Zoo! This year the Zoo will celebrate its tenth year as one of Houston’s most beloved holiday traditions. Now through Jan. 9, guests will
take in the sights and sounds of
the season as they stroll through
the transformed winter wonderful. They will enjoy the beautiful Zoo grounds illuminated with earth-
friendly LED bulbs and can sip their
hot chocolate by one of the smoresmaking stations or walk through
the 125-foot-long Infinity Tunnel of
Light. Santa returns to his workshop to take photos with all the good little boys and girls.
Guests will have the opportunity to experience the Holiday Grove presented by TXU Energy where thousands of glowing tulips are synchronized to music under the historic oak trees. A canopy of glowing flowers and butterflies in the hanging pollinator garden dazzle families. Guests will have a glowing underwater adventure when they walk under illuminated jellyfish as the Great Ape Gallery transforms into the Illuminated Ocean, presented by HEB. TXU Energy Presents Zoo Lights is a separately ticketed event, held daily from 5:30 – 10:30 p.m. with the last entry at 9:30 p.m. The Zoo closes for the day at 4:00 p.m. and re-opens as TXU Energy Presents Zoo Lights at 5:30 p.m. Tickets will not be available at the gate and must be purchased online. Ticket prices start at $14.95. For the best price, guests are encouraged to buy tickets early. Recycling lights keeps them out of landfills, less space for landfills means more space for animals. The Zoo has recycled more than 24,000 lbs. of holiday lights- that is the same weight as two adult Asian elephants!

This movie is heartwarming and is a great gateway for difficult conversations about bullying and accepting others who appear to be different from us. (Rated PG)

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT is sure to be a hit with the whole family. You can take it to the next level by adding these activities that are both fun and educational. Here are some family friendly movies with ideas for activities, snacks, crafts, outings, and books to continue the fun.
Do that: Talk to your kids about bullying. What qualifies as bully behavior? How do you handle it? How can you help a person who is a victim of bullying? Snack on this: Since Auggie is headed to school for the first time, why not pack your kids a sack lunch? This could include a traditional sandwich and sides or you could fill lunch sacks with movie popcorn and candy. Serve cartons of milk or juice to wash it down. Another fun idea, choose a favorite hot lunch and serve it at home. Create that: Make encouraging cards to send to friends who could use a boost and mail or hand deliver your cards. Go there: Declare a “Random Acts of Kindness Day” and spread cheer and good vibes in your community. Some ideas include - paying for the person behind you in the drive through line, doing yard work for a neighbor, dropping a card or gift off for a friend who could use some cheer, or passing out gift cards to community workers. Read this: The movie is based on Wonder by RJ Palacio. This is a great book to read before (or after) watching the movie. For additional reading about bullying try Real Friends by Shannon Hale or I Walk with Vanessa: A Story about a Simple Act of Kindness by Kerascoet.

Synopsis: Famous race car, Lightning McQueen, gets lost on his way to the big race and ends up in the small town of Radiator Springs. His first instinct is to get out of town as soon as possible but the longer he stays, the less he wants to leave. This movie has a great message about friendship and slowing down and appreciating what is important in life. (Rated G)
Synopsis: Alex the lion is the most popular animal attraction at the New York City’s Central Park Zoo. Alex and his friends, Claudia, Melman, and Marty, end up on the remote island of Madagascar where they are no longer served daily meals. Alex’s carnivore instincts make his friends, a giraffe, a hippo, and a zebra, seem appetizing. He must learn to manage his instincts while confronted with an island full of eccentric lemurs. This movie is silly and fun for kids while still being humorous for adults as well. (Rated PG)
Do that: Set up your very own carwash. This can be a water table with dish soap and sponges for the kids to wash their matchbox cars, a drive through car wash for bikes and trikes on the driveway, or get the kids involved and wash the family vehicles. Snack on this: Your race car drivers will want to enjoy some Cars themed snacks. Make stoplights using graham crackers. Spread frosting on the cracker and add a red, yellow, and green chocolate covered candy to make a traffic light. Other ideas could include “tires” (chocolate donuts) “tractor wheels” (Oreo cookies), or “Mack” and cheese. Go there: Take the family go-kart racing, attend a local “touch-a-truck event”, or go to a classic car show. Create that: Create your own race car using a toilet paper tube. Cover the tube in construction paper then add construction paper wheels, stickers, or decorate any way you would like. Read this: Fans of Cars will enjoy reading If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen or My Truck is Stuck by Kevin Lewis. There are also several Cars themed books available for more stories.
Do that: Have a dance party. The characters in the movie love to dance so why not get your place some music and “Move it! Move it” in the living room. Snack on this: Since the four friends land on a tropical island try serving fresh fruits such as pineapple, bananas, and oranges. You could also purchase pre-packaged Melman inspired zebra cakes. Create that: Draw a circle on a yellow piece of construction paper. Add a lion face to the circle. Use a plastic fork dipped in orange paint to create a lion’s mane around the circle. Go there: After watching the movie, head to the Houston Zoo to see some real life hippos, zebras, lions, and giraffes. Read this: Julius: Fun Facts About Lions for Kids by James Randall Miller is a book full of fun facts for kids interested in learning more about lions. For Kids who are intrigued by zebras check out How the Zebra Got Its Stripes by Ron Fontes.

