Young Philanthropists: US Champions in Action!

to change the world! In H4H's 15-‐year history, so many young people Young people have the power have helped to support our operations with so many incredible fundraisers and altruistic actions. It’s the power of people like Charlie who at 13 years old said, "it is a no brainer”, to donate all of his Bar gifts, enough to buy the H4H Center in Harare, Zimbabwe. H4H is able to thrive because of kids Mitzvah like those at Springs School Club who made and sold a calendar, Sam, Max, the Socks-‐from-‐Jocks kids in CA who raised thousands of pairs of sneakers, uniforms and balls, Chaffey College, the Joshes, southern Bryce, Ethan, Andrew, Talia, Jordon, Kelly, Jamie, and so many more other young philanthropists. Ethan a personal letter of congratulations from NBA Legend Bob Lanier for doing his part in for received supporting H4H and kids in Africa at his Bar Mitzvah! For 2 years in a row, Josh has rallied friends, family and businesses to support his 3-‐on-‐3 H4H tournament, had 150 people attend, filled the H4H van full of sneakers, balls and uniforms, and raised the money to get it all across the planet to the kids in Africa. You all are the essence of H4H and are helping keep the hope alive every day!

TREE OF LIFE | THE H4H STORY Thanks to graphic artist Monica Rief, we can now tell our Hoops 4 Hope story through an African inspired graphic, the H4H Tree of Life. What distinguishes the H4H tree? The leaves, flowers, and fruits = kids, success, fun! The supporting branches = MVPs/coaches/all stars; the real change agents on the ground who are hard working, loyal, and our reliable role models. The trunk = directors, supporters, donors, corporate organizations, and research; with whom we could not function without. The tree is grounded by a solid, organic foundation of nutrients; our curriculum and training methods, our longevity in the nonprofit marketplace, our community and global network, and friendships. What does it take to get the tree growing? The sun= knowledge, energy, encouragement, enthusiasm, motivation, and the media; elements that make H4H stronger. The wind = the natural elements/outside forces that come and go; politics, gender inequality, corruption, crime, HIV/Aids, poverty, and drugs. The rain = those things which nurture the tree; support, sneakers, balls, uniforms, sneakers, and necessary funding. As in the splendor of nature, the H4H story is cyclical, from kids to coaches to community. Our colors are vibrant and communicate the energy of the children, healthy lifestyles, and positive attitudes. May the H4H Tree of Life continue to thrive for many years to come! QUOTE OF THE MONTH "In terms of the H4H material, we always credit you when we talk about the program design we use. The materials that you gave us have become invaluable tools that we still use and we think that there is still a lot of room for growth for both of us. I am glad to hear that we can find ways for us to work together. I really want us to find ways for you to provide more capacity to our team and we have no problem in giving you all the material in Portuguese.

GIRLS SOCCER AT S4H | BEST OF THE BEST!

Soccer 4 Hope continues to be a leader in providing sustainable and innovative programs for the empowerment and upliftment of female youth in disadvantaged communities through soccer based education, health, and skills for life programs. On October 17th, our Soccer 4 Hope Programs held their annual “Best of the Best” event in Cape Town at the Luzuko Primary School in Gugulethu. The event was comprised of top schools in our league, such as Mpendulo Primary, Ikhusi Primary, Hlengisa Primary, and Lwazi Primary. Other schools in attendance were Noxolo Primary, Injongo Primary, Sigcawu, and Nobantu Primary. Festivities began with a march from the police station, a player briefing, heated matches, then onto prize giving and entertainment, courtesy of the Majorettes and a local dance group. For the first time in our event’s history, we had the South Africa Police fully involved, supporting us and acting as motivational speakers. From teachers to the Western Cape Youth Peer Education Association, we received amazing support for our efforts in peer education and event delivery. We also received some notable local press and media coverage and worked hard to showcase our girls in action. Congratulations to the girls of Hlengisa Primary, the Soccer 4 Hope Champions of the day!

HOOPS 4 HOPE November 2009 CAPE TOWN TEAM PROFILE: KARL VOYSEY | WRITTEN BY ALEXANDRA GRATEREAU This piece is an editorial on Hoops 4 Hope’s Program Manager Karl Voysey. While interning at Hoops 4 Hope in Cape Town, South Africa this past summer, I had the great opportunity to work with Karl. I remember the first time I met Karl. I was filled with excitement to FINALLY be in Cape Town and to be meeting my colleagues. The first thing that struck me the most about Karl, was how calm and collected he was, even though the organization had so much going on. He seemed very committed to his job and above all passionate for the communities that H4H and S4H supported. Little did I know that this commitment, this enthusiasm, and satisfaction for working with H4H and S4H as well as the youth in the community were much deeper in Karl than I expected. Throughout the few weeks that I lived in Cape Town, and worked with the non-profit, Karl went out of his way if it meant that it would make the organization move forward in the right direction. More than just a Program Manager that sat as his desk and dealt with the paper work and the behind the scenes of H4H and S4H, Mr. Voysey drove my fellow All-Stars to their particular communities far out in the outskirts of Cape Town, so they could conduct their Like Skills curriculum, at the various schools and any other meetings that involved the children.

During day long events such as the trainings for the MVP’s, Karl picked up the volunteers and some of the All-Stars to transport them to the event and then would rush to the nearest Supermarket to purchase the tons of food needed to prepare breakfast, lunch, and snacks, for a crowd of about 80 to 100 young and hungry teenagers. As if that was not enough, what blew me away the most was Karl’s attitude. He did not mind being the driver of the volunteers and even picking us up at our apartments in the mornings and dropping us off in the afternoons. He was always receptive when it came to helping out in the container, where all the donated shoes are kept and organized, and at the same time running in and out of meetings with members of other organizations with the hopes of creating lasting partnerships and future donors. I will never forget the time when Karl was mugged and his laptop and phone were stolen. If something like that would have happened to me I would have been devastated and worse-- super stressed due to all the documents lost. Instead of getting angry at the situation, Karl was very positive and maintained a very clear mind throughout those first weeks after the mugging. He borrowed another laptop and instantly emailed all of his contacts asking to please email him any document that he had emailed to them within the past year. Everyone was glad to help and soon Karl had most of his work back in the new laptop. I have learned a great deal from Karl. His self control and ability to stay calm in any situation is admirable. What would H4H and S4H do without Karl? He is a central piece to the organization as well as an immense part of the H4H and S4H family.
