The fantastic “du Cep à la Cime” trail takes visitors through the region, recounting the fascinating history of the village, its people, and their struggle against the mighty forces of nature.

Restaurant tip: an exquisite architect of flavours

Accommodation tip: the tower amid vineyards

Sierre: Restaurant Terminus

Sierre: Castel de Daval

“To live is to cook and to cook is to live.” This is the motto of Didier de Courten, chef de cuisine at Sierre’s Restaurant Terminus. He creates culinary masterpieces by combining Valais delicacies with specialities from across the globe. De Courten and his team are constantly searching for culinary perfection, while never losing their sense of humour. The results are imaginative, joyful creations that enchant the guests of Terminus. Didier de Courten has been awarded two Michelin stars and 19 Gault&Millaut points in recognition of his inspiring work and grandiose gourmet creations.

The winegrowing estate with its orchards and asparagus fields nestled in the midst of vineyards evolved from the merger of three generations of winegrowing families. Guests can choose today from five four-star rooms in the former water tower, from which they can enjoy panoramic views. It goes without saying that you can also take a tour of the Colline de Daval winegrowing estate, taste and buy wines there. The estate is located near the Rhone bicycle trail and wine route, which is perfect for walks.

NEUCHÂTEL’S GRAPE HARVEST FESTIVAL During the last weekend in September, each and every year, Neuchâtel celebrates the beginning of the grape harvest. Mark your calendars for 28 September – 1 October 2018, when Neuchâtel celebrates the annual grape harvest with this can’t-miss three-day event. Written by: Marina Moeller, marina@muranoglass.ch, www.muranoglass.ch

Fête des Vendanges

Fête des Vendanges

The population of 33,000 grows to over 300,000 every September during its annual three day long Fête des Vendanges — Grape Harvest Festival. The festivities signify the end of the wine harvest for the year.

THE PROGRAMME OF THE CELEBRATION

“New wine is here. All last season’s bottles must be finished,” explains one resident of Neuchâtel. During each festival, traffic is banished from the city centre while adults and children flock to the streets dressed in traditional costumes. For three days and nights, Neuchâtel teems with music, dancing, lights, clinking wine glasses and laugher.

The grand night-time parade with traditional music, with people wearing costumes and celebrating takes place on Friday. You’ll see people in costumes throughout the celebration.

A historical tradition unique to Neuchâtel Neuchâtel, the capital of the French speaking Canton of Neuchâtel, was founded over 1,000 years ago. The castle from which Neuchâtel gets its name (e.g. new castle) was completed in 1011. Today, this magnificent turreted castle hosts the municipal authorities and also allows visitors to tour. The hilly, slow-paced region is rich in traditions, festivals and celebrations. The festival originated more than a century ago. After long work days in the fields, local grape pickers spontaneously walked from cellar to cellar to cheer on wine makers. When the harvest was complete, the wine pickers and farmers noisily accompanied the remaining grape tanks, often decorated with flowers, to the press. The first organized procession took place in October 1900 bringing together comedy groups, equestrians and marching bands. Gradually the spontaneous celebrations became more planned and structured, each year attracting a greater numbers of spectators.

Friday

Saturday The children’s fancy-dress parade, a joyful and colourful event, is traditionally held on the Saturday afternoon.

Sunday The Sunday afternoon floral procession also attracts a vast crown of onlookers. Punctuated by fanfares and peppered with humorous touches by some of the groups in costume, this parade carries on the tradition of the procession of the grape-harvest carts, decorated with flowers and loaded with the wine-growers’ tools, which takes place at the end of the grape harvest.

SIS CUP 2018: INTERNATIONAL SPORTS DAY AT SIS SWISS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL 16 SIS Schools, 3 Countries – 1 SIS Cup Provided by: Andrea Furgler, CEO of SIS Swiss International Schools Schweiz AG

16 SIS Schools – One Educational Concept

SIS schools from Switzerland, Germany and Brazil competed in a two-day tournament to win the third SIS Cup. SIS’ International Sports Day was filled with a lot of fun, exercise and team spirit. From Chess to Table Tennis

Almost a hundred athletes wearing bright jerseys with their names written on their backs and small flags printed on their sleeves arrive at SIS Zürich early in the morning. In come Germany, Switzerland and Brazil. Upon arrival, they are being led to the gym where the opening ceremony with the local school band, speeches and flag dancing will soon begin. This summer, just a couple of days before the kick-off of the World Cup, SIS students from all 16 SIS schools came together at SIS Zürich for their very own World Cup, the SIS Cup: SIS’ International Sports Day.

Over two days, SIS students from grades five and six competed in several team competitions, single and double disciplines, such as table tennis, streetball, chess and an obstacle course. Also the older SIS students had a hand in this year’s SIS Cup, joining the games as helpers, referees and reporters.

And the SIS Cup 2018 goes to… “Sport is a lot like real life: time and time again you lose and you win. This is not what counts however. What really matters is that regardless of failure or victory you gave your best. This is something you can be proud of.” It is with these words that the closing ceremony at the end of the SIS Cup began. SIS Basel took the lead after the first day and SIS StuttgartFellbach won the SIS Cup at the end of day two. The team of ESB Rio de Janeiro came in third place. Like every year, the SIS Cup finalists and winners of the individual disciplines were awarded and celebrated for their great performance.

