About the Jazz Program

A relatively new HYS program, HYS Jazz celebrates its third anniversary this year! HYS Jazz offers Intermediate Contemporary Ensemble and Advanced Contemporary Ensemble for students 14–18. Advancing Hawaii Youth Symphony’s ongoing commitment to making music education accessible to all students, HYS Jazz also recently launched its Beginning Improvisation Group for ages 12 and up. HYS Jazz students are taught the skills necessary to play as a rhythm section, accompany others, and improvise. This season’s HYS Jazz students represent 10 public and independent schools. Though the focus of HYS Jazz is music performance, many entrepreneurial facets of being a professional musician or working in the music industry are addressed throughout the year. Students have direct access to top audio engineers, influential musicians, and music business gurus.

About Music in the Clubhouse

For over a decade, HYS has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i to provide low-cost, entry-level classes to Clubhouse youth. Made possible through the generosity of private foundations, public support, and contributions to HYS, the classes provide free instrument loans, sheet music, and instruction on a weekly basis throughout the school year. More than 5,000 Honolulu-region youth (largely from Mō‘ili‘ili, McCully, Ala Wai, Pauoa, and Nu‘uanu) have had a chance to play music, thanks to our classes at the Spalding Clubhouse. In 2019, HYS launched its Music in the Clubhouse initiative at the Nānākuli Clubhouse along the Wai‘anae coast. Carnegie Hall recognized HYS as Hawaii’s first recipient of a PlayUSA grant, a program that supports a wide range of instrumental music education projects across the nation, all with a specific interest in reaching low-income and underserved students on a local level. HYS also works with string students at Kaunakakai Elementary on Moloka‘i, and provides travel reimbursements and scholarships to Symphony Program and PMI students from Kaua‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i counties.

Message from Maestro Stepec Dear Class of 2022,

A

hearty congratulations to all of you on this special occasion! You made it! This chapter of your lives is now complete— the rest of your story now continues, and the pen is in your hands. I hope that you look upon your high school years with great happiness and I hope that your memories are filled with the music that you made each week with your friends and musical family at the Hawaii Youth Symphony. After countless hours of rehearsal, you must now know the special power that music has to bring people together, to forge new and strengthen old friendships and to bring peace and contemplation to your audience, to our world. I hope that the lessons you have learned in music will inspire every facet of your lives as you go out and begin finding your own place within our busy world. Even though many of you may not continue into music professionally, I hope you continue to support the arts and keep up your “chops”: even in a new environment, your music playing, for example, can help introduce you to new friends and to new places. I look forward to hearing from you. Please stop by when you are home for the holidays. We'd love to hear from you! Congratulations on this achievement, Class of 2022!

Message from Mr. Masaki Aloha HYS Seniors,

T

hank you so much for your musical contributions to the Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) program. During a time when nothing was really certain about anything, you all persevered and did the best you could. I hope someday you will be watching YouTube videos and see the recordings you produced during this time of your life and remember that while things were a little crazy, you still had fun and made lasting memories. For all of you that I have been able to work with at HYS, it was a privilege to share the stage with you and be your conductor. These weren’t easy times for any of us but all of you inspired me to keep working since I knew you were depending on me to lead you through the music and perform to the best of our abilities. I have fond memories of getting to know all of you and I am so proud of what you have accomplished, not just in HYS but in everything you do. Regardless of if I had the opportunity to be your conductor or not, I hope our paths cross sometime in the future because we will be forever linked through our time spent in HYS. Seniors, you were exceptional role models this year and I hope the underclass students have learned from your leadership. Music does a good job of teaching students to work through adversity and the skills you have learned during this pandemic will serve you well in your lives. I wish you all the best and I am truly excited for your futures. Good luck!! Yours Truly, Elton Masaki HYS Symphony Program Conductor

Message from Mrs. Ochi-Onishi Aloha Class of 2022 Seniors:

C

ongratulations to all our Hawaii Youth Symphony Seniors! You deserve many accolades and a roaring standing ovation for all your accomplishments. A special shout-out and sincere mahalo goes to each of you for your patience, hard work, positive attitude, and dedication to music! Your efforts to lead and nurture your peers as positive role models in the HYS Ohana have helped us to overcome transitioning from online rehearsals to in-person rehearsals, flexible instrumentation to combined ensemble groups, rehearsing at the Honolulu Hale to practicing together at the University of Hawaii, and finally, having recording sessions to live in-person performances. Your perseverance, resilience, and practice have come to fruition. After two years of adapting to keep our music and ensembles thriving, our vision of finally playing together in a live performance and in the presence of an audience has become a reality! Thank you very much, HYS Seniors, for being such an inspiration to us! It has been an honor to work with you as one of your conductors. I greatly enjoyed getting to know you and being involved in your musical growth. I will cherish all the memories and the uplifting and expressive sounds of your music! As you graduate and move on to your new journey, please continue to keep music in your lives and make a positive impact in our community. I look forward to your visits and hearing about your wonderful experiences! Best wishes and congratulations! Musically Yours, Susan Ochi-Onishi HYS Symphony Program Conductor