Snack on this: For a Charlotte’s Web themed snack serve “farm fresh” foods such as watermelon, corn on the cob, or apple pie.
WEB Synopsis: After learning her friend, Wilbur the pig, days are numbered, Charlotte the spider comes up with a plan to save him. This movie is based on the 1952 book Charlotte’s Web by EB White and is a tale of unlikely friends and is a classic adults and kids will both enjoy. (Rated G) Do that: What words would you use to describe yourself? What about your other family members? Use a paper plate and attach eight legs (use construction paper) to create a spider. Write your name on the “body” of the spider (paper plate) and write one descriptive word on each spider leg.
Create that: Make a spider web craft - Cut the center out of a paper plate. Use a hole punch to cut holes around the remaining edge of the plate. Cut a piece of yarn and tie a knot at the end. Have the kids weave the yarn through random holes on the plate to make a spider web. To make it easier to weave, wrap a small piece of tape on the tip of the yarn. Go there: Take a trip to a local petting zoo or farm where you can see real animals. Maybe you will even find a spider hiding somewhere. Read this: A read aloud of the classic book Charlotte’s Web by EB White is a must before watching the movie. If you would like to try some spider themed picture books check out Be Nice to Spiders by Maragret Bloy Graham and I’m Trying to Love Spiders by Bethany Barton.

