Aloha & Welcome! Thank you very much for coming tonight to support the Pacific Music Institute’s Solo & String Quartet (PMI SSQ) program. We are thrilled to have you in attendance and are excited for our faculty to share their extraordinary talents and unparalleled musicianship with you. A special mahalo to PMI SSQ director Iggy Jang for his work to bring this faculty together and organize this wonderful concert! Close to 200 students from across the Hawaiian Islands, Asia, the U.S. Mainland, and Pacific Rim are participating in PMI this summer; the 32nd edition of PMI since it was founded in 1984. In addition to chamber music, PMI students are studying instrumental techniques, improvisation and jazz, orchestral music, leadership, wellness, and more. Together, they form a community where music is the common language and goal. Tonight’s concert is the first of more than a dozen performances that will be performed by PMI faculty and students. We hope you will be able to join us over the course of the next two weeks and we encourage you to invite your family and friends. We are grateful to each and every one of you for your loyalty and commitment. Mahalo for your support of HYS and our aspiration to make music part of every child’s life. Please Enjoy!

Meet the SSQ Faculty PROGRAM DIRECTOR A dedicated educator, Ignace “Iggy” Jang is on the faculty of the University of Hawaii and Punahou School. He spent much of his time ensuring the success of the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival String Program before joining the Hawaii Youth Symphony. “It is the time you have lost for your flower that makes her so important”, says St. Exupéry’s Little Prince. Jang tries to follow that motto in his teachings year-round, to students of all ages, of all places. As a violinist Ignace “Iggy” Jang is known for his sparkling technical fireworks, his sumptuous and enticing tone, and for his ability to forge personal connections with his audiences. VIOLIN Eugene Chukhlov, Russian-born, studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where pianist Sviatoslav Richter, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, violinist Gidon Kremer, etc. graduated. Eugene was a KGB member and stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan, during the Russia-Afghan war. With over 24 years of performance and teaching experience, Eugene Chukhlov has played an immense role in the success of the HPAF String Program. As a member of the Arlekin String Quartet, he has been affiliated with the chamber music program at San Francisco State University for many years. In addition to his quartet duties, Eugene is applauded regularly as a soloist, chamber and orchestral player. Eugene Chukhlov was born into a family of musicians —his father was concertmaster of an opera company in Russia. After winning his first competition at the age of thirteen, Chukhlov moved from Central Asia to Moscow to further his studies, earning degrees in psychology and pedagogy at Gnesin College and a Masters from the Moscow Conservatory. His teaching commitments at Crowden School and San Domenico have earned him high praises from faculty peers, parents and students alike. He also manages private studios in the East Bay and Marin County and plays with the New Century Orchestra, Opera, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and the Berkeley Symphony. Khullip Jeung is on the faculty of The Juilliard School Pre-College, Mannes College of Music, and BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College). From 2005 to 2014, he has been the music director of the highly acclaimed Good Neighbor Ensemble based in New Jersey and is now the music director of the Love Violin USA, a voluntary, non-profit organization dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of underprivileged children around the world (www.loveviolinusa.org). He is a founding member of the BeneSori Quartet which extensively performs in the NY metropolitan area and the President of the BeneSori Music Foundation which he created in 2013. During the summers, he has taught at the Maui Summer Music Festival and the Waterville Valley Chamber Music Festival. Since the summer of 2014, Mr. Jeung has also been teaching at the Narnia Summer Music Festival in Italy and in 2013, founded the 4Strings Music Festival in New York in which he is also its director. Parry Karp is a active solo artist, performing numerous recitals annually in the United States, and has recorded six solo CDs. He is active as a performer of new music and has performed in the premieres of dozens of works, many of which were written for him, including concerti, sonatas and chamber music. Unearthing and performing unjustly neglected repertoire for cello is a passion of Mr. Karp’s. In recent years he has transcribed for cello many masterpieces written for other instruments. This project has included performances of all of the Duo Sonatas of Brahms. As cellist of the Pro Arte Quartet he has performed over 1000 concerts throughout North, Central and South America, Europe, and Japan.