Message from Mr. Fanning Dear Class of 2022,

C

ongratulations! You finished high school during what was and is undoubtedly one of the most challenging times in our recent history. I hope that you will take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments, and to thank those who played a role in helping you to succeed. I am grateful that I got to work with many of you in some capacity, and I wish you nothing but success and happiness in your future. Now more than ever, it is important for you to be ambassadors of music in our world. You are a very talented and motivated senior class, and you were fortunate to experience "normal band and orchestra" in your early high school years. Others younger than you were not so fortunate, so they do not fully realize what music has to offer. It is my hope that you will pass on your love of music to others in your life, so that music remains a strong force in our lives forever. Best wishes to all of you! We are all very proud of you! Aloha, Wayne Fanning HYS Symphony Program Conductor

Message from Ms. Watanabe Dear Class of 2022,

I

am so VERY PROUD of all of you! You’ve come such a long way and had to persevere through some very tough times. This pandemic taught you a lot of things. You have all had to learn how to deal with constant change, taught you patience as we all had to work together to keep each other safe, and showed you how important it is to not take things for granted. You have helped to keep music alive in our state by not giving up and continuing to find ways to make music through your school programs, HYS, private lessons, and on your own. My hope is that music has made a difference in your life, and that you have learned much from being a musician and part of an ensemble. I hope that you will continue to make music in whatever capacity you choose to and be a life-long supporter of the arts. I feel extremely blessed to have worked with many of you, and I wish you all the best in the future! Aloha, Hannah Watanabe HYS Symphony Program Conductor

Message from Mr. Taba Dear HYS JAZZ Seniors,

I

am a firm believer that “you play who you are” and you have all shown us that you are remarkable people and musicians. What a joy it has been to see your dedication and hard work applied to the opportunities and challenges that have presented themselves this past season. And for some of you, since the inception of this HYS JAZZ program. Your good work and support of each other in rehearsals, Zoom classes and performances has been an inspiration to myself, Mr. Howe and Mr. Okimoto. Thank you for that. Nothing makes us happier than seeing you turn around to listen to each other improvising or supporting the soloist to create something that is “greater than the sum of its parts.” As you move on to your next chapter, we hope that you keep in touch and let us know about all your endeavors, musical and otherwise. And remember to apply to life what you did in these improvising ensembles

Class of 2022 Andy Au

Youth Symphony I / Cello / Kalani High School

H

i, my name is Andy Au. I am a student at Kalani High School and current member of Youth Symphony I. I have been playing the cello for six years under the tutelage of Pauline Bai and joined the Hawaii Youth Symphony five years ago. Starting in Concert Orchestra, I’ve had the opportunity to play in all three HYS ensembles (CO, YSII, and YSI). Because of HYS, I’ve been able to work with and play alongside many talented and hardworking musicians. Through playing in an ensemble, HYS has taught me the value of cooperation and doing your part to make music come together. Even during the pandemic, I was able to make many great friends through HYS’s Chamber Orchestra A. I hope to take these lessons along with my appreciation for music into the next stage of my life. Alongside playing in the Hawaii Youth Symphony, I enjoy playing other instruments such as the bass and guitar, as well as playing sports such as soccer or volleyball. After graduating high school, I plan to attend university and study neuroscience & behavior, later attending medical school.

e

David Cassens

Intermediate Contemporary Ensemble / Bass Guitar / Roosevelt High School

T

hroughout the trials and tribulations of my last four years of high school, I always felt a sense of isolation. This was compounded by the onset of the pandemic. Along with balancing schoolwork and the stress of remote learning, I also had to contend with the social isolation from my peers. The Combo was the one place where I was able to feel a sense of belonging, especially during the pandemic. It was where I could learn and connect with my friends through the world of jazz. Through the mentorship of our leaders, Mr. Taba, Mr. Howe, and Mr. Okimoto, we were given a unique opportunity and insight in the world of jazz. This allowed me to hear and be heard through my music. I am grateful for the knowledge that I’ve gained as a student of the HYS Jazz Combo; something that will forever be with me as I continue further on my musical journey.

e

Noah Chang

Advanced Contemporary Ensemble / Drum Set / Maryknoll School

N

oah has played the drum set in the Hawaii Youth Symphony’s top jazz combo since the program was created. Simply put, he would describe performing improvisational music as “epic.” Noah would like students to know that, above all, it is their willingness to put themselves out there that will guide them to new heights. Aside from the Hawaii Youth Symphony, he is also the Senior Class President of his school and a member of the Coalition for a TobaccoFree Hawaii Youth Council’s leadership team. Also, he owns a YouTube channel called Atticus Drums where he covers his favorite songs. Noah plans to major in computer science in college, but he hopes to continue uploading videos to this channel on the side.