WALL-E Synopsis: Wall-E (Waste Allocation Load Earth-class) is the last robot left on Earth. He spends his days tidying the planet one piece of garbage at a time. But after 700 years he is very lonely. When a probe named EVE arrives he falls in love and follows her across the galaxy. This movie is heart warming and has a good message about taking care of our planet. (Rated G) Do that: Walk the neighborhood and clean up trash that you find in common areas. Discuss what items can be recycled and why it is important. Consider planting a tree, plant, flowers, or taking care of a garden in your yard. Snack on this: For a healthy snack try foods that come from the Earth. Choose fruits and veggies that your kids love and are more likely to enjoy. Create that: Make your own robot. Gather empty cereal boxes, paper towel or toilet paper rolls, and any other found items to design and build your own robot. What jobs would your robot do? Go there: Visit the local Houston Arboretum or Botanical Gardens and spend some time in nature. For a fun activity, go on a scavenger hunt. Many scavenger hunt ideas are available online. (homemadeheather.com has 20 great ones) Read this: For books for young kids try What a Waste:Trash, Recycling, and Protecting our Planet by Jess French or The Adventures of an Aluminum Can: A Story About Recycling by Alison Inches. Try In a Nutshell by Joseph Anthony for a book about the importance of plants for our environment.
Synopsis: Jane and Michael, children of the wealthy and uptight Banks family are assigned a new nanny. They are thrilled to see she is full of magical surprises. The movie follows their adventures with their nanny, Mary Poppins. The kids try to pass on some of the things they learn to their distracted parents. (1964 Rated G and 2018 Rated PG) Do that: Chalk the walk. Use sidewalk chalk to create Mary Poppins inspired art. Snack on this: Just a spoonful of sugar cake pops. To make this fun snack you will need a cake mix, buttercream frosting, candy melts, sugar, and plastic spoons. Bake the cake as directed. Once it is cooled, break it up and mix in the buttercream frosting. Roll the mixture into small balls and freeze for 20 minutes. Melt candy coating according to package directions and carefully dip cake pops. Before the coating is dry, roll it in sugar. Place a dollop of candy coating on the plastic spoon and set cake pop on top. Place in the freezer until they are set. Create that: Umbrella craft. You will need a round coffee filter, washable markers, and construction paper. Lay the coffee filter flat and have your child color with markers. Use a spray bottle set to mist to wet down the coffee filter and allow it to dry. Once dry, fold in half and attach a piece of construction paper in the shape of a handle. Hang in the window so the sun can shine through. Go there: Go fly a kite. If weather allows, get outside and fly a kite. If the weather isn’t quite right,create and decorate your own kite inside. Read this: Mary Poppins the movie is based on a series of eight books by PL Travers. The first book in the series is titled Mary Poppins.
WATCH THIS: CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Synopsis: When hard times hit the town of Swallow Falls, its townspeople are stuck eating sardines for every meal. Local inventor, Flint Lockwood, develops a machine that can turn water into food and becomes the local hero when tasty meals start raining from the sky. But things get out of control and Flint and his friends have to save the town before it’s too late. This movie is funny and a joy to watch. It will make you hungry while imagining what food you would like to see fall from the sky. (Rated PG) Do that: Have the kids draw a picture of their own crazy weather report. What food will fall from the sky next? Take turns pretending to be the newscaster and giving their crazy weather report.
Snack on this: Make a batch of spaghetti and meatballs to enjoy before the movie. While you eat, discuss what food you would like best if it fell from the sky and what food you would least like to see. Create that: Playdough thunderstorm - For this activity you will need gray, blue, and white playdough and yellow pipe cleaners. Use the gray playdough to make rain clouds, the blue to make rain drops, and the white to make hail. You can use the yellow pipe cleaners to add lightning bolts. Let your child get creative and make their own thunderstorm. Go there: In the movie it snows ice cream. Take the family out for ice cream and imagine what it would be like if it snowed ice cream. What is your favorite flavor? Read this: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett and the sequel Pickles Over Pittsburgh are obvious choices before or after enjoying the movie which is inspired by these books. For kidfriendly books about weather check out A Year in the Wind by Hanna Konola or Tap Tap Boom Boom by Elizabeth Bluemie

6 key tips for parents to make surviving this holiday season easier 1. Plan Ahead
4. Put your children first
“It is imperative to create a plan ahead of time that includes when and where your children will be to avoid confusion and/or an argument,” says Plevy. The added challenges of the ongoing pandemic may require you and your ex to compromise especially if travel is involved. Dickerson adds “Your ex may not want you to travel during the holidays with the pandemic raging on in some parts of the country—but if the court order allows you to do so, it’s within your right.” Having a record of what is being said and agreed upon can avoid any future tension. To do this you should confirm the plan in writing via text message or email. Don’t forget to keep the kids updated on where they will go and when. This will prevent any anxiety they might feel from being kept out of the loop.
After a divorce or separation, there is often a mixture of negative emotions: sadness, anger and disappointment. Make sure you listen to your children’s concerns and let them know that it is okay to share these emotions, especially over the holidays. Plevy says letting them vent can be a big help.
2. Avoid a gifting competition One of the main issues divorced parents face during the holidays is wanting to give their children the better gift, according to Plevy. The competition can leave the parents in debt and feeling overwhelmed. “Don’t go into competition with the other parent. It doesn’t work. It hurts,” says Dickerson. It is important to keep in mind the other parent’s financial and housing situation while picking out presents. Sometimes, a parent will buy a dog for their child, even though they know the dog will not be able to live at the other parent’s house. As a rule of thumb, children prefer spending time with the parent over an outrageous present.
3. Behave like an adult
5. Create new traditions The holidays are a time for family traditions, but for divorced parents, it may be time to start some new ones. “This is a new chapter, this is a new family. It’s the time to start a new tradition with the children,” says Dickerson. New traditions can alleviate stress by helping children focus on the fun instead of the fact their parents aren’t together. You could go caroling, decorate the Christmas tree, or bake cookies for police officers and firefighters. Holiday traditions can make the season special for children, even during this difficult time.
6. Give yourself a gift Divorced or separated parents may feel sad, alone and stressed. Because of the established visitation schedule, a parent might find they have more free time when their child is with the other parent. Plevy advises while children are learning to adapt to an established structure, you should too. Use this time to do something special for yourself. By prioritizing your happiness, you will be more upbeat during the time you do get to spend with your children for the holidays.
Maintain your composure and remain civil and businesslike with the other parent. Remember your children still love them, and speaking rudely about the other parent in front of your children will upset them and exacerbate their stress. Make sure their aunts, uncles and grandparents follow the same rules. Children would rather feel at peace, so avoid the bickering. Otherwise, when they grow older, they might not want to visit.

