Youth Symphony I JOHN DEVLIN

Music Director & Youth Symphony I, Conductor

J

ohn Devlin is the newly-appointed Music Director of Hawaii Youth Symphony, and Artistic Director of the Pacific Music Institute. Devlin is a passionate educator and an active conductor of outstanding high school and collegiate ensembles. Previously, Devlin served as the Music Director of both the McLean Youth Orchestra and the Youth Orchestras of Prince William in Virginia, and on the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Music as Assistant Director of Orchestral Studies. He has also been invited to conduct numerous honor ensembles, including the Pennsylvania, North Dakota, and Maine All-State Orchestras. From 2015–2018, John served as the Cover Conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC. Of his debut concert with the NSO and soloist Joshua Bell, Anne Midgette of the Washington Post wrote that Devlin “led the evening with flair...and was visibly in his element.” During those same years, John was the Assistant Conductor of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, and the Artistic Director and Conductor of Gourmet Symphony.Devlin has also contributed to his local musical community in a variety of ways. He volunteers annually as a grant panelist for the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Nationally, he has served on the Board of Directors for the Conductors Guild and is an active member of the College Orchestra Directors Association and the League of American Orchestras. He has also been the featured speaker at a TEDx Symposium, where he delivered the keynote TED talk on “Innovation in Crowded Marketplaces.” The talk, available on YouTube, details the thinking that led to Gourmet Symphony and provides methodologies that might serve as a model for other innovators. Devlin’s completed his master’s and doctoral degrees during seven years of work with master-teacher James Ross at the University of Maryland School of Music. His undergraduate degree is from Emory University where he graduated summa cum laude with a double major in Music and Latin. His early professional career has been shaped by his time as an assistant for Gianandrea Noseda, Christoph Eschenbach, Rossen Milanov, and Victoria Gau.

Guest Artist Raiatea Helm

aiatea Mokihana Maile Helm set the Hawaiian music community on fire when she was just 18-yearsold, with the release of her debut album Far Away Heaven in 2002. Raiatea’s melodic voice made her a natural performer of leo ki‘eki‘e (Hawaiian falsetto), and earned her the reputation of being the successor to Hawaiian music legend, Aunty Genoa Keawe. Her debut album continued to propel her career into stardom as she received two prestigious Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and Most Promising Artist. The release of Raiatea’s second album, Sweet and Lovely, more than confirmed her early promise and earned her four additional Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards in 2006. The success of Sweet and Lovely further garnered her national fame as she became Hawaii’s first-ever solo female vocalist to be nominated for a Grammy©. The album was recognized in the top 10 of “The 25 Greatest Hawaii Albums of the New Century” and Raiatea would later receive her second Grammy nomination in 2008. In 2011, she became the first Hawaiian recipient of a prestigious Native Arts & Cultures Fellowship and was most recently named Female Vocalist of the Year in 2017 by her peers upon being awarded her eighth Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award. Raiatea is now recognized as one of Hawaii’s premier female vocalists and a keeper of the Hawaiian falsetto tradition of the early to mid-20th century. She has captivated the attention of audiences throughout the Hawaiian Islands and around the world, interpreting traditional Hawaiian song with the mastery and control of a jazz vocalist. 4 | February 18, 2019 e Youth Symphony I

About Youth Symphony I

Youth Symphony I (YSI) is the most advanced of HYS’s seven orchestras, and is one of the finest youth symphonies in the country. In its history, YSI has performed with renowned guest artists, was a Finalist in the Na Hoku Hanohano awards, and had the special honor of performing on From The Top, a nationally-broadcast radio show. For the 2018–2019 season, Youth Symphony I is composed of 110 students, grades 9–12, from 22 public, home, and independent schools across Oahu and Maui. They will rehearse more than 130 hours and perform 10 concerts on Oahu and Maui. A recent collaboration with the professional Hawaii Symphony Orchestra put Youth Symphony I side-by-side with many of their teachers and role models.

Program Notes by Ruth Komatsu

Fanfare for the Common Man Aaron Copland (1900–1990) was an American composer, composition teacher and conductor, whose music is considered by many to be the “sound of American music.” He was the son of immigrant shop owners and was born in Brooklyn, NY. His most famous works are ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo. During World War II, the conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Eugene Goossens, commissioned several American composers to write fanfares that were to open each of the Symphonyʻs concerts during that 1942-43 season. These fanfares were to honor the men who were fighting mightily in the U.S.’s war effort. Out of the 10 fanfares that were composed for the CSO, Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man is the only one that is regularly performed today. The title paints every common person as a hero. The fanfare is scored for brass and percussion instruments. Copland later used this fanfare as the main theme in his Third Symphony’s finale. Listen for: • bass drum and tam-tam (gong) • decrescendo (decrease in volume) • heralding brass instruments: trumpets, horns, trombones and tuba • echoes by the timpani (kettle drums) • ”punctuation” by bass drum and tam-tam