Zoe Chang

Youth Symphony I / Percussion / Sacred Hearts Academy

S

ince I was around three years old, I have been taking classes in piano. When I entered seventh grade, I started band by playing percussion! I am grateful to Mr. Keith Higaki, my piano teacher, Anne Craig Lum, and my friends and family for supporting me in my journey throughout performing music. Without their encouragement, I would not have had the confidence to believe in myself and audition for HYS this year. Despite being a Senior at Sacred Hearts Academy, this was my first year performing with HYS, moreover participating with YSI. Through HYS, I have grown both as a person and as a player; HYS has put so much responsibility and trust in me, and I am glad that I could take that back to Sacred Hearts Academy. At the Academy, I am in my fifth year performing with the band and am the percussion section leader. If I am not in the band room practicing or talking with my friends, I am most likely running around campus or at track and field practice (I run the sprints and relays.) I hope to attend college on the mainland, where I will study business (accounting, marketing, and business management), legal studies, sports, and minor in Chinese. I hope to continue performing percussion in college, and I am excited to see what the world has in store for me!

e

Kaitlyn Dote

Youth Symphony II / Viola / Mid-Pacific Institute

T

hough Kaitlyn only joined the Hawaii Youth Symphony this year, she is extremely appreciative of how many people she has met. She is forever grateful for the introduction to playing in a symphony setting in addition to being around like-minded people who also enjoy creating beautiful music. Kaitlyn has been playing the viola since elementary school but only decided to take music seriously after Pacific Music Institute in the summer of 2021. While PMI that year wasn’t “normal,” she still enjoyed playing chamber music so much that she decided to participate in two quartets this past year. She currently attends Mid-Pacific Institute where she participates in their International Baccalaureate Diploma program and in her school’s orchestra. While taking on an academic challenge and pursuing music, she still takes time to enjoy her hobbies which include photography, cooking and baking, watching Netflix (after finishing her homework, of course), and going out with friends. Kaitlyn will be attending a college on the mainland and pursuing a bachelor's degree in music. She will then proceed to get a graduate degree and perhaps a music education degree so she can have the same valuable impact on future music students that her teachers had on her.

Rafael Elham

Youth Symphony II / Violin / McKinley High School

T

welve years ago, I started on a path that would change my life forever. That path was learning to play the violin. Throughout my journey, I had experienced it all. The excitement, the sadness, the pain, the exhilaration. And with all those experiences, I grew. Music didn't just teach me how to screech a couple of notes. It taught me how to make a piece of wood sing. It taught me how to tell tales not through words, but melodies. It taught me patience and determination. It showed me that like how rivers create canyons, sheer dedication created skill. It molded me into who I am today. This is why I am glad I joined HYS. I started back in the Academy Strings with ISE, and while it was a slow climb, it taught me most of what I previously mentioned. I am now in Youth Symphony II, and I hope to eventually be in the music program for whatever college I go to. Thank you, to all the staff in the Hawaii Youth Symphony for making a truly enjoyable era for me. I will never forget the experience.

Jacob Fetterman

Youth Symphony I / Horn / Kalani High School

I

have played horn in HYS for the past five years and can confidently say that it has been a life changing experience for me. Since joining the Youth Symphony II program in eighth grade, the friendships I’ve made over the years have been absolutely incomparable. I always liked the idea of everyone working together, getting serious, as well as having fun in order to make quality music for people to enjoy. I believe that the HYS program offers this tenfold. HYS taught me that practice and dedication, as well as trying again after you fail, will lead to success. There will be tragic and unexpected failures in your life that you must be ready to overcome through time and patience. HYS has definitely taught me that hard lesson. Thank you to Rory Onishi for being the best lessons teacher, as well as a great friend. Thank you to my horn section for literally being the greatest, coolest, and most competent horn friends I’ve ever sat besides, causing me to practice significantly more than I thought I would.

e

Emily Fujii

Youth Symphony I / Oboe / Kalani High School

I

have been a member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony for five years and an oboist for almost seven. I was with YSII in the eighth grade, then YSI from ninth grade forward. Music has provided me with many things in my life, shaped me significantly in various ways, and has consistently been an outlet for me. Grateful for the privilege to have participated in the program for a large portion of my adolescence, I feel lucky to be a part of such a community. Being in HYS, I never struggled to understand the importance of unity. After the bulk of the pandemic, returning to HYS in person felt like relief and I gained a new appreciation. The unique experience of playing in a symphony comes with many things, including a special form of communication. I hope to always surround myself with music. After graduating, I plan on attending a mainland university for a possible degree in journalism or physics with a minor in music.

e Roice Galapon

Youth Symphony I / Percussion / Moanalua High School

R

oice Galapon has been a member of HYS as a percussionist for five years. In his first year, he started in CO then became the principal percussionist the following year. He spent his last three years in YSI. Roice attends Moanalua High School and is a part of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Menehune Marching Band in the school's music department. He plans to attend the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa to major in electrical engineering and continue his studies in music. Roice likes meeting musicians from different schools who share the same passion in music as him. He is going to miss playing percussion with his friend Tristan who started with him in his first year in CO. Roice has learned the importance of being a leader and being prepared for every rehearsal. As a percussionist, he understands how important it is to play with an ensemble. He will use everything that he has learned throughout his time in HYS and apply it to his next chapter in music. He is grateful for all the friends, instructors, and people that have made his HYS experience possible, an experience that he will never forget.

