INTRODUCING THE MAYOR

erry and Bebi Forbes Crisp arrived in Yateley in 1978 with Serena, two, and newly born Charmaine. Davinia joined the Crispies in 1982 to complete the clan. Gerry's career was mainly in sales and marketing before spending seven years in church related ministries. This followed with a time in financial services as an Associate Partner with Rothschilds at Yateley Hall. Following a prolonged illness, Gerry took things a little easier for a while and delivered mail to many of our residents, before embarking on his own book and gift business, finishing with his retirement in 2011. Last year Gerry at the age of 63 ran the London Marathon to raise £2000 for Mencap in order to purchase two specialized disability bicycles. Gerry has served our community

as a councillor for Yateley from 2011. He has since been very active in seeking to establish a dedicated youth centre, which will also offer training courses for our unemployed youth and a Teen Coffee Shop with a Chillout Zone in the evening. In the daytime this will double up as a café on the Green. Both schemes have recently received planning permission from Hart DC and will hopefully open next year. Gerry is also looking to introduce a "Pride of Yateley Awards" night, in order to recognise our dedicated community volunteers, who give so freely of their time and who are in effect the heartbeat of our town, as they make acts of selfless service over many years. As our newly elected Mayor, Gerry under his "Mayor Project" is looking forward to meeting up with

all our local organisations, schools and businesses (over 200) in order to develop stronger community relationships. As Gerry is also the delegated Councillor for Youth, he has chosen "Vision for Youth" as the Mayor's Charity for 2013/2014.

YATELEY IN CONTEXT Buildings on Reading Road

he parish of Yateley is in the district of Hart in the north-east of the county of Hampshire. Immediately to the north is Berkshire. The parish includes Yateley itself and the areas of Darby Green, Frogmore and part of Blackwater, as well as the greater part of Blackbushe Airport. It has a population of around 20,500. The townscape consists of a mixture of old and new

developments and during the last 30 years has expanded dramatically, although it has managed to retain much of its former rural character. In fact, although a town in name - it acquired its town council in January 1975 - it still has the feel of a large village. Or rather a number of villages, each one with its own village green. Yateley Green and Frogmore Green are, respectively, the centre of their parts of the community with recreation facilities to match. Church End Green, located between the two, is a more traditional centre with the historic church of St Peter’s nearby. Darby Green is also an important recreation area. There are a number of substantial, architecturally significant houses in the town, mostly hidden from view behind

trees and hedges. It retains its common, with its internationally important heathland. It sits in the valley of the Blackwater river which at this point is riddled with lakes formed from gravel extraction some of which now constitute important fisheries. Despite its continued rural feel, there is very little land left in Yateley that could be developed. Nevertheless, a parcel of land north of Reading Road near Swan Lake was recently released for development and Swan Lake View is due to be completed in the second half of 2013. As part of the development, some land has been handed into the care of Yateley Town Council to create the first allotment site in the parish for many years. There will also be leisure walkways for the public around Swan Lake.

A TALE OF THREE GREENS

ateley had a stone church in Saxon times, and became one of the largest settlements in North-east Hampshire in the Middle Ages. The parish then included the huge but sparsely populated areas of Hawley and Cove. It was part of the Manor and Hundred of Crondall, which provided financial support for the monks of the Old Monastery at Winchester. At the Reformation, the Manor was given to the Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral, and, apart for a short period during the Civil War, remained in the hands of the church until the manorial system ended in the twentieth century. During the Middle Ages, Yateley’s settlement pattern, with its clear distinction between the cultivated land and the uncultivated heathland common land, 

reached its present form. Smaller houses were concentrated round the three Greens that are now Conservation Areas, with larger farmhouses scattered across the parish. Yateley people held their farmland from the lord of the manor, and could exercise various common rights and graze animals on the common. Some Yateley people still have these rights today. By the seventeenth century Hall Place, Frogmore Park, Hilfield, Yateley Lodge, Yateley Hall, and Monteagle House were residences suitable for gentlemen. Hall Place (now Yateley Manor school) was home to Sir Richard Ryves, an early Director of the East India Company. Such men, who were often lawyers or had business interests in the East India Company, commuted to London using the Exeter Road (now the A30), which crosses Yateley Common. At 34 miles, the journey to London was half a day’s horse ride - conveniently close, but far enough away to avoid the recurrent plague, which killed about a third of Yateley people in 1349. Travel could be dangerous. Bagshot Heath became notorious for highwaymen. At one period, travellers from the west country passed through Yateley village and on into Sandhurst to take a safer more, northerly route to London. Below these wealthy families with their London connections were people whose business interests were more local, such as the farmers and tradesmen like malsters and brewers, who intermarried to strengthen their business ties. By this time Yateley land was used for fattening cattle and growing barley for making beer. The poorer people were generally agricultural labourers, or were servants at the houses of the better off. At the bottom of the 