Kealaikahiki Suite III. “Raise Hawaiki” Kealaikahiki is the “way to Tahiti.” Kealaikahiki Suite is an orchestral work by MichaelThomas Foumai (b. 1987) that explores the 1976 maiden voyage of Polynesian canoe Hōkūleʻa to Tahiti. The musical material and themes are borrowed from the composer's larger choral-orchestral work Raise Hawaiki. When Hōkūle‘a arrived at the beach in Pape‘ete Harbor, over half the island’s people were there, more than 17,000 strong, and there was a spontaneous affirmation of what a great heritage they shared and also a renewal of the spirit of whom they were today. Hawaiki is the name of the mythical homeland of the Polynesian people. This third and final movement “Raise Hawaiki” is a slightly expanded version from the fifth movement of Foumai’s larger choral-orchestral version. Among the multiple meanings of Hawaiki Rising include the dream of the legendary Hawaiian waterman, Eddie Aikau, of seeing Tahiti rise from the sea, just as his ancestors once did long ago. Foumai is an award-winning composer of contemporary concert music and is currently on the University of Hawai‘i Music Department’s faculty in the area of Theory and Composition. Listen for: • propulsive rhythms and soaring melodies

• the excitement of seeing land rising from the sea

Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) is one of the most recognized of and influential of all composers. He is best known for his nine symphonies and many works for piano and string quartets. Young Beethoven was a protégé who came from a musical family. His father pushed him to be a child performer like Mozart. He began composing at the age of 9 and continued even after becoming completely deaf later in life. Beethoven’s music bridges the Classical and Romantic eras when orchestras became larger, musical forms and harmonic structures became less rigid, instrumentation became more colorful and musical ideas became more expressive. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is one of the best-known compositions of all time. Its opening notes are instantly recognizable by many. It premiered in 1808 and remains as one of the most played symphony in concert halls today. Listen for: • the 1st movement’s famous, serious first four notes • changes in dynamics (volume/loudness) • changes in mood • the four-note motif throughout the movement • the 4th movement’s grand opening • three additional themes • crescendo (increase in volume) • a lengthy coda (ending section) Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 47 IV. Finale – Allegro non troppo Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) was a Russian pianist and composer of the Soviet period, and one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century. Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union, but later had a difficult relationship with the Stalinist totalitarian bureaucracy. His music, considered to stir fear and terror under Stalin, was officially denounced twice, in 1936 and 1948, and even banned. But despite such action by the government, Shostakovich continued to express himself and compose. After his fourth symphony was completed, but not premiered, Shostakovich worked on his fifth symphony with a different mindset. Premiered in 1937, the symphony appeared to be more uplifting and triumphant, which the government accepted. Craftily, in the symphony’s final movement, Shostakovich conveyed feelings of forced jubilation and celebration that is felt when one is oppressed. The performance was met with tears of emotion and cheers of triumph. Listen for: • a violent march-like theme • accelerando (acceleration) • fragments of the march • repetition of a single note (representing forced rejoicing) • a grand ending, punctuated by the timpani

Know a Young Musician?

HYS offers scholarships and travel assistance to neighbor island students! Auditions are held in May for the next school year. Or come to O‘ahu for the Pacific Music Institute, to be held in July!

For more information: HiYouthSymphony.org

HYS: Our Passion for Our Work Music is an extraordinary discipline with the incredible power to challenge the mind, nurture the soul and open doorways to a whole new world of opportunities. Although music education supports all learning, not all children have the resources to obtain instruments, receive lessons or have access to inspiring mentors to further develop their interests. Despite music programs being the first to be cut from school budgets, research has consistently demonstrated that music education positively impacts children; their learning in other subjects, and enhances skills that will inevitably be used throughout their life. Established as a non-profit organization in 1964, Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) inspires hundreds of young musicians across the Hawaiian Islands to pursue their goals and continues to share the universal joy of music with nearly 20,000 concertgoers statewide. More than 700 students ages 7–18 currently participate in HYS music-making programs spanning general music, string & band classes, symphony orchestras, summer intensives, and neighbor island initiatives. As the universal language of the heart, music is a form of human connection that has the ability to create lasting bonds between people of all ages, all cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. HYS is dedicated to making the gift of music accessible to all young people so they may experience the timeless value of learning a new skill and embracing a lifelong appreciation of the arts. Music is a right, not a privilege, and HYS is committed to continuing to empower children everywhere with the joy, skills and character building that come from learning music for generations to come.