Ethan Garland

Youth Symphony I / Trumpet / Kalani High School

I

joined the Hawaii Youth Symphony in my freshman year of high school. Joining HYS has taught many lessons in and outside of music. My favorite thing about HYS is the people I get to meet from all of the different schools around the island. I plan to take the lessons I learned to University of Hawai'i Mānoa and continue to participate in the music programs there.

e Morgan Garza

Youth Symphony II / Oboe / Sacred Hearts Academy

M

usic has become a big part of my life. Starting from my seventh grade year, I could have never imagined what I signed myself up for. All my experiences and hard work have led me to be a member of HYS for my last two years of high school. Through this program, I have been able to work with other young and talented musicians and create amazing music and memories. I have also enjoyed learning more about instruments I have never been given a chance to work with before. Despite the challenge of being online for one year due to the pandemic, I still appreciated that the program offered various opportunities to learn and grow. Having the ability to adapt to current situations and make the best of them is crucial in life. HYS has allowed me to prove I have this ability, especially with the current circumstances. As I close in on my high school career, I plan to stay close to home and attend the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa to study computer science and possibly minor or double major in music. Wherever life takes me, I’m eternally grateful for the opportunities I have been blessed with as well as the people who have supported me and helped me be the person I am today.

e

Spencer Howe

Intermediate Contemporary Ensemble / Alto Saxophone / Kaiser High School

I

joined HYS during the peak of COVID-19, and it really brought joy to my otherwise boring existence, cooped up in my room. The exploration of music was able to free me from the confines of a nationwide lockdown, and practicing my alto saxophone let me express myself in a very meaningful way. I've been inspired by my time at HYS to pursue some form of musical development at all times in my life, from college onwards. Working with the wonderful teachers and fellow students during my time in both the summer and the current school year has been a great experience, one I won't soon forget. As I am a very social person, playing music with others, collaborating, and creating something amazing is what I play music for. Music and jazz especially have helped shape who I am, and I thank HYS and my friends that I've played with for providing such a great experience.

than has been a member of HYS for three years. He started off in YSII in his freshman year and moved up to YSI in the following year as a cellist. Due to COVID-19, he was forced to endure a painful year without HYS and in his senior year was once again able to play in YSI. He is currently attending Mililani High School with plans to pursue a degree in computer engineering in college and join a college orchestra. Being a part of HYS gave him the opportunity to meet many musically gifted students with who he was able to share the joy of music over the years. HYS has taught him about the challenges and joys of an advanced orchestral environment and showed him how effective teamwork can create powerful music. As he moves forward with his life, he will never forget the memories he made in HYS and will look back at it as a wonderful time spent with wonderful people.

e

Elvis Imamura

Advanced Contemporary Ensemble / Electric Guitar / ‘Iolani School

E

lvis learned his first instrument, the guitar, at the age of six when his father secretly bought one for himself behind his mother's back. Over the next twelve years, Elvis taught himself how to play various instruments, ranging from piano to saxophone. His first involvement with HYS was a brief ukulele class in elementary school, and he returned in 2021 as the guitarist for the jazz program. In addition to ACE, Elvis plays in the 'Iolani Stage Band, Jazz Combo, Marching Band, and Spring musical pit orchestra. He is also a member and mentor of the 'Iolani robotics team and hopes to study aerospace engineering in the fall. In his free time, Elvis enjoys cooking and baking for his friends, but they've recently been starving because school is rough. Elvis would like to thank the HYS Jazz instructors, Dean Taba, Noel Okimoto, and Ryan Howe for their continued support both in and outside of the rehearsal space. He also wishes his fellow HYS seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors!

rowing up, I accumulated a strong love for music. Given the opportunity to choose an instrument in the sixth grade, I chose to play the French horn. I eventually found my way to Hawaii Youth Symphony where I played in the Concert Orchestra for two years and after a long time of hard work, here I am in YSI. At Roosevelt High School, I enjoy being a part of the symphonic band, symphonic orchestra, and the marching band. As made evident by the amount of musical activities I take part in, music is a major part of my life. In the near future, I plan to attend a four-year university where I will study music education. Being able to become a future educator that can pass down the love for music that I will always have is something important to me. Thanks to the HYS program, I have been given access to many great educators who later inspired me to where I am now. I would also like to thank my family and friends who gave me unconditional support throughout my musical journey. Thanks to you all, I am able to become the best version of myself.

This experience sprung me into the HYS Jazz program, where I currently play the electric bass with the Advanced Contemporary Ensemble. Even in this relatively short time, I have gained an invaluable amount of experience, exploring the art of improvisation, meeting very talented musicians, and advancing my ability as a jazz musician as a whole. I am currently a senior at Kalani High School, playing in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Falcon Marching Band and Jazz Band. After I graduate, I plan to attend the University of Hawai‘i, where my interest in STEM is pointing me towards a major in mechanical engineering. I look forward to playing with the UH Jazz Band and continuing my music career.