social scale were the travellers, who squatted in tents on Yateley Common. Yateley continued in much the same state until the nineteenth century, when it began to change more rapidly. The Royal Military College came to Sandhurst in 1812. The College staff and retired army officers began to settle in Yateley, starting off its “suburbanisation”. In the nineteenth century new development was mainly in Frogmore and Darby Green, nearest to Camberley and to Blackwater railway station. Development spread westwards across Yateley in the period up to the Second World War with large houses on spacious plots for upper middle class incomers, many of whom had entries in ‘Who’s Who’, the local people providing them with services they needed. This development was scattered, with pleasant open fields between the houses. Yateley was a place for people in comfortable circumstances. War left a legacy of derelict land that invited redevelopment. The new sewerage system now had surplus capacity, making Yateley an obvious place to build houses. Yateley lay just beyond the London Green Belt - development pressure was intense. Yateley was changing fast, and its middle class residents saw what was happening and many sold their houses for development. During the 1960s and 1970s Yateley expanded faster than most designated ‘New Towns’ such as Bracknell. Unlike the New Towns, Yateley expanded without proper planning or infrastructure. Only when the available land became exhausted, did the rate of development slow down.

SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

ateley is a town of parades: little groups of shops, almost all strung out along the main through-road from Reading to the A30. Each parade has its own parking. The impression is of a series of villages that, when put together, offer a surprisingly wide variety of services. Here are all the facilities of a busy town with the calm and spaciousness of a village.

CHIEF AMONG HOUSES

ateley’s finest house, Yateley Hall, is located, appropriately enough, on Hall Lane, but the casual passer-by could be forgiven for missing it. Like many of the town’s fine houses, it is hidden by trees. If you were to turn off Firgrove Road on the road called Calcott Park, however, the house’s full glory reveals itself. The house appears from the exterior to date substantially from the 17th-18th centuries with a good deal of 19th century remodelling. Evidence of a moat, however, which once surrounded the whole house, points back to at least the 14th century. Moats in the Middle Ages were usually built by relatively wealthy individuals chiefly as a means of protecting their stock at night. The moat here formed a 30 square metre plot which contained a farmhouse and adjacent land. The medieval timber-framed house is still hidden within the walls of the existing building which began to take shape in the 17th century. The new brick house built here would still have been surrounded by a moat which also encompassed small formal gardens. The house was occupied by a succession of wealthy London lawyers in the 18th century who extended the main building and

created new outbuildings. The moat was at this time mostly filled in, leaving the part to the east of the house to be fashioned into a mock canal whilst the front of the house was given an expansive parkland prospect. What had been known as “The Calcotts” was renamed “Yateley House”. In the 19th century it acquired the even grander title of “Yateley Hall”. The renowned architect Norman Shaw was engaged to make a number of alterations and there are features both inside and outside in his Queen Anne revival style. Of his work at the back of the house overlooking the canal, the local historian Dr Richard

Johnson has written that it is “a beautiful piece of architecture in its own right, the fine red brickwork rising out of the canal in a manner reminiscent of 17th century Dutch townscape painting”. The house continued to be occupied by wealthy individuals until the Second World War when the last occupant, Miss de Winton Corry, died. From the end of the Second World War to the 1980s, the house was used as a convent school. It was then acquired by a developer and turned tastefully into offices. The building is listed Grade II*, with the Palladian stable block separately listed Grade II.

