on West Gray or Town and Country Boulevard have many interesting classes.

SALLYE ANDER SKIN SAVER GIFT SET Includes: Rescue Me, Nourish Under Eye Balm & Black Soap. $47 • sallyeander.com

Time Alone

Alternately some moms just want a little time at home alone on mother’s day. It might just be time to run those errands and leave the house with the kids for a little while, leaving mom to indulge herself in some quiet time. Aliza Garetz of Houston says she likes it when her husband takes her daughter out and about and allows her to have a quiet day by herself at home.

Or Both!

Heather Long from Appleton, Wisconsin wants time to spend with her children but would also enjoy a massage by herself. What Mom wouldn’t?

TRUSENS AIR PURIFIER Air purifiers reimagined with remote sensing technology, dual flow air streams and DuPont™ filtration. $149+ • trusens.com

Flowers

The old standby is still a favorite with many moms. No need to spend a fortune if mom is close by. Trader Joes and many grocery stores have a great selection for a reasonable price. Of course there are always the flower shops. Or have flowers delivered for something extra special.

When it comes to Mother’s Day, it’s really true that it’s the thought that counts. Most mothers just wanted to know that they are appreciated and loved.

CATCH SOME

••••• ••••• •••••

Couple Time written by Jill Morgenstern 14 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

>>>>>>>

Try to spend a few moments together while kids are at activities. A parent doesn’t need to watch each and every soccer practice or ballet class. Most parents have taken this time for an occasional quick trip to the grocery store or other errand anyway. Why not spend a little of that time with your spouse?

DON’T

Don’t forget to pick up your child!

DO

Use TV for a babysitter, but use it judiciously. Most children watch some TV each week. Why not take advantage? Try to save your child’s TV time for when both you and your spouse will be home together.

DON’T

Don’t leave your child unattended in front of the TV for several hours. There is a limit for ignoring your child and the skipped meals may be cause for concern.

DO

Hit the gym. Many gyms offer free childcare as part of their services. Take them up on it and meet your spouse for a game of basketball, spotting each other on weights, or taking an aerobics class together.

DON’T

Don’t hide out in the locker room reading a magazine. Just kidding! You can hide out in the locker room reading a magazine if you want. After all, you’ve already paid the gym membership!

DO

Reinstate nap time. Even children too old to nap can take advantage of a scheduled rest time. Treat it with the same routine as you do bedtime. Then let your children know that it’s fine to play quietly in their rooms as long as they only come out for a trip to the bathroom.

DON’T

Don’t forget to let them know when they can come out of the bedroom.

DO

Do try to meet your spouse for lunch. If your children are school age, a lunch date is the perfect opportunity to grab a few quick moments together.

DON’T

Don’t abandon infants in favor of a lunch date. Soon they will be in school and this option will be yours for the taking!

DO

Enjoy an early breakfast together on the weekend. If you’re not too sleep deprived, try waking up extra early one weekend morning and indulging in a child free breakfast.

DON’T

Don’t make too much noise. Some children seem to have a sixth sense about when their parents awaken and even tip toeing around the kitchen might set off their ESP. In fact, breakfast out on the patio might be what nabs you the most free time.

DO

Take advantage of “Kids Night Out” programs. These are often run by activity or community centers or churches. Hours will vary but these usually have fun activities occasionally scheduled for children.

with a little creativity each of us can get that much needed personal time with a significant other

DO

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Some parents are lucky enough to have family close by, grandparents ready and waiting to whisk the kids off for a weekend while their parents luxuriate in the quiet of a child free home. Others of us are not so lucky and require a babysitter for even the smallest time alone. But with a little creativity each of us can get that much needed personal time with a significant other, even without hiring a babysitter, or involving nosy neighbors or investigative reporters. Here are a few dos and don’ts for sneaking in a few moments of alone time together:

DON’T

Leave your kid with total strangers. Get to know the location and ask for recommendations before dropping your child off.

By following these simple tips, you too can gain some alone time

with your spouse. Be sure to follow only the dos and not the don’ts to create a healthy environment for your marriage. 15 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

me time!

TAKING SOME TIME FOR

COMMITTING EVEN A LITTLE BIT OF TIME FOR YOURSELF DOES A GREAT DEAL OF GOOD FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING. HERE ARE A FEW LOCAL PLACES AND GROUPS THAT YOU CAN CONSIDER FOR YOUR NEXT ME TIME DATE:

16 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

Parenthood is not for the faint of heart. It can be draining and requires the maximum level of patience, decisionmaking and physical engagement. It quite literally requires a parent to give (or heal) blood, sweat and tears every single day. Many days it can feel as if 24 hours just isn’t enough time in a day to take care of everyone, and so the decision is often made to give any spare time we might have to our families and work, leaving nothing for ourselves.

