ENCHANTING SWISS WINE TRAILS DISCOVER THREE OFF-THE-BEATEN PATH TRAILS FOR WINE LOVERS

When it comes to wine, the regions of Valais and Vaud are without a doubt Switzerland’s biggest producers. You may not know it, but passionate wine makers and flourishing vineyards can be found throughout Switzerland, particularly in Ticino, but also in the German part of Switzerland. Here are our top picks for some off-the-beaten path, yet absolutely lovely wine trails. In the photo, Mendrisiotto Bike‘n Wine Photo credits: © Switzerland Tourism/ Giglio Pasqua 6

TRAVEL INSPIRATION

The regions of Fribourg and Thurgau are not widely known for their wine, yet they produce excellent, internationally renowned wines. Diversity is quite impressive when it comes to Swiss wine types and grape sorts. We can roughly say that the region of Vully/ Lake Murten produces mostly white wines (Chasselas type), while the cantons of Thurgau and Ticino are mostly focused on red wines (Pinot Noir in Thurgau and Merlot in Ticino).

1 Mont Vully – Lake Murten Wine Trail: Wines made from grapes grown on the northern shore of Lake Murten have international fame. Discover the stunning views over Lake Murten from the nearby Mont Vully, while exploring more about the region’s wine tradition. The varied circular trail starts at Môtier, on the shore of Lake Murten, and continues up to Praz. It traverses the vineyards on Mont Vully and leads to the tunnels of the former infantry fortifications cut into sandstone. Must see: the caves of La Lamberta: a 200-meter tunnel network excavated from the sandstone in 1916/17 during World War I.

bit.ly/HelloMurtenVineyards

2 Weinfelden Wine Trail: Between Zurich and Bodensee (Lake Konstanz) lies the canton of Thurgau, known more for its orchards and strawberries, than for its rich wine growing tradition, dating from Roman times. World-class wines are made in Thurgau and during this lovely 2h hike you will get to sample some of them. Take in the fabulous views over the Alps, enjoy the peaceful vineyards and sample local food and wine along the way. Must see: Bachtobel Castle and Estate. The castle dates from the 16th century and it is now the center of the estate producing some fine Thurgau wines.

bit.ly/HelloWeinfeldenVineyards

3 Mendrisiotto Bike’n Wine: Mendrisiotto is often called the ‘Tuscany of Switzerland’ and has a typical Ticinese charm, imbued with Italian flavor. This lovely bike tour will take you from the town of Balerna, across typical Mendrisiotto vineyards and then back again to Balerna. Your guide will arrange several tastings of typical Merlot wines from the region and you can also sample local foods. There are only 2 dates available for the tour this year, make sure you book your spot: 14 September and 26 October.

Grape Harvest Festivals September is dedicated to grape harvest festivals all over Switzerland. In the German part of Switzerland they are called ‘Lässet Suuntig’ or ‘Räbebeizli’. In the French part they are either ‘Fetes des Vendanges’ or ‘Fete des Vignerons’. Essentially they all mean the same thing, a smashing good time celebrating the grape harvest, good food and most of all, excellent wine. 8 - 9 September

27 – 29 September

Sagra del Borgo Mendrisio, Ticino

The town of Mendrisio and the surrounding area has more vineyards than anywhere else in the entire canton of Ticino and is renowned for its excellent food and wine. A ‘Sagra’ is a local festival held to celebrate a patron saint or the harvest, while also promoting good local food and wine.

bit.ly/HelloSagra2019 11 – 13 October

Grape harvest festival Cheyres, Fribourg

The high point of these festivities is undoubtedly the colourful and noisy parade of floats through the village, featuring brass bands and “guggenmusik“ groups. Once the procession is over, the local winemakers will perform the traditional first pressing of the grapes.

HEALTH INSURANCE IN EASY STEPS

Which health insurance is the right one for your needs? Provided by: Monika Courts, EGK – Gesundheitskasse Branch Manager

Health insurance is mandatory in Switzerland. Within 3 months of your arrival in Switzerland, you will be asked to provide proof that you have health insurance coverage. You therefore have 3 months to decide. Once you sign the contract, you will only be able to change your insurance provider once a year (November 30 of next year), provided you give one months’ notice.

Mandatory basic health insurance Mandatory basic health insurance provided by all health insurers covers exactly the same benefits. However, they differ greatly in terms of quality of service. The cost of the insurance is influenced by the amount of franchise deductible you are willing to pay. Do you often have health problems? Then you might want to go for a low franchise and a high insurance premium. In case something happens to you, your insurer will cover all costs above the franchise deductible. In addition to mandatory insurance, you will have to take into account supplementary insurance which might allow you access to a wider range of treatments, like complementary medicine, psychotherapy or even massage. 18

LIVING WELL

Before you carefully select your health insurance provider, here are some key things to consider: • Is there client service available in English? • How long will it take for hospitalization coverage to begin? What is the coverage limited to? • Is all prescribed medication covered up to 90% of the costs, or are there restrictions? • Are there restrictions on hospitalization outside the canton of residence? • What is covered whilst travelling abroad? • Are emergency ambulance costs covered? • Which costs are covered for dental care due to an accident? • Are extra charges likely to be incurred? If so, what are they? • What costs are included for spectacles and contact lenses?