Christmas is a holiday celebrated all around the world. The religious significance of the holiday is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, while the secular festivities involve a gift-giving character who brings presents and treats to good children. Holiday customs include decorations, music, and specialty foods. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting ways Christmas is celebrated all around the world.

IN INDIA
Christmas is celebrated on December 25th with church services for believers. A midnight service is very popular. People of all faiths decorate their homes and gardens with star-shaped paper lanterns and some set up nativity scenes. Father Christmas is the one who brings presents to children from a horse and cart. Special Christmas cakes and sweets such as newries and kulkuls are baked and open houses abound.
IN SWEDEN
St. Lucia’s day is celebrated on December 13th. St. Lucia was a Christian martyr from 304 AD known for secretly taking food to persecuted Christians in the catacombs of Rome. Today young girls dress in white dresses with a red sash, and wear a crown of lights to help Lucia find her way. Special Lucia Day buns called Lussekatts are served. Then on Christmas Eve a huge buffet known as julbord is eaten in courses. It begins with cold fish dishes and moves to cold meats, warm meat dishes and desserts. Glogg, a sweet mulled wine, and coffee are favorite drinks. Homes are decorated with straw to remind everyone that Jesus was born in a manger. Gifts are brought by small gnomes called jultomten.
IN MADAGASCAR
An island off the east coast of Africa, it is very warm at Christmas time. Still decorations include holly and “snow” though neither exist there. Santa is known as Dadabe Noely and only small gifts are exchanged. On Christmas day people everywhere, even strangers, greet one another with “Arahaba tratry ny Noely” which means Merry Christmas and then go to their families to eat dinners of chicken or pork with rice and a special cake. Another favorite Christmas food is the lychee, a fruit which is peeled and eaten with great enjoyment.
IN HONG KONG
Christians celebrate Christmas with homemade cards bearing original artwork. The scenes show the Holy family in Chinese settings. Poinsettias and nativity scenes are used for decorations. The Chinese alphabet is put on streamers and paper chains hang everywhere. Santa Claus is known as Lan Khong or Dun Che Lao Ren.
IN ZIMBABWE
Christmas day, known as Kisimusi begins with a church service. Then people visit all of their friends and family, and eat and exchange gifts all day long. Favorite meals are chicken with rice which is a special treat. Often large speakers are put into the streets and music is played loudly. People wear their best clothes and homes are decorated with ivy draped around the top of the rooms. Christmas cards may have wild animals on them and small gifts are given to children on Christmas morning.
IN NEW ZEALAND
Christmas also falls in the hot summer months. Families are often celebrating their summer holidays by camping or staying at the beach. There are parades and Christmas trees. The Christmas meal is barbecued meats or seafood. Desserts such as hot fruit pudding or meringues are served. Pavlova is a favorite dessert. Presents are opened on Christmas day before the special lunch.
IN ETHIOPIA
IN RUSSIA
Christmas is celebrated by the Orthodox Church. Once banned by the communist regime, Christmas is again celebrated with special church services, and wonderful meat and cabbage pies called pirogi and meat dumplings known as pelmeni. A porridge, kutya, is served along with honey and poppy seeds to bring happiness, success and peace. Children carry a star and go house to house in the cold winter snows singing carols and receiving sweets. Children love to hear about the ways other children celebrate. Why not share some of this information in your holiday discussions? You may even want to include some of the foods or traditions in your own family festivities.