M

e Time is not a selfish act but rather a necessary mindful act of love for yourself and in turn for others. How can we expect to pour love into our families when our cup is empty? Me Time is about being present with your mind and body as they are connected and must be recharged equally to function at an optimal level. There are no specific ways to spend your well-deserved break. Me Time can range from 30 minutes to 24 hours and what you do with your time is a personal choice but should include quality activities that are enjoyable and fulfilling to you. We asked some of our local parents to share some of their favorite Me Time activities:

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES “Early morning gym time is my time. I play loud music and take care of my body before starting my day.” “Hot Yoga 3 times a week. Give me all the sweat and heat!” “Sometimes I just blast music and have a solo dance party.”

• Check out Houston’s Art Murals • Make your own candle at the Candle Bar • Beginner’s Level Volleyball, Tennis, Kickball and Soccer Group

MEDITATION, MUSIC AND ART “Sometimes I paint during what used to be my commute time from the office so I can transition from work to homelife.

• Workout at Discovery Green

“I love going to sit in silence at Rothko Chapel.”

• Have a solo sleepover at the Laura Hotel

“I schedule uninterrupted time for myself every day from 5:00am-6:30am which includes yoga, meditation, journaling, reading and writing.”

• Be inspired by art in the Houston Museum District • Japanese Garden at Hermann Park

“I love coloring pretty pictures in adult coloring books. It’s simple, calming and makes me happy.”

“I put on noise-cancelling ear phones and just sit in silence— watch the birds out my window, pet an animal. Doesn’t matter what I’m doing as long as all the noise is stopped.”

“Just a few quiet minutes outside to have a vitamin D recharge.”

“I enjoy going to dance classes!”

“Give me all the ice cream with all the crunchy toppings!”

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS

“Reality TV! The trashier the better.”

“I have a reoccurring coffee date with my girlfriends every month.” “I invite a friend on a walk or hike in the city. It’s a good time to catch up and workout at the same time.” “I try to meet up with girlfriends for a few drinks or dinner every month or so.”

SELF-CARE “Deep tissue massages to work out all of the body aches.” “A hot bath with bubbles and books. And a glass of wine, too. “ “Getting manicures, pedicures or going to the hair salon is a perfect time for me to chat with adults without my children interrupting.” “I look forward to going to my therapy session each week.”

“I love eating my kids snacks after they go to bed.” “The best days are being at home by myself…with no to do list waiting for me!”

FOR THE LOVE OF HOBBIES “I play for an adult softball league and I look forward to going every week!” “Baking and trying out new recipes brings me so much joy.” “I’ve started roller skating again!” “I play in a billiard league for a couple hours per week.”

TAKE ME AWAY! “Waking up on MY time, alone…in a hotel room. No kids, no sharing the bed, just me.”

“Connecting with water. Drinking it, playing in it, soaking in it.”

“A massage on a beach with the sounds of nature as my music of choice!”

“I’d love to rent a beach house with my girlfriends or other couples for a quick getaway. In reality, I’ll start missing my kids after 24 hours! But that’s just enough time away for me to reset.”

“A long, hot shower with eucalyptus body wash and the lights off.

Home Alone Is your child ready? By Sarah Lyons

G iving kids the responsibility to

stay home alone can be a positive and confidence building experience, a rite of passage. Every parent will reach the point where they are faced with the decision whether their child is ready to stay home alone. How do you know they are ready? Children must have the skills and maturity to handle being on their own safely. There is no magical age that determines a child is ready to be home alone but kids who are ready show the following signs: Desires to stay home alone and is not fearful being alone in the home Exhibits good decision making Shows that he is aware of others and his surroundings Proves herself to be responsible and trustworthy Knows home address and phone number as well as how to get in touch with parents Can make a snack for themselves Knows how to use a phone, call a neighbor for help, and dial 911 Follows simple rules and instructions Knows basic first aid

18 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

Leaving kids home alone for the first time is a big step. Even if kids are not planning

to babysit, consider enrolling them in a babysitting class because the skills taught there can be very useful for kids who are beginning to stay home alone. If you believe your child is ready, how can parents prepare them for success?

Go over the rules Are friends allowed to come over? Is the child allowed to leave the house? Are there cable channels the child is not permitted to watch? Go over these and any other family rules and make it clear that your child understands.

Discuss possible situations If someone comes to the door what is the child to do? If the phone rings, is the child to answer? How will they respond if someone asks to speak to the parent? “She is busy right now. Can I take a message?” is a good response.

Kitchen safety Make sure the child knows how to use kitchen appliances and tools. Discuss what they are allowed to make in the kitchen. Only cold snacks? Can they use the microwave?

Emergency preparedness Does your child know what to do in case of smoke or a fire? What should he do if there are severe storms? Does she know basic first aid? Post emergency phone numbers and contact information so your child has it in case of an emergency. Discuss who to contact if parents are unreachable (a neighbor, family member or friend).

