“Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can. It speaks to people in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where there was once despair. It is an instrument for peace, even more powerful than governments. It breaks down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all kinds of discrimination. The heroes sport creates are examples of this power. They are valiant, not only on the playing field but also in the community, spreading hope and inspiration to the world.” — Nelson Mandela

MISSION: Hoops 4 Hope (H4H) supports youth and community development in South Africa and Zimbabwe by combining the joy of playing basketball with an effective HIV/AIDS– prevention and life-skills curriculum. Since 1995, Hoops 4 Hope (H4H) has helped thousands of children face the extraordinary challenges of growing up in communities plagued by poverty, HIV/AIDS, and the legacy of apartheid. H4H provides them with the basic tools they need to play team sports, as well as positive role models from within their communities.

Why Basketball? From playgrounds across the United States, Europe, and Asia, to the rural Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe and the townships in South Africa, there is basketball. It’s truly a global game that brings people together. Organized sports encourage more than healthy competition; they help erase racial boundaries by uniting children from different backgrounds. also foster vital personal relationships between coaches and players. This trusting relationship allows for an open and honest discussion of sensitive topics. Hoops 4 Hope uses sport as a vehicle for social and personal change. In order to play basketball on a H4H team, every child must successfully complete the Skills 4 Life curriculum. The Skills 4 Life curriculum provides young adults with the facts about HIV, and a safe forum to discuss important issues. H4H provides accurate information presented in a way that adolescents and young adults can understand . Helping young people avoid behaviors that place them at risk, is currently the best means of fighting the spread of this deadly virus.

The Need Families have been devastated by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the most innocent and vulnerable victims have been the children. Many are orphaned or simply don’t have a mentor or positive role model to guide them.

SKILLS 4 LIFE CURRICULUM • Combines best expert knowledge of HIV/AIDS with community and cultural realities. • Follows the guidelines of Rutanang, a project of the South African Departments of Health and the Harvard School of Public Health. • Creates an ideal learning environment where peer educators deliver critical information in a fun and engaging way. • Serves as an effective and replicable HIV-prevention model. • Teaches practical skills. • Conducts focus groups to evaluate the program’s effectiveness and develop curriculum.

The Challenges: H4H Peer Education Model H4H “all-stars” coordinate and support volunteer coaches or “MVPs”. These coaches create safe environments and act as agents of change within their communities. All-stars and MVPs have the unique opportunity to discuss important and sensitive topics with youngsters. The relationship between coach and player is vital to the success of the Skills 4 Life curriculum which employs games, role-play and group discussions to relate its message. The Hoops 4 Hope provides a cost-effective model that is sustained through continued community involvement, and ownership.

BATTLING THE HIV EPIDEMIC There are few causes more important in the world today than fighting the spread of AIDS. We must educate our children in order to stop this pandemic, and effective HIV-prevention programs must be scaled up dramatically. The global AIDS epidemic has hit Zimbabwe and South Africa especially hard. • 1/4 of all adults in Zimbabwe are HIV positive • Life expectancy has fallen from the age of 65 in 1990 to 40 in 2006 in Zimabwe • 1 in 5 Zimbabwean children are now orphaned. • 1 in 5 South Africans are infected. • Life expectancy in South Africa is 43.

THE SOLUTION–Life Skills Through Basketball Every year, Hoops 4 Hope gives 10,000 young people in Zimbabwe and South Africa a better chance at beating the odds in communities plagued by poverty, violence, crime, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1995 to provide athletic equipment to disadvantaged communities, H4H quickly recognized its unique potential to reach large numbers of young people with information that could quite literally save their lives. By combining the joy of basketball with effective, research-based education, H4H gives African children a fighting chance. H4H targets 10 to 18 year olds—an especially high-risk population. Through year-round, community-based sports programs, H4H works with young people on a regular basis over an extended period of time, thus increasing the likelihood that H4H will change the course of their lives. The Skills 4 Life curriculum is an integral part of all basketball practices, games, and tournaments. Coaches lead their players through a variety of activities designed to teach youngsters in a fun and effective way.

Hoops 4 Hope has become a major force in southern Africa’s fight against HIV/AIDS for several key reasons: • By developing long-term relationships with communities as a whole, H4H becomes part of the local culture, and H4H staff members become trusted community leaders. • H4H acknowledges that the best way to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS is to change the attitudes and behaviors of at-risk youth. • H4H provides accurate information geared toward encouraging young adults to form healthy relationships and make responsible choices. • H4H delivers programs that are highly cost effective. In 2006, H4H served over 10,000 children with a modest budget of $150,000. With additional funds, H4H will reach thousands more.