Christmas is celebrated by the Orthodox Church. It is held on January 7th, and called Ganna. People fast on January 6th then on the morning of the 7th they wear a traditional garment called a shamma. It is a thin white cotton toga-like outfit. The shamma is worn to a special service held in the circle-shaped church. Candles are held in a procession and communion is taken. At the time of Ganna men and boys play a game similar to hockey also known as ganna. Special foods eaten at this time of year are meat and vegetables called wat and flatbread known as injera. Children usually receive gifts of clothing.

Carol singing is the highlight of the festivities. Carolers sing at dawn of Christmas morning and are invited in for snacks. Taffy-making is also a favorite family activity. There is a prize for the best new Christmas carol written that year and it is added to the list of carols sung in future Christmas celebrations.

Swedish St. Lucia Buns Ingredients 1 cup milk ¼ t. saffron ½ cup butter 4 ½ cups flour 1 T. yeast granules ½ cup potato flour or flakes 1 ½ t. salt 1/3 cup sugar 3 large eggs (one separated) 1 t. vanilla Glaze 1 egg white + 1 T. water Pearl sugar Sultana raisins (golden) In a saucepan heat the milk and saffron. Remove from heat and add butter. Cool to lukewarm. In a bowl whisk yeast, flours, salt and sugar. Separate one egg and save the white. Pour milk over the dry ingredients, add two eggs plus the extra yolk. Mix well and knead until smoothe. Allow to rise one hour, deflate and cut into twelve pieces. Form dough into S shapes and let rise another 30 minutes. Apply glaze and bake at 375 degrees for 18-20 minutes
New Zealand Pavlova Ingredients 4 egg whites 1/8 t. cream of tartar 1 cup superfine sugar (or granulated that is made fine in food processor) 1 T. cornstarch 1 t. vanilla 1 cup sliced fruit (kiwi and/or berries) 1 ½ cup sweetened whipped cream ¼ cup miniature chocolate chips of other small candies Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking pan with parchment paper. Sprinkle cream of tartar over egg whites and beat until stiff. Whisk cornstarch and sugar. Combine two mixtures and fold in vanilla. Form mounds of meringue about 6” in diameter. Reduce heat in oven to 200 degrees and bake one hour. Turn oven off leaving meringue inside to cool. When cooled, fill each mound with whipped cream and top with fruit and candies. 20 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE December 2021 .
Indian Newries This sweet treat is a favorite during the Christmas season in India. Ingredients Dough 41/2 cups flour 3 T. butter (ghee) 1/1/2 cups milk Filling 1 ¾ cup semolina flour (coarse rice or wheat flour) 7/8 cup sugar ¼ cup raisins ¼ cup chopped cashews 3 cardamons 1 t. cinnamon 1 T. butter (ghee) Combine flour, butter and milk into a stiff dough. Refrigerate. Gently cook raisins and nuts in a small amount of butter and set aside. Use rest of butter to gently fry semolina until light brown. Add sugar and spices, add raisins and nuts. Mix. Roll out small pieces of dough into 2 inch rounds. Place a T. of filling in the middle, fold and seal the edges of the dough. Heat oil and fry until golden brown. Enjoy!!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Now that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine has been approved for emergency use in children ages 5 to 11, you may have questions.