Eric Kim

Youth Symphony I / Bassoon / Roosevelt High School

I

have been a part of HYS for three years (excluding last year because of the pandemic). I joined HYS in my freshman year of high school and have grown my interest and passion for music since then. I enjoyed growing with my peers, learning a lot of lessons, most importantly, what it means to be a part of an ensemble and specifically how to play as a group. I am really grateful for the experience I received while playing with HYS as it helped to bloom my passion. I look to pursue this passion further in college, and if it weren't for HYS, I probably wouldn't be in this position where my love and passion for music trumps many other factors in my life. A few of my favorite memories were from the Listen and Learn concerts, where I was able to meet and become close with a lot of different people, some of which, weren't even in my group that year. Once again, I am incredibly grateful for HYS and if it were possible, I would participate in it over and over again.

Meenakshi Kutty

Youth Symphony II / Violin / St. Andrews Priory

M.

is a senior at St. Andrew’s Schools and has been a part of HYS since the fifth grade as a violinist. M. began their music path with piano in kindergarten, which then led to an interest in other instruments. M. also enjoys other artistic pursuits in the visual and performing arts, such as theatre, videography, illusion painting, and dance. Since the beginning of HYS, M. really found their passion for the arts and was able to find their true authentic voice, leadership, and expression through music. Although M. will be going into the field of medicine, they will be staying in Hawaiʻi minoring in theatre and continuing to advocate/ represent as the student voice for the importance of arts education and under-represented voices in Hawaiʻi’s arts community. They will also, for sure, still be making music! M. would like to thank their parents for all the support in pursuing the arts, Mr. Chad Uyehara for teaching violin and music as more than just a performance (and for also making M. cry about each HYS audition), and HYS for creating the experience that allowed M. to truly believe in the importance of receiving an arts education.

Christine Lau

Youth Symphony I / Violin / Kalani High School

M

y musical journey began when I asked to learn the piano and was handed a violin instead. Despite my initial hesitance, I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn how to play the violin. Learning how to play an instrument has taught me to be open-minded towards all styles of music and its instruments. After playing the violin, I learned how to play the flute, and have been trying to learn how to play more instruments as a hobby of mine. I joined Kalani High School’s Marching Band and had the privilege to perform as a member of the color guard. With HYS, I’ve been given the chance to play all types of music - from Mahler to Zelda - and have met so many people who value music just as much as I do. I’d like to thank my family, the conductors, and the staff of HYS. Although I will be transitioning into the next stage of my life, I will definitely cherish the memories and lessons HYS has given me!

Eileen Liu

Youth Symphony I / Clarinet / ‘Iolani School

E

ileen started her career as a clarinetist in fourth grade through her school’s after school band program. With the support of her parents, Eileen quickly developed a love for the clarinet and soon began private lessons in fifth grade. Throughout her musical career, Eileen has had the opportunity to participate in all three of Hawaii Youth Symphony’s main symphony programs, OBDA’s Solo and Ensemble, and ‘Iolani’s Wind Ensemble, Spring Musical Pit, Woodwind Quartet, and Orchestras 4 and 5. Throughout her time as a clarinetist, Eileen has found solace in music, especially through clarinetist Sabine Meyer’s beautiful performances. Eileen is thankful to have such a wonderful family among her fellow musicians and clarinets. Whether it be wearing red shirts as scarves with her section, complaining about reeds, or taking up practice time with friendly banter, Eileen will forever cherish the friendships and memories she has made with her fellow clarinetists. Aside from music, Eileen enjoys baking tasty treats, crocheting small creatures, brewing and drinking tea, taking care of her plants, and rambling on with her debate team of which she co-captains. Regardless of where she ends up, Eileen will always treasure the memories and music she has made as a clarinetist. After high school, Eileen plans to study business administration and marketing while continuing her love for music in local or school-based music programs.

T

his is Joey’s first year in the Hawaii Youth Symphony, and he has enjoyed it very much! He regrets not joining earlier. Joey has been playing the cello with Ms. Louise Ching since 2009, and after many interactions with the Youth Symphony and its members, he finally auditioned in his senior year. He is grateful to be a member of YSI and get to make music with such talented people. He thanks Mr. Masaki and Mr. Stepec for being incredible conductors and is amazed by how well the symphony has been able to continue to make music even during the pandemic. Aside from the Youth Symphony, Joey has been an active member of the music community at ‘Iolani School, where he is the principal cellist and a member of the chamber music program. Joey hopes to continue his musical journey in college and plans to study music and mathematics.

Kristyn Miyamoto

Youth Symphony I / Violin / Moanalua High School

K

ristyn has played the violin since the age of six and played with the HYS Academy Strings since elementary school. She has been a part of HYS ever since and is grateful for how music has positively impacted her life. Currently, a member of YSI, she has learned invaluable lessons such as perseverance and the impact that she can make on her community. Her favorite part about being a member of YSI is that she is able to perform for her community in many ways such as with the outer island performances and the Listen and Learn concerts. Not only that, but she has also been able to enhance her musical playing by performing and playing beside students from schools aside from her own. YSI provides unique experiences that she cannot get anywhere else. In the future, she will always take with her the experiences of performing complex musical works alongside other students who share the same passion for enhancing the community around them.

