If you can dream it, you can achieve it. That kind of entrepreneurial spirit has burned inside of June-Marie Essner since she was in middle school. Life, as Essner described it, unfolded merrily enough with marriage and family as she grew older. Yet that deep-rooted passion for fabric that was unleashed with her first sewing project (corduroy wrap skirt) as a middle schooler, still flickered from time to time. “I have wanted to own a fabric store ever since I was in middle school,” Essner says. “I’ve always liked fabric and natural fibers.” She didn’t have to look far for inspiration.

“I come from an entrepreneurial family. My grandparents came from Germany and started a business they owned until they retired. My parents owned a business and my husband and I started a business.” The day of reckoning came about 10 years ago when Essner’s husband, Fred Essner, told her if she truly wanted to open a fabric store she needed to make it happen. Essner has done just that, launching Juneberry Cottage back in 2014, a full service quilt shop that has become an anchor tenant on Main Street in downtown Evart. She’s a fixture in this West Michigan business community and her contributions were recently recognized when the Middle Michigan Development Corporation presented her with its Small Business in
Osceola County Award. “When I first opened, there were not that many businesses on Main Street,” Essner says. “But now 10 new businesses have opened and are still here. Sometimes it may feel like not that much has changed, but it has. It’s neat to see that.” Essner is a member of the Crossroads Quilt Guild, a past member of the Downtown Development /Evart Michigan Main Street Board and volunteers for the Evart Garden Club. “I have to call Evart home because until I moved here, I had never lived anywhere longer than three years, on average,” she says. “We moved here in 1995, so this is home. I have a lot of good connections here, and there’s a sewing and quilting community here, so I thought I could make

It’s a good community to start a business in.” Essner learned to sew on her mother’s Singer, but her store is an authorized Bernina dealer. “Serious sewers and quilters will know the Bernina name,” Essner says. “They know that it’s a top of the line machine. It’s important to educate people who think only Singer, Janome, or Brother are the benchmark brands because they see them in the big box and online stores. In reality, these machines are now all made in Asia under a holding company, not a family-owned company that invests in education and R&D to keep the quality up.” Essner vouches for Bernina machines from her own personal experience. When
she graduated from high school in the early ‘80s her parents bought her a Viking machine. It was what the local school district used for home economics. “We figured if it was good enough for the schools and was long-lasting, it must be a good machine,” Essner says. “It was a good machine for its time.” Still, about 15 years later the machine failed electronically. At the time Essner had three kids from toddler through elementary school age. Her husband worked in the dairy industry, traveling to farms to work on equipment. “His clothing got a lot of wear,” Essner recounted. “He wore Carhartt Logging Jeans. When they needed to be repaired there were times I was going through
6-8 layers of heavy denim… Only the Bernina could go through the denim and the kids’ costume materials. That was the machine I bought and still have. When we decided to become a machine dealer we looked at other companies, but they did not have the support or education for both the dealer and customer that Bernina has.” If you purchase a Bernina, you can be assured that parts will be available for many years. That isn’t the case with other brands, according to Essner. “They do not keep parts on hand for 20 years after the machine production is stopped like Bernina does.”
To Essner, owning a specialty quilt shop where she can share her love of the textile art form is the manifestation of everything she dreamt of as a youngster. She works hard at her craft and, as she continues to learn and grow, is driven to expand Juneberry Cottage’s already vast array of products and services. Sure, the business sells and services top-of-theline sewing machines, but it also carries fabrics and support items to suit your particular project. In addition,Juneberry currently offers longarm quilting services with plans underway to expand into longarm rentals and sales. “I enjoy all aspects of sewing,” she says. “I like looking at patterns, cutting, and the sewing experience. I love that it makes you slow down. If you’re feeling anxious and angry, you have to slow down, or you’re going to make mistakes. The whole process is calming to me. There are a lot of emotional and mental benefits sewing can provide people.” Juneberry Cottage is located at 220 N. Main Street in Evart. In addition to selling and servicing sewing machines, June-Marie Essner leads sewing classes and special events at her sewing machine shop.

Henry came into the shelter in July as a stray, he was mostly feral when we brought him in. Henry would make a great barn cat or would do well in a quiet home with children 10+. Henry doesn’t really want much attention but will come to his new people for a few pets and food.We are estimating that he is 2 years old. We are normally closed for weekends.