Here are answers from affiliated physician Dr. Peter Jung, MD, co-founder and head of Blue Fish Pediatrics at Memorial City, in association with Children’s Memorial Hermann, and a member of the Memorial Hermann Health System Physicians Council.
Q. What are vaccine side effects for children? A. “So far there have been no major adverse events,” Dr. Jung says. “There have been some concerns about myocarditis—inflammation of the heart muscle—among teenagers, so that’s being closely monitored. No cases of myocarditis have been shown in the limited data that has been published thus far.”
Q. Why are eligible vaccine age groups divided as they are? A. Our immune system responds differently, depending on maturation and size. So, vaccination testing was tiered, starting with older persons. Then, researchers monitored side effects to determine the appropriate dose for each age group. Once vaccines were found to be safe for adults, clinical trials were launched for children. Q. How did the testing of children proceed? A. The first phase of a Pfizer vaccine study of 114 kids aged 5 to 11 focused on dosage, given the difference in sizes between most younger children and adults. Children were divided into three groups. One got the same first dose as adults, which is 30 micrograms (mcg). The second got 20 mcg and the third 10 mcg. “We wanted to see if we could give children a lower dose so we could minimize the risk of side effects without lowering efficacy,” Dr. Jung says. The lower dose worked, so later phases of the study gave 10 mcg to 2,268 kids aged 5 to 11. “A
Q. Will the vaccine affect a child’s puberty or fertility? A. No. “Biologically that would be implausible and there has been no safety signal indicating that it could happen,” he says. A year of data on adults has shown no harm to fertility and pregnancy. Many women have become pregnant and delivered healthy babies. As for teens, there have been zero signs that menstrual cycles or fertility are harmed. Q. Even after the positive studies, won’t some people still resist getting their children vaccinated? A. Some parents are waiting for a large group of children to get the vaccine first before they commit to a vaccine for their child. “We’ve already given out nearly 400 million doses nationwide to people of all ages,” Dr. Jung says. And nearly half (48 percent) of parents of vaccineeligible children ages 12 to 17 now say their child has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Pediatrician “The benefits of the vaccine make it all the more important to get it, especially during a global pandemic.” Q. Do you plan to vaccinate your own children? Dr. Jung’s three teenage children were vaccinated as soon as they qualified. “If I had younger children I also would get them vaccinated as soon as their age group is approved,” he says. “The risk benefit ratio is clear to me as a pediatrician: Vaccinating my children expediently was the safest thing for their wellbeing and for the good of society.” Q. Until all age groups of children are vaccinated, what do you advise? A. Until vaccines are widely distributed to children, parents can take measures to be careful and reduce risks, Dr. Jung says. These include encouraging masks and avoiding crowded indoor spaces. “As more vaccines get rolled out there’s a light at the end of the tunnel,” he says. “But it’s important to stay safe until vaccines are readily available for everyone and ensure that children cross the finish line with their families, safe and healthy.”

The first and most important relationship we have in our lives is the one with our parents. Children learn how to love, play, interact, and resolve conflict through the bond they form with their mom and dad. From the moment a child is born, they want their parents' love and attention and it helps form their confidence and identity develop as they recieve it. As they mature, the bond strengthens through shared experiences and by spending quality time together. Here are some easy ways to strengthen the parentchild bond.
Play together The simplest way to bond with your child is to spend time playing with them. Play comes naturally to children and is a great way to spend quality time with them. Play teaches them life skills such as how to share, resolve conflict, and how to follow rules. It is also a great way to bond with your child. By playing peek-a-boo, tossing a ball in the backyard, playing house, or making crafts, you are bonding with your child because you are sharing in their joy of those activities. “My son would always open up when we played catch. We had some great conversations playing together.” says Angela Leever, mom of three. Playtime gives your child a safe place to share their feelings and express worries. By spending time doing what they enjoy, you are showing them they are important and you are there for them.
Find a mutual interest What is your child interested in? If your child enjoys reading, create a two person book club and discuss the books as you read. If your child loves football, make game night a family event and cheer on your team. If your child is interested in dinosaurs, visit a museum. Since some of my lifelong friends grew from playing sports or participating in activities together, the same can be assumed when we are talking about parentchild bonding. If you truly enjoy activities together, a stronger bond will naturally form. “When they show interest in a sport, music, games, hobby, or even a TV show, I will find free time to do it together.” says Michelle Lyons, mom of three. “I have found that while they are doing something they enjoy they are more likely to talk about other things in their life".
Tell them you love them & why It is likely your children know you love them but how often do you tell them? Saying I love you to your child has powerfully positive effects for your child. “My kids and I have something we do in the car.” says Pricella Edwords. “I reach back and lightly squeeze their legs three times which means "I love you'. They know and will often say 'I love you, too, mom". Try not just saying you love them, but tell them why. "I love you because you are so fun to be around." Or, "I love yu because you care about others." Words are powerful tools to give our kids the self confidence they need to face the world and they are a great way to bond with your child.
Similarly, snuggling, hugs, kisses, pats on the back, or even tickling and wrestling give your child the physical affection and bonding they crave from their parents and creates a strong bond.
Make them a priority Put down your phone and talk to your child. Show them that they are your number one priority. If you have a task that needs to be done, ask them to let you finish it and when it’s complete, give your child your full attention. “We read together before bed long after the story book years.” says Amy Cameron, mom of three. “Books spark discussion and debate and it’s an experience they will have forever.” If you have multiple children, it can be hard to spend oneon-one time with them. Set aside time to go on a “date” with each of your children so you can connect and checkin with what they have going on. Ask them open-ended questions and then listen to the answers. When you commit to making your child a priority, they will feel important and it will help to strengthen your relationship.
Create a helper For the busy parent, finding the time to make quality moments is a daunting task in addition to all your other responsibilities.. To ease this try incorporating them into your daily tasks. While you are cooking dinner, doing dishes, or folding laundry, ask your child to help and start up a conversation. Some kids may bond with their parents over fixing the car, painting, gardening, or any household task. Not only are you creating a great opportunity to spend time together but you are teaching them life skills and a good work ethic. Amy Siebert, mom of two, suggests talking to your kids while you are in the car. “We spend a lot of time driving between activities. That’s where our best conversations happen.” Mom of three, Carrie Miller says “Our most meaningful conversations happen before bedtime. It’s always worth the extra time, even when I’m tired from a long day.”
Love them no matter what One of the best ways to build a healthy bond with your child is to let them know you will love them no matter what. You communicate this by listening to their problems, offering advice when appropriate and then respecting their decisions, even if it will have negative consequences. If your child makes a mistake, let them know you are there to love and support them through the challenges that they may face. “I’m vulnerable with my children and tell them when I mess up and apologize when I do.” says Sarah Clark, mom of two. “I ask them to do the same for me. This authenticity creates a closer bond because they understand I’m not just an authoritarian parent figure.” Everyone needs to know they have someone in their corner, especially on the bad days. Barb Shapiro, mom of six, says “Validate their feelings and truly listen when they talk. This let’s them know how important they are to me and it’s not hard to do.”