Pieter Nauwelaerts

Youth Symphony I / Violin / University Lab School

I

’ve been in HYS for a long time. I started down in the string academy as a violinist in SOE, moving all the way to YSI my senior year. HYS has allowed me to play as a part of a string ensemble as well as a full symphonic orchestra. Some of the pieces we’ve played over the years were so exciting and really helped me fall in love with music. After high school, I’ll be going to college on the mainland to study computer engineering, but I hope to continue playing in the university orchestra.

Youth Symphony I / Violin / Punahou School

B

ao Nguyen began his musical journey with the Hawaii Youth Symphony in elementary school as a part of the Music4Kids program at the Boys and Girls Club. Since then, he has participated in HYS’s Symphony Program and began playing in Youth Symphony I during his freshman year. Bao has been studying violin for eight years under the tutelage of Mr. Colin Belisle. He is a member of the Punahou Symphony and the Vaught Memorial Piano Quintet in the Punahou Chamber Music Program. Bao also studies piano under the instruction of Dr. Wendy Yamashita. In addition to music, he is a member of Punahou’s Science Bowl Team and Math Team and performs chemistry research at the Hyvl Group at UH Mānoa. Bao enjoys reading, eating, biking, and hanging out with friends during his free time. He will always cherish the memorable experiences he has shared with his mentors and fellow musicians throughout his HYS experience. Bao is incredibly grateful for the guidance and support of Mr. Randy Wong, Dr. Joseph Stepec, Mrs. Susan Ochi-Onishi, his Punahou Orchestra Directors, and his many other mentors. He is also thankful for the many years of endless encouragement from his parents.

M

usic has been a key part of my life throughout my years on the island. Thank you to all of those who have supported me during my career and for all of the amazing experiences I've received. I remember in seventh grade when I was struggling to find my place, but the friends I made through HYS programs quickly helped me to understand the island lifestyle and the music community around me. From quintets to orchestras, solos to playing on new instruments; the memories I’ve made are countless. I wish those graduating the best of luck wherever you may go for college, and I hope that everyone continues their musical along with their academic learning. To those not graduating yet, keep practicing! It builds good work ethic, and the results are tangible and satisfying. Good luck out there, everybody, and stay safe.

Youth Symphony I / Violin / Punahou School

E

llie attended her first violin lesson at the age of three and currently studies under the inspiring instruction of Mrs. Kathy Hafner. Her life-changing Hawaii Youth Symphony journey began in the eighth grade when she earned a seat in YSII, and she has had the honor of being a YSI violinist for the past four years. Through this one-of-a-kind opportunity, Ellie has learned countless lessons in discipline, musicianship, and leadership through the memorable teamwork of everyone involved in HYS, including her fellow orchestra mates. Her fondest memories of HYS include the neighbor island trips where she wove strong friendships with her peers, as well as the opportunities to share music with her community through events such as the Listen and Learn concerts. Aside from her membership in HYS, Ellie enthusiastically serves as the concertmaster of the Punahou Symphony Orchestra and participates in the Punahou Chamber Music Program. Her passions also extend beyond music to the Punahou Cross Country and Track and Field teams, where she has been twisting every joint in her body since the seventh grade. Ellie hopes to attend college on the West Coast where she can pursue a career in law while still remaining close to her family. She is extremely grateful to her parents, Mrs. Hafner, Mr. Young, Dr. Carlson, Mrs. Casano, Dr. Stepec, and the support team of HYS.

Aaron Omon

Youth Symphony I / Clarinet / Hawaii Baptist Academy

I

have played the clarinet since I was in sixth grade, and I learned about HYS from my private lesson teacher. I auditioned when I was in eighth grade because I was curious to know what it would be like to perform orchestral music with an even bigger group of students than my school band at the time. I started out in YSII, and I eventually moved up to YSI in my freshman year of high school. HYS has been an inspirational learning experience for me, as the satisfaction of learning new pieces and building lifelong friendships with other musicians allowed me to connect with music on an emotional level and find even more joy in every step of my musical journey. It has also opened my eyes to the impact that music can have on the community, especially through the “Listen and Learn” performances which spark elementary students’ interest and excitement to start learning instruments themselves. Outside of HYS, I have also led my school as the Student Council President, and I have done community service in my school’s Interact Club, starting out as a member before becoming the Vice President in my senior year. When I go to college, I’m planning to major in biology and pursue a career in the medical field while also continuing my passion for music. Celebrating Our 58th Season

M

usic has been a part of my life since I was six years old. It has shaped me into the person I am today. I am grateful for all of the blessings and experiences that music and HYS have given me. I started HYS in third grade as a member of SOE. I remember how immediately I fell in love with playing in an orchestra. Hearing sounds coming from different instruments intertwining into a beautiful harmony is beyond surreal. Nine years have passed, and I am now in YSI; my passion for playing in an ensemble never once faded. Along with teaching me the vitality of responsibility and teamwork, HYS has gifted me with lifelong companions and thrilling experiences. There is nothing more exciting than playing in a symphony orchestra concert, and I learned that through HYS. I will take the passion I have developed for music as an HYS member and continue to soar even further into the galaxy of music in the future.