FOR YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE

n 2010 an audit of youth provision in and around Yateley was completed and since then the Youth Development Officer has worked towards increasing provision, filling the gaps and sharing with other professionals the resources that already existed. Working alongside agencies and professionals from across the district and county, the development officer has ensured that Yateley and its surrounding areas is on the map and receiving its share of services. During this time Hampshire County Council cut its youth support services and this meant that any youth services in the area had to be tendered for by third parties. As the Town Council could not apply directly for funding, it supported and worked alongside Fruition Youth and EDYACT with their bid to be the provider of Hampshire County Council funded youth services. Yateley Town has also initiated its own project ‘Vision4Youth’

whose vision is to provide a permanent dedicated youth centre incorporating a training café. One of the Development Officer's aims was to initiate a way of information sharing between all parties and a Yateley Youth Forum was subsequently formed that meets every 6-8 weeks where professionals can catch up, share information and hear guest speakers. As a team of youth providers we have been able to hold events such as the Youth Village at the May Fayre and the young person’s summer scheme. The summer scheme will be repeated in 2013 and hopefully beyond (contact details below). More recently, the need has been highlighted to provide a similar service in respect of provision for older people. To this end, the development officer now includes this in her remit which now covers both ‘Youth’ and ‘Community’. This role will initially begin with an audit of provision, similar to that carried out for youth services, and

t sounds like the plot for a novel - but it’s true, and it explains the presence in Yateley of an extraordinary institution. In 1924 an orthopaedic nurse from Yateley called Jessie Brown received the honour of being called to Nepal to nurse the daughter of a Maharajah. Jessie continued to maintain contact with Princess Nani

over the next 10 years until the youngster died. Following this, Jessie returned to Yateley to nurse her ageing mother. But an idea had been planted in her mind. She had observed hand block printing in India and, with the help of a friend, Grace Finch, she established a workshop in the grounds of her house in Yateley to provide work in the craft for disabled girls. The workshop and hostel for eight girls opened in 1937. It had to be closed during the war, but was opened again in 1948. A new workshop was built in 1952 and a complex of bungalows for the residents in

Yateley Industries was now firmly established as as one of the preciously few sheltered workshops in the country. Men began to work there from the 1980s. Jessie Brown was awarded the MBE in 1952 for her foresight and dedication in founding Yateley Industries. The institution continues to thrive and is firmly embedded in the industrial landscape by working in partnership with other companies to produce finished packaging. Its wide range of activities includes assembling car components, organising mail-outs and producing printed T shirts and housewares from its screen printing department. There are 32 residents on site supported by volunteers.

IN OUR COMMON INTEREST Yateley Common and, inset, the Dartford Warbler

wned and Managed by Hampshire County Council, Yateley Common Country Park is made up of 476 acres of varied grasslands, ponds, woodlands and, most importantly, heathland. Yateley Common is protected by its status as part of the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area (SPA), and as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) designated for its unique range of specialised heathland wildlife. Heathlands may look wild and untouched but have been created and or maintained at least in part by man’s activities, such as grazing. If left unmanaged they would become entirely wooded with the loss of the important heathland habitat and associated species.

There are many misconceptions about common land: one is that it has always been owned by the people; in reality, it belonged to landlords, but was often left unused due to its poor quality soils. ‘Commoner rights’ were given to tenants living around the common and some local households retain such rights to this day. Until the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CRoW), most commons were not actually open to access by the public. Access is now granted to all commons under this act, but with this right of access come restrictions.

To help conserve ground nesting birds one such restriction is that walkers are asked to keep dogs on leads during the bird breeding season, 1st March – 31st July. This restriction does not apply, however, to bridleways. In order to conserve the birds please ensure your dogs stick to the bridleways between these dates. This is because the low-lying, warm and dry environment on Yateley Common, characterised by heathers, gorse and scattered trees, provides an ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife including three rare and threatened birds: the Dartford Warbler, Woodlark and Nightjar, all of which are on the European list of endangered species. These species nest on or near the ground and are therefore susceptible to disturbance. Horseriders and groups of walkers can also help conserve these rare birds by sticking to main tracks and bridleways. Adders, lizards, grasssnakes, slow worms and a variety of insects are also to be found, including a variety of dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies. Other bird species found on the common include Stonechats, Tree Pipits, Hobby and Kestrel. Red Kites are now also making the odd appearance in the sky. The common offers a range of recreational activities, including: angling in Wyndham’s Pool, cycling and horse riding on the large network of bridleways, dog walking or just enjoying the heathland landscape. COMING INTO LAND