• Is there a waiting period for special care, maternity or other? • What specific treatments does this policy exclude? The most suitable insurance solution for you is best found in a personal conversation, whether it concerns the appropriate form of basic insurance or supplementary insurance with which you want to get the best protection possible. If you are looking to better understand the Swiss health care system and select the best insurance for your needs, it is highly recommended to contact a professional insurance advisor. With 100 years of insurance experience, EGK – Gesundheitskasse is one of the most reliable health insurance companies in Switzerland.

GET CONNECTED WITH HEALTH INSURANCE ADVISORS: As branch office manager for EGKGesundheitskasse, Monika Courts looks back on many years of experience in the Swiss health insurance system. Lake Morat, Fribourg

Romainmôtier, Vaud

Thun, Bern

In 1746, the Swiss Confederates won a brilliant victory over Charles the Bold in Murten. According to the legend, a harbinger ran from Murten to Fribourg with the branch of a limetree in his hand to announce the Swiss victory. That event is commemorated every autumn with a race that attracts thousands of runners from all around the world.

Also known as ‘Les Sonnailles’, this is a traditional ‘desalpe’, but with (cow) bells on. The cow bell artisans will proudly display their work and you can choose your own. Be well aware that the cow bell is not just a simple bell, it is a symbol of seasonal change, held in high regard all over Switzerland. This is also a very good excuse to see the charming village of Romainmôtier, which is a member of the ‘Most beautiful villages in Switzerland’.

It takes place in numerous places in the French part of Switzerland and it’s your chance to try some typical Bénichon foods: the ‘Cuchaule’ bread, the saffron mustard, lamb stew with grapes, caramelised pears or smoked ham among many others.

SWISS REAL ESTATE MARKET IN 2019 Buying currently costs less than renting

Buying a home is cheaper than renting in many places thanks to low mortgage interest rates, as illustrated by the 2019 Credit Suisse real estate study. Home ownership costs less, even when all the details are taken into account Whether it’s cheaper to buy or rent a home in your personal situation also depends on many other factors. These include your tax situation and opportunity costs, i.e. alternative ways of investing your equity. The dangers of risk concentration and the risk of temporarily being unable to sell the property also need to be taken into account.

Should you rent or buy? Owning your own home is more attractive than renting thanks to historically low mortgage interest rates.

rental cost of CHF 22,308. Interest costs are, of course, not the only costs that homeowners face. On top of this there are maintenance costs, for example.

The 2019 Credit Suisse real estate study compares the average rent for advertised 4½-room apartments with the interest costs for a condominium of the same size: At CHF 7,862 per year, the interest cost (five-year Fix mortgage) – assuming a loan-to-value ratio of 80% – is significantly lower than the annual

These average about one percent of the property’s value. All in all, this increases the cost of the condominium to CHF 15,362 per year. Nevertheless, that is still significantly less than the cost of renting. Our calculator enables you to compare interest and maintenance costs on a condominium with the cost of renting.

By contrast, real estate creates income opportunities thanks to the long-term increase in the value of your property. These factors nevertheless differ greatly depending on your personal situation and are not taken into account in the calculator. In conclusion, what the 2019 real estate study clearly shows is that, even when all details are taken into account, buying a property in Switzerland often costs less than renting at the moment.

A PICTURE PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS SIS Intercountry Activity 2019: What does a typical school day look like at SIS? Provided by: Marcel Stähli, CEO of SIS Swiss International Schools Schweiz AG All photos were taken on one designated day in each country. Photo composition (e.g. pattern, colour, symmetry), as well as if the photo reflected a typical day, were taken into account when selecting the final photos.

Photography Club at SIS Winterthur

Strong SIS Community This year’s SIS Swiss International School Activity saw the schools of SIS worldwide come alive with student photographers from kindergarten to secondary school aiming to get the best shot of their school for the photography book “A Day in the Life of SIS”. Once per year, the SIS Group organises an event to strengthen the SIS international community by means of an activity. This year, students created a visual time capsule of SIS after 20 years of education through a photography book.

Each school organised the activity in different ways, for example in some just one class was responsible, in others the cameras were passed from class to class throughout the day. At SIS Winterthur, students prepared by means of an afterschool photography club where they were introduced to a range of different elements in photography, explains Larry Wood, principal of SIS Winterthur. “The club met on a weekly basis so that the students had the chance to become familiar with digital cameras, lighting, perspective and editing,” says Larry Wood. During the activity, the team of student photographers were excused from their formal lessons so they could photograph every aspect of the school day: early arrival, lessons, recess, lunch and evening supervision, explains the principal.

to the final product, which is aiming to be published this September. Events such as the intercountry activity strengthen SIS’ school community beyond national borders and celebrate its unique bilingual learning environment. In order to meet the needs of modern families and working parents, SIS offers a structured and challenging programme, including lunch, supervised homework hours, additional supervised periods and courses in the mornings, afternoons and during school holidays. EXPERIENCE BERN AS A LOCAL For first time visitors Bern certainly appears as an impressive, peaceful and charming city. It may take some time for you to discover Bern’s understated hip-ness, but we have some excellent tips that will reveal Bern as the locals see it.