e

Gabriel Paraso

Youth Symphony I / Bassoon / Moanalua High School

G

abriel only recently joined the HYS program starting this year as YSI’s second bassoonist. He has been playing the bassoon since just before middle school, making it nearly six years since he started. He is also proficient at the tenor saxophone, which he has been playing for four years. He is currently attending Moanalua High School and is a member of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Menehune Marching Band and Color Guard, and Jazz Band. After graduating from Moanalua, he plans to attend the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa to continue studying music. Despite Gabriel’s brief time as a part of the HYS program, he was exposed to the idea of playing alongside incredible musicians that weren't from his own school. This helped him to not only assume, but to see for himself that the music community is enormous and full of great people. Gabriel would like to thank his parents for saying yes, and allowing him to participate in music from the very beginning until now, Mr. Ryan Howe for helping him to build a strong foundation as a musician and as a person, Mr. Elden Seta for reinforcing that foundation all throughout his high school career, Mr. Richard Hotoke for being the most chill and effective private lessons teacher there is, and to everyone who helped him along his journey in music.

e

Justin Park

Youth Symphony I / Horn / Kamehameha School

I

n sixth grade, Justin Park began playing the French Horn and joined YSII in ninth grade. Being a part of HYS gave him an opportunity to grow as a musician and as a person. He was fortunate to participate in many programs and concerts. Many memories and friendships were formed over the past four years. Many thanks to Rory Onishi, Mr. Masaki, Dr. Stepec, Mrs. Ochi-Onishi, volunteers, and especially his parents for supporting, inspiring, and encouraging him to continue his music passion and take a risk. From HYS to participating in Music for All’s Honor Band of America and studying music composition at Interlochen Center of the Arts, he learned that big chapters and achievements are made possible through risk-taking. By submitting that application, playing or recording that audition, or even sending that one email, nothing will happen if you don’t try!

Katherine Ricks

Youth Symphony II / Violin / Utah Online School

021–2022 was my first year participating in HYS and it was a wonderful experience. Throughout the years I've been playing violin, I've primarily focused on solo playing. So, when the opportunity arose to join an orchestra, I decided to take it. I joined Symphony Strings for the first semester, and later it became YSII. Because of Covid, some changes had to be made. Having rehearsal on Zoom was not ideal, so when we finally met in person it was very exciting. In addition to HYS, I enjoy playing the piano and reading or listening to books, mainly Classics. I love spending time with friends and family and serving the people at my church. I recently got accepted into my top choice for school, but I am still looking into all the options I have. I want to continue doing music throughout my life, so I'll probably join an orchestra while in college. HYS has prepared me to play with multiple people and listen to the other people around me. I am grateful for this short yet impactful experience I've had with HYS.

usic has been a chapter in my life for such a long time. This experience, that not many people get to do, is not only an honor but a privilege to be able to play an instrument and to perform with such an amazing group of people. Sadly, this will be my one and only year in HYS, but it was worth joining because otherwise, I would not have been able to play such amazing literature and to meet so many new people. After high school I will be continuing my knowledge of music at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa majoring in Music Education and Performance. After this, I will be continuing music education to further my knowledge, and to hopefully one day become a Music Professor. I want to be able to give back to future generations and keep music in my life. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout the six years I have spent with music. I especially want to thank my parents who have driven me to various practices for different ensembles such as the Moanalua High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, Brass Quintet, Marching Band and some out of school ensembles like the Central District Honor Band and HYS. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of music; but, more importantly for saying, “yes.”

Youth Symphony I / Trumpet / Roosevelt High School

T

he Hawaii Youth Symphony has allowed me to play music with some of the best youth musicians on the island. This experience has allowed me to both grow and develop as a musician and as a person. When I first joined the Youth Symphony in eighth grade, I knew how special this group and program was. This program has allowed me to play music with people I would have never been able to play with otherwise. I truly believe that the Youth Symphony has changed my life for the better, and although I don’t plan on becoming a professional musician, I know the memories and lessons I’ve learned from being a member of the Youth Symphony will stick with me for the rest of my life.

David Togami

Youth Symphony I / Trombone / Pearl City High School

I

started playing my instrument the summer entering seventh grade and ever since then, I loved playing my instrument. Throughout high school I took lessons while participating in as many music opportunities as possible, and even was able to make it into select band my sophomore year. Sadly, I wasn't able to participate in it due to a crippling spinal cord injury. However, through physical therapy, I was able to recover a great amount of function in my lower half. I'm so thankful to have this opportunity to play in this wonderful ensemble where I can learn from much better players and experience creating amazing music.

e

Outside of school, she likes to read, hang out with her friends, and go on long walks. She doesn’t know what college she’s attending, but she plans to major in Civil Engineering while continuing music as a hobby. have been a member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony for four years, playing the French Horn in YSI since my freshmen year of high school. During my time in HYS, I have met with and created music with so many wonderful people including my peers in HYS. I appreciate how HYS has provided me with so many opportunities to perform music for the community. My experience in HYS has enabled me to realize the great joy I feel when creating music with others and performing music for others. After graduating from high school, I plan to attend Princeton University and major in Molecular Biology, but I plan to continue pursuing my passion for music as well, playing the French Horn for clubs and ensembles.

