TRAVEL INSPIRATION

Here are our suggestions for top things to see and do in and around Neuchâtel. Treat yourself to a long weekend in this lovely town and feel its Mediterranean vibes.

Our suggestion for a perfect place to spend the long weekend: Hôtel Alpes et Lacs has a panoramic terrace and a great restaurant and is well located near the Neuchâtel main train station.

1 Day 1: Visit Chaumont See the city and its lake from up high: take the funicular up the local mountain, Chaumont. On a clear day you can see as far as Mont Blanc. For an even more spectacular view, climb up the panoramic tower at 1.200 m above sea level. Head to the locals’ favorite picnic spot on the Chaumont, called Pré-Louiset. With a bit of preparation, you can enjoy a local tradition known only to few out-of-towners: la torrée neuchateloise. This is a Neuchâtel sausage that is well wrapped in cabbage leaves and newspaper sheets and baked in the embers. To be eaten with potatoes also cooked in the fire. For kids there is a huge play area and the Topeka Ranch nearby offers horse or pony rides. Find out more infos and plan your trip: bit.ly/HelloChaumont

2 Day 2: Old Town of Neuchâtel Want to discover Neuchâtel from a completely unique perspective? Try this exciting tour and scavenger hunt themed ‘Neuchâtel during the Belle Epoque’ and be transported back in time in the most fun way possible. Go on a sensorial guided tour: this dynamic, interactive city tour takes you to several places related to the Belle Epoque: treats for your taste buds, an introduction to games of the period – and you can even board a real tram from the early 1900s! The scavenger hunt ‘Les Chenapans’ (‘The Rascals’) will send you across the town, looking for paintings inspired by the Belle Epoque. There’s treasure at the end of the trail! Find out more infos and plan your trip: bit.ly/HelloBelle-Epoque

3 Day 3: Hike among the vineyards The area around Neuchâtel, between Ligerz and Twann, is well known for its wine making tradition. Add some absolutely stunning landscapes and a day here won’t be enough. Here are our tips to experience the highlights: start in Ligerz, take the Vinifuni up to Prêles. Hike through the vineyards with a grandiose panorama of the hills, Lake Biel and the island of St. Peter, until you reach the entrance to the gorges of Douanne. Don’t miss the magnificent waterfall at the end of the trail. In Ligerz, Schafis and Twann, you’ll find numerous wineries and wine tasting cellars. Our recommendation: restaurant Zum alten Schweizer in Twann. Find out more infos and plan your trip: bit.ly/Hello3LakesWine

THE SCHILTHORN EXPERIENCE Stunning views, thrills and relaxation The Mürren – Schilthorn region is an autumn paradise for mountain lovers, sports fans and adventure seekers. There’s a via ferrata for those with a head for heights, James Bond’s footsteps to retrace and a children’s adventure playground to explore. And all this against a stunning Alpine backdrop starring the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Surrounded by more than 200 alpine peaks and embedded in a pristine mountain environment, Piz Gloria is located at 2,970m above sea level. The instantly recognizable summit building takes pride of place on the Schilthorn peak. Diners can watch the scenery glide by while enjoying a delicious table-served meal at the Piz Gloria Restaurant, which rotates around its own axis in 45 minutes.

Follow in the footsteps of Secret Agent 007 – James Bond Schilthorn was a pivotal film location for the iconic James Bond movie ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ (1969). The revolving restaurant served as arch-villain Blofeld’s headquarters

and was called Piz Gloria – a name it has kept to present day. Bond has left an original mark on the Schilthorn, from the 007 Burger, to the interactive exhibition and stunning panoramic cinema - fans will be thrilled.

THRILL – at Birg station THRILL stands for spine-tingling sensations, exploring the rugged mountain landscape and the ultimate mountain feeling. Nowhere is this experience more authentic than at the Birg station. Built as an extension of the spacious sun terrace, the Skyline Walk observation deck is suspended over the vertical abyss, with panoramic vistas and exhilarating views into the void. At the opposite end of the terrace is the entrance to the Thrill Walk,

which leads down into the perpendicular walls of the imposing rock massif.

Hike and CHILL – at Allmendhubel The 1,907-metre-high Allmendhubel is the perfect starting point for numerous hikes, among which the themed trails Northface Trail and Mountain View Trail warrant a special mention. At the Allmendhubel, the grownups can enjoy a delicious meal at the cosy panorama restaurant with its spacious sun terrace, while the little ones can let off steam in the Flower Park adventure playground. A gateway to the fascinating alpine environment, this expansive play meadow beckons with a wealth of interesting facts about the flora and fauna of the Alps.

Secure your future in Switzerland As a foreign resident in Switzerland, benefits paid will be significantly reduced because of missing years in your contributions.

Do you know what your income will be if you or your partner become disabled as a result of illness or accident? Many foreign residents to Switzerland do not realize that disability cover during the first few years is modest, particularly in the case of inability to earn resulting from illness. In these cases only the disability insurance and the pension fund would pay a pension. During the first year of employment the employer is only obliged to continue paying a salary for three weeks. For this reason several employers take out collective daily benefits insurance for their employees so that in the event of illness at least 80% of the salary will continue to be paid for two years. After that, newcomers are entitled to only a minimum disability pension and benefits from the pension fund. However, as several pension funds make their benefits dependent on the saved capital, this pension is usually not enough to cover ongoing costs.