The river Aare is the soul of the city If you want to experience the real Bern, then you should head to the river Aare. From the start of summer until late autumn, the river is bustling with swimmers, paddle boats, BBQ aficionados and even surfers. Swimming, or rather floating in this glacial river is one of the most exhilarating things you can ever experience. And by ‘glacial’ we actually mean ‘coming from glaciers’, as the source of the Aare is a glacier in the Bernese Alps. If you don’t feel like joining the locals for a swim or a boat ride

along the Aare, then grab a lounge chair at one of the lovely bars along the river and watch the happy parade of people heading to the Eicholz camping site in order to jump into the Aare and get off at the lovely Marzili public swimming pools. Read more about this iconic river and why it makes Bern so special on: bit.ly/HelloAare

Locally made craft beer is on the rise The love of artisan brewed beer, or craft beer, is particularly strong in Bern: 176 breweries and microbreweries are registered in Bern, more than anywhere else in Switzerland. Fermenting and brewing happens everywhere in Bern, including in basements, garages, even in laundry rooms. Here are some of our favorite places in Bern to enjoy an excellent locally made beer straight from the tap: 1. Altes Tramdepot: smack in the Old center of Bern, with gorgeous views on the Aare, this place is all about beer and you can quickly see that from the huge copper vats placed in the center of the restaurant.

Find out more about Bern craft beer and where you can sample excellent beers on:

2. The Barbière: one of the trendiest pubs in a very hip neighbourhood, Breitsch (the Bernese short version of Breitenrein). Barbière has its own microbrewery and produces high-quality special beers and ales with influences from the Belgian, English and American brewing cultures. 3. In Lorraine, the artsy neighborhood, you will find Café Kairo. This culture hotspot with cult status includes offerings from small Swiss specialty breweries.

FEATURED PARTNER: RELOCATION

LEAVING SWITZERLAND Essential things to consider when it’s time to leave Switzerland Provided by: Carole Javet, Head of Relocation Services at Packimpex Deregister one step at a time. Check your contracts with each service provider, as each might have different notice periods and also different ways in which you can deregister. Consider temporary accommodation. Your household goods will probably be shipped before you leave. If you can’t stay with friends, then temporary accommodation is an excellent solution. If possible, keep a Swiss bank account open. The return of the security deposit can take up to 1 year and some landlords or real estate agencies can be reluctant to transfer the money to a non-Swiss account.

Avoid a bumpy ride with these tips from relocation experts. From ending utilities and insurance contracts, handling the end cleaning of your apartment, selling your vehicle, deregistering from schools and other authorities – leaving Switzerland is a race against time and a logistical roller coaster. Here is some wisdom from experienced relocation expert Carole Javet to help you manage the complexities of this endeavor. Once you know you are leaving, here is what you need to do: Check your lease contract. Make sure you respect the appropriate notice period as stated in your contract. If you have to leave earlier than that, you will be responsible to find a new tenant, which means advertising the apartment and organizing viewings.

Handle the admin. The most important document you will need to prepare as a first step is a written notice signed by all tenants mentioned in the lease contract. This notice needs to be sent to your landlord by registered post and in due time.

Things don’t end at the handover. Keep your third-party liability insurance active until after the end of the lease contract, since you remain responsible for any damage occurring to the property up to that date.

Plan to the minute. You will need to coordinate the movers and the cleaning company, while also taking into account various repairs that might need to happen. Use a professional cleaning company. Look for one with a “fixed price guarantee” upon successful handover. Allow plenty of time for the handover. Giving back your apartment does not simply mean returning the keys. It is in fact a thorough inspection of the apartment, for which you should allow plenty of time.

FEATURED PARTNER: INSURANCE

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RENTAL SECURITY DEPOSIT INSURANCE Don’t block your money in an expensive rental deposit The smarter alternative: rental deposit insurance

Once you arrive in Switzerland and secure a home, you will have to pay an expensive rental deposit for your flat. Is there a more cost-effective solution? In Switzerland, many landlords ask for a rental deposit consisting of two to three months’ rent. This money remains blocked in the rental deposit account until you move out. That is money that you would most likely prefer to put to better use, like buying furniture for your new home. When you leave your home, there are often disputes with the landlords, who may find damages to the rental property and be unwilling to reimburse your deposit.

With an insurance solution, you can avoid conflicts of this sort, not to mention that it is less expensive. Instead of paying a deposit of CHF 3,000 you would pay a premium of CHF 126 per year, according to Helvetia’s online calculator. In order to benefit from a rental deposit insurance, you will need to contract a personal liability insurance. For the insurance company this guarantees that the costs of any damage to the rental property are covered. Your insurance advisor from Helvetia will be able to conclude both types of insurance and minimize your time involvement. Household contents insurance is also essential to ensure that your personal possessions are insured against damage or loss such as fire, water or theft.