e

Pamela Villanueva

Youth Symphony I / Oboe / Waipahu High School

I

picked up the oboe in eighth grade without realizing how important it would be to my life and personal growth. I transferred to Waipahu High School in my sophomore year to be in a music program and this transfer helped with my musical growth. At Waipahu was when I first heard about Hawaii Youth Symphony and other musical opportunities like it. Although I was only in it for a year because of the pandemic, I was grateful for what I was able to do in that short time. Listening to and playing with strings in person will always amaze me. I’ve learned so much within the past several months just being in an orchestra. Playing with strings and a smaller wind section is so different than in band class. We also play challenging pieces with people from various backgrounds and that has pushed me to take on new perspectives both musically and mentally. It has been an honor to experience YSI with these talented musicians and educators. I want to thank Mr. Kawasaki, Mr. Akamine, Mr. Lim, Mr. Fu, and Mrs. Ochi-Onishi for playing a part in my musical journey. I plan to pursue music education at UH Mānoa and make a difference in the best way I know how through music.

hen I was in seventh grade, I watched my older brother perform with YSII and seeing how much he enjoyed it, I decided I wanted to try it as well. I started HYS in eighth grade, spending one year in YSII and all of my high school years as a member of YSI. Being a band student, HYS gave me the opportunity to be a part of an orchestra and experience playing different types of music with students from other schools. My favorite part of being in YSI was getting to travel to Maui and Kauai to perform. Aside from HYS, I am the first seat horn player in the Kalani High School Wind Ensemble and was drum major for the 2021 Falcon Marching Band. Since sixth grade, music has been a very important part of my life and I would not be the person I am today without it. I am definitely planning on keeping music as a part of my life for as long as I can and I would like to sincerely thank all my band directors, music teachers, friends, and family for helping me on my musical journey so far. I will never forget the experiences and lessons I’ve learned from the Hawai’i Youth Symphony, and I will miss being a part of this organization. Thank you!

C

hristian Yamada has been a member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony for seven years. Starting off in CO as a cellist, Christian has been a part of all three orchestral ensembles, being in YSII for one year, and YSI for four years. Some of his favorite orchestral repertoire he's played with YSI includes Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances, and the Star Wars Main Title. He currently attends Punahou School where he is the principal cellist of the Punahou Symphony Orchestra and plays with the Vaught Piano Quintet. He plans to major in mechanical engineering with a minor in music performance. Apart from music, Christian enjoys participating in Mock Trial, Academy Music Club, hiking, and ILH swim team. Being a part of the Hawaii Youth Symphony has taught him the importance of making music in an ensemble and sight-reading. HYS provided Christian an exceptional and memorable musical experience. He would like to thank his conductors and administrators Mr. Joseph Stepec, Mr. Craig Young, Mr. Jonas Carlson, Mrs. Helen Casano, and Mr. Aris Doike, his teachers Mrs. Joanna Morrison and Mrs. Anna Callner-Pare, his past coaches Mr. Iggy Jang, Mr. Deven Kono, and Ms. Maile Reeves, his parents Allie and Clayton, and his step-parents Lenny and Liane.

Jason Yee

Youth Symphony II / Violin / Punahou School

I

started playing violin at the age of five, after watching an episode of Sesame Street, and then telling my parents about the crazy instrument that I had encountered during my binging. They then rented a tiny, ¼ size violin for me to start learning on and I soon discovered that it was not as easy as I thought that it would be. However, I soon grew to love playing the violin. I truly appreciate all the great memories I have had while playing in CSO, CO, YSII, and Punahou Symphony. I am excited to bring this skill that I have developed with me into the wider world as I go to college and beyond. Outside of school and HYS, I enjoy hanging out with friends, going to the beach, snorkeling, surfing, and martial arts. I hope to participate in a college orchestra in order to keep up my skills while pursuing a possible major in some area of engineering (Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical). HYS has taught me so much about preparation, how to work with a group and how to reach for your goals in life, and I want to thank HYS for all of the support it has given me and so many others in our young musical careers.

His training is in classical music, and he really enjoyed playing jazz while improvising with a team! The improvisation and to hear all of the different instruments coming together to form a song was very rewarding. During the summers through Covid, I enjoyed spending time in nature through a leadership program and contributed to the reforestation and planting agriculture locally in the islands. I am looking forward to going to either Tokyo or Boston for college after this year. Everyone was so talented and great to work with. It was an amazing experience being a part of the Hawaii Youth Symphony.

have been playing the clarinet for about six years now and I can truly say that music will forever have a special place in my heart. I started HYS as a member of Concert Orchestra; I then progressed to Youth Symphony II the following year, and unfortunately missed the next year due to the pandemic. This year, I'm proud to be a part of Youth Symphony I, getting the opportunity to play alongside some of my greatest peers and friends despite the conditions we may be in at the moment. Though I plan to go on pursuing a career in the legal field in Washington D.C., music has taught me the discipline, teamwork, attitude, and hard work that will always help me to excel in whatever I may face. Whether it be learning a difficult clarinet concerto, mastering a difficult passage in an orchestra piece, or studying government and politics in college, I know that the lessons I've learned from playing music will forever be prevalent in my life.