n 1941, plans were drawn up for a military airfield to be constructed at Hartford Bridge Flats to the south west of Yateley. The site was an almost perfectly flat part of Yateley Common and on relatively high ground as well as having good main line rail connections and the nearby A30 trunkroad. It was officially opened in November 1942. Squadrons flying Tomahawks, Venturas, Mustangs and Spitfires were located here. The A30 had to be closed from dusk to dawn as a security measure, and was also closed whenever the north-south runway was in use. It was designated a Bomber Command diversion airfield and received many damaged aircraft and weather diversions throughout the war period. A fog dispersal system called FIDO was installed to help aircraft in poor weather conditions. It consisted of a piped burner system each side of the main runway down which petrol was pumped. When ignited, the flames heated the fog sufficiently to disperse it. Few other wartime airfields had such a system. The airfield was active during and following â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dâ&#x20AC;? Day in 1944. The name was changed from RAF

Hartfordbridge to RAF Blackbushe that year (since there was a Hartford Bridge in Norfolk and mail was going astray). After the war, the airfield was

briefly closed and then reopened to become one of the busiest charter airfields in the country at the time. It closed again in 1960 when a US Navy detachment, which had operated there, left and independent airlines moved to the newly constructed Gatwick. Later it became home to a collection of restored military aircraft. British Car Auctions bought it in 1985 both for holding auctions and operating their own fleet of company aircraft and helicopters. It is now owned by Blackbushe Airport Limited and accommodates two flying training schools and private aircraft as well as continuing to host British Car Auctions and the Blackbushe Sunday Market.

LAKES LIKE NO OTHERS

here are natural gravel and sand deposits along most of the River Blackwater River and this led to extensive extraction especially after the Second World War in order to meet demand for roads and houses. This is the origin of the numerous lakes along the river, at their most prolific between Yateley and Sandhurst. Most of the extraction ceased in the 1960s and the lakes have since been turned to leisure use, both water sports and fishing. The fisheries at Yateley are among the most famous in the country. This maze of lakes, owned by a variety of organisations, has fish stocks of carp, catfish, bream, tench, crucian carp and eels. of Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey, is maintained as an open space from the river source, near Aldershot in the south, northwards to Swallowfield and the confluence with the rivers Whitewater and Loddon. The 23-mile long Blackwater Valley Path runs

SPORT AND RECREATION

lthough technically a town, Yateley has the general appearance of a large village. Fortunately, it enjoys the advantages that both descriptions would suggest when it comes to opportunities for sport and recreation. In fact the town boasts no less than two substantial sports centres. The Yateley School complex on School Lane includes a wide range of facilities open to the public. Marketed under the ‘Yateleys’ banner, they include a 20m swimming pool available to the public outside of school hours and to certain groups at various times of the day, a sports hall, dance studio and gym. Frogmore Leisure Centre on Potley Hill Road offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor

facilities, including a 90 station gym, two dance studios (hosting ballet, jazz and over 60 fitness classes a week), a sports hall for badminton, trampolining and gymnastics, two squash courts, a sauna, sun beds and spray tan booth, an air-conditioned function room, treatment room, and floodlit artificial turf pitch. In the care of the Town Council on Yateley Green there are 2 allweather tennis courts with floodlighting and, next door, the bowling green. Cricket is played at Yateley Cricket Club’s ground in Sean Devereux Park on Chandlers Lane. Sharing the Yateley Cricket Club’s facilities is the very active hockey club. Also in the vicinity of Sean Devereux Park is the Blackwater Valley Golf Club, a 9 hole, 2,245

yard par 34 course which was awarded the highly acclaimed “Cooper-Heyman Cup” for landscape design. There are Football pitches at Yateley Green, Darby Green Playing Fields and Sean Devereux Park. Fishing is catered for not only at Yateley Lakes with their catches of carp, catfish, bream, trench and eels, but also on the River Blackwater and at Wyndham’s Pool in Yateley Common Country Park. For the younger members of the community, Yateley has three main playgrounds situated around the town that are well maintained, safe and fun for children aged below 8. They all have safety surfaces fitted and are enclosed by fences which exclude dogs.