A bilingual experience, an international outlook with local insight, a diverse day school structure and a strong network are what guarantees learning success at SIS. International activities such as the SIS Cup seek to enliven and strengthen the network of SIS schools across borders. From kindergarten through to secondary and college level, more than 1,500 students from both local and internationally mobile families are educated in English and German at one of the eight SIS schools in Switzerland.

ABOUT ANDREA FURGLER Andrea Furgler is the CEO of Swiss International Schools Schweiz AG. SIS operates 16 bilingual, private day schools in Switzerland, Germany and Brazil with more than 3,600 students attending classes from kindergarten through to college.

PURCHASING REAL ESTATE IN SWITZERLAND BDO explains what foreign buyers need to consider before they intend to buy their dream home in Switzerland. Written by: Dominic Müller, Attorney-at-Law and Marc Bauberger, Attorney-at-Law

Many people dream of buying real estate in Switzerland – a place of their own with stunning views of snow-capped Swiss Alps or one of the country’s sparkling blue lakes. Unfortunately, the real estate dream can quickly feel like a nightmare for foreign buyers struggling to understand Swiss legislation. BDO has successfully helped many clients navigate the complex legal environment to realize their real estate acquisition plans in Switzerland. Contact BDO to discuss your specific situation or learn more about how we can help you with your real estate purchase.

I. There’s a law especially for foreign buyers

II. You’ll need permission – or at least confirmation

IV. You could be affected in a business capacity

Some foreign buyers are surprised to learn that they need approval from cantonal authorities before a deal can go through. Permission is required for foreign buyers who purchase single family dwellings or apartments, owner-occupied flats or building land intended for the construction of such dwellings.

Lex Koller is also relevant for foreign legal entities and companies without legal personality but capable of owning property. Fiduciary transactions and trusts may also fall within the scope of Lex Koller. You could find yourself subject to the legal provisions simply by investing a relevant amount in a company that owns real estate in Switzerland. BDO’s combination of business and legal expertise enable us to deliver answers to complex questions.

Buyers may be relieved to discover that permission is not required in every case, but they must still obtain a declaration from the relevant authorities confirming that permission is not needed. BDO can help you understand exactly what’s required of you and guide you through the relevant application process.

YOUR CONTACT: GORDANA MUGGLER

III. Exceptions can be made

In 1983, Switzerland enacted a law to govern the purchase of property by nonSwiss buyers. For those who don’t know one of Switzerland’s official languages, the Federal Act on the Acquisition of Real Estate by Foreign Persons can seem impenetrable. Known colloquially as “Lex Koller” or “Lex Friedrich”, this law governs main aspects of real estate acquisition by foreign persons.

Permission from authorities is not required depending on the purchaser’s nationality, the type of real estate and the type of acquisition. Sounds complicated? It is. Natural persons with foreign nationality are not considered “foreign persons” in the sense of Lex Koller if they are a citizen of an EC or EFTA Member State and in addition their primary and current residence is in Switzerland. Furthermore, other exceptions may be applicable.

A competent local partner like BDO will guide you smoothly through the requirements and potential pitfalls based on your specific situation.

A review of your specific situation by BDO’s legal professionals will help you quickly establish – and meet – the Swiss legal requirements.

Gordana Muggler is the Head of Global Mobility and HR Services at BDO Switzerland. BDO’s experienced specialists are here to advise and support you and your family members on all aspects of international assignments, be it concerning the arrival to Switzerland or the deployment abroad, from the beginning of the preparations through to the return home.

Cardless Cash is best used, for example, when your child has left their wallet at home. The function in the Credit Suisse Direct app enables you to make cash withdrawals without a card. To do so, go to “Cash transactions” in the app and generate a QR code. Send this to your child by SMS or WhatsApp and your child can then withdraw the amount at a Credit Suisse ATM fitted with a QR code reader – without a card.

Contactless is ideal for making quick purchases in the supermarket. Using Contactless, you can pay using your debit or credit card in just a few seconds – small amounts of up to 40 francs without even entering a PIN or signing. To pay simply hold the card over the surface of the card reader as indicated. This means that the tedious counting out of coins at the checkout is now a thing of the past.

How can I protect myself and my family financially if something were to happen to me or I became ill? Although Switzerland has a wellestablished system of benefit coverage, this question is important for both newcomers to the country and those who have lived in Switzerland for a long time. In many situations, the benefits from the AHV/ AVS, IV/ AI schemes and from pension funds are not sufficient to maintain the accustomed standard of living. In the case of whole life insurance, the predetermined capital is paid out upon the death of the insured person. He or she can choose whom this goes to. Lidija Jezidzic recommends taking out such a policy when you purchase property, too. This is a simple way to protect the family’s mortgage debt. Earning disability insurance covers income shortfalls in the event of disability. In the case of families, risk cover is also recommended for the non-working or only partially employed parent as well as the children, as they generally only receive minimal benefits.