Create a list of "Dos" and "Don'ts” Don’t play with matches or lighters. Don’t let anyone in the house. Don’t leave the house, except in an emergency situation. Do call and check in when you get home from school. Do work on homework and chores. Each family is different and will have their own list of what is expected.

Role play Act out different scenarios that may arise. Pretend that the child needs to reach you, what will they do? How would they call 911? What would they do in case of a fire? Pretend the phone rings, how will they answer? By walking through different situations kids will be better prepared if the unexpected happens.

Start slow Begin by leaving the child for a short 15-30 minutes at a time and slowly increase. Talk about any questions or problems that may have arisen. Ask your child about their feelings when home alone. If the child is fearful, they may not be ready to be on their own.

Speak Your Child's

Love Language Written by Jill Morgenstern

G

rowing up feeling loved helps children overcome many obstacles. It contributes to a feeling of well-being that will help them excel in school, friendships, and all other areas of their lives. It even helps when it comes to being disciplined. “Often, parents assume that their kids just ‘know’ they love them, or that saying ‘I love you’ will be enough.” say Gary Chapman and Ross Campell in their book “The 5 Love Languages of Children.” But in order to feel truly loved, children need the adults in their lives to put those feelings into action. By learning to speak a child’s love languages, a parent can ensure the child feels loved. Many parents are familiar with the love languages: words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and receiving gifts. Like adults, children each have a primary love language that they respond to best, but speaking all five love languages is even more beneficial since children will respond to the other love languages as well as their primary one. In addition, children’s love languages may change over time as they mature.

Available at Barnes & Noble $15.99 barnesandnoble.com

Page 1 30 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE May 2022

If your child is younger than five years old, Chapman and Campbell recommend treating all five love languages equally. An older child’s love language can be discovered in several ways. One way is by paying careful attention to how they express their love and affection to you and to others. Is your child always drawing pictures for you? Maybe his love language is receiving gifts. A particularly snuggly child’s primary love language may be physical touch while a child who is generous with compliments may have words of affirmation as their primary love language. Another good way to find out more about your child’s love language is to listen to what your child requests and what they complain about. Do they often ask your opinion on how they are doing in their work or play? They might be showing a preference for words of affirmation. Likewise complaints about you being too busy can be considered a request for quality time. Be careful to look for patterns and to remember that a preference for quality time at age five may have changed by the time your child is ten or fifteen. One last way to search for your child’s love language is to give him or her choices. Says Dr. Suzanne Barchers, Education Advisor at Lingokids, “If your child is old enough, it’s fine to say, ‘I noticed you weren’t interested in that gift I brought you. If you had a choice, what would it be? Going to dinner together, just you and me? Going with me to work and helping me out for a few hours?…’ Probe until you get some clues.”

Receiving Gifts

Receiving gifts can be one of the more complicated love languages. Children will sense if a parent is trying to bribe them with a gift or if a parent is just buying gifts to make up for the fact that they don’t have time to spend with the child. Says Dr. Barchers, “Gifts don’t have to be big and extravagant. They should, however, be thoughtful. Finding that perfect color of a barrette or a memorable trinket, can be just right.” Don’t make the gift contingent on certain behavior and make sure that the gifts reflect the interests of your child.

Quality Time Quality time is important to all children but particularly so if this is your child’s primary love language. If you already have activities you know both you and your children enjoy, try to examine how often you’re doing them and see if you can increase the time spent together. Of course, it doesn’t have to be an activity you both enjoy. Your child will sense if you’re doing an activity solely for his or her pleasure and might even appreciate it more. Even activities such as cleaning and chores can have the desired effect of making a family feel closer. Quality time should be as free from distractions as possible so although you will typically want to take pictures of special events, try and spend as little time with your phone as possible.

Physical Touch

This can be the easiest love language to use because of the constant opportunities to give a hug or cozy up and get snuggly. Helping your child feel loved can be as easy as choosing a spot next to your child on the couch for movie night. Or maybe you give extra hugs when leaving for school in the morning. Even physical activities such as wrestling together or a tickle fight can help your child feel loved. If you are not physically affectionate by nature, you may want to consciously set an achievable goal for yourself to do something simple each day like stroke your child’s hair or even give a high five.

Words of Affirmation

For a child whose love language is words of affirmation, prioritize encouraging words, words of affection, and specific praise. Say, “I love you” often. Showcasing their artwork can send an affirmative message to a creative child. Try sending an older child an encouraging text message.

Acts of Service

This love language can be a delicate balance. Of course we want our children to mature and become more independent as they grow. But children can feel particularly loved when their parents perform acts of service, doing things for their children that they may or may not be able to do independently. An act of service might be carrying your child to bed even though you’re sure they’re only pretending to be asleep, making a special surprise meal for your child, or doing their chores for them when you know they’ve had a hard day.