amping and hiking look a lot different for us now then before we had kids. Adding kids to the mix definitely takes more work, but it makes for such good memories! If you are heading out this winter break, keep these tips in mind!
1. keep expectations real Just like at home, some days are great, and some days are hard. It definitely isn’t always easy, but managing our expectations and expecting the unexpected has helped with some of the stress that comes from adventuring with small children.
2. go with the flow
We’ve learned to let go of what we think our camping trip or hike “should” look like and try to just go with the flow. If you have young toddlers and babies like we do and are thinking of taking them out exploring with you, I highly suggest doing it! Just remember to pack the snacks - and then more snacks!! You can never seem to have enough.
3. bring home with you
When we are camping, I like to bring familiar items from home to help them settle at night when it’s time for bed. I don’t like to get crazy packing a ton of things, so one or two is enough for us. Plus, they love having a few of their toys to play with in the dirt. It’s way better than a backyard sandbox!
4. throw out routines
I can’t stick to normal routines for bedtime and naps. When I try to force them, it usually ends in tears for everyone. So, naps end up being at random times, and bedtime is usually later than it is at home. I’ve found that going with the flow of the day and letting them play adds to the experience for them and us. They usually sleep better and stay asleep through the night.

Entertain them & engage them in their surroundings! Help them learn to appreciate what is around them, because little nature lovers turn into big nature lovers. Keeping hiking fun for them will help make them excited to go the next time because for them it really is a big adventure no matter where you are.
7. trusty backpack is a must We love having different options of kid carriers to go on hikes with our kids. Some days they want to walk on their own and pick up every rock and clump of dirt they see. Other days they want to be carried the whole way. And some days it’s a combination. Having options to comfortably carry them on hikes has been huge, so we can explore all the trails around us.
8. start out with short hikes
Also remember to take breaks and play! It’s not how fast you can go or how many miles you can log, it’s more important that they have fun. Don't worry about the destination. Try to make it a good experience for them. Even if that means stopping at every river to let them throw rocks in it. The random stops have been some of the most memorable on the trails.
Even though our kids may not remember these moments outdoors, we always will. We love giving our kids as many opportunities as we can to run wild and let their imaginations be free. They won’t be this little for long, so we are making the most out of this season of life. So, bring your kids on your next adventure and have fun seeing some of your favorite places (or somewhere new) through their eyes.
